Philippines is a country that is richly endowed in mineral wealth. In 1988, Climax Arimco Mining Corp. (CAMC) geologists found the Dinkidi porphyry gold-copper deposit in Nueva Vizcaya province. It is the most significant mineral discovery in that country in recent times. To date, the company has defined indicated resources of 124 Mt (136 million st) of 1-g/t (0.029-oz/st) gold and 0.4% copper. This includes a high-grade core of 7.9 Mt (8.7 million st) of 6-g/t (0.175-oz/st) gold equivalent. Total contained metal is 124.4 t (4 million oz) of gold and 499 kt (1.1 billion lb) of copper. Dinkidi's discovery resulted from initial geologic reconnaissance and recognition of the intrusive complex that is exposed at surface and anomalous in its topographic expression. This was followed by systematic exploration. This includes extensive gradient array induced polarization (IP), ground magnetics, geochemical sampling and diamond drilling. This later defined a further 16 satellite porphyry targets in the Didipio region. Climax was been granted a Financial and Technical Assistance Agreement contract with the Philippine government. It allows 100% foreign ownership of mining projects. After four years of negotiations, Climax was the first company to have such an application granted. Some 120 applications from numerous international mining companies are waiting for approval following implementation of new Philippine Mining Act of 1995. Exploration history Didipio is located 200 km (125 miles) north of Manila at an elevation of about 700 m (2,300 ft) in the remote Sierra Madre mountains. This region remains mostly unexplored. The property is accessed by 25 km (15 miles) of logging track from the town of Cabarroguis, Quirino. The area experiences an average rainfall of about 3,000 mm (118 in.) a year. Most of it falls during the July-to-November typhoon season. Didipio was first recognized as a gold province in the 1970s when native Ifugao and Ilongot hunters discovered alluvial gold in the region. The region had been prospected over the years by local companies. They were mostly prospecting for alluvial gold. However, in 1988, Climax Mining geologists identified the potential of an obscure razorback ridge protruding from the alluvial valley floor. This ridge, later named Dinkidi by Climax, was the site of several small- scale tunnels. Locals had mined narrow quartz stockwork veining and sluiced soft argillic alteration zones, using irrigation canals and sluice boxes to catch free gold.

Different mixtures of the three polymorphs of silica viz. quartz, cristobalite and tridymite are analyzed by x-ray diffraction (XRD) and their IR spectra are investigated by photoacoustic spectroscopy. It is observed that XRD provides a higher resolution to distinguish between the three polymorphs in a sample than IR spectroscopy. In the latter, a sharp band near 617 cm-1 is characteristic of both cristobalite and tridymite. A mine dust sample is quantitatively analyzed by XRD and it is shown to contain illite, quartz, kaolinite and calcite.

The annual rainfall at Minera Yanacocha's gold mining operations in northern Peru averages 1.2 meters. The influx of water into the operations is higher than losses to evaporation and by ore absorption which results in a positive water balance. To minimize water intake and maintain a balance, some special operating procedures are required, and a system involving diversion ditches, storm ponds, heap skirting and detoxification and treatment of excess water is practiced. An operation background is also reviewed at the beginning of the paper.

The concepts of conditional probabi1ity and geometrical probability are used to establish a relation between the probability density of the trace length and the probability density of the discontinuity diameter. The discontinuity is represented as a thin circular disc. A numerical solution scheme is used to obtain the probability density of the disc diameter from the probability density of the trace length. An example was used to illustrate the possibly large difference between the mean discontinuity diameter and the mean trace length.

Pilot-scale tests indicate that effective concentration of fine gold from Colorado River sands can be achieved by flotation with the air-sparged hydrocyclone. The fine sands (55% -400 mesh and 0.01 opt*) from gravity concentration were processed with a 5-cm air-sparged hydrocyclone (capacity ~1.0 t/h dry solids). Concentrate grades as high as 5.0 opt were produced in a single stage at a recovery of 75%. The separation efficiency was significantly better than that achieved in conventional batch flotation experiments.

For every million ounces/year of gold produced by mining and process operations, each 1 % loss to tails represents 10,000 oz/year of production sacrifice. Recovering this lost gold would generate aditional revenue of $3 million/year at $300/oz. Similarly, if the average recovered grade is say 0.15 oz/st, every $0.45/st reduction in operating costs will result in equivalent annual savings of $3 million. This paper describes the application of a technique to realize such cash flow benefits for milling operations.

INTRODUCTION Under certain circumstances the closure of former mines which are located above a certain flood level can result in problems such as the emanation of detrimental substances after having completed filling and reclamation operations. This especially applies to uranium mines in which the radiation dose could far exceed the dose of natural background radiation. By means of an example of the uranium mining in Germany in the following it will be demonstrated how to cope with this problem. On the basis of comparative investigations in various vein deposits and using ventilation scheme calculations proposals for the optimization of the necessary forced ventilation can be submitted. REPORT ON SITUATION In the period 1946 - 1989 the former Soviet-German joint- stock company "Wismut" developed into the biggest European uranium producer with a total output of about 220.000 t of uranium. A major mineraldeposit district was the deposit of Schlemaf Alberoda in the Saxon Ore Mountains, in which 80.000 t of uranium were produced. Thus it is among the biggest uranium de- posits of the world, from which various other metals were at- tracted for many centuries. The exploitation of the Schlemal Alberoda deposit involved steep veins in regions near the surface as well as depths of 1.800 m. Until 1991 a total excavation space of 40 million m3, which is flooded at present, was produced. With the average increase in the water level of 80 cm per week the final flood level is expected to be reached in the year 2003. The shaft 373 at present still being used for ventilation will be no longer available since the second quarter of 1998 after flooding the -540 m level because it is not connected with the excavation system near the surface. As a study shows, a radiation dose far above the natural back- ground radiation has to be expected for the town of Schlema due to the extensive mining activities near the surface and due to the subsequent displacement with missing depression fo the main mine ventilating fan. An uncontrolled air flow containing radon leaves the open mine excavation due to the effect of the natural ventilating pressure and emanation caused by the barometric pressure drop with atmospheric pressure fluctuations. This mine air with its high-level radioactive equilibrium results in a high radiation dose in buildings (see Figure l). After having switched off the main ventilating fan in order to investigate the effect of the missing depression the increase in radon concentrations amounted up to 700% in various buildings of Schlema. This was partially due to the inversion state of the weather at that time. The high radon concentration has detrimental effects on the health of the population and of the miners working on the further reclamation in regions above the flood level. ANALYSIS OF THE RADON EMANATION RATE EXPECTED Considering the composition of the radon inflow from the mine workings it becomes evident that 80 % of the radon inflow originates from abandoned excavations and only 20 %from open ventilated mine excavations. This fact has to be taken into account for the ventilation after having reached the final state of flooding. After completing ventilation the radiation dose on the surface is mainly due to the radon emanation from excavations close to the surface. Investigations of the Wismut GmbH showed the in- crease in the specific radon emanation rate by a factor of 100 for abandoned excavations as compared to new drivings. One reason is the larger specific surface of abandoned galleries caused by displacements due to mining activities as well as by fall of hanging. Furthermore the radon can enter the gallery through joints, which have subsequently opened by convergences. All these effects result in a larger free surface available for radon diffusion. The large number of drivings in the deposit sections near the surface and the fact that the highest uranium contents are found near the surface as well as the high fracturing are further reasons for higher emanation rates. Considering these facts it can be expected that the radon inflow of 10.000 kBq/s, which refers to an open mine excavation of about 1.4 million m3, represents a minimum. Only by increasing the specific surface, for which a numerical value has still to be determined, this value will increase with certainty. An extensive radon emanation from the residual excavation, which cannot be flooded, can only be prevented by maintaining the ventilation system. The low pressure produced by the fan in the mine openings prevents the emanation of air containing radon due to the effect of the natural ventilating pressure. Without the controlled withdrawal of the radon the population as well as the miners working on the further reclamation in areas above the flood level would be endangered. Therefore the follow-

The New York City Transit System is celebrating its Diamond Jubilee this year. In 1904, 9.3 route miles of New York's first subway was placed in operation in lower Manhattan. Since that date the system has grown to 230 route miles and 458 stations (See Exhibit #1). The age of the system immediately provides a clue to the nature of our construction activity. While we must always plan for the future and expand the system in the direction of the future needs in New York, a substantial amount of time and money must be channeled towards the modernization and maintenance of the existing system which provides vital transportation for 3-1/2 million passengers a day. This paper however will be directed to our New Route's Construction and, specifically, to three rock tunnel and cut and cover sections presently under construction. Currently, New York is engaged in the construction of about 9 New Route miles of structure. Briefly, the 3 Sections we will discuss are as follows: Route 131-A Section 5A is a 4 track structure in Manhattan and includes the new Lexington Avenue Station. This 1240 foot long section is located between Park Avenue and 3rd Avenue and is a combined cut and cover and rock tunnel section under 63rd Street. Route 131-A Section 5B is an intricate 2423 foot long 4 track rock tunnel section extending from 3rd Avenue to the FDR Drive under 63rd Street in Manhattan.

Hectorite is a rare magnesium-lithium clay mineral that occurs at many places in the McDermitt caldera of Nevada-Oregon. Commercial development of several high purity deposits began in 1986. The hectorite that was precipitated in a lake environment formed after the collapse of the McDermitt caldera. Hectorite beds and lenses are associated with volcanic sediments, limestones, dolomites, zeolites and locally sandy bentonites. The high purity deposits appear to be associated with hydrothermal areas. The hectorite consists of extremely small, flake-shaped crystals. Calcium (Ca) is the predominant exchangeable ion. Its color ranges from white to light green. Commercial uses include high-brightness, magnesium-aluminum-silicate (MAS) products, organophilic clays, pulp retention and ceramics. The MAS is used as a suspending agent, binder, stabilizer and thixotrope in aqueous solutions for cosmetics, household cleaners, pharmaceuticals and miscellaneous industrial applications. Hectorite-based organophilic clays are used in printing inks and paints. The McDermitt caldera complex is located astride the Nevada-Oregon boundary west of the town of McDermitt, NV (Fig. 1). The structural complex is elliptical in shape, extending about 43 km (27 miles) north-south and 34 km (21 miles) east-west. This area was the site of extensive volcanism during the Miocene (24 to 18 million years). The complex consists of five overlapping calderas with the oldest at the south end of the complex (Rytuba et al., 1979). Each of the vent areas collapsed and is marked by a ring fracture zone. The ring fractures around the outer boundary of the caldera complex are shown in [Fig.1].

INTRODUCTION Underground structures are generally regarded to be safer than surface structures during strong seismic motion, except when crossing a causative fault. Recent studies of observed earthquake damage to tunnels generally support this view, although instances of severe damage and, occasionally, collapse are reported. For proposed underground construction of sensitive structures such as nuclear power plants, liquefied natural gas facilities, and nuclear waste repositories, a verification of the seismic response of underground structures will be required.. This paper discusses the stabilization recommendations used in a study of additional costs required to protect tunnels against ground motion caused by earthquakes and underground nuclear explosions (1). The study is a part of the site investigations for possible construction of a nuclear waste repository. The additional costs estimated in the study are not presented here; only the stabilization measures are presented in the present paper. The tunnels, which would constitute the underground facilities of a possible repository, are assumed to be 5.5 m (18 ft) in diameter and to be located at a depth of 600 m (2,000 ft). Three candidate geological materials are considered: argillite (shale), granite, and tuff. Several peak ground accelerations are used: 0.3g, 0.5g, and 0.7g for earthquakes, and 0.5g, 0.7g, and 1.0g for underground nuclear explosions. Potential damage due only to shaking is considered here. This paper does not discuss problems that result from creep or sudden rupture of intersected faults or from ground failures at portals.

The Janet Annenberg Hooker Hall of Geology, Gems and Minerals, located in the National Museum of Natural History, Smithsonian Institution, in Washington DC, opened in September, nine years after initial fundraising efforts were begun. The 1,858-m2 (20,000-sq ft), $16-million hall was mostly funded by private groups and individuals, including $1.7 million from 43 National Mining Associa¬tion (NMA) member companies. Companies that contributed more than $100,000 included Cyprus Amax, Phelps Dodge, Asarco, Homestake Mining, BHP, Caterpillar, Cleveland Cliffs, Exxon Coal and Minerals, Freeport-McMoRan, Newmont Mining and Peabody Holdings. The mining industry's contributions funded a walk-through Mine Gallery. It. features diora¬mas of four mines, as well as numerous specimens associated with the mines. The Mine Gal¬lery demonstrates to the public the importance of mining. The hall was named in honor of Hooker. She contributed $5 million in cash plus the Hooker Yellow Starburst Diamonds to the project. The hall is touted by the Smithsonian as the "most comprehensive earth science complex of its kind." It consists of seven galleries, each devoted to different aspects of gems, minerals and rocks. In addition to the Mine Gal¬lery, the hall contains a collection of gemstones and jewelry pieces, an extensive collection of minerals, a gallery devoted to plate tectonics and a gallery devoted to the moon, meteorites and the solar system. The new hall is a complete makeover of the old and outdated Geology Hall. It was built in the 1960s and finally closed to the public in 1995.

Quebrada Blanca (QB) is a copper project located in the semi-arid Andean highlands of northern Chile. The operation is situated 170 km ( 105 miles) southeast of the port of Iquique and 30 km (18 miles) west of the border with Bolivia, at an altitude of about 4300 m (14,000 ft) (Fig. 1). The QB ore body is a secondarily enriched porphyry copper deposit containing reserves of 85 Mt (93 million st) grading 1.3% copper. Underlying the enriched zone is a significant primary ore zone containing several hundred million tons grading about 0.5% copper. In the late 1970s and early 1980s Falconbridge and its affiliates spent $20- $30 million exploring the deposit and conducting feasibility studies. Falconbridge, however, decided not to develop the property. It was returned to its owners, Empresa National de Mineria (ENAMI), a Chilean state mining corporation. In 1988, ENAMI announced its intention to privatize the property through public bidding. Cominco Resources, then 61% owned by Cominco Ltd., examined the property and the extensive data base developed by Falconbridge. In conjunction with its parent company, Cominco Resources submitted a proposal to ENAMI to construct an open- pit mine, with heap leaching and solvent extraction/electrowinning (SX-EW) processing facilities. The plan would use patented heap leaching technology developed by Sociedad MineraPudahuel (SMP), a privately owned Chilean mining company. At that time, a $150-million project that would produce about 45 kt/a (50,000 stpy) of cathode copper was envisaged.

In the non-operational ?Górka? quarry, there are situated both a waste disposal site of an area of 6.7 ha, containing approximately 1 million ton wastes from high aluminium content materials (incl. about 400000 t of wastes from aluminum hydroxide production), and a pond of an area of roughly 3 ha, up to 15 m deep, with about 400000 m3 of polluted water and infiltrates from the disposal site mentioned. The basic problem related to the effluents in the Górka pond is both their high alkalinity (pH 12-13.4) and a variable analysis of pollutants whose level increases appreciably with the pond?s depth. The solution offered provides, first of all, remedial pumping and a treatment of effluents retained in the Górka reservoir. Effluents would be treated in a reverse osmosis plant according to a process verified so far on a quarter-commercial scale. The treatment process by-product, a brine solution (containing about 25% NaCl) whose amount may reach up to 100000 m3 might be supplied to the Debiensko Mine, which produces technological salt from salt-bearing mine waters. In parallel, an intake of underflows of infiltrates would be provided (previous geochemical identification) in order to take them away from the high aluminum site (by means of deep wells, and possibly girdling ditches). Such effluents would be subject to treatment. The successive stage is the utilization of approx. 50000 m3 of bottom slurry, left in the emptied reservoir, in the production of self-solidifying mixtures, which would be then used for sealing the bottom and the banks of the Górka reservoir. The empty and sealed reservoir would be filled up with a volume of approx. 600000 t of ashes, coming from coal burning in the thermal-electric power station. For the last stage, instead, is scheduled the rehabilitation of the entire waste disposal site in the Górka quarry. The site will be drained, covered with a leveling, sealing and rehabilitating layer, which will allow to introduce plants on the rehabilitated waste site. "1. INTRODUCTIONDo contractual practices affect project outcome? Can better contractual practices improve the likelihood of project success? The consensus amongst experts is that better contractual practices really do improve project outcomes. With this in mind the members of the International Tunnelling Association (ITA) Working Group 3 on Contractual Practices (WG3) pooled their collective knowledge to publish in 2011 the document entitled The ITA Contractual Framework Checklist for Subsurface Construction Contracts (ITA Working Group 3, 2011). Written for projects involving significant subsurface works, e.g. tunnels and caverns, the ITA Framework Checklist explains the major contractual issues that must be considered to ensure a successful project. Its goal is not to specify how each issue should be resolved, but rather to highlight the issues and give recommendations on how they should be addressed. The Checklist is compatible with, and provides guidance for reviewing, standard contracts such as FIDIC and NEC. One of the authors is a co-author of the Checklist and has contributed to previous papers describing the Checklist and its applicability to hydropower projects (Hodgkinson & Wilson 2014, Hodgkinson & Wilson 2015). The Checklist identifies a series of issues that should be contractually defined, which can be summarized as follows: •,Methods for dealing with geotechnical uncertainties should be defined in the contract •,There should be an appropriate level of geotechnical/geological investigation •,Sufficient mobilization periods should be allowed •,Sufficient time should be allowed for testing and commissioning •,Procedures for timely dispute resolution should clearly defined •,Quality and performance requirements should be clearly defined and measurable •,Provision should exist for cost consequences of unforeseen circumstances •,Dispute resolution processes should be clearly defined •,Payment processes should be fair and clearly defined •,Risk should be clearly allocated and parties should be able to bear the risks they carry •,There should be a mechanism for adjusting payments according to conditions •,The risk management approach should be clearly defined •,Admeasurement or unit price approaches are recommended •,The responsibilities of each party must be clearly defined •,The consequences of non-performance should be clearly defined •,The construction programme (schedule) should be realistic."

HISTORIACAL INTRODUCTION Mineral processing has three principle branches, to quote Taggart, "Ore Dressing, which comprises the methods of separation of solids in inorganic crude by means which do not affect substantial chemical change; Extractive Metallurgy, which utilizes chemical reactions for separations of constituents from solids in inorganic crude; and, Fuel Technology, which employs both physical and chemical methods for separating and rearrangement of liquid gaseous and solid components in crude oil and natural gas, tar sands, shale oil, or coal." The scope of this handbook covers the first two classifications, that is, "ore dressing" and "extractive metallurgy," which have been combined in one term: "mineral processing." For a brief history of the development of mineral processing, one could well refer to the Introduction, Sec. I of the Handbook of Mineral Dressing by Taggart, Froth Flotation, Principles of Mineral Dressing by Gaudin, and the original Richard's Ore Dressing, volume No. 1, first published in 1903-1905. In these references and the references given in them a coverage of the history of "ore dressing" can be found and studied at the reader's leisure. For the history of extractive metallurgy as well as ore dressing, the bibliography in General References, taken from a History of Ex¬tractive Metallurgy by F. Habashi, will give a good background for those who are interested in more detail on the history of metallurgy in general. Mineral processing covers a very wide field as is illustrated by the topics discussed in Part II of this handbook and dates back to the early history of man which started with the production and use of native minerals such as gold, silver, copper, mercury, and meteoric iron which were washed or picked from deposits on the surface of the earth and worked because of their malleability. Later, melting was discovered and then it was possible to cast objects of these metals, excluding mercury. The discovery of a method for reducing the metal¬lic oxide probably was developed from melting fragments of oxides or roasted sulfides with charcoal, so that the native metal could be produced in simple blast furnaces such as are used today in rural parts of Spain, China, and elsewhere. Eventually, it was learned that iron could be readily worked when hot, which resulted in its replacing bronze for tools, weapons, and cutlery. The feasibility evaluation of the Borealis project of Houston International Minerals Corporation (HIMCO) was initiated in October of 1980. The operation of the Borealis Mine and heap leaching plant began in late 1981. In order to achieve the rapid development schedule several items were necessary: 1) Pre-planning of environmental requirements and early study of key issues. 2) Adoption of conservative design criteria. 3) Coordination and cooperation between HIMCO and regulatory agencies. 4) Adoption of specialized engineering and construction procedures. 5) Careful evaluation of owner project management philosophy.

The economic value of calcium carbonate when used as an extender or filler basically falls into two categories: 1. Lessening the cost of the final product to which it is added. 2. Contributing desirable physicals to the final product. In most instances, a combination of these two may be achieved. The mineral limestone which is found in abundant quantities in many areas of the world is the source of 99% (+) of the calcium carbonate used as fillers and extenders. Precipitated, or chemically formed, calcium carbonate is also available, but by comparison, in very limited quantities.

Microtunneling has successfully completed both horizontal and vertical curves. This paper covers the historical development of curved microtunneling and a description of one microtunneling project. The completed microtunnel is used for electrical transmission in Japan. The crossing had several concerns including right of way, social disruption, obstructions, the cost of intermediate shafts, and political restrains. In order for this drive to meet all of the imposed restrictions, four horizontal curves and one vertical curve were planned and executed in accordance with the design. Iseki Poly-Tech of Tokyo, Japan designed and built the microtunneling machine to meet the project requirements. Curved microtunneling has been successfully used on fourteen projects in Japan. The reason for a curve has been that the project could not be rerouted, short straight drives could not be used to negotiate the curve, or the project’s social and environmental conditions required a curved tunnel. The following table (Table 1) includes summary information on 14 curved microtunnling projects that have been successfully completed in Japan. The first column is a reference number. Columns two through four include basic project information. The fifth column is the total project distance completed by microtunneling. The sixth column is the project’s microtunneling duration. The seventh column is the machine type and size. All of the machines listed are manufactured by Iseki Poly-Tech of Tokyo, Japan. The size is the internal concrete pipe diameter; all of the projects listed were completed with Japanese standard concrete pipe. The eighth column contains a general description of the soil. The soil type and blow counts are approximately equal to ASTM D 2487 standards. The ninth column lists the radius of the curve and the span distance or the distance microtunneled that included the curve. The radius of a vertical curve is denoted with a “VR”, a span with both a left and right hand curve is denoted with a “S”. Other significant first events are also noted in this column. The first curved microtunneling project was completed in 1982 using a conventional microtunneling machine with standard Japanese concrete pipe and a very long radius curve while maintaining grade for the gravity sewer. The second curved microtunneling project included multiple radii curves, all in the same direction, on a single drive. In 1989, on the fifth curved microtunneling project, a “S” curve was successfully negotiated. On the seventh curved microtunneling project, completed in1995, a tight radius curve was negotiated. In 1996, the eighth project included a vertical curve. The thirteenth curved microtunneling project, completed in 1997, was the first project to utilize a microtunneling machine specifically designed to negotiate curves. Copper ore from the Rakha Copper Concentrator (India) was successfully floated using LIX-65 NS as the collector. The beneficial role of this reagent was clearly demonstrated in hatch-flotation tests. From a feed containing around 1% Cu, it was possible in a single-stage flotation to obtain a 23.7% Cu concentrate with a recovery of more than 90%. The plant now uses rougher, scavenger and a two-stage cleaning process. The tests demonstrated that LIX-65 NS is superior to conventional xanthate for the recovery of copper from the Rakha ore.

Premining investigations involve the determination of roof, floor, and coal seam characteristics to delineate areas of troublesome ground control prior to development of a mine. Data obtained can be useful in mine design, equipment selection, estimation of face productivity, development of ground control plans and assessing ground control costs, and in conducting feasibility studies and financial analyses. This paper discusses 1) the causative factors associated with ground instability, 2) how useful data can be obtained for these factors during premining investigations, and 3) analysis techniques to delineate probable areas of ground instability.
