Tunnel driving is recognized as one of the most hazardous of occupations; this is a reflection of the high accident severity rates and resultant high compensation and similar costs in this industry. Most tunnels are driven by contractors who bid for the jobs, taking into consideration the prevailing industrial insurance rates at the time the bids are placed. After the bid is secured the contractor then attempts to complete the job at the minimum cost to himself. In a sense the accident-cost item is fixed for at least one year when a policy is secured. Time is generally an important factor not only for the contractor, but also for the insurance carrier and the assured. If the assured represents a private interest, the cost burden usually is ultimately placed on the general public which avails itself of the service contemplated; if the project is a governmental enterprise the cost burden unquestionably falls upon the general public involved and on the general tax payer. For these reasons it is of vital interest to the public that accidents not only be kept at a minimum as a humanitarian objective, but also because the accident-cost burden, too frequently not even realized and considered to the degree that it should be, can assume proportions that materially affect the cost of the enterprise. The basic industrial insurance rate for tunneling in California in 1932 contemplated an earned premium of 12.12 percent of the labor pay roll. The State has been particularly engaged in large construction enterprises, some of which involve high accident cost rates, notably structural-steel bridge building, which contemplates an earned premium of 19.65 percent of the labor pay roll. When this figure is compared with the much lower rates that apply to other industries it is apparent that a heavy toll in human wreckage is taken by such engineering projects, which must be viewed as monuments to human suffering as veil as to human achievement.

Introduction The property of Siscoe Gold Mines, Limited, is located on an island of three hundred and forty acres in lake Kienawisik, about fifty-two miles east of Noranda and forty-three miles south of Amos, Quebec. Lake Kienawisik is a part of the Harricanaw drainage system and is crossed by the main line of the Canadian National railway at Amos. This waterway is navigable for boats with a draught of six to eight feet. Diesel engines have been the source of power at the property since milling operations were commenced in January, 1929. The power plant as first designed and built was for a milling capacity of 100 tons. Two Polar-Atlas units, each of 200 h. p., comprised the original installation. With the growth of the 'mine, more engines were added until, at the present time, there is installed at the Siscoe what is rated the largest Diesel plant at any mining property in Canada. Definition of a Diesel 'The Diesel engine is an internal combustion engine which works with liquid fuel introduced after, and independently of, the air charge at a time when communication between the cylinder and the outside atmosphere is cut off, and which ignites the fuel by compression-beat and stored combustion-heat unassisted by heat sources outside the cylinder itself while the engine is in stable operating condition"(1).

IN dealing with segregation in babbitt, and its effect on the final cast structure, which is a bearing, it is obviously impossible to cover all of the compositions manufactured. Each composition, of course, will exhibit certain specific types of segregation. However, as examples,, two compositions of babbitt are presented: one a tin-base of well-known analysis and the other a lead-base, which in the past few years has found wide usage. Bearings usually are cast either statically or centrifugally; therefore the effect of these two methods on segregation is presented. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE A slab of babbitt 1/2 in. thick by 5 in. wide and 17 in. long was cast, using a book mold with the long edge vertical. An A.S.T.M. grade 2 babbitt was used (3.5 per cent copper, 7.5 per cent antimony, remainder tin), to which 0.10 per cent tellurium had been added. Unfortunately, no metal without tellurium was available. The mold to hold the babbitt was heated to approximately 300°F., the temperature being judged by the babbitter. The pouring temperature of the babbitt was 875°F. (470°C.). One slab was made by allowing the babbitt to cool without stirring. The other slab was stirred during the entire cooling cycle. This stirring consisted of a vigorous churning or puddling into the mold until complete solidification had taken place. Three samples were removed from these slabs. One was taken at the extreme bottom, another half way to the top, and another at the extreme top, all at the center of the width. Chemical, macroscopic and microscopic examination was made of all samples. Table I shows the chemical analyses obtained at the described positions [ ] in the slab. The analyses show no serious amount of gravity segregation. Microscopic examination from edge to edge of the slab showed little change in structure. From top to bottom there was a progressive coarsening of the grain size in the stirred slab but little change in the slab that was not stirred (Fig. I). No definite exhibit of segregation could be detected. In line with our experimental study on the tin-base babbitts, we cast an almost duplicate slab using A.S.T.M. Alloy No. 15, containing 0.9 to 1.25 per cent tin, 14.75 to 15.5. per cent antimony, 0.80 to 1.25 per cent arsenic and 0.4 per cent copper. The slab was 16 in. long and 3/8 in. thick, cast with the long side vertical. One slab was allowed to cool normally and the other was stirred continually during cooling. "An extensive mixed-mode fracture toughness testing programme was conducted on coal from three coal fields. A special mixed-mode testing fixture for coal and other geologic materials was developed together with reliable specimen preparation procedures. Dynamic modulus measurements made on each of the 116 fracture toughness specimens showed that these coals exhibit certain degrees of anisotropy. The fracture toughness testing programme systematically varied the loading rate, specimen orientation and fracture loading mode. Loading rate did not significantly effect the fracture toughness over the quasi-static range tested. Orientation did have a significant effect on measured fracture toughness. In the coals tested, the divider orientation and arrester orientation had higher fracture toughness than the short transverse orientation. Data showed that one orientation could have almost twice the fracture toughness as another. The fracture toughness testing enabled certain evaluations of three mixed-mode fracture theories: maximum tangential stress, maximum energy release rate and strain energy density theory. Due to the extreme heterogeneity of the coals tested, definitive conclusions regarding the best mixed-mode fracture theory are not possible; however, data do tend to support the strain energy density theory. INTRODUCTIONThe major aim of this research is to ·develop a fundamental understanding of how fine· fragments of coal (respirable dust) are generated during a fracture process. In a related paper [l], a hypothesis was presented for the mechanism of fine fragment formation during a generic coal material/cutting tool interaction. In this hypothesis, fine fragments are created during coal material/cutting tool interactions that are best described as general mixed-mode fracture processes. Data are required on the mixed-mode fracture behaviour of coal, the physical character of the newly-created fracture surfaces and the character of the inherent flaw structure of the coal material. Accordingly, a test programme was designed that provided some information in each of these areas. The testing effort seeks to measure critical fracture toughness under mixed-mode loadings as a material parameter characterizing in part the tendency of various coals to generate undesirable quantities of fines and respirable dust."

This work was undertaken to determine the feasibility of making mixed diborides of two metals directly from the metal oxides , boron carbide and carbon . The diborides (Ti , V ) , B₂ , (Ti , Cb) B₂ , and ( Ti , Ta ) B₂ were prepared in a crucible resistance furnace at 2,100 ° C , and X- ray- diffraction analyses showed each was a homogeneous solid solution containing approximately equal molar contents of the given diborides . The diboride powders were cold - pressed ; sintered to 2,300 ° C , and evaluated for mechanical strength , rate of oxidation , and resistance to molten metals . The diboride ( Ti , Ta ) B₂ exhibited the best mechanical properties ; the diboride ( Ti , Cb ) B₂ , the lowest cumulative rate of oxidation . The mixtures were stable in the presence of molten aluminum and copper but were attacked by molten Ti , Zr , and Cr .

The procedure suggested in this report is intended for the use of engineers, esters, accountants, etc., in estimating the cost of chemical-type operations. It is intended to over operating costs, not investment costs, as the latter have been covered numerous other publications. However, as capital investment costs are reflected to a high degree in operating costs, it is important to point out that accuracy of investment costs is highly essential. Therefore, all factors that might be included under plant -capital costs should be considered, such as requirements of shops, employees' housing, etc. The procedure is designed primarily for use in types of chemical oper¬ations, such as the production of synthetic liquid fuels, anhydrous ammonia, and others of like or similar nature. Yet, no attempt has been made to cover the entire chemical industry.

Galvanic corrosion between dissimilar materials, such as steel and graphite, leads to safety concerns for many industries, including mining. In this study, researchers from the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) analyzed rock samples from two mines in the United States that exhibit electrochemical properties similar to graphite through laboratory measurements to investigate their observed in-situ influence on underground metal support. Uniform corrosion rates of mild steel coupons, inflatable bolt coupons, and friction bolt coupons galvanically coupled to rock samples were obtained using both potentiodynamic polarization and zero resistance ammetry. Increased uniform corrosion rates were witnessed between the coupled rock and steel system, over those of just the steel alone. Surface analysis of the metal samples showed the presence of pitting corrosion, reflective of bolt samples removed from partner mines. Corrosion pitting of ground support structures in contact with graphitic rock in underground mines poses safety concerns for mine workers by increasing the rate of corrosion and decreasing bolt strength over time and will be further investigated for intervention strategies.

THE tendency all over Europe, just as it is with us, is to go to the use of turbines for new construction or replacement of old steam or even gas engines. 'The lower construction cost and the lower operating cost, when they can have high steam temperatures and pressures, together with their efficiency, is the cause of this change to turbines, both high and low pressure. The present trend is to equip plants with modern, efficient steam boilers, turbines, etc., and gradually work into high-pressure superheated steam equipment to accomplish a saving. One company has just completed a 375 to 400 lb., 700 deg. superheated steam installation and turbo-blowers with this end in view. Some of our new steam plants are using 350 lb. working pressure.

The various Latin American countries are undergoing a slow process of industrialization. The harvesting of one or two agricultural commodities or the mining of a few marketable minerals is being supplemented by development of an Integrated industrial economy. In many countries, progress in this direction has not been rapid, but as it gains impetus an increasing market for cement is a natural consequence. This is evident from the fact that industrialization is linked with increasing transportation, and means of transportation are very poor in much of Latin America. Bridges, culverts, and concrete Highway's, now scattered sparingly throughout the vast land areas south of the United States, must multiply as the demands of industry increase and as a higher scale of living is attained. Eventually the South American countries will be linked by modern highways. Furthermore, the arid climate of many regions creates a demand for construction of dams and irrigation works, and a continent poor in coal reserves but with abundant water power inevitably must direct its energies toward the construction of hydroelectric power plants. Countries rich in raw materials but with few natural harbors have urgent need of massive concrete breakwaters and docks. The demand for concrete in houses will also grow. Standards of living are low, and perishable building materials are widely used. As living conditions improve cement will be used increasingly in home construction. Even in the field of simple and modest housing cement affords a means of creating low-priced verminproof and fireproof homes, for which the need it imperative under climatic conditions that prevail in this area of the world. Already many of the countries have undertaken extensive public works, and such programs are likely to increase. Assuming moderate industrial progress and stabilized governments the demand for cement in this great southern area promises substantial growth.

This paper summarizes the Bureau of Reclamation's experience in the use of boring machines to excavate six major tunnels on the Bureau's water resources development projects in the western United States. The summary of experience is presented as a compilation of brief case studies for each of the six tunnels. Each compilation presents data on the tunnel dimensions, geological characteristics of the excavated rock, the tunneling machine used, machine operation, muck handling, method of tunnel support, ventilation system, and related information. The listing of the six tunnels in Table 1 reflects a diversity of tunnel lengths and diameters. However, despite this diversity of dimensions as well as the variety of rock encountered during excavation, the six tunnels have one major characteristic in common: their excavation was significantly expedited by the use of boring machines. Beginning with the 10,079-foot-long Tunnel No. 1 on the Navajo Indian Irrigation Project in New Mexico - the Bureau's first tunnel to be excavated by a boring machine - the boring machines, or "moles," have demonstrated their effectiveness in rapid and economical tunnel excavation. Tunnel No. 1, virtually 2 miles long, was bored through in 9 months, an unprecedented achievement in Bureau engineering experience, as compared with tunnels previously excavated by conventional means. In this paper a simple three-layered medium is considered. A circular hole is centrally located in the intermediate layer. The layered sheet is loaded uniaxially perpendicular to the stratification. The Young's modulus of the intermediate layer is lower than that of the outer layers. The stress distribution around the circular hole in a stratified medium is significantly different when compared to the case of a continuous homogeneous medium. The distribution depends upon the ratio of the height of [the] intermediate layer and [the] hole diameter. A comparison of stress the distribution and procedures for preparation and testing of [the] model are given. The potential of the technique is outlined.

Coalbed gas content measurements are commonly used in mine safety as well as coalbed methane resource assessment and recovery applications. Gas content determination techniques generally fall into two categories: (1) direct methods which actually measure the volume of gas released from a coal sample sealed into a desorption canister and (2) indirect methods based on empirical correlations, or laboratory derived sorption isotherm gas storage capacity data. Direct gas content determination techniques may be further. subdivided into quick-crushing and extended desorption methods. The quick-crushing methods are primarily used in mine safety applications outside the United States, but have also been used for resource recovery applications. Quick-crushing methods rely on crushing the coal sample soon after collection to release all the desorbable gas, thus significantly shortening the amount of time required for desorption measurements. However, some data useful for resource recovery applications are lost. Extended desorption techniques are most commonly used for resource assessment and recovery applications where information on desorption rates is useful for reservoir modeling, and for fundamental coalbed methane research. Extended desorption methods allow the gases in the coal sample to desorb under controlled laboratory conditions until a defined low desorption rate cutoff point is reached. The sample may then be crushed to measure the amount of gas remaining within the sample. Direct method techniques for gas content measurement are the focus of this paper.

Ten composite samples of Mesabi Range nonmagnetic taconite from the Hibbing, Minn., area were evaluated by flotation and by reduction roasting-magnetic separation to determine their potential as a future source of iron are. Only one of the composites yielded concentrates that could be considered marketable, using as a criterion a 10-to-1 iron-to-silica ratio. Cursory petrographic examinations of all 10 composited samples and a detailed mineralogical study on 1 sample suggest that unfavorable mineralogical associations between iron and gangue minerals are responsible for their poor beneficiation characteristics.

INTRODUCTIONThis chapter comments on some of the more common types of agreements related to property examination and acquisition, other than the farm-in/joint venture agreement or common undertaking, which is dealt with in the next two chapters. Many of the comments made in Part IV of Chapter 4 apply equally to any such agreement. In addition, many of the comments in Chapter 8 and the examples in Volume II are most certainly relevant to many other types of agreement.6.2. RIGHTS OF FIRST REFUSAL1A right of first refusal is a right that obligates an owner to offer his property, or an interest therein, to the holder of the first right if the owner intends to sell or otherwise dispose of it. It may be triggered either by the owner wishing to offer his property for sale or by receipt of a bona fide offer to purchase his interest from an “outside” third party. The mechanics and procedures to implement a first right should be set out clearly in the agreement, and their basics are the same, whether the first right is a stand-alone document or is part of an acquisition agreement.2Rights of first refusal are common in agreements to permit some control over the disposition of an interest and there they can be a valuable provision. However, some explorationists feel that they are also a good stand-alone agreement to have while a property is being evaluated to decide whether or not it is worth optioning. The reasoning is that such an arrangement will tie up the property to allow a quick look and, if the property looks interesting, the balance of the term of the first right will give an ample exclusive period of time to negotiate with the owner and settle an acquisition agreement. In addition, the explorationist is protected by the first right if the owner decides to negotiate a deal with another party."

Conversion to trolley assist is a means of minimizing diesel fuel consumption, which in many mining situations offers a rapid payback of capital investment plus the inherent flexibility and maneuverability of truck shovel operation. When diesel electric truck shovel mining operation with trolley assist is compared to alternative mining methods such as conveyor systems, the trolley assist system can be easily justified in terms of return on investment, payback and increased productivity. A review of present technology, performance requirements and past experience in the mining industry has led to the development of a trolley assist system for diesel electric haulage trucks which, is proven in the mining environment, offers significant reduction in fuel consumption and increased productivity.

Many factors enter into the efficient operation of the reciprocating type of gravity concentrator. Earlier investigators who studied these factor invariably used natural (crushed ore) products for their experiments, but in the present study synthetic products were used. The variables considered were (1) specific gravity of the sand grains, (2) size of sand drains, and (3) shape of sand grains comprising the table feeds. It is recognized, also, that the percentage relationship of the different kinds of grains is a factor affecting results. This factor is variable in one group of experiments but is thereafter kept constant.

The past four years since the 2008 MINExpo have been a roller coaster ride for the mining industry, with highs and lows and everything in between. One of the natural consequences of this uncertainty has been a number of significant consolidations and mergers, and this trend has trickled down into the crushing industry. And while there have been some significant changes to this sector of the mining industry, many of the big players have weathered the storm. The following is a look at some of the mineral processing companies that will be at MINExpo. McLanahan Corp. McLanahan Corp. is an example of the changes in the sector. The crushing and grinding stalwart acquired Universal Engineering, expanding its traditional focus on soft mineral crushing to hard rock crushing. At MINExpo, it will be showing off three new pieces of equipment, the LabMill Crusher, the Rocker Tooth Crusher and the Recessed Filter Press.

THE recorded production of the Sheep Creek camp from 1900, when the Yellowstone Mining Company first put its mill into operation, to the present day is in excess of $17,500,000. Of this total, $2,500,000 can be attributed to the early period from 1900 to 1916, at which time increased costs of labour and material due to the Great War forced abandonment of any operations on a large scale for a number of years. Since the camp was revived in 1929, at which time the Reno mine started large-scale operations, and the early 'thirties', when the increased price of gold induced the commencement of operations on other properties in the district, total gross production has been in excess of $15,000,000. In addition to the above totals, intermittent shipments were made by lessees and small operators, principally during the period of inactivity from 1916 to 1929, but no records of this production are available. The Sheep Creek camp would rank fifth in the Province-behind Rossland, Portland Canal, Bridge River, and Hedley-in gross gold production, but, because of relatively inexpensive mining and milling costs, would occupy a more prominent position in regard to total dividends paid. Operating mines at the present time include Reno Gold Mines, Gold Belt Mining Company, Kootenay Belle Gold Mines, and Sheep Creek Gold Mines. Each one of these companies, with the exception of Kootenay Belle, represents a consolidation of several smaller properties, all of which were in existence for a number of years prior to 1929. These four companies, at the present time, own, or hold options on, practically all the important claims in the district with the exception of a very few claims and fractions still held by private owners.

Explosive demolition involves first, the use of cutting charges to sever a column and second, kicker charges to move it out of alignment. Dynamite is the traditional explosive used in kicker charges as it is inexpensive, easy to initiate, and has a consistent track record of use. Dynamite, however, has health concerns in handling, fragmentation concerns from direct contact on the beam, and availability concerns due to being manufactured at only one location in the continental United States. Recently, water-cased kicker charges have been used in industry, and research has shown that a reduced dynamite mass is possible due to the added confinement, for energetic performance, and the incompressible fluid, which aids in the transfer of explosive energy into beam movement. This research will compare two different explosives, an emulsion (DYNO AP), and binary (HELIX), to dynamite for use in kicker charges, both with and without water-casing. Emulsion is commonly used in rock blasting to create a large push or throw due to its high gas volume production which could translate to kicker charge movement. HELIX is a binary explosive commonly used by the military in breaching charges with water backing. Experimental tests placed kicker charges at the base of a hanging steel column, modifying the ballistic mortar test used to determine explosive power. The study shows that water-casing effectively reduces air overpressure and enhances explosive performance. Among the tested explosives, HELIX showed the most substantial improvements with a 1.8 dB reduction in air overpressure and a 3.2 m/s (10.5 ft/s) increase in column velocity when water-cased. Dynamite and emulsion also benefited from water casing, with decreases in air overpressure (1.1 and 0.7 dB respectively) and increases in column velocity (1.1 and 0.7 m/s (3.6 and 2.3 ft/s) respectively). This research also shows that emulsion is a viable replacement for dynamite in demolition projects, performing similarly in both traditional use and water-cased charges.
