Views and conceptions of the origin, composition, and general nature of coal differ so widely that to determine the real extent of actual knowledge is no easy matter. The chemist finds difficulty in attacking the chemical problems and the engineer lacks a broad chemical basis for the study of his problems. Thus the economical and efficient utilization of coal in the industries suffers from a lack of knowledge of the composition of coal itself. Most scientists interested in this matter, as has been brought out in discussions during the recent investigation of coal problems, appear to have only a vague idea of the components of coal and their origin. Some are even in doubt as to whether substances derived from the wood and resins of plants form a part of coal; and few seem to have more than the dimmest idea of what are the components of coal, the condition in which these now exist, and the transformations that they haye undergone. Although during the paiilt century or more many co.rrect observations have been made and recorded, these were falsely or inadequately interpreted, so that many of the interpretations rendered are contradictory. As a result there has been great confusion. Many of the observations made in the past, although accurate and correct, could not be explained, because the principles involved in a correct solution of the problem were not then known. For example, Parkinson, Hutton, Petzhold, Guembel, and others made valuable discoveries regarding the processes by which plant substances are transformed into coal, but as the principles involved are those of colloidal chemistry, a science not known to the scientific world of that time, the observed facts could not be interpreted and the solution of the whole problem was blocked. The explanation of the true meaning of the alternating bright and dull bands so familiar in all ordinary bituminous coals afforCls another example. This banding has been observed and recorded from the earliest times, and has led to the forming of many false theories. Some gAologists, for example, have endeavored to explain the bands as due to alternating climatic conditions during the coal-forming period. Had the geologists known the true nature of coal they could not have made this mistake nor many others made in the past. To fill in a few of these gaps and to clarify some of the existing confusion is the aim of this paper. The immediate cause that led the author to investigate further the composition of coal and the origin and structure of its constituents was that when an attempt was made to discover the meaning of the coking and noncoking properties of coal a more exact knowledge of the nature of coal was required than was then available.

ON THE 6TH JULY in the year 1953 an announcement was made to the public that touched off one of the greatest staking rushes in the history of mining in Canada and resulted, in tl1e space of a few short years, in the development of the greatest reserves of uranium-bearing ore in the world. It was ?On this date that the famous "Blind River back-door staking bee" was completed with the acquisition of some 2,000 claims by the Preston East Do me-Technical Mine Consultant teams under the direction of Mr. Franc Joubin and Mr. Robert C. Hart. That story has been told from coast to Coast and is too well known now to re-quire elaboration. Suffice to say that, in the short elapsed time of less tl1an five years from that momentous summer of 1953, three of the Algoma mines are in full production, three more are rapidly nearing full production, five more 1are approaching the production stage, a new hard-surfaced highway, 108, has been built to serve the area, and a brand new, completely planned city, Elliot Lake, is being built to provide the amenities of living to the 22,000 people already in the area.

This study gives an analysis of the copper system byproducts and discusses the identification and classification of byproduct metals and their supply systems. Arsenic, platinum-group metals, silver, gold, selenium, tellurium, molybdenum, rhenium, uranium, aluminum, magnesium, and byproduct copper, lead, and zinc from complex ores are covered. The report describes several metallurgical systems, the marginal and incremental products costs of byproduct subsystems, industry structure and organization, and the historical data on price, consumption, and supply. Supply curves are presented for about one-half of the byproduct metals studied. The study develops a conceptual framework for analysis by reviewing the present concepts of byproduct supply and the related price theory. It gives the sources of supply of the individual byproduct metals to indicate the importance of the byproduct supply to the total supply. Mills, smelters, and refineries processing byproduct materials for their metal content are identified by geographic location and company ownership, The study also includes information on the reserves-resource base supporting byproduct output, reserve estimates, and the demand aspects of each byproduct metal.

During the last 20 years, more than 80 km (50 miles) of tunnels have been constructed in the Los Angeles, CA area. Recent projects include The East Central Interceptor Sewer (ECIS), completed in 2004. It spans more than 18 km (11 miles). The Northeast Interceptor Sewer (NEIS), completed in 2005, spans 11 km (7 miles). And the 2-km (1.3-mile) Metropolitan Transportation Authority?s Gold Line Eastside Extension (MCGLEE) was completed in 2006. All of the tunnel routes lay beneath heavily populated urban environments so minimizing ground surface settlement was critical to the success of the projects. Previous tunneling efforts in the Los Angeles area using open shield methods resulted in significant settlement that damaged roads, utilities, buildings and other structures. Earth pressure balance (EPB), or slurry machines, were specified for these projects to reduce subsidence risk. The contractors chose EPB tunnel boring machines (TBM) for the work. The closed and pressured face of the EPB TBM reduces loss of ground at the tunnel face and, when the machines are used in combination with gasketed pre-cast tunnel liners and backfill grout behind the installed segments, losses from over-cut of the excavated surface are also reduced.

This bulletin is issued by the Bureau of Mines as a contribution to the increase of safety and efficiency in the preparation and utilization of the mineral resources in the United States. Notable among the drains on these resources are the demands made by the nonferrousmetal industries, and in these the losses occasioned in melting brass and bronze are worthy of particular attention. This statement will be better appreciated by a consideration of the size of the brass industry. MAGNITUDE OF THE BRASS INDUSTRY. According to the Thirteenth Census, in 1909 there were in the United States 1,021 fu-ms that dealt mainly in brass and bronze. This total included jobbing foundries, manufacturing plants that both cast and machine a brass or bronze product, and rolling mills, but did not include iron foundries having nonferrous departments nor the numerous large brass-foundry departments of manufacturing plants that produce the castings used in the manufacture of electrical apparatus, cash registers, pumps, and the thousands of machines that require brass castings for their construction. Penton's Foundry List for 1910 gives about 1,150 exclusively nonferrous foundries and about 2,300 iron or steel foundries that also melt brass. If the rolling mills and. jobbing foundries in manufacturing plants be included, and if due credit be given to the rapid growth of the industry in the last few years, largely through the stimulation of the automobile busi¬ness, it is probable that not less than 3,600 plants are to-day melting brass or bronze.

The Archaeozoic Willyama Complex at Broken Hill has suffered several periods of deformation and metamorphism. New structural and petrological information together with that available from the literature gives a picture of the metamorphic evolution of the Barrier Ranges. Several epochs of metamorphism are recognized, and potassium-argon dating of minerals has been applied with limited success to the resolution of these epochs.INTRODUCTIONAdvancements in the mineral industry at Broken Hill over the past eighty years have been accompanied by a continual striving towards increased understanding of both the geological history of the Barrier Ranges and the environment of the Broken Hill ore deposits. However, although many detailed studies of selected localities and particular-aspects of Broken Hill geology have been carried out recently, the regional geology of the Barrier Ranges as a whole has received little attention from a petrological viewpoint since the pioneer investigations of Mawson (1912) and Browne (1922). There still remains a great need for regional surveys combining field studies of the habits, structures and outcrop relationships of the various rock types with laboratory investigations of their chemistry, mineralogy and microscopic ,fabrics. Recording observations arising from three brief visits to the Broken Hill area during 1959 and 1963 may stimulate further surveys.During one of these visits, the generosity of the Zinc Corporation Limited in providing field transport and geological guidance enabled the writer to collect material and study field relationships and appearance of the various rock types at numerous localities covering most of the Willyama outcrop. Open pit anthracite mining at the Canmore Creek Mines, Canmore, Alberta, south of Banff National Park, resulted in several pit lakes by the early 1970’s. To enable future mining opportunities in the Rocky Mountains, operators decided to reclaim the site into a non-polluting landscape which would provide a memorable outdoor experience for residents and visitors alike, and would preserve wildlife habitat. Reclamation began with the stabilization and revegetation of spoil piles adjacent to Canmore Creek, and the backfilling and revegetation of Canmore Creek Mines No. 1 and 2 to create “Salamander Pond.” The company dammed the outlet of an open pit at Canmore Creek Mine No. 3 to raise the water level and create Quarry Lake. Reclamation concluded in 1980 when the Town of Canmore took ownership. Quarry Lake is now the centerpiece of 293-acre Quarry Lake Heritage Park, a popular destination for swimming, hiking, and fishing, visited by about 400 people on summer days. The Alberta Environment Conservation Authority described this as “The best mine reclamation in Western Canada.” Quarry Lake is an exceptional example of walk-away, pit lake closure, where the mining company created a valued post-mining asset and was released from future liabilities. INTRODUCTION One of the most important environmental issues associated with contemporary open pit mining is the closure of mine pit lakes, and the perpetual legacy these lakes can potentially generate. Ideally, successful pit lake closure includes the following: (i) the water quality within the pit lake, plus surface water and groundwater discharging from the pit lake, meets pre-mining, or other acceptable water quality conditions of the receiving environment, (ii) the termination of all active treatment processes, (iii) the return of the pit lake to the government for long-term care and maintenance, (iv) the release of the mining company from all future liabilities associated with the pit lake, (v) the return the environmental bond to the mining company, and (vi) the reuse of the pit lake for some post-closure, beneficial purpose. The achievement of these goals is known as “walk away, pit lake closure.” Peer-reviewed, publications of successful walk away, pit lake closure provide mining companies the ability to address public concerns regarding the safety of pit lakes which commonly occur during the permitting, operations, and closure phases of mining. To date, most published work on walk away, pit lake closure work has occurred in the coal mining sector in Germany and Australia (McCullough et al., 2009; Jones and McCullough, 2011; Kumar et al., 2013; Schultz et al., 2013). However, in North America, examples of walk away, pit lake closure are not widely discussed in the literature despite there being excellent examples from the coal mining sector in Alberta, Canada (e.g. Pleasure Island, Black Diamond, East Pit, Sphynx, Robb, Lovette, Siltstone, and Sterling), and from the iron mining sector in Minnesota in the United States (e.g. Portsmouth Lake, see MNDNR, 2018). Although seldom included in discussions of pit lakes from the metal and coal mining sectors, the aggregate and fabricated-stone mining sectors also produce pit lakes, and there are numerous examples throughout North America where these pit lakes have been successfully closed and transformed into post-mining resources. The difficulty of finding these good examples in the literature makes it challenging for companies to respond to public and regulatory questions regarding pit lake closure and reuse. As such, there is a pressing need document the motivations and approaches used in examples of successful, walk away, pit lake closure in North America so that the mining industry at large can learn from these examples and can better address public concerns.

With construction underway on the 22.5 km (14 mile) Initial Segment of the Link Light Rail transit system in Seattle (including the one-mile EPB-driven running tunnels and mined station at Beacon Hill), the Sound Transit Board on May 20, 2004 voted on selection of a preferred route for an approximately eight-mile extension northwards from the central business district to Northgate, and authorized immediate start of advanced conceptual/preliminary engineering and geotechnical exploration programs scheduled to be completed in Spring 2005. The extension includes approximately914 m (30,000) route-feet of bored running tunnels, a mined station with platform level approximately 60 m (200 ft) below grade, three (possibly four) cut-and-cover stations and a cut-and-cover cross-over structure, as well as an aerial terminal station at Northgate and other line-section below-grade and aerial structures. All tunneling will be in glacial soils.

"Indonesia is the second largest coal exporter to Japan, accounting for about 30 Mt annually. They produced over 400 Mt in 2015, over 99% of which is from open-cut mines. However, the conditions of surface mining are becoming worse year by year: the stripping ratio is increasing, the economy is worsening, and the infrastructure for coal transportation from inland mining areas is not being maintained. To meet the demand for coal in Indonesia and the rest of the world, underground mines have to be developed. In consideration of growing need, our research program is conducting a study on the potential for an underground coal mine in Indonesia. This research is being done through the roadway heading research program, which is looking into developing an underground coal mine from an open pit highwall. The greatest challenge for underground coal mine development in Indonesia is the maintaining the safety of the mine roadway during heading because the roof rock is exceptionally weaker. There is a potential for heading below mobile, unconsolidated soft sediment, and instead mining a deep area. This increases the likelihood for problems in the stability of the support system due to increasing ground pressure. The ground behavior around the roadway was measured using telltales, extensometers, and convergence measurements. Moreover, rock property tests were also conducted on exploration drilling cores. Based on the geological dates and monitoring data, a series of numerical analyses were conducted in order to assess support needs in the main roadway under different depths. Results of numerical analyses indicate that the current arch support design is effective when the mining depth is lower than 100m. However, if the mining depth is larger than 100m, the current arch support design should be changed to include the application of higher yield strength material, shorter spacing, etc. Moreover, bolting may also be useful if ground pressure is high locally. Based on a series of measurement data of ground and support behavior, a control criterion for main roadways under weak geological conditions is proposed in this paper."

The number of persons fatally injured in the California petroleum industry in 1932 was 24, a decrease of 6, or 20 percent from the number killed in 1931. The decrease in the number of fatalities occurring in 1932 caused the fatality curve of the California petroleum industry to reach its lowest point in 10 years. Changing conditions in the oil industry - reduced personnel, decreased active field development, and curtailed production - have undoubtedly caused a part of this decrease, but continued accident-prevention efforts by the industry have also contributed to the reduction in the number of fatalities for 1932. The Bureau of Mines has analyzed and reported annually the fatalities in the California petroleum industry for a period of 10 years. Figure 1 shows the trend of fatal accidents during that period. Fatality statistics for 1932 show that the drilling and producing, pipe line and transportation, and refining and natural gasoline divisions of the industry had fewer accidents in 1932 than in 1931, sales and marketing being the only division that showed an increase over 1931. The number of fatalities by divisions for 1931 and 1932, percent of total, and percentages of increase and decrease are given in Table 1.

Multiple seam underground coal mining is ubiquitous in Appalachia. Many coal properties have from two to ten or more economically mineable coal seams. Because of the ability to penetrate 600-feet to 1,000-feet or deeper into the mountainside leaving panels of web pillars separated by barrier pillars, highwall mining is a hybrid between surface and underground mining. As a result, many of the ground control problems commonly associated with multiple seam underground mining exist with multiple seam highwall mining. These include: i) superjacent mines, subsidence and caving propagating to overlying seams and ii) mines, pooled water and the potential for inundation resulting from a iii) breakthrough between an active highwall mine and abandoned underground mines in the same or superjacent seams, the presence of overlying or underlying mine workings where iv) pillar columnization in the active mine is not possible, and v) the question of whether to mine ?top-down? or ?bottom-up.? Case histories are presented from southeast Ohio where the Middle Kittanning No. 6 and Lower Kittanning No. 5 seams are successfully highwall mined with 20-feet to 40-feet of largely shale interburden. A highwall miner was caught in a highwall collapse in the Middle Kittanning No. 6 seam when it was overmining auger workings in the Lower Kittanning No. 5 seam. Multiple seam interaction caused by the overmining transferred overburden stress onto the Lower Kittanning No. 5 seam. The overburden concentrated through web pillars initiated auger web pillar failure, resulting in roof collapse and subsidence in the Lower Kittanning No. 5 seam that propagated up to the Middle Kittanning No. 6 seam. A second case history involves multiple seam highwall mining in southeast Kentucky. The A3 Rider, A3, B2, and C1 seams are being highwall mined around abandoned underground mines in the A3 and B2 seams and augering in the A3 Rider. Because of spoil storage constraints for the surface contour mines, the highwall miner follows the active pits in each seam so a standard sequence of ?top-down? or ?bottom-up mining does not exist. The planning and engineering design considerations associated with each case history is presented along with geotechnical information. In the case of the highwall collapse a back analysis is presented of the stability and safety factors for the auger webs, highwall miner web pillars, and barrier pillars.

The treatment of a hydrobiotite containing 0·64 per cent copper with various soluHons showed that a high percentage (up to 90 per cent) of the copper can be extracted under mild conditions (1 M BCI, 85°C) or withsaline solutions (20 per cent by weight NaCI or NH4F, 400°C). The latter results suggest that the copper is incorporated in the interstratified vermiculite of a vermicuHte-biotite mica and the solutions (NaCl and NH4F) which reacted with the vermiculite without attacking the biotite gave the highest extraction yields.In general, extraction yields with saline solutions increased with the temperature (between 100 and 400°C) and duration (3 or 6 days) of the treatment but were not appreciably affected by the initial pH of solutions.The results of RCI treatment especially may have a bearing on the hydrometallurgical treatment of refractory copper ores where copper is tied to gangue silicates.

Most people involved in the mining industry are familiar with student-industry co-op work-study programs. Many colleges and universities have used them for years. Northern College’s Haileybury School of Mines student co-op program adds a new dimension of productivity to the college and the mining industry. The college is located in Hailey-bury, Ontario, Canada. An example of the program’s success is the school’s relationship with Sabin Metal’s SMC (Canada) Ltd.’s McAlpine Mill in Cobalt, Ontario. Students gain practical knowledge and experience while industry gains an eager-to-learn worker. And many of the college’s advanced research services are made available to industry to supplement their own capabilities. The McAlpine Mill was established to provide custom milling of slags and ores. It also recovers metal values from other products of the primary and secondary precious metal industries.

"The Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) and Nordic Ocean Resources AS, with support from Statoil ASA have carried out a project reviewing the knowledge about seabed mineral resources in Norway to identify and prioritize needs for further research and development.A special focus area in the project has been to increase the knowledge of possible massive sulfide mineralizations along the Mid-Atlantic Ridge. This Ridge is a subsea mountain range which separates the Eurasian and the North American continental plates. In this area, seafloor massive sulphides (SMS) are formed from the volcanic and hydrothermal activities along the Ridge. A large part of the North-Atlantic Mid-Atlantic Ridge between Jan Mayen and Spitsbergen is located on the Norwegian shelf.Analysis and interpretations of multibeam data have been carried out by NTNU in cooperation with the Russian Institute for Geology and Mineral Resources of the Oceans in order to disclose relevant areas for the formation of SMS deposits. This analysis has identified several promising areas."

Despite the current downturn, coal remains an important commodity in the Australian economy. Increasing coal resource development has resulted in increasing competition for land use in coal mining regions across the country with communities and other stakeholders becoming more adept at articulating their concerns regarding this competition in a range of traditional and social forms of media. In this environment, obtaining and maintaining a social licence to operate (SLO) is problematic and has been identified as the fourth greatest risk facing the international mining industry.This research presents the findings from a longitudinal study on how Australian newspapers frame the views of coal mining stakeholders across each stage of the coal mining life cycle. News stories from national, state and regional newspapers in 2000, 2006 and 2013 were analysed.Over the study period, there have been significant changes in the coal mining themes being covered by Australian newspapers, the number of stories being published, the number of newspapers covering coal mining stories, and the diversity of stakeholders being quoted. How do the dominant themes in media communication change over time? How do these changes impact mining across the life-of-mine?The research confirmed that Australian journalists use framing, priming, labels and bias to conceptualise and understand the events that they report, and that this behaviour has a profound effect on public opinion.CITATION:Worden, S, Kirsch, A and Kirsch, P A, ?2014. Magnesia minerals are included in most iron ore sinter mixes to provide the MgO requirements of blast furnace slag. The properties of these minerals have an influence on the eventual sintering properties of the mixes. A detailed study was undertaken of serpentine and dolomite and the use of limestone, olivine and magnesite was also investigated. A consideration of particle properties indicated that as these materials calcine a reduction in size can occur together with cracking and changes in surface properties. These changes could affect the permeability of the sintering bed and sintering performance. Studies of sintering reactions showed that magnesium and calcium, formed from the calcination of dolomite, are extremely mobile before the formation of melt. Evidence suggests that the movement of these oxides into surrounding areas is via a solid-state diffusion process. The diffusion of Ca into the surrounding hematite particles is faster than that of Mg, resulting in the formation of dicalcium ferrite and magnetite or magnesioferrite, the last two subsequently being converted to dicalcium ferrite in the presence of Ca with removal of Mg from the structure as ferroan periclase. Studies of pilot-plant sinters indicated that reaction mechanisms formulated from the bench-scale studies were occurring in actual sintering processes. The differences in sintering reactions between dolomite and serpentine were considered to be the major cause of differences in the availability of lime for bonding phase formation. Pilot-scale studies indicated that the sintering properties of a mix containing dolomite could be improved by increasing the basicity of the sinter mix while keeping the MgO level constant

Gentlemen: I'm glad to see the crowd that's here this morning, glad to renew acquaintances with many old friends, and if you'll look at the program you'll see a heading there which states that as President I have the honor and pleasure to be here to address the membership of this meeting of the Rocky Mountain Coal Mining Institute, this being the 49th regular meeting. The tentative schedule of this gathering lists on the program the "President's Address," and I want to assure you that this will not be an address or a lengthy speech. It's said that a good speaker is one who arises to the occasion and then promptly sits clown, so please be at ease for I intend to sit clown very soon. There are other men here who have spent time writing and preparing papers on subjects that are to come up for discussion at this meeting, which will be, I'm sure, more interesting than what I have to say this morning; so again I'll say, we'll get this part of the program under way promptly.

In the present work, a reduction roasting experimental study of Greek nickeliferous laterite samples with a gaseous reducing mixture ? CO:N2- is presented. The effect of parameters such as temperature, ore grain size, and composition of the reducing mixture were examined. It is deduced that the reducibility of intermediate type laterite sample, where iron appears mainly in the form of goethite (a-FeOOH), is considerably higher than that of limonitic type laterite samples, where hematite (a-Fe2O3) is the predominant iron mineral phase. The degree of reduction of the limonitic type laterite samples does not exceed 50%, while it reaches 95% in the case of the intermediate-type laterite sample under the same experimental conditions. Increasing the temperature in the range 750-900°C does not considerably favor the reduction of the limonitic type laterites, whereas decrease of ore grain size of the limonitic-type ore samples and more intense reducing conditions increase the reduction. The considerably higher specific surface area values of the intermediate laterite samples, diminishes the effect of the ore grain size and this can be regarded as the critical parameter leading to the higher reducibility of this ore.

Anglo American Platinum has adopted a strategy of Best Practice Principles (BPP) for sampling, mass measurement, analysis and metal accounting for more than a decade now. When new plants are designed, the most suitable sampling equipment and sampling protocols are implemented and material flows and plant layouts are designed around sampling strategies. A few years ago, a crushing plant for a high-grade matte stream was commissioned.The design called for the high-grade material to be crushed to 95 per cent passing 2 mm and the design allowed for a single cutter primary Vezin sampler, increments taken from a gravity flowing stream at regular intervals, whilst filling a tanker for the pneumatic offload at our base metal refinery. This was a single point of sampling and analysis that would measure the wanted output from our smelting complex and the input to our refineries. In addition, the design incorporated the functionality to collect increments in an ‘interleaved’ fashion from the Vezin sampler for internal precision checks.The metal accounting strategy for Anglo Platinum is the ongoing measurement of all inputs, outputs and stock levels for all our operations for platinum group metal (PGM) and base metal (BM) content. Included are yearly stocktakes, usually done on 1 February every year, across the smelters and refineries (at least the base metal refinery). A trend was developing in the accounting period immediately following the introduction of the new crushing and sampling facility, whereby the absolute difference between the physical stock and theoretical stock (PGMs predominantly) increased for the two respective sites on an ongoing basis. The smelter (sender) showed an increase in physical stock compared to the theoretical stock and the base metal refinery (receiver) showed that their theoretical stock increased against their physical stock. Because of this anomaly, an additional stocktake was held in September for the period in question and it was confirmed through the physical stock measurement results, that the PGM accounting problem was indeed pointing towards the evaluation of the high-grade matte stream.This paper showcases parts of the process that took place to explain the poor accountabilities for the respective sites. Previous results from the sampler ratification process (of the interleaved sampling design) were analysed again, a physical inspection was carried out on the sampling system again and the sampler performance was monitored (quality control parameters) for the period.From these investigations, it was found that airflows present inside the Vezin introduced the sampling bias and a change in sampling protocol was introduced as well as physical changes to the sampling equipment were made to eliminate the airflow and thus the bias conditions significantly. The accounting period which followed, after a phased upgrading process, showed that the accounting between our smelter and base metal refinery had been restored to within statistical limits (difference between physical and theoretical stock below five per cent relative to theoretical stock).CITATION:Kruger, C J and le Roux, E, 2017. This paper briefly describes the principal commercial and near-commercial deposits of gold-bearing gravel and the important placer-mining operations in Lemhi County, Idaho. It is on of a series on western mining districts being published by the Bureau of Mines. This paper is based on a field survey of the placer-mining districts of Lemhi County in the summer of 1938. Available information concerning gold-bearing gravels was obtained from prospectors and claim owners; operators supplied the data on mining operations. No attempt was made actually to test the gravels. The principal object of the examination was to indicate placer areas worthy of further investigation by prospective operators.
