Some of the members will probably ask themselves what close relationship exists between hydro-metallurgy and a wet scrubber, but we are sure that as soon as deeper thought is given to the matter it will be realised how vital scrubbing, operations are in metallurgical plants. In ordinary metallurgical installations or pyro-metallurgical processes ore concentrates are first of all shifted from place to place and dust is created. In other cases the ores or concentrates are crushed or dried or roasted, and in each one of these operations dust and fumes, are created. All suspended particles and fumes originating from the abovementioned conditions not only, in many instances, provide health hazards which disrupt production and endanger the personnel in the plant, but also are the source of economic losses through extra maintenance and wear to moving machinery due to abrasion and corrosion. Further losses are incurred by the waste of fine, very often valuable, components. The Party who once said that in several metallurgical plants the bulk of the profits was discharged into the atmosphere by the stack wasn't stretching the truth. There is a place in Africa where a gold producing concern used to lose over 5 oz. of fine gold per day out of a total production of 3000 oz. per month. In another instance, copper concentrate going as high as 80% Cu was discharged into the atmosphere at the rate of 4 tons per day. Realising the value of removing and collecting solids and fumes created in metallurgical plants, a thorough study was made of the available plant and equipment offered on the market. Some units were found very efficient, but very expensive; some others also very efficient but with temperature and maintenance limitations. Some others were also efficient but prohibitive from the point of running costs.

"High-speed motion pictures are an invaluable resource for blasting analysis. Whether processed by the human eye or a computer, this imagery can provide important insight into a blast and its effects.While certainly popular, traditional high-speed film cameras hamper this process. Instant feedback is not available since film requires developing and, relevant in the case of automated analysis, film isnot immediately compatible with a computer. With these facts in mind, a new high-speed video camera system, the SVCSOO, has been developed. The SVC500 combines the capabilities of a high-speed film camera, the convenience of a solid-state digital video camcorder, and the computing power of a ‘486 PC to provide a complete, standalone platform for high-speed image acquisition and analysis. This paper will describe the design, features, and use of the SVCSOO andcompare these with the analogous aspects of film cameras."

The Bureau of Mines has investigated the availability of copper from 272 deposits in market economy countries. The deposits studied have demonstrated resources totaling 413 million metric tons of contained copper and account for more than 90 pct of the reserve base for market economy countries. Using data gathered as part of its Minerals Availability Program, the Bureau performed geologic, engineering, and economic evaluations in order to determine the copper production potential of each deposit. At the 1981 copper market price of $0.85/lb, the deposits studied could economically produce an estimated 88 million metric tons of copper (allowing for profit computed at a 15-pct rate of return), primarily from mines operating at the time of the study (1981). At this price, producing mines in market economy countries could economically produce only 2.1 million metric tons of refined copper per year. However, actual 1981 production was 6.2 million metric tons, indicating that many mines continued to operate even though they were unable to cover all production costs. For U.S. producing mines, the estimated average cost of production per pound (including profit at a 15-pct rate of return) was $0.15 higher than the average cost in other market economy countries.

Froth flotation is a physico-chemical separation process that takes place in two phases; pulp and froth phase. It is widely recognised as a complex process, due to the range of interactions present within the system. Of critical importance is the role of the froth phase within the system. The pulp kinetics governs the maximum potential recovery within a flotation cell, while the froth phase governs the selectivity via the froth?s stability. Higher froth stability improves recovery at the expense of grade, and lower froth stability improves selectivity. It is well known that the two major factors affecting froth stability are attached particles and solution chemistry. This paper looks at a flotation bank at different froth depth and frother concentrations. The air recovery to the concentrate is determined at each condition and relates the effect of the operating conditions on froth stability and transport to the amount of solids that are recovered to the froth and concentrate by true flotation. The results presented show that, for a given process objective, which in this case was a consistent mass pull profile, depending on the operating conditions, solids recovery in the pulp is affected by the air rate required to maintain the target mass pull. To a smaller extent, the changes in the pulp composition affect down-stream pulp recovery. The variation in solids recovered into the froth drives the froth stability at the start of the flotation bank, while the frother drives the froth stability at the end of the bank. The performance in between these two extreme conditions arises from an interaction of these two effects. The consequences of these interactions can give rise to counter-intuitive responses that can confound efforts to optimise the performance of the bank.

For certain applications, coarse titanium nitride (TiN) precipitates can be deleterious for the final properties of the material. Hence, in order to better understand the mechanisms involved in the generation of these precipitates, a thorough characterization of the particles observed in steels with different titanium and nitrogen content was carried out. Samples from liquid steel (tundish), continuous casting billets and final product were evaluated using an Automatic Particle Analyzer (APA) coupled to a Scanning Electronic Microscope (SEM). The location, frequency, size distribution and composition of the different particles observed were assessed. While only few TiN precipitates were observed in liquid steel samples, the density of this type of particle significantly increased in the continuous casting billets samples. Particles ranging from 1 to 10 µm were mainly found in the interdendritic zones of the as-cast structure. The density of TiN particles observed in these samples did not change after re-heating and rolling operations. A model to predict TiN precipitation during solidification was developed. A reasonable agreement was found between model results and measured data. Results of this analysis confirmed that the precipitated fraction of TiN increases as the product of steel Ti and N contents rises.

Mineral processing plants, in general, consist of comminution and separation circuits. Rougher flotation is considered as the heart of the separation circuit with concentrate grade and mineral recovery being the key productivity and quality parameters that affect the downstream operations and profitability. Online prediction of these parameters can help improve process performance in real-time. Past efforts to predict flotation cell performance have focused on building physics-based or machinelearning (ML) based models. Although physics-based models are popular in process design applications, ML models are more appropriate for online monitoring, control and optimisation due to their lower computational requirements. Deep learning (DL) is gaining prominence nowadays for application in industrial operations where a large amount of data is available. We have developed a DL model based on long short-term memory (LSTM) neural networks to forecast the two key performance indicators (KPIs), namely, mineral recovery and concentrate grade in a mineral processing plant. Rougher feed characteristics such as mineral grade and particle size distribution, upstream measurable disturbances such as throughput of the comminution circuit and pulp density, and control variables such as aeration rate, pH, and collector addition rate are considered as explanatory variables to train the model. The model was tested with data from an industrial mineral processing plant. For real-time dynamic predictions, the trained model appropriately accounts for mismatch in measurement frequency of real-time process data and off-line laboratory analysis data. Such a time series model can be used as a state observer in model predictive control techniques for optimal control of unit operations in a mineral processing plant. Nos dias contemporâneos, houve uma evolução do armamento utilizado e há uma tentativa dos centros de defesa e balística de acompanhar essa evolução no desenvolvimento de blindagens cada vez mais eficientes. Essa eficiência passa tanto na leveza do material quanto na sua capacidade de proteção. Vivemos também nos dias atuais uma preocupação com questões ambientais e energéticas e é justamente, envolto nesse cenário que pesquisas relacionadas à utilização de fibras naturais (FNL’S), tem se tornado cada vez mais relevantes. Desta forma, o objetivo deste trabalho é avaliar o desempenho individual de compósitos de matriz poliéster reforçados com fibras de sisal, quando submetidos ao impacto balístico de munição com calibre de 7,62 mm. Neste trabalho foram testados compósitos reforçados com 20% e 30% em volume de fibras de sisal. Com um auxílio de um radar Doppler, foram registradas as velocidades inicial (de impacto) e residual (após a perfuração do impacto). De posse desses dados foi possível calcular à energia cinética absorvida pelo compósito e estimar à velocidade limite do projétil que essa blindagem é capaz de suportar. Os resultados após alguns tratamentos estatísticos demonstraram que o compósito em questão tem resultados similares à outras blindagens reforçadas com FNL’S, representando mais uma opção de blindagem moderna.

SPEED-UP of production of crude oil and its products, accompanied by rising prices and the organization of the industry on a war basis, featured the economic aspects of petroleum in 1941. Early in the year American tankers were urgently requested by the British to replace losses and offset slower transit under convoy. Some forty American owned tankers were first assigned to Britain and an additional forty-odd ships were transferred during the summer. This threatened to reduce our transportation facilities from Gulf ports to the Eastern seaboard below requirements, especially should sinkings have increased and the British needed more ships. Co-ordinator Ickes began preparations for restricting gasoline consumption in the Eastern district and plans were formulated for the construction of an emergency trunk pipe line from Texas to New York and Philadelphia refining centers, and for a gigantic tanker-building program. Sales of new oil-heating units in the East practically ceased. The companies were urged to transport as much oil as possible by tank car and by October 140,000 barrels of oil per day were reaching the East Coast district by rail, sufficient to meet 8 per cent of total requirements. But British sinkings from July through October decreased 63 per cent compared with the four months ended June 30, Britain began the return of tankers, the construction plans were dropped, and the threatened shortage was thus averted.

The environmental status of underground mining operations is critical to the health and safety of the miners; particularly in a large mine, the multitude of interacting parameters that can favorably or adversely affect the environ-mental status makes the manpower requirement of the routine checking of specific areas and conditions a formidable one. While the concept of environmental monitoring for miners has been considered for some time, until recently the availability of sensors to reliably measure the parameters of interest severely limited the utility of such systems. The status of sensors for mine use and the evaluation of environmental monitoring systems is reviewed.

"This paper presents results of ongoing research being carried out at the University of New South Wales into improved methods for estimating rock mass strength. In this paper the rock mass strength of Hawkesbury Sandstone is assessed. An estimate is first made based on an extensive database of intact rock strength data being collated by the author and the assumption that the rock mass strength can be determined following the GSI approach. The resulting strength envelope is then compared with nine documented case studies where stress induced failure has occurred in tunnels excavated within Hawkesbury Sandstone. The case studies cover a range of conditions:• construction dates from 1880s to 2006• spans from 3.2 to 12.5 m• depths from 17 to 124 m• excavation methods of drill & blast, roadheader and TBM.Finite element modelling is used to assess the likely magnitudes of the stresses present at the time of failure. The finite element models are interrogated to provide the values of major and minor principal stresses in and around the mapped failure zone. Failure and stable points are then compared to the rock mass strength envelope(s) of Hawkesbury Sandstone derived using the Hoek-Brown criterion and spalling criteria. The Hoek-Brown rock mass strength envelope differentiates between the ‘failed’ and ‘stable’ zones remarkably well.INTRODUCTIONStress induced failures of rock masses are fortunately rare in civil tunnelling. However, when they occur they provide an opportunity to calibrate an assumed rock mass strength criterion. This paper compares an estimate of rock mass strength for the Hawkesbury Sandstone with the following cases where stress induced failure occurred in tunnels excavated within Hawkesbury Sandstone.• Cataract & Devines Tunnels of the Upper Canal (Upper Nepean Scheme)• Malabar Outfall Tunnel• Sydney liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) Storage Cavern• Northside Storage Tunnel• Cross City Tunnel• Lane Cove TunnelTwo-dimensional finite element modelling is used to assess the likely magnitudes of the stresses present at the time of the failures. The objective of this work is to investigate the inadequacies of current CFD based methodologies of model development for predicting combustion behavior of pulverized coal in furnaces. In the present paper, a steady state CFD model was used for in-depth analysis of pulverized coal combustion. The model accounts for turbulence, coal combustion, convective and radiative heat transfer and motion of coal particles. It also uses coal combustion models to account for important processes such as devolatilization, combustion of char and the evolution of fuel nitrogen during coal combustion. The model predicts fluid flow, heat transfer, progress of combustion and pollutant formation (NOx, etc.). The model uses several parameters, which need to be tuned with experimental data, which is not only limited in quantity but also insufficient in detail. Various existing methodologies like part calibration method for tuning of the parameters are discussed. In the present work, the parameters associated with coal combustion models were tuned and validated with published data obtained from an experimental furnace using one such part calibration methodology. The results clearly show that the model predictions differed with the experimental data not only quantitatively but also qualitatively. These discrepancies were attributed to part calibration methodology. A detailed parametric study was carried out to demonstrate the importance of parameters from various classes, namely, combustion kinetics, heat transfer, process and geometry parameters, and CFD model parameters. This investigation clearly indicates that parameters from different classes have significant effect on combustion behavior. The discrepancies in current methodology are discussed and a need for comprehensive methodology is highlighted. (written discussion ?).-Firebricks intended for, the same purpose, but supplied by different manufacturers, may be of entirely different clays, contain different proportions of flint, calcined and plastic clays; the particles may vary widely in size; the water used to make the brick will vary; the pressure in molding will vary, depend-ing on whether the brick is hand made or power pressed; and the degree of burning in the same kiln will differ. These variables affect the melting point and the strength of the brick when heated. An important property, of a firebrick is its ability to resist heat and, at the same time, weight or load without serious deformation. The soft-ening point and the melting point of a firebrick may be several hundred degrees apart, and two bricks may show considerable difference in their softening points, but the melting points may be approximately the same. Bricks are not usually employed at temperatures close to their melting points. If they must withstand very high temperatures, the firebrick is discarded and a brick of more refractory material is used. Under these conditions' it is doubtful whether the determination of the melting point of a brick has much practical value. If the determination of the melting point is necessary, the test should he made on a portion of the original brick and not on a specially prepared sample. A small triangular pyramid with a base about 1 1/2 in. and 3 in. high can be sawed from the corner of the brick with a thin-bladed car-borundum wheel, without injuring or destroying the size of particles, the bond, or degree of burning of the original brick. This specimen can then he compared with standard Seger cones or tested by any other method desired.

"Deep mixing methods can be used economically for the construction of cut-off or excavation support walls where other systems such as traditional soldier beams and lagging walls would yie ld unsatisfactory performance, where the installation of vibrated or driven sheet piles could cause vibration induced settlements and where concrete diaphragm walls would be time consuming and expensive. The new CSM method can largely replace the more conventional single or multiple auger methods of soil mixing or jet grouting. The cutter tool is similar to a cutter used in diaphragm walls or cut-off walls and is operated with a Kelly mounted on a drill rig. With this system much deeper walls can be installed and even hard soil layers can be penetrated. CONVENTIONAL SOIL MIXINGIn 1962 Norman Liver patented an auger-based soil mixing technique that has become the basis for the world's current technology.The deep mixing method (DMM), as it is known today, is an in situ soil treatment and improvement technology where the soil is blended with binders and/or other materials that are introduced in a slurry or dry form.Typically one or more hollow, rotating mixing shafts tipped with some type of cutting tool are mounted vertically to the mast of a base carrier and are driven into the ground by hydraulic or electrically powered rotary heads. The shafts above the cutting tool may be further equipped with discontinuous auger flights and/or mixing paddles. The binder is injected through the hollow shafts to nozzles located near the cutting tool where it is mixed with the ground to form columns of treated soil.Individual column diameters range from 0,6m to 1,5m and may extend to 40 m in depth. They can be arranged individually or in contiguous or secant patterns to produce a wide range of treated soil structures on both land and marine projects. Typical configurations are: Single elements, rows of overlapping (secant) elements, grids, lattices and blocks (Fig. 1 )."

This paper is intended to call attention to the manifold uses of limestone in industry; to indicate the types of limestone desired by some of the large consuming industries; and to give some information on the resources of limestone in Canada, so that an idea may be obtained of the present and future possibilities for limestone production. The word limestone is used in the usual broad sense to include both high-calcium limestone and the highly magnesian variety known as dolomite, as well as all intermediate types. Lime is simply calcined limestone, and in this general paper its uses have been included with those of raw limestone. It is of interest, in dealing with this subject, to glance back over the early history of the utilization of limestone, for by so doing we see that limestone has been of importance to mankind since the beginning of civilization and has contributed in no small measure to the development of a number of the arts and sciences. One of the first uses, if not the first use, of limestone was in connection with the making of lime for plastering purposes. This use antedates civilization. In the day of the ancient Greeks and Romans, the art of plastering had been brought to a state of perfection that is not nearly approached by the modern artisan.

IN November, 1932, an investigation of silicosis was undertaken at the Mcintyre Porcupine mine, Schumacher, Ont., after a discussion of the p"roblem with Sir Frederick Banting and his staff. As a result, it was decided to carry on dusting experiments with animals at the mine in a manner that would duplicate as far as possible actual industrial conditions. At that time 50 guinea pigs were placed in the crusher house tunnel of the mill where a considerable quantity of fine dust, containing approximately 35 per cent of free silica, was being constantly produced. These animals lived in this atmosphere for periods up to one year, and, while on autopsy large amounts of dust were found in the lungs, not a single case of silicosis had developed. These negative results suggested, among other things, that the mine gases might be a predisposing factor in the production of silicosis, and the results of this investigation (1) led us to undertake the study of the hydrogen-ion concentration of the condensate of the atmosphere, both in the mine and in various sections of the mill. The CO, combining power of blood serum on a series of 400 miners was also studied at this time. While these results were inconclusive, the variation in the hydrogen-ion concentration of the condensate between the surface and underground atmospheres encouraged us to investigate the effect of neutral, weak acid, and alkaline solutions on the solubility of siliceous materials. Gye and Purdy (2) were the first to point out that the chemical reaction, and not the physical presence of siliceous material, was responsible for the production of the fibrosis in silicosis. This work was investigated by Gardner and Cummings (3), who showed that the tissue reaction to quartz was definitely proportional to the size of the particle. They found that 1-3 micron particles of quartz produced an acute proliferative fibrotic response, while the 10-12 micron particles produced only a foreign-body reaction up to a period of three years. It is accepted that the dangerous silica particles retained by the lung are under 5 microns in diameter.

The Sweetwater, Castro, Trinidad, New London, and Hilltop chromite properties are situated within an area 8 miles long and 1 mile wide between San Luis Obispo city and Morro Creek, San Luis Obiso County, Calif. Development work at this group of mines was a part of a long-range project by the Bureau of Mines to develop strategic mineral reserves in the United States in accordance with the Strategic Minerals Act of 1939. The junior author of this report participated in the preliminary examinations made in 1941 of the chromite deposits that later in the same year were the subject of more intensive investigation under the immediate supervision of the senior author. The ore occurs in lenses and kidneys in masses of dunite contained in large poridetite areas. Production has boon in the form of lump ore and concentrates from disseminated ore. Work by the Bureau of Miner included surveying, mapping, trenching, sampling, and assaying. It is summarized separately in the text under the name of each mine investigated. The report gives a brief history of the district, describer the concentrating plant of the Castro Associates, and gives detailed results on sampling and assays at the various proportion.

Mining has been around for a long time, and new deposits are being discovered continually but are becoming more complex for processing and typically sulfide in nature. Most of the large easy deposits with simplified and cheaper to process oxide material have been mined or the deposits are locked up with legal or social issues and may never be mined. It is common to see the mines today being evaluated to mine have little in oxides and have a sulfide component to the deposit. This creates a problem with explosives being selected for the mine because ANFO could cause a reactive ground issue. When evaluating the cost component of mining for future mines, ANFO is the go-to selected bulk explosive because of the cost and effectiveness. More work needs to be done by projects evaluating costs by properly testing the ground and water conditions to match the correct bulk explosive for the ground conditions of the mine. This will prevent a possible safety hazard and the best result for the mine.

Lithium-ion battery pack fires pose great hazards to the safety and health of miners. A detailed experimental study has been conducted at the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) Pittsburgh Mining Research Division (PMRD) to investigate the effectiveness of different fire suppression systems on Li-ion battery pack fire extinguishment. Tests were conducted in a well-ventilated container. Two sizes of battery packs (12 V, 24 V) were heated by heater strips to trigger thermal runaway and fire. Water mist with different flow rates, ABC powder, type D dry chemical, and water mist with F500 additives were used as the fire suppression agents. Multiple thermocouples were installed on the battery packs to measure the temperature evolution during the tests. The results indicated that the water mist with F500 additives is the most effective suppressant among the agents tested. Dry chemicals, however, do quench the fire for a moment, but cannot prevent re-ignition of the battery since they do not provide enough cooling. The findings of this paper can be used to develop safer battery fire suppression techniques in mining environments.

Polish coal mines are well equipped with methane monitoring systems,nevertheless the worsening conditions force a continuous impro- vement in the field of environmental monitoring. Application of modern electronic components make it possible to design the new modular telemonitoring system incorporating the best features of the older systems,widely employed in Polish collieries, eliminating their weak points. Several new sensors and portable instru- ments for methane monitoring and early fire detection have been developed and tested in mining conditions.
