Flooded-bed dust scrubbers installed on continuous miners use fibrous type multi-layered filters to capture dust from the airstream. Prolonged operations of the scrubber could lead to filter clogging due to dust accumulation. This results in reduced flow through the scrubber and elevated dust levels in the mine environment. This paper compares the performance of a conventional fibrous screen filter and a novel impingement type dust filter. The impingement filter is a self-cleaning system and was designed to have a resistance similar to the fibrous filter. The cleaning efficiencies for these filters were computed using iso-kinetic sampling and optical counting of coal dust particles in a clean unclogged state. The cleaning efficiency of the impingement filter also increased with an increase in particle size and was comparable with the conventional fibrous filter. The cleaning efficiency of the fibrous filter improved significantly with an increase in water flow. The non-clogging nature of the impingement filter and minimal maintenance requirement makes it an attractive alternative to the conventional fibrous type filter in mining applications. The research also proposes a term called ‘filter performance factor’ to compare the performance of different filters under similar operating conditions.

The Bureau of Mines surveyed a variety of inorganic ion-exchange materials to determine their suitability for removing valuable accessory elements and troublesome contaminants from metallurgical process and waste streams. Most of the materials, which included molecular sieves, heteropolyacid salts, and hydrous metal oxides, did not give adequate separations, did not have the necessary stability in strong acids or bases, or were not in a physical form suitable for ion-exchange use. Many of the suitable inorganic materials, especially the hydrous oxides, were capable of cation exchange with high capacity only in basic conditions, which caused hydrolysis of most of the cations tested. Multivalent anions, such as arsenate and phosphate, were easily removed from acidic solutions by hydrous oxides. Hydrous zirconia was the best material for this purpose. Multivalent anions were not easily des orbed because of compound formation; therefore, conventional ion-exchange techniques could not be employed. As an alternative approach, hydrous ferric hydroxide was used as a filter material to remove arsenate and phosphate from acid solutions. One gram of arsenic was removed from solution for each 20 g of ferric hydroxide. Ferric hydroxide is preferable to hydrous zirconia for use as a filter material because of low cost.

Although blasting remains the most inexpensive method of fragmentation in hardrock mining, the significance of the costs of blast-induced rockmass damage in terms of mining efficiency and safety is becoming increasingly recognized. There is no straightforward and systematic method of adequately measuring blast damage in on-going mining operations. This paper considers various techniques available to measure blast damage, making particular reference to recent underground hardrock mine studies. It concludes by proposing a damage audit procedure for integration into routine mine production control.

The existing construction and demolition (C and D) waste recycling technologies and standards have been essentially focused on the production and use of coarse recycled aggregates. Very few papers focus on the production of recycled sand, although some previous results show that fine aggregates fraction represents around 40 to 60% (in mass) of the Brazilian waste and it is usually used as road sub-base or disposed in landfills. The quality of the recycled aggregate is strictly related to the content of porous and low strength phases, mainly the patches of cement remaining on recycled aggregate surface. Some technologies have already been described in the literature, even though, to the moment none of these technologies has clearly succeeded in reaching the large market available. This paper presents a summary of the main properties of the sand produced from C and D waste by tertiary crushing at vertical shaft impact crusher (VSI). Additionally mineral processing technologies were applied on the attained product, such as gravity concentration by shaking table and spirals and removal of cement paste by attrition. The main properties of recycled sand are discussed and compared to the previous C and D waste, respectively: particle size distribution, particle shape, chemical composition, cement paste content and porosity. The results demonstrates that the crushing allowed producing a VSI-sand with low porosity and water absorption due to the increasing on the content of silicates from natural rock phases and increasing liberation between these phases and porous cement paste; the particles from the attained product presented also a better shape (sphericity and aspect ratio). The attrition tests assayed on VSI recycled fine aggregates accomplished a further selective disaggregation of cement paste and other porous materials - the porosity was reduced from 10% to 7%. The concentration by shaking table at narrow sieve fractions led to a product with low porosity and reduced content of cement paste, however, concentration on spirals did not succeed since separation was performed essentially by the size of the particles. The heavy product from shaking table represented almost 75% in weight and has less than 60% recovery of CaO+LOI, and expressive reduction on porosity. The aim of producing sand from construction and demolition waste through mineral processing unit operations changes the recycling approach and contributes for up cycling the recycled sand. The exhaustion of sand deposits on Brazilian large centers, the increasing price and the construction boom encourages the development of alternative materials as construction raw material. Oil and .gas reservoirs exist under pressure within the pore spaces of rock structures or traps. Wells are drilled to produce these reservoirs. Under primary operation, the natural energy of expanding fluids in and adjacent to the reservoir forces or drives oil and gas to the wells. There are three basic sources of energy: dissolved gas, water, and gas cap. Typical recovery by primary methods is only 10 to 25 per cent of the oil in place for the dissolved gas drive but is generally higher for the others. Secondary recovery involves the injection of water or gas to supplement natural energy, thereby increasing recovery over that obtainable by primary operation alone. In many cases ultimate recovery with secondary methods is 1.2 to 2.0 times the expected primary recovery. The type programme adaptable in a field depends on its 'primary performance and on certain reservoir characteristics. In the United States, application of secondary recovery methods is becoming increasingly important. About 22 per cent of United States oil production now comes from fields in which injection projects are operating. In 1953, nearly 1.4 million barrels of oil daily came from such fields, more than double the amount in the early 40's. Ultimate primary recovery from known pools is estimated at roughly 73 billion barrels. Secondary recovery projects already in operation will increase this to almost 80 billion, an increase of almost 10 per cent. Unitized secondary recovery projects have been very successful. From unitized projects alone, industry reserves of oil in the United States have been increased by 3 1/2 billion barrels. In Canada, secondary recovery has not been so wide spread mainly because D-3 reef reservoirs which have held the major reserves are under water drive. However, appreciable amounts of water are being injected in the Redwater D-3, Leduc D-2 and Joarcum Viking reservoirs, and gas in the Golden Spike D-3. In both countries, possible achievements in increased recovery through secondary recovery methods now in use and by new ones which may be developed through research and field trial are a challenge to the scientist and the industry.

For every blast pattern, zones of unique material types need to be classified before mining. Most material types can be summarized into different kinds of ore and waste. Blocks generated from blasthole assays are too small to be selectively mined so areas with a single material classification meeting the mine’s selective mining unit must be defined. Current industry standard practices are to manually draw ore/waste dig limits but this process is subjective and results in quantities of dilution and ore loss which can be improved upon to enhance the profitability of mining operations. Two weeks production data from a homogeneous Cu porphyry and heterogeneous Manto-type Cu deposit are used to assess the variability in the hand-drawn dig limits for 20 geologists, mining engineers, or ore control specialists and are compared with the optimal ore/waste delineation. The profit for 20 distinct hand-drawn dig limits for the homogeneous mine ranged by 3.7% from $10.5 million to $10.9 million averaging at $10.8 million. The percent range nearly doubled for the more heterogeneous mine at 5.9% from $17.9 million to $19.0 million averaging at $18.6 million. Using the optimal ore waste delineation, the profit increased to $11.0 million (1.9% increase) and $19.3 million (7.0% increase) for the homogeneous and heterogeneous deposits respectively. The natural variability, diggability requirement, and selectivity are identified as the main drivers of ore loss and dilution. Recommendations are provided for reducing the subjectivity in manual hand-drawn dig limits by integrating dig limit optimization algorithms as a tool to assist practitioners.

The Siemens VAI software model DynaPhase calculates thermodynamic properties depending on the chemical analysis of steel. It can be used online together with Siemens VAI’s secondary cooling model SIMETAL Dynacs 3D which is a unique feature. Offline it can be used to investigate the thermodynamic properties of steel grades and therefore supports the development of new grades. The core of DynaPhase is a substitutional solution model for the Gibbs free energy to calculate multi-component phase diagrams. The parameters of this model are determined by employing the CALPHAD approach. This model is combined with a microsegregation model to account for the interdendritic solidification process. New DSC (differential scanning calometry) measurements of the department of metallurgy of the Mining University of Leoben have been used to improve the DynaPhase database for high Al or Si concentrations. By comparing this experimental data to calculations it has been found that some of the widely used commercial software tools do not describe the ternary system FeAlC for high aluminum concentration correctly. In this paper we will show how thermal properties of high Al grades change with the optimized database and what impact this has on the secondary cooling of continuous casting, e.g. how the solidus point shifts on the strand. Moreover we will show that the online use of DynaPhase has many advantages for the production. Since DynaPhase uses the actual chemical analysis of the steel grade and not just concentration ranges or averaged concentrations it is possible to optimize the cooling strategy during casting for the actual chemical analysis of the actual heat.

The expanding volume of maritime coal transportation is intensifying the problems concerning large vessel service port construction, transshipment and environmental control. The major problem is the transshipment of coal. Customary methods for bulk transfer must be improved and/or new systems developed. Slurry unloading has a key role in the new systems. The present report reviews progress in slurry transportation research which has been done in Japan since the 1960s when large scale experiments for domestic transportation were done. Experiments on the effects of vibration on the slurry cargo and on reslurrying are discussed.

Through the USGS National Coal Availability pro-gram, two San Juan Basin studies have been completed. The study areas are in the northwest Bisti field, Fruitland Formation and in the eastern Standing Rock field, Menefee Formation. Original resources are 4.66 Gt and 3.46 Gt (5.14 billion stand 3.82 billion st), respectively, in the Bisti and Standing Rock areas. Bisti coal resources are greatly reduced by the Bisti-De-Na-Zin wilderness area (1.13 Gt (1.25 billion st)). Technological restrictions remove 31% from Standing Rock original resource. Available resources are 60% (2.79 Gt(3.07 billion st)) of the Bisti original resource and66% (2.26 Gt (2.49 billion st)) of the original Standing Rock resource.

O aço inoxidável ferrítico 409 é um aço suscetível a grande quantidade de inclusões. Determinar a origem das inclusões não é uma tarefa fácil e o conhecimento dos processos que fazem parte das etapas de produção do aço aliados a um bom método de caracterização são pontos importantes na identificação da origem das inclusões e solução de problemas de qualidade. A proposta deste é trabalho caracterizar inclusões no aço AISI 409 em todas as etapas de produção na Aciaria utilizando técnicas de microscopia e análise química. Amostras do aço líquido e escória foram retiradas em cada etapa de produção. Análises de composição química do aço e escória foram realizadas através de espectrometria de energia dispersiva de raios X (EDS). As inclusões no aço foram examinadas através de um microscópio óptico com analisador de imagem, quantificadas e caracterizadas em termos de composição química no MEV-EDS. Os resultados mostraram que a composição química das inclusões modifica de acordo com o tratamento em cada etapa de processo e a condição de limpidez da corrida é afetada após adições de Ti no Forno Panela e no distribuidor do lingotamento contínuo.

The advent of new methods of roasting, “flash roasting and fluidisation”, which are now under development, combined with the use of oxygen-enriched air, may markedly increase the SO2 content of roaster smokes. Skogmo suggests that the production of smokes containing as much as 50 per cent SO2 should be feasible. The use of flash smelting processes may well enable a similar increase in the SO2 content of smelter smokes to be made. In this event the recovery of sulphur would be greatly cheapened and the process might well be much more economic, even if allowance is made for the cost of generating the oxygen

Deformable materials are sometimes added to ventilation stopping constructions to prevent damage caused by convergence in coal mines. However, adding deformable materials can significantly reduce the capacity of a stopping to resist transverse loading. As part of its mining health and safety program, the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) has conducted research on the effect of various materials with different deformation properties on the transverse loading capability of a stopping wall. Based on a three-point hinge method of failure, a half-wall method of testing in the NIOSH Mine Roof Simulator was used to simulate full-scale wall behavior. This simulated the fracture initiation and eventual failure of the stoppings from transverse loading. The impact of the modulus of elasticity of various deformable materials was examined in this study. A polystyrene foam block with a low modulus of elasticity, which is commonly used as a deformable material, was shown to degrade the transverse load capacity of the stopping by as much 95%. Other materials with higher modulus of elasticity preserved more of the transverse load capacity of the stopping, but were not able to absorb as much convergence. This paper presents the results of a parametric study that quantifies the impact of various deformable materials in block stopping construction under transverse load conditions. Mine operation strategies are commonly optimised with a net present value (NPV) maximisation objective. There are well known properties of a typical mining project optimised for NPV, including high production rates and declining cut-off grade schedules. In practice, however, frequently there are operations that diverge from such NPV-maximising properties. Although a range of reasons for this can be at play, one possible explanation is that operators intuitively adjust their strategies to compensate for the flaws inherent to NPV maximisation. In particular, NPV analysis does not reflect the benefits of managerial flexibility inherent in a mining plan. Real options valuation (ROV) is an alternative approach that addresses this issue. We compare the properties of NPV and ROV optimisation solutions generated for the same scenario. Our simple case study demonstrates that the presence of real operating options in the optimisation model not only entails increased project value as expected, but also tends to encourage lower processing capacity (with lower associated capital cost), higher cut-off grades and greater use of stockpiles.CITATION:Elkington, T and Gould, J, 2012. Higher employer costs and increased employee benefits will result from the current sweeping revisions of the un-employment insurance system now receiving consideration before Parliament. The new legislation, the Un-employment Insurance Act, 1971, will substantially increase the unemployment insurance costs of many employers through an increase in the level of employer contributions -generally, employer contributions will go to 1.4 times employee costs -as well as by extending coverage to many classes of employees now exempt. Under the new legislation, executives, technicians, teachers, institutional workers and others will be covered, and eligible for the higher benefits which it provides. For the first time, absence from work because of illness or accident may qualify individuals for unemployment insurance benefits.

The West Kentucky Division of Island Creek Coal Company, which is a wholly owned subsidiary of Occidental Petroleum Corporation, operates the new Hamilton Mine. It is located six miles West of Morganfield, Kentucky, in the Northwest section of Union County, adjacent to the Ohio River in Lock 50. On July 15, 1968, a unique new coal conveying system was put in operation. This system consists of eight conveyor units carrying coal from the bottom of the mine slope ultimately to barges on the Ohio River. It is over two miles in length and has a total of 3175 connected horsepower. The river loading conveyor is the longest 72" wide conveyor in operation in this country.

This paper presents the results of research aimed at proposing new solutions in the area of belt conveyor elements. Many factors, such as energy consumption costs, and operating costs of belt conveyor elements, including belts, idlers and drives have an impact on the operational costs of conveyors. The paper presents special tests of new materials for the bottom cover of an energy-saving belt conveyor, which decrease rolling resistance. It also presents large-scale in-situ tests of a high-output belt conveyor for the purpose of simultaneous measurements of various types of conveyor belts (standard vs several energysaving types) under typical operating conditions of a lignite surface mine. Improvements in materials used for the bottom belt covers, supported by specially developed comprehensive tests of the new types of belts have provided valuable results of various proposed solutions. Since the tests of belts were done at exactly the same time and in the same operating conditions, direct comparison of the results is valid and should lead to a substantial decrease in the conveyors? drives? energy consumption, which will improve the effectiveness of belt transport and minimize its negative influence on the environment.

In the ideal world of an underground mining engineer, all narrow vein orebodies would be perfectly straight and continuous, thus would be a dream to mine. However, this is usually not the case. Narrow vein orebodies generally occur in association with shear zones and while shear zones do form linear trends, they most commonly preserve undulating expressions that need to be closely monitored, particularly when overprinted by post-formed structures. The surge in mines using fibrecrete as a primary form of ground support effectively reduces the time available for geological interpretation down to a 30 minute window between bogging and shotcreting. Thus, if the quality of the data collected is not up to scratch, then there is only a limited ability to reassess using 2D face photographs. To negate this, Xstrata Nickel AustralasiaÆs Cosmos mine has upgraded its data collection procedure. Geological information is now collected using photogrammetry survey, producing 3D images of the drive. Once created, the digital image of the drive is loaded into Vulcan, thus enabling geological interpretation to be carried out along entire drives, between levels and in association with all other data (eg drill holes, seismic data, etc). In addition to this, the 3D image can be used to accurately model the location of the ore, enabling stoping panels to be confidently positioned to maximise grade and minimise dilution. However, with the focus at Cosmos changing from narrow vein mining, to bulk mining methods in a more geotechnically complex terrain, the use of the 3D images has become paramount in understanding the structural geometry. Continual interpretation of the data has enabled drive profiles to be maintained through the increased use of ground support in poor ground and the redesign of development to enable optimal intersection of structures. Nevertheless, while the collection of quality data is important, it is only the effective use of the data, which enables significant gains in understanding.CITATION:Rees, K, 2012. LAGGING technology and the slow spread of information have been the chief obstacles to widespread participation in minimizing the industrial pollution load. These obstacles can be conquered by fact finding and applied research. There are three aspects to the problem of water-borne mineral waste: to minimize the amount being thrown away, to select a predisposal treatment, and to use the products or dispose of them. It is often possible to minimize the waste by making very minor changes in the process that produces it. For example, a manufacturer of automobile bumpers greatly reduced the dragout 'from a plating bath by modifying the design and position of two boltholes.' A plater of automobile hubcaps installed a drainage bar and decreased the loss of chrome-plating solution to the rinse water by about 80 pct.' The mill at a western mine found it possible to discard 60 to 70 pct of an ore with minimum treatment," so that the processing effort could be concentrated on a high-graded slime, with significant reduction in costs and improvement in recovery. The possibilities for waste reduction through process changes are limited only by the imagination. A recent patent points out the advantages of using No. 1 fuel oil instead of water in wet-process cement making;& the fuel oil presumably has better properties than water for this purpose and is said to be almost com'pletely recovered or utilized, so that there is no waterborne waste. Recycling to reduce wastes and improve process economy is very well illustrated in vanadium and uranium recoveries from relatively low grade ore. Ores containing 6 pct calcium carbonate were found to give poor vanadium recovery by the salt-roasting process because the vanadium was converted to water-insoluble calcium vanadate. Following the salt-roasting process, sulfuric acid was used to leach the uranium. Enough calcium sulfate was formed

The deposition of octadecylamine (ODA) at the KCI crystal/NaCI-KCI brine interface was investigated using atomic force microscopy (AFM). The AFM images of freshly cleaved KCI specimens immersed in KCI-NaCI saturated brine at room temperature reveal disappearance with time of the atomic steps and formation of cubic NaC1 crystals. These crystals were found to form when the specimen was withdrawn from the saturated solution. Depending on the way of contacting the specimens with the octadecylamine dispersion, the AFM images show huge differences in the deposition patterns of ODA on KCI crystals. Adequate dispersion was found to help the formation of quite even ODA coverage. The coverage was several monolayers thicker when air/brine/solid contact took place, suggesting that in the potash flotation the collector is likely to be carried to the solid surfaces by air bubbles. The presence of methyl-isobutyl carbinol (M IBC) enhanced the dispersion of ODA in brine, thus helping the spreading of the surfactant on the KCI crystal surface.

Two of the aluminum-alloy systems previously studied-the alumi-num-titanium and the aluminum-chromium-exhibit a peritectic reaction at the extreme aluminum end of the diagram. Preliminary work indi-cated that the aluminum-zirconium and certain other aluminum systems were similar in this respect. The present paper, the twentieth of a series from the Aluminum Research Laboratories, reports the results of a recent investigation of equilibrium relations in aluminum-zirconium alloys of high purity, which confirm the preliminary observations. PREVIOUS INVESTIGATIONS There has been only one investigation of the aluminum end of the aluminum-zirconium system. Sykes1 prepared and studied alloys containing 0 to 70 per cent Zr. The lowering of the freezing point of aluminum by the addition of zirconium was found to be very little, if any (less than 2°C.). He placed the solid solubility of zirconium in aluminum at room temperature between 0.57 and 0.97 per cent. A few other investigators have attempted to determine the com-position of the intermetallic compounds occurring in this system. Hönigschmid2 obtained the compound ZrAl3 as a by-product during the preparation of ZrSi2. He made no attempt to prepare other aluminum-zir-conium compounds. Weiss and Newmann3 prepared an alloy by heating aluminum with a double fluoride of potassium and zirconium. When this alloy was treated consecutively with caustic soda and hydrochloric acid, there was a residue, which contained approximately 72 per cent Zr and 28 per cent Al (Zr3Al4). Marden and Rich4 prepared an alloy in the same way, treated it with caustic soda, and obtained a residue of silver-white crystals, which contained 70 per cent Zr and 30 per cent Al (Zr3Al4).
