This paper presents the variability of responses of paste backfill specimens that have been prepared with varying binding agent and binder combinations, when subjected to uniaxial compressive strength testing. A testing program conducted for an underground operating mine to produce cost efficient paste fill recipes using four different binding agents, in various ratios and combinations, is presented to illustrate the responses. These binding agents are Normal Portland Cement Type-10 (NPC T-10), oxidation or sulphide attack resistant binder (Binder A), replacement binder B (Binder B), and replacement binder C (Binder C). The paste fill recipes were prepared at 2, 3.5 and 5% binder content at varying binder combinations, at fixed size and tested in a Material Testing System (MTS) under constant strain rate conditions following cure times of 7, 14, 28, 56, 90, 112, 180 and 240 days. The results of tests suggested that the strength data clearly shows a trend of increasing strength with increasing binder content but not necessarily cure time. It is noted that all the blends achieved dramatic increases in strength up to 28 days of cure and then either increased or decreased moderately beyond 28 days curing, depending on the binder content and binder combination. The moderate decrease is apparent for the 2% paste fill blends and in some binder combinations of the 3.5 and 5% blends, which indicated lackluster performance beyond 28 days curing. This lackluster strength performance indicated that the binder content and combination may not be sufficient for the paste fill to achieve complete hydration and acquire adequate strength performance beyond 28 days. This study indicated that economic paste fill recipes can be designed with confidence using affordable alternative binders. However, it is noted that these alternate binders cannot be used as stand alone binders but should be used in combination with NPC to facilitate hydration of the paste fill.

The Fosterville Goldmine in Victoria Australia employs the BIOX« Process to liberate gold from its sulfidic flotation concentrate through bacterial oxidation. Gold occurrence is primarily as submicron particles in pyrite and arsenopyrite and has been described as being in æsolid solutionÆ and therefore not amenable to direct cyanidation. Once liberated by the oxidation process, the gold is then available for cyanide leaching. During the oxidation process it has been found that a portion of the liberated gold becomes suspended in the liquid phase in what appears to be a colloidal state. This liquid becomes a waste stream during washing of the oxidised solids and the suspended gold is therefore lost. A method was previously developed using an addition of quebracho tannin to significantly reduce this loss by formation of an iron-tannin precipitate which captures the gold which then reports to the cyanide leach circuit with the oxidised concentrate solids onto which it is adsorbed.This paper discusses the development and plant trial of a second processing step to further enhance gold recovery by use of flotation tailings essentially as a source of extra surface area to capture residual tannin-iron precipitate and its associated gold not recovered in the first step.CITATION:Symes, R, 2012. This report describes a field survey and laboratory investigation into the causes of failure of resiliently clad screen decks applied to coal preparation plants. Blinding of screen deck perforations and delamination of the resilient cladding are studied and mechanisms responsible for these failure modes are hypothesized. A laboratory test program to simulate the mechanisms was begun and abandoned when it became apparent that meaningful test results would require a substantially redirected effort. No meaningful test data was obtained from the laboratory simulation.

Overview Coal production in the first half of 1982 remained near the high levels begun in mid-1981. Production then fell sharply during the latter part of the year due to recession-weakened demand. Even so, 1982 coal production was estimated at 756 Mt (833.4 million st), a record high that exceeded 1980's previous production record of 752.7 Mt (829.7 million st). Though 1982 coal production was substantially below industry expectations, the attained production represented a modest achievement in view of the recession's severity. In 1982, the gross national product declined 1.8%, its worst performance in 36 years. The recession, along with mild weather, improved energy efficiency, and conservation efforts caused the nation's energy use to drop 4.1%. With the iron and steel, construction, and auto industries experiencing production declines, industrial energy use fell 10.8%. The extent to which the nation's economic slump affected coal markets in 1982 varied: • total domestic coal use declined 3.4%; • exports remained strong for most of the year; • electric utility coal use declined for the first time in 25 years; • coal use at coke plants declined by one-third; and • coal use in other industrial sectors stayed surprisingly near the 1981 level. Coal Use Domestic coal use totaled 641.8 Mt (707.5 million st) in 1982,22 .9 Mt (25.2 million st) below the 1981 level. Nearly all the decline occurred at coke plants where use dropped to 37.1 Mt (40.9 million st) in 1982 from 55.3 Mt (61 million st) in 1981. The decline in all other industrial and electric utility coal markets was only 5.3 Mt (5.8 million st). Residential and commercial coal use increased 635 kt (700,000 st) to 7.3 Mt (8.1 million st) from 6.7 Mt (7.4 million st). Power generation decreased 2.3% in 1982, the first year since 1945 that output failed to increase. The decline was due to a drop in industrial demand. Electricity sales to residential, commercial, and other nonindustrial users increased slightly. But coal's competitive position stayed strong. Power generation from oil and natural gas fell 28.9% and 11.7%, respectively. Power generation from coal declined only 0.9%. Among the primary energy sources, coal fueled 53.2% of US electric power generated in 1982, compared with 52.4% in 1981. In 1982, US steel production declined to 66.1 Mt (72.9 million st), the lowest level in 50 years and down from 109.6 Mt (120.8 million st) in 1981. The reduced steel demand forced 13 coke plants to shut down. Coal Exports Coal exports in 1982 totaled 96.4 Mt (106.3 million st), 5.7 Mt (6.3 million st) less than in 1981. Despite the worldwide recession and above normal coal stockpiles in many countries, exports were higher than many expected. This showed the relatively strong US position in international coal trade. The US continued to export near-record coal tonnages despite increasingly competitive influences. These included an improvement in Australia's labor difficulties, the return of Polish coal to Western European markets, and lower oil prices. In 1982, US port facilities were improved and expanded, and more efficient methods for scheduling foreign vessels were implemented. As a result, high volume coal shipments to US ports were routinely loaded and dispatched unhampered by bottlenecks that plagued East Coast ports in 1981. Compressed air energy storage (CAES) has been initiated recently in West Germany with a 290 MW peaking-power facility utilizing twin cavities with volumes of 150,000 m3 each in the Huntorf salt dome (1). The implementation of CAES in several geologic media is being studied carefully in the United States (2); however, the use of cavities for CAES in salt domes or salt anticlines and the associated long-term stability of these cavities is the specific topic of this paper (3). The cavities represent an essential element in a CAES plant, and thus should be designed and operated to perform with "stability" over the planned life of the overall facility. As employed herein, cavity stability implies the extent to which an acceptable amount of cavity storage volume can be utilized with economic maintenance over the planned life of the overall facility. In this sense stability is relative to the planned use of a storage cavity. Figure 1. depicts the salt deposits of the United States (U.S.) (4). The Gulf Coast region includes the only confirmed salt dome basin in the U.S., although salt structures also exist as anticlines in the Paradox Basin of Utah and Colorado. Because of the relatively small amount of elevation change within the Gulf Coast, CAES in salt dome cavities appears to hold considerably more potential for energy storage in this region than more traditional "pumped hydro" systems.

The last 25 years have seen rapid expansion in the use of helical screw pile foundations and tiebacks for new and retrofit construction of buildings and earth retention structures. An estimated $100 million was spent in 2002 on helical foundations and tiebacks in the United States alone. While design information is available in the literature, information regarding quality control, inspection and performance monitoring is lacking. Recognition of at least one manufacturer's helical foundation material by the Uniform Building Code, Standard Building Code, and BOCA (all three codes now combined into the ICC International Building Code) has given added urgency to the dissemination of reliable and practical quality control, inspection and performance monitoring procedures. This paper describes a set of such procedures that have been followed for 17 years by engineers experienced in the industry who have directly installed or been involved in the installation of over 140,000 helical foundations and tiebacks in divers soil conditions for various types of structures, including earth retention structures. Topics covered include design responsibility, building code listings and requirements, manufacturer ISO certification, manufacturing process, material and installation specifications, installation contractor certification, field placement, installation procedures, field inspection, building code inspection and performance monitoring. The paper concludes with a step by step example of practical quality control, inspection and performance monitoring procedures on a typical helical foundation project.

Designing and constructing tunnels in seismic prone areas present unique challenges to both designers and contractors. The Westside Purple Line Extension Project– Section 3 in Los Angeles requires crossing an active fault that may subject the tunnels to extreme structural demands. In order to ensure that the linings will safely accommodate the fault movement, a revolutionary composite section—steel plate embedded in the intrados of the precast concrete segmental tunnel lining was finally selected. Additionally, continuous expansion steel plates over the circumferential joints will be installed to mitigate the potential opening of the circumferential joints.

Rockburst conditions were first encountered at Inco's Sudbury area operations in the mid 1930's when mining advanced to below the 610 m (2000 ft.) horizon. Now, mining is being carried out at depths down to 2130 m (7000 ft.) at Inco'a Creighton Mine. While rockburst potentials have increased with depth. improvements in mine planning, methods, support systems and developments in destressing have alleviated the condition to where it is less of a problem now than it was in the early years. Hang of the improvements were developed, of necessity. through observation and reasoning because these were the only tools available at the time. Now, we are making use of stress - measurements, numerical modelling and microseismic source location technology to - help further reduce rockburat hazards.

"To improve the economic and environmental performance of underground mining operations, it is common practice to return the metallurgical waste material underground as backfill. This is called hydraulic backfill and is used to fill the mined-out areas not exposed to further mining. To provide mechanical support for underground mining a cemented backfill is normally used. Since its introduction, cemented backfill has allowed mining companies to increase their ore extraction and improve working and environmental conditions. However, cemented backfill represents up to 50% to 85% of the mine’s operating cost compared with 5% to 10% for hydraulic backfill.These economic pressures have led mining companies to carry out research into the partial or total replacement of cement using a variety of alternative materials. The materials are generally site-specific materials, readily available, and cost-effective relative to cement. Such investigations have led to reduced cost of many backfill mixes while maintaining, and in some cases improving, the physical properties of cemented backfill. However, in most cases, cement still remains an integral part of any binder combination. This can be attributed to the alternative binders investigated being either non-binding materials or capable of generating only low-strength backfills, except when used in conjunction with cement.This paper provides a historical review of backfilling binder materials and their characteristics. In particular, it reviews the many alternative materials that have been proposed to either partially or fully replace Portland cement as the main binder."

"Limestone is one of the most important mineral resources, and in Japan it is only one mineral which can be fully supplied by the domestic product. Generally limestone mines in Japan located at mountainous regions, and the combination between bench-cut method and the carry-out system using vertical shaft is widely used in the domestic mines. During mining operations, the occurrence of the blockage in the vertical shafts is very serious problem. Once the blockage in the shafts is occurred, a lot of works and dangerous procedures are necessary to solve the problems. It is thought that blockage is influenced by the cohesion and friction coefficient due to clay minerals thrown into the vertical shafts, however, the quantitative and precise reason is not revealed yet.In this study, the process of blockage occurrence was simulated by 2-Dimensional Discrete Element Method (DEM). In the 2D-DEM analysis, discontinuous circular particles are generated, and the individual movement of each particle is calculated by forward difference method. In the analysis, several typical ore distributions are applied, and the DEM analysis was conducted under the various combinations of cohesion and friction coefficient. From analytical results, it was found that the friction coefficient strongly influences to the occurrence of blockage and there were a threshold values which blockage does not occur. Several kinds of shaft shape were also simulated towards different ore size distributions, and those influences to the blockage occurrence were also discussed."

Santa Fe Pacific Gold's Lone Tree mine is located in Humboldt County, NV, 45 km (28 miles) east of Winnemucca. The mine currently operates a 1.74-Mt/a (1.92-million stpy) run-of-mine heap-leach operation and a 2.27-kt/d (2500 stpd) refractory gold¬ore-processing plant. Most of the mill-grade ore reserves are refractory, mainly due to pyrite and arsenopyrite encapsulation of the gold. The autoclave pressure-oxidation circuit was commissioned in February 1994 to process the refractory ore. Mineralogy unique to the Lone Tree deposit allowed for the design of a partial-oxidation process. It takes advantage of the heterogeneous nature of the pyrite morphology. Partial oxidation has resulted in an autoclave plant that is able to achieve low operating-unit costs (Figs. 1 and 2).

The LUMINEOS network was established in 2013 to monitor mining-induced seismicity in Legnica-Głogów Copper District (LGCD), located in south-western Poland. Since the starting time, the network was improved and today consists of 17 seismometers and 10 accelerometers. Up to now, the strongest recorded earthquake in the region had Mw4.0. Both raw seismic data and earthquakes catalog for events recorded by the LUMINEOS network are fully open and available on the EPISODES platform (https://tcs.ah-epos.eu/#episode:LGCD). During the last 7 years, the network improvements gave us a possibility to increase location accuracy for shallow mining events. This accuracy is influenced by factors such as the configuration of seismic stations, noise level at seismic stations, and the influence of the velocity model. Here we encountered two main issues which are worth to discuss. The first one is the low detection threshold of two seismic stations and their significant impact on the location errors. The second one is the large uncertainty in the S-wave picking. Even though S-waves are not so clearly visible on seismograms, they are very helpful in the estimation of source location and strength of seismic events in the region. In our work, we present the history of LUMINEOS network and corresponding improvement on location accuracy as well as the influence of noisy stations on the error distribution and how it is connected with location results. We also investigate the effect of the S-wave phases and how they are related to the accuracy of the earthquakes locations in the network.

Since the dismal performance of the Rand Mines management was called to account by its shareholders in 1994, the waves of change have continued to ripple across the South African mining industry .The number of listings on the gold board of the Johannesburg Stock Exchange, that once numbered 40 or 50-odd, have now dwindled to no more than a handful as unprecedented restructuring has taken place. The redefining of the industry has not been limited to the gold sector, but across the base metal, coal, diamond, platinum and industrial mineral sectors as well. At the same time the Mining Houses began to reconsider their funding strategies. Originally established in the early part of the century to ensure the long-term sustainability of their group mining operations by providing substantial financial muscle and technical support, the Mining Houses were faced with a rapidly changing political environment, which proved to be a critical catalyst in giving momentum to the change. Furthermore, the significant development costs and increasing risk profile for new projects, coupled with pressure from shareholders demanding respectable returns, opened the door to opportunities for banks to begin providing external debt by the way of project finance. However, the provision of long-term debt to the South African mining industry had generally not been common since mining companies had financed new projects with equity, or with the cash flows from existing operations. Those banks that had the appetite for exposure to the perceived high risks of the mining sector rapidly built up specialist resource banking divisions capable of addressing the increasing demands of the industry. The application of project finance, the principles of which were developed in the 1970s specifically for infrastructure projects and privatization, is now commonly applied in the financing of greenfield and brownfield mining projects. This paper outlines the approach that lending banks would typically adopt when arranging or providing mining project finance, their usual areas of concern and the way in which the finance is structured to mitigate the many inherent risks.

The kinetics of the dissolution of colloidal silver in aerated cyanide solutions has been investigated with the aim of developing a relatively rapid and convenient method for monitoring the ?leaching power? of solutions typically used in the cyanidation process. Experimental results obtained are consistent with an electro-chemical model, in which the mixed potential is set up in the active region of the polarization curve for the anodic dissolution of silver, giving rise to a rate of dissolution which is controlled by the rate of mass transport of either cyanide or oxygen to the surface of the silver. The rate of dissolution of colloidal silver was found to respond to variations in the reactant concentrations in a similar manner to gold (and silver) in a typical free-milling ore. The use of this technique for the monitoring and control of the cyanide leach process is discussed.

Introduction Charles III, Holy Roman Emperor and King of the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy, established one of the first mining schools in Europe on June 22, 1735, in Selmecbanya (Schemnitz in German and Banska Stiavmica in Slovakian). The old city, built around the ancient gold mines, is shown in a contemporary engraving in Fig. 1. Charles' historical decree consisted of 13 chapters and included: the deed of foundation, the definition of grants, instruction for educational policy and curriculum, disciplinary rules, and the appointment of personnel. The first professor of the school, Samuel Mikoviny, gave his first lecture the same year, in December 1735. The 250th anniversary of the establishment of the School of Mines was celebrated Sept. 2-4, 1985, in Miskolc. It was attended by representatives of other Hungarian and of several foreign technical universities. A silver medallion (Fig. 2) was issued to commemorate the occasion and a series of lectures

A vanadium-base alloy consisting of the following elements in weight-percent--molybdenum, 20; titanium, 10; carbon, 0.1; silicon, 0.5; and yttrium, 0.5--had exceptionally high strength at temperatures up to 1,200° C. This alloy was capable of fabrication to sheet of ~ 1 mm thickness by a combination of hot swaging and hot and warm rolling. In the warm-rolled condition at ambient temperature, its ultimate tensile strength was 1,205 MN/m2. The strength at 1,200° C was 150 MN/m2. Within the temperature range of 25° to 1,200° C, the ductility of the alloy as measured by elongation increased from 4 to >90 percent. Strengthening was achieved by both solid-solution and dispersed-phase mechanisms. Alloys of 20 percent molybdenum and 10 percent titanium were stronger than the other molybdenum-titanium alloy compositions tested. Strength was increased 15 percent in the temperature range of 25° to 800° C, with no accompanying loss in ductility, by the addition of 0.5 percent silicon. Workability was improved by additions of 0.25 and 0.5 percent yttrium.

The trip from Denver southwest to Gunnison crosses seven main geologic and physiographic areas as shown on the accompanying map. These are: I Mesozoic and Tertiary sedimentary rocks of the Denver Metro area from downtown Denver to the foothills near Morrison. II Precambrian metamorphic and igneous rocks of the Front Range from near Morrison to the west side of Kenosha Pass. III Sedimentary and volcanic rocks of South Park (Paleozoic, Mesozoic and Tertiary) from the west side of Kenosha Pass to Trout Creek Pass. IV Precambrian granitic rocks (1,350-1,480 M.Y.) between Trout Creek Pass and the Arkansas River. V Tertiary and Quaternary sedimentary rocks and sediments of the Arkansas River valley. VI Precambrian metamorphic and igneous rocks and Paleozoic sedimentary rocks of the Sawatch uplift from Maysville to near Doyleville on the west side of Monarch Pass. VII Mostly sedimentary rocks of Cretaceous and Tertiary age from the Doyleville area west to beyond Gunnison. Each area will be elaborated in the following pages but no detailed road log is given since these are available elsewhere. An attempt has been made to point out some deposits and features of interest to economic geologists but it is by no means complete.

The behavior of arsenic and antimony in the Cu-0 system was thermodynamically investigated to understand their elimination during a blister-making stage in copper smelting. Firstly, the phase relations in a miscibility gap composed of the liquid slag and copper phases in the Cu-0-As and Cu-0-Sb systems at 1523 K were established by a quenching technique. It was found that arsenic and antimony distributed preferentially into the slag phase in the miscibility gap. Secondly, the activities of arsenic and antimony in the miscibility gap of these systems were determined at 1523 K by using a double Knudsen cell - mass spectrometer method. It was clarified that the activity of arsenic in the copper and slag phases showed the negative deviation from ideality while that of antimony in the copper phase a slightly positive deviation. These data obtained in this study suggest a possibility to eliminate arsenic and antimony by means of over-blowing in a converter after discharging the slag.

As the 2016 president of the Society for Mining, Metallurgy & Exploration Inc., I am pleased to present the 2016 issue of the Transactions of the Society for Mining, Metallurgy & Exploration Inc., Vol. 340. A significant portion of the contribution that we make as a professional society is the publication of professional and technical papers that accelerate the advancement of scientific knowledge and enable the transfer of technology. Communication within the mining community is the key to a successful society. This technology exchange continues a tradition that dates back to the 1871 meeting of 22 mining engineers in Wilkes-Barre, PA, that resulted in the founding of the American Institute of Mining, Metallurgical and Petroleum Engineers (AIME). Those individuals envisioned that these transaction volumes “would form a most valuable and greatly needed addition to our professional literature.” This volume fulfills that pledge. The 2016 Transactions contains some of the most interesting research and insights from the past year and features an international slate of authors spanning industry, academia and government. Papers include the latest findings from the U.S. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) and special-issue articles on process development testing. The 2016 Transactions consists of a total of 65 technical papers, encompassing all 21 papers published in 2016 in the Technical Papers Section of Mining Engineering (Vol. 68) and all 27 papers published in 2016 in Minerals & Metallurgical Processing (Vol. 33). Additionally, this volume contains 17 papers that are being published for the first time in this issue. The papers presented in this volume were written by some of the most distinguished professionals in the industry worldwide. All of the technical papers were peer-reviewed. The process of review and publication requires much hard work by authors, reviewers and our publications staff. As the 2016 president of SME and on behalf of all our members, I would like to extend our gratitude to all whose volunteer efforts contributed to the publication of this volume.
