The safe operation of gas transmission pipelines is increasingly coming under the spotlight. Increasing environmental pressure is also forcing pipeline owners and operators to ensure the integrity of their pipelines. The integrity of a pipeline is usually determined using intelligent pigging, often referred to as In Line Inspection (ILI). However, in many cases, gas pipelines cannot be pigged for a variety of reasons. The National Association of Corrosion Engineers (NACE) has recently published Recommended Practice (RP) 0502, referred to as the External Corrosion Direct Assessment (ECDA) Methodology to assist pipeline owners with assessing the condition of pipelines that cannot be pigged. 2. External Corrosion Direct Assessment - NACE RP 0502 The ECDA Methodology is conducted in four phases as follows: ? Pre-Assessment ? Indirect Inspection ? Direct Examination ? Post-Assessment In the Pre-Assessment Phase, all the relevant historical and current data relating to the pipeline in question is reviewed. This covers pipeline, construction, soils/environmental, corrosion control and operational data. The aim of the Pre-Assessment Phase is to determine whether ECDA is feasible, and if so, to define the ECDA Regions and finally to select the Indirect Inspection Tools that will be used for each region. The following is a report on the development of two unique and separate cofferdam systems used in the construction of the marine foundations for the I-205 Columbia River Bridge at Portland, Oregon for the Oregon Department of Transportation. The first of these two systems utilized interlocking H-pile 100 ft long to form a cofferdam 145 ft by 58 ft in plan and 100 ft deep. The second system consisted of two immense bell shaped steel forms. The larger of the two forms was 83 ft by 66 ft in plan, 62 ft high and weighed 450 tons. This form was externally stiffened for a designed hydrostatic head of 54 ft. Both forms were designed, except for the top 14 ft, to be set and stripped in one solidly welded unit. The supporting geological formation for the bridge foundations is the Troutdale, a cemented sand and gravel. This formation is at the ground surface on the Washington Shore and slopes downward to a depth of 115 ft below normal high water at about mid-channel. In this area the Troutdale formation is covered with a layer of fine to medium sand 90 to 100 ft thick. It was the variable depth of the Troutdale which determined the two types of foundations and the corresponding to the two cofferdam systems.

The work is motivated by the automotive customer requirements for a roughness with high peak density (RPc > 75 peaks/cm) on steel sheet surfaces to maintain a good strip surface finish after painting. For that purpose, a new approach is utilized to compute roughness transfer and predict final roughness on uncoated steel sheets (average roughness, skewness, peak density) as a function of temper rolling conditions. The approach is based on the Monte Carlo method combined with the Abott curves and an auto-correlation function to numerically generate roughness profiles for roll and strip respectively. To compute the roughness transfer due to the interaction between roll and strip surfaces during rolling, a composite Abott curve that combines roll and strip Abott curves is used with an asperity crushing model integrated with a rolling model. This enables simulating two roughness transfer mechanisms in the roll bite: the strip asperity crushing mechanism by roll roughness and the strip asperity ploughing mechanism due to roll-strip interfacial sliding speed. The model shows the importance of considering the two mechanisms to predict roughness transfer correctly when strip elongation is high, typically a few percent, and roll bite friction is low. In these conditions, the forward slip at the exit of the roll bite tends to erode strip roughness significantly and decrease considerably the peak density on the strip. For lower elongation levels (~1%) and high roll bite friction, the ploughing mechanism becomes negligible and roughness transfer is controlled by the crushing mechanism only. With these two mechanisms, the model reasonably predicts the evolution of average roughness and peak density over a wide range of temper rolling conditions (new/worn work rolls, hard/soft grades, various elongations), but skewness is more difficult to predict for some trials.

"IntroductionThe objective of this chapter is to provide important criteria relating to the operation and maintenance of spiral concentrators and Reichert cones, so that optimum performance can be achieved and maintained in a mill circuit. Little space will be devoted to the theory of the forces of separation or the technical details of the devices, as that in(ormation is available from other sources. The discussions in this chapter will be presented in a manner that should be interesting and useful to anyone who may be exposed to these methods of gravity separation. It is most important for the reader to understand that each application of the equipment should be considered on its own merit, as no two suites of minerals respond exactly alike in mineral processing circuits. The information herein should be useful as a guide toward increasing the metallurgical efficiency of the processes, irrespective of the type of minerals being concentrated.It is highly recommended that certain tools be made available to the personnel responsible for metallurgical performance of the spirals and cones; these include a set of standard type laboratory screens, a medium quality petrographic microscope, and a vanning plaque or gold pan. These devices, when used in conjunction with a basic understanding of the mill circuit, provide immediate knowledge on the characteristics of any sample in the mill circuit. The information gained by visual evaluation of sized fractions of products can solve many of the basic problems of mineral beneficiation, and at the same time increase the interest of the non-technical personnel associated with the plant operation. There are many problems associated with obtaining satisfactory performance from a mill operation. Many of the problems have to be solved using a technical approach. Some of the problems, however, can be solved with practical knowledge and common sense. It is hoped this chapter can provide a guide to both techniques."

Mine value chain reconciliation (MVC) is a necessary procedure to evaluate a mine’s performance against the assumptions and models used to plan mining and processing operations. Using nomenclature from Parker (2012), F2 reconciliation is the ratio between material received at the mill, compared with material sent to the mill, commonly reported in terms of tonnes, grade and metal. Measurements of material sent to the mill can be estimated in many ways, including: fleet management system (FMS) records, truck counts, or volume reduction. Most time-based reconciliations (for example, month-end reconciliation) use short-term model depletions of in situ rock measured by periodic topographic scans or surveys.

Titanium (Ti) metal production from titanium tetrachloride (TiCl4) using magnesium (Mg) as a reducing agent is the well-known Kroll process. A chloride route is used to avoid oxidation of the titanium sponge. The sponge is consolidated into ingots and can then be made into powder by melting and atomizing or by hydriding/dehydriding. Attempts at direct powder production have met with difficulties, including low Ti yield and the formation of very fine particles (particles between 25-100 µm are desired). This paper discusses two methods to produce Ti powder in a molten salt medium using magnesium powder as a starting material instead of a pool of molten magnesium. The first method is a direct reduction of gaseous TiCl4 injected in the melt with the magnesium powder in suspension in the molten salt. The second method is a two stage TiCl4 reduction reaction where recycled Ti was used to form titanium dichloride (TiCl2) in the first stage followed by addition of magnesium powder into molten salt in the second stage. A correlation between Ti yield and processing variables such as TiCl4 to Mg ratio, Mg particle size, TiCl2 concentration in the melt, and reaction temperature was studied. The Ti powder formed was also analyzed for particle size distribution. Despite challenges and difficulties encountered, this paper shows some promising results which could provide guidance to others working on direct Ti powder production.

A large overburden blast was carried out at Douglas Colliery, Middelburg Mine Services, close to a national road in South Africa. The road is a busy route between Witbank and Bethal and damage to the road could not be risked. The section of road next to the blast was particularly prone to damage, because it had been mined out on its eastern flank, and the large blast was to take place on its western flank. There were thus three potential damage risks: 1. Fly rock damage to the road surface 2. Vibration damage to the road substrate 3. Damage caused by bulk displacement of the block supporting the road into the void on the mined out side. This paper presents the design and blasting methods used to control the blast and avoid these three risks. Electronic delay detonators were used in multi-decked holes. Signature data were used to determine the blast timing to make sure that delays were used that would provide destructive interference. The timing direction and sequence was decided using wave interference patterns to direct repeated shocks away from the road. The precise detonators and the odelling capability allowed effective control of the blast vibration result. Each hole was charged with two explosive decks separated by a deck of aggregate to limit the charge mass fired per delay and thus limit the reaction forces acting towards the unsupported road. The vibration and blast results are presented in the paper, together with the design that was applied. Details are provided on how the blast was charged and primed. IT has been observed by Grange and Garvey' that the homogenization of boron-treated steels could lead to complete elimination of the hardenability effect caused by boron. The experimental conditions leading to this conclusion involved the heating of steel specimens with and without boron at 2350°F for 24 hr. To prevent oxidation and decarburization, the specimens were encapsulated under vacuum in silica tubes. This observation of permanent deterioration of boron effect was noted in both a 0.63 pct plain carbon steel and a 0.25 pct C low alloy steel, both of which had been treated with ferroboron and homogenized at 2350°F for 24 hr. In another series of boron-treated steels which had been homogenized for shorter times, the effect was to reduce, but not completely eliminate, the boron effect. Under these circumstances, it was presumed that longer heating times would cause permanent deterioration of the boron effect in this series of steels also. Since the characteristic grain boundary constituent could not be formed in any of these steels after homogenization, it was concluded that possibly boron was being converted into an ineffective form through chemical combination resulting from prolonged heating at high temperatures. Assuming the validity of this observation, a series of experiments to establish the relationship between temperature of homogenization and kinetics of deterioration was contemplated. Initially an attempt was made to reproduce the results just described. For this purpose commercial lots of AISI 8640 and AISI 86B40 steels were used. The analyses of these steels appear in Table I. Hardenability evaluation was on the basis of the hardness of normalized sections. Grange and Garvey' pointed out that these steels are air hardening to some extent and such a technique can be used. For these tests the specimens were held for 20 min in a salt bath at 1600°F and then cooled in still air. Several evacuated silica capsules containing pairs of the test steels were made up and heated for 24 hr at 2350°F. A number of failures occurred among these capsules, but evaluation of the specimens successfully treated indicated a complete deterioration of the boron effect. However, examination of the surface of the treated specimens showed that some reaction, probably with the silica tube, had taken place, since none of the specimens was bright. One further test was made at 2350°F for 12 hr, using a pair of specimens wrapped in tantalum foil prior to encapsulation. These specimens appeared bright after treatment, and their hardenability evaluation showed that no deterioration had taken place. Since these steels are extremely sensitive to de-boronization at high temperatures and particularly at long times of holding, the experimental observations raised some doubt as to the real occurrence of the permanent deterioration effect. To resolve this question an experiment was undertaken in which the high temperature portion of the treatment was completed in vacuum. For this purpose a molybdenum wound resistance furnace capable of maintaining good vacuum was used. All the pertinent accessories to this furnace were machined from molybdenum stock in order to withstand the high temperature involved in the experiment. With this equipment a temperature of 2400 °F was obtained and held under a pressure of 5x10-" mm Hg for 24 hr. A specimen of each of the two test steels was suspended in the furnace and both were heated simultaneously. Temperature was measured with a standardized Pt—Pt-13 pct Rh thermocouple, whose millivoltage at 2400°F was extrapolated from the standardization equation, good up to 2200°F. The complete evaluation of these specimens is shown in Table 11. The hardness values attained by each steel after normalizing, both before and after the prolonged high temperature treatment, remain the same. A microscopic study of the decomposition products present in the microstructures of specimens at various points in the heat treatment correlated with the hardness values observed. It seems that no permanent loss of boron hardenability effect occurs, at least in these Grainal-treated steels, when deboronization is circumvented. Rheological measurements have found a wide array of applications in mineral processing research. Rheological properties of mineral suspensions are highly dependent on the mineral surface properties as described by DLVO theory, and the relationship between these properties and inter-particle interactions is well established. In this paper, rheological properties of mineral suspensions are used to study the differences in behaviour of isotropic talc and anisotropic zirconia minerals as a function of varying properties of the suspension medium, such as pH and polymer dosage, specifically carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC). It was found that the rheological tests when carried out in parallel with electrophoretic or point of zero charge measurements, clearly reveal differences between behaviour of the suspensions of isotropic and anisotropic minerals. These differences are further accentuated with the addition of carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC).

Holcim, one of the world's leading suppliers of cement, aggregates and concrete, has set up a few years ago a working group “Quarry” in order to optimize the performance of its central European quarry operations in terms of work safety, environmental standards and economic performance. One of the activities of this working group "Quarry" addresses the subject of blast fragmentation in the quarries. A benchmark study of the blast work in all quarries has shown substantial differences for the various operations in terms of drill& blast costs. Especially big differences were found with respect to the drilling patterns as a function of the borehole diameters and with respect to the utilization of the borehole volume for charging the explosives.

Submerged gas injection into melts contained in furnaces, ladles, or similar transfer vessels is commonly used in industrial practice. In this review paper, conditions leading to gas bubble formation at the nozzle are first summarized. The increasing gas injection rates and other conditions, such as nozzle size, lead to regimes which are commonly known as "bubbling" and "jetting". These are explained. The gas/melt interactions result in energy transfer to the melt. In recent years, a large number of researchers have investigated the relationships between the energy density and the mixing times. Their work is reviewed, and the mixing mechanisms is described. Finally, computational approaches of modeling submerged gas injection are briefly presented.

Producers of primary resources such as iron ore face the challenge of processing crude materials with increasing levels of impurities, which may result in the requirement for wet processing. This paper is a follow-up to the paper presented at the SME meeting in April of 1996. Since then, the El Abra facility has been started up, 9 months ahead of schedule, and has processed about 45 million tons of ore and produced over 700 million pounds of copper. For those unfamiliar with the El Abra materials handling and leaching facilities, a brief overview of the facility is provided. The paper will then deal in detail with such aspects of Conveyor 103, the long regenerative overland conveyor, including: actual running resistance starting and stopping procedures emergency brake test at 10,000 t/h Additionally, we shall take the opportunity to report on a catastrophic culvert collapse in October 1996, which stopped the conveyor abruptly at full speed and under high load condition, causing a belt breakage. We would like to use this opportunity to thank the management of El Abra and Cyprus Amax for providing assistance and allowing us to present this paper. The El Abra team deserves a great compliment for building this one billion dollar facility in record time in a remote area of a high-altitude desert with no existing infrastructure, and for bringing it so quickly up to full operating capacity. The El Abra management had to assemble a completely new operator team. Considering the above circumstances, it took a great effort by all involved to achieve success. The official performance test which was required by the lending banks was successfully concluded in November 1997.

Fragmentation is one of the most relevant parameters in the design and operation of a mine using the caving mining method. Fragmentation affects all subsequent operations, including extraction, comminution processes, secondary blasting and transportation.There are a number of different models in the literature to estimate the size of the ore fragments that report to the drawpoints; however, there is still no industry consensus about which one to use. This paper proposes a new model for predicting the fragmentation reporting to the drawpoints that is based on the geotechnical unit characteristics, extraction height and column of primary ore. The model is developed from observations of fragmentation measurements in different mine sectors of Codelco’s El Teniente mine in Chile.This work focuses on the following three steps:collecting fragmentation and hang-up data from several mine sectorsdeveloping a geotechnical block model using oriented core placed within the main geotechnical unitsanalysing the data and modelling the fragmentation process.The proposed model is used to discuss the mechanisms and the influence of preconditioning on the size of the ore fragments that report to the drawpoints.CITATION:Brzovic, A, Vallejos, J, Arancibia, E, Burgos, L, Delonca, A, Gaete, M and Barrera, V, 2016. Stillwater Mining Company operates an electric furnace at its smelter in Columbus, Montana to treat a Ni-Cu-platinum group metal concentrate along with secondary PGM bearing materials. Hatch Associates has designed several improvements to this furnace, which was originally built by others. Implementation of these relatively low cost improvements has resulted in substantial increases in furnace availability and capacity, along with reduced unit costs. ? The improvements included: ? Installation of water-cooled copper cooling elements to stabilize refractory wear and increase furnace life.- ? Improved furnace 'bindings, to enhance the furnace's structural integrity by improving the contact between the refractory and cooling elements, and by promoting tight brick joints resistant to matte or slag leaks. ? Adjustment of the electrode regulator to allow higher furnace power levels. ? Installation of an automated air-slide (aeration conveyor) feed system to evenly distribute the furnace feed in an insulating layer on the bath surface. This "black-top" practice reduces unit energy costs and makes available additional smelting capacity.- ? Electrode seals to reduce ingress of air that absorbs heat before exiting the furnace in the off-gas stream. The saved energy can be used to smelt additional concentrate. This paper describes the above furnace modifications, and the benefits derived from their implementation.

The interpretation of coal seismic data requires a certain precision and accuracy to make the results more reliable. The signature of the seismic wavelet provides a host of valuable geologic information. Subtle features and anomalies, not easily observed in conventional black and white seismic sections, are enhanced through color attribute displays in terms of frequency, amplitude and phase. Coal seam anomalies like sandstone washouts produce a distinct pattern in frequency and amplitude displays due to the change in the net acoustic impedance contrast. Faults produce frequency and amplitude variations due to interference within the Fresnel zone that straddles the fault. The magnitude of displacement is estimated by studying the effects of faults on reflection amplitudes and frequency from computer-generated models.

WHEN Germany invaded Poland in September, 1939, the only operating helium plant in the United States was that near Amarillo. Texas, supplied with helium-bearing natural gas from the near-by Cliffside gas field. Today the Bureau of Mines has five plants capable of producing more than 25 times the prewar helium output of the Amarillo plant. Two of the plants have received Army-Navy "E" flags for their part in the faraway "Battle of the Atlantic," where heliumfilled Navy blimps chased Adolf Hitler's submarines away from American shores. Meteorologists, watching balloons carried high into the stratosphere by helium, determined weather conditions that influenced the selection of D-day and dates for other military operation. Demand for helium doubled overnight when the Navy decided to expand its lighter-than-air activities; and as the blimp patrol proved effective, the helium demand became ever greater. A tribute to the success of the Bureau of Mines in meeting the demand for helium was paid by the late Secretary of the Navy, Frank Knox, in a letter to the Secretary of the Interior on April 10, 1944. This U.S. Bureau of Mines report describes the research effort and results for a computer-assisted appendage control system of a Joy 14CM continuous mining machine. The cutter head (shear), gathering head, conveyor, and stabilizer jack are the appendages. Positional control of each appendage is accomplished by specifying the desired position to the appendage control computer, which uses appendage position sensor data. Appendage movement is actuated until the desired position is attained as determined by control algorithms. A description of the sensors, mechanical and electrical interfaces, data acquisition and control (DAC) system, experimental method to determine appendage response characteristics (range of motion, start and stop delay times, and movement rates), and their application to the position control loop algorithms are presented. Also, the test results for the shear in an unloaded (free space) and loaded (cutting) condition of the shear are presented.

"Gallium oxide is an important semiconductor material used in optoelectronic devices (flat panel and solar cell) catalysts and sensors. One of the methods to produce ?-Ga2O3 is the so-called hydrothermal route. It is practiced by Neo Gallium Compounds and comprises of two steps: (1) the production of mainly gallium-oxy-hydroxide in a pressure vessel by reacting metallic gallium with water at 200-220 ºC and (2) the calcination of gallium-oxy-hydroxide at 700-750 ºC to convert it into ?-Ga2O3. This paper describes this pressure hydrometallurgy process supported with relevant thermodynamic data and presents the characteristics of the ?-Ga2O3 powder produced for commercial purposes. INTRODUCTIONGallium is a relatively new metal, having been predicted by D. Mendeleev in 1871, discovered by P.E. Lecoq de Boisbaudran in 1875, and first commercially produced in the USA in 1943. Gallium is not rare, being more abundant in the earth crust than antimony, bismuth, molybdenum, silver and tungsten. However, few gallium minerals exist in nature, and the dispersion of gallium within other minerals add to the complexity of its recovery. In practice, gallium is found in dispersed state primarily in bauxites and in some sphalerites, and, to a much smaller extent, in some coals. At present, a very large proportion of the primary gallium in the world is recovered as a by-product of aluminum plants, mostly Bayer plants, where gallium is extracted from a bleed of the Bayer liquor (Roskill, 2011). In 2011, world production of primary gallium was estimated at 200 metric tonnes. In addition, there is a significant contribution of recycling to the overall yearly availability of the metal.Gallium exhibits fairly remarkable properties: it is liquid above 29.76 ºC, can be supercooled, and with its high boiling point (2204 ºC), is the metal with the widest liquid range. Gallium is magnetic, and is an excellent conductor of both heat and electricity. Gallium also displays a marked anisotropic electrical conductivity (Roskill, 2011). All these properties render gallium almost irreplaceable in the semiconductors (GaAs, GaN, GaSb, GaP wafers) and the optoelectronics industry (flat panel, solar cell)."
