Reissner's thick plate bending theory has been recast for rocks which exhibit the property of double elasticity: different Young's modulus and Poisson's ratio in compression and tension. The governing differential equation and other relevent expressions have been presented in a form compatible to the applied mechanics results so that they can readily be used. Effect of the ratio of Young's modulii in compression and tension, (Ec/Et), on the maximum plate deflection and the maximum bending moments has been evaluated over a wide range. It has been found that the inclusion of bi-modulus property through a parameter (ß = Ec/Et), changes the sheer deformation of the plate to such an extent that the bi-modular effect of rock cannot be overlooked in the thick plate analysis, especially when ß is expected to be greater than 2.

FEW mining engineers-noted as the profession is for migratory predilections.--can point to as varied a record as Scott Turner, director of the U. S. Bureau of Mines and newly elected vice-president of the Institute. His record as printed shows that from the time of his graduation from the Michigan College of Mines in 1904 until he went to the Bureau in 1925, he worked for 21 different companies. Geographically the record is no less imposing, although one reason for this is the fact that he was field engineer for several exploration companies. Virtually every important mining state in the Union is represented in addition to Canada, Alaska, Panama, and several countries each in South America and Europe. In addition to all of the common metals he has mined tin and coal. He opened and operated for five years a group of coal mines in 73" 13' S. Lat., on the Island of Spitzbergen. This was 825 miles north of the Arctic Circle on No Man's Land, where Mr. Turner claimed and maintained pos- session under the American flag of an area of 600 square miles. Incidentally, he was a survivor of the ill-fated Lusitania, sunk by a submarine in May, 1915.

THIS paper is a general discussion of developments in our reverberatory smelting practice during the past five years. It deals briefly kith changes in furnace types ; changes in furnace feed ; de- crease in the amount of slag produced; relation of slag assays to copper loss in the slag; increase in the grade of matte and furnace capacities. The reverberatory is but one unit in the copper plant ancl 'any discussion of it must be considered with reference to the other units and to the plant as a whole. A change in the grade of concentrates at the concentrator puts an entirely new aspect on reverberatory smelting and, likewise, a change in the grade of matte at the reverberatory affects the rate and cost of converting. The introduction of differential flotation in 1927 had a very marked influence on all smelting operations and its effect will be noted

DEFINITE improvement in its accident fatality rate in the coal-mining industry was recorded during 1941, based on preliminary figures for the period from January through October. Total production during this ten-month period was approximately 91 percent of the total production in all of 1940. The ten-month accident rate for both bituminous and anthracite mining in 1941 was 2.15 killed per million tons of coal mined, compared with a rate of 2.66 for the full year of 1940. The bituminous rate decreased from 2.55 in 1940 to 1.99 in ten months of 1941, and the anthracite rate from 3.62 to 3.53 in similar periods. The decrease is more apparent for the bituminous branch of the industry, as the high figure in 1940 was due to seven major disasters which brought death to 276 men. The same number of major explosions during ten months of 1941 caused only 64 lives to be lost. The severity of the explosions has been lower this year but a definite need still exists for reduction in this type of accident.

SCRAP metals to the value of more than a billion and a half dollars were recovered in the United States in 1939 for further use in industry. Few people have any true conception of the magnitude of the secondary-metal industry as related to that engaged in the production of the primary, or virgin, metals; of its importance, particularly when a shortage of primary metals exists, as at present; or of the advance that has been made in standardizing and improving the quality of its products. Of the iron and steel produced in the United States in 1939 (the data used in this article are largely taken from Bureau of Mines reports for that year) just over 50 per cent came from scrap and slightly less than 50 per cent from ore. Of the principal nonferrous metals-aluminum, anti-mony, copper, lead, nickel, tin, and zinc-63 per cent came from domestic ores and 37 per cent from scrap. Fig. 1 presents graphically the relative tonnage and value of primary and secondary production of ferrous and nonferrous metals. In this chart only purchased secondary metals are considered, the figures being exclusive of "home" or "plant" scrap which amounts to rather large figures in the iron and steel industry. Incidentally, the chart shows that from the tonnage standpoint the iron and steel industry is some twenty times larger than the nonferrous industry, though with regard to the value of the product the ratio drops to about two to one.

EXPERIMENTAL work conducted at the Petroleum Engineering Laboratory of the University of California by L. C. Uren, J. Domercq, Jr., and J. Mejia has shown that small diameter wells offer tremendous resistance to the flow of fluids in their immediate vicinity. This resistance is due in part to the constriction of the area through which the fluids must pass as they approach the wall of the well, but is also accentuated by the increased volume which results from gas expansion. The latter in turn is a function of the deduction in pressure, the fundamental cause of fluid movement. If the diameter of the bore is enlarged several diameters, the capacity of the well, or the volume of fluid passing per unit drop in pressure per unit of time, is greatly increased without necessitating such high fluid velocities. The fundamental features which should be taken into consideration in the design of casing joints were stressed by J. B. Graham and E. E. Smith. These involved such points as correct thread design, high efficiency, and small diameter, together with the insurance that leakage will absolutely be prevented. The practical features of such design were ably discussed by engineers from leading steel manufacturers.

THE third annual Joint Western Mining Convention, held at Los Angeles, Sept. 10 to 13 inclusive, was a notable success both as to attendance and interest. Registration the first day amounted to 201, and the total crept up to 347 before the close. The American Institute of Mining Engineers was well represented, approximately 80% of those registered and most of the speakers being members. This illustrates largely the amount of interlocking membership and the reason for holding at one time and place meetings of the several related organizations. The plan has proved so successful that it is probable that Spokane will extend an invitation for next year that seems likely to be accepted. It is proposed that the convention be timed so as to permit visitors from the East to stop there Oct. 3 to 5, en route to the American Institute of Mining Engineers meeting at San Francisco, Oct. 7 to 9. Simultaneously, it is expected that the Petroleum Division will hold its fall session at Los Angeles, the two streams of travel meeting in San Francisco, just before departure of the party of engineers traveling to Japan to attend the World's Engineering Congress. The Los Angeles meeting opened Monday morning with a general session under the auspices of the Western Division of the American Mining Congress with Philip Wiseman in the chair. After a series of short responses to the welcome extended, Charles W. Merrill discussed the needs of the western mining industry. A complimentary luncheon to members and delegates followed.

THE 139th meeting of the Institute will be held Feb. 17-20, in the Engineering Societies Building, New York. The annual business meeting will be held on Feb. 18 at 10 a. m., and no technical sessions will be scheduled at that time, so that all members may participate in the election of officers, hear the presentation of the annual reports of officers and committees and discuss any matter which they may care to bring up at that time. The annual dinner will be held at the Conlmodore Hotel on the evening of Feb. 20, and the usual good time is promised. Arrangements for this and other social features of the meeting are, as usual, in hands of the New York Sec- tion, of which the chairman this year, Ralph M. Roosevelt, has a well-established reputation earned as president of the Zinc Institute, as host.

THE phenomena of concentric arrangement of minerals in rock-masses, generally known as "orbicular structure," have of late received much attention from investigators. Lawson, of the University of California, has described the orbicular gabbro at Dehesa, San Diego county, Cal. Kessler and Hamilton, of Stanford University, working independently upon the same subject, published their descriptions,2 giving also a list of many other localities in Europe and America where orbicular rocks are found, adding copious references to the literature of the subject. The orbicular diorite of the type locality in Corsica., familiar to mineralogists and petrologists under the name "Napoleonite," was described by Vogelslang in 1862.3 Chrustschoff, of St. Petersburg, has also given much atten¬tion to the subject, and is the author of a classification of the various known forms of orbicular structure.4 No complete and satisfactory explanation of the origin of or¬bicular aggregations in rocks has yet been offered. The patent fact is generally recognized that the constituent minerals have crystallized from a more or less molten or plastic magma, but why these minerals should be arranged in concentric spheres or crusts has not been clearly shown. BENTONITE deposits are known to occur in Texas within the Jackson group of formations. This group represents the uppermost Eocene age sediments found in the coastal plain area of Texas. It outcrops across this area of the state in a narrow band of some 4 to 20 miles width. The outcrop pattern roughly parallels the present Gulf of Mexico shore line and is some 100 miles inland from the Texas shore, Fig 1. The principal bentonite deposits are found in the areas where this outcrop pattern cuts across the south-central Texas counties of Karnes, Gonzales, and Fayette. In these deposits, the better quality bentonite is found in the lower or bottom layers of the volcanic ash deposits in which they occur. Some of these better quality bentonites develop very light colors upon firing and therefore justify their being classified as "white firing." The deposits in Karnes and Gonzales Counties apparently occur in commercial quantity, whereas the white firing strata so far uncovered in Fayette County have been too thin to be classified as yet as "commercial." A study of the ceramic properties of the weathered ash in Gonzales and Karnes Counties was reported in 1941.1

DURING the work at the test mill in Morenci, it was determined that a suitable feed for the ball mills could be made by a single pass through a short-head cone crusher. These crushers did not require a closed circuit delivering only a screen product to the mills, such as is the practice in some concentrators. By no means does this mean that the practice in these other concentrators is wrong, but just that the Morenci ore can be most economically crushed and ground in this manner. Therefore, the design of the secondary crushing plant was simply a problem of taking 25,000 tons of ore per 16 hour day from the primary crusher, this ore ranging in size from fine particles to 10 or 12 in., and reducing it to minus 3/4 in. Inasmuch as outages must be contended with in any crushing plant, it was assumed that the crusher would operate at full capacity for approximately only twleve hours per day, which is three-quarter capacity for the 16-hour shift. With this in mind, it was necessary to design a crushing plant which would average approximately 1600 tones per hour for the 16-hour day, or 2000 tons per hour for slightly over 12 hours per day.

RECENT experiments indicate that the usual type of concentrating-table is not only poorly adapted to produce the desired results, but also is based upon an incorrect principle, namely, the use of riffles to perform the work of stratifying the various minerals. We have heard a good deal about riffles for concentrating-tables; exhaustive experiments have been made to discover the proper form of riffle, or to prove the superiority this or that form; disputes and patent-litigation have arisen over the matter of riffles, and thus many have been led to believe that the riffle is the saving-device upon which the process of concentration depends. In the present paper it is proposed to show that the riffle is greatly overrated as to the part it performs in the concentration of minerals, and that, in the near future, it may possibly be eliminated entirely from that process. The experiments in question have shown that the troublesome riffle can be considered of secondary importance at the most, and should be so classed in the construction of a concentrating-table built upon the right lines. The action of any form of riffle on a concentrating-table is such as to upset and retard the process of settling and stratifying the various minerals on the table-deck. From the deck of a riffled table no concentrates can be delivered until the deck is "bedded," that is, until a sufficient amount of metallic values have been fed to the table to spread over a large portion of the deck, forming a substratum of the heavier minerals. This substratum must be maintained by the feed within quite narrow limits, and directly proportional to the rate of discharge from the table, in order that the bed shall not be lost. HOW have recent events affected the general trend in world mineral production? What effect has the World War, with its resultant boom and depression, had on the long-term trend of output? Have all of the principal metals and fuels been similarly affected, or have some boomed or slumped much more than others? The trend of world production of coal, iron, the principal nonferrous metals, and petroleum is shown in the accompanying chart, covering the period from 1882 to 1931 inclusive-the last fifty years. The curves are plotted logarithmically to show the comparative trends. In the lower left-hand corner of the chart is a slope diagram to aid in visually evaluating. the average yearly rate of increase in production; from this one can easily see, for example, that the petroleum production curve indicates an average annual increase of around 8 per cent, and that up to the period of the World War the average annual increase in copper production was about 6 per cent.

RECORDS in mining operations naturally fall when improved equipment and methods are developed. And tunneling through the Continental Divide is a mining operation, even though the tunnel was not driven to strike a vein at depth. Although many engineering feats have been successfully accomplished in the development of water supplies in the Western States, the Twin Lakes Tunnel in Colorado presents some unusual features that make it noteworthy. To begin with, it is the first trans-mountain water diversion project in the West. The fact that the Continental Divide intervenes between where the water is and where it is needed was brushed, aside as of minor importance. It was enough to know that on the western side of Independence Pass, the highest in Colorado, with an elevation of 12,095 ft., there was water which was needed on the eastern side, where the Twin Lakes are situated, forming the

A company must have an organized approach to effectively sort through the profusion of available software and hardware and find the programs and equipment which fit defined needs. The selection process must build a complete compatible system which includes hardware and software. The methodology presented in this paper helps identify some of the more important considerations. The steps needed for an organized approach to software/hardware selection are: •All involved staff should contribute to an assessment of current computer capabilities and projection of future needs. •Alternatives are analyzed to determine what software and hardware is available and how selections may possibly be merged into the existing computer system. The evaluation process focuses on details of program capability and hardware compatibility. Analysis must be done to determine how closely individual programs fit the established requirements. The final decision is often a balance of needs between program capabilities and hardware availability. Any programs selected must be able to run on existing and newly purchased hardware. Any additional hardware selected must be capable of meshing with the available computer system.

IN the pressure die-casting of zinc alloys it is customary to force the molten alloy under high pressure into a permanent steel die by means of a plunger moving in a bushing that has a clearance on the diameter of the order of 0.002 in. Successful operation of the plunger type of machine requires the presence in the zinc alloy of certain percentages of aluminum. Without these aluminum additions, the normal reaction of molten zinc on ferrous materials causes sticking of the plunger and a complete shutdown of the equipment. All of the zinc alloys used for pressure die-casting today contain approximately 4 per cent of aluminum, which is more than sufficient to make plunger operation feasible. The clearance between the plunger and its bushing is an important matter. As the space becomes larger, there is a loss in effective metal pressure. Ordinary gray cast iron served fairly well and is still used in some machines. However, the rate at which the plunger clearance increases with this material is considered by many to be far too great. There is, therefore, a serious interest in finding new materials more capable of retaining the desired clearance during long periods of use. Today many die casters are using special materials for plungers and bushings selected by the somewhat expensive and time-consuming test of actual experience. An analysis of the problem reveals two possible end points of plunger operation: (1) the building up of zinc-alloy plunger-material reaction products in sufficient bulk to cause sticking and (2) rapid solution, wear or erosion, all of which will increase the clearance to an undesirable extent. If neither of these takes place, the plunger will operate for a long time, of course. The authors have developed a laboratory apparatus in which the action of a plunger moving in a bushing immersed in molten zinc alloy could be simulated closely. Such a machine made possible a more rapid and less expensive survey of the available construction materials and an analysis of the specific alloying reactions taking place in the clear-ance area.

MANY hundreds of publications have appeared during the past 78 years that treat the subject of hydrogen in iron and steel,105 but conclusions regarding the functions of hydrogen in causing some important defects in steel are still unsatisfactory to many; and other hydrogen-caused phenomena yet remain to be identified with this gas. The most widely discussed of these defects is hydrogen embrittlement, but the conception, perhaps the popular one, that embrittlement is due to hydride formation does not conform to the known facts.104 The true identity of hydrogen embrittlement seems instead to lie in a mosaic nature of metal crystals, which is a concept not yet accepted by most metallurgists. A study of hydrogen embrittlement therefore provides new viewpoints in regard to the crystalline substructure of steel. A second widely discussed hydrogen-caused defect is the "flake" or "shatter crack." Although it is generally agreed that the presence of hydrogen is a prerequisite for their appearance, it is also realized that internal stress plays a decisive part. The relationship of hydrogen to internal stress has not been explained very clearly; nor is it always clear what the relationship is between a "flake" and a "snowflake," or between a "fish eye" and a "shatter crack." More importantly, the relationships among hydrogen embrittlement, hydrogen-caused fissures such as "flakes" and the ultramicroscopic structure of steel have scarcely been recognized. The present investigation attempts to provide an explanation for the embrittlement of steel by hydrogen by showing cause for accepting the "block" concept of metal crystals, and then to show how the numerous hydrogen-caused defects are interrelated in the light of this concept. EVIDENCE OF SUBSTRUCTURE IN METAL CRYSTALS It appears that the concept of a crystal as an aggregate of smaller multi-atom units must be accepted in some form if the behavior of metals is to be understood. The abundant literature on the evidence of an ultramicroscopic "mosaic" structure in metals and other crystalline substances suggests that the physicist has provided the metallurgist with an invaluable new insight. The exact picturization that any one physicist provides may be open to question, but the fact that there is some such fundamental substructure seems undeniable. The present work makes no pretense of comprehensively treating the imperfection structure theories. Nor will conclusions be drawn here regarding the exact nature of the substructure of crystals. However, the acceptance of some imperfection theory of fundamental attributes seems so necessary to an understanding of the behavior of hydrogen in steel that the following brief

THE method of making coke that has been adopted at the Kaiping and other collieries in northern China resembles, to some extent, the familiar bee-hive oven process of the United States, except that a kiln with permanent sides is used instead of a closed oven, and the products of combustion are drawn off at the bottom, In building coke-kilns in China, two circular holes, 8 ft. 6 in. in diameter at the bottom and 13 ft. in diameter at the top, are excavated in the ground, both being .connected at the bottom by a flue as shown in Fig. 1. The sides and bottom of the kiln are lined with fire-bricks, and covered with a layer of fire-clay, and a rectangular opening, 6 in. by 8 in., connects the bottom of each kiln with the main flue. Around the edge of the hole, and overlapping the lining, is a wall of fire-brick extending .2 ft. 6 in. above the level of the ground. An open space 5 ft. wide is left in this wall, through which the coal is carried into the kiln and the resultant coke removed. This space, of course, is bricked up during the time that the coking operation is being carried on. The wall is pierced with nine flue-openings uniformly placed around the circumference, each intervening space in the wall being strengthened with a brick buttress, as is shown in Figs. 2 and 4. The floor of the kiln, as well as the main flue, is lined with fire-brick. Before charging the coal, it is first placed in shallow bamboo sieves, 2 ft. in diameter, and immersed in a trough 10 ft. long, and 3 ft. wide, fed with pit-water; in which it is washed by hand. Fig. 3 shows the manner in which the washing is done. From 25 tons of good " dust" coal, 22.5 tons of washed coal are obtained. THE No. 9 mine of the Wheeling & Lake Erie Coal Mining Co., a subsidiary of M. A. Hanna & Co., at Fairpoint, Ohio, has normally produced about 1000 tons of coal daily for several years, but recently it was converted into an experimental mine to afford means of studying new methods and equipment under consideration for development and mining. Among other projects, the possibility of using a duck-bill, self- loading conveyor in driving entries, with a view of in- creasing the rate of progress where quick development is of importance was studied. Actual operation soon revealed that even though break-throughs are made ,every 60 ft., as required by the state mining laws, the :amount of natural Ventilation reaching the working face was not sufficient to supply the men and that in ,order to obtain a plentiful supply of pure. air and maximum efficiency and to avoid costly interruptions after shots, it was necessary to supply auxiliary ventilation by using Ventube and a Vano fan.

(Canal Zone Meeting, November, 1910,) THE Altar district, State of Sonora, Mexico, is for the most part a desert with but little rain-fall and few running streams. On account of this scarcity of water it is necessary for the natives to " dry-wash" the placer-gravel, and the object of the present paper is to describe some of the more common Mexican dry-washing devices. My observations were confined to a property known as Las Palomas placers, 15 miles from the Gulf of California and about 150 miles south of the United States border; a brief description of which property may be of interest as illustrating what is, perhaps, a typical Sonora dry placer. It is said that as long as a century ago the Yaqui Indians discovered rich cement-gravel, known as argo masa, at Las Palomas, and that there has been a more or less steady production of gold from the property ever since. The argo masa is a fairly-coarse gravel, the pebbles being quite firmly held together with a lime cement. Gold is scattered through this cement in particles ranging from fine specks to pieces several grams in weight, and occasional large nuggets are encountered. The contents vary so widely that it is difficult to estimate the average value, but returns of from $10 to $50 per cubic yard are common, and it is doubtful if the Indians considered anything less than from $4 to $5 a yard as "pay dirt." This argo masa occurs in channels varying in thickness from a few inches to several feet, and in width up to 300 ft.. These channels are continuous and are probably ancient stream-beds. They are for the most part covered with an over-burden of a more recent gravel, varying from 30 to 50 ft. thick, and the fact that this over-burden contains values as high as $1.50 per cubic yard, and yet was not worked by the Indians, shows that their idea of what constituted pay-ground was high.
