The material that composes the roof in coal mines differs in strength according to variations in its physical nature and characteristics. Some material such as limestone and massive sandstone, (free from slits) and carbonaceous shale or bone, will often remain in place in narrow work without the use of timber or other means of support, but in wide places the use of supports becomes a real necessity. Roof material composed of shale, fire clay or small laminations of sandstone, or shale or sandstone interspersed with laminations of thin coal, presents conditions that call for timber support in both narrow and wide work. However, in narrow work such unstable roof material may be taken down until the strata assume an arch that is self-supporting for overlying firm strata such as a roof coal, a touch weather-resisting, shale, sandstone, or limestone. The proper support of the roof in roadways used for haulage or travel adds to the economy of operation by preventing delays in transportation and increases the safety of those who travel these roadways.

In many mineral processing operations, the reported production figures for an accounting period may not make the best use of available data. While most of the mathematical approaches, such as check-in/check-out, mass balancing, used in effective metallurgical accounting strategies are well understood, the sources and magnitude of measurement errors generally are not. As part of the æAMIRA P754-Metal Accounting and ReconciliationÆ project, a study was undertaken at the Northparkes copper/gold concentrator near Parkes, New South Wales to examine the data used in their concentrator metallurgical accounting system. This paper summarises the results of a detailed examination of the mass measurement systems around the concentrator as well as the primary sampling system used for grade estimation. The goal of this work was to develop practical techniques to quantify the error (ie both accuracy and precision) of the measured metal accounting information. With this information, statistical confidence levels for this data can then be calculated. If the errors are small, the effect of error in each piece of measured data can then be propagated to other calculated production figures such as recovery and feed grade using a statistical technique called æthe propagation of errorÆ.

A surprisingly large mining-induced seismic event occurred in the LKAB Kiirunavaara Mine (Sweden) on 18 May, 2020 at 03:11 (local time). The estimated moment magnitude was 4.2. The event caused extensive damage in a large section of the mine. The production in the area is not yet resumed, even by the beginning of 2022 (~20 months after the event). The Kiirunavaara Mine has one of the world’s largest underground seismic systems with approximately 253 geophones. The in-mine records of the event showed a very complex character with a several sub-events. The event was also well recorded by seismic stations out to over 9,000 km distance. Data from the underground and regional seismic systems were analysed to define and compare basic source parameters such as hypocenter location, seismic moment, as well as the seismic moment tensor. The data from the in-mine seismic system was used to study the development of the seismic process and to define elementary seismic sub-sources together with the official hypocenter location.

Mechanically suitable grinding mills became available to the mining industry in 1908. Since then, mill operators have been searching for the best material and design with which to line the mills. These liner systems had to fulfill several criteria. Most important, they had to last long enough in an operating mill to protect its structure from the abrasive wear of the ore and the grinding media. In addition, they had to be capable of efficiently transferring the energy from the mill to the mill charge in order to facilitate the grinding process. And these liners had to be easy to install and remove. The first liners used were generally made of cast white iron, Hadfield manganese, unalloyed high-carbon steel and composites of steel and concrete or cemented in flint blocks or natural stone. In the early 1920s, pieces of solid rubber truck tires were used as emergency repairs for broken cast metal liners. Thus was rubber first introduced as a mill liner material. The first patent for rubber mill liners was awarded in 1921 to James Denny and Rolla Watson, both of the Coniagas Mine in Cobalt, Ontario, and to Dale Barnum of the Comstock Lode in Virginia City, NV. This original design was covered under US Patent No. 1470597. It had a fabric backed rubber that was bonded to the shell of the mill.

Many open pit mining operations seek to control blasting-related movement of ore and waste to minimise loss and dilution. Tracking the movement of ore boundaries can result in the maximisation of ore recovery and minimisation of waste sent to the mill, thereby optimising the economic performance of the operation.A novel solution for tracking the ore–waste boundary location before and after a blast uses subsurface markers placed along the boundary with all measurements and scans conducted remotely from the blast block. Upon system activation, user-operated equipment on the surface determines the three-dimensional (3D) location of the subsurface markers.The patented system concept combines two electromagnetic mechanisms, magnetic positioning and radio frequency through-rock communications to enable remote battery-powered markers, buried within the rock to be accurately located in 3D space.Field trials at a quarry have demonstrated the system can comfortably handle over 100 subsurface markers with a complete scan, including set-up, taking less than an hour. Location accuracy for each marker in 3D space is better than 0.5 m at a range up to 50 m from the magnetic source, and the system has an overall operational range in excess of 75 m.CITATION:Blay, K R, Spathis, A T and Leslie, K E, 2015. As fibras sintéticas vêm sendo gradualmente substituídas por fibras naturais. Em comparação com a fibra sintética, fibra natural demonstrou vantagens econômicas e ambientais. Visto que apresenta características interfaciais com matrizes poliméricas que favorecem a absorção de energia de alto impacto pela estrutura. No entanto, até agora pouco foi avaliado sobre a fibra de cânhamo incorporada em matrizes poliméricas. Este estudo tem o objetivo de avaliar a resistência ao impacto deste tipo de compósito com matriz de poliéster reforçada com diferentes porcentagens de fibras de cânhamo. A resistência ao impacto aumenta proporcionalmente com a quantidade relativa de fibras incorporadas como reforço na matriz polimérica. Este desempenho foi relacionado com a dificuldade de ruptura imposta pelas fibras, resultante da interação da matriz de fibra de cânhamo / poliéster de forma a ajudar a absorção da energia de impacto.

TheSouthern Alps in the South Island of New Zealand are currently rising rapidly as a consequence of continental collision along the Pacific-Australian plate boundary. Rapid uplift has resulted in a major thermal anomaly in the shallow crust beneath the alps. Alpine topography and associated intense precipitation, coupled with the thermal anomaly are responsible for vigorous combined topographic/convective circulation of water through the shallow crust.   Uplift is greatest in a wedge-shaped region between the Alpine Fault and an associated second-order backthrust system, the Main Divide Fault Zone, approximately 20 km to the east. The Main Divide Fault Zone is segmented into NNE and NE striking faults, which are regionally sub-parallel to the Alpine Fault, but dip northwest in the opposite direction. Reverse oblique-slip on the Main Divide Fault is in an easterly direction, with a greater component of strike-slip movement on the NE trending faults. Elevated topography in the Mt Cook region is related to thrusting of a relatively homoclinal sequence of semi-schistose rocks on top of lower-grade greywacke, which controls the position of the Main Divide. Tectonically induced fluid flow resulted in only minor alteration and hydrothermal mineralisation of fault-rocks in Alpine and Main Divide Faults, and localised deposition of quartz and/or carbonate in the immediate hangingwall.   The wedge between the Alpine and Main Divide Faults is segmented by third-order structures north of the Mount Cook region. A series of right-lateral (-085/700S) and left-lateral (-150/600SW) faults, which are synthetic and antithetic to the Alpine Fault, respectively, developed as a conjugate set during uplift. Fluid-flow in the Southern Alps is controlled by these third-order fault/fracture systems. Cu-Au mineralisation, hydrothermal veins, and surface hot spring activity are localised by third-order fault/fractures and appears to be enhanced where conjugates intersect.

Introduction At the Britannia Mining and Smelting Company's mill, the equivalent of 2,500 to 2,800 pounds of copper sulphate crystals per day is made from copper which is precipitated from the mine-water. This copper sulphate is used in the mill for the recovery of sphalerite by2 flotation. From 1932 until 1936 it was produced by exposing the precipitate to air for thirty days and then dissolving the oxidized copper with dilute sulphuric acid. In 1936, the flotation of sphalerite was discontinued and, when it was resumed in 1947, steps were taken to try to improve the former method. The present paper outlines the way in which this was done, and describes the plant and procedure by which copper sulphate is now being made, and by means of which an appreciable saving is being effected. Aboratory Tests The previous work had established that the precipitate, which consists mainly of metallic copper, must be oxidized before the copper would dissolve in dilute sulphuric acid. Various methods for oxidizing it were tried but in the early laboratory work the only suitable one found was to heat the precipitate to 600°C. and hold it at this temperature for two hours. When this was done, approximately 90 per cent of the copper became soluble in .acid. This percentage was considered satisfactory for practical purposes, but the cost of roasting was prohibitive because only a small amount of roasted precipitate was required each day.

"Extracting vanadium from vanadium containing hot metal into vanadium slag by BOF is the main vanadium production process in China. In this paper, the influence of Si content in hot metal on the quality of vanadium slag is analyzed. Synthetic vanadium slag with different SiO2 content were melted at 1673 K and then cooled to 303K at the cooling rate of 3?/min. Optical microscopy, SEM, EDS and XRD were used to analyze the mineralogical phases and crystallization behavior of vanadium slag. The results show that vanadium slag mainly contains spinel phase and silicate phase; V is enriched in the spinel phases while Si is concentrated in Fe2SiO4 CaFeSi2O6 and (Fe,Mn)2SiO4 as silicate phase. The melting point of slag increases gradually with the addition of SiO2; whereas viscosity decreases with an addition of 15~19% SiO2 and increases with an addition of 19~27% SiO2.IntroductionVanadium is an important element which is used almost exclusively in ferrous and non-ferrous alloys. The major vanadium products include FeV, V2O5, V2O3, VN and Al-V-Ti alloy. Furthermore, vanadium slags are mostly produced by oxidizing the elements in V-containing hot metal during a duplex refining process. Therefore, the process of removing vanadium from hot metal has its significance on the subsequent process[1].The extraction of vanadium is greatly affected by the mineralogical composition of vanadium slag[2], the distribution of the elements between the spinel and silicate phases and its physic-chemical properties. These characteristics of vanadium slag have been studied in some details. It has been reported that Si mainly exists mainly in the form of silicate which wraps the spinel crystals while small amount of Si stands as phosphorus quartz or diopside[2]. Chen et al.[3, 4] points out, when SiO2 content in vanadium slag increased every 1%, V2O5 decreased 1.48%. Moreover, silicate phases would embarrass the oxidation of V-containing spinels through decreasing the exposing probability[5]. Meanwhile, melting point and viscosity of vanadium slag has been greatly influenced by the SiO2 content. Therefore, this work attempts to analyze the above-mentioned questions systematically."

Barrick Gold Corporation is the gold industry leader, with 25 operating mines and a pipeline of large, long-life projects located across five continents, in addition to large land positions on some of the most prolific mineral districts. Barrick's high level of commitment to sustainable economic development and environmental stewardship was recognized by Dow Jones Sustainability Index (DJSI) - World, for the third consecutive year in 2010. The potential for adverse environmental effects from acid rock drainage (ARD) and metals leaching (ML) and their financial implications for Barrick are key considerations in our environmental assessment and business development processes. Barrick's membership in the International Network for Acid Prevention (INAP) reflects the importance of these issues to our business. INAP's development of the Global Acid Rock Drainage (GARD) Guide (a best practices guide for acid rock drainage prevention) provides Barrick with an important tool to assist in the assessment of environmental and financial risks from ARD and ML associated with our planned and ongoing mining operations (INAP, 2009). In this paper we will discuss how Barrick incorporates the GARDGuide and its principles for ARD and ML prediction and prevention in our business development processes and the management of our operations. The GARDGuide serves as a key reference for our project environmental assessments and as a common link between our projects and operations management, consulting specialists, permitting and regulatory authorities and the public. We will discuss how the GARDGuide is being "syndicated" throughout Barrick as a standard of practice and present a case study of how it was used in a recent Barrick Business Development Project.

"The International Cyanide Management Code (the Code) is a voluntary industry program for gold miners and associated cyanide transporters and cyanide producers. By becoming a signatory, a company commits to follow the CodeÆs principles and implement its standards of practice.Signatories are required to undergo an initial certification audit within three years and a recertification audit every subsequent three years. Recertification audits evaluate compliance over the preceding three-year period. This approach presents a number of challenges. Golder Associates has undertaken in excess of 75 initial certification audits and 25 recertification audits; more than any other audit firm. This paper outlines some of the challenges identified and lessons learnt from the recertification audit process. Central to the process is the challenge for organisations to maintain commitment to compliance over the full three-year period and effectively address deficiencies or non-conformances that may have occurred during that period in a prompt manner.The International Cyanide Management Institute (ICMI) provides guidance in evaluating deficiencies or non-conformances, which requires consideration of the æcauseÆ, ædurationÆ and æongoing compliance effortsÆ and an assessment of the concept of ægood faithÆ in response actions. Golder AssociatesÆ experience with the recertification process highlights some common deficiencies with Code compliance programs, such as: system breakdowns (leading to ineffective communication between departments or loss of information) exceedance of discharge limits inadequate inspections, maintenance activities and associated record-keeping.Such deficiencies can be attributed to: personnel changes organisational changes or structures management systems (eg integrated or standalone) awareness and interpretation of Code requirements transparency of management decisions with Code implications.We have identified that ongoing programed assessment is an effective strategy in maintaining Code compliance.CITATION:Beazley, R J and Woods, M C, 2013. Of the many organic impurities present in Bayer liquor, sodium oxalate is known to have one of the most detrimental effects on the Bayer process. Because of its limited solubility, it will co-precipitate with gibbsite during the precipitation stage which results in many operational challenges for the refinery. Despite the importance of this phenomenon, the interaction mechanism between gibbsite and sodium oxalate is not well understood. In this study, the growth of sodium oxalate on three main morphologies (random agglomerates, prims and hexagons) of water-washed and caustic-washed gibbsite was observed under synthetic Bayer conditions using in situ optical microscopy. After a short induction period, oxalate started to nucleate on gibbsite crystals, and grew with a needle-shaped morphology which eventually developed into oxalate bundles. In addition, the results indicated that caustic washing was able to partly decompose gibbsite crystals and thus make the gibbsite surface rougher, which provides more potential sites for oxalate nucleation and growth. The growth rate of oxalate crystals on the basal (001) face of water-washed gibbsite was 1.33 µm/min determined by the time-lapse imaging of in situ optical microscope.

The Bureau of Mines estimated reclamation costs for 13 surface coal mines in nine States west of the Missisisppi River. With the exception of the Pacific Coast coal province, at least one mine in each of the western coal provinces was studied. Cost estimates were, made using standard estimating procedures from data obtained from company records, interviews with industry personnel, and onsite observations. Estimated costs are presented in four categories which represent the four phases of mined-land reclamation: (1) Design, engineering, and overhead; (2) bond and permit fees; (3) backfilling and grading; and (4) revegetation. Estimated costs as of the first quarter of 1976 are expressed as averages and ranges in terms of per acre, per ton of coal produced, and per million Btu. Total reclamation costs ranged from $860 to $7,200 per acre, from 6 to 84 cents per ton, and from 4 to 35.3 mills per million Btu. A mine in the Northern Great Plains coal province (Region D) showed the highest per acre cost whereas mines in part of the western region of the Interior coal province (Region A) experienced the greatest per ton and per million Btu cost. The high cost of reclamation in the Western United States is reflected in the backfill in and grading category, particularly in the cost of topsoil removal and subsequent replacement as required by individual State reclamation regulations.

2013 has seen metals, industrial minerals, and coal all reduce in price due to market and geo-political factors. Many companies are taking write-downs to recalibrate their reserves and have enacted focused cost reduction programs. The public domain includes statements where companies have operating cost reduction goals in the $500 million range. Zero-base staffing & budget analysis is a means to achieve optimal employment and cost levels for a given level of production. The method involves measuring the work to be done similar to Lean. Lean is a method to review each step of production and remove anything that doesn?t add value or is necessary to complete finished goods. Zero-base methodology has been applied to mines worldwide producing realistic and sustainable levels of staffing and costs based on the quantity of work. The objective of this paper is to provide the framework of zero-basing with examples of application.

Dynamics of collision and kinetics of the bubble attachment to hydrophobic solid plates (Teflon) of different surface roughness were investigated. The experiments were carried out in such a way that probability of the collision and probability that the detachment will not occur were equal always 100%. Thus, it was possible to determine effect of the surface roughness on the bubble attachment (three phase contact formation, TPC) only. A high-speed camera (1182 Hz) was used to record the velocity variations, bouncing and time of attachment of the bubble colliding with Teflon plates having different surface roughness (5 different plates). Roughness of the plate surfaces was modified in a mechanical way using different abrasive papers. It was found that the roughness had a crucial influence on the time-scale of the TPC formation and attachment of the bubble colliding with the Teflon plates. Despite high hydrophobicity of all plates (contact angles 1100 -115º) it was observed that at the smoothest surfaces (called "Teflon I" and "Teflon II" and having surface roughness below 1 um) there was no attachment during the bubble first collisions. Prior to the attachment four or more "approach?bouncing" cycles of the colliding bubble were observed there and simultaneously the bubble shape varied rapidly within time intervals below 0.85 ms. Time of contact of the colliding bubble with the Teflon plates was very short; 2-3 ms. These results indicate that during that short time of the collision the liquid layer separating the colliding bubble and the solid surface did not reach a critical thickness of its rupture.

"Previous studies described by Galvin et al. (2017) have shown that for Australian bituminous coal fines, both in batch and in continuous process, the new improved oil agglomeration procedure based on the use of high-internal-phase (HIP) emulsions, as compared to the conventional “pure oil” agglomeration process, enables a significant reduction in the amount of oil while reaching a high yield of clean coal (approximately 90% of agglomerates greater than 355 µm in size) in a significantly shorter time. The HIP emulsion used in these experiments comprised up to 95% vol. aqueous solution of sodium chloride (3% wt. concentration) and for the rest, a mixture of kerosene (oil) and sorbitan monooleate (SMO emulsifier) in a 1:1 ratio as a binder. This study evaluates the applicability of the new HIP-oil agglomeration process to treat Canadian bituminous ultra-fine coal and Russian sub-bituminous coal fines and compares results from agglomeration to the flotation response of both coals. Oil agglomeration is known to be sensitive to surface properties of coal. Since surface properties of coals depend not only on the rank of coal but also on their origin (depositional environment) and mineralogical composition, both the applicability of this new improved agglomeration process to the non-Australian coals and its efficiency became the motivation for this study. To evaluate the applicability of the new process to both Canadian bituminous and Russian sub-bituminous coals, a series of bench-scale tests were carried out under conditions similar to those described by van Netten et al. (2016) for the Australian coals. Based on the results obtained in this research, new boundary conditions for the application of the HIP emulsion-based oil agglomeration process have been outlined and conclusions on the viability of the new process to treat ultra-fine coal from Western Canada and Russian sub-bituminous coal fines have been reached.INTRODUCTION In most cases, to meet the market requirements, the mined coal has to be processed to reduce the ash content by the removal of mineral matter and thus to increase the quality of the coal products (van Netten et al., 2016). Generally, flotation is used for processing fines from high rank coals; however, there are high losses of very fine coal due to the inefficiency of this process. Furthermore, difficulty in dewatering the fine coal results in excessive moisture levels causing coal handleability issues, which increases costs in the coal-cleaning industry (Capes & Darcovich, 1984). Much of the development that has occurred in fine coal cleaning has taken place with higher-value coal, often metallurgical (Klima et al., 2012). If the fine coal is deemed to be too difficult or expensive to process, it may be discarded as waste (van Netten et al, 2014). Such disposal not only creates an environmental liability but may also result in the loss of a valuable, high quality product that is better liberated than the coarser fractions of coal."

The paper will demonstrate how automated fragmentation photo analysis is being used at the Lafarge North America, Ravena NY quarry as part of an ongoing drill, blast and primary crushing continuous improvement process. Using on-line fragmentation photo analysis systems at both the primary crusher feed point and crusher discharge belt, data is collected to: benchmark the drill/blast process; monitor the work being done by the primary crusher; measure gradation changes in the crusher feed resulting from changes in drill/blast and measure the subsequent changes in further size reduction done by the primary crusher.
