THE ball mill has superseded stamps for the reduction of gold ores in most of the recently designed plants, partly because stamps are not suited to die fine grinding required for flotation, and partly to save space and construction cost. Experience with these new mills seems to confirm the idea that it is more difficult to recover bold from a ball-mill product than it is when stamps are used for crushing. Microscopical examination of particles of gold that have passed through a ball mill show that the gold has been pounded into exceedingly thin flakes coated with a talcy surface, making it more difficult to save by amalgamation, flotation, or concentrating. Bearing in mind that gold is extremely malleable, it seems reasonable that this should be so. Contrast the action in a stamp battery, where the crushing is by impact in the presence of mercury, to the grinding and rolling under pressure in a ball mill. It is well known that a better recovery can be obtained by panning or amalgamation from a sample of ore that has been crushed by mortar and pestle than from one reduced on a bucking board.

This report is a continuation and expansion of a previous USBM grant (No. G0254004) which examined alternative methods of handling the parting between two coal seams in a surface mining operation. The alternative methods consist of equipment implementation in either a stowing or haulback technique. Following a typical strip mine conformation, the parting is directly stowed or hauled back and placed in the pit bottom after second seam removal. The objectives are to produce an environmentally sound material placement technique and to increase prime stripping machine utilization. This report contains the engineering philosophy behind two computer programs created to evaluate parting handling methods over d wide range of coal and parting thickness ratios. The nature of the computer approach allows cost sensitivity analysis and quick updating of costs. The two programs are clearly presented with documentation and examples such that consumers may apply then to their own operations.

This final report delineates the findings of the test programs, simulations, and analyses performed to determine the requirements for the effective application of berms and guardrails as truck restraint systems for elevated mine roadways. Included arts criterion for effective vehicle restraint for guardrail applications and recommendations for berm applications based on scale model tests and computer simulations. Full scale haulage vehicle-berm interaction field tests were performed to correlate the results of these model tests and computer simulations. Recommendations for the construction of berms were made on the basis of tests of berm bearing strength, response of the vehicle to different berms, and predictions based on the obtained correlation

Ground control research for underground coal mining has progressed significantly over the past several decades. With this progression, and the ability to analyze and model underground conditions, underground working conditions have significantly improved. In order to progress further, the behavior of roof support must be known and be adequately modeled, such that models can be used for support design under different geological and mining conditions. This paper discusses the results from a research project funded by the U.S. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) and undertaken by Southern Illinois University Carbondale and Peabody Energy. The research involved installation of active and passive instrumented bolts in mines, recording relevant in situ data and then attempting to model the behavior of the bolts as mining progressed. Such calibrated models could aid in design of roof supports under different geological and mining layouts and thus, hopefully, further improve rock related safety.

Phase I of U.S. Bureau of Mines contract H01220S3, "Improved Sensors and Fire Control Systems for Mining Equipment, II was an investigative effort involving study of the fire problem and preliminary design of a fire protection system. Overall contract objectives included three basic efforts: * Identify problems * Develop a design * Demonstrate a system The first two efforts were conducted during the period June through November, 1972. Phase II will involve testing of system components; construction and testing of a mockup; and demonstration of the system on a truck to prove its effectiveness under actual operational and environmental conditions.

IN OFFERING a few comments and suggestions on trends in mining practice, and the methods and tools of tomorrow's mining, perhaps it will be appropriate to start with the subject of education. Charles Kettering, one of the best-known scientists and experimentalists in the automotive industry once said, in effect, that tech- 111ca1 schools have to be carefid not to teach a lot of hard and fast rules that may have been true once, but aren't so any more, or won't be presently. Possibly the mining school of the future will concern itself less with what has happened and more with what is going to happen. It will be built about or around problems. Such a school will be judged, not by the number of its students but by the quality of its improvements. To such a school the industry will send for men to solve particular problems. The industry will doubtless at some time sup- port such a school financially though a lot of hard work will be required to organize miners to undertake such financing, primarily because the mining industry, other than that concerned with iron and steel, is too loosely knit. Each company tends to its own knitting too closely for its own good. Wouldn't it be splendid if the mining industry would finance a "problem school" as suggested by Mr. Kettering and others.

Attempt was taken in this study to explore the misplacement phenomena in binary mixture in solid-liquid fluidisation system. The binary mixtures of hematite and quartz particles at different sizes were taken. The closed size range particles were taken to minimize the size and shape effect in fluidization. As both the minerals have appreciable density difference, the separation of both minerals with closed size range has an advantage. The experiments were conducted in different permutation and combination of different sizes of binary mixture to observe the fluidization phenomena. The samples were taken at different heights in fluidized zones and analyzed the distribution of particles of both minerals. The fluidization characteristics were evaluated with respect to operating and design parameters. It has been observed that when the terminal velocity of quartz and hematite particles is same or near to each other, then misplacement is significant. In general, the segregation index value is near to one, complete segregation takes place whereas this value is near to zero, complete mixing takes place. The experimental data were used to find out the segregation index for different size ratios of quartz and hematite particles and the values are within 0-1. When the size ratio is 1 or less, complete segregation takes place whereas this ratio is within 1.0-1.4, partial mixing takes place. Similarly, when the size ratio is within 1.4-2.0, complete mixing takes place whereas this ratio is within 2.0-4.6, then it moves towards complete segregation in inversion manner. Improved roof control in high deformation tailgate environments has been achieved over the last decade through development of stiffer and increased capacity standing support products. æThe CanÆ is one such development, being a steel cylinder containing a weak cementitious fill, designed to essentially fold in upon itself whilst maintaining strength. A laboratory study to better define the relative load contributions of the steel cylinder and fill, the confining interaction between these components and most importantly, the potential impact of varying the steel and/or fill properties is described. This would enable the support engineer to ædial-upÆ the desired strength and stiffness properties and optimise the standing support design with respect to load capacity, stiffness, weight (handling) and cost. Design curves to optimise strength based on steel casing thickness, fill strength (confined and unconfined) and æCanÆ geometry were established. Scaled-down (one-third) samples were used in the test program and found to adequately reflect the loading behaviour of full-scale versions, thereby providing significantly greater scope for further product development at less expense compared with testing full-scale products.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines, the University of Arizona, Sandia National Laboratories, and Zonge Engineering and Research Organization, Inc., conducted cooperative field tests of six electromagnetic (EM) geophysical methods to compare their effectiveness in locating a brine solution simulating in situ leach solution or a high-conductivity plume of contamination. The brine was approximately 160 m below the surface. The testsite was the University's San Xavier experimental mine near Tucson, AZ. Geo- physical surveys using surface and surface-borehole, time-domain electromagnetic (TEM) induction; surface controlled-source audiofrequency magnetotellurics (CSAMT); surface-borehole, frequency- domain electromagnetic (FEM) induction; crosshole FEM; and surface magnetic field ellipticity were conducted before and during brine injection. The surface TEM data showed a broad decrease in resistivity. CSAMT measurements with the conventional orientation did not detect the brine, but measurements with another orientation indicated some decrease in resistivity. The surface-borehole and crosshole methods located a known fracture and other fracture zones inferred from borehole induction logs. Surface magnetic field ellipticity data showed a broad decrease in resistivity at depth following brine injection.

Three transportation systems in surface coal mines: 1-Truck Haulage, 2-Belt Conveying, and 3-Coarse-Coal Slurry Transportation are compared from the operations and cost point of Views. Computerized design and cost models were developed and cost data banks were compiled for each system. These models can be used to evaluate transportation systems and layouts that are practiced in most of the U.S. surface coal mines. A typical midwestern area strip mine was considered for illustration purposes. Sensitivity analysis on critical parameters such as production rate, transportation, distance, etc. was conducted and the outcomes are presented.

"Synthetic Aperature Sonar (SAS) is a powerful tool for ultra-high resolution marine survey. The Kongsberg HiSAS system deployed on the HUGIN AUV has a rangeindependent resolution of 3x3 cm for sonar image and ~10x10cm for the interferometric bathymetry product [1]. This resolution is achievable for areas up to 50 km2 on a single survey mission providing huge multi-attribute datasets. This technology, originally designed for military and oil-industry applications, has the potential to revolutionize scientific seafloor mapping. The extreme resolution of this technique allows for deposit mapping in and around seafloor hydrothermal systems, including the discovery of extinct venting structures. By clearly distinguishing between volcanic and hydrothermal landscapes based on features below the resolution of conventional multibeam systems, SAS enables an entirely new level of hydrothermal deposit survey. Additionally due to the extreme resolution of this survey technology, repeat survey and change detection should allow centimeter-scale changes in deposit morphology to be routinely detected over an entire hydrothermally venting region. In collaboration with the EU funded MIDAS project, the Centre for Geobiology at the University of Bergen will deploy the HUGIN AUV this summer at two distinct shallow venting systems on the Arctic Mid-Ocean Ridge system. The AUV will collect repeat bathymetry at the Jan Mayen Vent Field, and extend the SAS coverage to include newly discovered venting sites. We will present the preliminary findings of this expedition, including the first deposit estimations made from full-resolution SAS mosaics."

The Canadian steel industry is now in many ways a mature one, having achieved many technical successes during its hundred-year history. It is interesting to look back over this period, to learn something of the histories of the different producers and of the people and forces that shaped their development. The following article provides a thumbnail sketch of the Canadian steel industry as it exists today. It is intended for the general reader, not for the specialist who will want to consult the several books and theses written on the development of the industry during the last hundred years. The famous Les Forges du Saint-Maurice, an important iron producer for a century and a half, provides a natural historical starting point for a look at the four major players - Dosco, Algoma, Stelco and Dofasco - who have provided most of the hundreds of millions of tonnes of steel, in every form from horseshoes to tinplate, needed in the twentieth century. The smaller companies which have sprung up in the last 20 or 30 years are dealt with briefly - but only because their history is so recent. Not so long ago the mini-mill, based on scrap rather than on the blast furnace, was thought to be specially suited to the economies of the smaller developing countries of the Third World. However, recent history has made it evident that the small plant, specializing in a few basic products (e.g. reinforcing bar) or taking advantage of special circumstances, can successfully compete with the large blast furnace/primary steel producers.

DURING the war, the Navy undertook the construction, under my direction, of an experimental gun embodying features designed to lessen the cost and time of production. These experiments were initiated after representations as to their, desirability had been offered by myself, by the Naval Consulting Board, and by the National Research Council. The first drawings were made in June, 1917, and the experiment was completed in November, 1918. For the sake of clearness it will pay to recapitulate briefly the fundamental idea of gun construction. It is well known that if a hollow cylinder is subjected to internal fluid pressure, the maximum stress occurs in the inside layers, the outer parts carrying much less than their due share of the stress. This inequality of stress is more pronounced the thicker the walls of the cylinder. If such a cylinder is pushed to the elastic limit, failure in elasticity will take place long before the outer layers have reached the limit of their capacity. Economical use of the material would demand, however, that all parts of the cylinder reach the limits of their capacity simultaneously. This may be brought about, at least in cylinders of not too great thickness, by producing in. the inner layers an initial compression, and in the outer layers an initial tension. The effect of internal pressure is at, first to relieve the compression of the inside layers, while increasing the tension of the outside layers. If the initial stresses are properly distributed, all parts of the cylinder will reach their elastic limits simultaneously, thus giving a cylinder of maximum strength for its weight. In gun construction as hitherto practiced, this initial distribution of stress is produced either by winding the inner tube with wire, a common English practice, or by shrinking hoops over the inner tube, which has been the standard American practice. Following the gold discoveries of the late 1800's much was written regarding the vast mineral resources of Alaska, and much interest was aroused, and yet over the years little has been done to exploit those resources. Between 1906 and 1935 the Kennecott copper mines of the Copper River region were the keystone of the mineral economy (fig, 1). After the depletion of the Kennecott ore reserves and aided by the statutory rise in the price of gold, the yellow metal became the major mineral commodity. In recent years it has shared the honors with coal and sand and gravel. Although this trend should indicate the development of a stable, diversified mineral industry, yet the trend of production is downward. This report results from a study by the Federal Bureau of Mines to delineate the problems and to forecast the growth of the mineral industries in Alaska. The need for such a blueprint for the future was enhanced by the population explosion in the United States and the consequent eventual need for additional living space, as well as the current interest in new areas, and the necessity to develop reserves of strategic minerals.

"The corrosion of support bolts in underground mines has become an increasingly prevalent issue over the past two decades. With an increase of premature failures due to Stress Corrosion Cracking (SCC), it is evident that understanding the environmental factor influencing the cable bolt corrosion is critical for maintaining effective ground support hence the safety and productivity of underground spaces. Experimental testing of rock and cable bolts were accomplished in a variety of packings, including saturated clay, saturated coal, mine water and grout/cement to investigate their corrosion behaviours. Water samples were obtained and analysed for pH and electrical conductivity (EC) during the experiment. After a period of 76 days the bolts were retrieved and analysed visually. Primary factors were found to be the presence of geological materials and the aeration of the bolts, i.e. the vicinity to air and air flow, while secondary factors were observed to be pH levels and EC. It was also found that the coal/clay interfaces and the water/grout/cement interfaces are non-relevant to corrosion of rockbolts and cable bolts. The proposed framework can be applied to other reinforcement materials used in underground spaces for improved understanding of corrosion environment.INTRODUCTION Rock bolts and cable bolts are the major reinforcement elements used in mining industry to improve the rockmass properties for safe and productive mining. They are normally used to pin large beams or blocks of rock in underground mines to stabilise the rockmass in the roof (strata) against collapse. The rockbolts are typically low cost hot rolled rebar while cable bolts are composed of strands of wire, normally wound together around a central king wire (Hyett and Bawden, 1993; Vandermaat, 2014). The typical length of the bolts in underground mines is 2.4 m and 4–12 m for rockbolts and cable bolts, respectively (Vandermaat, 2014; Windsor and Thompson, 1997). Cable bolts are much more flexible and usually offer a much higher load capacity than rigid rockbolts. Their increased length and flexibility allows cable bolts longer than the height of a roadway to be used in underground mines."

Regulatory processes associated with development of major mining operations in Alaska and British columbia were evaluated using specific case studies. Included were one hard rock mine in Alaska (Red Dog Mine), one hard rock mine In British Columbia (Snip Mine), and one offshore gold dredging project in Alaska (WestGold SIMA). Based on a comparison of the three case studies, it became clear that the primary incentives for cost effective permitting are: 1) early and continuing coordination of proposed project plans, designs and schedules with key regulatory agencies and local area residents and 2) development of a sufficient level of baseline information on air quality, water quality, wetlands, endangered species, fish and wildlife, and socia-cultural conditions to support the required permit application. The U.S. permitting process worked in much the same way as the Canadian permitting process. Disincentives of mine permitting include high initial costs for baseline data gathering. However, a relatively high early investment resulted in more efficient permit acquisition and reduced long-term monitoring requirements. A common problem Identified was the inadequate supply of trained agency personnel with the requisite technical and permitting experience. This sometimes resulted in poor decisions and unnecessary changes in project plans and schedules.

Research workers from the Bureau of Mines and industry met with other government and industry representatives at the Mont Chateau Lodge, Morgantown, W. Va., on May 30-31, 1973, to discuss the current status of methane control in eastern U.S. coal mines. The opening remarks, the eight technical presentations, and the discussions of the members of a government-industry panel are published here for the benefit of those concerned with the control of methane in coal mines. In addition, an introduction has been added to present the background of work in this field.
