IT has been reported frequently that the hardness and strength vary over the cross section of cold-worked, particularly cold-drawn, material. Brass rod and wire usually have been found to possess a maximum strength and hardness near the surface.1,2 According to Sachs,' the center fiber has about the same strength as a wire stretched by the same amount in a tensile-test machine, the strength increasing toward the surface (Fig. I). These differences are particularly large for wire given a small reduction on drawing through a die with a wide opening. However, with increasing reduction and hardness, a tendency to form a thin soft surface skin becomes apparent. On the contrary, copper wire has usually been found to possess a soft surface skin3-5 and it has been reported by Harris3 that during the cold-drawing of hot-rolled wire the surface layer becomes increasingly softer than the core, while the layer of maximum strength moves toward the core, it being found near the surface at first. The purpose of geochemical research in the Alabama copper belt is to re-evaluate geochemical prospecting methods as related to igneous and metamorphic rocks in a humid climate. It is also a correlation of laboratory research on copper mineral solubility with geochemical anomalies over known mineral deposits. Geochemical prospecting in warm humid climates involves different problems and conditions than geochemical prospecting in semiarid areas. Stems and others (1972) reported soil surveys in a humid tropical environment in Bahia, Brazil, were not effective in outlining areas of copper mineralization. Clarke (1971) reported false anomalies in lateritic soils in Alabama over mafic rocks. Bjorklund (1971) reported biogeochemical sampling in Finland was ineffective in detailed work outlining potential mineralized areas, although it may serve to indicate regional areas of high mineral potential. During this investigation, water, stream sediments, residual soil, and organic matter, mainly twigs, were collected from three known copper-mineralized areas. Samples were selected so as to cross mineralized outcrops and results were correlated with copper stability charts as reported by Silman (1958) and Schmitt (1962). The geochemical research performed in Alabama should be applicable to other humid areas. Geologic, Climatic, and Pedologic Setting The area of investigation is in the southern end of the Appalachian eugosyncline in eastern Alabama. It includes the Hatchet Creek prospect, Pyriton mining district, and Stone Hill copper mine. The copper mineralization is in calcium-rich metasediments that lie along the western flank of a high rank metamorphic belt. All three deposits are in the uplands of the Ashland Plateau section of the Piedmont physiographic province. The Hatchet Creek copper prospect (Clarke, 1963; 1971) consists of three mineralized areas that contain pyrrhotite, pyrite, and chalcopyrite in small crisscrossing veinlets.

A typical three-phase submerged-arc furnace for production of silicon metal and ferrosilicon has arc currents ~100 kA, phase voltages ~100 V and total furnace power ~10 - 60 MW. The arcs burn in gas filled cavities or "craters", where the main atomic components of the plasma mixture are silicon, oxygen and carbon. Two quite different simulation models for high-current AC arcs have been developed: the simple Channel Arc Model (CAM), and the more sophisticated Magneto-Fluid-Dynamic Model (MFD). These models have been described extensively and results reported at INFACON-8 and INFACON-9, respectively. The coupling between the arcs and the AC power source is described by a complete three-phase Electric Circuit Model. Recent numerical modelling studies of industrial AC arcs show that the boundary conditions at the cathode and anode are critical for the simulation results. A novel Cathode/Anode Sub-Model for high-current AC arcs that treats both cathode and anode indicates a completely different cathode behaviour than previously assumed. A cathode spot which serves a high-current electric arc is shown to be dominated by the energy impact from the arc. This leads to lower cathode fall voltage than obtained from previously developed models. The anode fall voltage is negative, as the main function of the potential barrier is to repel plasma electrons. The cathode spot is diffuse in the sense that the arc in fact contracts away from the cathode. Simulation results are compared to measurements on both industrial furnaces and smaller scale pilot furnaces. An important conclusion, supported by our arc studies, is that the arc length in silicon metal and ferrosilicon furnaces does not exceed 15 cm and the arc may burn anywhere on the electrode, not necessarily beneath the electrode tip.

"The Dulles Silver Line Phase II is an 11.4 mile extension of the Washington Area Metro Transit Authority’s Silver line in northern Virginia. There are three miles of elevated guideway, which are supported on 188 large diameter mono-shafts founded within the Triassic Geologic Aged Culpeper Fault Basin. Three lateral load tests were performed on fully instrumented test shafts. The challenge in developing the load testing program was how to reproduce the effects of the extremely high design loads along the test shafts, considering the limitations of the load test equipment. Development, execution, and analysis of the lateral load test program is discussed.INTRODUCTIONPlans for Dulles Silver Line Phase II include two Aerial Guideway sections on elevated track, the Main Line and Yard Leads. The Aerial Guideways are supported on mono-shafts (single, largediameter drilled shafts) socketed into rock. Lateral loads are resisted primarily through the stiffness of the shaft and the geotechnical resistance of the rock socket. The monoshafts were designed in accordance with AASHTO LRFD 2014. Based on our preliminary analyses, the production mono shafts were expected to consist of 6.5, 7.5, and 8.5 foot diameter drilled shafts with rock socket lengths varying between 8 and 34 feet (averaging 14 feet). Table 1 summarizes the maximum service load combinations for each size production shaft along the aerial guideway alignment.GEOLOGYThe project is located within the Piedmont Province, a major physiographic province on the east coast of the USA extending from Alabama to Pennsylvania. Within the Piedmont, a number of Mesozoic basins formed in rift valleys. Dulles Airport is located in the Culpeper Basin, characterized by a relatively shallow siltstone rock surface compared to the adjacent areas underlain by Piedmont crystalline rocks. The geologic stratigraphy at the load test sites generally consist of residual soils and intermediate geo-material (IGM) overlying siltstone rock. IGM is a term used by Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) to describe residual material as it transitions between soil and rock. For the purposes of the load test, the siltstone rock is classified as fractured rock (RQD<50), and competent rock (RQD=50). Table 2 summarizes the stratigraphy encountered at each test site."

IN 1934 Newfoundland, after extravagant operation based on exaggerated ideas of what she had to work with, became bankrupt, ceased to be a self-governing Dominion, and passed into the hands of a Commission. Since the days of Dawson, Canadians have been taught that no country in the world is as rich as their own. This idea has become a religion; contrary views are heresy, and are suppressed even by technical organizations and government departments. Following the alleged habit of the ostrich, we have buried our heads in the sand and have refused to face the facts. This policy of "to have today and to hell with tomorrow" is now bearing fruit. After forty years of operation on the basis of unlimited natural wealth, with resulting over-expansion, wholesale depletion of capital assets, and huge borrowings, we are, now that our wealth has been shown to be very limited, face to face with the status of Newfoundland. Already, in this Province, commission government of bankrupt municipalities is not uncommon. The ostrich is referred to as the most foolish bird in the world. That is not the case-no ostrich ever hid his head in the sand. In the clear air of his home on the South African veldt, an area characterized by low bushes, he is a conspicuous object. When danger approaches, he lowers his head; matches his background, the bushes; and danger passes him by. This leaves the Canadian, with his head still in the sand, to fill the r61e cast for the ostrich. Fortunately, a few Canadians never did get their heads covered; others are getting them out far enough to see what is going on. Their comments are very much to the point. "Nowhere in the world," says Mr. Meighen, "has more harm been done to any country by an exaggeration of its resources and potentialities than has been done in Canada&apos;.

Steady increases in longwall production have required operators to apply greater quantities of ventilating air in an effort to control and dilute respirable dust. Significant increases in shearer speeds necessitate that longwall supports also be advanced at a faster rate. Both of these factors may contribute to overall respirable dust levels on the longwall face because as supports are lowered and advanced, broken material falling from the top of the canopy is entrained directly into the air stream. To address this issue, the Pittsburgh Research Laboratory collected respirable dust samples from four longwall faces to characterize shield-generated dust. This paper investigates the influence of air velocity and shield advance rates on respirable dust levels. Also discussed are engineering controls currently used to reduce shield dust and alternative controls being investigated by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH).

"We will attempt to explain the basic workings of a modern seismograph and how the recorded data can be interpreted, not only for determining compliance to the regulations, but also in determining whether or not a seismograph record is accurate and valid. We will discuss some parameters that should be included in all seismographic recordings. We will give examples and use overhead slidesto show examples of both accurate and valid recordings, and tampered and inaccurate seismograph recordings. Much of the information presented will be basic in nature, and will reflect the opinions and personal experiences of the author. We ho'pe the listener will gain valuable information concerning the use and interpretation of seismographic data, as well as find interest and sometimes humor in the examples shown."

Historically the insurance industryÆs involvement in any project has been relatively late in the process. Often it was a case of the last item to be ticked off the checklist has been to ensure that the insurance is in place. However, in more recent times insurers have imposed more restrictions on the cover they are prepared to provide, which has in some cases necessitated a change in the contracting structure to accommodate the insurance policy(ies). In addition, changing contractual practices have changed the allocation of risk between the various parties involved. This calls for a more proactive approach to the design and implementation of an insurance program for both the construction and operational phases of any resource project. This paper explores how a risk managed approach to the design and implementation of an insurance program for a resource project can align itself with current management approaches to project development. From the authorsÆ experience, this approach is best adopted early on in the project (often in conjunction with the bankable feasibility study) and follows AZ/NZS4360 to objectively examine and compare a wide range of risk exposures of the project in a time-effective manner across the following areas: personnel; environment; general management; compliance û legislation, systems, protocols; asset management; change management; financial impacts to the organisation; products/services; service delivery; and technology. Having identified and then analysed the risk exposures according to common consequence and likelihood ratings the next step is to develop a risk map of all considered exposures. The true value of this approach lies in the development and implementation of a risk treatment plan for identified exposures where the exposure is unacceptable. The plans will lead to the optimal solution to the appropriate risk prevention, risk mitigation and risk transfer options available. This paper also examines other benefits to the project that may arise from adopting a risk managed approach in addition to the ability to design an insurance program which recognises the exposures and the ability of the organisation (and other project parties) to retain risk.

Production sharing and cost apportionment in joint ventures is commonplace in Australasia today and elsewhere. It is a recognised convention that, with the exception of a free carry situation, joint venture participants usually share the proceeds of the joint venture in direct proportion to their respective participating interest, after having first paid its respective cash calls, in advance, to cover the projectÆs ongoing operating and capital cost requirements.In surface mines, the parties simply pay their way and take their proceeds in this manner. In underground mines, the situation is no different, though treatment of capital, depreciation and tax may differ between the parties. A common feature in many cases is the creation of a joint venture entity to conduct the business. This entity then collects cash from the parties, banks it, employs the staff, runs the operation, provides reports and pays out the proceeds. This convention appears to be relatively simple in application. In practice, it has been known to be complicated in the situation where the participants take their product at the mine gate and undertake their own marketing and selling arrangements. A more complex situation presents itself where the joint venture tenement boundary with an unrelated third party straddles an economic deposit. In this scenario, both the joint venture parties and the third party may wish to mine the deposit, sharing some infrastructure and costs, yet taking their own product as it is produced. A case study outlining such a situation is presented in the paper, outlining firstly how the major cost categories were identified and treated for cost apportionment purposes. Secondly, a mechanism for the equitable apportionment of product is suggested. Finally, issues such as timing and cost reporting are dealt with, together with a checklist of points which should be considered when a similar situation might arise in the future.

With the burgeoning development of precious metals heap leach mining projects throughout the country regulatory agencies are beginning to take a closer look at the short-and long-term environmental consequences of heap leach mining. This increase in regulatory review is occurring on federal, state and local levels, and is affecting both large- and small-scale mining developments. Small-scale mining developments are receiving especially critical regulatory scrutiny because in the eyes of some regulatory agencies, small developers lack the credibility automatically accorded to major mining companies. This is due in part to a bad image of small miners based upon past environmental problems and permit violations caused by a few, small operators. The proponent of a small mining development thus faces special problems during the project permitting process, and must convince the regulatory authorities of his company&apos;s ability and commitment to plan, develop, and decommission a mining operation in compliance with environmental regulations. Not only must the small developer have a thorough understanding of the regulatory requirements affecting his project, he must also devote considerable effort to careful internal planning in order to produce a well organized approach to project permitting. The importance of proper planning cannot be overstated. Project planning is key to convincing the regulatory agencies that the small miner is capable of developing a viable project. More- over, the economics of a small mining project demand permit acquisition at modest cost and in a timely fashion. A well planned permitting effort will thus ensure that permits are received within budget and on schedule. This paper will review the federal, state, and local permitting requirements for heap leach projects, and the variability of these requirements from state to state. The environmental assessment process for projects developed on public lands, and the acquisition of zero- discharge water quality permits, air quality permits, and local special use permits as they apply to small mining developments will be discussed. The paper will conclude with a review of project decommissioning and cyanide neutralization requirements and their implications for small-scale heap leach projects.

"The requirement for environmental approvals and associated environmental impact assessments (EIAs) is now commonly regarded as a key milestone and body of work during project development. EIAs can be undertaken at various phases during project development, generally either:\ during the scoping or prefeasibility studies, where limited project information is available and the mitigation and management measures of the EIA become a set of criteria and commitments that control project design during the feasibility study, as an iterative approach whereby mitigation and management measures are developed through an integrated process with the engineering team, and measures are included in the feasibility study cost model following the feasibility study, where detailed project design information is available, the cost model is complete, and the EIA is an assessment of a fixed project with limited opportunities for mitigation and management measures to be integrated into engineering design. This paper investigates the advantages of integrating EIA into life-of-mine planning during the feasibility study phase, using the Tampakan Copper-Gold Project (the Project) as a case study. The Tampakan Project is located in the Philippines on the southern island of Mindanao. The Project involves the proposed development of three main areas of infrastructure:a large-scale, open pit copper-gold mine and associated mine site infrastructure (including tailings and mine waste storages, fresh water dam, concentrator, etc) a power station, port and filter plant (PPFP), located approximately 60 km from the mine a pipeline and transmission line linking the mine and PPFP sites.Examples of engineering measures developed through an iterative process to mitigate and manage predicted environmental and social impacts include design of water management infrastructure, modification of the disturbance footprint (eg roads realigned to avoid critical habitat) and realignment of project infrastructure to minimise impacted water catchments.CITATION:Blunt, J and Jones, J, 2012. Blast vibration induced by mining activities, such as stope production blasts, could lead to the initiation of seismic events that inflict damage to mine openings. In this paper, the effect of stope production blasts on nearby fault is examined. First, validation of blast vibration attenuation is performed with a numerical model representing a single blast hole through comparison with that calculated from charge-weight scaling law derived from in-situ data. Subsequently, a mine-wide scale model with a fault parallel to a steeply dipping, tabular ore deposit that is mined out with sublevel stoping method is generated, and the stopes are extracted and backfilled with static analysis to simulate burst-prone conditions on the fault. Based on the stress states, dynamic analysis is performed, in which blast vibration is applied to grid points on a stope wall on the hanging wall side. This assumes 9 blast holes located close to the wall, and blast-induced particle velocities that consider the positional relationships between the assumed blast holes and the stope wall are applied. During the dynamic analysis, blast sequence is considered, and stress states and shear displacement on the faults are examined. It is found from results that, after a rise in normal stress on the fault due to compressive waves induced by the blasts, the normal stress decreases because of the reflection of the compressive waves on the fault. The reduction in the normal stress due to the reflected waves is found to be large enough to cause the fault to slip. The results also show that the level of normal stress eventually keeps decreasing with time as the blast sequence proceeds and that an increase in shear displacement on the fault is accompanied by a decrease in normal stress. This study clarifies the mechanism by which blast vibration causes the fault to slip. In addition, the simulation technique to apply blast vibration that takes into account blast sequence and the locations of blast holes to a stope wall is developed.

Marine phosphorite deposits occur in Brazil, in the Bambui Group of late Precambrian or Early Cambrian age. The phosphorite is laminated, isoclinally folded, and is composed of black, elongated apatite pellets and quartz grains cemented by quartz and muscovite. Abundant, narrow quartz veinlets cut through the rock at right angles to the elongation direction of the pellets. The phosphorite is 0 to 80 meters thick and contains 5 to 30 percent P205. The deposit is elongate towards the northeast, and the central, thickest, and richest part is bounded by faults. Measured reserves are about 250 million tonnes that average about 13 percent P205. Preliminary testing indicates that grinding, scrubbing, and desliming will produce a material usable for fertilizer manufacture at a cost competitive with imported phosphate fertilizers.

"Coal spontaneous combustion (SponCom) is a natural phenomenon in underground operations, which can either happen naturally or be triggered by human activities. For underground operations, espe-cially in coal, SponCom can happen frequently as a result of air leakage, although its incubation period may vary depends on types of coal and surrounding environment, resulting in uncertainty in control. In China, most of the underground coal operations now use longwall mining method because of its superior safety, high productivity and efficiency. With an increased popularity, there is also an increasing necessity to study spontaneous combustion, its occurrence and management. There have been many theoretical analysis and experimental studies over the past half century hoping to understand the occurrence of coal combustion and its control measures to better understand the occurrence and to design controlling measures to limit the dam-age it causes. In this paper, research on coal spontaneous combustion fundamentals from these three aspects will be reviewed, gaps highlighted and possible directions for future studies. INTRODUCTION The history of anthropic development is the history of human's energy utilization progress. From the first usage of fire, people have been continuingly seeking energy resources on earth. Coal, as an abundant, economic and convenient source of fuel quickly became indispensable and made significant contribution to economic growth worldwide. With technology and societal development, people are becoming more and more coal-dependent, but at the same time, problems of fossil fuel combustion came into sight. In global coal mining industry, spontaneous combustion has now presented one of the most challenging safety issues, it is also believed that it has contributed significantly toward the climate change. It is essential that more effort be invested to examine the cause of SponCom and its control measures. Coal SponCom is a complex process, with both physical and chemical inter-actions among various interrelated factors such as local airflow distribution, ventilation pressure, methane emissions (if any), and physical surroundings underground. With the advent of powerful computers, simulation techniques and af-fordable modelling packages in recent years, significant advances have been made in understanding sponta-neous combustion. But because of the complex nature of combustion and varying underground conditions, there are still areas that need further examining. This paper will focus on illustrating the current research of coal spontaneous combustion and addressing research gaps and future study areas."

Parts I, II, and III-A of the series have been issued as Information Circulars 6935, 6840, 6948 , and 6957; Part I defines and classifies dusts, indicates sources of exposure, and describes the physiological effects of breathing dusts; Part II-A discusses the principal dust factors producing pulmonary pathology and methods of determination of dust in air; Part II-B presents data on the engineering and medical control in the prevention of dust diseases and general recommendations for their control in industry; and Part III-A deals with the economic and legal aspects of dust diseases in industry.

ABSTRACT Inco’s Iron Ore Recovery Plant was operated by Inco from 1955 to 1980 near Sudbury, Ontario. As exposures to specific nickel substances have been associated with adverse respiratory endpoints it is important to understand processes giving rise to such substances. This manuscript discusses the process and equipment, the propensity for aerosol formation, and operational procedures used by Inco in roasting a pyrrhotite concentrate, reducing the nickel in the formed oxide, leaching the nickel in ammoniacal solution, purifying the resulting solution, making green or black NiO, and producing iron oxide pellets. Industrial hygiene measurements are also reported.

Carbon in the form of coke is used as a reactant in various chemical and metallurgical processes, The high cost of by-product coke along with its periodic lack of availability and high investment necessary for additional by-product recovery facilities indicate the need for a low-cost production unit based on a new procedure for coke manufacture, Traveling-grate coking-stokers were developed by Shawinigan Chemicals Ltd. to produce coke required for carbide manufacture, They were adapted to kilns so that the hot volatile gases could be used for lime burning, Their operation has been described in various patent disclosures (1, 2, 3), and their application to rotary lime burning kilns has been described by Andersen (4). Details of the process and plants have also been published by Kurt Baum (5,6).

To provide a relatively structurally stable form of dried lump lignite, two North Dakota lignites from Mercer County were dried by the Fleissner process in an atmosphere of saturated steam at 200, 300, and 370 p.s.i.a. pressure, corresponding to steam temperatures of 382°, 417°, and 437° F., respectively. Two series of experiments were made at each test pressure with the individual lignites. In one series, the autoclave was preheated to the processing temperature before charging the lignite; in the other the lignite was charged into the autoclave at room temperature. In each case, heat losses were determined by blank tests of steam consumption over a similar operating cycle with the empty autoclave. The degree of moisture removal and net steam consumption were calculated from material balances. The amount of water removed as a liquid from the two North Dakota lignites during the heating and steaming periods was compared with results calculated from previously published data on drying Austrian lignite and Australian brown coal. These lignites, covering a wide geographical area, had original moisture contents ranging from 35 to 49 percent. The Austrian lignite and Australian brown coal are considered to be of Miocene Age, and the Dakota lignites belong to the Paleocene.

"This study presents an experimental program performed to investigate the effects of flotation variables including gas flow rate, froth depth, slurry solids percent, frother/collector dosage and pH on the froth bubble size during desulfurization of an iron ore. These conditions were varied using a central composite design (CCD). Image analysis techniques have been developed and used successfully to characterize the froth bubble size. Results of the CCD experiments showed that the flotation variables have different effects on the froth bubble size. The froth height, air flowrate, pH and solid content had the most important influence on the froth bubble size. The interaction between the collector-frother, pH-collector, frother-air flowrate, solid content-froth height, pH-froth height and solid content-pH were also significant. Process state can be accurately deduced from the froth surface appearance, providing a convenient way to quantify the parameters as a function of the process control. INTRODUCTION Flotation processes are subjected to a wide variety of process disturbances, some of which are made by the change in mineral features and others to variation in operating procedures. Feed and air flow rates, densities, size distributions and shapes of particles, surface properties, and reagent dosages and compositions can all change, often with significant effect on the performance of the plant (Moolman et al., 1996a). Flotation process efficiency is governed by the wettability of the solid as well as the surface tension at the liquid-gas. Both of these properties are influenced by operational conditions encountering in a flotation process.
