"A new Al-Mg-Si-Zn alloy designed for automotive outer panel was trial-produced with industrial procedure. The final product shows a strong planar anisotropy. X ray diffraction analysis shows such strong anisotropy is caused by the dominating cube texture component in the final product. The reason for such high cube texture component was investigated by tracing texture evolution starting from the hot roll slab. It is found that certain cube texture components already exists in the hot rolled slab. The density of cube texture component shows as a wavy change through the following1st cold rolling, inter-annealing, 2ndcold rolling and solution treatment. This study shows that the cold rolling in the laboratory can well represent the texture evolution during the industrial production. The results obtained by lab rolling hints that change of second cold rolling reduction has weak effect on the planar anisotropy, when the gauge of hot rolled slab and final sheet are fixed.INTRODUCTIONWith the rapid progress of light-weighting in the automotive industry, aluminum sheets get more and more application as closure panel and structure parts. Recently the dominating alloy for outer panel is 6xxx series, containing the main alloy elements Mg and Si. The popular gradesareAA6016,AA6111, AA6022, and AA6014. These alloys still cannot satisfy the various requirements from automotive manufacturers. Most suppliers of automotive aluminum sheets are developing their own specific grades according to the customer’s demand. To increase the baking response, anew Al-Mg-Si-Zn alloy was designed, concerning the high combination energy between Zn solutes and vacancies formed during the quenching stage of automotive sheet manufacture. This combination is helpful to the precipitation of ß”phase during the paint baking (Wang, 2015,2016; Yan, 2014).The plastic strain ratio (r value)is a key index of the formability of automotive body sheet. A high r value means a good formability. The r values in different directions can be used to evaluate the planar anisotropy of the metal sheets. The trial produced Al-Mg-Si-Zn sheet shows a strong planar anisotropy with respect to r values. Since the r value is tightly related with texture, the texture evolution from hot roll slab (HRS) to final T4P temper was analyzed with X ray diffraction (XRD) to find the reason for the high anisotropy. Besides, the cold rolling reduction (CRR) was varied in the laboratory to modify the texture distribution, i.e., the planar anisotropy."

A major problem encountered in dump leaching operations is the plugging of both the dump and the piping by precipitated iron compounds. Bureau of Mines research to obtain basic data on agitation leaching and dump leaching methods has shown that the addition of organic chelating reagents can significantly enhance the lixiviant permeability through the ore and the concentration of the metal values in the liquor. For example, the addition of 5 giL citric acid (CA) to a conventional sulfuric acid lixiviant almost doubled the fluid flow rate through 5-cm-diameter laboratory columns containing copper ore. After 185 h of per-colation leaching, the metal concentrations with (and without, in parentheses) CA were 1.7 (1.5) giL Cu, 200 (70) ppm Mn, 160 (40) ppm AI, and 6 (3) ppm Co. The enhancement of metal concentrations with chelating reagents such as CA was confirmed by determining the solubil-ity of several metal ions as functions of pH and chelating reagent con-centration. When ferric ions became insoluble at pH values above 3, the concentrations of other ions also decreased. The addition of che-lating reagents kept iron, as well as the other dissolved metals, in solution even at pH values as high as 5. Citric acid was a more effective chelating reagent than gluconic acid, oxalic acid, or sodium lignin sulfonate.

FTIR spectroscopy has been used for the characterization of adsorbed oleate at the fluorite surface. It has been found that modest changes in the adsorption density at high temperature and high oxygen potential do not provide a satisfactory explanation for the significant increase in the hydrophobic character of the system under similar conditions. Rather, FTIR spectroscopic measurements suggest that chemical interaction between adsorbed oleyl groups occurs at high temperature and/or oxygen potential and accounts for the increased hydrophobicity. Specifically, the intensity of the =CH bond of the adsorbed oleate diminishes at high temperature and/or high oxygen potential. Such a phenomenon was not observed in control tests with the calcium oleate soap. For extensive reaction at the fluorite surface, the presence of a new surface species has been identified. These results indicate that the fluorite surface catalyzes an oxidation and/or polymerization reaction between adsorbed oleyl groups which results in a more hydrophobic structure at the fluorite surface.

IN a recent technical paper of the Central Committee of the French Coal Mines (Note technique No. 198, by L. Lahoussay) the author points out that continuous in¬crease in depth of mine shafts makes it more and more necessary to look for appropriate means to reduce the weights and dimensions of the hoisting ropes. Increasing depth demands a larger section and weight for the cable if the useful load is not to be cut down at the same time. This naturally leads to increased cost per ton, and at the same time creates serious mechanical difficulties. The dimensions of the hoisting engine must be increased, acceleration at the start must be decreased so as to avoid periods of excessive peak power loads, and a longer time be allowed to slow down the speed of the hoist when applying brakes. The hoisting rope, upon which depend the dimensions and hence the mass of the hoisting engine, presents the greatest obstacle to the development of hoisting from greater depths. Evidently, for a given depth, the total weight of the rope can be notably reduced by utilizing a wire rope of decreasing section, approaching the theoretical logarithmic form. This is a solution frequently adopted for great depths. Of course, the weight of the rope could be easily' diminished by reducing the useful load, but it is certain that with increasing depth of mining, more effort must be made to confine the hoisting to a small number of shafts, and increase the load hoisted per trip.

The South Deposit Tailings Storage Facility (SDTSF), located at Grange Resources Pty Ltd’s (Grange) Savage River mine in north west Tasmania, has recently begun construction. The facility will provide storage for approximately 37 million cubic metres of tailings, equating to approximately 20 years’ tailings storage.The SDTSF embankment will be constructed entirely out of waste rock won from mining operations, and will feature a flow-through drain constructed from alkaline, non-acid forming (NAF) waste rock. This provides Grange with an economical storage solution for waste management (both tailings and waste rock) and maximises available space on site. The outflows discharged through the alkaline rock ‘flow-through’ will provide a long-term source of alkalinity to Main Creek, subsequently feeding into Savage River. This will provide environmental benefits to the downstream ecology that has long been degraded due to the effects of legacy acid and metalliferous drainage (AMD), caused by historical mining operations.CITATION:Longey, R, Brett, D and Simmons, A, 2015. In the spectacular development of pure oxygen steel-making, the process using the vertical lance converter LD, is at the present time the most widely employed. Proper control of slag composition during the steel-making process appears to be essential in achieving satisfactory blowing from both the metallic yield and metallurgical points of view. The paper illustrates the primary importance of the presence of a large quantity of metal droplets in the slag during the process. In the case of both phosphorus and hematite pig iron, it can be deduced from the phase diagrams and confirmed by experimentation that nonhomogeneous slags are one of the causes of slag overflowing during the blow. The problem is however a complex one and further physicochemical studies appear necessary. Finally, the new continuous steelmakingprocess developed by IRSID is described. PEOPLE who knew Henri Marion Howe have said that he took great pleasure in speculating on the future of metallurgical processes. It is therefore not inappropriate to devote, in his memory, some description and discussion to processes unknown to the world of his time, in particular oxygen steelmaking and continuous steelmaking. The first industrial application to steelmaking of tonnage oxygen produced by air liquefaction was made in Germany just before the war and consisted in enriching the air blown through the bottom of a basic Begsemer converter in order to melt a higher proportion of scrap and to produce steels with lower nitrogen content than is achieved with conventional practice. While this process was being developed after the war, mostly in Western Europe, steelmakers were becoming increasingly familiar with the technique of blowing pure oxygen from the top, first by means of consumable steel pipes, with or without refractory shielding, and later by water-cooled lances, designed for the purpose and affording longer life. The field was then open for the wide use of pure oxygen in steelmaking, either in existing processes such as open-hearth or electric furnace, or in new processes. These new processes can be broadly classified according to the category of furnace employed. In the case of the vertical converter taken as the first category, bottom-blowing of pure oxygen causes extremely rapid wear of the refractory tuyeres, and although various expedients have been tried to overcome this drawback (such as mixing oxygen with CO2 or H2O or using high pressure oxygen), they have had to be abandoned. The solution for vertical converters has been found in top-blowing with a vertical water-cooled lance; this is known as the LD process or basic oxygen converter process.

Spherical grinding media (balls) are the most widely used media for comminution of ores by grinding. A modelling simulation study of the behavior of two grinding media in the grinding process was conducted to determine the possible advantages of the new shape milling bodies called tetraballpebs. Tetraballpebs are in the shape of tetrahedrons with spherical convex walls. A three dimensional CAD model of the mill drum with a diameter of 1200 mm was used. A continuous operating mode was simulated in terms of the 3D contact elements of the model (milling bodies and mill drum). Simulation tests were carried out in a typical grinding mode and at a typical rotational speed of the drum mill (75 per cent of the critical speed in cataracting mode). Studies carried out with both grinding media include equal number of milling bodies with the same weight and volume. Having thus ensured a uniform mass of the grinding media and same number of milling bodies, and constant other conditions and process parameters, conclusions can be drawn about the influence of the shape of the milling bodies on the grinding process. An investigation of oxidation of various nickel concentrates was carried out using differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). The aim of this study was to determine the ignition temperature and investigate other oxidation behavior of various sulfide-based nickel concentrates. Variables in the experiments were mineralogy, particle size and partial pressure of oxygen with temperature increasing linearly at 25 K/min from 323 to 1023 K (50-750 °C). The igni¬tion temperature was determined to represent the starting point of rapid oxidation. The reac¬tion enthalpies of the concentrates were determined and the amount of heat generated up to various time were used to calculate the extent of reaction. Mineralogical changes at various stages of oxidation were also investigated. For this purpose a second set of DSC-experiments were carried out in which each experiment was interrupted at a desired temperature between 673-873 K. From these tests the weight loss of samples were determined and changes in the individual constituent of sulfide minerals were analyzed. For pentlandite-based Ni-concentrates the ignition temperature was 705-710 K (approximately 435 °C). Pyrite was the first sulfide to oxidize. Reactivity of the violarite-based concentrate was greater than those of the pentlandite-based concentrates. The stoi-chiometry of pentlandite changed before ignition because of preferential oxidation of iron. Rapid oxidation of the pentlandite mineral occurred at about 823 K (550 °C). By 900 K about 90 % of the iron in pentlandite was converted to hematite, and NiS containing some iron was formed.

Radial gas holdup profiles have been measured in a 50x400 cm flotation column using a multi-cell conductivity probe. Three different bubble generation systems were examined: up to eight vertical filter cloth spargers, three horizontal filter cloth spargers, and three (horizontal) Cominco-type spargers. The variables tested were: number of spargers, symmetry of their arrangement, and height above spargers. Batch water with up to 20ppm frother concentration was used. The general observation is that the profiles tend to be uniform (i.e. flat) with some exhibiting a slight wavy shape. The vertical sparger arrangement proved the most difficult to achieve profile symmetry. The horizontal spargers gave uniform profiles at right angle to their length but a decreasing gas holdup along their length; the Cominco-type spargers gave slightly less scatter in the data. Switching off selected spargers (to simulate malfunction) did not produce strong asymmetry in the profiles.

ALUMINUM powder is a well-known article of commerce and in various forms has been marketed widely for use in paint, for pyrotechnic purposes and for exothermic mixtures. For a number of reasons, how- ever, aluminum powder has not been employed extensively in powder metallurgy, although a great many proposals along this line have been offered. Aluminum and aluminum-alloy powders oxidize readily upon exposure to air and the thin film of oxide (or hydroxide) thus formed is highly refractory, in that ordinary gaseous reducing agents such as hydrogen or carbon monoxide do not reduce the oxide to metal at temperatures below the melting point of aluminum. It has been thought that the presence of these films of oxide on aluminum particles would interfere markedly in powder metallurgical work and a number of suggestions have been made, either for preventing the formation of the film through the production of the powders in inert or reducing atmospheres, or for the removal of the oxide by means of powerful reducing agents, including "nascent" or atomic hydrogen released from metal hydrides. 4 second and more serious difficulty in the use of aluminum and aluminum-alloy powders in powder metallurgy resides in the fact that during compression such powders tend to adhere or cold-weld to the die walls, thus interfering with the formation and ejection of a compact. A third difficulty, which has been encountered only with aluminum-alloy powders, is their hardness when compared with elemental aluminum. Certain of these powders are susceptible to age- hardening, which further hinders the formation of strong green compacts. These conditions are particularly true of atomized aluminum-alloy powders. Even in the annealed condition, plastic deformation of alloy powders under pressure is low when compared with unalloyed powders. This fact, coupled with the lower corrosion resistance of the alloy powders, is probably the significant factor in our failure to obtain strong sintered pieces. METHODS OF PRODUCING THE POWER Many methods have been proposed for manufacture of aluminum powder, only a few of which are used commercially. Several of the more important processes include: (I) atomization of the molten metal; (2) mechanical pulverization and other types of comminution; and (3) graining, in which molten aluminum is stirred during freezing. For pigment and certain pyrotechnic uses aluminum flake powder is desirable, because of its greater proportion of surface to volume; and large quantities of such material are made by a procedure that involves stamping or ball milling. The precious stones rubies and sapphires are transparent varieties of the mineral corundum . Essentially they are aluminum oxide , but the aluminum is often replaced. by small amounts of chromium , titanium , or iron . The chromium is said to give a red color , titanium a blue , and iron a yellow . True rubies range from rose to a somewhat purplish red and are sometimes termed " oriental rubies " to distinguish them from spinel rubies , stones of inferior hardness , density , and value . " Oriental rubies " are very rare , and the so-called " pigeon's blood" variety is the most valuable . Sapphires normally range in color from palest blue to deepest indigo , but actually all precious varieties of corundum of any other color than red are called sapphires . The most esteemed tint is like that of the blue cornflower . Colorless corundum of gem quality is called white sapphire ; the yellow variety is described either as yellow or as golden sapphire ; and the pale pink is classed as pink sapphire . The word " oriental " is also used as a prefix in naming varieties of corumdum of less popular colors . For instance , oriental emerald is used for green corundum, oriental topaz for yellow , and oriental amethyst for violet to purple varieties . The chief physical characteristics of rubies and sapphires are hardness , adamantine luster , and moderately high specific gravity ( 3.9 to 4.1) . Next to the diamond, corundum is the hardest of all minerals ; in fact , the sapphire is number 9 on Moh's scale , ranking between the topaz and the diamond. Rubies crystallize in 6-sided prisms terminated by flat faces and other varieties of corundum with twelve inclined faces , six above and six below , meeting in a girdle . Corundum is doubly refractive , with a direction of single refraction running parallel to the edge of the prism . The refractive indexes are very constant, the ordinary index ranging from 1.766 to 1.774 and the extraordinary index from 1.757 to 1.765. The double refraction always remains the same.

Leaching studies of magnesite obtained from Tamilnadu Magnesite Limited, Salem, have been carried out using hydrochloric acid leaching and percentage of magnesium chloride recovered was estimated. The variables considered in this study were the following: duration of leaching, volume percentage of hydrochloric acid, temperature, and pulp density. Percentage recovery of magnesium chloride increased with duration of the leaching, volume % of concentrated hydrochloric acid, and temperature. Percentage recovery of magnesium chloride decreased with increase of pulp density. The optimum conditions found to be pulp density (10%), hydrochloric acid concentration (30%), duration of leaching (2 h), and temperature (348.15 K). Iron was removed by treating the leach liquor with hydrogen peroxide and by raising the pH to 3.5–4. The purified leach liquor was subjected to spray drying for producing high pure magnesium chloride.

The Florida Institute of Phosphate Research (FIPR) has funded a four-year research project to develop a computer model 'which will predict the hydrologic impacts of phosphate mining on surface and groundwater systems. The core of the model is an analytical geographic information system (SPANS) which integrates EPA's Hydrology Simulation Program Fortran (HSPF) surface water model with the McDonald-Harbaugh groundwater model (MODFLOW). The hydrologic model conducts both event and continuous annual Simulations driven by variable precipitation and temperature data. The model is currently being calibrated and will be ready for distribution to the user community in mid-1991.

"Design for reconstruction of the East Flagstaff traffic interchange project located in Flagstaff, Arizona posed particular challenges. The proposed design included construction of a nearly 50-foot tall mechanically stabilized earth (MSE) wall given rightof- way constraints and soft subgrade soils. The tight right-of-way, approximately 15 feet in certain locations, adjacent to existing structures limited the number of viable remedial alternatives to provide grade separation at the proposed bridge abutment without significant settlement. Preliminary analyses indicated the existing subgrade soils - consisting primarily of relatively soft silts and clays with decomposed pumice - would settle approximately 12 to 14 inches resulting in unacceptable wall deformation. Stone columns placed via vibratory methods (vibro-replacement) consisting of circular excavations which penetrate to firm bearing soils and which are filled with crushed stone were selected to densify the existing subgrade soils. The implemented mitigation measures helped limit settlement to less than one inch and allow for successful construction of the project. The project history - including site constraints, subsurface conditions, evaluation of remedial alternatives, stone columns methodology, and effectiveness of ground improvements - will be discussed.IntroductionThis paper describes the subsurface investigation performed for the reconstruction of the Business Route 40 (B-40) (Country Club Drive) and United States (US) 89 Traffic Interchange (TI) located within the city limits of Flagstaff, Arizona. This project is currently referred to as the East Flagstaff TI. The Project Site Vicinity Map is shown below.The former B-40/US 89 TI was considered ineffective in handling the current and projected volumes of traffic which transition from northbound (NB) B-40 to US 89 (both directions), as well as from southbound (SB) US 89 to SB B-40. The intent of the project was to reconstruct the TI to better accommodate projected traffic volumes. The project eliminated the existing ramps from both NB B-40 to SB and NB US 89. The new interchange includes a Tee intersection from B-40 to US 89. In order to accommodate this alignment, the profile of US 89 was raised several feet (on nearly the same as existing horizontal alignment) to match the elevated profile of B-40. B-40 was shifted just west of its current alignment to accommodate construction of a new, wider bridge structure which spans over Industrial Drive, the Burlington Northern Santa Fe (BNSF) railway, and old Route 66. South of the new bridge, B-40 transitioned back to the existing alignment just north of the I-40/B-40 TI. Within the project limits, both US 89 and B-40 were widened to three travel lanes in each direction."

Tailings (flotation waste) that is formed during copper production may be considered in the class of valuable wastes due to the amount of copper it contains. Owing to the decreasing grade values in copper ores, utilization of wastes such as tailings that carry certain amounts of copper as secondary sources has become a necessity in both the economic and environmental sense. This study investigated the usage conditions of five different ammonia salts as leaching reactants for the purpose of selective extraction of copper from tailings. For this purpose, the effects of parameters such as leaching temperature and leaching time were examined at different concentrations of ammonium hydroxide, ammonium carbonate, ammonium nitrate, ammonium chloride, and ammonium persulfate. The copper extraction efficiency in the case of using the aforementioned salts by themselves were listed as (NH4)2CO3 (73%) > (NH4)2S2O8 (69%) > NH4OH (64%) > NH4Cl (42%) > NH4NO3 (40%). The highest copper extraction efficiency was obtained in the leaching process that was conducted with the solutions obtained by mixing ammonia salts in the best conditions. In many cases mine design is the most important driver of the profitability of a mining project, however to reach an æoptimumÆ mine plan many compromises have to be made. Some of the fundamental profit (and loss) drivers relate to stoping methods and stope design parameters. Inevitably trade-offs have to be made between the stability of underground openings, ground support costs and production efficiency. This paper looks at the role of geomechanics in the mine planning and design process. The concepts of æcontrollable lossesÆ and æuncontrollable lossesÆ are developed as a means of partitioning ground control costs. A stope design example is given which provides a method of examining mining costs, and includes a decision making element in order to quantify geotechnical impacts and select stope dimensions. The method also provides a general framework as a means of balancing ground control costs against maximising returns from an underground mining project.

En el pasado, la minera superficial a tajo abierto surgió para obtener principalmente materiales no metálicos de construcción, alcanzando su auge a partir de las últimas décadas del siglo pasado. Sin embargo, existieron algunos obstáculos en el desarrollo de su mecanización y tecnología que posteriormente fueron mejoradas. Posteriormente, existe una competencia por desarrollar equipos mecánicos de mayor capacidad y operación, como un interés por el advenimiento de nuevas tecnologías y uso de la investigación. Finalmente, el panorama sobre el futuro del minado a cielo abierto, presenta condiciones en las que no se asume nuevos progresos mecánicos ni mayores espectativas que en el pasado.

AT THE Belmont mill, the pregnant solution is de¬livered to a 30 by 10-ft. tank, from which it is pumped to three Merrill clarifying presses of the sluice-bar type, whence it flows through the meter to the precipitation supply tank. ?The solution for precipitation is pumped by a 10 by 10-in. Aldrich triplex pump and delivered through a 6-in. line to the forty-eight triangular frame Merrill presses at the head of the mill. Zinc dust is fed in at the pump suction and the solution precipitated to 0.01 to 0.02 oz. silver. The solution flowing from the presses is tested at 1-hr. intervals with sodium sulfide. All solution is precipitated to the same value; 4J tons of solution are precipitated for each ton of ore treated and the presses are cleaned every 15 days. The product from the presses' is dumped into steel cars having steam-jacketed bottoms, in which they are dried until the moisture content is between 15 and 17 per cent. when 8. per cent. of soda and .3 per cent. of borax are added and the contents thoroughly mixed. In the case of special clean-ups, the precipitate is tested and the flux is added to meet the requirements.
