"The theoretical technique of computational modeling and the experimental determination of the enthalpy of adsorption of a ligand molecule onto a mineral surface deliver the same output parameters and, therefore, complement each other in investigating the affinity of different ligand types for mineral surfaces.This study ran parallel experimental tests and computational calculations to determine the enthalpy of adsorption of a series of increasing chain length xanthates onto a pyrite surface. The outcomes showed that, while the absolute energy values were different, the trends were similar. Both computational and experimental approaches showed that the extent of the interaction of the xanthate molecule increases with increasing carbon chain length. The computational values were larger than the experimental values, which could be explained, in part, by the addition of water to the computational system, which resulted in a decrease in the heat of adsorption on the (100) surface, compared to the adsorption of the collector in a vacuum. The computational method showed that, in the case of the pyrite (100) surface, the most exothermic reaction was obtained when the two xanthate sulfur atoms bridged two pyrite 5-coordinated iron atoms. The (111) surface was found to be more reactive and different adsorption mechanisms were predicted for each of the C2, C3, C4 and C5 chain length xanthates.The experimentally determined exothermic increase in heat of adsorption for the addition of each CH2 group was found to be -8.17 kJ/mol. The contribution of the thiol head group was -34.9 kJ/mol. Previous studies on self-assembled monolayers have shown that these values are compatible with lateral interactions between CH2 groups and the exclusion of water. This study provides a rigorous experimental and computational approach which is intended to afford confidence in modelled data for the screening of new ligands for flotation processes.INTRODUCTIONComputational modelling is a fast and cost-effective method of screening collector molecules for the efficacy of their adsorption onto mineral surfaces. However, it is desirable to measure the computational outputs against experimental outputs to check for congruency. Computational modelling and experimental microcalorimetry both deliver the same output parameter: the energy of adsorption of the molecule onto the solid surface. These techniques are therefore ideally suited to complement one another in investigating the affinity of the interaction between collector molecules and mineral surfaces."

"Plant design parameters for gold extraction, leach residence time and cyanide consumption are generally determined from standard bench-scale bottle roll or agitation leach tests. The application of laboratory data to process design has essentially evolved from the testing of oxide or low cyanide-consuming ores. Such scale-up factors may not be appropriate for ores that deplete cyanide and oxygen since this interferes with gold extraction kinetics. High cyanide-consuming ores also exacerbate the differences between the conditions applicable to small batch tests and large continuous operations. Testing a reactive high-sulfide South American ore deposit necessitated the re-evaluation of conventional bench-scale cyanidation procedures. Pulp density can be a major factor affecting the results for plant design purposes and should be treated as a test work variable. As with high clay-bearing ore, where pulp viscosity can hinder mass transfer, minimizing the influence of test equipment on gold extraction kinetics may require low pulp densities. This introduces interpretative complexity since cyanide consumption changes as a function of pulp density. Activated carbon also consumes cyanide, so its effect has to be accounted for in the case of carbon-in-leach (CIL) or carbon-in-pulp (CIP) plant flowsheets. Since cyanide is an expensive reagent, often a major component of plant operating costs, it is important that the scale-up of cyanide consumption from laboratory to plant be representative. The traditional method of reporting cyanide consumption in bench-scale testing is questioned since it takes credit for residual free cyanide in leach tails. The projected plant consumption may be better estimated by using the total cyanide addition in a laboratory test. We propose a test work protocol that categorizes the cyanide consumption into its components but requires more extensive testing to generate design data. The ultimate validation of scale-up factors used by project engineers requires rigorous bench-scale versus commercial plant comparative data. Such data are not readily available.IntroductionMajor factors in the design of a gold processing plant are gold recovery, leach residence time and cyanide consumption. These parameters are important determinants of project revenue and costs and, thereby, potentially of project financial viability. Estimates of the associated design criteria for a commercial plant are normally generated from laboratory cyanidation, carbon-in-leach (CIL) or carbon-in-pulp (CIP) tests using standard procedures (Angove, 2005). The key question is whether the standard laboratory test work procedures developed historically for low reagent consuming ores are appropriate for ores that are highcyanide and oxygen consumers.The present paper examines test procedural factors that can influence the test work results and, therefore, their interpretation for design scale-up purposes. The study refers in particular to a high cyanide-consuming sulfide ore. The ore was being tested to develop scoping level engineering design criteria for a proposed project in South America."

CALIFORNIA possesses such an abundance of ceramic materials other than clays, that she is quite independent of other states and foreign countries so far as these materials are concerned. Certain users import some feldspar, silica, and allied minerals, but they do so from choice and not necessity. Production is largely for home consumption, so the total volume of ceramic materials produced is comparatively small. Many small deposits of the materials here under discussion are worked by individuals, and their output sold to individual grinding companies or users. The data given here shall be confined to the larger deposits and developments because they give a truer picture of typical deposits, operations, and materials.

A new step in the Bayer process has been used to recover NaOH and to reduce its content in red mud. After digestion, the residue is separated from the Bayer liquor and goes through press filters, which enables the recovery of NaOH and decreases the moisture content. It is well known that red mud is one of the most important sources of scandium. For this reason, the goal of this work was to characterize a Brazilian red mud (BRM) for scandium recovery. The sample was collected after the press filter system process. Analysis of energy-dispersive X-ray fluorescence (EDXRF), scanning electron microscopy/energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (SEM/EDS), and X-ray diffraction (XRD) was performed. Microwave digestion using an acid mixture was carried out to determine the concentration of the main elements. Fe2O3 represented 40% of the BRM, and the Sc concentration was 43 mg/kg. The SiO2 content was 24%, which is the highest value found in the literature, whereas the sodium concentration was the lowest. A literature review was carried out to compare results with BRM, as well as the current studies for recovery of scandium by the leaching/ion-exchange process. Scandium recovery using a leaching/ion exchange process may be possible with efficiency higher than 90%. The greatest challenge is the occurrence of silica gel formation during leaching.

The presence of iron in sphalerite induces the formation of zinc ferrite (ZF) during roasting. Zinc refinery residues (ZRR) and electric arc furnace dust (EAFD) contain a significant amount of zinc ferrite and are difficult to treat. According to the literature, up to 71% ZF has been found to be present in ZRR. The dissolution of zinc ferrite is inefficient even in aqua regia. The Waelz process is an existing process to recover zinc from electric arc furnace dust by reduction using carbon monoxide followed by the volatilization of zinc. In this study, zinc was selectively extracted from zinc ferrite by partial reduction of zinc ferrite at relatively low temperature followed by leaching in dilute sulfuric acid (20 g/L). Pure zinc ferrite samples were partially reduced to zinc oxide and magnetite by using H2 gas as a reductant. The presence of magnetite and zinc oxide was confirmed by X-ray diffraction (XRD) technique. A maximum of 95%zinc extraction was achieved after leaching with sulfuric acid on the reacted samples. The paper also discusses the effect of time, temperature, and concentration of H2 in the reducing gas on the extraction of zinc and iron from ZF.

All surface drilling data such as assays, density and location information, are stored on disk files at the Company's Technical Computing Centre at Perth, W.A. The computer is used to search through the data, select significant ore intersections, calculate the area of influence of each intersection and perform the necessary calculations to arrive at an estimate of the ore reserve. This work was conducted to determine a feasible process for converting siliceous fluoride offgases to a commercially usable product. The offgases were generated by pyrohydrolytic defluorination of low-grade fluorspar in a gas-fired rotary kiln, and fluorine was collected as a hydrofluoric-fluosilicic acid. A silicon-free fluoride solution for further processing was then produced by neutralizing the acidic scrubber solution with anhydrous ammonia, silicon being separated as orthosilicic acid. Ninety to ninety-nine percent of the fluorine originally present remained in solution as ammonium fluoride. Silicon was also separated from synthetic fluosilicic acids, having F-to-Si weight ratios ranging from 3.50 to 14.3. The solutions below a ratio of 4.06, the F-to-Si ratio of H2SiF6, containing dissolved silicon were desiliconized as completely as those containing less than the stoichiometric quantity of silicon. An electrolytic-grade cryolite was recovered from the ammonium fluoride solution by reacting with either sodium aluminate or alumina trihydrate and sodium hydroxide. A product containing 97 to 100 percent of the fluorine, represented by Na3A1F6, was recovered, and 94 to 99 percent of the theoretical yield was realized.

Mean boundary migration depended linearly upon creep extension under various conditions. Prolonged annealing or air-casting increased the proportion of immobile boundaries at a given stage of tests. Grain growth during annealing followed a power law. The linking of migration and sliding in creep and models for migration are examined; activation energies are calculated from these models. Segregation of oxygen to boundaries appears to be a controlling factor. THE idea that boundary migration and boundary sliding during creep are linked has often been suggested,'-5 especially when evidence has been obtained for an alternation between the two processes. In simple bicrystals sliding can occur without any migration6 but in more complex bicrystals7 it is observed. McLean' and Couling and Roberts 5 made measurements of both sliding and migration; McLean concluded that there was no linking of the two processes whereas Couling and Roberts supported the idea. McLean' also developed a model for migration during creep and annealing. The present work was initiated as part of a study of the recrystallization of lead during creep9 but has been extended to examine some aspects of the mechanism of migration. MATERIALS AND METHODS Specially refined high-purity lead* was used; the total of impurities, excluding oxygen, was 0.0008 wt pct. Oxygen was removed as far as possible by melting in vacuo, treating at 550" to 600°C with hydrogen and then casting at 450°C under a vacuum of 10-2 mm Hg; the oxygen was then believed to be 0.00005 wt pct. Specimens were made from extruded strip and then annealed at the required temperature in an air oven, controlled to 5 lac. They were then polished in a mixture of acetic acid and hydrogen peroxide. At this stage some specimens were etched to give grain contrast and their grain sizes determined by the intercept method. Migration of boundaries during creep was measured on the surface of polished (not etched) specimens, directly loaded at room temperature (22°C) or 50°C (52"C) to initial stresses of 300 to 700 1b per sq in. Twenty six vacuum-cast hydrogen-reduced specimens were used and, in addition, two specimens were from material air cast after hydrogen reduction ("partial" air cast) and two from air-cast material not treated with hydrogen ("full" air cast). Duplicates were made in the majority of tests. At intervals through the creep tests, specimens were unloaded and the migration measured, normal to the direction of migration at the point of measurement, for each boundary along standard traverses. Usually between 110 to 180 boundaries were measured at each of some twelve stages of the tests. Migration was measured on the projected image (X100) using prism illumination. Fig. 1 illustrates the method of measurement and shows the kind of variation of migration found from boundary to boundary and along particular boundaries. Fig. 2 gives an example of more extensive migration. The mean value of distance migrated was generally reproducible to *10 pct but occasional points gave a scatter of *20 pct. The correctibn applied by McLean8 to allow for the contribution sliding makes to the apparent distance of migration could not be used, for the sliding at most boundaries was too small to measure with the equipment available. Several fundamental aspects related to the nickel electrowinning from chloride electrolytes have been addressed in this paper. The thermodynamic study includes the activity coefficient of the hydrogen ion and the speciation diagram of NiCI2 solutions. The activity coefficient of the hydrogen ion (YH+) was calculated and estimated experimentally using a combination glass pH electrode. It was found that YH+ was greater than one in concentrated NiCl2 solutions and increased significantly with increasing NiCl2 concentration. The speciation diagram for NiCl2 solutions was plotted with YH+ and the effect of the ionic strength on the equilibrium constants being taken into account. It was discovered that the predominant nickel species in the acidic region were Ni2+ and NiCI+ in 0.937 M NiCl2 solution at 25°C. Electrodeposition tests demonstrated that higher Nit' concentration in the electrolyte improved the current efficiency of nickel electrodeposition (CENi). The additions of H3BO3, and NH4Cl increased very little the current efficiency of nickel electrodeposition at pH 1.5 and temperature 60°C. However, the addition of sulfate decreased the current efficiency of nickel electrodeposition. Nickel electrodeposition was also found to be a steady-state process since the amount of acid added to the electrolyte at a constant pH increased linearly with time during galvanostatic electrodeposition. The cathode surface pH during nickel electrodeposition was measured using a flat-bottom combination glass pH electrode and a 500-mesh gold gauze as cathode. The cathode surface pH was found always to be higher than the pH in the bulk electrolyte, and if the current density was sufficiently large, it would eventually reach a level causing precipitation of insoluble Ni(OH)2(s) on the cathode surface. Rotating disc electrode studies revealed that the rate of nickel electrodeposition was first order with respect to the activity of nickel ion and zero order with respect to the activities of chloride and hydrogen ions. The rate of hydrogen evolution was found to be first order with respect to the activity of hydrogen ion and to be zero order with respect to the activities of nickel and chloride ions. These findings indicate that nickel deposition and hydrogen evolution proceed independently.

This paper, describing the operation of the Gifford Hill & Co. plant at Hoot Spur near Texarkana, is one of a series being prepared for and published by the United States Bureau of Mines on methods and costs of mining and preparing gravel and sand throughout the United States. These tapers are designed to disseminate technical information regarding the methods used. The cost tabulations represent local operating expenditures only and not total production costs. Although the publication of total costs might not be advisable in some instances yet a knowledge of operating costs is essential to the technical discussion and study of methods employed. The attention of the reader is specifically called to this differentiation in order that no misunderstanding of the scope of the cost tabulation shall ensue. The plant described combines some features of dredging and some of dry-pit operation, as material is excavated in a dry pit with a drag line, hauled to the plant in standard-gage cars, and then pumped. This operation should be of special interest to operators whose deposits contain a large quantity of clay.

This study addressed the separation and recovery of vanadium(IV), iron, and titanium from synthetic and real leach solutions of vanadium-bearing titanomagnetite using extractant P204 (di-(2-ethylhexyl) phosphate) and P507 (2-ethylhexyl hydrogen- 2-ethylhexyl phosphonate). Based on the speciation analysis of vanadium in sulfuric acid medium, the single-stage extraction efficiency of vanadium, iron, and titanium was 94.21%, 3.45%, and 5.32%, respectively, under the optimal extraction condition of P204-P507 concentration of 15% (v/v), P204 to P507 ratio of 3:1 (v/v), TBP (Tributyl phosphate) concentration of 5%, sulfonated kerosene concentration of 80%, initial pH of 1.8, contact time of 8 min, and phase ratio (O/A) of 2:1. By confirming the predictions of the McCabe-Thiele diagram, a five-stage countercurrent extraction was carried out and the desirable extraction efficiency for vanadium reached 98.13%. The maximum co-extraction coefficient and distribution ratio of vanadium were 2.58 and 26.23, respectively. The stripping efficiencies and concentrations of a vanadium-rich solution by three stages of countercurrent experiments with 20 vol.% sulfuric acid reached 99.14% and 0.58 g/L, respectively, while almost all of the titanium remained in the organic phase. The mechanism of synergistic extraction between hydrogen ions of P–O–H and VO2+ in acidic conditions was confirmed by ATR-FTIR spectroscopy and molecular structure derivation. Besides, the separated impurity ions ( Fe2+) after oxidation, precipitation, and roasting process form a qualified iron oxide pigment with a total iron content of 97.2%.

Iran has had an active mining sector for some 7000 years. Exceptional in terms of its mineral diversity, Iran produces 62 minerals, and is ranked among the world’s 15 most mineral-rich countries. Many people around the world know Iran as one of the major petroleum exporters. Oil and natural gas dominate Iran’s economy, and oil exports provide the principal source of income, contributing more than 80 per cent of foreign exchange earnings. Transformation of Iran from an oil exporter to an independent country to oil has been on the table for many years, even before the Islamic Revolution of 1979. Development of the Iran’s mineral industry is one of the major replacements for petroleum exports. In the last decade, Iran invested billion dollars in the mining and mineral industry sectors and to increase the added value, tried to export processed minerals instead of the raw materials. In accordance with the ‘20-year Perspective 2025’ that targeted by the Supreme Leader, Iran will be a country with the first rank in economy, science and technology in its region. The objectives over this perspective include briefly increasing annual production to 55 Mt of crude steel, 800 000 tonne of copper cathode, 1.5 Mt of aluminium, 200 Mt mineral products, 300 000 tonne of zinc and 5 000 kg of gold. These goals are achievable in normal circumstances, but concurrency of the 20-year Perspective 2025 with commencement of the UN Security Council sanctions against Iran, frustrated objectives of the perspective, at least the ones related to the mining and mineral industry sectors. This paper tries to elaborate the development programs and following challenges for the mining activities of Iran by 2025.

In this study, mineralogical and microanalysis characterization, as well as diagnostic leaching and cyanidation tests, were performed to gain a better understanding of the refractory nature of the arsenical zone of a Carlin-type gold deposit and also to evaluate possible treatment routes to maximize gold recovery. The results obtained showed that only 56% of the ore’s gold content is amenable to direct cyanidation. The majority of the remaining gold was found as submicroscopic gold and in association with sulfide minerals, such as orpiment, pyrite, and sphalerite. It was also found that despite the abundance of silicate and carbonate minerals in the arsenical zone, they do not play a key role in the refractory nature of the ore, and gold can be liberated from such minerals by appropriate grinding. The analyses further revealed that orpiment dissolves readily during cyanidation, and this dissolution retards the kinetics of gold extraction. Pyrite and sphalerite were generally found to occur in fine network texture and in association with quartz. Flotation of such auriferous sulfides may be difficult due to their oxidized surface. Fine grinding (−20 μm) was found to be partially effective in improving gold extraction.

The effects of hydrostatic pressures to 26 kbars on the micro structure of poly crystalline Cd, Zn, Bi, Sn, Zr, Mg, Cu, and Fe were examined. Pressure-induced microscopic plastic flow in the form of boundary migration, slip, multiple slip, or twinning has been observed either singly or in combination in cadmium, zinc, bismuth, and tin. No deformation was observed in zirconium, magnesium, copper, and iron. The occurrence of such deformation, in terms of its intensity and initiation pressure, relates directly to the degree of anisotropy in the linear compressibility. Pressure cycling does not significantly affect the residual tensile properties of a zinc alloy which exhibits pressure-induced deformation similar to that of Pure zinc. CLASSICAL elastic theory predicts that a superim-posed hydrostatic pressure will not induce shear stresses in an ideal material. Thus, in the case of homogeneous and isotropic materials plastic flow will not occur as a result of pressure exposure, regardless of the magnitude of the pressure, unless some form of phase transformation or permanent density change takes place. However, real materials, such as metals, often vary considerably from the condition of homogeneity and isotropy. For this reason, Vu and johannin' examined and observed hydrostatic pressure-induced microscopic deformation in polycrystalline cadmium and, zinc, but not in aluminum, to pressures of 9 kbars and indicated that its occurrence is related to anisotropy in the linear compressibility. In addition, Davidson and omaan' have reported pressure-induced deformation in polycrystalline bismuth below the 1-11 transformation pressure. It becomes apparent then that under certain conditions hydrostatic pressure can induce localized internal shear stresses in some metals of sufficient magnitude to cause plastic flow. In this work, eight pure single-phase metals of different lattice structures and degrees of elastic anisotropy were examined after pressure exposures of up to 26 kbars in order to establish the conditions under which such deformation occurs and the type of deformation as a function of pressure. "The Lucky Jim mine is at Zincton in Slocan mmmg division; on the Kaslo-Nakusp branch of the Canadian Pacific railway. It is owned and operated by Zincton Mines; Limited; a subsidiary of Sheep Creek Gold Mines; Limited. The mine is far in the lead in the production of zinc in the Slocan. Its recorded production from concentrates and shipping ore was 102; 260; 191 pounds of zinc to the end of 1945.GENERAL GEOLOGY With the exception of acidic dykes the rocks near the Lucky Jim mine belong to the Slocan series, which is Triassic in age and consists principally of argillaceous rocks. It disconformably overlies greenstones of the Triassic Kaslo series about 3 miles to the northeast, and is cut by granitic rocks of the Nelson batholith 5 miles to the southeast.The sedimentary rocks in this area are best referred to on the whole as slates. They lie within the more fissile basal part of the Slocan series. The term 'slate belt' conveniently distinguishes this area of rocks characterized by slaty cleavage from the more massive argillites that are more characteristic of the Slocan as a whole. The contact between the slaty and massive argillites lies ½ mile southwest of the mine."

During the past several years, Raymond Kaiser Engineers has prepared numerous studies concerning the technical and economic feasibility of coal exporting facilities in the western United States. Perhaps the most striking conclusion to be drawn from these efforts is that many people underestimate the complexity of the highly competitive, dynamic coal marketing system which includes coal loading terminals as an essential but relatively low-cost link in the energy production and delivery chain. The title of this paper, "The Status of Western United States Coal Ports - An Economic Assessment," should not delude anyone into thinking that the future of western U.S. coal- exporting ports has now congealed into a well- defined economic plan. As this paper will demonstrate, the situation is complex and more dynamic than ever and promises to remain so into the late 1980's.

The results of a detailed acid rock drainage (ARD) prediction program were used to revise the waste rock segregation criteria at the Restigouche open pit mine. Waste rock at the site was predominately derived from altered volcanic rocks that hosted a massive sulfide lead/zinc orebody. The program assessed the five years of drainage chemistry from both the potentially acid generating and the non-acid generating waste rock storage facilities in addition to laboratory-based kinetic test results. Material-specific leaching characteristics including relative metal-release rates and neutralisation potential depletion rates were determined from 12 laboratory-based kinetic tests. Solid-phase analyses indicated that, although pyrite was typically the most abundant sulfide mineral in the waste rock, its abundance varied significantly as documented by total sulfur contents ranging from 4.0 per cent. Kinetic test results were used to establish revised waste rock segregation criteria based on total sulfur content and neutralisation potential. The revised criteria maintain that waste material with a total sulfur content 4.0 per cent as potentially acid generating. When present in sufficient quantities, ankerite provided an effective source of neutralisation potential for the range of observed sulfide oxidation rates. Kinetic testing documented that up to 6 kg CaCO3/t was ineffective at neutralising acidity in samples that contained >4 per cent S. The carbonate molar ratio measured from the humidity cells was adjusted to reflect the stoichiometry of the ankerite and applied as an NP/AP criteria for waste rock containing 0.1 <S per cent <4.0.
