The technique of sensitivity analysis is discussed and is used to illustrate the effect of the variability in a mining operation on the optimal production and product market plan.

In this research, super gravity field was introduced in the solidification process of high carbon steel. The experimental results show that the solidification structure of Fe–1 wt% C steel can be largely refined by applying super gravity at the cooling rate of 10 °C/min. Both the primary and secondary dendrite length was markedly reduced. In addition, the eutectic structure in the inter-dendrite was also refined with the obvious reduce of eutectic space. However, the macro-segregation of C along the direction of super gravity was caused with higher weight percent at the upper area than that at the bottom of the sample. The mechanism of solidification structure refinement and the C macro-segregation of Fe–1 wt% C steel in super gravity field were also discussed in this paper.

1.1 INTRODUCTION When underground mining involves total extraction, it induces overburden strata movements. If not properly planned it causes surface subsidence and affects surface environmental conditions. Total extraction usually refers to longwall mining and room and pillar mining with pillar extraction. Surface subsidence has long been a subject of intensive research for scientists all over the world and considerable achievements have been obtained. However due to its difficulties and complicated nature, research into overburden movement has been thus far incomplete as compared to that into surface subsidence. Since surface subsidence is a manifestation of the results of overburden movement, the processes and mechanisms of overburden movement must be fully understood in order to establish the mathematical prediction models of surface subsidence. In this chapter the processes of overburden movement and its zones of movement in the overburden will be discussed. 1.2 PROCESSES OF OVERBURDEN MOVEMENT When total extraction is used, it produces a large void in the coal seam and disturbs the equilibrium conditions of the surrounding rock strata. The roof strata bend downward while the floor heaves. When the excavated area (or gob) expands to a sufficient size, the roof strata will cave. As a result, the overlying strata continue to bend and break until the piles of the fallen rock fragments are sufficiently high to support the overhanging strata. At this tie the overhanging strata no longer cave, but bend and rest on the underlying strata. Strata bending and subsidence develop upward until reaching the surface and forming a subsidence basin. The whole overburden strata and the surface subsidence basin will further go through a period of compaction and gradually become stabilized. Current knowledge regarding the process of overburden movement has been derived from several sources. One is the direct observation of the mined sections and their surfaces, another from field monitoring of strata movements in the overburden, and others from computer modeling and scale modeling in the laboratory. For example, Figs. 1.1 and 1.2 show the results of a borehole monitoring experiment (Borehole B-2) using the full profile borehole inclinometer and full profile borehole extensometer for lateral displacements and vertical subsidence, respectively (Conroy and Gyarmaty, 1983). The panel, 400 ft wide by 5000 ft long and 630 ft deep, was extracted from the Pittsburgh No. 8 seam which had an average thickness of 54 in. The face advanced from east to west. Curve A in Fig. 1.1 shows the inclination of the borehole when it was 45 ft ahead of the face at Position A (i.e., on the solid coal side). The total deviation of the borehole was 1/7000. The first shear movement occurred at 130 ft above the coal seam and appeared to have occurred along the bedding plane with large contrast of rock strata on both sides, i.e., sandstone vs. shale. When the face had passed the borehole 79 ft at Position B, the borehole deformed to assume a bow shape with a maximum deviation of 2.8 in. from the center line. Numerous shearing planes occurred and extended further upward. When the face had passed the borehole by 75 ft at position C, strata subsidence was measured. Fig. 1.2 shows that a strata separation as large as 4 ft occurred at 40 to 100 ft above the coal seam. Above this level, the strata subsided more uniformly with bedding separations within 1 to 2 in. Another example is the longwall mining with complete caving in the Soviet Union's Karaganda Coalfield (Kolebaeva, 1968). The coal seam was 6 ft thick and 154 ft deep. The immediate roof was the fine-grained sandstone interbedded with coarse-grained sandstone. Above this, there was sandy shale and shale. In order to monitor the process of overburden movement, 15 stations were established in a borehole (Fig. 1.3). The elevations of those stations were measured when the face was at various distances from the borehole. Fig. 1.3 shows the movement history of each station. For convenience of comparison, the movement history of each station was plotted on a common reference point as shown in Fig. 1.4. Clearly, the movements of strata from Station # 1 to #6 were nearly simultaneous, i.e., they behaved as a single unit. The strata from Station #7 to # 15 had differential separations, the maximum of which was 40 in. As the face passed by and moved away, strata separations in general reduced gradually. But strata separation between Stations #12 and #13 remained the same until the end of the monitoring period. The total bed separation between Station #7 and # 15 reached 11 in., approximately 18% of seam thickness, when the face was 132 ft beyond. Based on the above observations, the author developed a conceptual model of overburden movement due to underground longwall mining (Fig. 1.5). The above-mentioned two case studies illustrated that subsidence in the overburden strata propagates upward and subsidence velocity decreases from the bottom to the top. When the subsidence velocity at the surface reaches the maximum value, the subsidence velocity at the bottom portion of the overburden strata has decreased considerably and the strata have begun to compact. Bed separation occurs within a certain distance above the coal seam and reduces from the bottom to the top. When the face has moved away, bed separation reduces gradually, so that eventually some beds completely close and others partially close. Bed separation reaches the highest level when the subsidence velocity at the surface is at its maximum value. For instance in Fig. 1.4 surface subsidence velocity was maximum when the face was 38 to 44 ft past the point. At this time the total bed separation was maximum. Overall the strata directly above the opening are subjected to tension in the vertical direction. But above a certain level, all strata move nearly simultaneously. There is also significant shear movement along some bedding planes. 1.3 ZONES OF MOVEMENT INTHEOVERBURDEN After the extraction of a longwall panel or room and pillar section of sufficient width the strata in the overburden are subjected to various degrees of movement from the bottom to the top. According to the movement characteristics, the damaged overburden can be divided into four zones (Fig. 1.6). Caved Zone. "When considered collectively, Mineral Resources and Mineral Reserves are arguably a key asset for any mining company. Mineral Reserves are the economically mineable portions of Mineral Resources. They therefore provide a good indication of the economic prospects in the short to medium term and associated non-financial impairments for mining companies, hence a focus on Mineral Reserves. An assessment of modifying factors for converting Mineral Resources to Mineral Reserves revealed that Mineral Reserves were most sensitive to long-term commodity prices, hence the focus on long-term commodity prices. The justification for selecting gold and platinum mines is that they collectively make a significant contribution to South Africa’s earnings from mining.The introduction of the South African Code for the Reporting of Exploration Results, Mineral Resources and Mineral Reserves (SAMREC Code) in 2000 informed the basis for analysing long-term commodity price assumptions for major South African gold and platinum mining companies between 2000 and 2016. The analysis revealed that the least number of non-financial impairments occurred when long-term commodity prices were within ±5% of spot prices. This finding suggests that this range is the ideal range for long-term commodity price assumptions to improve confidence in Mineral Reserve declarations and minimize impairments. Introduction The South African Code for the Reporting of Exploration Results, Mineral Resources and Mineral Reserves (SAMREC Code) defines a Mineral Resource as ‘a concentration or occurrence of solid material of economic interest in or on the Earth’s crust in such form, grade or quality and quantity that there are reasonable prospects for eventual economic extraction’ (SAMREC, 2016, p. 18). Mineral Resources are categorized according to increasing levels of geoscientific confidence or knowledge, from Inferred to Indicated and lastly, Measured categories. The SAMREC Code defines a Mineral Reserve as ‘the economically mineable part of a Measured and/or Indicated Mineral Resource’ (SAMREC, 2016, p. 25). In some of the other reporting codes such as the Australasian Code for Reporting of Exploration Results, Mineral Resources and Ore Reserves (the JORC Code), a Mineral Reserve is synonymous with an Ore Reserve. The conversion of Mineral Resources to Mineral Reserves involves applying modifying factors, which are non-resource considerations. The modifying factors used in the Mineral Reserve estimation process include mining, metallurgical, processing, infrastructure, economic, marketing, legal, environmental, social, and governmental factors. Each of these modifying factors consists of several components which require due consideration in the estimation of Mineral Reserves. Table I shows some of the components typically considered for each of the modifying factors."

At the No. 4 Mine of Jim Walter Resources in Tuscaloosa County in the North Central part of the State of Alabama, the Mary Lee and Blue Creek coal beds lay 2000 feet below the surface. The quantity of methane gas stored within the coal bed reservoir at this depth and released during development mining necessitates that each coal producing section be ventilated using large air quantities approaching 100,000 cfm. In order to meet coal contractural commitments in the early stages of mine development by installing the necessary number of continuous mining machine units and to develop the mine to projected air shaft sites, high pressure, large volume mine ventilating fans were required. This presentation discusses the installation start-up and changeover procedures when two size GAF 31.5-28-1 TLT-Babcock 3500 Horsepower fans with adjustable pitch in flight blades were put on line while phasing out two Jeffrey Mining Machine Company 8HUA 117 Fans. A graph will be presented to depict the most economic diameter shaft size under 2000 feet of cover with different air quantity requirements.

IN 1953, Lewis (1) published an article which brought forth a great amount of discussion by grinding engineers. In his contribution to discussion the present writer (2) suggested that, for the most efficient performance of a ball mill, there must be a .definite relationship between Cn, per cent critical speed, and V p, per cent mill volume occupied by the ball charge. Later, he ( 3) was able to publish some grinding data from Wright-Hargreaves milly which appeared to bear out this contention. It is with this view to establishing a fundamental relationship between Cn and Vp that the idea of this Forum was conceived. Accordingly, a questionnaire was prepared and copies of it were mailed to over eighty Canadian mill operators. This questionnaire did not include a question on dilution on the assumption that each mill operator was using the most efficient dilution for his operation, nor was a question on efficiency of classification included since it was thought that the inclusion of efficiency of dassification in the questionnaire at this preliminary stage might render the forum discussion,. while everybody was trying to find his bearings, too unwieldy. However, it is evident that, as discussions develop, this forum will have to define a uniform method for establishing most efficient classification in grinding circuits

The offshore production of oil and gas resources has been active in the Gulf of Mexico since Kerr- McGee drilled the first commercial well out of the sight of land in 1947. Since then, approximately 60% of the offshore oil/gas production structures used globally have been erected in the GOM to support the production of energy resources’. The shallow, shelf and shelf edge waters of the Gulf of Mexico have reached or are rapidly approaching production maturity, requiring that the fixed structures used to support energy production be removed or otherwise disposed of by suitable means. The use of energetic materials has been determined to be a safe, efficient and cost effective technology to remove fixed offshore structures whose service life has been exceeded.

Dado que los trabajos de procesamiento metalúrgico de la mina Uchucchahua, ocasionaron impactos en el medio ambiente, afectando la calidad del agua y eliminando la vida acuática en las lagunas Añilcocha, Colquicocha y Tinquicocha, se procedió a encontrar una alternativa de tratamiento biológico que recupere la calidad de vida en la mina Uchucchacua. En este sentido, el presente trabajo describe el tratamiento pasivo de los efluentes con manganeso de la mina Uchucchacua. Para dicho procedimiento, se desarrollaron trabajos en dos etapas: el de laboratorio y balde. El primero comprende los sistemas de tratamiento pasivo anaeróbico y aeróbico.El aeróbico se inició sobre la base de los procesos de filtración y aireación a fin de determinar el grado de oxidación y precipitación del manganeso como óxido, mientras que el segundo se realizó en función a los resultados obtenidos en la etapa laboratorio y comprende los siguientes procesos: filtración, autooxidación, aireación, sedimentación. En consecuencia, los procesos anaeróbicos no favorecen la reducción de Mn II en los efluentes estudiados, mientras que los procesos aeróbicos permitieron la disminución del manganeso.

There currently exists no viable means of obtaining continuous feedback on blast efficiency. This paper describes the adaptation of a loading shovel to serve as a diagnostic tool to evaluate the success of ground preparation. Work undertaken in a large western Canadian open pit involved microprocessor-based instrumentation for the performance monitoring of an electric mining shovel. The monitored shovel responses proved to be reliable indicators of variations in muckpile diggability. This approach is considered to provide a very comprehensive survey of post blast conditions since such a shovel interacts which every cubic yard of a blast.

The publication of the Lerchs Grossmann paper in 1965 outlining a threedimensional graph algorithm for ultimate pit definition set the standard for the mining industry regarding pit optimization. Although the algorithm provides a solution from a static standpoint (i.e., assumes instantaneous mining), it is widely used for commercial packages to generate ultimate pit limits and intermediate phases. However, the solutions delivered are presented in canned reports lacking connection to the original data, which prevents further data analysis and extended reporting. The approach presented in this paper attempts to overcome such barriers by performing openpit optimization through databases. An adaptation of the Lerchs Grossmann graph algorithm is used to generate nodes, arcs and tree structures in customized tables to determine the maximum closure of a graph.

Welding is playing an important role in the manufacture of construction equipment as used in the mining industry. It provides design possibilities which are unique to this method of manufacture, and normally makes possible lighter weight but stronger products, which can be a definite advantage to a user. Welding is an industry that has experienced major developments over the past decade, all of which have improved our capability to make better welds and make them more economically. International Harvester Company has been introducing these newer welding methods into its manufacturing plants, particularly those producing construction equipment, just as fast as their value has been proven. This paper discusses how modern welding methods are contributing to the manufacture of strip mining equipment.

An open pit mining equipment maintenance program, in order to be successful, must have many active segments covering the full range of equipment selection, trained personnel, repair facilities, preventive maintenance programs, warehousing, interdepartmental cooperation, paperwork and effective communications. The mine maintenance program is required to protect company assets Which are units of equipment generating revenue. The program should result in reduced unscheduled equipment downtime, increased equipment productivity rates, and decreased unit operating costs. Current maintenance problems; maintenance effectiveness and future projections on equipment maintenance are discussed. Equipment maintenance is big business and the maintenance department is a full-time partner in the mining venture.

In this study, 23 samples of leached ash (LA) were collected from an ash pond at Loy Yang Power Station and geotechnically characterised. The samples were collected at various depths and locations within the ash pond on two separate occasions in order to account for the full variability. The LA within the ash pond at Loy Yang Power Station (LYPS) was found to vary in texture from silt to sand, depending on the location from where the sample was collected. Samples collected near the ash pond inlet discharge point, for instance, contained more than 50 per cent sand sized particles and were subsequently classified under the Unified Soil Classification System (USCS) as silty sand (SM). Further downstream of the inlet discharge, the LA became progressively finer and was classified accordingly as elastic silt (MH) when the sand content became less than 50 per cent. Basic geotechnical testing revealed that the LA from Loy Yang Power Station was generally acceptable as a landfill cover material. The permeability of LA, however, was generally too high for prescriptive covers, (ie resistive covers that generally rely on the impervious nature of the material to control percolation). Alternative covers, generally rely on the store/release function of a capillary or monolithic barrier to prevent percolation into the landfill. Subsequently, a material that can maintain a high water storage capacity while at the same time, readily allow infiltration and evapotranspiration is required for an alternative cover. Sandy silt and silty sand are optimal soils for alternative covers, as they do not yield water to gravity forces, but do give up most of the water in their pores when subjected to high-matric suction (Kavazanjian, 2001). The effectiveness of alternative covers is ultimately assessed using computer models, such as UNSAT-H and HYDRUS-2D, to rigorously perform water balance calculations. Prior to using a computer model to determine the highest possible percolation in the worst climatic conditions, it is necessary to select the most appropriate materials. This paper suggests a method to screen available materials for use as an alternative cover material on the basis of the soil water characteristic curve (SWCC).

"With the development of new heat resistant magnesium alloys, the automotive industry has introduced several parts to the drive train. The rising number of large magnesium components will result in a higher quantity of automotive post consumer scrap and the changing legislation will force car manufacturers to take magnesium recycling into consideration. So far post consumer scrap has not been used for magnesium alloy production. Quite a reasonable amount of automotive scrap is likely to end up in a mixed light metal shredder fraction. The separation of mixed magnesium scrap according to several alloys is complex. Therefore secondary magnesium alloys made from blended post consumer scrap would be useful. For this work a matrix of potential recycling alloys was prepared by chill casting and high pressure die casting. The materials were investigated for their microstructure, mechanical properties, heat resistance and corrosion properties. The results will be presented in this paper.IntroductionWithin the last ten to fifteen years several heavy magnesium parts have been assembled in passenger cars, such as gear box housings and crank cases [1, 2]. Reasons are the lately developed new heat resistant alloys and the increasing responsibility of automotive manufacturers to reduce the vehicles weight and thereby CO2 emissions. The latter is pushed by international legislation [3, 4]. The rising quantity of magnesium in automobiles will result in an increasing amount of so called post consumer scrap at the end of the vehicles life.So far magnesium recycling was done only for clean scrap that is free from impurities, contaminations and sorted according to a chemical composition or a single alloy respectively [5- 15]. The latter is also called class 1 scrap and mainly consists of sprues and runners from magnesium die casters [15, 16]. For the upcoming automotive post consumer scrap the materials quality strongly depends on the way end of life vehicles are treated. By proper dismantling of old cars, the bigger magnesium components could be collected and possibly treated similar to class 1 scrap [15]. Up to date automotive manufacturers have no uniform recycling system for end of live vehicles. Most probably a considerable quantity of old cars will be shredded. The resulting light metal shredder fraction will contain aluminium and magnesium scrap, both from several alloys. A separation of mixed magnesium and aluminium scrap is feasible according to [17]. Other authors claimed that the grade of separation of magnesium from aluminium is still not sufficient for a proper industrial recycling process of magnesium post consumer scrap [15, 16]. If an automatic sorting is possible it will probably be very expensive [18]. Therefore, so far the main use of post consumer scrap has been the steel desulphurisation and aluminium production [15]. The use of post consumer scrap for magnesium alloy production has been considered already by [15] and [16] but some problems have to be approached."

In May 2018 Kasbah Resources Limited (“Kasbah”) completed an ore sorting test work program which was a precursor to releasing in July 2018 an updated Definitive Feasibility Study (“DFS”) for the Achmmach Tin Project in Morocco, which it is proposing to develop along with its joint venture partners. The testwork program evaluated ore sorting as a pre-concentration option to achieve early elimination of gangue and the low-grade component of ROM feed, thereby potentially:  Significantly upgrading the head grade of tin to the downstream processing plant.  Significantly reducing the required throughput capacity (and projected capital expenditure) of the downstream processing plant.  Reducing total consumables, power and water requirements in downstream processing.  Increasing the recovery of tin in the gravity and flotation circuit due to the higher feed grade achievable with ore sorting.  Reducing tailings tonnage, tailings cost and environmental footprint.  Using sorter rejects for mine backfill or road base applications. Key aspects of the design of the metallurgical testwork program centred around the need to ensure that samples representative of ROM ore feed (including projected mining dilution) were selected for the ore sorting testwork. The design and implementation of the ore sorting bulk testwork program is described, as well as a summary of the test work results and a discussion of the enhancement of the project economics reported by Kasbah, which led the company to adopt ore sorting as part of the proposed processing circuit in the updated 2018 DFS.
