A team consisting of junior and senior mechanical engineering students at New Mexico Tech worked on the design of an explosively loaded vessel, with a maximum load of 15 grams (0.53 oz) TNT equivalent explosive. The main challenge presented was to meet the stringent sample positioning specification of 3 microns in two Degrees Of Freedom (DOF) and one degree of rotation in a third DOF. This is to accommodate precise sample placement in a tight x-ray beam, and to bring areas such as explosives/metal interfaces into magnified field-of-view photography. This presentation describes the process and design decisions to arrive at the final product presented to LANL in December 2014. Our engineering analysis techniques will be reviewed, including use of American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) Boiling & Pressure Vessel Code (BPVC) Code Case for Impulse Loaded Pressure Vessels (ASME BPVC Code Case 2564-3). Also discussed will be integration of Hydrocode computer models with Finite Element Method analysis.

This paper describes the installation, commissioning and operation of porous plugs featuring nitrogen gas purging in both Anode Furnaces at the Kansanshi Copper Smelter (KCS), a greenfield copper smelter which commenced operation in March 2015. The decision to install porous plugs was taken in November 2016 and the facilities were successfully commissioned on both anode furnaces in October 2017. The project was successful and has demonstrated the following process improvements: 12.2% reduction in main burner fuel consumption Larger average charge size, due to fewer accretions; 17 minute decrease in average refining cycle times Improvements in slag skimming operations Improved casting rates INTRODUCTION Porous plugs The application of porous plug technology in copper smelter anode furnaces is well established around the world. Vukovic and Gamweger (2017) and Wallner (2004) noted that the stirring and mixing action induced by the injection of inert nitrogen gas into the molten copper via porous plugs has potential benefits in the following areas: Homogenization of the temperature and composition of the molten copper resulting in Reduced fuel consumption Less tendency to overheat slag (reduced risk of refractory attack) Less slag produced with a lower degree of oxidation (lower rate of refractory wear) Less tendency for buildups to form Improved environmental performance (produce low sulphur blister at Peirce Smith converters) Elimination of buildups inside the furnace and potential for larger charges per cycle Reduced processing times and potential for shorter cycle times More efficient skimming of anode slag Shorter skimming time Less copper carry over to Peirce Smith converters Very little slag remaining in the furnace (reduced potential for buildups to form)

Yukon, one of the most potentially accessible, relatively undeveloped, regions of Canada, has major mineral possibilities. The Klondike placer gold fields and the Mayo silver-lead ?district are the sole major producers but large base-metal re-serves have been discovered in re-cent years and important asbestos deposits are now being explored. Several major exploration companies are active in this region despite short seasons, permafrost overburden, remoteness, lack of transportation, and resultant high costs. Pro-posed new roads can be expected to accelerate development. At ?present the major future mineral possibilities are considered to be lead-zinc, copper, aslbestos, silver-lead, gold, and mineral fuels. These and other mineral possibilities are outlined for various geological subdivisions of Yukon. Major favourable metallogenic features of Yukon include complexity of rock types and structures, widening of the Cordillera with cross-trends, and variety and quantity of mineralization found even with limited prospecting. Comparisons with southern 'British Columbia and the U.S. Cordillera suggest that further exploration will result in discovery and development of more major ore deposits and reserves which will eventually revolutionize economy of mining in Yukon. Such mineral resources, with interior petroleum and natural gas possibilities, and ?huge coastal hydroelectric power potential, are the foundations of a much larger future mining industry in Yukon.

Central Florida is among the fastest growing urban areas in the United States, and its rapid development has required the steady construction of various types of civil engineering works. The karst geologic terrain and variable geotechnical conditions, however, present special challenges to the design and construction of deep foundations. The subsurface profile can be idealized as a surficial layer of Pleistocene sands, underlain by the highly variable Miocene-age Hawthorn Group, consisting of various combinations of sand, silt, clay, phosphate and highly weathered limestone. The Hawthorn Group is underlain by Eocene-age limestone that comprises the Floridan aquifer. Vast networks of solution cavities are present throughout the Eocene limestone, sometimes allowing downward raveling of the overlying soils and the creation of sinkholes. In some cases, the relic sinkholes can be filled with soft compressible organic soils extending to depths greater than 100 feet (30.5 m). Driven piles are frequently employed as a deep foundation alternative, although occasionally cast-in-place piles/shafts have also been used. Piles are often driven for bearing in the weathered limestone within the Hawthorn Group, but are sometimes installed as friction piles in the upper soil and intermediate geomaterials. Dynamic pile testing is routinely performed during pre-construction test pile programs, or during production for quality control and assurance purposes. This paper presents discussions on the design and construction aspects of deep foundations unique to Central Florida subsurface conditions and local practice. Foundation issues such as subsurface variability, soil setup, pile damage, negative skin friction, and sinkhole conditions are discussed with the aid of demonstrative case histories.

Mine water in the Upper Olifants River Catchment in Mpumalanga(upstream of Loskop Dam) is at times discharged into local streams, resulting in local acidification and regional salination of surface water resources. Pollution of surface water can be prevented by collecting and treating mine water to a quality where it could be re-used without restriction (Cleanwater 2020 Initiative). Mine water in the Olifants River Catchment currently amounts to only 4,6% of the total water usage, but contributes 78,4% of the sulphate load. Limestone and lime treatment is the most cost-effective technology for neutralization and partial sulphate removal of acidic/sulphate-rich water to sulphate levels of less than 1500 mg/l due to precipitation of magnesium and removal of the associated sulphate fraction (through gypsum crystallization). Neutralized mine water of this quality may be suitable for irrigation. A number of alternative desalination treatment technologies were investigated (subsequent to gypsum crystallization pre-treatment) where treated mine water must meet more stringent quality requirements (e.g. less than 200 mg/lSO4). The capital cost of these processes varied between R4 million/(Ml/d) and R10million/(Ml/d) and the running cost between R2/m3and R5/m3. Water usage in the Upper Olifants River Catchment currently amounts to 947 Ml/d (including the power stations), and will increase to an estimated 1385 Ml/d by 2020. The additional water demand by2020 (438 Ml/d) will have to be supplied by importation from neighbouring catchments, and more efficient utilization of the local water resources, including excess mine water. Various levels of treatment are required to make mine water suitable for the following potential applications (acceptable treated water sulphate concentration shown in brackets): irrigation (2000 mg/l), coal processing plant (1000 mg/l), general industrial use (500 mg/l), discharge to public streams (500 mg/l), potable use (200 mg/l) and cooling water in power stations (20 to 40 mg/l). The following two options, or a combination thereof, can be considered for management of excess mine water in the Upper Olifants River Catchment: ?Collection and treatment of excess mine water to a quality suitable for selected urban and industrial applications (Option A) ?Collection and treatment of mine water to a quality suitable for irrigation (Option B). The estimated capital and running cost for Option A amounts to R528.5 million and R55.7 million/year, respectively, compared with R68,2 million and R11,9 million/year for Option B. It is recommended that Option B be investigated for implementation in the short to medium-term. Option B was selected due to cost benefits and the initial favourable results obtained by a joint Water Research Commission and Coal Industry initiative where mine water is used for irrigation. Option A may become feasible in the long-term to ensure maximum environ-mental protection and reduced treatment cost as a result of anticipated technological improvements over the next 5 to 10 years.

One of the problems associated with the maintenance of roadways in underground coal mines is that of dealing with roadway closure. Sidewall weakening technique is based on the transference of the high stress zone further away from the vicinity of roadway. This transferral is carried out by weakening parts of sidewalls of roadway by cut- ting slot, drilling a series of parallel holes or blasting during development stage. In the paper, the effect of sidewall weakening on the stability of roadway is studied by finite element analysis and field experiment. The finite element analysis shows that sidewall weakening can control the development of yield zone around a roadway, improving the stability of roadway. It is also shown that if in- situ horizontal stress is lower or higher than the in-situ vertical stress, it is difficult to obtain roadway stability by sidewall weakening. The field experiment shows that roadway closure can be controlled by sidewall weakening with blasting.

Beside the traditional geomechanical evaluation methods the geotechnical parameters are recognized as important facts of the planning work for multiple seam mining. Standards for applied monitoring and investigation methods for geotechnical determination of drill cores, laboratory rock-tests and observation of roadheadings are the basics for rock mechanics classification and support design. The geomechanical classification is in this context an essential element. The planning procedure, as it is becoming more and more detailed, beginning with the panel layout up to the technical instructions of roadway development and design of roadheading machinery, nowadays uses a lot of geotechnical information that also are expanding to include quantitative determination of more parameters. The current monitoring system includes the description of separation planes using drill cores and roadheading observation as well as laboratory tests of rock-strength and geophysical borehole examinations. This information is analyzed within the geomechanical standard-classification. The re-engineering process of comparison the predicted support success to the actual monitoring results provides the opportunity for continuous optimization of the planning work und support design. This way of empirical analysis is used for basic planning work in Germany for decades. But using the technical standard of information technology and a centralized database now it is possible to reach quick-win effects in implementing research results on the one hand and actual experiences on the other hand.

The geoscience matrix method has proven useful for valuing metallic mineral properties lacking delineated mineral resources or reserves. However, the method explicitly excludes commodity markets from the factors considered; marketability is assumed. When valuing industrial mineral properties, marketability cannot be assumed, it must considered. Market considerations may also significantly affect the standard weightings of geoscience matrix parameters such as the proximity to known deposits. In some cases, such proximity is desirable but in many cases it is undesirable. Application of the geoscience matrix method to industrial mineral properties therefore requires thoughtful, market-related adjustments to the basic geoscience matrix methodology.

Underground fractured aquifers in the Ernest Henry deposit are to a large extent controlled by deposit scale brittle structures. The underground mine has been subdivided into nine water zones based on hydrogeological characteristics, including conductivity and connectivity, within the mining areas bound by these structures. The nine water zones and the hydrological characteristics of the associated structures are utilised for risk assessing mine development and for targeting diamond drilling dewatering activities. Wireline and conventional underground diamond drilling techniques have been used throughout the network of underground aquifers with the aim of dewatering areas within the mining footprint. These dewatering drilling campaigns have historically been highly successful at lowering aquifer water levels throughout the underground workings. As part of recent mine expansion activities, diamond drilling has intersected high pressure (>507 psi), high temperature (>50°C) and high flow water (>3 L/sec) in as yet unconstrained underground aquifers. Groundwater is typically conducted through rubble and clay rich faults, further hampering progression of drilling. Drilling through fractured aquifers at depth presents both mine planning as well as safety challenges. Recent drill holes have been delayed or abandoned when aquifers hosting this high pressure, high flow water have been intersected, risking mine planning deadlines. Recent technological innovation developed to control groundwater outflows from the diamond drill hole whilst drilling has been trialled at the Ernest Henry Mine. This case study focuses on the utilisation of alternative drill methodologies to allow the current drilling campaign to continue without delay, whilst also improving safety conditions encountered on the drill site.

One of the most important applications of material handling engineering technology occurs in iron ore pelletizing plants. Although the total installed value of material handling systems in such plants, as well as in many other modern process plants, is a relatively small percentage of the value of the plants (5 to 10% perhaps), their significance is considerable. Indeed this significance equals that of the more expensive process equipment in the plant, since the failure of any component of any system causes, shutdown of the entire plant. It is because of this increased consequence of failure that design criteria for process plants are more conservative than for conventional material handling applications. A second unique characteristic of material handling technology applied to process plants in general is the variety of materials being handled and the wide range of problems this variety presents. One extreme encountered is the stickiness of filter cake. Here the entire design effort is aimed at keeping the material flowing through transfer points and preventing it from building up on components. Another extreme is the conveying of fired pellets - hard spheres with a very flat angle of repose and abrasive characteristics severe enough to make conventional wear plate materials impractical.

Collins Radio Company, through this contract with the Bureau of Mines, has conducted a System Study of Coal Mine Communi¬cations. The program was a three phase program to establish a data base, perform communication system analysis and optimi¬zation, and prepare equipment specifications to be included in this final report. At the start of establishing a data base both a knowledge of mine communication and coal mines in general was obtained. Communication system requirements and constraints were determined along with a survey of current and potential mine communication equipment. An investigation was completed concerning theoretical LF and VLF propagation characteristics, and UHF propagation tests were conducted in a working coal mine. Different mines were contacted and on-site surveys completed with respect to coal mine communication requirements.

In the latest AASHTO design specifications, the Load and Resistance Factor Design (LRFD) method is prescribed for the design of retaining walls. However, inconsistencies arise when LRFD is used for retaining wall design versus the traditional Allowable Stress Design (ASD). Required toe embedment and wall loading demand vary greatly when the two design approaches are compared, all else being equal. This is due to application of linear load factors to properties that vary non-linearly in the design. These inherent inconsistencies are further intensified when introducing factors such as layered soil profiles, different wall types, groundwater elevation, and surcharge requirements. When applied correctly, these two design approaches, in theory, should lead the designer to the same result with little discrepancy, as they do with steel structure design. However, the use of the current AASHTO LRFD method for various geostructural retaining wall designs yields contradictory results that suggest existing retaining walls that have been successfully designed and constructed are unstable. Fundamentally, LRFD should be built on reliability-based calibrations; the successful past performance of existing retaining structures designed using ASD suggests that the LRFD approach requires considerable modification. The authors of this paper recommend that the current LRFD load factors be reviewed and revised based on more comprehensive wall performance data and wall type such that the difference between retaining structures designed using LRFD and those designed using ASD is eliminated.

A modified Hallimond tube is described which allows the determination of the ultimate recovery R and the flotation rate constant k in a single, continuous experiment. The range of fine particles which can be satisfactorily floated with the modified apparatus can be extended by increasing the length of the bottom part of the tube. Findings suggest that pyrite and arsenopyrite can be separated in alkaline suspension using the so-called F series of collectors. Lime was found to act as a depressant. The collectors operate under pH and dosage control and do not require other depressants. Collectors used in the study were thio-amine (a cationic surfactant) and alkyl propionamide (a non-ionic surfactant)

Today, arsenic has become a much greater problem than before because of the limitations introduced by WHO and USEPA that are lowered from 0.05 ppm to 0.01 ppm. In the nature Arsenic is mostly found as inorganic compounds in the forms of arsenite (As+3) and arsenate (As+5) in aqueous solutions. Arsenic contamination in ground and surface waters has been encountered in almost every country. This element has a carcinogenic effect and can occur in natural sources and anthropogenic sources such as metal mining, groundwater usage and industrial activities. In this study adsorbing colloid flotation was applied in the presence of aluminum sulfates. In the experiments SDS and K-Oleate were used as collectors while MIBC was the frother employed. The effects of collectors and aluminum/arsenic ratios on the removal of arsenic were examined under various pH values. It was found that arsenic removal enhanced with increasing aluminum concentration. Furthermore, it was observed that pH was a very critical parameter in all experiments. The best results were obtained when initial As: SDS: Al concentrations were 10:40:40 ppm at pH 5.5. At this concentration, the efficiency of arsenic removal found to be 99.9%. This volume summarizes mining and petroleum legislation in 30 jurisdictions of the Western Hemisphere. Within these jurisdictions, primary attention is given to requirements that must be met in each country for acquisition of rights to permit development of mineral resources. Coverage includes: First, identification of the controlling laws or statutes governing minerals acquisition and reference to the administrative authority; second, analysis of the laws governing mines and quarries and their products; and third, analysis of laws applicable to natural gas, petroleum, and related materials. Where pertinent, sections dealing with historical background or administration have been added. In countries where minerals are subject to control of States or Provinces, those areas are considered separately from the central government.

RISKGATE, an Australian Coal Association Research Program-funded (ACARP) initiative, has been designed to assist the Australian coal mining industry in improving minimum standards for safety performance, efficiency, operating practice and training. The online system is innovative in that it is built upon a foundation of industry expert knowledge gathered through action research workshops, which is further supported by a broad array of industry, academic and technical resources. In operation, RISKGATE offers a continuum for knowledge transfer and communication of current practice in risk identification, assessment and management in the coal mining industry. The primary mission of RISKGATE is to focus industry attention on prioritising control management as a way to achieve acceptable risk.A Coal Mine Tailings Dam Module has recently been added to the RISKGATE suite. The key risk, or initiating event, associated with coalmine tailings dams is catastrophic failure of the dam, leading to the release of tailings and water. This can occur due to geotechnical instability of the dam itself or of its foundation, overtopping and erosion of the dam, and piping failure of the dam itself or of its foundation. Coalmine tailings dams are also prone to seepage into the foundation and through the dam, particularly during operation when large volumes of water are discharged with the tailings. The most significant risk associated with seepage is the release of potentially contaminated water to the environment. Contamination can take the form of elevated salinity, acidity and dissolved metals. Run-off from coalmine tailings can cause erosion and can also potentially contain contaminants. Desiccation of the tailings surface can result in dust generation and dispersion.The paper presents the background and context of the RISKGATE project, the need for the addition of the RISKGATE Coal Mine Tailings Dam Module, and a description of the developed module, including the five initiating events considered, their causes and associated preventive controls, and their consequences and associated mitigating controls. Ix the summer of 1842 my father, William Firmstone, was engaged by Charles Jackson, Jr., of Boston, to examine the conditions in the Lehigh valley as a site for blast-furnaces using anthracite for fuel. In consequence of his report, he was further engaged by Mr. Jackson to build a furnace for him and his partners on the Lehigh canal, 2 miles above the mouth of the river at Easton. Work was begun in the fall of 1842, and the first furnace blown-in in 1844. The history of the works, therefore, from 1844 to 1887, when my own connection with them ceased, covers only four years less than the whole period of the rise, culmination, and commencement of the decline in the smelting of iron with anthracite in America, the beginning of which, in a commercial sense, may be put in 1839.' Although this paper, as the title indicates, is concerned almost exclusively with the furnaces at Glendon, still what was done there was more or less influenced by current opinion in the dis¬trict, and even reflects, to some extent, the changes in opinion and practice with mineral fuel the world over. No. 1 Furnace was built of red brick, on four piers, had three tuyeres and fore-hearth and tymp, as was universal with furnaces using mineral fuel until the introduction of Liirmann's cinder-tuyere. The dimensions and profile are shown in Figs. 1 and 2. The first hearth (Fig. 1) was of sandstone; all after were of fire-brick (Fig. 2). The profile was no doubt derived directly from Gibbons's furnace,2 for it appears from W. Firmstone's note-books that in October, 1840, he visited ." This paper discusses the actual recovery and installation of a longwall in a bituminous coal mine in Western Pennsylvania. The coal bed mined is in the Lower Freeport seam which averages 42 inches (1.07m) in height locally. Drainage from the mine is approximately 3.5 million gallons of water per day (13.25 million liters per day). This water deteriorates the mines predominately fire clay bottom making it extremely difficult to move equipment. Support removal is accomplished by pulling the 6 ton (5443 kg) shields out under their own hydraulic power and transporting them by track over four miles (6437m) co the next longwall panel. This paper also discusses the changes that will be made to aid in the succeeding longwall recoveries and installations.

This information circular describes methods used in mining inclined beds of phosphate rock in mines operated by San Francisco Chemical Co. in Rich County, Utah. The mines are on the western flank of the Crawford Mountains, a short, narrow range in northern Utah near the Idaho-Wyoming corner (fig. 1). The western front of the range is a conspicuous wall of folded and faulted sedimentary rocks that rises abruptly 300 to 600 feet above the floor of the adjacent Bear River Valley. Rex Peak, highest point in the range, is approximately 8,000 feet above sea level. The area surrounding the mines is sparsely populated. Randolph, the county seat of Rich County, has a population of 650. It is 10 miles southwest of the mines by road and the only town in their vicinity.

"Des quartzites trés pars ont été découverts au cours de la cartographie de la region du lac des Martres, étape de l'étude géologique de la region de Charlevoix.On distingue quatre groupes métasédimentaires, tons con tenant des niveaux de quartzite dans an mains deux domaines géologique différents, c'est à l'ouest, clans le do¬maine gneisso-charnockitique que se situent les quartzites du groupe des Martres. Quartzite et gneiss à, grenat et sillimanite, en banes épais, constituent la formation de La Galette. A Pest, dans un environnement gneisso-granitique, les deux groupes métasédimentaires de Saint-Siméon, et de La Malbaie comprennent, par contraste, des bancs pen épais et de compositions variées. Les niveaux de quartzite dépassent rarement 50 m d'épaisseur. L'autre groupe métasédimentaires, celui de Saint-Tite des Caps, recoupé de nombreuses intrusions charnockitiques et granitiques, ne possède que de minces niveaux de quartzite.La pureté et la grande épaisseur des quartzites de La Galette suppose une histoire complexe qui se termine par des depots continentaux de climat aride, par opposition aux depots marins des autres groupes. D'autre part, la presence de ces quartzites an sein de roches Presque anhy¬dres et de haute temperature que sont les charnockites leur confére des caractéristiques de fusion sans decrepitation.Parmi la multitude de depots de quartzite qui existe clans le monde, peu sont de qualité supérieure. Or, de par sa composition chimique, le quartzite de La Galette se compare avantageusement à ceux des meilleurs gisements des Etats-Unis, de l'Europe de l'Ouest et de l'Afrique du Sud. D'accès facile pour l'exploitation, les gisements ne sont qu'à une trentaine de milles de Baie Saint-Paul ou de La Malbaie, sur le Saint-Laurent.L'utilisation en metallurgic prévue pour le quartzite de La Galette comprend la production de silicium, de ferro¬silicium et d'autres alliages de silicium. La composition du quartzite est en outre appropriée pour la production de carbure de silicium et de silicate de sodium. Les fines peuvent être utilisées pour la fabrication du verre et comme matiere de charge"
