Two examples are presented to show how first-principles – physical-dynamic, here termed behavioural modelling, is used to build digital twins of unit processes or plant sections. A digital twin equips the metallurgist, engineer, or manager with a powerful tool to conduct model-based design, solve process problems and improve operations. It is particularly relevant in the metallurgical industry where plant behaviour is highly integrated, rates respond to particle dynamics in complicated ways and mineral flows across flowsheet boundaries are variable. The two examples used to illustrate the behavioural modelling methodology are 1) a flotation column unit block and 2) a multi-compartment pressure oxidation (POX) autoclave. It simultaneously accounts for the causality of material and heat flow, takes care of mineral particle dynamics, physical and chemical reaction rates, the plant control system behaviour and operating heuristics. The basic modelling building blocks are briefly reviewed to show how the behavioural modelling attributes constrain the mass and heat flow dynamics to physically realistic values. This is the key aspect that allows project value to be created with minimal input data. Behavioural modelling is especially valuable where the process dynamics are poorly understood or controlled, where data-driven models fail to cope with complex and highly integrated plant behaviour, where quality data is lacking or limited funds are available to generate the data required to fill all the knowledge gaps. The paper uses the flotation column example to show how behavioural modelling and simulation can be used to optimise plant performance, while the multi-compartment POX autoclave model shows how it can be used to diagnose process problems. It also provides a solid basis to add a data-driven component – in other words, it makes a strong case for a hybrid first-principle– data-driven approach to solve process problems, especially where microscopic-level understanding is poor. "Production of industrial minerals remains important to the rural economy of New Mexico. In 2014, 226 active mines and mills were registered in New Mexico and included four coal, eight potash, 11 metal, 33 industrial mineral and 170 aggregate and stone operations. New Mexico leads U.S. domestic production of potash, perlite, zeolite and travertine. Other production includes aggregate, humate, pumice, gypsum, salt, common and fire clay, scoria, limestone, fly ash, cement, magnetite, silica and decorative stone. New Mexico also has the potential for additional production of industrial minerals. One company is exploring for garnet. Cretaceous black sandstones in the San Juan Basin have drawn interest for titanium, rare earth elements (REEs), niobium and zircon, and other REE deposits are being explored. REE-thoriumuranium veins have been found in the Gallinas, Capitan and Cornudas Mountains and Laughlin Peak-Chico Hills. Exploration for beryllium has occurred in the Ojo Caliente No. 2, Cuchillo Negro and Victorio mining districts. Companies also are examining high-calcium limestone and high-magnesium dolomite for potential development, while aggregate continues to be important in urban areas and along highways. IntroductionIndustrial minerals and rocks are literally the building blocks of our way of life. They are an exceptionally diverse and vital group of raw materials that underpin almost all aspects of human activity, infrastructure and standard of living. Industrial minerals and rocks are used in the manufacture of many products, from ceramics to plastics to refractories to paper. Although industrial minerals permeate nearly every aspect of daily life, their presence and their roles are typically invisible. A widely used definition of industrial minerals and rocks is “any rock, mineral, or other naturally occurring substance of economic value, exclusive of metal ores, mineral fuels, and gemstones: one of the nonmetallics” (Bates, 1975). This definition includes the important construction materials sector as well as specialized industrial minerals, but complex interactions between consumer industries produce a number of apparent anomalies to this definition. Some metals are included as industrial minerals because their use is industrial rather than as a metal. Sulfur is now predominantly extracted as a byproduct of cleaning natural gas, one of the world’s major energy fuels.Production of industrial minerals has been and remains important to the rural economy of New Mexico. Industrial minerals constitute nearly 41 percent of the more than $3.1 billion generated by mineral production in New Mexico in 2014 (Table 1). In order to overcome some of the deficiencies associated with conventional fine coal cleaning methods, a novel process known as microbubble column flotation (MICROCEL?) was developed at Virginia Tech. This article provides an overview of recent commercialization efforts and in-plant testing of this technology. The results of the in-plant test work indicate that the MICROCEL technology offers several advantages for the upgrading of difficult to clean coals. The test data have also been used to develop guidelines for the design of coal flotation columns and to validate existing scale-up procedures.

"This paper will explain how the Contractor and Owner avoided a contractual dispute involving characterization, impacts, and final remedy for challenging ground conditions encountered during drill and blast excavation of the starter tunnel required for launch of the tunnel boring machine (TBM). During excavation more than 600 feet underground, the Contractor encountered a large complex fault zone subject to more than 14 bar of water pressure. Successive ground inflows from the fault complex over a six-month period presented significant technical and partnership challenges for the team and ultimately delayed the project by nearly one year. This paper will discuss how the Contractor, Owner, and their respective consultants worked together to address these challenges, make decisions, and ultimately move the project to successful completion. PROJECT BACKGROUND AND NEED Seven states of the western United States of America rely heavily on the Colorado River and its tributaries for their water supply. The primary source of water for the Colorado River is winter snow that falls in the mountains ringing the Colorado River basin, including the Rocky Mountains, the Wind River Mountains, and the Uinta Mountains. Flows in the Colorado River vary significantly from year to year, depending on the amount of snow and rain deposited in the basin. During the 1980s and 1990s, snowfall was relatively abundant and Colorado River flows were high on average. Beginning in the year 2000 and continuing to the present day, snowfall has been well below documented historical averages and Colorado River flows have diminished. In fact, a trend toward diminishing flows is evident during the period of the historical record. This variability in Colorado River flows and the trend to lower flows is represented in the following Figure 1."

In 2009, the Queensland Government developed a series of amendments to environmental authorities (EAs) for mines throughout the Fitzroy Basin in response to studies that assessed the cumulative impacts of mine water discharges in the basin. One of the key amendments was the requirement for all mines in the Fitzroy Basin to develop and implement a receiving environment monitoring program (REMP). The intent of the REMPs was to provide baseline information on the condition of the receiving environments of the mines and any impacts resulting from release of mine-affected water. Since this time, the requirement to complete a REMP has been incorporated into new or revised EAs for mines (including metalliferous mines) in other regions, as well as for other industries that discharge to natural watercourses (such as coal seam gas). This paper discusses the approaches that can be used to incorporate biological monitoring and direct toxicity assessments into REMPs. It highlights the importance of collecting biological data using sound experimental design principles to investigate whether releases resulted in environmental harm; and the use of monitoring data, coupled with direct toxicity assessments, for setting more realistic, site-specific trigger values and release limits (compared to the default guidelines such as Australian and New Zealand Environment and Conservation Council (ANZECC), which may not be appropriate to the region). During 1996 and 1997, Oregon experienced flooding on a scale not seen in many years. Some gravel pits located near rivers experienced erosion and, in several cases, breaches between the gravel pit and the river. Initial evaluation of several sites that experienced breaches indicates that impacts to the river system are complex and vary significantly from site to site. The impacts to the adjacent river system may be viewed as both positive and negative. Several floodplain-mining sites in Oregon located in areas of historic river flow have reverted to active riverbed. In many cases, state and federal fisheries biologists and university researchers see the resulting increase in channel complexity and habitat as favorable. The Oregon Department of Geology and Mineral Industries -Mined Land Reclamation Program (DOGAMI-MLR) is performing additional studies of the impacts to the off-channel areas that resulted from the 1996 floods. More data is needed to make sound floodplain decisions regarding mining.

"A survey of 281 mineral exploration agreements examines the ratios among three ways that may be used to purchase an interest in a mineral property, viz: pay cash, pay shares and make future expenditures on the property.The dollar value of the future expenditures exceeds that of cash or shares by about nine times in most of the 110 agreements that contain cash-expenditure or share-expenditure components. Results suggest that cash and shares are treated about the same in terms of value.Buyers and sellers have opposing priorities for the way that they prefer to purchase a mineral property. These opposing priorities should give rise to a perceived 50:50 balance between cash/share payment and future expenditures to satisfy the idealized situation described by most definitions of fair market value (FMV). This balance between cash/share payments and future expenditures appears to be rationalized in negotiations to a FMV when expenditures are nine times greater than cash and/or payments.On this basis, it is proposed that the FMV of a property may be determined by aggregating the dollar amount of the cash/share payments plus one-ninth the dollar value of future expenditures, as set forth in the respective purchase agreement, and proportionately applying such aggregate to full property value."

WILLIAMS, San Francisco, Cal.-Is the Union Avila plant run as a topping plant or as a dehydrating plant? A. F. L. BELL, San Francisco, Cal.-Both. It takes off an average of 20 per cent. water besides topping the oil. Part of the crude oil is run through an electrical separator before running to the topping plant, but the entire crude averages about 20 per cent. when it enters the topping plant. DAVID T. DAY, Washington, D. C.-I suppose most of the work contemplated in these large topping plants is simply to deal with topping the oils with only a small percentage of water in them. A. F. L. BELL.-Not more than 2 per cent. of water can be handled in ordinary stills without causing trouble. At our Gavotte refinery, where the oil runs from 15 to 30 per cent. water, we carry 20 lb., pressure oil our stills to hold the framing down, we can do that with small stills, with large one's it would not be safe; but with a retort, the quantity of water contained in the oil does not affect its working. It simply means additional fuel to evaporate the water.

A two-year test conducted by the USBM's Spokane Mining Research Center (SMRC) has proven the feasibility of the yielding rockbolt, a concept which may prove very useful to the mining industry by providing ground support under a variety of conditions. The yielding rockbolt was originally developed in South Africa3 to overcome the limitations of conventional bolting in rock subjected to high-stress or rock burst conditions. The yielding effect is obtained by fitting the bolt prior to thread rolling with a smooth-bore die of internal diameter slightly larger than the shank diameter but smaller than the rolled thread diameter.

Uma das maneiras de se reduzir os custos no transporte de cargas é aumentando a quantidade de carga transportada por vagão, isto eleva a tensão no eixo do vagão e, consequentemente, a roda deve possuir maior dureza sem perda da tenacidade para suportar o desgaste. Para atingir os níveis de dureza necessários estão sendo desenvolvidas rodas ferroviárias com aços microligados ao nióbio (Nb), vanádio (V), molibdênio (Mo) e titânio. A empresa MWL Brasil fabricante de rodas ferroviárias forjadas desenvolveu dois aços microligados: 1° contendo o elemento microligante vanádio (0,13 % em peso) e 2° contendo os microligantes nióbio+molibdênio (0,014 % + 0,12 %, respectivamente), ambos os aços com 0,7 % C. Estes aços foram analisados microestruturalmente e mecanicamente a partir da roda ferroviária pronta. A microestrutura destes aços é composta basicamente por ferrita-perlita. Nas propriedades mecânicas o aço ao V apresentou os melhores resultados em todos os ensaios (tração na temperatura ambiente e 540 ºC, energia absorvida no ensaio Charpy e KIC) quando comparado ao aço sem microligantes ou com a adição de Nb+Mo. O melhor desempenho do aço ao V foi atribuído ao seu menor tamanho de grão austenítico e espaçamento interlamelar da perlita mais refinado.

This study is a survey of the current "state-of-the-art" of commercially-available sonar tools to monitor the true shape of man-made cavities within the Hutchinson Salt of south-central Kansas. The work entailed ferreting out the available information, most of which is proprietary in nature; then examining actual existing conditions and arriving at a reasonable scientific evaluation of the method. Our studies were confined to one LPG field and two brine well operations in south-central Kansas. No field testing of any devices was performed, only questioning user firms, and studying cores, logs, and sonar surveys graciously made available by the companies we have contacted. Since these data are still somewhat proprietary, the company participants have asked that their company names be omitted from this presentation.

During most of its history, the metallurgical industry has been seen as a source of pollution for the environment. However, during the second half of the 20th century, as the world environmental legislation became more protective and the global environmental conscience consolidated, this landscape began to change. Metallurgical activities have become increasingly related to the social and environmental impacts caused by human activities. With the adoption of environmental management in steel plants, there has been a significant change in steel-related activities which have begun to introduce modern plants, managed with environmental, social and productive efficiency. More and more, steel companies search for a decrease in negative impacts of their industrial operations on the environment, fitting them to the current environmental legislation and even increasing productivity and profitability. The steel industry has started to become a clean and more efficient industry. This work presents a case study of a sustainable steel plant project, located in an environmental preservation area. The project includes treatment and reuse of industrial liquid effluents, air emissions control, noise control, recycling, recovery and adequate waste management. It also incorporates production processes using clean technologies, capable of coproducing energy resources which may be used in the plant showing how is it possible to produce steel with environmental and social responsibility and even increase the enterpriseÆs profitability.

Controlling dust generation and keeping it below permissible limits to meet federal dust standards at the working face of a roomand-pillar coal mine is a challenge for a mine operator. With the recent changes in federal dust regulations requiring lower worker exposure, maintaining compliance has become increasingly difficult. The current most effective practice of dust control at a continuous miner face in an underground mine is the use of a flooded-bed scrubber. A study carried out by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) indicated that a flooded-bed scrubber could achieve cleaning efficiencies between 58 and 90%. But, the operation of such a system is maintenance intensive. The flooded-bed scrubber screen becomes clogged with dust particles and requires frequent cleaning to maintain performance. However, the dust control issue is not solely a mining industry problem. Other industries face similar issues. The University of Kentucky collaborated with Toyota Motor Manufacturing on the development of a novel wet scrubber, called the vortecone scrubber, for capturing oversprayed paint particles in automotive paint booths. The vortecone scrubber achieved a cleaning efficiency of 99% and required minimal maintenance. This study aims to assess the ability of this vortecone scrubber to capture respirable dust in an underground coal mine. The paper presents the results of computational fluid dynamics (CFD) modeling of this vortecone scrubber. It discusses the effects of air quantity and dust particle size on the performance of the scrubber.

"Collaboration among Ventilation Engineers, Mine Inspectors, worker representatives, health and safety officers and management is key to an effective operational mine ventilation management. Mine ventilation training, ventilation survey reports for mine stakeholders and interaction with mine frontline workers and management concerning safety, energy saving, assets management and maintenance are effective tools in implementing best industry practices and significant reduction of ventilation operating costs without compromising safety. These approaches may not be new to well established mining companies but the real dilemma is how to implement them effectively and this is what this paper will address.INTRODUCTIONManaging an effective mine ventilation system is becoming increasingly challenging, especially during tough economic times in the mining industry. Management strives for more production while frontline miners work hard to surpass the production targets, thus improving their incentives and above all aiming to enhance the prospects of their job security when the mining industry is facing challenging times. Taking shortcuts by not fully following the safety regulations or industry best practices are often notable, resulting in the rise of Workers Compensation Board claims and temporary shutdowns of active workings, compromising productivity and increasing the operating costs.In accordance with the Mines regulations in various jurisdictions in Canada and the US, it is evident that companies adhere to establishing basic ventilation management systems through the provision of the code of practice, procedures, work practices and standards/guidelines. This is aimed at ensuring the health and safety of underground workers (de Souza, 2017). However, the challenge to many operations is the improper implementation of the mine ventilation regulations including some managers showing reckless disregard for workers safety by focusing on production and not worrying to address ventilation problems (Steven & O'Keefe, 2010). Other challenges facing effective ventilation management include inadequate training of frontline workers on ventilation system and hazards associated with poor ventilation systems such as toxic gases, dust, heat, and underground explosions (Mufson et al., 2010; Suvar et al., 2017); friction between mine managers and the mine inspectors (Mufson et al., 2010), improper maintenance of ventilation system and inventory management, among others."

Approach A water resistant extensometer is made by enclosing a rod-actuated transducer in a telescoping tube which is enclosed within an oil-filled outer housing. How It Works To assemble a water resistant extensometer, a cylinder -shaped transducer and two support rings are pushed into the small-diameter section of the telescoping tube where the transducer is held in place by friction. The outside of the small-diameter section of the telescoping tube is then greased and slid into the slightly larger-diameter section. See drawing. The cylinder-shaped transducer contains a potentiometer whose actuating arm is attached to a stainless steel extension rod that passes through one end of the telescoping tube. A similar rod is attached to the opposite end of the transducer body, and extends through the other end of the telescoping tube. Data on the accident experience of the pebble-phosphate industry in Florida for 1930 and 1940 are combined in this report with statistics for the 9-year period 1930-38, inclusive, which were published in Information Circulars 69173/, 69684/, and 71005/. The periodic compilation and publication of such data enable the pebble-phosphate industry, as well as other industries, to consider the relative hazards, compare experience, and thereby help to prevent accidents.
