"The Red Lake Mine is situated in Balmer Township, Red Lake area in northwestern Ontario. It is an underground mine that has been in production since 1948. The property was originally known as the Dickensen Mine and was shut down in 1996.A feasibility study was carried out in 1998 and it was determined that a new mill should be constructed with a throughput rate of 600 stpd. The life-of-mine average gold grade was projected to be 1.35 oz/t with gold predominantly associated with arsenopyrite and pyrite. Metallurgical testwork indicated that the optimal flowsheet for gold recovery would include an autoclave for oxidation with a carbon circuit for adsorption. To limit capital cost and establish cashflow, the mill was constructed without an autoclave. The recovery by gravity and cyanidation was projected to be 83%. A flotation plant was constructed at the tail end of the circuit to recover the additional gold associated with sulphides from the leach circuit tailings. This material is being stockpiled onsite for future oxidation treatment.Detailed engineering was started in early 1999 and the first gold was poured in August 2000. One feature of the project was the use of Contact Lake equipment from Cameco’s Contact Lake project. The entire mill was purchased and equipment re-used where possible. The capital cost for the process facilities was C$3 1.5 million."

CERN, the European Laboratory for Particle Physics, is, at present, constructing an underground tunnel and cavern network to house a Large Electron Positron (LEP) colliding beam machine. This paper describes the techniques adopted to permit the excavation and temporary support of the access shafts through a series of glacial moraines, at depths of up to 80 m, to reach the bed-rock. Owing to the presence of superficial and deep water-tables, the variable nature of the moraine deposits and, above all, the tight work schedule, a combination of diaphragm walling and ground freezing was employed.

The typical reactions which the reductants undergo during ferroalloy production are reviewed, and identified as reaction with CO2 and with SiO, and dissolution in metal. Available reactivity tests for these three reactions are reviewed. It is proposed that it is worthwhile considering dissolution kinetics as a reactivity parameter. Greater crystallinity of the reductant decreases CO2 and SiO reactivity, but increases dissolution rates.

"This report on the properties of motor fuels sold through service stations ni the Unietd States is a continuation of a series of reports made in accordance with a cooperating agreement between the Coordinating Fuel Research (CRF) Committee of the Coordinating Research Council (CRC)3/ and the Bureau of Mines of the United States Department of the Interior. The first of these reports presented data on motor gasolines sold during the winter of 1935-36.4/ Further reports were issued describing motor gasolines sold during the succeeding summers and winters to and including the summer of 1941.4/ No reports were made on motor gasolines sold during the winter of 1941-42 and during the summer of 1942. However, starting with the winter of 1942-43, the semiannual reports were resumed.4/The present report presents analytical data for 1,381 samples, representing the products of approximately 75 companies. Most of the samples represented in this report were secured during July and the first half of August, 1945. As in previous surveys, the companies covered by the survey include both large and small suppliers. Conforming to former reports, the data cover three groups of samples – regular-price, premium-price, and third-grade gasolines.As the number of analyses submitted for samples of third-grade gasoline are not considered adequate to represent this type of motor fuel, data for the analyses have not been averaged, but the individual items are tabulated. The number of samples, items and brands comprising each group is as follows: Regular-price, 733 samples, 229 items, and 57 brands; premium-price, 504 samples, 197 items, and 56 brands; third-grade, 84 samples, 28 items and 12 brands. This study was undertaken to provide a more adequate knowledge of the chemistry of the sulfide volatilization process for recovery of tin from low-grade Bolivian ores. The investigation was partly supported by the Department of State under its program for scientific cooperation with South American republics. The results of this investigation demonstrate the conditions under which cassiterite (Sn02) may be converted to stannous sulfide by reaction with pyrite or sulfur vapor, Quantitative data are given on the rate of sulfidization and on the vapor pressure of stannous sulfide.

The past decade has witnessed unprecedented growth in the development and implementation of solvent extraction technology in the extractive metallurgy of nickel and cobalt. Solvent extraction is proving to be a powerful tool, opening new opportunities for simpler, more cost efficient and environmentally sound metal refining processes. These advances, however, could not have been possible without the cooperative efforts between the nickel industry and the people and organizations involved with reagents, materials and equipment development and supply as well as solvent extraction research, aided by the accumulated knowledge and practical experience from the copper and uranium solvent extraction operations. This paper provides an overview of these developments and some of the challenges ahead.

"The recovery of gold by leaching is influenced by the size of the gold carrier particles and the chemical environment. Using the relationships between the leaching rate, infinite recovery and particle size for a given set of chemical conditions, it is possible to simulate gold recovery for various feed size distributions. However the use of these particle size relationships is only valid if the leaching of gold from a given size class is independent of the production history of this size class. For instance, to use these relationships it is necessary to verify that gold recovery from the leaching of the 200-270 mesh size class remains the same if the size fraction is taken from a coarse or finely ground ore sample. Several laboratory tests were carried out to answer that question. Results of the tests show that within the large error margin associated to gold content measurements, the history of the production of a size class does not affect the gold leaching from that size class. Emphasis of the discussion is put on the difficulty associated with the processing of data containing significant measurement errors as it is the case for gold assays of leaching tests.INTRODUCTIONMore than 75% of the gold produced in the world is extracted by cyanide leaching of gold ores. The ore is ground to expose the gold carriers and the ground material is reacted in an oxygenated cyanide solution that dissolves gold, leaving solids gangue minerals that are disposed to tailings ponds or returned in underground mines as paste fill. The gold contained in the solution is recovered by either the carbon in pulp process or by cementation onto zinc powder, before being melted and casted into a brick (Marsden and House, 2006)."

"Ore grades are decreasing and ore deposits are becoming more complex. In order to make a sound economical decision about a mining project, metallurgical testwork must be carried out. A few large “representative” samples cannot represent the metallurgy of a large ore body and a large number of samples reflecting variation in ore head grades and in mineralization types must be obtained for proper metallurgical studies, including flowsheet development for a greenfield project. A relationship can be established between the recovery of valuable minerals and ore grade for each mineralization type. This relationship can be used to establish a correlation between values recoverable and values contained in the ore body that can include multiple pay metals. With this information, a sound economical decision can be made about the viability of a large mining development project.INTRODUCTIONThe demand for minerals today is historically high as many countries are being rapidly industrialized. The supply for these minerals is not necessarily running short. However, it is widely accepted that the world today is running short of the easy to mine and easy to process ore deposits. As ore grade is decreasing and ore mineralogy is becoming more complex, metallurgical testing must be fully conducted in order to make a sound economical decision about a mining project. For a high-grade and high-quality deposit, it is hard not to make a good profit even with low metal prices. For a low-grade and hard to process deposit, the profit margin is much lower and is dependent on the throughput and the recovery of valuable minerals. The recovery of valuable minerals is a function of ore grade and mineralogy and it must be experimentally determined for a given processing option.At Vale Base Metals Technology Development, metallurgical testing for an existing operation or brownfield project is termed as Ore Evaluation, while metallurgical testing for a greenfield project is termed as Flowsheet Development (Xu, 2011). In the past, metallurgical testing involved a few large composite samples for lab and pilot plant testwork. As ore deposit becomes less homogeneous and more variable, a few large composite samples cannot represent the metallurgy of a large ore body. In addition, useful information about the deposit such as zones of “impurities” or floatable rock minerals would not be obtained. Different processing strategies could have been developed if the locations and sizes of these zones were known in advance. For proper metallurgical studies, a large number of samples reflecting variation in ore head grades and in ore mineralization types must be used. A relationship can be established between the recovery of valuable minerals and ore grade for each mineralization type. This relationship can be used to estimate values recoverable in the ore body that can include multiple pay metals. Ultimately, the recovery verses ore grade relationship will be used in business decision-making."

Synthetic rock with predictable porosity and permeability has been Prepared from mixtures of sand, cement and water. Three series of mixes were investigated primarily for the relation between porosity and permeability for certain grain sizes and proportions. Synthetic rock prepared of 65 per cent large grains, 27 per cent small grains and 8 per cent Portland cement, gave measurable results ranging in porosity from 22.5 to 40 per cent and in permeability from 0.1 darcies to 6 darcies. This variation in porosity and permeability was caused by varying the amount of blending water. Drainage-cycle relative permeability characteristics of the synthetic rock were similar to those of natural reservoir rock. INTRODUCTION The fundamental behavior characteristics of fluids flowing through porous media have been described in the literature. Practical application of these flow characteristics to field conditions is too complicated except where assumptions are overly simplified. The use of dimensionally scaled models to simulate oil reservoirs has been described in the literature. 1-3 These and other papers have presented the theoretical and experimental justification for model design. Others have presented elements of model construction and their operation. In most investigations the porous media have consisted of either u ncon soli da ted sand, glass beads, broken glass or plastic-impregnated granular substances—materials in which the flow behavior is not identical to that in natural reservoir rock. The relative permeability curves for unconsoli-dated sands differ from those for consolidated sandstone. The effect of saturation history on relative permeability measurements is discussed by Geffen, et a1.4 Wyga15 has shown quite conclusively that a process of artificial cementation can be used to render un consolidated packs into synthetic sandstones having properties similar to those of natural rock. Many theoretical and experimental studies have been made in attempts to determine the structure and properties of unconsolidated sand, the most notable being by Naar and Wygal.6 Others have theorized and experimented with the fundamental characteristics of reservoir rocks. This study was conducted to determine if some general relationship could be established between the size of sand grains and the porosity and permeability in consolidated binary packs. This paper presents the results obtained by changing some of the factors which affect the porosity and permeability of synthetically prepared sandstone. In addition, drainage relative permeability curves are presented. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Mixtures of Portland cement with water and aggregate generally are designed to have certain characteristics, but essentially all are planned to be impervious to water or other liquids. Synthetic sandstone simulating oil reservoir rock, however, must be designed to have a given permeability (sometimes several darcies), a porosity which is primarily the effective porosity but quantitatively similar to natural rock, and other characteristics comparable to reservoir rock, such as wettability, pore geometry, tortuosity, etc. Unconsolidated ternary mixtures of spheres gave both a theoretically computed and an experimentally observed minimum porosity of about 25 per cent.7 By using a particle-distribution system, one-size particle packs had reproducible porosities in the reproducible range of 35 to 37 per cent.6 For model reservoir studies of the prototype system, a synthetic rock having a porosity of 25 per cent or less and a permeability of 2 darcies was required. The rock had to be uniform and competent enough to handle. Synthetic sandstone cores were prepared utilizing the technique developed by Wygal.5 Some slight variations in the procedure were incorporated. The sand was sieved through U. S. Standard sieves. INJURY experience and employment data are presented in this chapter for metal and nonmetal mines, stone quarries, sand and gravel pits, iron blast-furnace slag plants, and metallurgical plants (including ore-dressing and nonferrous reduction plants and refineries) in the United States. Employment and injury experience data for all mineral industries are given in volume II. The 1962 figures are preliminary summations which are subject to revision. They were compiled from all reports from producers received by the Bureau of Mines through April 15, 1963. The data for metal, nonmetal (except well and brine operations), stone, and sand and gravel operations were collected by a mandatory reporting system under the provisions of the act of September 26, 1961, Public Law 87-300 (75 Stat. 649). The act authorized the Secretary of the Interior to study the various aspects of safety in metal and nonmetal mines (excluding coal mines) and report the findings 2 years sub-sequent to the enactment of the law. Data on nonmetal well and brine plants and nonferrous reduction plants and refineries were reported voluntarily by the operators. METAL MINES Preliminary data for the metal mining industry comprise reports on 1,871 mines and pits. The combined fatal and nonfatal injury-frequency rate was 31.95 per million manhours in 1962, a decrease of 8 percent from the similar rate of 34.54 in 1961. Metal operations reported a total of 61 fatal and 3,201 nonfatal injuries.

A method of top slicing has been devised at the Miami Copper Co.'s mine at Miami, Aria., which differs radically in some ways from the customary methods of top slicing. The area of that section of the orebody in which top slicing is used is about 800 ft. square. The ore, while for the most part soft, is, nevertheless, considerably harder than the capping. The latter is siliceous, seldom containing any clay or other binding material, and breaks into fine particles so that it runs like sand if given the opportunity. Because of these facts, and because the ore is above the average grade of the mine ore, it has been mined by top slicing. Haulage levels are opened up 150 ft. apart, vertically, with two sub-levels between at 50-ft. intervals, to facilitate the putting up of ore chutes. These sublevels are used during slicing for distributing air in the ventilation system. On the haulage level the drifts are spaced on 50-ft. centers, and raises along these drifts are also spaced on 50-ft. centers, except the incline raises as hereafter noted. The raises are cribbed where necessary. Where the wear will be excessive, 1/4-in. iron plates are spiked to the top of every third set of cribbing, for its protection. When top slicing was first used, an attempt was made to carry a slicing face from fifty to several hundred feet long. Timber and other supplies were brought in through long drifts from an auxiliary shaft. Great difficulty was experienced in keeping these drifts open, the side pressure breaking the posts and the top weight breaking both caps and posts. Furthermore, the men could not work efficiently while these drifts were being repaired. The slicing faces advanced irregularly, due to varying conditions, and in many ways the results were not all that could be desired. It was then decided to divide the slicing area into blocks 200 ft. square and this was later changed to 250 ft. square. At the center of each block a two-compartment raise is put up as a supply raise, the compartments being 2 ft. 6 in. and 4 ft. by 4 ft. 4 in., the smaller being used as a manway. The sublevel caving (SLC) mining method is becoming more widely adopted as an underground mining method as mines become deeper and target lower grade mineralisation. SLC has been successfully adopted in increasingly complex and wide-ranging conditions in the past 10–20 years, demonstrating the flexibility of the method. Various challenges encountered at SLC mines around the world have led to significant differences in operating practices, mine performance and mine productivity. Unfortunately, aspects related to productivity, operational performance and best practice are not widely published and remain with individual companies. Limited information is publicly available to compare operational performance of SLC mines in the various conditions where the mining method is now being applied. To overcome this shortcoming, a global review of SLC operations was undertaken over a three-year period as part of the Cave Mining 2040 research consortium. The purpose of the review was to document technical and operational practices, hazard management strategies and key benchmarking metrics at SLC mines around the world. A total of 21 mines spread over four continents and 17 different mining companies were included in the project. The main outcome of the project was a manual of operational and technical practices, benchmarking of key metrics and documentation of the current state-of-the-art for each aspect of SLC mining. This paper describes the main findings from the benchmark in terms of mine productivity, including mine development, production and mining costs. The implications of mine scale, depth and ground conditions on operational performance at each of the benchmarked mines is described and charts are provided comparing key productivity metrics.

The Cayeli volcanogenic massive sulphide deposit is located in Black Sea region of Turkey. Cayeli Bakir Isletmeleri (CBI) was formed as a joint venture between Inmet (Canada) and Eti Holding (Turkey). CBI is processing complex copper/zinc sulphide ores. The Cayeli concentrator was commissioned in 1994, with a design capacity of 600 000 tonnes/year. The grinding circuit was a classical rod mill/ball mill combination. The rod mill was converted to a primary ball mill in May 1997. The reasons for conversion were to use mill power more efficiently and eliminate feed interruptions during rod charging. The grinding circuit now has a primary ball mill in open circuit, and a secondary ball mill in closed circuit with hydrocyclones. Classification was originally done in two stages with hydrocyclones. Both mill discharges were combined and pumped to a primary cyclopack having two, 500 mm diameter cyclones. Primary cyclone overflow was pumped to a secondary cyclopack for further classification. The secondary cyclopack had ten, 200 mm cyclones. Both unit underflows were fed to a secondary ball mill by gravity. The secondary cyclone overflow, typically 62-64 per cent passing 36 ¦m, at around 42 per cent solids (w/w) was fed to flotation circuit. In order to increase circuit capacity to 1 000 000 tonnes/year and to improve control over the grinding circuit, it was decided to convert the classification circuit from two stage to one stage. For this purpose, six Warman Cavex cyclones having 400 mm diameter were installed. Now, the combined primary and secondary ball mill discharge was classified in single stage with the Warman cyclones in closed circuit with the secondary ball mill. The cyclone overflow goes directly to the copper rougher circuit as flotation feed. The grinding circuit is producing a flotation feed of 70 per cent passing 36 ¦m. The change over to single stage classification at Cayeli was successful. A mill throughput of 1 000 000 tonne/year is being achieved with better control over classification, and improved grind size. Results and comparison between the two classification circuits are presented in the paper.

Flotation studies were carried out to recover carbon values from blast furnace flue dust containing ~30.34% carbon, 4.6% volatile matter (VM), and 65.03% ash. The variables chosen for the experiments were dispersant (sodium hexametaphosphate), pH, collector (diesel oil), and frother (MIBC). The experiments were designed according to a 24 full factorial design method and regression equations for the recovery of carbon and product grade were determined from the data. Experiments were performed to optimize recovery and grade using the steepest ascent method. The maximum recovery of carbon was 90.0% with a concentration of 56.5%, whereas the maximum obtainable grade of carbon was 66.35% with 50.45% recovery.

Tunnel and shaft plugs have been designed to assist in construction of new and rehabilitation of existing tunnels and shafts. Tunnel plugs have been used to provide construction access for side by side tunnels, separation of raw and treated water, and to allow operation of one tunnel during construction of a nearby tunnel. Shaft plugs have been used to seal up surface openings to tunnels and to prevent seepage of water to the surface through adjacent tunnels or shafts. The design construction details of tunnel and shaft plugs are provided. Typical examples of tunnel and shaft plugs are provided.

The ball level and pulp load play a key role in the operation of industrial scale ball mills. These two operating variables have a significant influence on the performance of the ball mill and any attempts to optimize these devices require manipulating either one or both of these variables. There are several models that can be employed to perform simulations to optimize the performance of industrial ball mills. However, most of these models require ball load and pulp load measurements as inputs to calibrate the model. The changes suggested by the simulator also provide operating regimes that involve moving either the ball level or pulp load and sometimes both of these variables. A ball mill model coded in JKSimMet was used in conjunction with the Sensomag to optimize the secondary ball mill at Waterval concentrator in South Africa. The results show that the perfect mixing ball mill model can be used in conjunction with the Sensomag to optimize the performance of the secondary ball mill.

New data indicate Wernecke Breccia-associated iron oxide copper-gold (IOCG) deposits likely formed from moderate-temperature, high-salinity, non-magmatic brines. The breccias formed in an area underlain by a sedimentary sequence that locally contained evaporites (potential source of chloride and possibly sulfur) and was thick enough to produce elevated fluid temperatures. Metals (Fe, Cu, Co, U) were probably derived from host strata, transported as chloride complexes, and precipitated due to changes in fluid temperature and pressure during brecciation. These new data suggest that the spectrum of genetic models for IOCG deposits that typically invoke formation from magmatic or hybrid magmatic-non-magmatic fluids should be expanded to include those systems that formed in a non-magmatic environment. Modifications to the definition of IOCG systems are proposed that reflect the degree of involvement of magmatic and/or non-magmatic fluids and the nature of the mineralizing environment. A division into magmatic, non-magmatic, and hybrid magmatic-non-magmatic IOCG types is suggested. Typical magmatic end-member IOCG deposits include Lightning Creek and Eloise, Australia. Hybrid magmatic-nonmagmatic IOCG examples include Ernest Henry and Olympic Dam, Australia. The Wernecke Breccia and Redbank deposits are suggested as possible representatives of non-magmatic IOCG end members. Endmember magmatic IOCG deposits have similarities to some porphyry deposits, whereas non-magmatic IOCG end members share characteristic with some sediment-hosted Cu deposits, suggesting that the range of IOCG deposits may form a link between intrusive- and sediment-related deposits
