Proper illumination is critical to a miner?s ability to detect hazards in underground mines. Moving hazards are often located in the miner?s peripheral field-of-view, while slip/trip/ fall hazards are often located in the forward field-of-view. The objective of the research described in this paper was to determine if light-emitting diodes (LEDs) improve visual performance as compared to traditional incandescent (INC) cap lamps. The research presented focuses on comparative studies of a National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) prototype LED, a commercial LED and an INC camp lamp. Thirty subjects participated in these studies, with ten subjects in each of the following age groups: 18 to 25 years, 40 to 50 years and 51+ years old. Visual per­formance was quantified by the subjects? speed and accuracy in detecting hazards, while visual performance for disability glare was quantified by the use of contrast sensitivity tests. Results suggest that LEDs with a visible spectrum containing a higher concentration of the shorter wavelengths can enable visual performance improvements with respect to disability glare, the detection of moving hazards in the peripheral field-of-view and the detection of floor hazards in the forward field-of-view. The NIOSH prototype LED cap lamp provided the best visual performance improvements for the older age groups in every test.

As a direct result of the second World War, consumption of nickel in the United States has increased to such an extent that it has been considered timely to investigate undeveloped deposits of the nickel minerals. Funds were made available to the Bureau of lines in 1941 to investigate the extent, occurrence, and quality of nickel ores in the Mirror Harbor area. The Federal Geological Survey mapped' and studied the area during the summer of 1941 and Robert S. Sanford, an engineer of the Bureau of lines, made a preliminary examination in June 1942. A contract for drilling the deposits under the direction of the author was let in July 1942.

"Data from samples taken during rotary air blast and reverse circulation drilling are crucial to properly assessing economics of mineral deposits in the case of exploratory work, and are equally critical in accurately delineating ore and waste in execution of mine operation plans. Past studies of sampling procedures, comparing results of conventional splitting to more precise extraction of representative samples, illustrate the significant degree of error frequently encountered. Economic impact of error in mine blast hole sampling work can be shown to result in theoretical losses valued at millions of dollars annually in operating large scale mining projects. Results of past drill sampling studies are reviewed.Drill sampling technique can be improved by collecting coarse and fine particles together and extracting samples for assay from the complete flow of rock and dust simultaneously. This can be accomplished with a collection unit attached to the drill stem through which all except a small proportion of extreme fines are retained. The bulk mass can be static sampled as flow takes place through the collector when size reduction is not required. Alternately, collected mass with fines and coarse intermingled can be processed for increased accuracy through size reduction to obtain proportional samples."

"The SGS carbon-in-pulp (CIP) / carbon-in-leach (CIL) model was used to evaluate and optimize the carbon circuit at Alamos Gold’s Young-Davidson Mine. Plants samples (pulp and carbon) were tested in a series of small scale batch experiments to determine rates of gold leaching and adsorption on carbon from a combined flotation concentrate/tailing product. The testwork data, along with existing plant data were then used to model the performance of the existing CIL plant and optimize the circuit to improve performance and overall recovery. The primary purpose of the modelling exercise was to determine the most cost effective way to lower solution losses at the plant. The modelling was also used to learn how the various parameters in the CIL circuit affect solution losses and the gold inventory tied up on the carbon. This resulted in recommendations for minor changes in the CIL flowsheet, which were successfully implemented in the plant. The approach, results and plant changes are presented.INTRODUCTION This paper presents the details from testwork conducted on samples from Alamos Gold’s Young- Davidson gold mine which is located near the town of Matachewan, approximately 60 km west of Kirkland Lake in Northern Ontario, within the southwestern part of the Abitibi Greenstone Belt. The objective of the test program (completed by SGS Canada in 2013) was to investigate and model the combined flotation concentrate / tailing carbon-in-leach (CIL) circuit and suggest ways to improve gold recovery. The metallurgical test program included mineralogy, rheology, and carbon modelling testwork. Plant information was provided during the test program and used in the optimization process. Upon completion of the testwork, plant changes were recommended and implemented at site (October 2014). Plant results from 2014 to 2017 confirmed the modelling results."

THE CHAIRMAN (WILLIAM KELLY, Vulcan, Mich.).-Some 8 or 9 years ago I was at Daiquiri, only a. few miles east of Firmeza, where there are deposits of iron ore of the same general character. There is a great conical hill, perhaps 800 or 1,000 ft. in height and the ore deposit appears to be somewhat in a canoe shape on one side of the hill. The mining has been done by quarrying the ore in benches. These are called levels and to go to the 10th level it was necessary to take mules and ride to the top of the hill, which was to me an upside down arrangement of numbering levels and a novel method of entering and viewing a mine. A little copper ore can be seen in places, and not being a geologist I thought the deposit might possibly be a gossan, but none of the geologists who have written on the subject approve of this hypothesis and the great question seems to be what part, if any, the limestones have played in the origin of ore; whether these deposits are replacements of limestone and whether they are contact ,deposits between the limestone and the other rocks. Examinations have been made by many eminent geologists and the problem has been discussed vigorously on both sides. The deposits are exceedingly interesting from a commercial standpoint and although they have been studied for a number off years the origin of the ore is still a difficult and somewhat controversial question. J. T. SINGEWALD, JR., Baltimore, Md.-I have had the privilege of visiting these deposits and have been very much interested in this paper, of Dr. Roesler's; having been on the ground, I can easily appreciate the difficulties under which he labored in attempting to work out the geology of that region, and he certainly deserves considerable credit for the way in which he has deciphered the geological relations of the Firmeza district. There are several points in his paper 1 ,would like to discuss; first, in regard to the geological interpretations. His differs from previous interpretations in the relative age of the diorite and the granite, but you will note that Prof. Lindgren suggests the probability. that those two rocks are very closely of the same age, and Prof. Kemp actually suggests, although he does not-accept the idea, that the granite is probably later than the diorite, so that there seems to be no particular reason

Today, the advance rate of underground roadway development by drill and blast operation is limited by the need to ventilate the toxic blast fumes after each cycle. In deep mines this usually is only possible during shift changes when the related mine sections are free of persons. This results in roadway development advance rates of 4 m per shift, or 12 m per day. For long roadways this is a limiting factor in mining development in deep mines. Companies like EPIROC, KOMATSU, ROBBINS and SANDVIK are making serious R&D efforts to disc-cutting mobile miners to overcome this bottleneck. However, today, the achieved advance rates are less than 12 m per day in hard rock. If we achieve full robotisation and/or teleoperation from a safe place for drill and blast operation of an underground roadway development section, we could eliminate this bottleneck. Poisonous blasting fumes do not affect robots and machines as long as these fumes do not create aggressive acids. If we can keep the blast fumes isolated in the roadway development section for the shift until the next ventilation opportunity (eg shift change or designated ventilation times), we can do the drill and blast cycle more often in a shift, which will significantly speed up the advance rate. This requires robotisation of all work steps in the section: surveying, drilling, charging of explosives, blasting, loading and transporting material, roof support, installation of infrastructure etc. Also, cache storage for the material is needed. Special care for the ventilation system to keep the blasting fumes under control in the section is necessary. The paper discusses the aspects needed to achieve this robotisation and the related technical and operational tasks.

JIGGING is the stratification of a mass of solid particles in upward pulsations of water or in alternating upward and downward pulsations. The stratification usually is effected in a rectangular open-top container having a perforated bottom through which the pulsations of water are applied to the materials to be separated; in separating coal, to a mass of coal and refuse. Jigging usually is a continuous process involving three steps: (1) the reception of the raw coal, (2) the stratification of the coal and refuse so that the refuse settles to the screen plate, and (3) the overflow of the cleaned coal and the withdrawal of the refuse collected on the screen. The jig is the most universal washer ever devised. It is handling in practice a wide range of closely sized coals and ores, mixed sizes of coal from 8-in. to 0 through ¾ -in. to 0, and mixed sizes of ores down to 7/32-in. to 0 and even smaller. It is treating materials ranging in specific gravity from that of gold at 19 to that of coal at 1.30. It is handling feeds in which the proportions of high-gravity materials range from 90 per cent or higher, as for some iron ores, to 10 per cent or less for some coals. It is handling feeds containing all shapes of particles-round, rectangular, and , flat. It is handling simple separation problems and difficult separation problems. Thus, it is an almost universal separating device. One might add that it has been one of the most misunderstood types of washers, from both a theoretical and a practical point of view. Although considerable progress has been made in coal jigging in the past 10 years, the jig probably has more unexplored possibilities than any other type of washer. In this chapter the object has been to treat the jigging process in a practical manner and to give information that will help the reader to improve his particular operation. Inasmuch as performance data from operating plants would contribute little of value, none has been given. Instead, the emphasis is upon jigging principles as a foundation for attacking the problems that arise. These principles are in reality tentative conclusions from research in the field of jigging during the past 10 years and most of this chapter should be regarded as a progress report on an investigation still under way. "A hybrid discrete-continuum numerical scheme is developed to study the behavior of hydraulic fractures crossing natural fractures. The fully coupled hybrid scheme utilizes a discrete element model for a core domain, within which the hydraulic fracture propagates and interacts with natural fractures, and a surrounding continuum domain to better approximate boundary effects. The results show that the behavior of hydraulic fractures crossing natural fractures is affected by a combination of factors. Nevertheless, three fundamental crossing scenarios can be identified from all of the simulations: no crossing, partial crossing, and direct crossing. Each crossing scenario has a distinct injection pressure history which may suggest guidelines for interpreting field hydraulic fracture injection data. Additionally, the capability for these models to generate synthetic microseismicity makes them appealing for the integration of microseismic field data with the reservoir geomechanics for ultimately providing a practical engineering tool for improvement of well completion and stimulation. The model is capable of examining and verifying four different shear deformation mechanisms associated with a propagating hydraulic fracture. The natural fracture can fail solely due to the stress perturbation of the passing hydraulic fracture or it can fail due to a combination of stress and pore pressure changes across different types of interaction scenarios. The simulations also illustrate that the level of fracturing complexity increases as the number and extent of the natural fractures increase. INTRODUCTIONAlthough hydraulic fracturing technique has been applied extensively as a reservoir stimulation technique in the oil and gas industry for over 60 years (Economides & Nolte, 2000), it is one of the key factors promoting the shale gas boom in the past decade (King, 2010; International Energy Agency, 2014). The hydraulic fracturing of shales can be differentiated from hydraulic fracturing of conventional reservoirs by the fact that shale formations often have a pre-existing discrete fracture networks which greatly impact the hydraulic fracture propagation. Based upon field production data as well as microseismic observations, it is believed that so called “fracture complexity” may result from interactions between a created hydraulic fracture and pre-existing natural fractures and planes of weakness (Warpinski, 2009; Maxwell & Cipolla, 2011)."

This report describes the effects of water shortage on Arizona's mineral industries. The information presented was obtained in interviews with company representatives. Operations covered included all State metal mines using substantial quantities of water and all concentrators and smelters. Also included in the survey were 8 operations in the nonmetallic group; 22 in the plating, metal-fabricating, and metal-forming categories; 1 public-utility power company; and 6 water companies. The extent of the water shortage in Arizona is reflected in mineral- industry water-use practices, in the high cost and low quality of water used at many operations, and in the stringency of State control of well drilling and pumping. Many mineral-industry operations are among those users most seriously affected by the uneven water supply.

Hydrocyclones are widely used in wet mineral classification applications and can be notoriously prone to wear. The methods currently used for quantifying hydrocyclone wear profiles are mostly twodimensional. In this paper it was attempted to quantify and monitor wear in three-dimensions, using a micro-CT scanner (Nikon XTH 225 ST). Hydrocyclone wear and, more specifically, spigot wear was investigated on a Multotec HC250 (Dc 250 mm, barrel diameter) hydrocyclone. The hydrocyclone is lined by a vulcanised natural rubber compound within a metal shell, with a thermosetting polyurethane spigot and vortex finder. Tests were conducted on the hydrocyclone in a pilot-scale recirculating test setup. The wear rate of the spigot was quantified by measuring the volume change within the spigot over 122 days in operation, using the micro-CT scanner. After 122 days in operation (recirculating feed materials) the wear in the hydrocyclone led to only a 13.67% loss of spigot volume. The relatively low wear rate could be related to the fact that material recirculation led to particle smoothing and a reduction in size, thereby decreasing the wear rate. This also shows the enormous influence that particle shape and size have on wear. The research was conducted with the support of Multotec, NECSA and the University of Pretoria. Materiais sustentáveis estão sendo investigados para substituir os materiais sintéticos, os compósitos com matriz polimérica têm sido aplicados em componentes, tais como capacetes e blindagem para os quais a resistência em um requisito importante. O presente trabalho avalia a classificação energética de impacto Charpy e Izod da matriz de epóxi compósitos DGEBA / TETA, reforçado com até 30% em volume de fibras de malva contínuas e alinhadas (Urena Lobata, L). Os testes de impacto foram realizados em amostras padronizadas em matriz de epoxi obtidas por aplicação de pressão em molde com cura a temperatura ambiente por 24 horas. Os resultados mostraram aumento significativo da energia de impacto com a fracção de fibras incorporadas de malva. A superfície de fratura foi analisada por microscopia eletrônica de varredura, SEM. O desempenho das amostras incorporados com 30% de fibras, sofreu apenas ruptura parcial devido a dificuldades impostas ao quebrar-se as fibras, e, consequentemente, a natureza dos quais fendas tendem a propagar na interface entre a matriz de fibra / resina epóxi, o que ajuda a absorver a energia do impacto.

Late in 1944 a group of petroleum and coal technologists was organized in Washington under the sponsorship of the Petroleum Administration for War and the U. S. Bureau of Mines. This group, known as the Technical Oil Mission, was placed under the authority of the Technical Industrial Intelligence Committee of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, which was then promoting the organization of other missions to be sent to Germany to obtain technical information regarding various industries in that country. The objective of the Tehnical oil Mission was to obtain technical data on German production of synthetic oil from coal and all other commercial practices and research projects connected with the oil industry. The primary purpose was to obtain such data as were immediately essential to assist the war against Germany and Japan, with secondary emphasis on technical information that would assist American industry after the end of the war. since oil-production facilities in Germany and the occupied countries controlled by Germany were the top targets for strategic bombing, the Technical Oil Mission was the first group under the Technical Induslrial Intelligence Com,mittee to enter Germany. A few members of the group flew to London in February 1945 and the majority of the remainder followed in March. In London they were joined by an equal number of British investigators and the combined mission was then sent into Germany under the authority of the Combined Intelligence Objectives Subcommittee (CIOS). A summary of the more important information gained by this combined British and American mission is presented below. German Oil Production The oil available to Germany, both natural and synthetic, and including production from occupied countries, reached a peak in late 1943 and early 1944 Production at this time was at the rate of 1,200,000 metric tons Per month, equivalent to 100,000,000 bbl. per year, or about 7 per cent of the wartime production in the United States. Of this production, jo per cent was crude oil from Romania and Hungary, 12 Per cent was crude oil from Germany itself, including Austria, 9 per cent cumprised coal-carbonization products, that is, tar and light oil, and only the remaining 29 per cent was synthetic liquid fuel made from coal or tar. Synthetic liquid fuel made in Germany was equivalent therefore to less than 2 per cent of wartime production of crude oil in the United States. The success of the strategic bombing campaign against German oil-production facilities is demonstrated by the fact that by September 1944 the Ploesti fields of Romania and much of the syrlthetic oil production had been eliminated, so that the amount of oil available to the German war machine was only 25 per Cent of the peak qualltity mentioned above. "IntroductionON THE LAST DAY of December, 1951, a half-century of steel production was completed in the open hearth department of Dominion Iron & Steel, Limited, in Sydney, Nova Scotia.During that period, almost every known variation of basic steel making practice was used in working out a steel making process which would overcome the difficult metallurgical problems imposed by the use of Cape Breton coal and Wabana ore.This paper is presented as a brief review of these steel making practices, setting forth the fundamental metallurgical factors involved in their success or failure.Establishing the IndustryThe story of steel production at Sydney is closely interwoven with that of coal. The steel industry owes its inception to a desire on the part of the Dominion Coal Company, which was incorporated in 1893, to improve its marketing position by increasing sales of slack coal and providing a year-round demand for its product. Accordingly, the Dominion Iron and Steel Company, Limited, was incorporated on March 30th, 1899, with Mr. H. M. Whitney -who was President of the Dominion Coal Company -as its first President. The new Company was given powers to manufacture and process iron and steel, and to mine all minerals, including coal.A strong inducement to the industry was the bounty offered by the Dominion Government for the production of both iron and steel."

A program with the objective of developing a fast, accurate instrumental method of analyzing mine dust for incombustible content has been underway in the Bureau of Mines for several years. Several prototype instruments making use of a gamma-ray backscatter technique have resulted. Although extensive laboratory testing has shown that these instruments are accurate under laboratory conditions, only extensive field testing will prove their ultimate practicality and usefulness. This report shows that under most conditions these devices are at least as accurate as the volumetric method and much faster in use. Other data obtained during the same study concerning mine dust are presented; these concern moisture content, sample bulk density distribution, and some particle size distribution information.

When the United States entered the war it was clear that every ship would be needed and that the number available for importing minerals would be small. Hence a quick and thorough survey of domestic resources was necessary. . Throughout the war the scope and volume of the war-minerals work increased until it covered practically every mineral that was known t.o be or was liable to be in short supply.

In 1986, Gold Fields began negotiations with a large Nevada electrical power utility to supply power for its Chimney Creek Mine In northern Nevada. After the long negotiations reached an impass over various costs associated with the power line, a decision was made by Gold Fields to generate its own power. Self-generation is not uncommon overseas, but it is rare for any but very large or very small operations in the United States. Surprisingly, under certain conditions a mine can generate its own power profitably and Gold Fields has found that the associated operating and maintenance problems are minimal. The following report details what factors went into this decision and how it works. Hopefully, it can serve as a guideline for those who may find themselves in a similar position.

"A comprehensive froth model has been derived from first principles. It is based on predicting the kinetics of film thinning in the presence of particles of varying sizes and surface hydrophobicity. According to the Reynolds lubrication theory, the thinning of a horizontal film is driven by the excess film pressure (p), which is determined by the capillary pressure (pc) and the disjoining pressure (II). In the presence of particles, macroscopic capillary pressure (pc) is affected by the local capillary pressure (pc,local) in the vicinity of a particle and the number of particles in the film (N1,film), which in turn vary with the hydrophobicity and size of the particles. The Reynolds equation corrected for pc,local and N1,film is then used to predict the time (or froth height) at which a film is thinned to a critical rupture thickness (hcr), which in turn can be predicted using the Vrij’s capillary wave model (1966) after a modification to incorporate the contributions from hydrophobic disjoining pressure (IIhp). The model can predict bubble coarsening represented by the bubble size ratio between the top (d2,t) and bottom (d2,b) of a froth as functions of particle size and hydrophobicity, ? -potentials, frother dosages, froth height, gas flow rate, salt concentration, etc. The model predictions have been verified in experiments.INTRODUCTIONFroth flotation is regarded the best available technology today for upgrading minerals and coal fines. In the pulp phase of a flotation cell, air bubbles collect hydrophobic particles dispersed in it and rise to enter the froth phase on the top. Once in a froth phase, the bubbles coalesce with each other and become larger, resulting in a decreased bubble surface area. Under conditions of limited surface area, less hydrophobic particles drop off the bubble surface and return to the pulp phase. Thus, bubble coarsening provides a useful mechanism of increasing product grades. On the other hand, uncontrolled coarsening results in a decrease in bubble carrying capacity and hence throughput."
