"This paper will discuss the successful installation of seawalls for the first phase of a project in Long Beach in California known as the Naples Island Permanent Seawall Repair – Phase 1. How an unconventional method of pile driving resulted in the reduction of the duration of the project while using less space and maintaining minimal noise impacts to accommodate neighbors will also be discussed. Included in the paper will be how non-vibratory equipment used on this project also significantly minimized the risk of disturbances as well as settlement on residential properties; which in turn greatly reduced the risk of damage to existing structures. The first phase of a 6-phase project along a section of the canals with tight clearances and proximity to residents included the installation of a 1,912 linear-foot steel sheet pile wall system in front of the existing deteriorating walls from January until March 2015.INTRODUCTIONThis project was located in the Naples Island neighborhood of Long Beach in southern Los Angeles County, California. After 80 years of the same seawall structures lining the canals of this beautiful neighborhood, the City of Long Beach Department of Public Works decided that it was time to better protect the area’s multi-million dollar homes by repairing its crumbling seawalls. The City realized that the walls will only become worse due in part to several concerns, including bending failure for the already deflecting walls. According to the City, certain sections of the walls had a significant risk of global failure if the area experienced a “moderate” near-source earthquake (City of Long Beach, CA, 2014b). Although the seawalls were in need of major repair, this would not be simple. Due to the tight clearances of the seawalls between the homes and canals, installation would be difficult with heavy, conventional construction equipment.Phase 1 of the project involved installing sheet piles on the water side in front of existing and aging vertical concrete seawalls between the Ravenna and Toledo Bridges along the Rivo Alto Canal. See Figure 1 for the General Plan for Phase 1. Financing for this project by the City’s Tidelands Capital Improvement’s Division allowed the construction to begin in a timely manner. However, the challenges for the City included regulatory restraints that further complicated the construction in terms of the duration of the project due in part to numerous regulations from several regulatory agencies."

As part of an over-all laboratory and plant test program to determine mixing ad other techniques for a more economic use of bentonite as an iron ore pellet binder, a settling test for measuring the bentonite content within a pellet or a batch of pellets has been developed. Through this test, it has been shown that dry fracture load is directly proportional to bentonite content in batches of pellets, but inversely propor tional to bentonite content in individual pellets of the same batch. This apparent paradox is explained by a negative correlation between a pellet's size and its bentonite content and the fact that large pellets can withstand a higher fracture load than small pellets. In past attempts to characterize green and dry iron ore pellets, the authors found large variations in the results of strength tests on closely sized pellets from the same batch.' Reasons advanced for such variations in the quality of pellets in which the binder is bentonite were the presence of internal flaws and the nonuniform distribution of the binder. Even when resulting pellet strength is good, there is still the question of whether the same strength could have been attained through a more effective use of a smaller amount of bentonite. The authors' own and other studies 2-3 have pointed out the strong dependence of pellet strength on the degree of "mixedness" of the iron ore concentrate and the bentonite binder. The milling plant of Bicroft Uranium Mines Limited has been in operation for a period of 2 years. During this time many changes, both physical and chemical, have been made in an effort to improve plant efficiency. Investigational work has been facilitated greatly by the fact that the Bicroft mill consists to a large extent of two parallel circuits; however, the number of inter-related variables is great, and it is difficult to measure, let alone control, all of them simultaneously. The Bicroft mill staff feel that much progress has been made, but there is much yet to be done and many questions still to be answered. The property of Bicroft Uranium Mines is located in Cardiff Township in the Highlands of Haliburton County, southeastern Ontario, some 140 miles northeast of the city of Toronto and 70 miles due north of Lake Ontario. The ore-bearing dikes are classed as mafic, non-segregated, syenite and granite pegmatites. Microline, microline perthite, quartz, uraninite, uranotharite, fluorite, titanite, cyrolite, calcite, pyrite, pyrrhotite and molybdenite as important accessories. The mill was designed for a nominal capacity of 1,000 tpd with all sections except grinding, leaching and clarification capable of 1,500 tons. Feed was entered to one mill unit on October 29, 1956 and to the second parallel line on November 13. The total feed rate was at 1,000 tpd on November 15. The first precipitate was produced on November 12. By August 1958 the average entry had been increased to 1,410 tpd without the installation of any additional major equipment. The overall recovery has been greater than 93,0 pet do several months, but a recovery of 92.5 pct appears to be most economical. Operating time for 8 months in 1958 has been 97.1 pet although all grinding mills were relined during this period.

The heats of combustion of fuels are determined in the laboratory by means of a calorimeter, usually of the oxygen bomb type. A known weight of the fuel is burned in an atmosphere of oxygen under approximately 400 pounds pressure in a heavy metal container-the bomb- and the heat evolved is imparted to a definite quantity of water. From the rise in temperature, measured by means of a Beckmann thermometer, and other data incidental to the determination, the heat value of the sample can be calculated. On paper, the method appears simple indeed, but in practice the determination of the heat of combustion is one of the most difficult of the various coal analyses. This h as led to considerable investigational work in order to obtain formula: whereby calorific values of solid fuels could be calculated from proximate analysis data al one. The proximate analysis of a fuel consists of the determination of moisture, ash, and volatile matter, with fixed carbon by difference. Sulphur determinations properly belong to the ultimate analysis, but in this section of the country, where the sulphur content of the coal is comparatively high, a request for the proximate analysis of a fuel implies the determination of the sulphur as well.

Near-surface temperature measurements in two granite quarries show that diurnal temperature variations are significant to a depth of 1 or 2 feet, and annual temperature variations are significant to a depth of at least 25 feet. As a result, ground stress anomalies due to temperature exist near the surface, and their magnitude depends upon the time of day and the time of year. Rock stress and corresponding temperature measurements were made in one granite quarry over a rock temperature range of 33° to 81° F. Measured rock temperatures show good agreement with values predicted from one-dimensional heat flow theory. Calculated and measured stress-temperature coefficients for the two granites in this study are given. Thermally induced stress variations in near-surface rocks tested were as large as 1,690 psi from combined daily and seasonal temperature changes.

This article outlines the results of a computer simulation reproducing the transport of a mixture of air and methane following the outburst on 25 November, 2005 in transport gallery D-6, bed 409/4, at the ?Zofiówka? hard coal mine. Based on a mathematical model, numerical method and boundary conditions from the disturbance caused by the outburst, the Ventgraph system of computer simulation programs was adopted for the study. We performed a computer simulation of the influence exerted by the outburst on the propagation of the air and methane mixture, and compared the results of this simulation with those of the actual event as registered by sensors of the mine monitoring system. A validation of the model allowed us to present temporal changes in the concentration of methane and air along flow routes. The Bureau of Mines is operated to assist in promoting economic development through increased efficiency in the mining, preparation, treatment, and utilization of mineral substances; to aid in conserving mineral resources through preventing waste; and to help the mining industry improve health conditions and increase safety. Accomplishment of those ends is sought through investigation of scientific, technologic, and economic problems of the, mineral industries and dissemination of resulting information. Building materials of mineral origin constitute an important product of mining, and the Bureau makes studies of these in the various fields mentioned. The following commodities come within this classification: Asbestos, anhydrite, asphalt, cement, clay and clay products, diatomite, dolomite, glass and mineral wool, granite, greenstone, gypsum, lightweight building materials, lime, limestone, magnesite, marble, sand, sand and gravel, sandstone, sand-lime brick, slate, soapstone, and trap rock.

"The National Safety Competition conducted by the Bureau of Mines, United States Department of the Interior for the promotion of safety in mines and quarries, has just been closed for seventeenth consecutive year. Enrollment covered more plants than in any previous contest. Moreover, a larger volume of employment was represented than in the contests of previous years, and several new plants were enrolled for the first time. Six safety trophies are awarded annually in these competitions one to the leading plant in each of six groups. An anthracite, mine in Pennsylvania, a bituminous-coal mine in West Virginia, a metal mine in Tennessee, a nonmetal mine in Virginia an open-cut mine in Minnesota, and a quarry in Alabama won the 1941 trophies.To be eligible to win a trophy, a mine or quarry must have had at least least 25 men working under ground or in the pit for not loss than 100 days. The number of man-hours worked must total 30,000 or more. Mines or quarries having no accidents during the year are rated according to the number of man-hours worked. If there are no plants with accident-free records, the mines and quarries in each of the six groups are rated according to their accident-severity rates; the plant having, the lowest rate is declared the winner.The Sentinls of safety trophies presented to the winning mines and quarries in the six groups were donated by the Explosives Engineer magazine to promote safety in the mineral industry. They are held by the winning companies for 1 year or until won by other mines and quarries."

Underground mining for gold began in Beaconsfield in 1877 and development of the Tasmania Mine saw the sinking of multiple shafts, including the Hart Shaft over the ensuing 35 years. The mine closed in 1914 at a depth of 455 m due to prevailing economics, eventually reopening in 1999. The modern mine closed in 2012 after extending the mine from a historical depth of 455 m to the exhaustion of the modern Ore Reserve at a depth of 1210 m. West Tamar Council took over the lease for the immediate area around the Hart Shaft as an extension of the adjacent museum. The Hart Shaft and above ground structures became a significant drawcard for visitors. Tasmania was affected by sustained wet weather during May, June and July of 2016 which caused severe flooding and significant Statewide damage. This uncharacteristically intense wet weather caused saturation of the ground surrounding the Hart Shaft. Eventual shaft failure was first identified in August 2016. The failure of the shaft occurred at approximately 50 m below surface and resulted in a plug of material completely blocking the shaft. Significant surface subsidence affecting the surface infrastructure ensued. Due to the unstable nature of the surrounding material, it was determined that addressing the failure above the blockage would not provide a permanent solution to prevent the continued flow of material into the shaft. Many options to stabilise the shaft were considered, however it was assessed that a concrete plug in the shaft in competent ground at a depth of 100 m below surface and well below the blockage, would provide the only long-term solution. Man-entry was considered unsafe. The solution to access ultimately entailed filling the entire shaft with granular fill up to 100 m depth to act as formwork for a concrete plug. The rising mains at 400 mm and 250 mm diameter, which remained in place in the shaft, provided the avenue for placing the fill and ultimately, the concrete plug. Once the plug was in place the remainder of the shaft up to the underside of the blockage and over the top of the blockage to the surface was successfully filled with a combination of more granular fill and flowable cement stabilised sand. The Hart Shaft and surrounding above ground infrastructure was successfully stabilised and re-opened to tourist access. CITATION:Johnson, D, Turner, A and Hills, P, 2018. An investigation into the use of impinging stream (jet) reactors for the leaching of a free milling ore produced an increase in gold recovery by 10% while decreasing leaching time by up to 90%.Tests on refractory ores demonstrate no apparent improvement in recovery. However, leaching kinetics are dramatically increased when these ores are subjected to jet reaction prior to agitation.

"A case study for the application of a novel geostatistical technique for resource estimation of a narrow steeply dipping, gold-silver mineralized quartz vein deposit is presented. The technique is novel in two respects. First, mineral grades are kriged directly rather via the accumulation method more often applied to vein deposits and, second, a modified 2D ordinary kriging algorithm is used that allows the calculation of a single grade and variance for irregular shaped blocks of varying sizes. The objective of this investigation was to evaluate the suitability of this novel geostatistical technique for resource estimation of the Poura mine deposit and, if appropriate, to lay a firm foundation for future geostatistical work at the mine.The reserve estimation concentrated on the remnant ore blocks and pillars in both underground and surface workings. The data, which was collected in 2D coordinates with grade and vein thickness values, was first analyzed statistically and used to compute experimental semi-variograms. Appropriate semivariogram models were fitted and various aspects of the estimation technique were evaluated using cross-validation error analysis, with acceptable results. A block kriging computer program called Krige2D was developed to implement the modified 2D kriging algorithm and calculations. Production data were not available to evaluate the computed block resources, but they were compared with a previous resource data determined using an arithmetic approach. The geostatistical technique estimated slightly higher grades but lower overall tonnages as compared to the earlier arithmetic estimates."

"IntroductionTHE HISTORY of Nova Scotia's gypsum industry goes back about two hundred years. The extensive deposits found in the Windsor formation, which is Lower Carboniferous, were the first discovered in North America and were known to the earliest .settlers. There has been a steady increase in production from these beds, except for minor setbacks in years of wars and depressions, but at the same time there has been a decrease in the number of operating quarries. This decrease reflects the change from the days of horse-and-cart recovery to the modern, large-scale, highly mechanized operations. In the beginning, almost any outcrop could •supply the tonnage requirements and the most •convenient were selected, but the millions of tons needed to meet present-day needs are not easily found.Despite the size and importance of the Nova Scotian deposits there has been little detailed geological work. Sir Charles Lyell, in 1843 ( 10), established that the beds are Lower Carboniferous and this was confirmed by Sir William Dawson (3) a .few years later. Both Lyell and Dawson agreed the calcium sulphate beds were an original part of a bedded series .but did not consider they resulted from a concentration of sea water. Lyell reached the conclusion that the gypsum was related to volcanic action in the form of heated vapours or hot springs. Dawson believed it was formed by the action •of sulphuric acid on calcium carbonate. The acid, derived from the oxidation •of iron pyrites which was abundant in the older formations, was carried by rivers into basins which were rich in shells."

SEVERAL factors which affect the segregation and solidification of killed hot-topped steel ingots are: (1) pouring temperature, (2) volume in the hot top, (3) taper in the ingot, (4) pouring rate by varying the nozzle size, (5) segregation of several elements, (6) moving ingots before completely solidified. In most of this discussion, segregation will be measured in terms of carbon variation only. All the data given are results on S.A.E. 1040 analysis of fully killed steel direct-poured in hot-topped molds giving 20-in. square ingots. Thus the variables of analysis and ingot size and contour are eliminated. Segregation results are all on the rolled-bloom size, not on the ingot itself. They are results from plant-control work and not results of special research on ingot segregation.

The Bureau of Mines and many member companies of the Industrial Sand Association have been working in several areas to reduce personal exposure to respirable dust. Areas investigated include ventilation, modification of hardware, moisture addition to the product, and improved housekeeping practices. Ventilation systems have been devised and shown to contain 100 pct of a tracer gas released within the hood. An industrial clean air island has been developed and shown to reduce dust levels 90 pct at the opera- tor's position, Modification of hardware on a bag filling machine has been demonstrated to reduce dust 83 pct at the machine operator's lapel. This particular development has been termed a significant advancement in the state-of-the-art of bag filling by industry representatives. Addition of moisture to dried product materials has been tested with results showing dust reductions of 90 pct are possible!, Control of the moisture addition method still needs refinement and costs may be prohibitive. Dust sampling results clearly show the benefits of housekeeping practices such as building cleaning and vacuum sweeping. Rotation of work schedules is also effective for reducing personal exposure.

"Stoppings in coal mines serve, important and. vital functions, such as coursing the ventilating current, sealing off abandoned or dangerous workings, sealing fire areas, and separating mines at boundaries. Stoppings may hold back water, but normally that is not their function; their design is, or should be very different from that of a hydraulic dap which is designed to a definite load, often a very heavy one, from one direction over an indefinitely long period. Hence, a dam usually requires an arched structure to resist hydraulic pressure, and it must be massive to meet vertical stresses due to heavy ground pressure.Stoppings are designed primarily to resist a pressure applied laterally through air or gases. Their strength cannot be stated without specifying the direction of applied load. A stopping may be placed in stress by proof pressure subsequent to erection, through extraction of pillars in the vicinity which may act direct, or by squeezing the ribs or heaving the floor. These forces act more or less parallel to the faces of the stopping and may be very great but measures must be taken suitable to each case, and it is impossible to allow for these in general specifications other than to call for normally good construction. A stopping is principally designed to resist the action of forces at right angles to its face, such as the shocks of blasting, the pressure of gas from instantaneous violent out bursts such as have occurred in certain British Columbia coal mines, sudden compression of the air by great falls of roof in closed spaces, and at time pressures that accompany an explosion of either fire damp or coal dust or both. This paper deals with the tests of pressures of explosions only."

This paper dealing with the mining methods used in producing iron ore from an underground operation located in the central-western part of the Mesabi Range in Minnesota is one of a series being prepared by the Bureau of Mines on mining practices, methods, and costs in the various mining districts in the United States. The mine here discussed was laid out in accordance with a plan adapted to a rather unusual type of ore body, the nature of which is such that the mining method necessarily differs in certain respects from the method used at most of the mines in this district. A description of it may therefore be of interest.
