"Demonstration studies were carried on the use of fly ash as soil modifier and supplier of micronutrients to improve the agricultural productivity based on the process optimised at lab scale at Advanced Materials & Processes Research Institute, Bhopal. The field trials were conducted in Uttar Pradesh (North India) Orissa (South Eastern India) and Madhya Pradesh (Central India) under different soil and crop conditions. 100-650 tonnes of fly ash per hectare were applied depending upon the soil and fly ash characteristics. Both short and long term studies on impact of fly ash on soil and food quality were conducted. With the fly ash application, the edible yield of tomato, cabbage, potato, wheat, pea, onion, paddy, sunflower, maize etc., were increased from 12 - 46% as compared to the control soil where no fly ash was used. The crop response to various elements mainly heavy metals grown in soil and fly ash applied soil was found comparable to that of control, which are within the permissible limits and meet the food quality standards. The results of impact of fly ash on biotic and abiotic properties of soil, along with the quantity and quality of agricultural produces generated under pilot scale demonstrations in three different parts of India are discussed in this paper. The outcome of this work could act as guiding force for confidence building and to maximise the use of fly ash, generated from thermal power plants worldwide as one of the major mineral waste for agriculture purposes.IntroductionThe advantages of application of fly ash in terms of improvement of soil properties and crop yields have been published by various researchers in India and abroad. Attention is also given about the possible negative and beneficial impact of pond ash in agriculture due to presence of heavy elements, radioactive nuclides and plant nutrients in fly ash. It is evident from the analysis of Indian fly ash that the presence of heavy elements and radionuclides levels are comparable with normal soil. The positive impact that has been reported is with regard to germination, yield and crop growth. The significant impacts are: long term effect of heavy and toxic elements content of fly ash on soil and up take of these elements by plant. Pilot scale demonstration studies have been completed with varying soil crop-combination under different agro-climatic conditions showed considerable improvement in the productivity of cereals, oil seeds and vegetables."

The Peirce Smith converter is the key metallurgical vessel in the majority of copper smelters. During the two step process, oxygen enriched air is injected through a row of tuyeres into the matte received from a primary smelting unit. Additionally, in the first step the iron content is oxidized into a fayalite slag by the addition of silica. During the second step, the remaining copper sulphide is converted into blister copper with a final sulphur content of approximately 200 ppm. The overall efficiency of this process is determined by the total reaction time, the slag quality and quantity, and the chemistry of the final blister copper. To increase the reaction kinetics during both stages, the METTOP Process Control and Regulation (MPCR) system was developed, which consists of four elements: OPC - Optical product control ACR - Automatic computer regulation GCU - Gas control unit GIS - Gas injection system The OPC system from SEMTECH records the optical spectrum emitted by the off gas flame providing immediate, detailed process information. Using this online data, additional gas can be automatically injected into the converter through a gas injection system opposite the tuyere zone. An improved oxygen distribution in the melt and the accurate determination of the process end point results in a significant reduction in the process cycle time. Furthermore, by maintaining the reaction closer to the equilibrium the final sulphur and oxygen content can be reduced compared to the conventional process. In particular, the final sulphur content can be lower than 70 ppm, eliminating the need for an oxidation step in the anode furnace.

In recent years, federal and state regulatory agencies have tightened air emission standards. Two of the acid gases, hydrochloric acid (HCI) and sulfur dioxide (SO2), are under heavy scrutiny for reduction. . Most traditional scrubbing systems, i.e. wet scrubbers and spray dryers, meet the standards but they typically are high in capital cost, have significant space requirements for equipment, and are difficult to maintain. Dry sodium injection (DSI) is a alternative technology that has been shown to be effective in HCl and SO2 removal while being the inverse to the problems listed with traditional systems. This paper covers the mechanics of dry injection scrubbing using the most effective sorbents, sodium bicarbonate and mechanically-refined trona (natural sodium sesquicarbonate). It presents DSI performance data for Chambers Medical located in Hampton, SC. This facility incinerates local medical and municipal solid waste. Chambers Medical has used mechanically-fined trona for HCl and SO2 removal since late 1991.

WESTERN CAN ADA'S coal industry has experienced a serious set-back since 1949, following a pattern well known to its counterpart in the United States. The loss in coal markets in Western Canada has been particularly severe as the discovery of large reserves of oil and natural gas and the subsequent construction of re-fineries and pipelines roughly coincided with the dieselization of both main railways. While the coal industry will have to face a further decline in markets of long standing, others with a large growth potential can be se-cured if present marketing methods are changed where needed and if fundamental and applied research programmes are actively pursued. The energy and chemical potential of Western Canada's coals will eventually find their place in the ever-growing needs of industry and electric power producers. Electric power generation would appear to offer the largest and most immediate market for coal. If the coal industry is to serve this market adequately and gain as much of it as possible, coal operators ? must have a good knowledge of certain characteristics -of the electric utility industry and its fuel requirements. This paper is prepared primarily to set out some of these characteristics, but also discusses other probable markets for coal.

The Bureau of Mines has been investigating deposits of critical and essential minerals in the United States since 1939. The Rush Creek lead-zinc deposit, Mono County, Calif. (fig. 1), was examined by W. T. Benson in July 1944 and again in September 1945 by D. W. Butner, engineers of the Bureau of Mines. From the results of these preliminary examinations, a core-drilling program (fig. 2) was started in August 1946 and continued until November 1946, when work was stopped on account of inclement weather. Field work was again started in May 1947 and completed in June 1947. The drilling program was laid out to develop the horizontal .and vertical extensions of showings exposed in surface pits.

The introduction of 'post' pillar mining at the Strathcona mine represents a new approach to ground support in cut-and-fill applications. The method has also shown significant economic advantages. It is believed that the development of this concept is one of the few examples where rock mechanics principles have successfully been applied in the development of a stoping method. The paper describes the evolution of this method and contains discussions on the theoretical analysis of the technical, operational and economics aspects of the system. Pillar design procedures and field observations on the practical application of theoretical analysis are also outlined.

"Fine coal beneficiation in a dry way is considerably imperative for the efficient utilization and conservation of coal resource in drought regions, especially for China. In this study, a continuous vibrated gas-fluidized bed separator was established and developed based on the results of laboratory batch separation results. The fluidization behavior and the effects of several main parameters including superficial air velocity, vibrational parameters, bed height and separating time were systematically investigated. The results showed that the bed expansion increased linearly with the superficial air velocity and theoretically, higher bed expansion benefited the hindered settling process of fine coal particles. However, larger superficial air velocity would induce intense fluctuation in bed surface and a poor performance of density segregation. The conveying velocity of particles was mainly determined by the vibration angle and a predicted model was established by the nonlinear regression analysis. A theoretical model of bed height distribution was established and this model fitted the measured value well. The beneficiation performance of this separator was evaluated by separating -3+1 mm Wuhai fine coal. The results showed that the probable error, E, is 0.225, indicating a continuous vibrated gas-fluidized bed separator could achieve a satisfactory performance.INTRODUCTIONFine coal beneficiation in a dry way is considerably imperative for the efficient utilization and conservation of coal resource in drought regions, especially for China. Meanwhile, it is also conducive to environment protect and low-carbon, green development of coal sector. In recent years, the increasing academic interest in the field of fine coal dry beneficiation has been aroused in most of big coal countries. In summary, recent processes of fine coal dry beneficiation are, according to their processing principles, mainly classified into two categories: dense medium beneficiation (Dong et al., 2015; Fan, Chen, Zhao, & Luo, 2001; Luo et al., 2008; Macpherson, Iveson, & Galvin, 2011) and improved pneumatic beneficiation (Patil & Parekh, 2011; Yang, Zhao, Luo, Song, & Chen, 2013; Yang, Zhao, Luo, Song, Duan, et al., 2013; Zhao, Zhao, Chen, & Luo, 2015). The former deploys artificial dense medium, such as magnetite powder and fine sand, to form a stable gas-solid suspension with certain density under the function of the upward fluidizing air flow and in some case, the external force field like vibration and magnetic field. Generally, it is believed that the process of air dense medium fluidized bed (ADMFB) is suitable for separation of coarse coal (-50+6 mm) and can't obtain a satisfactory result for fine coal separation (Luo, Chen, & Zhao, 2002; Luo et al., 2008). However, some recent laboratory efforts (Patil & Parekh, 2011; Zhang et al., 2014) attempt to find an improved performance for fine coal beneficiation in ADMFB with some modifications. The point of these works is to use a comparatively shallow bed and finer magnetite powder with appropriate size distribution. It is known that fluidization of finer magnetite powder is prone to arouse adverse fluidization properties such as channeling and slugging. Thus, the external force is introduced to an ADMFB in order to improve the fluidization quality of a magnetite powder bed. Some recent literature on air dense medium magnetically stabilized fluidized beds (Fan et al., 2001; Luo, Zhao, Chen, Fan, & Tao, 2002; Song, Zhao, Luo, & Tang, 2012), air dense medium vibrated fluidized beds (Luo et al., 2008) and Reflux Classifier (Macpherson, Iveson, & Galvin, 2010) reports that the separation efficiency, namely the probably error E value, of dense medium separation of fine coal ranges from 0.066 to 0.07, indicating a good separation performance. Ensaios realizados em laboratório com briquetes industriais confeccionados com estes resíduos demonstraram a potencialidade de utilização destes briquetes autorredutores em processos siderúrgicos via forno elétrico a arco (FEA).

IN this paper I propose to describe a plant which I lately erected for the Mount Stewart Lead and Silver Mining Company of Leadville, New South Wales, Australia. I am indebted to Mr. W. F. Burrow, of the Roads and Bridges Department of New South Wales, for the drawings which I present herewith, he having reduced and assembled them from my working drawings. The works are situated on a sloping hillside, but sufficient fall mas not available to have the furnace as high as desired, and at the same time have a good slag-tip and sufficient depth on the ore-floor to store a supply of ore and flux. The ore is delivered on the ore-floor (which is of the full width of the furnace-building, and extends back into the hill a distance of seventy feet) by two overhead tramways (not shown in the drawings), one on each side. From these the ore-mixture is made up on one side, while it is being taken to the furnace from the other. The fuel also is delivered by these tramways. The fluxes are stored on a floor directly at the back of the boiler and engine room. The boiler is a Cornish one, 6 feet 6 inches in diameter by 25 feet long. Its flue is 3 feet in diameter and does not contain Galloway tubes. The working-pressure is 40 pounds per square inch. The engine is an old-fashioned one, with a cylinder 16 inches in diameter by 30 inches stroke. Both the engine and boiler had been part of the plant of a defunct gold-mining company. They were very extravagant in their consumption of fuel. The blast is supplied by a rotary pressure-blower, of the Baker pattern, made in England. It has a capacity of 60 cubic feet per revolution. The furnace, which has several novel points, is shown in detail in Figs. 1, 2 and 3. The jackets are of cast-iron, and are higher than those generally used. They are different, too, in that the feedwater inlet is through a hand-hole plate near the bottom. This plate is fastened to the jacket by stud-bolts, and is provided with a baffleplate, which prevents the cooling water from impinging against the inner plate. AT a meeting of the American Society for Testing Materials at Atlantic City, June, 1908, Dr.. C. B. Dudley, in his presidential address,' showed the vital necessity of not only making a steel rail as good as in the past, but of making it considerably better in order to meet the present and prospective require¬ments of railroads. Doctor Dudley requested the co-operation of all who from personal experience could give information that would result in bringing about the production of a steel rail that could be relied upon to meet the present requirements. I have had considerable experience in the practical manufacture of steel of almost every grade, during the past 40 years, and I shall suggest changes that will bring about the results desired. Doctor Dudley has had a long experience as chemical and metallurgical expert for the Pennsylvania railroad, but he frankly admits that up to the present time both he and other metallurgical experts lack the practical knowledge of steel-making that is necessary to state correctly the reasons for the unreliability of the steel rails now produced. The necessity is self-evident for more positive practical knowledge on the part of these experts of what is possible and what is impossible regarding the practical manufacturing of steel rails from the ingot to the, finished product. Chemical knowledge in steel-making is far in advance of what it was years ago, and might be said to cover every requirement (in that department) for producing reliable steel. In this study, the QEMSCAN technology is used to acquire quantitative modal, textural, mineral association and liberation data on different products generated from with or without washing, fractionation by size and density using screens and heavy liquids/panning, which has provided significant information on the quality and beneficiability of four categories of low Grade iron ores from Jharkhand-Orissa region. The deposit of low Grade iron ore has been categorized into four categories viz. Grade-I with <45% Fe(t) a) containing shale rich type and b) BHJ rich type; Grade-II with 45-55% Fe(t) and Grade-III with >55% Fe(t) containing conventional flaky, hard, kanga, lateritic, shale and BHJ litho/ore types in varied proportions. Mineralogy is similar across all samples being hematite, martite, goethite, kaolinite and gibbsite. Banded Hematite Jasper has difficult liberation characteristics due to highly compact banded mode of silica mineral occurrence with hematite. In all categories, the grade dilution is by the presence of 1) ?Discrete gangue rich litho types? at lump size and 2) ?Within ore types?. The second type of grade dilution contains coating of gangue phases around the iron ore minerals and different degree of locking of gangue phases within iron ore minerals. Further characterization and beneficiation assessment details are discussed in this paper.

Iron transfer from the pregnant leach solution (PLS) to the electrolyte can have a major economic impact on solvent extraction (SX) operations. High iron transfer will lead to greater operational costs, due to increased reagent consumption through electrolyte bleed and make up, or increased power costs due to decreased electrowinning current efficiency. Bioleaching of low-grade copper sulfide ore from the Kennecott Utah Copper Mine was investigated in a large scale piloting program including SX and electrowinning. Plant data and lab test work conducted throughout the course of operation, show that the unique containing PLS high ferric iron with high pH can lead to lower Cu: Fe selectivity than is typically seen in traditional copper SX operations. The impact of high ferric iron on the plant operation, and methods to reduce iron transfer will be discussed. Special considerations need to be taken for plant operating conditions and selection of SX reagents (including both extractant and aromatic content of diluent) based on the feed PLS characteristics.

This paper considers the potential water quality impacts of future energy scenarios which project an approximate doubling of coal utilization from 1975 to 1985. The major impacts estimated for coal extraction are related to effluents from unregulated activities (reclaimed areas prior to stable vegetation) and pollutants (e.g., metals and ammonia). Where applicable, the EPA effluent guidelines to be in effect by 1983 reduce the impact of individual sources to low levels. For example, total suspended solids and acidic discharges are to be regulated to levels generally below recommended water quality standards for receiving streams. However, implementation of these guidelines, particularly for coal extraction, has not been demonstrated on a wide scale. Water quality is not expected to be a major constraining factor for increasing capacity of coal fired utility and industrial boilers. Water quality control has not been demonstrated on a commercial scale for coal conversion to synfuels, but adequate control technologies appear to be feasible.

"This paper details the events leading up to a slope failure that occurred at Kalgoorlie Consolidated Gold Mines (KCGM) and the remediation method executed using rope access specialists.n January 2016, KCGM Fimiston Pit experienced a double bench wall failure where approximately 80 000 t of material fell from the wall that blocked access to a ramp and caused minor damage to equipment.The event was triggered by heavy rainfall and occurred along unfavourable eastward dipping structures that lead into weaker shale/porphyry bands, which in turn left more material on the face. A remediation plan was formulated that would allow for the continuation of open pit operations while a full geotechnical assessment of the failure area could be conducted. This was accomplished by means of rope access specialists who abseiled down the wall and blasted off the remaining overhang using a portable drill rig and prepackaged explosives.This paper provides a brief overview of the KCGM operations, how the instability was identified and monitored, details of the failure event, outcomes of the geotechnical assessment and details on the remediation work.Citation:Graf, C and Sullivan, R, 2016. Relative enthalpies of high-purity disodium hexatitanate (Na2Ti6013) were measured at the Bureau of Mines to provide new thermodynamic data needed to advance the technology of materials. Measurements from 298.15 to 1,478 K were made by drop calorimetry with a copper block. Tabulated values are listed for the standard relative enthalpy, heat capacity, en-tropy, and Gibbs energy function between 298.15 and 1,500 K. Enthalpy data are also given in equation form and are combined with thermodynamic data from the literature to derive values of standard enthalpies of formation, Gibbs energies of formation, and logarithms of the equilibrium constants of formation. Similar calculations were made for the reaction of Na20 with Ti02.

Mengzi Mining and Metallurgy Co, Ltd (MMMC) polymetallic ore contains recoverable amounts of tin, lead, zinc, pyrite and other valuable minerals. With the change in orebody, the run-of-mine (ROM) ore changed from lead zinc rich ore to tin rich ore, where the current ROM ore contains 0.45–1.25 per cent tin, 20–25 per cent sulfur, and 0.20–0.35 per cent copper. The previous processing flow sheet was designed to recover lead zinc rich ore and it is clearly not suitable for recovery of the current tin rich ore, where the tin was already overground and tin recovery was only 50.19 per cent. The Mengzi Mining Company has recently modified the concentrator circuit by incorporating rod mill and high efficient Derrick fine screen. As a result of the improved classification efficiency, the overgrinding of the tin ore was minimised and the recovery of tin was improved by 20.71 per cent, ie from 50.19–70.90 per cent.
