Canada's coal production is approximately 65.4 million tonnes of which 95 % is produced by surface mining methods mostly from the three Western provinces (British Columbia, Alberta and Saskatchewan). The mines are highly mechanized; productivity gains during the past few years have ranged from 60 -80%. Truck/Shovel methods are common although Saskatchewan lignite is almost exclusively mined by draglines. This paper provides an overview of Canadian Coal mining industry vis a vis surface mining. Emphasis is on application and utilization of mining equipment and associated mining methods.

Deposits of low-grade iron ores containing abundant goethite are distributed across the world. A common difficulty associated with beneficiating goethitic-rich ores is the poor liberation characteristics of the iron-bearing minerals which often contain finely disseminated gangue minerals such as kaolinite, gibbsite and quartz. Microwave-assisted heating has been proposed as an effective way of inducing dehydroxylation and associated mineral transformations in order to beneficiate low-grade goethitic ores. In this research, the mineral transformations occurring in a low-grade goethite-rich sample using microwave radiation was studied. Roasting conditions (up to 1000°C and under various CO/CO2 gas atmospheres) were designed to generate a magnetic product from a goethite-rich, reject waste stream sample sourced from an iron ore processing site in the Pilbara, Western Australia. Conditions (T, pO2) for transforming the raw material from hydrated goethite to hematite and eventually to magnetite are presented. Chemical and mineralogical characterisation of the raw material and roast products were conducted using X-ray fluorescence, X-ray diffraction, optical microscopy and scanning electron microscopy techniques to identify the mineralogical and chemical changes occurring during the heat treatment. Further steps are suggested to optimise the microwave-assisted magnetising roasting and correlate it with the application of magnetic separation techniques to maximise the efficiency of upgrading the iron content in low-grade iron ores.CITATION:Nunna, V, Hapugoda, S and Pownceby, M I, 2017. A preocupação com o adequado tratamento de resíduos industriais surgiu com o conceito de desenvolvimento sustentável criado pelo Clube de Roma e contribuiu para o uso racional dos recursos naturais ao longo dos últimos 50 anos. A preocupação com a produção responsável e uso judicioso de recursos naturais priorizou a reciclagem de materiais na agenda das empresas, tornando-se numa atividade de alta relevância, vital para a sustentabilidade econômica e ambiental. Este trabalho aborda os aspectos técnicos, econômicos e ambientais da reciclagem de resíduos contendo zinco através do estudo de caso de reciclagem de resíduos gerados no processo de fabricação de aço em Forno Elétrico, denominado pó de Aciaria Elétrica (PAE). A indústria ainda está em busca de tecnologias para redução da geração e reciclagem desse resíduo. A relevância do estudo está na utilização da Análise Hierárquica de Processo (AHP) para avaliação e seleção da melhor alternativa, entre várias, para tratamento e reciclagem do PAE. Como resultado, demonstrou-se a eficácia do uso da metodologia no empreendimento de reciclagem de resíduos contendo zinco implantado pela Votorantim, em Juiz de Fora, Minas Gerais.

Long-Term Open Pit Scheduler or L-TOPS is a new software package for evaluating, planning, and design of open pit mines. L-TOPS transforms geological, economic, and technical information about a mineral deposit into a detailed mining schedule that maximizes economic efficiency without neglecting the practical requirements of mining operations. L-TOPS has been customized for integration with Placer Dome Inc.'s existing in-house resource/reserve optimization software to function as a primary tool for property acquisition studies and for the designing of mines for feasibility studies. This pa-per presents an overview of L-TOPS and reports on its application to Placer Pacific's (Placer Dome's Australian affiliate) Mt. Rawdon project.

This paper will address the feasibility of using low-density cellular concrete (LDCC) for an annular fill application where project conditions required pumping the LDCC material for distances of up to 16,000 feet. These conditions occurred during construction of the Kaneohe-Kailua Sewer Tunnel in Oahu, Hawaii, between 2014 and 2018. Located on the island of Oahu, Hawaii, this 13-foot-diameter rock tunnel extends for approximately three miles from the Kaneohe Pre-Treatment Facility to the Kailua Regional Wastewater Treatment Plant. The tunnel was built to convey wastewater and provide temporary storage for peak wet weather flows entering the collection system, thereby reducing the potential for uncontrolled discharges. LDCC was chosen for this project partly due to its environmental benefits, which were essential for an application contiguous to the inland marine and coastal waters of the Pacific Ocean. In order to ensure optimal performance characteristics—compressive strength (with a requirement of 300 psi at 56 days), flowability, and light weight—were achieved, extensive testing of various LDCC products and mix designs was completed. The testing measured the initial set time of the LDCC as well as the compressive strength needed to reduce the quantity of grout lifts required for the project.

The U.S. Department of Interior, Bureau of Mines has evaluated the potential resource and annual availability of cobalt from 27 deposits or districts in 11 market-economy countries. More than 95 pct of primary cobalt production from market-economy countries, mainly byproduct output from copper and nickel operations, was analyzed. Approximately 1,200,000 mt of cobalt is potentially recoverable at the demonstrated resource level. Very large additional resources exist, especially in laterite deposits, but are at the inferred level. The producing operations evaluated in this study are expected to produce about 19,000 mt of cobalt in 1989, significantly less than the available capacity of about 31,000 mt. More than 14,000 mt per year of cobalt is produced from copper-cobalt deposits in Zaire and Zambia, of which 11,000 mt can be produced at a copper price of $O.60jlb or less with a O-pct discounted cash-flow rate of return (DCFROR). Approximately 4,400 mt of cobalt is produced annually from nickel-cobalt deposits in six countries, of which about 1,800 mt (in Canada and Brazil) could be produced at a nickel price of $1.50jlb or less at a D-pct DCFROR. Approximately 200 mt per year of cobalt is produced from a cobalt mine in Morocco. Most of the evaluated nonproducing operations and prospects that could potentially produce cobalt as a principal product or byproduct would require a total cost (including a 15 pct-DCFROR) significantly exceeding January, 1989 market prices of the principal commodities. Principal-commodity dependence, transportation routes, cobalt toxicity, and other issues that could affect the availability of cobalt are addressed herein.

Research was performed to evaluate copper and silver extraction from samples of bornite flotation concentrate. Sulfation roasting experiments were performed in a rotary tube furnace, a fluidized bed reactor, and a static bed muffle furnace. Roasting was plagued with rapid, lowtemperature calcine sintering, apparently related to the presence of organic matter in the concentrate. Calcine entered a weak acid leaching process to remove copper, and silver was extracted from the weak acid leach residue in a ferric chloride and hydrochloric acid solution. Copper extraction efficiencies in excess of 90% were attained in the weak acid leach while 90% silver extraction was achieved in the ferric chloride leach, along with copper and lead extractions as high as 93% and 99% respectively. The two-stage leaching process resulted in overall extraction efficiencies of 99% copper and 90% silver.

Better in situ performance data is required in order to advance the rational geomechanical design of cemented paste backfill systems. A few in situ test programs have been conducted, but these have suffered from too few measurement locations within the stope and have not used enough different types of transducers to fully capture the information of significance. In this paper the important geomechanical design aspects are listed, the underlying physical phenomena are described, and some previous in situ measurement efforts are reviewed. A new approach to in situ measurement campaigns is then described including measurement techniques, locations, and the logistical aspects of mobilizing transducers in an active mining environment. A work-in-progress is used to illustrate the principles and concepts involved.

This paper explains the ventilation designs for different production panels, the challenges faced, and the modifications made to optimize the ventilation systems. The study highlights the importance of a robust ventilation system for safe and productive mining.

The Federal Bureau of Mines investigated combustion of lignite in domes-tic heating equipment to obtain information on equipment performance and to evaluate testing procedures. Three types of domestic heating equipment were tested, ranging from a hand-tilled, magazine-type space heater to a ram-type overfeed stoker. Lignite was readily burned in each of the three units under various test conditions. Burnoff rates determined by adding weighed charges to the magazine were found to be in error because of shrinkage of the lignite when only a portion of the magazine capacity was consumed during a test. More reliable burnoff rates could be determined by carbon-nitrogen balances. A hand-fired magazine-type space heater (Booker heater) was operated without the furnace attachment at efficiencies to 75 pct. One test series was run with minimum supervision under conditions encountered in actual household operation. No mechanical trouble was encountered.

Acid mine drainage (AMD) occurs at operating and abandoned mine sites as a result of oxidation of sulphide minerals, and is characterized by low pH and heavy metal contamination (e.g. Fe, Zn, Cu, Cd, Al, Mn). It usually requires treatment before release in order to meet regulatory requirements. Chemical methods, such as lime neutralization and sulphide precipitation, are commonly used to treat AMD. However, the conventional processes require high capital and operating costs, and constant attention for many years into the future. In addition, the amount of sludge produced by conventional lime treatment processes poses an increasingly significant disposal problems at decommissioned mining operations. There is, therefore, an urgent need to develop passive, cost-effective processes for mitigating AMD and seepages originating from tailings and waste rock areas. Noranda Technology Centre (NTC) has been evaluating various methods being developed by other institutions, and exploring new ideas, to achieve passive in situ processes for treating AMD. These methods include anoxic limestone (ALS), lime-organic mixture (LOM), biosorbents (BIOS) and biotrench (BT). Current investigations at NTC involve preliminary bench-scale testing. Based on the outcome of the bench tests, a field test will be performed at a selected site. Details of the bench tests are discussed in the paper. The Pine Creek Inlier produced 12 440 kg of gold in the period from the first gold discovery in the 1860s to the early-1900s. During the 1930s renewed large-scale prospecting took place and gave a foothold for today's gold mining operations. The rise of the gold price and improved mining methods in the 1970s and 1980s made possible low cost, bulk low grade mining operations. Various gold deposits including vein, network and stratiform types occur in the Pine Creek Inlier (Nicholson and Eupene, 1990). The Tom's Gully deposit is located 100 km south-east of Darwin in the Northern Territory. It is hosted in the early Proterozoic Wildman Siltstone and lies north-east of 1800 my old Mt Bundey Pluton (Figure 1). Around the Mt Bundey Pluton, there are several prospective base and precious metal deposits such as Quest 29. The Tom's Gully gold deposit was discovered in 1986 and yielded a total of 3070 kg of gold from ore averaging 9.35 g/t gold between 1987 and 1990 when the mining operation was terminated.

Mercury was produced originally at the Idaho Almaden mine from 1939 to 1942. When the ;.nine was shut down, more than 100,000 tons of ore, containing from 2.5 to 3 pounds of mercury per ton, was known to be adjacent to old workings but had been considered too low grade for commercial operation. Later, detailed, systematic exploration by Rare Metals Corporation of America increased and delimited enough minable reserves for further operation to be foreseen for several years. The average grade of the ore is estimated at slightly more than 3.5 pounds of mercury per ton. Open-pit mining and installation of the largest rotary kiln in the United States furnacing mercury ore have made possible profitable exploitation of these reserves (fig. 1). The bulk of the exploration was by percussion drilling, although some diamond drilling was done to check the results. When enough reserves were indicated to assure a successful operation, stripping and plant construction were started simultaneously. Figure 2 is a general view of the plant. The ore bodies, although irregular in size, shape, and grade and covered by essentially barren cap rock, are amenable to low-cost, trackless, open-pit mining. Development consists of stripping the overburden and removing, barren cap rock. Ore is being mined at approximately [5],000 tons per month and treated in a 175-ton-per-day furnacing plant.

Recent advances in underground communications technology have demonstrated the feasibility of teleoperation and automation in underground metal mines. One major challenge lies in the automation of underground mobile machines from surface, with the potential to reduce significantly the need for human involvement in underground operations. This paper reviews the evolution of underground metal mining automation, principally related to the development of teleoperation and automation of mobile mining machines. Examples of prototype systems are given and the associated benefits that have been observed are reviewed.

In many multiple-sulphide ore flotation processes, it is desirable to concentrate each of the various valuable minerals into separate products. Although there are a variety of techniques and chemicals which can be employed to produce efficient separation, two basic types of flotation circuits are used: The Differential Flotation Circuit and the Bulk/Selective Flotation Circuit. Figure I depicts these two circuits in their most simplified form for the production of two concentrates and one tailing product. If three or more valuable minerals are present in an ore, a variety of combinations or extensions of these two basic flowsheets may be used. There are many examples of the successful application of both circuit types with ores containing similar minerals. Each ore must be tested individually to decide on which circuit is best. However, the following general statements can be made: 1) The differential circuit will have higher capital and operating costs than will the bulk/selective circuit due to higher rougher capacity requirement. 2) The differential circuit will achieve better separation than will the bulk/selective circuit since it is usually easier to reactivate a depressed mineral than it is to depress an already active mineral. If the deactivation problem with the bulk/selective circuit . . in can be overcome, there is a clear economic argument for its use

The flotation has been and is still the most widely used mineral concentration method. Because of its complexity, the flotation process required the development of robust control strategies which was facilitated by the introduction of on-line sensing instruments such as x-ray fluorescence (XRF) on stream analyzer (OSA), gamma density gauges and electromagnetic flowmeters. The interest in developing control strategies has persisted because the benefits to be gained in terms of improved metallurgical performance are substantial. As the flotation control becomes more and more difficult due to the emergence of low grade and complex ore cases, other control strategies have to be introduced. Froth based control is one of the emerging useful control strategy This paper will focus on the state of the art in the on-line froth characterization as obtained by numerical image analysis. The technology of machine vision provides a novel solution to several of the problems encountered in conventional flotation systems for monitoring and control, and constitutes a powerful tool for the investigation and interpretation of the effect of various flotation parameters as driven for the froth phases. This paper presents experimental design and development of a low-cost remote sensing hardware designed to support automated site data acquisition for near real-time progress reporting of construction operations. The developed hardware utilizes open source microcontroller equipped with multiple sensors that include 3D accelerometer, GPS, Data logger and Bluetooth. The use of open source microcontroller makes the developed design cost effective; freeing it from the need for costly license fees. Its platform configuration is flexible; enabling the addition of temperature, weight and other sensors, Wi-Fi and Xbee capabilities to suit individual field applications. Pilot tests have been carried out in laboratory and outdoor environments. The results prove effectiveness and robustness of the developed configuration. The paper provides description of the individual components used in the development of this prototype hardware. It also describes the technical characteristics, capabilities and limitations of the developed hardware. The findings of comparison with alternative technologies used for outdoor tracking of construction operations are presented. The comparison is carried out with respect to range, cost and suitability for outdoor environment. The developed hardware is expected to support a wide range of applications including tracking of earthmoving operations, highway construction and onsite resources. As well, it is expected to enhance safety on construction jobsites.

No other region of the world is enjoying the tremendous growth of power use that is currently being experienced in Asia. Fortunately for the coal industry — particularly in Asia — the power plants being planned or under construction are designed to use coal as fuel. This has produced a significant increase in the demand for steam coal that, in turn, has encouraged many in the industry to develop new coal mines. Indonesia is a country that has enjoyed substantial growth in coal production. This developing country has 195 million people who live on the nearly 13,000 islands. It has quickly emerged as the third-largest exporter of steam coal, following only Australia and South Africa. Almost all coal in Indonesia is mined by surface-mining methods.

Flotation tests are described on samples of two lowgrade nickeliferous ores of Oregon and Washington. The sample from the Congress mine, Ferry County, Wash., contained 1.2 percent Ni, occurring chiefly as millerite. The sample from the Shamrock mine, Jackson County, Oreg., contained 2.20 percent Ni and 0.78 percent Cu occurring chiefly as pentlandite, nickeliferous pyrrhotite, and chalcopyrite. The millerite in the Congress ore was concentrated by flotatioin with aulfydric collectors in a series of locked tests to recover 73 percent of the nickel as a 7 percent bulk concentrate. By successively regrinding and floating the bulk concentrate, it was further concentrated to 12.4 percent Ni at a recovery of 59 percent and 21.8 percent Ni at a recovery of 50 percent. Attempts at selective concentration of the copper-nickel Shamrock ore were only partly successful because of the intimate association of pentlandite and chalcopyrite. The nickel concentrate, which contained 86 percent of the nickel, had an analysis of 4.42 percent Ni and 1.03 percent Cu. The copper concentrate had an analysis of 18.8 percent Cu and 1.96 percent Ni and contained 48.5 percent of the copper. A bulk sulfide concentrate contained 92 percent of the copper and 01 per¬cent of the nickel and had an analysis of 4.17 percent Ni and 1.63 percent Cu.
