A site-specific blasting model has been developed for the Asarco Mission mine. The main inputs to the model are the in-situ block size (F80), the post-blast fragmentation (P80) and the intact tensile strength (To). The output from the model is the specific blast energy (ESE). Modern techniques are being used to obtain the input parameters for the site-specific blast fragmentation model. In particular, image processing software is used to obtain both the in-situ block size and the post-blast fragmentation, and the Schmidt hammer is used to obtain the tensile strength at numerous locations throughout the rock mass. An initial model was developed using five test shots in one area of the mine that contains Argillite and is relatively homogeneous. This also included calibrating Schmidt hammer readings against actual Brazilian tensile measurements. The model for Argillite will be updated as more tests are conducted, and the model will be extended to the other four primary rock types at the Asarco Mission mine.

As part of its program of petroleum production research the Federal Bureau of Mines has long been engaged in the study and development of systems of analysis of oilfield waters (8, 12, 20, 21, 22, 27, 30).21 However, many of the early chemical procedures developed by the Bureau and widely adopted by the petroleum industry are time consuming, and some are unreliable for determining certain constituents found in California oilfield waters. Because of the need for more rapid and more accurate methods having greater sensitivity with low concentrations of some constituents, a study has been made by the Bureau's Petroleum Research Laboratory at San Francisco, in developing new techniques and modifying previously published techniques for analyzing oilfield waters by flame spectrophotometric, potentiometric, and colorimetric methods. Test solutions were synthesized for testing the suitability and accuracy of the procedures, and the effect of interfering ions. These solutions contained known quantities of characteristic constituents of oilfield waters including sodium, magnesium, potassium, calcium, lithium, strontium, barium, sulfate, chloride, bromide, iodide, carbonate, bicarbonate and borates in a wide range of concentrations. The compositions of these synthetic brines are listed in table 22. Many California oilfield waters contain salts of petroleum-derived organic acids and several synthetic oilfield waters also were prepared to which large quantities of naphthenates or salts of petroleum acids were added.

The challenge to be met is that of the production of a conveyor belt which can withstand use and misuse in an environment that may differ vastly from one country to another, and even between one mine and its neighbour.The development of a product to meet such varying requirements necessitates a protracted program of trials, both in the laboratory and in the field; a new successful development, the only criterion, can be said to have been achieved only after very long-term usage under actual, deliberately chosen, arduous mining conditions.New developments in conveyor belt construction can never stop, no more than can developments in new and advanced mining techniques. A new problem is set-an answer must be found. Some of the problems are noted here, and answered where possible, in what must after all be little more than an excursion into a very comprehensive and detailed subject."

I. CONCEPT MARTA's Peachtree Center Station is being mined out of hard rock, directly beneath Atlanta's central business district, with minimal surface disruption during construction. Its cost is competitive with that of a conventional cut-and-cover alternative owing to its design concept, which utilizes the rock as a primary structural and architectural material. II. PLANNING The station was originally planned for cut-and-cover construction. However, Peachtree Street is unusually narrow for a main business street (generally 78 feet (24 m) between building lines) and cut-and-cover construction would therefore be very disruptive to surface traffic and severely restrict access to adjacent buildings, including Peachtree Center, Atlanta's showcase business/commercial complex. More than ever before, mining projects are besieged from growing regulatory, political, public, and special interest group pressure. Administrative and legal appeals to permits and environmental documents can delay project start-up and add tremendous cost to mineral development. Some mining projects have been canceled given undue external constraints. Successful managers must learn to cope with these constraints. This paper will discuss controversy and present a number of environmental management tips to minimize the potentials for delay and to lessen the impacts from government and anti-mining pressures.

In ingots of silicon-killed carbon steel-made without addition of aluminum, transparent spherical or nearly spherical inclusions, up to about 0.15-mm diameter, are generally present. They may be glassy or crystallized, wholly or partially In steels of high carbon contents they consist of silica,4,12 in steels of lower carbon contents and, in consequence, higher oxygen contents, of iron-manganese-silicate with higher iron and manganese contents the lower the carbon content. Small silicate inclusions, about 0.01 mm or smaller, may occur, just as sulphide inclusions do, in portions that have been the last or nearly the last to freeze,l0,12,17 this location being verified by primary etching.10 Hence, it may be concluded that they have separated from liquid steel that has become enriched in oxygen through segregation during freezing. Silicate inclusions with a diameter larger than about 0.02 mm appear, at least in ingots of moderate size, to be distributed at random in relation to the primary structure and therefore may be assumed to have existed as droplets in the liquid steel before freezing started at the point in question. The average size of such large inclusions has been found to increase toward the axis1' and their amount to increase from the top downward in the axial region.2,10 It has been assumed that this accumulation is a result of the droplets being brought down by the slowly settling metal crystals.2 It has been suggested that large silicate inclusions generally form,6 or may form,'' by coagulation of smaller ones, or by small drops being caught by larger ones during the rising of the latter.9 The occasional occurrence of a large inclusion surrounded by a swarm of small ones has been taken as a proof of this mechanism but, as suggested later, may be explained in another way. It has been pointed out that an inclusion droplet in the liquid steel may grow at the expense of an adjacent one, which implies diffusion of soluble inclusion-forming elements in the liquid steel.'= Further, it has been pointed out that, on cooling in ladle or mold, the metal-silicate equilibrium is displaced in the direction of separation of silicate. Thus inclusions may grow in size and amount.2,3,8,12,13,17,19,20 The exposure of the liquid steel to the oxygen of the air during tapping and pouring, and the consequent reaction, has been mentioned as a source of the formation of inclusions19.20 but this possibility has not received particular attention. Further, the admixture of furnace slag during tapping1 or of refractory material from various sourcesl,20 has been considered. The inclusions due to the latter may be recognized, however, through their resistamce to hydrofluoric acid, imparted by the alumina content. The rock breakage process in drilling is a main source of noise in roof bolting operations, especially when hard rocks are encountered. Proper control of drilling operation can provide an opportunity to improve energy efficiency of drilling and to reduce noise and heat generated from bit-rock friction. Drilling tests have been conducted in laboratory settings to confirm this noise-reduction strategy. Preliminary results show that the drilling parameters, penetration and rotational rates can be controlled to achieve in a desirable range in drilling medium hard rock. Based on the theoretical and experimental studies, rational drilling control strategy is developed for noise control while maintaining a safe and productive roof bolting operation. Applying this strategy in underground roof bolting operation, the noise exposure of roof bolter operators will be significantly reduced.

Durante sua reforma, foram empregadas as técnicas de reforma em grandes blocos, as quais foram trocados todo o cadinho, corpo e topo do Alto Forno, trazendo recursos tecnológicos possibilitando obter melhores resultados durante a segunda campanha. Após a reforma, o Alto Forno 1 continua apresentando bons resultados em termos de produtividade, consumo de combustíveis e índices de trabalho, colocando-o entre um dos Altos Fornos com melhores resultados do grupo ArcelorMittal.

The development and optimisation of mill discharge trommels, and specifically their screen panels, can be a neglected area in the complex operation of a minerals processing plant. Trommels are often seen as a ‘set and forget’ component of the circuit, even when significant improvements in design are possible. A redesigned trommel and panel arrangement has simplified and added flexibility to the plant shutdown schedule at Kirkland Lake Gold’s Fosterville Gold Mine in Central Victoria.Prior to the trommel redesign, the shutdown frequency was determined by the expected life of trommel panels at 14 weeks. Planning downtime around this item led to higher maintenance costs and wastage in other areas of the plant. This was particularly disruptive with respect to mill lining change-outs, which were forced out of sequence and often changed prematurely. Fosterville Gold engaged Metso Australia Limited to propose a new trommel design that would better suit the site. The new trommel was engineered to balance simplicity with performance, and incorporated the latest in Modular trommel design, modelling and Finite Elemental Analysis (FEA). Modular Panels and Spiral Segments achieve significantly longer life, and allow in-situ panel change outs, flexibility in spiral and dam positioning and an improvement in classification performance. Trommel panel life has significantly increased from 14 to 71 weeks in the trommel’s highest wearing zone. The new design has eliminated some risks to safety by reducing manual labour and lifting requirements during shutdowns. There is greater flexibility with respect to shutdown requirements. The site is no longer at the mercy of trommel panel lifespan, which allows for better optimisation of wear components in the circuit. CITATION:Pyke, J D, Katov, K and Ciutina, S T, 2018. UK Seabed Resources (UKSR) signed a manganese nodule exploration contract with the International Seabed Authority on 8 February 2013 for a 58,000 km2 tract on the eastern edge of the Clarion Clipperton Zone (CCZ). UKSR is a private company based in the United Kingdom and established primarily to develop the commercial potential of the CCZ deposits. This is the first of many anticipated regulatory, market and technical milestones that are requisite for (1) environmentally responsible commercial scale production of nodule derived metals and (2) generation of revenue through their sale in the global commodities market. This presentation will describe the progress made to date in this effort and an industry-based perspective on the tasks and challenges that may lie ahead.

The paper designs an extraction flow for the total recovery of nickel and cobalt and removing magnesium simultaneously from the cadthodic materials of the spent hydrogen-nickel and cadmium-nickel batteries. The separation of Co, Ni and Mg though P507 extraction .The extraction equilibrium pH is 4.5~5.0, ßNi/Co is 140~180, and ß Ni/Mg is 20~25; nickel and magnesium are scrubbed in two steps, in which the equilibrium pH of nickel and magnesium scrubbing is controlled at 5.0±0.1 and 4.4±0.1 respectively. The stepwise scrubbing technique is adopted to remove 94.5% of magnesium and to recover 99.45% of nickel and 95.35% of cobalt. During the integrated extraction and precipitation process the total recovery fraction of nickel and cobalt are 99.99% and 99.95%, and the recovery fraction of magnesium is 94.02%.The recovered NiSO4 and CoSO4 solution are enriched and crystallized.

Configuration of Rozelle Interchange Project’s ventilation system required design and construction of some of the largest and tallest underground civil caverns attempted in Australia. The paper focuses on the technical challenges of designing these caverns within a heterogeneous, generally weak sandstone under highstress conditions while providing a construction sequence that would align with the contractor’s preferred techniques and schedule. Various construction techniques were investigated, but ultimately an observational approach relying on a construction sequence and specialized instrumentation met both the designer’s and contractor’s requirements. Relevant data obtained from excavations and the construction monitoring program are presented within.

The Furnish mine, Caharrus County, W. C., was operated intermittently until 1905 as a gold mine. Scheelite was discovered by A. L. Mash in the mine dumps of the Furniss and Phoenix mines, and he later informed the Bureau of Mines of his discovery. The Bureau of Mines, in two projects at the deposit in 1948 and in drilled 12 holes totaling 1,706.6 feet, examined and sampled the underground workings, excavated by bulldozer and hand, 3,155 linear feet of trenches and collected numerous samples for assay. The best scheelite shown; was found in the underground exposure of the Furniss mine.

As fibras de bambu são ricas em celulose, hemicelulose e lignina. Devido ás suas ótimas propriedades mecânicas conforme solicitação percebeu a abundância de celulose e sua respectiva orientação nas regiões dos entrenós, indicando elevado teor de celulose. Nosso trabalho tem o objetivo de extrair nanocelulose dessa região do bambu, desenvolvendo uma metodologia eficiente na sua produção. As nanopartículas foram obtidas por hidrólise ácida a 64% após lavagem com NaOH e branqueamento com H2O2 e NaOH. As caracterizações das amostras foram feitas com TG, DTG, IFTR e tamanho de partícula por Potencial Zeta. Foram observados dois eventos na análise DTG: um em 54°C correspondente a perca de água e em 330 °C correspondente a degradação da celulose. Os tamanhos das partículas em Potencial Zeta obtiveram picos em 257,1 nm (79,6%) e 67,9 nm (15,6%).

Neste trabalho, amostras de NiTi com a composição de 50,9% at. Ni passaram por um tratamento superficial a laser Nd:YAG. O objetivo desde trabalho foi de modificar a superfície das amostras para comparar o parâmetro de rugosidade média (Ra) entre as amostras que sofreram interação do pulso do laser e a amostra que não passou pelo tratamento superficial a laser, já que para algumas aplicações biomédicas a superfície do material precisa ser rugosa. Para tanto, o laser foi utilizado em condições de velocidades de avanço diferentes. A amostra tratada com a menor velocidade de avanço laser, de 12,5 cm.s-1, apresentou uma maior rugosidade (Ra de 210 nm) devido ao maior tempo de contato do feixe com a superfície da amostra e, além disso, observou-se a formação de óxidos na superfície da amostra.

El objetivo del presente trabajo es describir el sistema de relleno hidraúlico en los tajeos de vetas angostas de la mina de Morococha a través del método "Arch Back". Actualmente el sistema de relleno convencional es lento, costoso y ofrece desventajas respecto del *R/H. Los objetivos del R/H son aumentar la eficacia de minado, controlar las leyes del mineral, minar los tajeos de baja ley, mejorar el sostenimiento de las cajas y la baja de costo. En este sentido, se describen las operaciones unitarias de los tajeos con R/H y se comparan con los métodos convencionales, encontrando eficiencias en los tajeos aplicados con el método Arch Back y los tajeos de vetas angostas, así como se mejora la producción y los costos de la misma.

To mitigate and control the combined sewer overflows from 17 outfalls in the City of Detroit, three outfalls in Dearborn Heights and eight outfalls in Redford Township, the Detroit Water and Sewerage Department has completed the preliminary design of a storage tunnel in 2005. In 2006, a final design has revised the alignments and the inside diameter (ID) of the tunnel. The revised tunnel system includes an 11.28-km(7-miles) 9.14-m (30-ft) ID tunnel, a 24.4-m (80-ft) ID pump station, two work shafts about 15.2-m (50-ft) ID each, and 14 drop shafts with various IDs. This paper discusses the latest development of this tunnel system.

"THE TITLE I have chosen is certainly not one of those self-explanatory ones. I shall endeavour to make its significance clear during my remarks but, in the hope of minimizing that inevitable exodus which follows a good lunch such as this, I am going to withhold the final key to its meaning until the very last sentence of this talk.Some explanation is due at the beginning, however, so for those of you unfamiliar with Spanish I will explain that casa means house, or home. The casa about which I am going to talk necessitates a wide .and generous interpretation of the word, because I am using it to indicate principally that portion of the North American continent which is the home, in the western hemisphere, of British and American ideals of justice and freedom, the dignity of the individual and his right to exercise private initiative .and engage in private enterprise. In a wider sense, I am including the entire western hemisphere, which may yet stand as the last bulwark of political and industrial democracy.As for the treasures of which I am about to speak, may I remind you that there are no• material treasures but those derived from the earth, and they are derived by one of two processes, -mining and farming. These two fundamental industries are the basis, and the sole material basis, of our welfare, our wealth, our very existence. From farming, whether it be farming of the land. or farming of the sea, we obtain the food to keep us alive, healthy and able to work."
