AIR has been cooled, heated, washed; humidified and dehumidified for many purposes and in many industries. At a number of metal mines air is conditioned to reduce the high humidity and unbearable heat found in deep workings, and at some mines air is washed to allay siliceous dust. Steam is introduced into the intake air at many coal mines, particularly in winter, for the purpose of keeping loose coal dust so moistened that the hazard of an explosion is lessened. This paper will describe a further successful application of air conditioning in a coal mine, where, for over three years, all intake air has been cooled to a constant temperature for the sole purpose of preventing roof falls.

The tide of increasing demand for metals turned during early 1949, with resultant lower prices. The production of the principal metals was less than in 1948. The problem of high unit costs, however, was held over from 1948. With the lower prices for metals, greater efforts are being made to reduce operating costs. The labor supply was adequate during the latter half of the year in most districts. The force has been reduced at most mines; some mines were idle during part of the year because of strikes, and others ceased operations on their own account. In the main, labor efficiency increased during the year in underground metal mines. Efforts are being made generally to improve labor relations. Green men hired in the time of the scarcity of skilled miners are becoming better trained. The supervisory personnel of most mines is cost conscious, and the planning of operations has been improved. Overhead costs are being scrutinized. The trend toward mechanization underground continued strong. Mining technology rapidly is becoming a problem of handling materials. Surface miners, underground miners and miners of metals, nonmetallics, and coal can learn much Gardner from each other. A mine, however, may become overmechanized. The capital charges against new equipment may exceed the saving in labor costs where sufficient daily tonnage is not handled.

EL Salvador mine of Andes Copper Mining Co., E subsidiary of Anaconda Co., is in northern Chile about 18 miles north of Potrerillos, 7825 ft above sea level. Initial production is planned for the first half of 1959. Plant capacity will be 30,000 tpd, and there are 308,835,000 tons of proven ore reserves, averaging 1.49 pct Cu. The Inca adit is being driven as part of the mine-to-mill haulageway. Because of the overburden it is planned to mine the deposit by block caving. Ore will be dropped from upper gathering levels through ore passes to the Inca adit, through which it will be transported out of the mine to the primary crushing plant located a half mile from the portal.

THIS chapter and Chapter 19 deal with the heat quantities involved in open-hearth steelmaking, including the thermal efficiency of the furnace as a generator of high-temperature heat, the heat storage in the steel and slag produced and in the furnace walls, and the heats of the various chemical reactions involved in combustion, in the formation of slag, and the refining of steel. The fundamental laws to be considered are the first two laws of thermodynamics as applied to problems involving sensible and potential (or latent) heat only: 1. Heat input equals heat outflow plus storage. 2. Heat may be transferred only from a hotter body to a colder one. The first of these laws relates to the various heat quantities or the heat balance of the process. No one has as yet made an open-hearth heat balance that came out almost exactly balanced. The cause probably lies in the difficulties of accurate temperature and flow-rate measurements at the high temperatures involved and the inherent complexities in flow distribution and air leakage present in any real open-hearth furnace system. Some idea of the magnitude of the heat quantities involved can be obtained by a brief, crude outline of the heat balance of a 90-ton heat of steel. We will assume a 60 to 70 per cent hot- metal charge in a fairly fast working and only moderately efficient furnace, burning fuel oil, with a fuel consumption of around 4 million Btu per net ton of ingots produced. The time from start of charge to tap is 9 hr. During this period, the oil burned represents 360 million Btu and the sensible heat in the preheated air at the port ends is 117 million Btu, so that the total heat input at the ports is 477 million Btu. Heat stored in the steel and slag at the end of the heat, plus the various amounts absorbed by certain bath reactions, amounts to a total of 195 million Btu, but 120 million of this is supplied by the heat in the hot metal and by various heat-evolving reactions in the bath,

The diffusion of metal atoms into the crystal lattice of another metal and the assumption of regular positions to form a homogeneous alloy are some of the most fundamental phenomena of structural metallurgy. The mechanism of this process has been the subject of a great deal of study from many viewpoints, but the picture is still far from complete. It is generally believed that if one metal is to diffuse into another, the first must have some solubility in the second1. This means that the solvent must be able to accommodate the stranger atoms, either on points of its own lattice or in the interstices between, without losing its own crystal-lographic identity. It is also a general observation that cold-working is a distinct aid in the diffusion process, causing it to take place with greater rapidity at the same temperature or with the same speed at a lower temperature. There is considerable doubt, however, as to the real significance of the deformation in its effect on the diffusion mechanism. Several factors associated with the cold-working may be responsible for the increased diffusion rate. The plastic deformation causes a distortion of the solvent lattice, which may be an aid in the assimulation of atoms of another kind. There are many references2 in the literature that suggest that some distortion or "loosening" of the lattice is necessary for atomic migration and that diffusion cannot take place in the undis-torted lattice. On the other hand, it may be that the cold-working causes an increase in surface of contact between the two metals through fragmentation or provides a more intimate contact that is necessary for diffusion. ADEQUATE treatment of the difficulties surrounding the valuation of mineral lands requires that agreement be first reached defining value as understood for the purpose of appraisal. To define value as the price of a product is not sufficient, and does not assist us in using the factors that cause variations in values and in relative values. The real value of any product depends primarily upon its relation to the necessities, comforts and pleasures of mankind. As the necessities, comforts and pleasures of the civilized races differ-from those of more primitive man, the value of products varies with the degree of civilization and the environment of the consumer. Coal has no value to the savages of warm climates, and arrow-head flint none to the residents of New York. It has long been recognized that what has. been termed ?intrinsic value " must be limited to materials that are essential to existence-air, water, food. But " intrinsic value " cannot be measured in monetary terms. The intrinsic value of a bushel of wheat is due to the fact that it will support the life of an individual for a certain definite time, but this fact does not enable us to measure or to express that value in monetary terms. It has often been proposed to adopt as a measure of the value of any product the quantity of labor necessary to produce it, but this method is of limited application, and will not apply to what may be termed " intrinsic values." For many reasons it might be well, while assenting to the fact that any material may be intrinsically valuable, to abandon the use of the term "intrinsic value." One of these reasons is the tendency to confuse the idea of " intrinsic value with a value that is conferred by economic conditions, that is purely artificial and that may be permanent or evanescent. Intrinsic value must from its nature be permanent and unchangeable.

FOREWORD This paper by Mr. Thorneycroft, Past President of the Institution of Mining Engineers (Great Britain), and chairman of its Subsidence Committee, is a valuable contribution to the assemblage of data on ground movement and subsidence from coal mining. It deals with the effects of advancing longwall, a method almost universal in Europe but as vet little used in the United States outside of Northern Illinois and in a few scattered places elsewhere, in thin coal beds, as in the Lexington field, Missouri, Canon City field, Colorado, and the Birmingham field, Alabama. Although by advancing- longwall, a maximum recovery of coal is obtained and it has to be employed where there are weak shale roofs, especially in deep mines, it is a more expensive method of operation unless the mining conditions are favorable, which is unusual in the United States. On the other hand, there is a growing use in this country of what is essentially retreating long wall, with an approximately straight break-line as described by Rayburn.1 With this method, in which the pillars are substantial, it was shown that the ground movement effect is practically identical with that of advancing longwall, hence the value to mining engineers of the precise data given by Mr. Thorneycroft. His study is unusual in several respects; it deals with conditions connected with ,the mining of a coal bed 20 in. thick, about 490 ft. below the surface, over a mined-out area in a 5-ft. bed about 90 ft. below, which had been mined about 12 years earlier. Both mines passed under Plean House, a building of massive cut stone construction built over a century ago, in which Mr: Thorneycroft resided throughout the under-mining period. Slight cracks opened in the walls as the longwall face approached the house in mining the upper seam, and closed after the face passed and subsidence took place. In the northwest wall, the last wall the face passed under, some stone blocks were broken, which was attributed to a strike period when the advance of face came nearly to a standstill. Other than this there was no perceptible permanent damage, as indicated by the photographs taken by the undersigned in 1923 (Figs. 1 and 2). Mr. Thorneycroft used a novel means of studying the successive positions of the corners of the building: he hung plumb bobs from the eaves and traced the paths of the respective plumb bob points on level surfaces. The angles made by the house walls with the plumb bob lines gave measures of the slope of the subsidence wave at the respective points. A slight upward wave was indicated by the surveys ahead of the subsidence, which would appear to be due to a tilting over of the massive sandstone stratum in the roof measures near the surface, the edge of the subsidence area acting as the fulcrum.

INVAR is the preeminent low-expansion metal by virtue of the fact that it can be prepared with a zero coefficient of expansion at atmospheric temperature. This fact suggests that there is little room for improvement in the expansion properties of the low-expansion nickel steels. The inference is true, however, only so far as the expansion at and near atmospheric temperature is concerned, because the expansivity of invar starts to increase rapidly on heating above 100° C. and soon reaches the value of copper. Guillaume1 met this situation by increasing the nickel content above that of invar. By that expedient, alloys having low expansivity under higher temperatures were obtained, but not without a large increase in minimum expansivity. The increase in minimum expansivity with increasing nickel content severely limits the technical applications of these alloys at high temperatures. Prospects of improving the expansion characteristics of the nickel steels is offered by alloying. Search for an advantageous alloying addition by analogy with other alloy systems, however, is not productive because the low-expansion characteristic is unique with that system. The rule of mixtures usually gives a fair value of the expansivity of other solid-solution alloys, but in the iron-nickel systems gives a value of 18 X 10-6 per deg. C. whereas the actual value is 1 X 10-6 per deg. C. Apparently suitable additions are not to be deduced from such ingenuous considerations. Recognition of the fact that the temperature range of low expansivity in nickel steels is terminated with loss of magnetism affords a more promising basis for the selection of an advantageous element. One may expect from that fact that additions of nonmagnetic elements to the iron-nickel alloys are detrimental to the low-expansion characteristic. Indeed, carbon, manganese, silicon, copper and chromium are detri-mental to the expansion properties and no nonmagnetic element is reported to be beneficial. From the same viewpoint, the addition of a magnetic metal offers prospects of improvement. As two of the three ferromagnetic elements are already present in the

GRAVITY concentration is a general term designating processes for separating and sorting granular material by means of forces that depend on the density, size and shape of the particles. When these forces are applied to the particles the latter are caused to move, those of a given density along one path and those of a different density along another, until ultimately they are sufficiently separated to be removed from the operation of the process. The forces producing this separation are in general complex and, unfortunately, no completely rigorous analysis of them has as yet been devised. The science of the hydrodynamics of viscous fluids deals with the little that is known about the problem. Every observer of nature is familiar with the fact that an object moving in a fluid encounters a force of resistance. We have only to walk against a brisk wind or stir a cup of coffee, or observe the slow fall of a grain of sand in water, to experience directly the fact that such forces exist. The exchange of force between an object and a fluid in which it is moving operates on the fluid as well as on the object. Thus a sailboat may be set in motion by the force exerted by the wind on the sail; but the sail also deflects the wind-furthermore, the water in which the boat floats is set in motion by the force exerted by the boat as it cleaves through the water. The wind is thus enabled to do work on the water through the intermediary of the boat. In general, an object moving through a fluid encounters a force that opposes the motion and also acts to change the motion of the fluid. In gravity concentration we are dealing with this force of resistance acting - on the granular particles that are to be separated. Furthermore, the motion induced in the fluid by a particle will in turn affect the motion of a neighboring particle. This effect will be reciprocated and in consequence there will be an exchange of forces between all the particles in the material. These effects are complex and the most that can be expected is that we may be able to determine in a qualitative way how they operate. In gravity concentration, then, the following types of forces may be distinguished as acting on the particles: 1. The force of gravity, which acts on every particle in the system in proportion to its mass. 2. Buoyant forces, which arise from the force of gravity acting on the fluid.

Annealed, .Poly crystalline, low carbon steel exhibits a phenomenon known as the "yield point." If such a steel is loaded in tension, the load increases steadily with elastic strain, drops suddenly, fluctuates about some constant load value for a time and then rises with further strain. The load at which the sudden drop occurs is called the "upper yield point"; the load at which deformation proceeds at constant load is known as the "lower yield point"; the amount of elongation at constant load is termed the "yield point elongation." Deformation which occurs during the yield point elongation is heterogeneous in nature, deformed metal existing next to undeformed metal. The drop in load from the upper yield point is concurrent with the formation of a band of deformed metal which usually appears at a stress concentration such as a fillet and at an angle of approximately 45" with the direction of pull. As deformation proceeds during the yield point elongation, the deformed region grows until the entire specimen has been strained an amount equal to the strain in the first band. A phenomenon very often associated with the yield point is that of strain aging. Aging in steels may be of two types: quench aging, or precipitation hardening, and strain-aging. Strain aging differs from precipitation hardening in that if the metal is merely strained instead of given a solution anneal and quenched, it then undergoes changes in properties similar to those observed in quench aging. The yield point effect and strain aging are most markedly exhibited by low carbon steel, but have been observed in other alloys. Numerous explanations for the mechanisms of both phenomena have been advanced, but the evidence for the acceptance of any of the hypotheses is incomplete. One of the explanations of the yield point phenomenon frequently proposed is that there exists a honeycomb of grain boundary material that supports the load above the yield strength of the ferrite and that when this network ruptures, the ferrite flows with no increase in load. This notion was first advanced by Dalbyl in 1913 and has been since put forward in more concrete form by many investigators. The testing of this hypothesis was, in part, the object of the present investigation. Similarly, the mechanism by which strain aging occurs remains to be explained. Presumably, it is a precipitation hardening phenomenon similar to quench aging, the precipitation being initiated by strain. However, it is not known whether the process is a solution and precipitation effect or a change in solubility due to strain. One obvious method of determining whether or not the yield point is a grain boundary phenomenon is to determine if single crystals exhibit a yield point. Low and Gensamer2 have shown that carbon and nitrogen are responsible for the yield point and aging in steel and that these effects can be eliminated by the removal of these elements through wet hydrogen purification. Single crystals that have been grown in wet hydrogen treated material must then be recarburized or re-nitrided in order to evaluate the effect of grain boundaries. In the present investigation, single crystals of iron which had been annealed in wet hydrogen to remove the carbon and nitrogen were cut into two specimens having the same orientation with respect to the tension axis. Of these, one specimen was pulled in tension in the wet hydrogen treated state and the other was carburized or nitrided and tested similarly. All the crystals were examined for a yield-point and strain aging. The grain boundary hypothesis for the explanation of the yield point in steel has been tested only indirectly previously. Arrowsmith,3 Andrew and Lee,4 Edwards and Pfeil,5 Fell,6 Ludwik and Scheu,7 Winlock and Leiter8 and others found a decrease in proportional limit and yield point effect with an in-

Gravity surveying with the torsion balance or the pendulum for ore prospecting purposes has generally not been considered practical or even possible. It is the intention of this paper to show that a fast and sensitive gravimeter can be very useful in ore prospecting, as an auxiliary to the electrical and magnetic instruments. A number of gravimeters have been constructed and put in practical use in the last seven or eight years; for instance, by Ising, Lejay-Holweck, Haalck, Hartley, Thyssen, Noergaard, the Humble Oil and Refining Co. and the Gulf Production Co. Their main application, apart from their use for geodetic surveys, has been for structure mapping in oil prospecting. There is no record that any of them have been used for ore prospecting. About the middle of 1934 the Boliden Mining Co., in Sweden, began experiments in constructing a static gravity meter sensitive enough for ore prospecting. Calculations and considerations that will be discussed later in this paper showed that this would necessitate an accuracy in the measurements of 0.1 milligal—roughly, one ten-millionth part of the total force of gravity. The first successful practical field tests of the instrument were made in January 1936. About the middle of 1937 the Boliden gravimeter was perfected. Ore prospecting with this instrument is now regular practice in Sweden, especially for the testing of indications given by geoelectric and magnetic methods. In the process of making steel in the open-hearth furnace the refining of the metal during the working period of the heat is largely accomplished through the agency of the slag. From the birth of the process until the present day steelmakers have recognized the importance of the slag in determining the composition of the metal and the quality of the product. The general relationships between slag composition and metal analysis have long been known, at least in a qualitative or approximate fashion. For examples, the iron oxide content of the slag is higher on lower carbon heats; the more basic slags are higher in iron oxide for a given carbon content; certain amounts of iron oxide and lime arc required for phosphorus removal and a high lime-silica ratio is needed if the sulphur content of the metal is to be diminished. In recent years a number of quantitative relationships involving these and other variables have been developed through plant and laboratory studies by numerous investigators in this country and abroad. The direct comparison of laboratory and open-hearth data involves the question of the degree to which each approaches the conditions of chemical equilibrium, a question which, from the open-hearth standpoint, we are scarcely yet in position to answer. And, although a considerable body of dependable equilibrium data has been obtained in the laboratory, this work has not yet been extended to cover the ranges of slag composition encountered in basic open-hearth practice. In the present study we shall not attempt to draw comparisons between data from the two sources; nor do we attempt to draw conclusions as to the approach to chemical equilibrium in the open-hearth furnace. Many of the operating variables that are likely to be erratic or unrecorded during the earlier stages of the heat become more consistent and arc more readily subject to observation and control during later stages. For example, undigested lime or ore gradually goes into solution, the rate of carbon drop levels off, and the temperature of the metal is brought under control. For these and other reasons a greater degree of self-consistency is likely to be found among data obtained during the

POWDER metallurgical methods as applied to zirconium are of great interest because they permit not only the fabrication of parts directly to shape with a minimum loss of material but also the utilization of scrap, and the metal may be processed at temperatures well below the melting point. There are two difficulties involved in the melting of zirconium: 1—High vacuum is necessary for melting, and 2—zirconium reduces nearly all oxides so that it is difficult to find a suitable crucible material. The purest material, zirconium crystal bar, is expensive, and the methods of subsequent fabrication are limited. Cold rolling or extrusion of zirconium crystal bar is suitable for making certain shaped parts, but where melting is involved, the purity of the metal is invariably decreased, and a method of casting to a definite shape does not seem to be feasible. Where it is necessary to hot roll, zirconium must be covered with a steel or copper jacket to protect it from the air. This is necessarily a costly operation. Where annealing of zirconium is necessary it must be conducted in a high vacuum. In an investigation of powder metallurgical methods for zirconium, the zirconium powder used should be characterized by the following properties: 1— Highest degree of purity, 2—uniformity in particle shape and particle size distribution, 3—low compression ratio, and 4—satisfactory strength of the compacted powder (green strength). Zirconium powders have been made by two methods: By the reduction of zirconium tetrachloride (ZrC1,) with sodium,2' *•B "nd by the reduction of zirconium oxide with calcium and calcium chloride." The first method represents one of the earliest attempts to make pure zirconium metal, and the sintered product from this powder is extremely brittle. The second method of making zirconium powder is far more successful, but the powder made in this way has an extremely low apparent density and, therefore, a high compression ratio which makes it difficult to use it for powder metallurgical purposes. For these reasons the above-mentioned zirconium powders were not used in this investigation. To obtain sintered zirconium compacts of highest 'purity and good ductility, it was first necessary to produce a suitable powder. Pure zirconium has been made chiefly by two methods. The iodide method, from which the product is "crystal bar" zirconium, was developed first.'." By this purification process very soft, pure, and ductile zirconium metal can be produced. The second method, developed by the U. S. Bureau of Mines, is the reduction of zirconium chloride with magnesium." The sponge zirconium thus produced is also soft, pure, and ductile.

The stored energy of cold work was investigated in drawn gold-silver wires by tin-solution calorimetry as a function of strain, strain rate, initial grain size, and temperature of defornation. The energy expended in the deformation process was measured. Hardness was also measured and was correlated with the stored energy as a function of strain and strain rate. Mechanisms of energy storage are discussed. THE variables which determine the amount of energy stored in a metal during cold work are of two kinds: those involving the metal and its condition and those involving the process of deformation. For example, the stored energy differs between one metal and another and between different degrees of purity of a single metal. It also depends on the nature of the deformation process and particularly the extent, rate, and temperature of deformation. Most investigators have reported the stored energy as a function of strain (or some similar geometric parameter) or of the energy expended during deformation. In general the stored energy increases with strain, rapidly at first, but more slowly at large strains until a saturation level is reached. Application of the concepts of nu-cleation and growth to the analysis of experimental transformation data has led to valuable descriptions of phase transformations, an outstanding example being the transformation austenite —* pearlite which has been examined with particular care by Mehl and co-workers.&apos;-5 In addition to the pearlite transformation, the proeutectoid fer-rite and proeutectoid carbide transformations are known to proceed by nucleation and growth. Martensite, on the contrary, until recently was thought to form by a mechanism involving neither nucleation nor growth; however, extension of standard nucleation theory6 suggests that martensite, bain-ite, and the other products of austenite decomposition all grow from nuclei in the parent phase. The theory that martensite forms by nucleation and growth is strongly supported by recent experimental work of Kurdjumov and Maksimova.7 The concepts of nucleatioli and growth have been fruitful also in providing a sound basis for quantitative theoretical treatments of the kinetics of phase transformations. For example, Volmer and Weber8 and Becker and Döring9 developed the theory of nucleation from fundamental considerations to a point where excellent agreement was obtained with the results of experiments on the condensation of supercooled vapors. As a result of their analysis, the kinetics of vapor-liquid transformations now can be predicted. It seems probable that application of the theories of nucleation and growth to a quantitative study of austenite decomposition similarly will clarify the nature of the individual transfor: mations involved, and will enable the calculation of austenite transformation kinetics. In the present paper, the theories of nucleation and growth are applied to the austenite ? martensite transformation in steels. The analysis begins with a discussion of nucleation in single component systems. Martensite appears to be coherent with the parent austenite, hence the nucleation theory is modified to include the effects of elastic distortion. Nucleation in the two component iron-carbon system then is discussed, for most steels are primarily alloys of these two elements. Finally, M. temperatures and martensite transformation curves are calculated for each of several alloy steels of varying carbon and chromium content, and are compared with those determined experimentally by Lyman and Troiano10 and Harris and Cohen.11 Nucleation Theory NUCLEATION IN SINGLE COMPONENT SYSTEMS6,12-14 The work required for reversible formation of a region of phase within the parent a phase is expressed conveniently as the sum of two terms: W1 = Aa, the product of the area of the interface and the interfacial free energy, and W2 = VAf, the product of the volume of the region and the free energy increase per unit volume associated with the transformation. The total work is therefore W = Aa + VAf. When a is more stable than ß, Af is positive and W increases without limit as the volume increases. The transformation a ?ß does not occur. It is nevertheless true that small regions of phase ß enjoy temporary existence here and there in the a. The equilibrium number of ß regions of given size is proportional to exp(— W/kT) per unit volume of a, assuring that larger (ß regions occur with diminishing probability. When a is less stable than ß, Af is negative and W passes through a maximum as V increases. Assuming for simplicity that regions of ß are spherical, as is true when the interfacial tension is isotropic and there are no elastic strains, W = 4r2a + (4/3)*r3Af The maximum value of W is W* = 16iro3/3Af2 [1] for regions with radius r* = -2o/Af. [2] For single component condensed systems it has been shown14 that the steady rate of nucleation of 0 per unit volume of untransformed a is nearly proportional to exp[- (W* + Q)/kT] where Q is the activation energy for the unit processes of adding or removing one atom from an embryo or nucleus. If To is the temperature at which a and ß are in equilibrium, the rate of nucleation is a maximum at a temperature 0 < T < To where (W* + Q)/kT is a minimum. P regions smaller than critical size are called embryos; they tend to grow smaller and disappear, only exceptionally growing larger. Regions equal to or larger than critical size are called nuclei. A critical size nucleus may grow indefinitely large or may shrink back to a, either process decreasing the free energy of the region.

The main reasons leading to the development of pelletizing in these countries, alternative pelletizing methods and feed materials utilised, are illustrated with typical examples. The major factors which may influence the future growth are discussed and trends of development in the immediate future, till 1978, examined. The probable pelletizing capacity by 1985 is projected.

The object of the following is to discuss a few of the problems encountered in the practical field application of reflection seismology. Very little has been published on this phase of the work and it is to be hoped that discussions will be presented by many seismologists who have met with these problems in the field. No attempt will be made to discuss the general principles of reflection prospecting, nor to outline the general field procedure. These phases have been presented more or less in detail in previous publications1 while economy of space and time prevents their being repeated or amended here. If, in the following pages, some criticism is offered of those who have already given their time and efforts to present valuable papers on reflection shooting, we trust that it will be accepted in the constructive light under which it is offered. We do not wish to give the impression that the following paragraphs represent ultimate achievement in field procedure; they are presented more to illustrate methods we have found satisfactory thus far. We believe that the following three subjects are inexorably linked with the continued future successes and more widespread use of the reflection method which, at the present time, is the most
