ZrB2 was produced in batches of 4 to 6 Ib by interaction of ZrO2, B4C, B203, and carbon at around 2000°C in a simple graphite resistance furnace. Techniques of production are discussed and the final design of a suitable furnace is described in detail. Several other borides were made by the same technique and the process appears to have possibilities for commercial production. N seeking out new hard and refractory com- pounds, many researchers have turned to the investigation of the borides and excellent papers have been published on the properties of these compounds. Few papers, however, have appeared on the techniques and problems concerned with the production of these high temperature substances. This report describes progress made in developing a method for preparing zirconium diboride, ZrB2, on a pilot plant scale. The literature of the borides and other refractory hard metals recently has been reviewed, annotated, and classified so completely' that it is needless to attempt such an outline here. It is enough to say that three borides of zirconium have been reported: ZrB, ZrB2, and ZrB12.2 ZrB2 is the most stable of these and is especially stable in the presence of carbon up to and including its melting point of around 3000°C. Like most borides, it can be prepared in several ways. It can be prepared by synthesis of the elements, but these are expensive and difficult to produce in a high state of purity. Obviously, production directly from the oxides would have decided economic advantages. In electrolytic production such as that of calcium boride,:' the product is recovered as a sludge mixed with electrolyte; and separation of product from adhering electrolyte and regeneration of the electrolyte is an involved and difficult process. The work on borides was started on a small scale in 1948. Late in 1949, Naval Ordnance expressed a specific interest in ZrB2 and the project then centered on this compound. After the usual experimental work necessary in a new field, ZrB2 of good quality was produced by heating mixtures of B4C, ZrO2, B2O3, and carbon to a temperature of about 2000 °C in a resistance-type electric furnace. Over 100 lb was made for experimental use tests, and the method of production probably could be expanded into a commercial operation. A similar process has been described by Kieffer and coworkers.' The main chemical problems were the development of proper charges to insure complete reduction of the elements, determination of the proper temperature range at which these reductions took place, and adoption of techniques necessary to pre- vent inclusion of such impurities as carbon and nitrides. The mechanical problems consisted of developing a simple practical furnace that would attain the high temperatures required and permit use of a controlled atmosphere when necessary and determining of suitable refractories. Both problems were solved by designing a crucible resistance furnace. Crucible Resistance Electric Furnace Attempts were first made to produce ZrB2 in an electric arc furnace, but such a furnace would not provide the degree of carbon control required for producing clean graphite-free borides, so it was decided to try working in a crucible. Obviously, the furnace would have to be constructed of graphite, as the temperatures required are too high for other refractories or heating elements. Crucibles were made by hollowing out segments of graphite electrodes, which were fitted with a cover and clamped between two electrodes so that the current passing through the thin wall of the crucible would generate heat, using the principle of the Helberger crucible furnace."? Preliminary tests with this type of furnace were encouraging and led to the furnace design shown in Fig. 1. The essential components were a thin-walled graphite crucible resting on a graphite block, which formed the lower electrode assembly, and a top electrode assembly swung from a pipe column making contact with the top of the crucible. The space around the crucible was filled with graphite prepared from waste electrodes crushed to about ¼ in. This packing had excellent insulating properties, both electrically and thermally, and could be removed easily and quickly from around the crucible by means of an industrial vacuum cleaner. The largest resistor crucibles were machined from 8 in. electrode stock and were 26 in. long, with a side wall Yi in. thick and a 1 in. bottom. Temperatures were determined optically by sighting down a 1 in. hole drilled longitudinally through the top electrode and the crucible cover. Sealing this hole at the top was a water-cooled brass sight-glass assembly, shown in Fig. 2. An opening was provided for a light flow of helium to keep the sight opening clear of smoke, and a glass prism above the sight glass changed the line of sight to the horizontal for easier reading. More recently, the prism and optical pyrometer were replaced by a photoelectric recording pyrometer. At first the charges were placed directly in the resistor crucible but this meant that everything had to be withdrawn from the furnace every time the charge was emptied. In an investigation of the incineration of combustible wastes, the Bureau of Mines studied the effect of dimensional parameters, process variables, and fuel properties on the operation of an incinerator that consisted of a single cylindrical combustion chamber in which all combustion air was supplied tangentially above the fuel. Construction and operation of three designs of such a device proved that the tangential overfire air design is effective in providing efficient combustion and low concentration of particulate matter in the effluent gas. A correlation was found that related burning rate with air rate, chamber diameter, and inlet port diameter. In one of the incinerator models, ignition was by radiation from a preheated surface. The temperature of this surface was required to be 1,400° to 1,600° F to insure ignition of moist refuse; however, this had little effect on combustion rates. In the combustion of moist refuse, evaporation of the water proceeded through the fuel bed as a wave, with an ignition wave following the evaporation.

As virgin coal reserves dwindle, more and more mines are being opened in areas with previous mining. As addressed in this conference before, there are solutions available for designing mines extracting coal from reserves with known underground workings above or below the target seam. Often times, however, mining begins with limited knowledge of the underground workings. Even with careful planning, the proposed design has limited success because the ?facts? as presented during planning turn out not to be as accurate as one would like. At National Coal?s Mine #14, mining the Walnut Mountain seam, after driving the main entries in some 34 crosscuts, it was found during routine mine examinations that the pillars had separated from the roof in a few areas of the mains. Immediate roof conditions proved to be sound but questions arose concerning the stability of the main roof and floor. Core tests were done to better determine the rock strengths and characteristics. The paper presents the ideology used to tackle the effects of mining over old works in an operating coal mine. This paper discusses the analysis of the symptoms observed and the steps taken to ensure that this pillar separation was caused by the underlying old workings and that the separation was expected and controllable.

"The Kelsey Centrifugal Jig (KCJ) utilizes the application of centrifugal force (and the resultant enhanced gravitational field) to conventional jigging technology principles to successfully and efficiently process materials where the valuable constituent particulates are very fine and/or where there is a small specific gravity differential between these and the gangue minerals.The KCJ is applicable to a broad range of fine mineral recovery duties, with current installations in the mineral sands, tin, tantalum, gold and nickel industries. Other areas of application are being developed with mineral commodities including tungsten, base metals, iron ore, chromite and apatite/feldspar.Information on the principles of operation of the KCJ, typical performance figures in a number of application areas, comparison to centrifugal concentrators, key elements for a successful KCJ operation and recent developments with the KCJ are presented in this paper to demonstrate the capabilities of the KCJ.INTRODUCTIONAfter a number of years of development by inventor Chris Kelsey, the first commercial KCJ unit was installed at the Renison Bell tin mine in Tasmania, Australia, in 1992. The subsequent decade saw the installation of further KCJ units in applications including tin, tantalum and mineral sands.Development and improvement in KCJ hardware continued and culminated in the introduction of the high-capacity Model J1800 KCJ and standard features such as an automatic screen cleaning system. This opened up further markets and resulted in Model J1800 KCJ installations in the gold and nickel industries, as well as further KCJ installations in the mineral sands and tin industries. In recent years, work has continued on application of the KCJ to many other duties in industries including tungsten, base metals, iron ore, chromite, apatite/feldspar, etc."

1. Introduction.-The first part of this papers treats of the causes and the restraining of piping in steel ingots; the second& considers the causes and the restraining of -segregation; and the third proposes certain precautions in engineering specifications concerning these two defects. Into their causes I have looked carefully, with the purpose of arriving at rational methods of restraining them, and at efficient ways of detecting. and measuring the harm which they cause, so as to benefit the public by reducing this harm at once effectively and with the least expense to the manufacturer, and therefore in the end with the least expense to the consumer. In Part I., I infer that the pipe is chiefly due to what I, call the virtual expansion of the outer walls of the ingot in the early part of the freezing. I find that the upper and smooth-faced part of the pipe probably forms while the interior is still molten, but that the lower, steep, and crystal-faced part probably forms in metal which is already firm. Of the five causes which may co-operate to limit the depth of the pipe, I find that three-blow-holes, sagging, and the progress of freezing from below upwards-are usually effective. I find that the pipe may be lessened by casting (1) in wide ingots,; (2) in sand molds, especially if these are pre-heated (this is rarely expedient); (3) at the tops instead of at the bottom; (4) slowly; (5) and with the large end up; (6) by the use of a sinking-head or other means of retarding the cooling of the top; (7) by permitting blow-holes to form; and (8) by liquid compression.) Most of these I consider in some detail, and in particular I dwell on the advantages of casting with the large end up, and I propose certain administrative arrangements to permit this.

Investigations of world wide coal face strata control practice, the study of theoretical calculations and detailed engineering analysis have been combined to design and select a powered roof support suitable for use in conjunction with the extraction of 4.5-m (14.7- ft) of the 7.5-m (24.6-ft) thick Warwickshire Thick Coal Seam. The interface between geotechnical criteria and engineering design has been closely considered along with the following 3 important factors: Firstly, the need to further improve strata control and operational characteristics whilst producing a wall integrated overall face design. Secondly, to enable the supports to be rapidly transported from face to face in roadways driven at the minimum size for operational requirements. Finally, to provide hydraulic power, automatic control and monitoring systems which will improve operations reduce manpower requirements and improve management information. Clear design requirements were determined in order to allow selection on a commercial basis. A method of tendering is described with the subsequent analysis and selection process. In the event oversupply of coal in the UK resulted in the order not being placed. Brief consideration has been given to supports suitable for reserves to be mined In a few year's time where there is potential for extraction well in excess of 4.5-m (1 4.74.

During a research program to develop improved methods for recovering elemental sulfur and useful sulfur compounds from secondary source materials, the technical literature was searched for pertinent articles on processing methods. This report summarizes results of the literature survey and describes the more important processes that have been used or suggested for recovering sulfur and sulfur compounds from all non-Frasch sources. The bibliography presented represents a survey of the available English language literature on the subject through 1958, with particular attention focused on the period 1950 through 1958. Engineering Index and Industrial Arts Index were the principal guides used in the survey of this period. Chemical Abstracts was used to a limited extent to identify a few key foreign articles and patents. The Sulfur Symposium (4)4 published in November 1950 by Industrial and Engineering Chemistry includes a broadly representative selection of the literature up to 1949. Therefore, this reference was used extensively to locate and list pertinent articles on processing methods reported in the period prior to 1950.

The Cuyuna range in central Minnesota has been the source of substantial tonnages of, manganiferous iron ores for almost four decades. To Increase the Nation's self-sufficiency in manganese reserves, the Bureau of Mines initiated a comprehensive investigative program to determine and develop the potential manganese reserves in the region. In the course of compiling all available information on the Cuyuna range, the Scallop-Todd lease appeared to be an area having favorable possibilities for developing substantial reserves of manganese. Early drilling on this lease indicated considerable tonnages of material relatively high in manganese. More recent drilling substantiated the size of the deposit but Indicated lower manganese values. However, beneficiation tests of samples obtained from the recent drilling indicated that the material was amenable to concentration.

The mining methods described were developed during the last 30 years to copy with conditions peculiar to arctic and subarctic regions arid are now used by a large segment of the placer mining industry in Alaska. The operations described have been classified if m ii into three main categories: Those having sluices at a bedrock level, those having sluices above bedrock and those having mobile nonfloating washing plants (dryland dredges). Diesel-powered bulldozers and draglines convey or clevate gold-bearing gravel to the sluices, remove tailings, and strip waste gravel and other overburden. Diesel-powered centrifugal pumps supply water foe sluicing and hydraulic stripping. Detailed descriptions and unit cost arc presented for 14 operations to illustrate the numerous arrangements udder the first 2 categories.]

"This paper presents the results of an industrial test using 8 t/d of Baotou concentrate (50% REO) of a clean metallurgical process, which includes: 1. Roasting with H2SO4 at low temperature (220~260 0C) in a batch roasting furnace followed by water leaching to obtain a leach liquor as feed with a yield of >95% RE and Th, recovering F as fluoride, producing a leach residue amounting to 1/3 of an equivalent high temperature residue and containing <0.03% Th and radioactivity < 3×104 Bq/kg compared to the normal high temperature residue containing 0.2-0.3% Th and 1×105 Bq/kg. 2. Separating Th with N1923 and extracting RE by P507 has been completed in mixer-settlers. Test results indicate that the ThO2 product has a purity of > 95% with a yield of 99%, and the RE has a yield of >95%, in which ThO2/REO <5×10-6, and that P507 loaded RE connect straight with separating RE using P507-HCl system. 3. Treatment and multipurpose use of "three wastes" (water, gas and solids) are discussed in some detail."

This information circular, which describes the methods and costs of sinking a small underground shaft with steel supports at the Keystone mine of American Smelting and Refining Co., near Crested Butte, Colo., is one of a series being prepared by the Bureau of Mines on current shaft-sinking practices in various mining districts of the United States. Preparations for sinking a combined exploration, development, and production shaft from the lowest level of the Keystone mine began early in 1957. This vertical, three-compartment, 6-1/4-by 16-foot rectangular shaft was to be sunk in separate stages or lifts so as to correspond with the progress of an associated lateral exploration and development program. The first section of the shaft was collared and sunk to a depth of 209 feet between September 1957 and April 1958. Because of the depressed base-metal market, the mine was shut down as soon as the initial phase of the exploration and development program had been completed and before any deeper sinking could be attempted.

"""POTASH"" is a term applied to the compounds of the element potassium (K) and when used in agriculture and industry is ex-pressed in terms of potassium oxide (K2O), regardless of the actual com-position of the compound. When a chemical analysis is made of a fertilizer, the amount of K is deter-mined and then calculated to the equivalent amount of K2O. However, the compound K2O does not exist in nature. Most of the world's potash supply is derived from mineral deposits similar to those in Saskatchewan and New Mexico. However, there is some production from concentrated surface brines such as occur in Searles Lake, California; Salduro Marsh, Utah; the Dead Sea; and from well brines in Micl1igan."

Sodium sulfate is one of the larger tonnage industrial minerals. A little more than half of this tonnage — 3 Mt/a (3.3 million stpy) of natural product— is recovered from ore deposits. Most of the rest is produced as a byproduct from other manufacturing operations. Sodium sulfate is mined in a variety of ways. These include conventional room-and-pillar mining, strip mining, in situ leaching of thick ore beds, solar evaporation and cooling-crystallization of lake brine, and the pumping of brine from complex salt deposits. There is also a variety of commercial sodium sulfate ore sources. They include thenardite (the mineral form of sodium sulfate, or Na2SO4), mirabilite (glauber salt,Na2SO4•10H2O), glauberite (Na2SO4•CaSO4), astra-kanite (bloedite; Na2SO4•MgSO4•4H2O), burkeite(2Na2SO4•Na2CO3), sodium sulfate-containing caliche and various brines.

"Constrained groove pressing (CGP), as a severe plastic deformation (SPD) technique, is one of the applicable methods for sheet metal forming capable of producing ultra-fine grained materials (UFGMs). In CGP, processing and die design parameters can significantly affect the deformation response of sheet metal specimen. Having said this, in the present research the effects of die design variables and processing parameters (i.e. shear angle and friction) on the deformation behaviour of an Al-Mg-Si Alloy are studied thoroughly. Finite element analysis (FEA), was used to evaluate the effectiveness of mentioned parameters on the deformation homogeneity, strain distribution and pressing load variations. Also, mechanical properties of the deformed sample in term of micro-hardness was analyzed. It is observed that with increasing the shear angle, effective stress, strain and pressing load are enhanced. Moreover, by increasing the coefficient of friction, pressing load enhances. The color coded micro-hardness measurement showed a good agreement with the strain distribution obtained from FEA (higher hardness for the zones associated with higher shear plastic strain values).INTRODUCTIONWork hardening results in enhanced mechanical properties upon cycles of deformation (Hosford & Caddell, 2007). However, the formability of the processed products are affected by work hardening reducing the possibility of processing in subsequent deformation cycles. Therefore, many industrial processes cannot be performed on sheet metals to produce products with desired mechanical and physical properties (Valiev, Islamgaliev, & Alexandrov, 2000). Severe plastic deformation (SPD) is an effective grain refining technique which can impose large plastic strains through cold working on a metallic specimen (Bisadi, Rastgou, Payganeh, Zeynali, & Ghahremani, 2010). SPD techniques are mainly categorized into three types; sheet, bulk and tube forming. Among SPD sheet forming methods, Constrained Groove Pressing (CGP) (Shin, Park, Kim, & Park, 2002), Accumulative Roll Bonding (ARB) (Saito, Tsuji, Utsunomiya, Sakai, & Hong, 1998) and Repetitive Corrugation and Straightening (RCS) (Zhu, Lowe, Jiang, & Huang, 2001) possess potential applications in manufacturing industries."

A mineral survey of portions of two contiguous WSAs (Wilderness Study Areas) along the South Fork Owyhee River in southwestern Idaho and north-central Nevada was done by the U.S. Bureau of dines in 1984. The portions of the WSAs, known as study areas, have a combined area of 47,610 acres. The Idaho study area consists of 42,430 acres of the 42,510-acre South Fork Owyhee River WSA (ID-16-53). The Nevada study area consists of 5,180 acres of the 7,840-acre South Fork Owyhee River WSA (NV-010-103A). The Idaho study area is within the Boise District of the Bureau of Land Management, and the Nevada study area is within the Elko District. In the Nevada study area, no claims or hard rock mineral occurrences are known.

Samples weighing O&#183; 2 g are digested with 2 ml of 72 per cent perchloric acid for 2 hr at 180&#176;C, and then diluted to 10 ml. with water. After settling, an aliquot of clear solution is reduced with ascorbic-citric acid, and then a zinc dithiol solution is added to form a coloured molybdenum complex which is extracted with petroleum spirit for comparison with standards.Concentrations down to 2 p.p.m. may be analysed at rates up to 150 determinations per day.

WHEN so many statements are being made relative to the requirements of zinc metal, it is difficult for some of us who are acquainted with the industry to visualize how it is possible to step up production so as to supply some of the fantastic requirement figures that are published from time to time. I shall attempt to approach this subject from the standpoint of existing conditions which affect production, also keeping in mind the price ceiling under which the industry operates. Total production of primary and secondary zinc in the United States for 1941 will be about 878,000 tons, to which should be added about 36,000 tons of Mexican slab zinc available for consumption or export from the United States, giving a total available of 914,000 tons. Production of slab zinc of all grades in 1942 should be 953,000 tons. Adding the available Mexican supply should bring the total to 989,000 tons.

In 1871, two furnaces at the Glendon Iron Works, which had been blown out on account of the "coal strike," were altered from the open-top plan with side flues for collecting the gas, to closed tops with cup and cone. In one furnace the suppression of the side flues permitted a considerable alteration in the profile, but in the other (No. 5) no change in this respect was made; the side flues were simply bricked up and new ones cut through the sides close to the top. This furnace was in blast over four years, and we can, therefore, form a pretty good idea of the effect of the alterations on the furnace process. The principal dimensions are; Height 72&apos;; greatest diameter, 18&apos;; diameter at tuyeres, 8&apos;; diameter of top, 10&apos;; diameter at stock line (point at which the top of the materials is kept), 11&apos;; cubic contents, 11,900 cubic feet. The table below shows the average results for periods of twentysix weeks each. 1st, of the open-topped furnace; 2d, of the furnace with the first charger used, which was an ordinary cup and cone (diameter of cone 5&apos; 2") 3d, with the charger used ever since, a " double " cone 7&apos; 5" diameter outside, having a central opening 3&apos; in diameter. The diagram (Plate 11) shows the daily variations, in the grade of the irons for the same periods.*

"This paper describes the present approach of the Mines Branch to the problem of measuring the stress condition in the interior of rocks surrounding underground openings. An instrument, which will be referred to as a stressmeter, has been developed at the Mines Branch to measure un-directional stress changes in absolute units. There are two modes of operation of this stressmeter. It can be regarded as a fixed instrument, in which case it is installed at the end of a diamond drill hole and left in position to record any subsequent stress changes taking place. Alternatively, three of the stressmeters can be used in conjunction with a trepanning opera-tion to allow the existing stress condition to be determined. The initial laboratory work and subsequent experiences in the field with the stressmeter are described. All the field development work on the stressmeter was made possible through the co-operation of Canadian Refractories Limited, Kilmar, Quebec."

This paper intends to introduce the development of copper smelting and converting technologies in China in recent years, with a particular emphasis on the introduction of various continuous converting technologies, and moreover, it analyzes the advantages and disadvantages of those technologies, including their impact on the downstream anode refining from different points of view. INTRODUCTION At present, many converting technologies are used in copper pyro-metallurgical plants in China, including Peirce-Smith (PS) converter, flash converting furnace, multi-lance based top blowing, bottom blowing and so on. These technologies have spanned a wide range of time. PS converter technology has been applied in copper smelters for many years and most of the blister copper have been produced by this technology; flash converting technology has been developed since 1990s and been maturely applied in several plants up until now; top blowing and bottom blowing technologies have been revived in China in the past decade and boast good environmental protection performance, energy efficiency, throughput capacity and short process flow. All of the said technologies have reference operations in treating high-grade matte. As more and more attention is paid to environmental protection globally and copper smelters continuously seek for cost reduction, it is necessary to share those converting technologies, especially those new converting technologies derived in China, with copper smelting practitioners in the world. This paper aims to analyze the advantages and disadvantages of various technologies from a macroscopic view and discuss their actual application effects, current developments and future improvements. BRIEF INTRODUCTION OF VARIOUS CONVERTING TECHNOLOGIES IN CHINA China has seen a rapid development in copper smelting industry in the past 30 years and has become the largest gathering place of copper smelters in the world, most of which are operating with PS converting furnace technology, however, with the increasingly strict environmental requirements of the Chinese government in recent years, the low-level pollution issue and the disadvantage of large gas exhaust amount per unit of copper of converting furnaces are particularly prominent.
