The steady-state and dynamic behaviour of semi-autogenous grinding (SAG) mills are arguably best described using a population model that caters for the breakage kinetics and the material trans-port of rock and pulp inside the mill. Breakage kinetics are usually expressed in terms of a specific breakage rate function and a separate primary breakage distribution function. Material transport usually invokes the concept of a specific discharge rate function. Unfortunately, the breakage rate and breakage distribution functions for SAG mills are very difficult to estimate uniquely from plant data alone. Simplifying assumptions must be made to over-come this problem, which leads to many unresolved dilemmas with regard to whether or not the de-rived functions are accurate, precise, and reflect reality. For example, it is sometimes assumed that the breakage distribution function for a SAG mill treating run-of-mine ore can be derived from laboratory dropweight and tumbling tests on small rocks in narrow size ranges. Such tests hardly reflect the environmental conditions likely to be encountered in a pilot or production SAG mill where there is a wide spectrum of particle sizes. It is shown that the dilemmas associated with standard population balance models (models that utilise separate breakage rate and breakage distribution functions) can be overcome by expressing breakage behaviour inside a SAG mill in terms of a single function. This function is an energy-based cumulative breakage rate function defined as the fractional rate at which particles and rocks coarser than a given size break to below that size per unit specific energy input. A model for SAG milling is formulated, which invokes the concept of a cumulative breakage rate function. Comparisons are made between the mathematical structure of this ?simple model? and standard population balance models. Perhaps the most attractive feature of the ?simple model? is that the cumulative breakage rate function can be uniquely estimated from measurements of size distributions and mass flows of the feed and discharge streams together with the size distribution and holdup mass of the mill charge. Such measurement can easily be made at pilot scale. It is concluded that this simplified approach to SAG milling may turn out to be the quickest way to fully describe and quantify the performance of these very complex mills.

Crushers are designed and manufactured to survive the severe duty of mining environments worldwide. Under these conditions the crusher performance and availability is one of the critical factors in the mine?s production and profitability. Traditionally the development of these machines tends to be experience-based, incremental improvements in design due to challenges of different applications, duty, or manufacturing. In order to better serve the mining industry a new approach was taken to the design of primary crushers. This approach was to focus on safety and maintenance activities. The result of this effort is a new generation of gyratory crushers that can be serviced from above. Using the features of this new generation of crushers to their fullest extent crushing installations have improved safety, reduced design and construction costs, and lowered maintenance requirements. This presentation explores the benefits of two crusher installations utilizing top service crushers.

The rate of hydration influences many important physical properties of gypsum. Previous research examined the rate of gypsum hydration and related this to compressive strength and microstructure development using BET specific surface area analysis. The analysis of gypsum porosity in combination with BET surface area and rate of hydration remains to be done. In the present study, mesoporosity is analyzed using the numerical method of Barrett, Joyner and Halenda (BJH) to gain a greater understanding of gypsum hydration and microstructure development. The rate of hydration has a significant effect on mesoporosity of the gypsum matrix. The results reveal the effect of mesoporosity and hydration rate on some macro physical properties of gypsum.

Blast movement measurement is a key component of grade control, enabling mines to carry all of the precision involved in locating ore blocks, through a chaotic blast, to production. A monitoring system was developed about ten years ago so that mine operation personnel can measure three dimensional movement in every production blast. Research has shown that blast movement is always highly variable with a significant non-deterministic component. The consequence is that modelling will be inaccurate and therefore optimal ore recovery can only be achieved by direct measurement of blast movement.Three dimensional movement vectors are measured at discrete locations in the blast. If blast movement is only measured at one location in a blast pattern, data is severely limited and has all of the inherent inaccuracies of modelling a variable population. It is intuitive that the accuracy of defining the post-blast ore block mark-ups are proportional to the number of movement measurement locations, however increasing the number of monitoring locations causes increases to the direct operating costs of the mine.A cost-benefit analysis is used to explore the optimal number of monitoring locations. Using the method described in this paper, an automated selection of the number and location of blast movement monitors are analysed against the value of recovered ore compared to the control, for each trial.CITATION:Loeb, J and Thornton, D, 2014. Computer programs commonly used to simulate mining operations generally require a fair amount of data. The common data input methods have been by either creating an ASCII data file or answering numerous questions during the data input phase. Both methods of data entry are tedious, time consuming, and inflexible. A screen handling system has been developed to drive FORTRAN-77 application software for the MS-DOS environment. The system utilizes keyboard functions with an aid of extended ANSI codes. It also allows a multi-view input data entries.

Establishing a robust geotechnical instrumentation and construction monitoring plan is one of the keys to the successful delivery of the world’s largest soft-ground bored tunnel in Seattle, Washington. The paper describes and provides a return of experience on current and best practice for monitoring tunnelling projects in urban areas. The owner’s contractual approach is discussed to highlight the flexibility of the design-built contract in achieving equal or better solutions by allowing for the use of innovative technics. Special attention is given to the management and involvement of third parties (building owners, utility owners), including the public, to overcome all challenges faced during the installation of the monitoring system in downtown Seattle for over 1000 instruments. "The use of reverse circulation (RC) drilling for grade control sample collection was selected by the Pueblo Viejo Mine Geology department at the recommencement of the operation in 2010. This method was selected because it allows: for multi-bench drilling (60 m hole depth, four benches of mining) to aid mine planning and provide a detailed close spaced drill data comparison with the reserve model angled drill holes to optimise the drill hole interception of the vertically controlled mineralisation dry sample collection in areas of excessive surface and groundwater mining operations to commence with the long assay return period (due to the need for the samples to be shipped overseas for analysis) until the on-site laboratory is operational.To date, 118 302 m of drilling has been completed throughout the operations of two open pits: Monte Negro and Moore. Two drill rigs (contractor and site-owned and operated) with three generations of sampling systems have been used to date. Throughout the drilling a 20 per cent quality assurance, quality control (QAQC) sample check (blanks, field duplicates and standards) have been used to check the drilling and laboratories performance. In addition, a total of 1104 fines samples were collected to compare the drill chip samples collected and the fines lost with two of the sample systems used.The drilling to date has highlighted the need for a complete and coordinated system to be used before sufficient confidence in the quality of the samples collected is achieved.The complete system must be set-up and coordinated to obtain the best quality sample possible. This complete package includes: drill bit size and shape for the rock being drilled and mineralisation targeted face sampling hammers with the correctly sized hammer shrouds sample hose routing to reduce sample flow turbulence and choking blow-down valves to eliminate drill hole water that has entered the drill string during rod changes correct drilling techniques targeting sample quality a sample system that captures the fines for inclusion into the sample.These improvements can be obtained without reducing the drilling rates.The measurements required to demonstrate the improvement in the sample quality will be the focus of future work within the department.CITATION:Goers, M and Almond, M, 2012. A major design feature to consider from the initial pioneering works until reaching full mine production of icy regolith at the South Pole of Moon will be the ramp. This will allow the access of equipment and personnel in and out of the excavation area. Although most of the requirements considered when designing a ramp on the Earth are similar, the fact of working in low gravity, with zero atmosphere, the potential exposure to high radiation, extreme temperature levels and drastic changes of illumination, from intense light to total darkness, are new factors to be included. Transversal sections are obtained according to the progression sequence of the production levels, with changes in length, gradient, friction factor of the terrain and curvature when required by the location characteristics and the specification of the equipment utilized. A MATLAB script was developed to calculate all the variables, in order to obtain 3D generated surfaces from the range of possible profiles.

A crescente preocupação em relação às áreas de proteção ambiental e ao alto consumo de argila, matéria-prima da cerâmica vermelha, ocasiona a indisponibilização progressiva de reservas de argilas no Brasil. Com isso, vê-se a necessidade de incorporar resíduos na massa argilosa para confecção de produtos de cerâmica vermelha. A indústria de cerâmica vermelha brasileira consome cerca de 10 milhões de toneladas de argila ao mês para produção de telhas e blocos. Na própria olaria são gerados resíduos, tal como, o resíduo de massa cerâmica crua originado na etapa de conformação das peças. Este trabalho visa incorporar o resíduo de massa cerâmica crua na massa argilosa usada em cerâmica vermelha. O resíduo foi caracterizado por meio de ensaios de FRX, DRX, limites de Atterberg e distribuição de tamanho de partículas. Corpos de prova feitos com massa argilosa e resíduo em teores variando de 10% a 90% (massa) foram conformados, secos à 110ºC, queimados à 900ºC em forno industrial e submetidos a ensaios de absorção de água, porosidade aparente, massa específica aparente e resistência à compressão. Os resultados evidenciaram que as propriedades cerâmicas avaliadas nos corpos de prova da massa argilosa incorporada com o resíduo atendem aos valores das argilas-padrão brasileiras para cerâmica vermelha.

Aços multiconstituídos têm aplicações voltadas principalmente para o setor automobilístico. Isso porque esses apresentam uma boa combinação de elevada resistência, ductilidade e tenacidade. A elevada resistência desses aços é devida a martensita e aos finos feixes de ferrita bainítica, enquanto que a tenacidade e a ductilidade são atribuídas aos filmes finos de austenita retida presentes entre os feixes. Esses filmes contém uma maior concentração de carbono em relação aos blocos de austenita retida. Uma consequência é que estes se tornam mais estáveis mecanicamente e termicamente. Dessa forma, foi realizada a avaliação do desempenho mecânico de um aço tratado isotermicamente abaixo de Mi e revenidos a 400°C/1 h. Os resultados dos ensaios de impacto mostraram que quanto maior a fração volumétrica da austenita retida maior é a energia absorvida, independente da morfologia desse constituinte.

Wall control blasting practices are necessary to reduce the impact of blasting on mine faces but can also have a significant negative impact on mine productivity and operating costs. The conventional practice in deep open pit mines is to use so-called trim blasts adjacent to pit walls. To provide burden relief these trim blasts have fewer rows than full production blasts and are fired to a cleared free-face; hence they are termed æunchokedÆ. This practice leads to scheduling constraints on the pit operations and can cause ore dilution due to excessive muckpile movement. The use of such trim blasts stems from the perception that increased wall damage results from æchokedÆ blasts. These concerns are based on the unproven assumptions that blast vibration levels and explosive gas penetration increase with increased blast burden and face confinement. This paper describes work undertaken as part of a major investigation into wall control blasting at the KCGM Fimiston Mine, Kalgoorlie, Western Australia. It details a study to assess damage effects due to blast burden. Borehole air pressure measurements and borehole video camera inspections were done behind a series of single blastholes drilled with varying burden distances, as well as behind a dedicated trim blast and a full production blast. It was found that the measured damage effects, including visible rock cracking, dilation, and the limited extent of gas penetration behind the blastholes, did not vary significantly with burden or blast type for the cases tested. This result was in complete agreement with detailed vibration measurements conducted by Blair and Armstrong (2001) during the study, which found that vibration was independent of blast burden. As a result of these investigations, changes to the blasting practices at the mine were implemented. Dedicated trim blasts and free-face blasting have been replaced by modified production blasts and the practice of æchokingÆ blasts has been introduced. This has resulted in a significant improvement in productivity and cost savings without compromising pit wall integrity.

In recent years, a great deal of effort has been put into automating mining equipment with the goal of improving worker health and safety and increasing mine productivity. Significant progress has been made in automating mining equipment such as load-haul-dumps and drills in underground environments where global positioning systems are unavailable. This paper addresses automating the task of positioning the shuttle-car (SC) under the continuous-miner (CM) coaldischarge conveyor during cutting and loading operations. A stereo depth camera is mounted on the SC. Machine learning based algorithms are applied on the camera’s output to identify the CM discharge conveyor and segment the scene into various regions such as roof, ribs, and personnel. This information is used to plan the shuttle car path to the CM discharge conveyor. The approach currently uses a 1/6th scale continuous miner and shuttle car in an appropriately scaled mock mine

A hydrogeologic characterization and impact analysis was performed for a proposed quarry at the Hitch Rack Ranch located in the Little Turkey Creek watershed southwest of Colorado Springs, Colorado. Continuous multiple channel tubing, nested piezometers, stream flow measurements, and mapping of known seeps were used to define the three-dimensional potentiometric distribution and areas of groundwater recharge and discharge. Water balance considerations, mass balance calculations, and potentiometric response to earth tides and barometric fluctuations confirmed that the granite fracture system in the ridge area of the proposed quarry has an extremely low bulk hydraulic conductivity resulting in minimal groundwater discharge to sustain the baseflow of Little Turkey Creek. The Little Turkey Creek valley forms the major conduit for groundwater flow exiting from the upper part of watershed underlain by granite. This conclusion has significant implications with respect to mine planning to minimize projected impacts to the hydrologic system and preserve this recharge component to downgradient Denver Basin sedimentary deposits.

This presentation will cover: the importance of high-quality safety leadership; insights from a Safety Climate Survey that includes responses from 7903 employees working at 19 Australian mining organisations; the results of a critical control verification (CCV) coaching intervention; and recommendations for improving safety leadership in high-risk work settings. Safety climate is a representation of the deeper culture that exists in an organisation. Safety climate is predictive of behaviour, performance and reporting in organisations. Leaders play an important role in the establishment and maintenance of culture. Perceptions of safety climate were collected from 19 Australian mines (n = 7903 employees). These results indicate that the Australian mining sector is doing well in team support for safety and supervisor safety commitment. There were negative perceptions of willingness to report errors, employee involvement in safety initiatives, psychological safety and emergency readiness. Perceptions of safety leadership were in the fair range, with recognising behaviours perceived lowest, falling in the poor range. The underreporting rate was at 25 per cent indicating that 1 in 4 incidents are not being reported. Analyses exploring climate, leadership, safety behaviour and well-being will also be discussed. The integrity and success of critical risk management systems is often determined by the quality of safety leadership. Leaders need a mix of technical safety knowledge and interpersonal skills to be able to support the workforce to build critical control knowledge that invites open and collaborative discussions to find new or improved solutions. Forty leaders at a major mining operation completed training and 5-weeks of coaching focused on developing critical control verification competencies. The follow-up evaluation demonstrated significant improvements in relationship building, observation of controls and overall capability. Overall, insights from multi-organisation climate data and a prepost coaching intervention will be discussed and recommendations and practical guidance for leaders will be provided.

DCF Valuations are very important to individuals and companies involved in the mining industry. Such valuations are critical to investment decisions in relation to new and existing projects. In particular they provide fundamental information to shareholders in the event of a capital raising or takeover and to financiers supporting mining companies and projects. Also, DCF Valuations are often used to support asset carrying values in the financial statements of mining companies. This paper presents a Chartered Accountant's (CA's) perspective on the main issues to be considered in preparing, analysing and relying upon DCF methods in mineral valuations and provides some practical examples relating to key issues. The paper makes the important point that DCF methods involve making assumptions about future events and circumstances that inherently contain uncertainty which results in a valuation prepared on a DCF basis providing a range of values that are not perfect or accurate. In order that DCF valuations provide meaningful information the underlying methodology used and assumptions made must be consistent, sound and well supported. Credibility of those involved in preparing mineral valuations is vital and this paper supports the adoption of sound practices by all concerned.
