Open pit anthracite mining at the Canmore Creek Mines, Canmore, Alberta, south of Banff National Park, resulted in several pit lakes by the early 1970’s. To enable future mining opportunities in the Rocky Mountains, operators decided to reclaim the site into a non-polluting landscape which would provide a memorable outdoor experience for residents and visitors alike, and would preserve wildlife habitat. Reclamation began with the stabilization and revegetation of spoil piles adjacent to Canmore Creek, and the backfilling and revegetation of Canmore Creek Mines No. 1 and 2 to create “Salamander Pond.” The company dammed the outlet of an open pit at Canmore Creek Mine No. 3 to raise the water level and create Quarry Lake. Reclamation concluded in 1980 when the Town of Canmore took ownership. Quarry Lake is now the centerpiece of 293-acre Quarry Lake Heritage Park, a popular destination for swimming, hiking, and fishing, visited by about 400 people on summer days. The Alberta Environment Conservation Authority described this as “The best mine reclamation in Western Canada.” Quarry Lake is an exceptional example of walk-away, pit lake closure, where the mining company created a valued post-mining asset and was released from future liabilities. INTRODUCTION One of the most important environmental issues associated with contemporary open pit mining is the closure of mine pit lakes, and the perpetual legacy these lakes can potentially generate. Ideally, successful pit lake closure includes the following: (i) the water quality within the pit lake, plus surface water and groundwater discharging from the pit lake, meets pre-mining, or other acceptable water quality conditions of the receiving environment, (ii) the termination of all active treatment processes, (iii) the return of the pit lake to the government for long-term care and maintenance, (iv) the release of the mining company from all future liabilities associated with the pit lake, (v) the return the environmental bond to the mining company, and (vi) the reuse of the pit lake for some post-closure, beneficial purpose. The achievement of these goals is known as “walk away, pit lake closure.” Peer-reviewed, publications of successful walk away, pit lake closure provide mining companies the ability to address public concerns regarding the safety of pit lakes which commonly occur during the permitting, operations, and closure phases of mining. To date, most published work on walk away, pit lake closure work has occurred in the coal mining sector in Germany and Australia (McCullough et al., 2009; Jones and McCullough, 2011; Kumar et al., 2013; Schultz et al., 2013). However, in North America, examples of walk away, pit lake closure are not widely discussed in the literature despite there being excellent examples from the coal mining sector in Alberta, Canada (e.g. Pleasure Island, Black Diamond, East Pit, Sphynx, Robb, Lovette, Siltstone, and Sterling), and from the iron mining sector in Minnesota in the United States (e.g. Portsmouth Lake, see MNDNR, 2018). Although seldom included in discussions of pit lakes from the metal and coal mining sectors, the aggregate and fabricated-stone mining sectors also produce pit lakes, and there are numerous examples throughout North America where these pit lakes have been successfully closed and transformed into post-mining resources. The difficulty of finding these good examples in the literature makes it challenging for companies to respond to public and regulatory questions regarding pit lake closure and reuse. As such, there is a pressing need document the motivations and approaches used in examples of successful, walk away, pit lake closure in North America so that the mining industry at large can learn from these examples and can better address public concerns.

The Archaeozoic Willyama Complex at Broken Hill has suffered several periods of deformation and metamorphism. New structural and petrological information together with that available from the literature gives a picture of the metamorphic evolution of the Barrier Ranges. Several epochs of metamorphism are recognized, and potassium-argon dating of minerals has been applied with limited success to the resolution of these epochs.INTRODUCTIONAdvancements in the mineral industry at Broken Hill over the past eighty years have been accompanied by a continual striving towards increased understanding of both the geological history of the Barrier Ranges and the environment of the Broken Hill ore deposits. However, although many detailed studies of selected localities and particular-aspects of Broken Hill geology have been carried out recently, the regional geology of the Barrier Ranges as a whole has received little attention from a petrological viewpoint since the pioneer investigations of Mawson (1912) and Browne (1922). There still remains a great need for regional surveys combining field studies of the habits, structures and outcrop relationships of the various rock types with laboratory investigations of their chemistry, mineralogy and microscopic ,fabrics. Recording observations arising from three brief visits to the Broken Hill area during 1959 and 1963 may stimulate further surveys.During one of these visits, the generosity of the Zinc Corporation Limited in providing field transport and geological guidance enabled the writer to collect material and study field relationships and appearance of the various rock types at numerous localities covering most of the Willyama outcrop. With construction underway on the 22.5 km (14 mile) Initial Segment of the Link Light Rail transit system in Seattle (including the one-mile EPB-driven running tunnels and mined station at Beacon Hill), the Sound Transit Board on May 20, 2004 voted on selection of a preferred route for an approximately eight-mile extension northwards from the central business district to Northgate, and authorized immediate start of advanced conceptual/preliminary engineering and geotechnical exploration programs scheduled to be completed in Spring 2005. The extension includes approximately914 m (30,000) route-feet of bored running tunnels, a mined station with platform level approximately 60 m (200 ft) below grade, three (possibly four) cut-and-cover stations and a cut-and-cover cross-over structure, as well as an aerial terminal station at Northgate and other line-section below-grade and aerial structures. All tunneling will be in glacial soils.

"The combination of a predictive reliability assessment model and discrete-event simulation can be an effective methodology to study the impact of equipment failures on the capacity of production systems in mines. In our case, a predictive reliability assessment model using genetic algorithms is combined with a discrete-event simulation model to analyze mine equipment systems.Discrete-event simulation involves modelling of real-life systems based on variables and events that occur or change at distinct points in time. The Simul8 simulation software, by Visual Thinking, is used in this research. It is a two-dimensional (2D), discrete-event simulation/ animation software tool for creating realistic depictions of manufacturing and materials handling systems.The simulation model developed for the purpose of this research represents a typical two-level, sub-level stoping section of an underground mine in the Sudbury region in Ontario, Canada. This 2D model was created to assess the impact of equipment failures to a mine’s production throughput. In more detail, using mean time between failures (MTBF) data of scooptrams derived from a reliability assessment model based on genetic algorithms, LHD failures are incorporated into the simulation model. These failures cause production interruptions to the development cycle and consequently loss of hauling capacity.Another purpose of this research work is to demonstrate how low-cost simulation tools such as Simul8 can be successfully applied to model underground hard rock mining operations. The research discussed in this paper is carried out by the Laurentian University Mining Automation Laboratory (LUMAL)."

In the present work, a reduction roasting experimental study of Greek nickeliferous laterite samples with a gaseous reducing mixture ? CO:N2- is presented. The effect of parameters such as temperature, ore grain size, and composition of the reducing mixture were examined. It is deduced that the reducibility of intermediate type laterite sample, where iron appears mainly in the form of goethite (a-FeOOH), is considerably higher than that of limonitic type laterite samples, where hematite (a-Fe2O3) is the predominant iron mineral phase. The degree of reduction of the limonitic type laterite samples does not exceed 50%, while it reaches 95% in the case of the intermediate-type laterite sample under the same experimental conditions. Increasing the temperature in the range 750-900°C does not considerably favor the reduction of the limonitic type laterites, whereas decrease of ore grain size of the limonitic-type ore samples and more intense reducing conditions increase the reduction. The considerably higher specific surface area values of the intermediate laterite samples, diminishes the effect of the ore grain size and this can be regarded as the critical parameter leading to the higher reducibility of this ore.

Most people involved in the mining industry are familiar with student-industry co-op work-study programs. Many colleges and universities have used them for years. Northern College’s Haileybury School of Mines student co-op program adds a new dimension of productivity to the college and the mining industry. The college is located in Hailey-bury, Ontario, Canada. An example of the program’s success is the school’s relationship with Sabin Metal’s SMC (Canada) Ltd.’s McAlpine Mill in Cobalt, Ontario. Students gain practical knowledge and experience while industry gains an eager-to-learn worker. And many of the college’s advanced research services are made available to industry to supplement their own capabilities. The McAlpine Mill was established to provide custom milling of slags and ores. It also recovers metal values from other products of the primary and secondary precious metal industries.

The number of persons fatally injured in the California petroleum industry in 1932 was 24, a decrease of 6, or 20 percent from the number killed in 1931. The decrease in the number of fatalities occurring in 1932 caused the fatality curve of the California petroleum industry to reach its lowest point in 10 years. Changing conditions in the oil industry - reduced personnel, decreased active field development, and curtailed production - have undoubtedly caused a part of this decrease, but continued accident-prevention efforts by the industry have also contributed to the reduction in the number of fatalities for 1932. The Bureau of Mines has analyzed and reported annually the fatalities in the California petroleum industry for a period of 10 years. Figure 1 shows the trend of fatal accidents during that period. Fatality statistics for 1932 show that the drilling and producing, pipe line and transportation, and refining and natural gasoline divisions of the industry had fewer accidents in 1932 than in 1931, sales and marketing being the only division that showed an increase over 1931. The number of fatalities by divisions for 1931 and 1932, percent of total, and percentages of increase and decrease are given in Table 1.

It is always necessary to expand existing buildings, so that they could meet the growing societal needs. Compared with demolishing them and then constructing new ones, the expansion of existing buildings could not only reduce project cost, but also save the use of energy and raw materials in projects. Therefore, it is widely adopted in most under-developed countries. However, the expansion of existing buildings is not an easy task. It has been involved with a lot of issues in defining the scope of work, planning landscape, managing construction activities, etc. This paper investigates the potential challenges in expanding existing buildings. The project of expanding the Al-Agoza Hospital, one of the biggest and oldest hospitals in Cairo, Egypt, is selected as a case study. In the case study, the project documents have been carefully reviewed. The project engineers and the health-care professionals working in the hospital have been interviewed. This way, the point of views from the owner, the architect/engineer, and the contractor have been taken into account. Several lessons are learned through the discussion with these people. The results from this paper are expected to provide pieces of useful advice and suggestion for the expansion of existing buildings in the future.

Due to their high amount of stored energy, explosives have been the cause of many serious injuries and fatalities over the last centuries. Despite safety advances and awareness in the last decades, injuries and fatalities continue to occur at mining operations due to blasting. According to the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health, from 1978 to 2001, blasting incidents claimed 106 lives and were responsible for over 1000 injuries in mines in the US. The main causes of incidents found today are flyrock, blast area security and premature detonations. The concerted efforts of the mining and explosives industries and labour and government agencies have greatly improved the safety record of blasting in mines.

"INTRODUCTION The so called Porto Maravilha Project consists of the re-urbanization of a 500 ha area in the Rio de Janeiro port region. Several changes in local infrastructure are being implemented, including a significant change in the road system, with the demolition of the former “Via Perimetral” viaduct and construction of 4 new tunnels: • Saúde tunnel - 35 m long (Waimberg et al, 2014); • “Binária tunnel” - 1012 m long; • “Via Expressa” twin tunnels - 1850 m long each way. The tunnels were excavated almost completely in rock using conventional drill and blast methodology and only some short stretches in weathered rock, associated to faults zones, residual soils and marine sediments close to the tunnel portals. During excavation of access shaft and “Via Expressa” and “Binária” tunnels significant ground settlements as well as settlements of buildings founded both on shallow and deep foundations were measured. These values could not be associated to conventional tunneling induced settlement troughs. This paper focuses on the “Via Expressa” tunnels, presenting a brief description of the project as a whole, its geological and geotechnical background, monitoring results, and a discussion of possible causes of the measured settlements. PROJECT DESCRIPTION The Porto Maravilha Project is an integrated multidisciplinary action on behalf of the Rio de Janeiro city council with support from the State and Federal Governments. In addition to creating new conditions for working, housing, transport, culture and leisure for the resident population, it also promotes expressive economic development in the region (Portonovo, 2015). Porto Maravilha Project is carrying out actions for the recovery of the region’s historical heritage, as well as promoting the population´s social and economic development. One of the main benefits of the Porto Maravilha Project is the construction of the new traffic system in the port area, consisting of the Express and Binário roadways. The new project, which will replace the current Perimetral Rodrigues Alves viaduct system, will increase traffic flow capacity by 27%."

The Phu Kham Copper-Gold Operation (Phu Kham) is located in northern Laos, approximately 140 kilometres from the capital, Vientiane. The operation is a producing asset for Australian-based copper and gold producer, PanAust Limited (PanAust) and is operated by Lao-registered company, Phu Bia Mining Limited (Phu Bia Mining). PanAust holds a 90 % interest in Phu Bia Mining. The Government of Laos owns the remaining 10 %.The Phu Kham Operation has recently undergone a series of process improvements to treat the anticipated competent ores scheduled for 2017 and 2018. The operation’s comminution circuit, which comprises a semi-autogenous (SAG) mill and two ball mills, each with 13 megawatts (MW) of installed power, was expected to be SAG mill limited when treating competent basement rock. Ausenco Services Pty Ltd (Ausenco), was engaged to help optimise and enhance the productivity of the Phu Kham comminution circuit over an eight-month period. The work involved participating in and overseeing the redesign of the SAG mill liner systems and developing operational strategies for maximising throughput through to the end of mine life. Ausenco’s comminution optimisation tool, Ausgrind, was used to benchmark and analyse plant data with empirical models, predict circuit performance for varying ore characteristics and evaluate liner wear and predict the life for varying operating parameters. Variances between the actual and the predicted values were assessed in detail to identify missed opportunities, and guiding operating parameters were redefined to maximise throughput and productivity. In combination with the redesigned liner system, optimised process controls for varying ore competencies, and improved operational practices and troubleshooting strategies, increased Phu Kham overall production, exceeding the milling capacity when treating competent ores. The treatment of a hydrobiotite containing 0·64 per cent copper with various soluHons showed that a high percentage (up to 90 per cent) of the copper can be extracted under mild conditions (1 M BCI, 85°C) or withsaline solutions (20 per cent by weight NaCI or NH4F, 400°C). The latter results suggest that the copper is incorporated in the interstratified vermiculite of a vermicuHte-biotite mica and the solutions (NaCl and NH4F) which reacted with the vermiculite without attacking the biotite gave the highest extraction yields.In general, extraction yields with saline solutions increased with the temperature (between 100 and 400°C) and duration (3 or 6 days) of the treatment but were not appreciably affected by the initial pH of solutions.The results of RCI treatment especially may have a bearing on the hydrometallurgical treatment of refractory copper ores where copper is tied to gangue silicates.

This paper briefly describes the principal commercial and near-commercial deposits of gold-bearing gravel and the important placer-mining operations in Lemhi County, Idaho. It is on of a series on western mining districts being published by the Bureau of Mines. This paper is based on a field survey of the placer-mining districts of Lemhi County in the summer of 1938. Available information concerning gold-bearing gravels was obtained from prospectors and claim owners; operators supplied the data on mining operations. No attempt was made actually to test the gravels. The principal object of the examination was to indicate placer areas worthy of further investigation by prospective operators.

Multiple seam underground coal mining is ubiquitous in Appalachia. Many coal properties have from two to ten or more economically mineable coal seams. Because of the ability to penetrate 600-feet to 1,000-feet or deeper into the mountainside leaving panels of web pillars separated by barrier pillars, highwall mining is a hybrid between surface and underground mining. As a result, many of the ground control problems commonly associated with multiple seam underground mining exist with multiple seam highwall mining. These include: i) superjacent mines, subsidence and caving propagating to overlying seams and ii) mines, pooled water and the potential for inundation resulting from a iii) breakthrough between an active highwall mine and abandoned underground mines in the same or superjacent seams, the presence of overlying or underlying mine workings where iv) pillar columnization in the active mine is not possible, and v) the question of whether to mine ?top-down? or ?bottom-up.? Case histories are presented from southeast Ohio where the Middle Kittanning No. 6 and Lower Kittanning No. 5 seams are successfully highwall mined with 20-feet to 40-feet of largely shale interburden. A highwall miner was caught in a highwall collapse in the Middle Kittanning No. 6 seam when it was overmining auger workings in the Lower Kittanning No. 5 seam. Multiple seam interaction caused by the overmining transferred overburden stress onto the Lower Kittanning No. 5 seam. The overburden concentrated through web pillars initiated auger web pillar failure, resulting in roof collapse and subsidence in the Lower Kittanning No. 5 seam that propagated up to the Middle Kittanning No. 6 seam. A second case history involves multiple seam highwall mining in southeast Kentucky. The A3 Rider, A3, B2, and C1 seams are being highwall mined around abandoned underground mines in the A3 and B2 seams and augering in the A3 Rider. Because of spoil storage constraints for the surface contour mines, the highwall miner follows the active pits in each seam so a standard sequence of ?top-down? or ?bottom-up mining does not exist. The planning and engineering design considerations associated with each case history is presented along with geotechnical information. In the case of the highwall collapse a back analysis is presented of the stability and safety factors for the auger webs, highwall miner web pillars, and barrier pillars.

Magnesia minerals are included in most iron ore sinter mixes to provide the MgO requirements of blast furnace slag. The properties of these minerals have an influence on the eventual sintering properties of the mixes. A detailed study was undertaken of serpentine and dolomite and the use of limestone, olivine and magnesite was also investigated. A consideration of particle properties indicated that as these materials calcine a reduction in size can occur together with cracking and changes in surface properties. These changes could affect the permeability of the sintering bed and sintering performance. Studies of sintering reactions showed that magnesium and calcium, formed from the calcination of dolomite, are extremely mobile before the formation of melt. Evidence suggests that the movement of these oxides into surrounding areas is via a solid-state diffusion process. The diffusion of Ca into the surrounding hematite particles is faster than that of Mg, resulting in the formation of dicalcium ferrite and magnetite or magnesioferrite, the last two subsequently being converted to dicalcium ferrite in the presence of Ca with removal of Mg from the structure as ferroan periclase. Studies of pilot-plant sinters indicated that reaction mechanisms formulated from the bench-scale studies were occurring in actual sintering processes. The differences in sintering reactions between dolomite and serpentine were considered to be the major cause of differences in the availability of lime for bonding phase formation. Pilot-scale studies indicated that the sintering properties of a mix containing dolomite could be improved by increasing the basicity of the sinter mix while keeping the MgO level constant

The United States Bureau of Mines is establishing a computerized mineral inventory system to help the Federal Government appraise its mineral position and prepare programs insuring against critical shortages of materials. This system, called the Minerals Availability System (MAS), is a component of the Bureau's minerals intelligence function designed to conduct and maintain an inventory of minerals important to the Nation. The MAS defines the physical and commercial availability of the mineral resources. Known resources are evaluated and classified by deposit for entry into a computer storage and retrieval system. An integral concern of these evaluations is the cost of mining and beneficiating the ore contained in specific deposits. To meet this concern, a cost handbook was developed as an aid to preparing feasibility-type estimates for capital and operating costs of mining and primary beneficiation of various types of mineral occurrences. Cost data, obtained from U.S. and Canadian companies, were used as the basis of this handbook. The handbook presents cost curves and equations for each component of the mining and beneficiation process. Factors for each cost component are also given, thereby allowing the updating of cost for time, geographic location, labor rates, and mining and milling conditions. Included in the latter conditions are items such as the length of haul, need for rock bolts, and a rock work index for ores and rocks of various hardnesses. 1.2. USE OF THE HANDBOOK Using the handbook a feasibility-type estimate falling within 25% of expected actual cost is obtainable by summarizing cost components. This handbook should not be used to determine the cost of any single component of a mining or beneficiation system, as any single component may not fall within the 257 limit. It must be understood that anyone who uses the handbook must have a comprehensive knowledge of mining and processing technology and cost estimating procedures. The river- or dredge-coal industry of Pennsylvania is conducted on many of the rivers and creeks that drain the Pennsylvania anthracite fields. Coal thus recovered found its way into the streams as coal was being prepared for market by the anthracite industry proper, in the northeastern part of the State. The Principal rivers draining; the fields, those where dredging is taking place, are the Susquehanna, Schuylkill, and Lehigh. Several creeks - the Shamokin, Mahanoy, Wiconisco, and Swatara - also are productive sources of river or creek coal. Operations along the streams cover a wide territory, and along the Susquchanna alone; dredges are recovering coal for about 160 miles. Anthracite was a significant factor in the early industrial development of the United States. Industry used it to generate steam, and railroads used it as fuel for locomotives; but it probably was most important industrially in the smelting of iron ore. For more than a hundred years homes have been heated with this fuel. From the beginning of mining in 1807, to 1940, more than 4 billion net tons of anthracite had been prepared and shipped to market. In the preparation process much of the smaller-size coal and refuse found their way into rivers and creeks which carried the material many miles. This study is concerned with the recovery of that anthracite from those rivers and creeks.

"This paper expands the SAG mill survey database published by the Author at Procemin 2013. The new database includes 49 published SAG/AG mill surveys and includes mills from all over the world. The paper will compare the survey database to SAG mill models by Austin, Morrell and Hogg & Fuerstenau with the purpose of demonstrating the degree of fit of the models to surveys and validating any empirical “fitting factors” used in the models.SAG mill power draw models are used in mill design and grinding circuit modelling to predict how much power will be consumed by a particular mill geometry and operating configuration. The importance of conducting surveys suited to model calibration will be highlighted because the review of literature shows that survey information important to modelling is often missing or omitted. A recommendation for the collection of data during a mill survey is presented, along with some assumptions used by the Author in the absence of certain data. The benefit to mining companies of publishing their survey data, and thereby allowing modellers to improve their model calibration, is discussed.The comparison of models requires a discussion of the measurement of power in a mill drive system as the models use slightly different position in the electrical network for ""where power is measured"". The benchmarking of models against plant operations requires a similar discussion of power measurement."

Gentlemen: I'm glad to see the crowd that's here this morning, glad to renew acquaintances with many old friends, and if you'll look at the program you'll see a heading there which states that as President I have the honor and pleasure to be here to address the membership of this meeting of the Rocky Mountain Coal Mining Institute, this being the 49th regular meeting. The tentative schedule of this gathering lists on the program the "President's Address," and I want to assure you that this will not be an address or a lengthy speech. It's said that a good speaker is one who arises to the occasion and then promptly sits clown, so please be at ease for I intend to sit clown very soon. There are other men here who have spent time writing and preparing papers on subjects that are to come up for discussion at this meeting, which will be, I'm sure, more interesting than what I have to say this morning; so again I'll say, we'll get this part of the program under way promptly.

Anglo American Platinum has adopted a strategy of Best Practice Principles (BPP) for sampling, mass measurement, analysis and metal accounting for more than a decade now. When new plants are designed, the most suitable sampling equipment and sampling protocols are implemented and material flows and plant layouts are designed around sampling strategies. A few years ago, a crushing plant for a high-grade matte stream was commissioned.The design called for the high-grade material to be crushed to 95 per cent passing 2 mm and the design allowed for a single cutter primary Vezin sampler, increments taken from a gravity flowing stream at regular intervals, whilst filling a tanker for the pneumatic offload at our base metal refinery. This was a single point of sampling and analysis that would measure the wanted output from our smelting complex and the input to our refineries. In addition, the design incorporated the functionality to collect increments in an ‘interleaved’ fashion from the Vezin sampler for internal precision checks.The metal accounting strategy for Anglo Platinum is the ongoing measurement of all inputs, outputs and stock levels for all our operations for platinum group metal (PGM) and base metal (BM) content. Included are yearly stocktakes, usually done on 1 February every year, across the smelters and refineries (at least the base metal refinery). A trend was developing in the accounting period immediately following the introduction of the new crushing and sampling facility, whereby the absolute difference between the physical stock and theoretical stock (PGMs predominantly) increased for the two respective sites on an ongoing basis. The smelter (sender) showed an increase in physical stock compared to the theoretical stock and the base metal refinery (receiver) showed that their theoretical stock increased against their physical stock. Because of this anomaly, an additional stocktake was held in September for the period in question and it was confirmed through the physical stock measurement results, that the PGM accounting problem was indeed pointing towards the evaluation of the high-grade matte stream.This paper showcases parts of the process that took place to explain the poor accountabilities for the respective sites. Previous results from the sampler ratification process (of the interleaved sampling design) were analysed again, a physical inspection was carried out on the sampling system again and the sampler performance was monitored (quality control parameters) for the period.From these investigations, it was found that airflows present inside the Vezin introduced the sampling bias and a change in sampling protocol was introduced as well as physical changes to the sampling equipment were made to eliminate the airflow and thus the bias conditions significantly. The accounting period which followed, after a phased upgrading process, showed that the accounting between our smelter and base metal refinery had been restored to within statistical limits (difference between physical and theoretical stock below five per cent relative to theoretical stock).CITATION:Kruger, C J and le Roux, E, 2017.
