This study compiles data on the zircon resources of the Pacific Northwest States, Alaska, and California, to determine the productive capability of industrial concerns to make ductile zirconium and hafnium, and to investigate markets for the nonmetallic products of zircon. West coast zircon resources are large but mostly marginal to submarginal. Development of a stable and profitable zircon mining industry on the west coast will depend upon recovery and utilization of the other associated heavy minerals needed by regional and national markets. The west coast has the only completely integrated facility for processing zircon sand to reactor-grade zirconium and hafnium and for making fabricated products from these metals. The future of the zirconium metal industry appears to be good because of increased use of the metal for nuclear propulsion and power-generating plants.

"A qualitative and quantitative analysis of the new Al-Ca-Mn-Fe phase diagram in the region of the aluminium corner is carried out using both thermodynamic calculations and experimental methods. Using the obtained data, the principal possibility of creating both cast and wrought sparingly alloyed aluminium alloys with calcium, manganese, scandium and zirconium at allowable iron contents of up to 0.4% that do not require solution treatment and quenching is justified. At the selected concentrations, the entire amount of manganese (1%) is practically included in the aluminium matrix, while calcium (~2%) and iron are in the multiphase eutectic, which has a fine structure. The joint introduction of 0.25% Zr and 0.1% Sc into the alloy leads to precipitation hardening due to the formation of the L12-Al3(Zr,Sc) phase during annealing. Based on the experimental data for the model multicomponent Al2CaMnFeZrSc alloy, it is shown that such alloys can combine high mechanical properties and good manufacturability during both casting and metal forming. This is due to the combination of a narrow temperature range of solidification with a fine eutectic structure.INTRODUCTION Hardening in branded aluminium alloys (both cast and wrought) is generally achieved by heat treatment of the T6 type, including quenching and artificial aging (Zolotorevskiy, 2007; Kaufman, 2004; Mondolfo, 1976). Heat treatment significantly increases the cost of the final products. Therefore, industrial companies are interested in developing alloys that can be hardened to the desired level without quenching. To solve this problem, alloys with scandium are the most suitable (Toropova, 1998; RØyset, 2005). This element (usually in an amount of ~0.3%) is one of the most effective hardeners in aluminium alloys, due to the formation of Al3Sc (L12) phase secondary precipitates, the size of which is less than 10 nm (Knipling, 2010; Fuller, 2005). These nanoparticles are formed during the annealing via decomposition of the supersaturated aluminium solid solution (hereinafter referred to as (Al)). This feature allows us to significantly increase the strength of aluminium alloys by simple annealing (at ~300°C), i.e., without heat treatment, including quenching. However, scandium is a very expensive metal, so its use as an additive is severely limited. The most effective method is the introduction of scandium together with zirconium (Lefebvre, 2009; Booth-Morrison, 2012). The optimal combination is the introduction of ~0.1% Sc together with 0.20–0.25% Zr, which, according to (Belov, 2006), gives approximately the same strengthening effect as the introduction of 0.3% Sc."

The Oso tunnel is one of three tunnels located on the San Juan-Chama Project in south-central Colorado. The purpose of the tunnel is to carry water from the upper San Juan watershed through the Continental Divide into the Rio Grande watershed. The Oso tunnel contract was awarded by the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation to a joint venture of Boyles Brothers Drilling Co., Gibbons & Reed Co., and Cimco in February 1966. The Oso tunnel is 26,660 ft long and has a rock section of 10 ft, 2 in. with a lined diameter of 8 ft circular. The main portion of the rock formation was in the Lewis shale. This formation is quite consistent in hardness and texture with exception of localized limestone concretions and sandy siltstone inclusions. The job was bid on the basis of using a James S. Robbins mole of the P221 series. The decision for using a mole was predicated on the geology and the experience of the same joint venture on the adjoining Azotea tunnel where a mole was successfully used. The Robbins P221 series mole is capable of cutting from 9 ft, 11 in. to a 10 ft, 7 in. diam without any major change. It is 40 ft long and weighs 60 tons. The cutting head has 22 disk-type cutters and one center pilot (standard 9 7/8 -in.) tricone bit. The head is powered by four 75 hp electric motors. Gripper pads at about the midway point on each side of the machine are pushed into the tunnel ribs and thrust-cylinders in front of each gripper apply pressure to the face as the head rotates. The regripping cycle is 3 ft and then the grippers are retracted and advanced. Each cutter on the perimeter of the head is followed by a bucket which scoops up the cut material, almost in the same manner as a water wheel, and dumps it into a conveyor situated along the top of the mole. During the past five years under contract with the U. S. Bureau of Mines (BOM Contract J0308002). West Virginia University's Mining Extension Service (WVU-MES) has designed, developed) and delivered to the mining industry a comprehensive training program for Mine Rescue (MR) teams and a management planning tool for Mine Emergency Preparedness. The Mine Rescue team program is systematically built on a set of training objectives, backed up by content, allowing mine operators to conduct team training activities. These materials are user-ready, provide the MR principles and practices for both initial and advanced training, and supply teams with exercises geared to problem-solving activities. In addition to an instructor's program guide, the eight (8) modules that comprise the initial (20 hour) MR training are: an Introduction to Mine Rescue, an Introduction to Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA), a set of modules covering each approved minimum 2-hour SCBA (i.e.) the Draeger BO 174-A. the McCaa) the Aerolox. & the Scott Rescue-Pak), and a manual on Auxiliary Apparatus as well as the Chemox Auxiliary SCBA. Advanced, annual refresher training (40 hour) is covered by seven (7) modules that spell-out the principles and practices needed to establish surface organization, to handle mine gases as well as mine ventilation, to conduct exploration, for fires, firefighting, and explosions, to rescue survivors and recover bodies, and to accomplish a mine recovery. Approved by MSHA in 1984 to meet requirements for 30 CFO. Part 49, these materials provide a basis for trainers' instruction, for comparison of team capabilities, for modifying programs resources, and services, and for program planning. The Mine Emergency Preparedness Program (MEPP) is used by management as a tool in the preparation of company personnel for handling a mine emergency operation. As a wholly new program. MEPP depends upon development of a Mine Emergency Organization and Emergency Operations Procedures. It also requires regular scheduling of drills) periodic mock emergencies, and evaluation of organizational responses and program performance beyond required training of mine rescue teams. MEPP materials are arranged into three sets of guides: 1) the Preparedness Program System Guides include an Executive Summary, a Program Director's Guide Mine Emergency Organization, and Emergency Operations Procedures; 2) the Emergency Organization (MEO) User's Guides cover the Rescue and Advisory Division, the Technical/Safeguarding Division, and the Surface Support Division; and 3) the Emergency Procedures (EOPS) User's Guides detail Containment Level Procedures, Notification Level Procedures. Mobilization Level Procedures, and Deployment Level Procedures.

Standard petrographic profiles for many Permian seams from New South Wales and Queensland have been drawn up. The standard profiles of seams of the same age and from one or more coalfields were used to compile an idealized or type seam sequence for those coals in which more than half the seam profiles were similar to one another. The aim of the project was to experimentally determine the coefficient of restitution, and static and rolling friction of Eskom-grade coal for discrete element modelling (DEM). These parameters will be used in further DEM studies to simulate the flow and behaviour of coal during conveyance. For the simulation to yield realistic results, the parameters for the different coal shapes identified in the samples were determined. DEM uses spherical particles, and it was found that the difference between the DEM default parameters and those measured is significantly different, by as much as 97%, which illustrates the importance of experimentally determining these parameters. The spherical particles in DEM can be used to construct the various coal shapes identified, and the parameters measured can be used to simulate realistic results. The conveyance system can then be optimized accordingly.

It is commonly accepted that the tension of roof bolts can be used as a measure of the effectiveness of roof support performance in coal bearing strata. The conceptual base for the assumption originates from beam theory. Roof bolt tension acting across the bedding and other weakness planes increases friction, preventing potential separation and slippage within the roof strata and therefore, increases the stiffness of the roof beam between the open face and the rock-mass enclosed within the anchorage. Thus, it is important to monitor roof bolt tension, especially for research purposes, and consequently many measuring systems were developed based on numerous working principles. Research planned by the Department of Mining Engineering at the University of Kentucky required a large number of tension measuring devices of high precision. These were intended to operate reliably in corrosive mine environment over long periods of time. After evaluating the existing systems, it was decided to develop a new type of roof bolt dynamometer which would fulfill the above requirements at minimal Cost. Nearly one hundred such dynamometers were constructed, calibrated and installed in two underground mines. They remained in service for a period of one Year, producing a valuable database for the Project. In this paper the working principle of this new type of dynamometer will be described and technical considerations and samples of the collected data will be given.

"The advantages of using Nb and Ti-Nb coatings for improving the hardness and corrosion resistance of Ti6Al4V were investigated. It has been reported that Ti6Al4V used in orthopaedic implants tends to release toxic Al and V ions into the surrounding tissue. Thin layers of Nb and Ti-Nb were deposited on Ti6Al4V substrates using a laser metal deposition technique. The deposited material was analysed using optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy coupled with energy dispersive spectroscopy, and X-ray diffraction. The corrosion behaviour of the deposited layers was investigated using a Metrohm Autolab PG Stat101 compact potentiostat at 25°C in simulated body fluid. A Vickers hardness system was used to study the mechanical properties. Both Nb and Ti-Nb coatings exhibited good metallurgical bonding with the substrate. The microstructure and the XRD analyses for the Nb system showed that the ??-Nb phase was most dominant, while the Ti-Nb system comprised a mixture of the ?? and ?? phases. The average hardness of the Ti6Al4V substrate was 350 HV0.3, with a slight increase for the Nb coating (363 HV0.3) and a much higher hardness from the Ti-Nb coating at 423 HV0.3. The corrosion results show that the deposited Nb was more corrosion-resistant in the solution than either the Ti6Al4V substrate or the Ti-Nb coating. IntroductionMetals such as CoCrMo, 316L stainless steel, and NiTi alloy are used for manufacturing biomedical implants because of their distinct properties, including low Young’s modulus and resistance to corrosion (Ryan, Pandit, and Apatsidis, 2006). These implants are required to remain in the body of the patient for many years. Due to a favourable combination of mechanical and corrosion properties, titanium (Ti) and its alloys have emerged as the material of choice for biomedical implants. Nevertheless, their use is not entirely without challenges. For example, in total hip replacement, surface degradation and release of metal debris from metal erosion caused by friction limit the service life of the implant (Oldani and Dominguez, 2012; Manivasagam, Dhinasekaran, and Rajamanickam, 2010). Ti6Al4V is generally regarded as the material of choice, but it has been found that over extended periods of time, the combination of surface corrosion and erosion releases toxic aluminium (Al) and vanadium (V) ions into the body (Khan, Williams, and Williams, 1996). This has led to the investigation of titanium alloys containing niobium (Nb), zirconium (Zr), tantalum (Ta), and molybdenum (Mo) as substitutes for the aluminium- and vanadium-containing Ti6Al4V (Okazaki et al., 1997)."

Abstract. This paper puts forward the concept of 'radial' plant layout where all crushing, milling and treatment operations are preferably concentrated in one central area and these separate stages are connected by radiating conveyors to and from outside storage areas. This system is contrasted to the more customary system of 'linear' plant layout where the crushing, milling and often the treatment operations follow one after the other in separate buildings. The radial system simplifies and improves contral and supervision to a very considerable extent and can lead to a form of continuous plant operation with the separate sectors shutting down in succession for necessary maintenance while maintaining the overall plant operation. The paper is illustrated with example: from past and recent diamond treatment plant practice in South Africa which demonstrate the reduction in plant labour achieved by this system. Previous objection to this type of layout on the grounds that it inhibited plant expansion are shown to be unwarranted. Radial Layout for Increased Treatment Plant Productivity A great deal of time and trouble is spent by highly qualified and experience( metallurgists in developing the right treatment process for a given ore. This process is then often expressed in a treatment flowsheet of the type shown in Fig. 1 which shows a typical diamond plant. This flowsheet, when completed, is commonly handed over to the mechanical engineers who then design the layout of the equipment indicated on the flowsheet and produce the working drawings upon which the detailed construction of the treatment plant will be based. It is an unfortunate fact that the tedious and time-consuming juggling of equipment and inter-plant transportation is often left to hard-working draughtsmen who, however capable' in their field, lack practical experience in the day-to-day operation and maintenance of the treatment plants they design. As a result many plants have been produced which, while they satisfy the requirements of the flowsheet with minimum capital requirements, cost far more than should be necessary to op¬erate and maintain. It is often possible to change individual items of equipment which do not achieve the performance required of them, but it is usually extremely expensive to change the basic layout of the plant if this should be found to be unsatisfactory. It should therefore be recognised that great care and attention should be spent on consideration of the basic layout of any treatment plant and that the views of both designers and operators should be fully regarded before settling upon the inevitable compromise dictated by the varying requirements of process-engineering and economics. It is unfortunate that this important subject receives such scant regard in the standard ore dressing text books and hand-books, being usually dismissed in a few paragraphs.

A LACK of experimental data illustrating the effect of composition, particularly in respect to impurities, on the mechanical properties and corrosion resistance of aluminum-alloy die castings induced the authors and their associates to undertake a limited study of these relations. A number of commercial alloys and several experimental variations of a commercial alloy were used for the investigation. Mechanical property, growth, steam, paraffin, salt spray and atmospheric exposure tests were employed. This paper deals with the more accelerated tests and the results they have produced. It is concluded that a high-silicon alloy with all impurities except iron strictly limited to small amounts will develop an excellent resistance to corrosion and retain satisfactory mechanical properties and casting characteristics. As a direct result of this investigation an alloy of this character with superior corrosion resistance is now available commercially. In general, copper increases the strength and decreases the elongation and corrosion resistance. Tin reduces the mechanical properties and the resistance to corrosion. Iron reduces the elongation and, if excessively high, may adversely affect the tensile strength. Even excessively high iron contents do not affect the corrosion resistance, which is fortunate for the die caster as it is this element that is the most difficult to control. Nickel and zinc in limited amounts do not seem to affect the properties or corrosion resistance of at least the high-silicon alloy. Growth tests have confirmed the previous common belief that dimensional changes under either dry or wet conditions at 100° C. are too small to be of practical importance.

Paper written on project work carried out in partial fulfilment of MSc (Eng) degree Solid state sintered silicon carbide ceramics are used in aggressive environments as sealings. There exist data concerning corrosion, but there are only few data concerning their electrocorrosion behaviour. Therefore the electrochemical corrosion of solid state sintered silicon carbide (SSiC) ceramics has been studied at room temperature in acidic and alkaline environments by using potentiodynamic polarization measurements. The investigation showed a pronounced electrochemical corrosion in bases and acids. In HCl andHNO3pseudo-passivity features due to the formation of a thin layer of SiO2on the surface were observed, whereas in NaOH soluble silicate ions were observed, resulting in more pronounced corrosion. The microstructural observations of initial and corroded samples reveal that the residual carbon found in the microstructure do not dissolve preferentially. The Gilt Edge Superfund Site is a former heap-leach gold mine that currently is being remediated in the Black Hills of South Dakota. Mine runoff water is treated before release from the site. The field pH, before treatment, is about 3, and the water contains arsenic and some heavy metals, in addition to sulfate concentrations of about 1400 to 1500 mg/L. In the Keystone area of the Black Hills, naturally occurring arsenic has been detected in ground-water samples from wells. Keystone City Well #4, which is not used currently, showed arsenic concentrations of 36 parts per billion (ppb) and sulfate concentrations of about 19 mg/L. With field samples of water from these sites, a limestone-based method was successful in reducing arsenic and heavy metals concentrations. The results are significant because previous research with the limestone-based method mainly had involved samples prepared with distilled water in the laboratory, in which interference of other ions such as sulfate did not occur. The research indicates the potential for broader field applications of the limestone-based removal method.

IT was just five minutes past midnight, on Wednesday, Jan. 5, 1938, that Mrs. Cosgrove and I sailed from New York City. Our trip was to completely circle the globe, to cover over 40,000 miles and stop at thirty ports-from New York to Trinidad, to South America, via South Africa to the Orient, to India, to the Malay States, to Indo-China, the Philippines, Australia, New Zealand, Fiji, and across the Pacific home via Honolulu. It is not my intention to make this a complete, technical study of coal or coal mining in the various countries that .we visited but more to outline the general in- formation that the mining engineer and coal operator would absorb in his travels. Coal is the universal fuel and is in use wherever there is commerce and industry. Even on our ship, which, like practically all ocean liners was an oil-burner, a considerable quantity of coal was used for cooking.

Several underground coal mines currently operating in the Beckley District of West Virginia are experiencing serious roof and floor problems. A significant portion of the estimated two billion tons of coal resources may be lost as a result of these ground control problems. Preliminary studies by the Bureau of Mines indicated that these problems are due in part to a high horizontal stress field. During this contract study, a field program was conducted to quantify the horizontal in situ stress. A total of 14 overcoring sites (using the Bureau of Mines strain-relief overcoring technique) in five mines were drilled producing 53 data sets. Analysis of the data was done to provide in situ horizontal stresses for each of the five mine, and for the district as a whole. Stress data indicate horizontal stresses far in excess of that predicted by theory and in some cases, up to six times the estimated vertical stress. In addition to the field testing, a detailed computer modeling study was conducted using finite element and boundary integral (displacement discontinuity) methods. Verification of in situ stresses was obtained by the models and analysis of various development geometries, mining methods and remedial techniques were conducted. Recommendations for reducing ground control problems and future studies are presented.

"IntroductionTHE PURPOSE of this paper is to give a •brief history of iron and steel in British Columbia, a quick look at the present operations of Western Canada Steel, Limited, a review of iron ore resources and iron and steel markets, and a projection of what the future might hold for the industry in British Columbia.From the Past to the PresentWhile the paper is entitled Past, Present, and Future, in covering the past, which we shall call the time prior to 1947, there is very little to be said. Small shipments of iron ore were made from the Texada deposits by the Puget Sound Iron Company from 1886 to 1907. Total ore shipped did not exceed 70,000 tons. Part of this is believed to have been used in building a United States battleship in 1907 in the Bremerton Naval Yards in Seattle, Washington.In 1914 a small steel mill was started on Lulu island, rolling bars from •box piles and used shafting. This mill operated spasmodically for a few years but finally burned down in 1921. The rolling mill stands were sold to China and are no doubt in operation in China today.In 1916 the City of Port Moody assisted in the financing of a mill which operated on re-roll rails, box piles, and steel ingots made in an experimental electric furnace in Port Moody. This furnace also produced small quantities of pig iron scrap. The backers of the Port Moody mill showed a great deal of enterprise and must have been a very forward looking group, since this was one of the first recorded applications of the electric furnace to small ingot production. Despite their enterprise, the operation was unsuccessful and terminated in 1921."

The Functional Performance Equation for ball milling circuits provides plant staff with a new means to improve circuit performance. However, successful execution of a plant project, with verifiable circuit processing performance improvements, requires a significant number of accompanying steps beyond the equation alone. In order to identify and articulate all these steps, a study with plant staff from two milling operations and a grinding media supplier was undertaken. ?Task analysis? of improving plant grinding performance was carried out. This analysis called for the development of a number of system components, and ultimately yielded a ?Plant Grinding Circuit Processing Performance Management/Improvement System.?

"The Strathcona Concentrator operations, the application of control systems in the crushing, flotation and tailing fill sections, and current and future computer control concepts are described in this paper.The computer has been used for reporting and monitoring roles and operating the on-stream analyzer since start up of the mill in 1968, while over the past twenty months, it has been used for process control. The systems which have been developed include:1. The blending of pentlandite concentrate with pyrrhotite concentrate to produce a special product of constant nickel analysis.2. The blending of cement with tailing fill to produce backfill of consistent cement content.3. The supervisory control of xanthate, frother and pH to the flotation circuits to maintain the nickel copper concentrate grade within narrow limits.IntroductionThe Strathcona Concentrator is currently treating 7,200 tons per day of an ore which contains nickel associated with the minerals pentlandite (28 -32% Ni) and pyrrhotite (0.3 -1.0% Ni). The ratio of the nickel minerals varies from 4 to 15 parts of pyrrhotite to 1 part of pentlandite over the orebody. The production of a high grade concentrate re4uires the separation of this small quantity of .oentlandite from the much greater proportion of pyrrhotite and gangue and is complicated by the presence of two pyrrhotite minerals differing in nickel content, floatability and magnetic susceptibility."

This regional report covers 1993 mining and related activity in approximately 40 countries and territories of Canada, Latin America, and the Caribbean Basin. These countries of the Western Hemisphere, as with the United States, are endowed with a great variety of minerals, including metals, industrial minerals, and energy minerals. For most of these countries, such mineral production helps form foundations for their economies and earns export credits including hard currencies. Table 1 depicts an overall view of Latin America and Canada's production of its major mineral commodities in 1993; subsequent tables show the role of Latin America and Canada in world mineral production, trade, and import dependency on minerals from Latin America and Canada by the United States. Overall, the picture emerges of a rich mineral diversity throughout the hemisphere, attracting increasing interest and investment, and complementing the mineral resources of the United States.

The No. 10 metro line of Shanghai city is 36 kilometers in length and will pass through the operating airport runway by using tunnel boring machine with earth pres-sure balance mode. Although there are examples through world that tunnels pass through airport runway and tunnelling underground is not a difficult undertaking technically, there is rare experience in China for the similar projects especially in Shanghai saturated soft soil region. Shanghai soft earth is famous for its high compressibility, high rate of water content, weakness in strength, large deformation and different characteristics in earth strata. Besides, the whole construction process will be under ultra-large airplane dynamic load on the surface ground over the tunnel, which increases the risks of construction process. This paper evaluates the feasibility of building the metro tunnel under such an extremely serious condition, especially the subsidence of ground surface caused by advancing of tunnel boring machine, which also is the most important control target for the safe operating of the runway. Furthermore, this paper discusses the effective measures to keep the settlements in the permissible level during the whole working period for the tunnel from aspects of plan, design and construction.

Primary, low-temperature tars are generally known to alter with time. The effect is believed to occur, in some instances, without the external influence of air, light, or heat. Since one of the processes occurring during extended storage is oxidation, the action of mild oxidation induced by air and heat, in addition to the effect of storage, was studied. The principal effect in aging and oxidation is formation of pitch at the expense of the distillate fraction. The fraction boiling above 270° C. is mainly involved in pitch formation due to storage, whereas all fractions are affected to some degree when tar is heated at 125° C. in the presence of air. If the effects of air are considered, the aromatic and tar-acid fractions seem to be important in pitch formation.
