Geometallurgical modeling of the production benches is an attempt to estimate the geometallurgical variables of the different ore domains, which leads to a better understanding of the ore and its properties. Having geometallurgical variables results in a more accurate prediction of ore characteristics, an improved drilling and blasting operation, and better efficiency of the processing plant. In this research, the geometallurgical variables required for the geometallurgical modeling of the extraction benches are discussed. Then, the relations between Bond work index (BWi), as one of the most important geometallurgical variables and the primary grindability index, and rock geomechanical properties are investigated based on the previously published studies. The BWi is the main parameter for measuring the resistance to the grinding of ore minerals. It represents the energy required for processing (e.g., crushing, grinding) ore rocks in the beneficiation plant. As a real case study, BWi of a production bench in Sungun Copper Mine, located in East Azarbaijan province, Iran, was estimated. The rock’s geomechanical properties were measured using laboratory tests, including uniaxial compressive strength, Brazilian tensile strength, point load strength, and hardness. Then, BWi was estimated using the proposed formulas in the literature and the results of the rock’s geomechanical properties. The selected bench consists of three ore zones and two dyke domains. The laboratory tests revealed that the first ore zone has a slightly higher compressive strength than the other two zones, while the compressive strength of the waste rocks is larger than the ore domains. Using the proposed equations in the literature, the predicted values of the BWi for the samples in ore zones are in the range of 6.36 – 14.44 (kWh/t), and therefore this wide range must be considered when the short-term production schedule is planned. In addition, variations are observed in the samples within a specific zone and between the ore zones, demonstrating heterogeneity in the selected bench. Finally, wide-open results obtained by different equations show a necessity to perform a geometallurgical program specifically for the Sungun mine.

This paper presents a review of several models of roadheaders being used in today?s tunnel projects. The features of different models of roadheaders are presented and compared. Roadheader size and cutter power generally determine which roadheader is best for a particular job. We will also present a model for matching features of the roadheader to the anticipated ground conditions such that the most efficient machine is selected for the project.

This paper presents the results of large-scale fire experiments on evaluating the performances of carbon monoxide (CO) and smoke sensors at low ventilation velocities. Experiments using three different combustibles — conveyor belt, coal and diesel fuel — were conducted in the experimental mine at the U.S. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) Bruceton Research Facility. A total of eight sensor stations were located downstream of the fire with each station containing sensors for CO, smoke, carbon dioxide (CO2 ), oxygen (O2 ), humidity, barometric pressure and temperature, as well as two airflow sensors. The airflow velocity ranged from 0.22 to 0.26 m/s (44 to 51 fpm) in the tests. The response times were recorded for the CO and smoke sensors at each sensor station when smoke and gaseous products of combustion from each burning combustible reached the station. The response times of the CO sensors were used to determine the appropriate sensor spacing in the belt entry with a low air velocity. The performance of the smoke sensor was found to be affected by the high humidity in the experiments. The results on proper selection of sensors and the determination of sensor spacing at a low ventilation velocity can be helpful for ensuring sufficient early fire warning for underground workers, thereby improving the health and safety of miners.

Conventional barrier pillars in underground coal mines are intended to protect mains and sub-main entries for relatively long periods of time. Inter-panel barrier pillars that may be used in especially deep coal mines, say, below 800 m (2,400 ft), are intended to protect longwall panel faces and adjacent panel entries for the life of nearby panels. Barrier pillar failures have serious consequences, especially when failure is sudden and catastrophic. Design of barrier pillars is thus of considerable importance to safety and efficiency of operations. Locally, failure occurs at the limit to elasticity when stress tends to exceed strength. Strength of rock is stress dependent, so an analysis of stress is central to rational design of barrier pillars. There are several approaches to stress analysis for coal mine pillar design that range from the simplified but popular tributary area method including variations that use empirical definitions of the tributary area (volume) to more sophisticated numerical methods such as the boundary element method and the finite element method. Despite ease of use, empirical methods are limited and always suspect when applied to conditions beyond their scope of definition, while boundary element methods do not generally include pillars in the solution domain. The finite element method is not so restricted and thus is a natural choice for conventional and inter-panel barrier pillar safety analyses. Caving of roof strata certainly affects the distribution of stress about longwall faces and nearby barrier pillars. Conventional wisdom that considers roof strata to respond as cantilever beams indicates the longer the span the greater are loads on longwall faces and face supports. Failure of roof beams, caving, shortens spans and relieves face and support loads. The same view is applicable to barrier pillars in that long roof spans outside of barrier pillars leads to higher pillar loads than short spans. Hence, caving should be beneficial to barrier pillar safety. However, the benefit may be small depending on the extent of caving and only in the form of a slight reduction in overburden weight transmitted to the barrier pillar, especially in case of inter-panel barrier pillars. FINITE ELEMENT MODEL Finite element models for stress analysis in rock mechanics are formulated in consideration of physical laws, kinematics, and material laws. These models meet the essential requirements for equilibrium of stress, satisfy strain displacements relations, and in a general sense, relate stress to strain through material laws, often referred to as constitutive relations. The last may be complex and replete with nonlinearities. A de facto engineering material law is the elastic model in the form of Hooke?s law for linear, homogeneous materials that may be anisotropic. A limit to elasticity is imposed by strength in the form of a failure criterion or yield function that accommodates triaxial stress states. Examples used in rock mechanics are the well-known Mohr-Coulomb (MC)criterion, the popular Hoek-Brown (HB) criterion, and the Drucker-Prager (DP) criterion. The first is linear in stress, while the second is nonlinear. Both do not include any effect of the intermediate principal stress. The last is also linear in stress but includes the intermediate principal stress. All show an increase in the major principal stress at failure with confining pressure. In the UT2/3 finite element programs, the failure criterion Y is a nonlinear, anisotropic form and is also the plastic potential [1]: [YJI=+ 11NYJI=+- (1) ] where N is an exponent, usually 2, and J2 and I1 are nonlinear anisotropic forms of the second invariant of deviatoric stress and the first invariant of principal stress. The form (1) reduces to DP when N=1and isotropy prevails. When Y = 1, the limit to elasticity is reached and plastic deformation is possible. The material constants that enter (1) are all computed from unconfined compressive, tensile, and, in case of anisotropy, shear strengths. These latter strengths may be estimated from conventional laboratory test data. Of course, joints in field-scale rock masses induce different values. How different is often a matter of conjecture. For comparative studies, laboratory rock properties seem adequate. Inelastic, that is, plastic behavior occurs with strain beyond the elastic limit. Strain hardening, ideal plasticity, and strain softening are possibilities. Ideally brittle behavior with complete loss of strength is an extreme form of strain softening [2]. Caving may also be considered as strain softening with a less drastic reduction of material properties. As intact roof strata fail, fall, and form a rubble pile below, a new material is formed with greatly reduced elastic moduli and strengths, say, 1/100th of the original intact moduli and strengths. From another viewpoint, caving is simply a natural cut and fill process. Input for stress analysis by the finite element method includes: 1. Preexcavation stress state 2. Geology (stratigraphic column) 3. Structure (major faults, joint sets) 4. Elastic moduli 5. Strengths, and specific gravities of each rock type 6. Excavation sequence Output from an analysis includes distributions of: 1. Stress 2. Strain 3. Displacement 4. Local factor of safety (element fs) The last is defined as the ratio of strength to stress and in view of the failure criterion (1), is the ratio [fsJstrengthJstress=] where the numerator is the maximum possible value and the denominator is the actual value of the square root of the second invariant of deviatoric stress. This invariant is a measure of shear stress intensity but also reduces to uniaxial tensile and compressive strengths as the case may be. One of the main objectives of this study was to evaluate a fine-coal cleaning circuit using an enhanced gravity separator specifically for a high sulfur coal application. The evaluation not only included testing of individual unit operations used for fine-coal classification, cleaning and dewatering, but also included testing of the complete circuit simultaneously. At a scale of nearly 2 t/h, two alternative circuits were evaluated to clean a minus 0.6-mm coal stream utilizing a 150-mm-diameter classifying cyclone, a linear screen having a projected surface area of 0.5 m2, an enhanced gravity separator having a bowl diameter of 250 mm and a screen-bowl centrifuge having a bowl diameter of 500 mm. The cleaning and dewatering components of both circuits were the same; however, one circuit used a classifying cyclone whereas the other used a linear screen as the classification device. An industrial size coal spiral was used to clean the 2- x 0.6-mm coal size fraction for each circuit to estimate the performance of a complete fine-coal circuit cleaning a minus 2-mm particle size coal stream. The ?linear screen + enhanced gravity separator + screen-bowl circuit? provided superior sulfur and ash-cleaning performance to the alternative circuit that used a classifying cyclone in place of the linear screen. Based on these test data, it was estimated that the use of the recommended circuit to treat 50 t/h of minus 2-mm size coal having feed ash and sulfur contents of 33.9% and 3.28%, respectively, may produce nearly 28.3 t/h of clean coal with product ash and sulfur contents of 9.15% and 1.61%, respectively.

The calculation of the dose to the bronchial epithelium, lungs and other body tissues from exposures to airborne radon and thoron daughters requires a knowledge of the pattern of deposition in the respiratory system and clearance from it. Exposure to radon or thoron daughters is measured in units of Working Level Months (WLM), which is independent of the aerosol particle size, the fraction of daughters that are attached to the aerosol and the degree of disequilibria between the daughters, and age and breathing rate of the subject. These factors will influence the deposition and clearance, and hence dose. It is therefore of interest to find the relationship between WLM and calculated dose as a function of aerosol size, unattached fraction, and disequilibria, and of age and breathing rate, and to define ranges for these parameters for which WLM is an acceptable measure of the risk. This presentation briefly reviews the two dosimetry models being considered by a current Nuclear Energy Agency (OECD) Working Group, and using these models, defines limits on parameters for which the WLM is applicable.

All ores have an economic optimum particle size (Wills and Napier-Munn, 2006). This optimum value is often a compromise between the need to achieve adequate liberation for the efficient separation and recovery of valuable minerals and the energy consumed by the crushing and grinding process. It has been recognized for nearly three decades that grinding is the most expensive and least efficient stage in mineral processing (El-shall and Somasundaran, 1984). At that time it was estimated that grinding consumed between 25 and 70% of the total power required in mineral processing. This recognition drove the development of new stirred mill fine grinding technology in the 1990s (Jankovic et.al, 2003; Enderle et. al., 1997; Massey, 2008). These milling technologies have a reduced energy consumption compared to traditional fine grinding using ball mills. In the ?coarser? fine grinding applications this improvement is approximately 30%. The benefits increase to above 50% in ultrafine grinding applications (Lichter and Davey, 2006). Despite these gains, the US Department of Energy reported that an additional energy savings of up to 37% is possible in the minerals industry. They identified continuing research and development and implementing best practices in both grinding and materials handling as the primary avenues for the additional reduction (BCS, 2007).

"Shallow-depth (<200m) high temperature submarine hydrothermal systems are not commonly observed on mid-ocean ridge settings, as most known systems are located within arc - island-arc volcanic settings, often proximal to coastal areas (meteoric waters added). In 2013, during the Centre for Geobiology’s 2013 oceanographic cruise (R/V G.O. Sars), a dredge successfully sampled massive sulfides and hydrothermally altered rocks from the top of a volcanic edifice (~144-284 m depth) located on the northern sector of the Kolbeinsey Ridge. Dredged samples include vesicular altered basalts, and matrix supported anhydrite, barite and barite-pyrite-anhydrite volcaniclastic breccias. Sulfidesulfate breccias depict complex zoning where numerous small vent orifices are distributed with large blades of marcasite that appear intergrown with barite. Native sulfur was observed in one of these small vent orifices. On a microscopic scale, numerous spherical silica-rich structures appear associated to these breccias. These rocks are evidence for the presence of a relatively high temperature (minimum 150ºC) shallow-water seafloor hydrothermal system in the Arctic mid-ocean ridge, far from mainland influence. This new discovery presents a unique opportunity to study the dynamics of fluid chemistry, metal mobility and precipitation in shallow hydrothermal systems. The remote location of this system dictates that fluid recharge will be influenced solely by seawater and magmatic fluids, In July-August 2014 we expect to survey this new field and acquire new and comprehensive data."

Everybody has an opinion what the quality of a grinding mill head casting should be, yet extremely few take the time, or get the opportunity, to compare their opinions against fitness-for-purpose data. The real question is not how flawless the casting should/could be, but rather how long will ?this? casting survive in operation. To validate an opinion on this topic one needs either extensive historical data, or comprehensive experimental data, or preferably, a combination of both. The same data can also be used to establish the conservativeness, or lack thereof, of analytical prediction methods.

Enhanced gravity separation appears to be one of the most promising methods for processing all types of <200-µm coal feeds and tailings. Systems based on this technology are reviewed, and the results of investigations based on C900 Multi-Gravity Separator tests conducted to assess the treatment of <200-µm, extremely difficult-to-wash coal settling pond tailings are presented. Multi-Gravity Separator processing tests of ultra-fine tailings with a high clay particle size content (22.6% <10 µm and 60.1% <40 µm) and a 69.56% ash content show that this material can be effectively treated after desliming (<10 µm) of clay-size particles to produce a coal with a 20.6% ash at a separator combustible material recovery of 69.3%. Desliming is shown to be critical in reducing coal ash content and combustible material recovery. Similar improvements are anticipated in the recovery and separation pro-cesses for other enhanced gravity separation systems from the desliming of feeds. Although not a conventional form of treating Multi-Gravity Separator data, the existence of well-defined polynomial relationships based on the product of drum shake amplitude and shake frequency relative to product coal recovery, product ash content and yields at varying wash water flows is demonstrated. Low-amplitude and intermediate- to high-frequency bed agitation are shown to produce optimum ash reduction results.

Gangue-cemented paste backfill (GCPB), is a well-established green mining technology and significantly improves the recovery rate of mineral resources, prevents mine dynamic disasters, reduces surface subsidence, and consumes a considerable amount of solid waste. The addition of an early strength agent as an additive in cement-based materials provides several security, technical, and economic advantages. In this study, the early strength agent on the early age (3, 7 and 28 days) strength of GCPB is evaluated experimentally. The GCPB specimens have an initial sodium sulfate early strength agent concentration of 0%, 1%, 2%, 3%, and 4%, and the obtained samples were analyzed by testing for uniaxial compressive strength (UCS) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The test results show that the UCS of the GCPB specimens with sodium sulfate is much higher than that of the blank specimens. When cured for 3 days and 7 days, the strength of GCPB with 2% sodium sulfate increased the most, by 131% and 116% respectively. When cured for 28 days, the strength of GCPB with 1% sodium sulfate increased by 135%. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) results showed that the GCPB with 1% and 2% sodium sulfate had better internal structure compactness, thicker acicular crystals, and more flocs. As a kind of early strength agent, sodium sulfate can react with calcium hydroxide to generate calcium dihydrate sulfate and then react with calcium aluminate; the hydration product (C3A) quickly generates calcium sulfoaluminate hydrate (AFt) needle-shaped crystals, forming an early skeleton and improving the early strength.

Increasing pressure from State and Federal agencies to mitigate mining-induced subsidence damage to overlying structures has presented a unique problem to the coal industry in the western United States. Because sandstone escarpments are an environmental issue, millions of tons of coal reserves that underlie these escarpments risk being classified as unminable by regulatory agencies. At this time, the effect of subsidence on escarpments has not been well documented or characterized. The Bureau of Mines is using numerical modeling techniques to analyze escarpment response to longwall mining. Two- and three-dimensional finite element models have been constructed for a study area near Price, Utah, where longwall panels were mined near an escarpment. This status report includes preliminary results showing that the pattern of subsidence surrounding the escarpment can be simulated through numerical modeling. Models that include such structural details as joint and fracture patterns will better simulate subsidence patterns .and magnitude. By locating longwall panels strategically in relation to the escarpment, stability may be preserved throughout the mining process. Numerical modeling provides a method to analyze relatively quickly the effects of longwall panel location and resulting subsidence on escarpment stability. The goal is to provide a relatively accurate predictive tool for mine planning to determine if escarpment stability can be maintained while maximizing extraction of the coal reserves.

Longwall mining began within the Pittsburgh coalbed of Pennsylvania (PA) in the early 1970?s. Originally, longwall mine layouts were designed to fit within existing room-and-pillar operations, where panels were limited to that of typical production panels, e.g. a few hundred feet wide by a few thousand feet long. In these early designs, the gate entries were comprised of chain pillars similar to those found along main entry systems or within pillar recovery sections. The modern longwall mine has little in common with their 1970?s predecessors. Today the entire mine layout is designed around the longwall mining method. The longwall panels have grown to well over one thousand feet in width with lengths now measured in miles. In addition, development pillar sizes and shapes are matched to specific performance requirements.

When plotted as head vs. volume, fan curves start high and decrease in head with increasing volume while mine head curves start low and rise with increasing volume. Their intersection is the system operating point But wait a minute: Isn&apos;t head loss a negative number, a debit? And isn&apos;t fan head an energy addition, a credit? This, as every ventilation instructor knows, is often a stumbling block to student or audience comprehension. It is possible to use the intuitively correct curves -pressure losses as negative values and energy additions as positive values -and still obtain the correct operating point: adding the two curves produces a third curve that intersects the x-axis at the operating point, the point at \\tIich the fan energy input exactly matches air circulation energy loss. Using this technique also makes it easier to account for outside influences on the system, such as natural ventilating pressure; with the standard approach it is quite easy to add or subtract such influences to the wrong curve. This approach can be extended to the graphical solution of any series/parallel circuit or ventilation net\wrk. The results are the same, and the approach is logically consistent and less confusing.

Integrating a research and development department into an engineering company&apos;s corporate structure can be rewarding to the engineering division, the R&D group, and, most of all, the company&apos;s clients. Actually, the R&D department is a logical extension of the conventional processing group within an engineering organization-but the R&D group provides services as needed to the engineering department while it is carrying out regular testing, pilot plant, and preliminary feasibility studies. Backup Services Provided With an R&D group, the engineering division does not need a process engineering group as such. The R&D group provides project backup services for feasibility studies, preliminary and detailed engineering, construction, and startup. The R&D group, in turn, benefits from its close association with project engineers, draftsmen, estimators, and computer capabilities in the engineering division. The client also benefits from the arrangement because R&D and engineering skills are available to both departments on an as-needed basis without standby eost. To handle the integrated responsibility of R&D projects, as well as conceptual design and preliminary feasibility studies, the R&D staff must be carefully selected. These research engineers should: • have a good background in plant practice as a mill superintendent or chief metallurgist; • be capable of organizing and supervising a testing program or a pilot plant campaign; •be innovative and willing to accept new ideas and concepts; • be able to translate lab test results into a workable flowsheet through sound conceptual design and feasibility studies; and •be able to communicate with clients. In short, the R&D engineer must be a jack of all process-engineering trades to successfully take a project from concept to operating reality. "INTRODUCTION The recent drop in iron ore prices has claimed an unwitting casualty in vanadium. Vanadium is dominantly produced as a co-product of steel production. The recent shutdown at EVRAZ’s Mapochs steel-vanadium operations in South Africa has cut-off 10% of the world’s vanadium output. Earlier in February, 2015, Australia’s Atlantic Ltd. suspended operations at its Windimurra iron-vanadium complex after a fire caused severe damage at the plant. Since then, challenging market conditions has resulted in the permanent closure of this operation. This decoupling of vanadium production from integrated iron ore producers presents an opportunity for vanadium exploration companies to target single-product deposits. This trend is manifested in the increasing number of pure-play vanadium ventures around the world.The mine production of vanadium is dominated by three countries namely, China, South Africa and Russia, which collectively produce 98% of the world’s vanadium. While the use of vanadium as an alloy in the steel industry remains by far the largest application for this metal, growth in demand is expected to come from the renewable energy industry in the form of batteries for energy storage. This paper summarizes the current state of vanadium exploration, briefly describes the vanadium market and lists sources of future demand for the metal. TREND IN VANADIUM EXPLORATION The most active participants in the current vanadium exploration are pure-play vanadium ventures in Brazil, South Africa and Australia. These ventures are targeting deposits with higher vanadium grade than those typically mined in titaniferous magnetite operated by integrated steel-vanadium producers. The 10% shortfall in vanadium production resulting from the shutdown at EVRAZ’s Mapochs is expected to be partially compensated by Largo Resources’ Maracás Menchen vanadium operation located in the State of Bahia in Brazil, which commenced operation in August 2014 and is expected to reach design capacity of 11,400 tonnes of vanadium pentaoxide (V2O5) by the end of 2015. The estimated production1 for 2015 is 6,500 tonnes of V2O5 at a target production cost of $3.60/lb. This is the first vanadium operation to be placed in production in the Western Hemisphere in over 35 years."

High-energy consumption in primary aluminum production (from bauxite ores) makes secondary aluminum production (from metallic raw materials such as scrap and dross) very critical. Aluminum dross, as a waste, arises in pyrometallurgical processes, and it is the mixture of metallic Al, Al2O3, other metal oxides, metal halides, and some other compounds like AlN. Aluminum dross has two subgroups (white and black) with respect to its metallic aluminum content. White dross is a secondary aluminum resource because of its high metallic aluminum content, whereas black dross, having low metallic aluminum content, is generally disposed in dumping areas. In the present study, it was aimed to develop a simple technique to valorize aluminum black dross in the form of alumina-based ceramic materials through pyrometallurgical (calcination) and hydrometallurgical (leaching) operations. Moreover, thermochemical simulations were conducted by using HSC Chemistry 6.12 software to simulate calcination conditions. After leaching experiments, an alumina-based ceramic containing approximately 36.8% Al2O3, 61.4% MgAl2O4 with 1.8% Na2FeO4, which might be available to use as a spinel refractory in steel smelting furnaces, was obtained in the experiment carried out in a solution containing 10 mLH2SO4 and 40 mL distilled water (3.5 M). Moreover, the sinterability of the alumina-based ceramic was investigated at the temperatures from 1350 to 1550 °C. In the sample which was sintered at 1550 °C, a density value of 3.15 g cm−3 and a hardness value of 69.58 HV were measured.

Nowadays, the HPGR (high-pressure grinding rolls) is an intermediate step between filtering and balling in the most modern iron ore pelletizing operation. The operation debottlenecks filtering process and reduces pressure over the typical milling process to control particle size to the balling. The present study evaluated aspects of microwave application to the iron ore concentrate fed to HPGR in a bench scale unit. Iron ore concentrate was irradiated varying the microwave exposure time and grinding efficiency was evaluated. The moisture influence in the HPGR efficiency was also assessed. The pellet feed blaine surface area (BSA) improved by 300 cm2/g and % < 325# fraction by 3%. Conference themes are usually chosen by organizers to reflect the current state of the industry. The Colorado Section MPD came up with what may be the most appropriate theme of a mining conference during the last few years. The local SME MPD section’s theme of its 56th annual conference was “The Wild, Wild World of Mining.” The current boom can be felt in all aspects of the industry, including exploration, mining, processing, sustainability, and economic and political issues. Each of the 25 speakers at the conference, held in Colorado Springs, CO, touched on how the boom has impacted each of those aspects. The meeting attracted about 110 people from around the world.
