Introduction The usefulness of microscopes in exploration and ore dressing, problems has been documented for the older generation of mining industry personnel in such publications as Schneiderhohn and Ramdohr (1931). A more recent publication that examines the subject is Process Mineralogy, a conference proceedings of The Metallurgical Society (TMS, 1981). However, it is worthwhile to review some of the principles and advantages of microscopic examination of rocks, ores, and mill products. Transmitted light Microscopists can look at materials in transmitted or reflected light. Studying transmitted light is what is usually meant by petrography. In this method, the light passes through the specimen. The upper polarizing filter can be moved in (crossed nicols) or out (open nicols) of the light path. The specimen can be a thin section, a slice of rock mounted on a glass slide and ground to 30 µm (>400 mesh). Or, it can be a sample of rock or ore crushed to about 70 µm (200 mesh). Transmitted light study is particularly suited to gangue minerals, such as quartz, carbonates, and feldspars, and to the study of alteration processes and products. It has some applications to liberation studies. Minerals are identified in transmitted light by observable and measurable optical parameters, such as cleavage and twinning. The scope of work for the fast track construction of the Weeks Island Replacement Facility, Weeks Island, Louisiana included the design and construction of two salt mines. Mine #1 - An interim underground mining level consisting of a 975 m (3200 ft) incline and 3520 m of 5.5 m x 7.3 m (11560 ft of 18 ft x 24 ft) drill and blast excavation; raise boring; core drilling; roadheader excavation; complete bulk material handling facilities utilizing an existing production shaft. Mine #2 - Simultaneous with the interim mine construction a new one million ton per year underground salt mine was constructed consisting of: two 5.5 m diameter x 381 m (18 ft diameter x 1250 ft) deep shafts; 76450 cu m (100,000 cu yd) of drill and blast bottom excavation; surface and undergound bulk material handling systems (conveyors, skip loaders, shaft equipment, hoisting); ground freezing for water control for both the production and service shafts; the design of the first underground doublewall slipform installation of a dynamic bitumen shaft lining system; the emergency grouting of both the existing production shaft and the interim mining level in the salt dome; 227 mt x 64 m (250 ton x 210 ft) high structural steel production headframe; 2.2 MW (3000 hp) double drum mine hoist; service shaft headframe; and service buildings.

1. INTRODUCTION The Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA) has often taken a leading role in introducing innovative construction technologies to build its transit system. Most recently, Contract Section E-5a, which included Fort Totten Station and Tunnels was constructed utilizing the New Austrian Tunneling Method (NATM) in soft ground. Along with the station and tunnels, two permanent shafts were also constructed in soft ground employing the NATM technique. This project is located within the District of Columbia on the Greenbelt Route. The subject of this paper is to discuss the unique method of construction of these two shafts, and explore the benefits of applying the NATM technique to the construction of deep shafts. The design of the shafts was performed jointly by Jenny Engineering Corporation of Springfield, New Jersey, and Mayreder Consult of Linz, Austria. The designers also provided construction support services and a resident NATM expert at the site during construction. The construction of the project started in April 1988 by a joint venture of Mergentime Corporation and H. T. Construction, a subsidiary of Hochtief Company from Germany. This $48.7 million construction project has been completed. 2. SUBSURFACE CONDITIONS The two NATM shafts are located primarily in Cretaceous-age deposits that are over 100 million years old. These deposits are intermixed and lenticular in nature

With the end of active copper mining in 1983, the extensive underground mine workings and the Berkeley Pit, one of the largest open-pit mines in the United States, began to flood. Daily in- flow to the pit is about five million gallons per day, with the water level rising at a rate of 30 feet per year. To support the remedial investigation and feasibility study, a six-layer, three-dimensional MODFLOW-based ground water flow model was constructed to simulate the 9,100-acre site. The vertical domain of the model extended over 1,060 feet of elevation difference and consisted of a finite difference grid of 89 rows by 54 columns. All work was PC- based. Model boundaries were assigned to correspond to natural hydrologic features such as geologic contacts, faults, and surface water features. The fully calibrated model was approved by the State of Montana and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) for use in the site remediation. The computer model was used to determine ground water flow velocities and contaminant travel times within the alluvial sediments adjacent to the Berkeley Pit. The purpose of the model was to predict future alluvial ground water flow directions should acid- and heavy metal-laden flood waters filling the Berkeley Pit rise up and enter the Alluvial Aquifer.

Improving the state-of-the-art of tunneling is a continuing challenge to those involved in underground construction. New methods and procedures are usually evolved over a relatively long period of time as compared to advancements in other types of construction. To a large extent this is probably due to the fact that tunneling deals with a material or medium - the rock structure - whose physical properties are not only extremely varied, but in many instances virtually unknown until time of penetration. This hovering of the unknown tends to make "non believers" of many and at best leads to a general reluctancy of accepting new ideas or procedures. The situation is further complicated by: 1) discrepancies in terminology and respective meanings as used by different disciplines to describe, define or evaluate pertinent factors and their relative effect on the tunneling process and 2) the fact that no two tunneling situations are identical with respect to either geological conditions or construction and contractual requirements. In spite of the above there have been many successfully completed tunnels which make it apparent that both the technical and practical expertise needed to develop or project improvements is available within the industry. The Central Florida Phosphate District, one of the most productive phosphate districts in the world, has been mined principally within Polk and Hillsborough Counties, Florida. Recent development is extending the district southward into Hardee, Manatee, and DeSoto Counties. This area is known as the Southern Extension. The combined area of these two phosphate-bearing areas encompasses about 2,000 square miles. Structurally, the district and its Southern Extension lie at the southern end of the Ocala Arch and are flanked by the Hillsborough High to the northwest. South of this area is the South Florida Embayment. The Osceola Low lies to the east. The phosphorite within the Central Florida Phosphate District generally dips very gently (<0.1°) to the south. The boundaries of the central Florida Phosphate District are generally defined by thinning of the phosphorite due the adjacent structurally high areas to the north, west, and east, and by increased clay, CaO, and MgO content reflecting lithologic differences to the east and south. The Bone Valley Member of the Peace River Formation and reworked sediments of more recent age were the primary ore-bearing horizon in the Polk-Hillsborough County area. As those reserves are depleted, the less desirable phosphorites of the Peace River Formation are being exploited in the Southern Extension.

Pre-mining identification of acid forming mine and waste materials is of concern to the mining industry because of the potential for the generation of acid mine drainage, acid rock drainage, and soil acidity problems. Accurate identification of acid forming material is essential for developing appropriate waste management strategies to reduce environmental problems related to acid generation from sulphide containing wastes. The acid-base accounting procedure, in its various forms , is commonly used for pre-mining screening of mine and mine waste materials. The procedure is generally effective when used and applied correctly but is prone to incorrect interpretation of results which can have significant financial and environmental implications. This paper examines the acid-base accounting Procedure and the possibility of misuse of this method with special emphasis on the sampling method, the sulphide forms, the acid neutralization capacity, and the interpretation of results. Data from numerous coal, base metal, and gold mining operations are used to illustrate the application of the acid-base account. The data base indicates that overall, approximately 1/3 of all waste generated by mining and mineral processing is potentially acid forming indicating the need for correct identification and management. Problems associated with simple application of 'absolute' acid-base criteria for classifying acid forming material are highlighted and the need for developing site specific or 'relative' criteria is discussed and illustrated by case study.

Ieropigi Fe-Ni deposit is located in northern Greece, in Kastoria?s prefecture near Albania?s borders. A laterite profile exposed by opencast mining and placed near the basement of the mine was chosen for sampling. Ten samples, representing ?pure? Fe-Ni ore, ophiolite-bedrock, ?red? ophiolite and ?enriched? ophiolite were collected, based on macroscopic observation. The samples were analysed by X-Ray powder Diffraction (XRD) for the determination of the mineral phases. Iron and Nickel concentrations of the same samples were also determined by X-Ray Fluorescence (XRF) methodology. The Fe-Ni ore samples consists predomi-nantly of hematite, goethite, chrysotile (serpentine), saponite and quartz. ?Red? ophiolite samples consists mainly of chrysotile, hematite, quartz, calcite and small amounts of paragonite and goethite. Bedrock and ?enriched ophiolite samples are comprised of chrysotile, hematite, calcite, quartz, nontronite, paragonite and sepiolite. The Fe content ranges between 13% and 49% in Fe-Ni ore samples and between 7% and 10% in ophiolite samples. The Ni content ranges between 1% and 3% in Fe-Ni ore samples and between 0.3% and 4.5% in ophiolite samples (the higher content is observed in the so-called ?enriched? ophiolite). A correlation between Fe-Ni concentrations and mineral assemblages is being attempted in order to evaluate the nickel-rich mineral phases. It is shown that the nickeliferous minerals are serpentine, hematite, goethite and saponite.

The waves of prospectors who struggled across the wide Alaskan wilderness between 1898 and 19 10 came close to but did not actually find the rich copper/zinc/silver deposits strung out along 161 km ( 100 miles) of felsic schist in the remote Brooks Range of northwestern Alaska. They had heard rumors of gold in the valley of the Kobuk River, so they skirted the Arctic ice pack in the Chukchi Sea and, in a force at least 800 men strong, ascended the Kobuk River in 1898. Twenty-eight placer mining camps were established but only a handful survived for more than a few years. One of the placers that died rapidly was Ruby Creek. A map showing the location of Alaskan mineral deposits is given in Fig. 1. The Ruby Creek miners, disappointed with the scarcity of gold in that creek, followed copper-bearing float to two places where the float was especially plentiful. Pits, a short adit, and a shallow shaft uncovered copper carbonates, bornite, and chalcopyrite in fractured limestone but the remoteness of the district blocked efforts to sell the claims or to raise capital for development. Shortly after 1906, the copper prospects were abandoned and, except for an account published in 1913 by the US Geological Survey, they were forgotten, as were the names of the prospectors.

Having an interest in coal slurry pipelines from a decade of arguments with Ed Wasp and crew at Bechtel about pumping thicker slurries slower, I immediately read this article and found nothing in it pertinant to the title. Ayat and Scott pumped five unidentified coals at 9% solids (50%-60% is the area of interest) in a 25-mm (1-in.) pipe around two square elbows through a 76-mm (3-in.) cyclone for up to 60 minutes and sized a large number of samples of unstated size on an unidentified wet screening device. They did not measure power consumption, discharge pressure, flow rate, or give pump tip speed or impeller diameter. They siad the cyclone had a "high" pressure drop (unmeasured) and did much of the degradation (measured) but more or less per unit of energy expended? Hargrove was not measured, so there are no data as to whether it would correlate with degradation. The authors conclude, with no attempt, correlation is "hard to establish." Please experiment before concluding. I am at a loss to know what "increasingly smaller size" means, much less what theory says such particles take "exponentially larger quantities of energy," which the authors neglected to measure. If such experiments without pertinent data or justified conclusions must be published, please attach a pertinant title.

INTRODUCTION Tunnel boring machines in non-abrasive competent rock with little or no water have set new performance standards in the driving of tunnels. However, when the machines have hit blocky or running ground, they have encountered difficulties. The success of a tunnelling machine is usually due to a thorough geological investigation which accurately describes the rock conditions, a well designed tunnel support system, and a tunnel boring machine designed to cope with these conditions. In some cases machines have had to be modified in the tunnel after the machine had commenced boring, because geological conditions were not correctly anticipated before tunnelling began. The features described herein are not a panacea for all conditons, and some of them, like an auxiliary thrust system that thrusts off a precast invert segment requires pre-planning of work on the part of the contractor. CUTTERHEAD DESIGN Figure 1 shows typical cutterheads of ten to fifteen years ago. Note the large buckets and large openings between the buckets. These large openings were considered necessary to gain easier access through the cutterhead for cutter changes. The standard cutter in those days was an 11 inch or 12 inch cutter with small bearings, and was generally a delicate tool for the duty it was to perform. INTRODUCTION The Lake Merced Transport is being constructed as part of San Francisco&apos;s Clean Water Program. The Clean Water Program, which began in the early 1970&apos;s, is designed to control wet weather, storm sewage overflows into the Pacific Ocean and San Francisco Bay. To accomplish this goal, a system of large underground storage and transport facilities, pump stations, modernized treatment plants, and outfalls is being built. By 1991, eighty percent of the system had been completed and was in operation. One of the remaining projects for the Clean Water Program is the Lake Merced Transport. The Lake Merced Transport is located in the extreme southwestern portion of San Francisco, as shown in Figure 1, Project Location. The transport will convey dry weather flow from the existing Lake Merced Pump Station to the Westside Pump Station. During wet weather, the transport will fill with sewage and runoff, with a storage capacity of 36 million liters. The Lake Merced Transport was expected to be excavated entirely within the Colma Formation, an alluvial deposit consisting of weakly cemented sand. Once excavation of the access portal at the Sloat/Great Highway parking lot began, it became evident that a portion of the tunnel would be excavated through beach/dune sand. Ore and waste cannot always be visually separated. The distinction between ore and waste may need to be made on the basis of blasthole sampling. Hand drawn dig limits or computer-generated contour lines do not account for uncertainty, economics or equipment. Geometric methods for interpreting grade information such as the polygonal or triangulation methods share the same limitations as contouring. Geostatistical techniques exist for the realistic modeling of grade variations and uncertainty. Decision analysis techniques exist for the binary classification of ore, and waste blocks in the presence of this uncertainty. Block-by-block classification is not enough; mining equipment cannot exercise free selection of blocks. There is a need for procedures to determine optimal dig limits that account for (1) the uncertainty in the grades, (2) the economics of risk-qualified decision-making, and (3) the ability of the mining equipment to dig to specific limits. This paper presents a procedure for optimal determination of dig limits that account for these constraints. Simulated annealing (SA) is used with modest computational requirements because the number of variables is relatively small. The solution of the optimization problem is dig limits that maximize profit under multiple constraints. The method is illustrated with different constraints and tested against hand drawn dig limits in a "Dig Limit Challenge," which illustrates the efficacy of the new method.

The Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation, and Liability Act of 1980 (CERCLA), also known as "Superfund", requires a listing of sites that have known releases or threatened releases of hazardous substances, pollutants, or contaminants throughout the U.S. When EPA determines that a significant threat exists, it places the worst contaminated sites on the National Priorities List (NPL). CERCLA provides EPA broad authority to clean up hazardous sites that threaten human health and the environment. There are currently 52 sites on the NPL that were placed on the list because of high human health or environmental risk as a result of non-coal mineral extraction, beneficiation, or processing operations. This list covers mining sectors from aluminum to zinc. While some of these sites were abandoned, many are still operating. (There are additional mine sites that have been recently proposed to be included on the NPL that are not included in this paper.) EPA is continuing to develop a mining program to address human health and environmental threats from active non-coal mines. EPA has performed a comprehensive study to assess the waste management practices at all of the 52 mine sites on the NPL. In addition, EPA is continuing to collect information on the specific mining sectors (i.e., gold, copper) that represent many of the NPL mine sites. One of the goals of this effort is to attempt to identify the types of mining practices that lead to human health and environmental problems at the NPL mine site. EPA estimates that there are currently 500 to 1,000 active mines (not including placer operations). While some mining NPL sites began operations before the turn of the century, only a handful of the NPL mines entirely ceased operations prior to 1970. Of the 52 NPL sites studied by EPA, 12 are currently active. By definition, these mines represent current mining practices. Approximately 17 additional NPL mines that ceased operations between 1970 and 1990 represent some degree of current mining practices. Therefore, at best, less than half on the 52 NPL mine sites can be said to definitely represent past mining practices. Although some mining waste management practices have changed over time, the basic technology for extraction and beneficiation of mineral ores have remained fairly constant over the last fifty years. While the use of acid to leach copper dumps, the use of cyanide to leach gold in heaps, and the spread of solvent extraction techniques has changed some aspects of mining, the basic operation of removing ore from the ground and concentrating it through beneficiation has remained fundamentally the same as when most of the non-active

"BACKGROUND As of December 2015, there are roughly 475 road tunnels within the United States according to the most recent national tunnel inventory data compiled by the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA); whereas, there are more than 615,000 highway bridges on public roads. The FHWA estimates that tunnels represent nearly 100 miles of Interstates, State routes, and local routes. Tunnels are part of the national transportation infrastructure and represent a significant financial investment for the owner and, hence, the tax payers. Tunnels, that are not properly maintained, usually require more extensive repairs and consume more resources. Tunnels must provide safe, reliable, and effective transportation even as these structures age and deteriorate. Furthermore, tunnels generally remain in service for extended periods of time due to their very high construction costs. For example, many tunnels were constructed decades ago during two historic periods of highway system expansion; the first period correlated with the era of public works programs linked to the Great Depression of the 1930-40s; and the second period of expansion occurred with the building of the interstate highway system in the 1950-60s. As such, these tunnels are fast approaching 60 to 80 years old. Congress enacted the Moving Ahead for Progress in the 21st Century Act (MAP-21), which was signed by the President on July 6, 2012. This legislation followed a fatal tunnel incident on July 10, 2006 and a National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) report1 that noted the importance of conducting regular tunnel inspections. MAP-21 authorized the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) to develop a mandatory inspection program for all tunnels on all public roadways (Bergeson and Ernst 2015): To help safeguard tunnel users and to ensure reliable levels of service, the FHWA developed the National Tunnel Inspection Program (NTIP), which is comprised of the National Tunnel Inspection Standards (NTIS), the Tunnel Operations Maintenance Inspection and Evaluation (TOMIE) Manual, the Specifications for National Tunnel Inventory (SNTI), and the Manual for Bridge Evaluation (MBE). The data collected from the program will be stored in a National Tunnel Inventory (NTI) database. A comprehensive and refresher training program was also developed to help qualify and certify key tunnel inspection personnel to include the program manager and team leader."

"Trace element analysis of placer gold can be used as a valuable exploration tool in order to determine the original deposit source and locating lode gold deposits. Placer gold collected from multiple districts in New Mexico and Alaska, coupled with a broad database of previously analyzed placer gold samples indicate correlations between chemical signatures (especially gold, silver, and copper) and type of deposits (i.e., Au-rich copper porphyry deposits, Au porphyry deposits, and epithermal deposits). By completing a chemical analysis and determining the particle morphology of placer gold collected from these districts using an electron microprobe, patterns in the chemical signatures from each location can be used to examine chemical variability (1) within the individual placer gold particles, (2) within the same district and (3) among different districts. INTRODUCTION Although there are numerous past studies on the chemical composition of placer gold by Newberry et al. (1997), Melchiorre (2001, 2009), Townley et al. (2003), and McLemore et al. (2014), the gold analyzed tends to be collected from one or few specific districts. Rarely do those studies compare compositional results to additional districts, or elaborate on the correlation between the elemental composition of the placer gold and the original deposit source for the respective districts. This research analyzes the composition of placer gold from multiple districts and within the same district. There are a number of elements, which can, in various quantities, be present in placer gold particles. Native gold can be in complete solid solution with native silver and contain additional elements including Cu, As, Pb, Fe, and S. The chemical signature of the gold is determined by the thermodynamic conditions of precipitation and transport as well as the total metal content of the system. As Townley et al. (2003) explains, “These thermodynamic conditions and metal budget differ from one type of hydrothermal deposit to another, and hence different deposit types will each have a characteristic gold compositional signature.” Identifying this signature can be a highly valuable tool in exploring for gold, as it can not only be used to determine the original source deposit of the placer gold, but provide valuable insight as to the erosion level of the present deposit."

The Hai-Shan No. 1 Coal Mine, located in northern Taiwan, is one of the typical coal mines on the island which, limited by natural condition, are mostly small in scale. With the advancing longwall method, the mine is now winning a seam, 80 cm thick, at a 32° dip, with a working depth of 824 m below surface. The annual output is about 50,000 mt of clean coal. At the working gallery, the virgin rock temperature may go up to 46°C, difficult to be brought dam to n acceptable level: because .of the tropical climate with high intake temperature and high humidity. Besides, at this depth, the intake air that goes down the long inclined shaft generates considerable heat due to autocompression. The mine is ventilated by a set of axial-flow fan with 38 m3/S of intake air at 2.2 KPA WG. With this volume of air, the temperature at the working-face is usually above 30°C WB. Appreciable lowering of the temperature is not expected even with an increased volume of ventilated air. For this reason, decision has. been made to try the installation of a pilot underground refrigeration unit near. the lowest gate road to cool the intake. air. from 32°C WB to 28°C WB which seems acceptable to on-the-spot workers exerting heavy physical labor. The experimental unit is designed for carrying away a total heat load of 90 Kw. The capacity of the unit is 200 Kw. The unit consists of a compressor, an evaporator, a condensor and a motor. The heat rejection is done in a cooling tower. Chilled water is circulated from the evaporator to the cooler by insulated pipes. The cooler consists of 90 Kw-coils with two fans and forces air by flexible ducting onto the working face. This paper examines mainly the effect of this additional reduction of working temperature, on working efficiency of the workers. Another aspect of this experiment is to evaluate the overall economy of underground refrigeration in small-sized coal mines under tropical condition. The success of such an experiment may lead to wider application of refrigeration to render many of the deeper mines economically workable.

The 71st Annual Meeting of the Minnesota Section of SME and the 59th Annual University of Minnesota Mining Symposium were held jointly April 14-16, 1998, in Duluth, MN. Registration was estimated at 450 people, about the same as last year&apos;s attendance. A short course on mine productivity and a trade show that included about 75 exhibitors were also held in conjunction with the SME meeting. This year&apos;s theme was "Iron ore and integrated steel - where are we going?" Although generally optimistic in the near term, the general feeling among the attendees is that the industry faces serious competitive challenges. The iron mining industry in Minnesota experienced a tremendous rebound from the devastating downturn of the 1980s. Today, however, all seven of Minnesota&apos;s taconite plants are operating at full capacity. And these high production levels are expected to continue during the next several years. Longer-term, however, Minnesota&apos;s producers face an increasingly competitive worldwide market, including stiff competition from Canadian operations. Because of the increasing competition, industry representatives in Minnesota believe that it is critical to strengthen their operations. To accomplish this, companies are looking to: ? Further reduce production costs. ? Bring new technologies into their operations. ? Develop value-added facilities such as direct-reduced iron. ? Expand their markets. The industry is also seeking more collaboration between industry and government. The National Steel Pellet Co. and Minntac are looking at using ported kilns, which would reduce energy consumption significantly. Cleveland Cliffs, EVTAC, Northshore Mining and Minnesota Iron and Steel are all looking at building value-added plants. One such project that received attention among the attendees was Minnesota Iron and Steel&apos;s proposed $1.2 billion combined mine, taconite plant, direct reduced iron facility and steel production facility. If the operation is built, it would produce about 3.4 Mt/a (3.39 million ltpy) of direct-reduced iron pellets. Financing is pending. An announcement is expected in the fall of 1998. The pellets, containing 70% iron, would be processed into steel in electric arc furnaces. The steel produced would then be processed into hot-rolled coil, which is used by the appliance and automobile industries. The keynote addresses and technical sessions focused on these issues as well as on environmental issues.

GENERAL DESCRIPTION The Granduc mine is situated on the west side of Granduc Mountain in the Leduc River area of north¬west British Columbia about 51 km (32 miles) north¬east of the town of Stewart. Entry is by means of a 16.6-km (10.3-mile) long haulage adit from the concentrator site at Tide Lake. The principal ore mineral is chalcopyrite. Ore mineralization varies from dis¬seminated to irregular semimassive stringers generally associated with highly folded and sheared biotite-rich sections of metasediments. The ore bodies vary in width from 3.6 m (12 ft) to over 18 m (60 ft) in a zone some 800 m (2600 ft) in length dipping at an average of 75° to the west and plunging steeply to the south. Capping varies in thickness from 0 to over 300 m (1000 ft). SELECTION OF MINING METHOD In the early stages of planning the primary require¬ments to be met by the mining method were: (1) suit¬ability to high output and productivity, (2) adaptability to mechanization in order to minimize operating costs, and (3) minimization of the costs and the development period for preproduction. Considering these, the selection of a mining method was narrowed to a choice be¬tween sublevel long-hole stoping or sublevel caving. A method utilizing backfill was ruled out as uneconomical, especially since mill tailings would not be readily available. At the time, the following facts about the ore body were recognized: (1) the average width of the ore body was 12 m (40 ft), (2) 30% of the stoping blocks were in areas of 6 m (20 ft) or less in width; (3) in many cases, ore zones were located in parallel lenses or were irregular in shape; (4) major faults were present in the hanging wall close to the ore, with minor faults within the different ore zones; and (5) the ore itself was lami¬nated with fractures and jointing crossing such bedding planes. Considering these factors, the two stoping meth¬ods were compared. Sublevel Open Stoping The characteristics of sublevel open stoping are: 1) It is generally not used for widths below 6 m (20 ft) since the ratio of waste development increases as level intervals are reduced to insure good control of long-hole drilling. 2) This method is used where ground is relatively competent. Otherwise more pillar support is required, increasing ore losses or mining costs with pillar recovery. 3) The method is not easily adaptable to parallel ore zones separated by relatively narrow waste bands. 4) Close control of pillar and stope design will per¬mit some degree of dilution control. Sublevel Caving Sublevel caving is characterized by the following: 1) The method can be used for a variety of ore widths, recognizing that 3 m (10 ft) in width may be an economical minimum. 2) It is particularly favorable where wall rock is weak. 3) The method has flexibility so that irregular ore bodies or parallel lenses can be mined. 4) The need to leave pillars for support is eliminated 5) Dilution and tonnage recovery are interrelated. With concern about the stability of the hanging wall and the geometry of the ore bodies, there was a growing favor to choose the sublevel caving method. However, this method was relatively new to Canadian mining practice. Teams were sent to Sweden to tour mines using sublevel caving and to study their methods and any extraction and dilution problems. The objective was to develop cost and performance data and ore recovery grades and tonnages for feasibility comparisons. Next, detailed mine plans were developed covering a three-year period using sublevel caving and sublevel open stoping. Extensive analyses of the development and production costs for each method were made. With sublevel caving, ore losses of 10% with a 20% dilution rate were used. The same ore loss was estimated for sublevel open stoping with dilution varying from 11 to 15%. As a result of these studies, the decision was made to use sublevel caving partly because slightly lower op¬erating costs, together with higher productivity, offset the adverse effects of higher dilution; and partly be¬cause, at the start, there would be less risk in being able to handle the ground, and the method offered more flexi¬bility. Open stoping was not ruled out for testing at a later date. It was recognized that some other method of mining would be required for mining the ore extensions below the glacier, where surface subsidence must be avoided. During the operating life of the mine, open stoping was tested in narrow width ore zones and found un¬satisfactory due to wall failure. A cut-and-fill stope, utilizing run-of-mine waste from development, was also operated on a trial basis. A sequence was finally estab¬lished that permitted ground control; however, produc¬tivity needed considerable improvement in order for open stoping to be considered as a sole alternative for mining below the main haulage level. At the termination of operations in June 1978 over 13 000 000 t (14,500,000 st) had been extracted from above the main haulage level at production rates varying from 3270 to 7250 t/d (4000 to 8000 stpd). Sublevel Caving Methods Two basic methods were used, transverse and longi¬tudinal. The transverse method was used mainly in the upper C ore body in widths greater than 18 m (60 ft), and occasionally as an alternative to the longitudinal method in localized areas where strike faulting inter¬fered with normal development. The main goal of this paper is to present readers with recommendations for choosing coaxial cables appropriate for mining applications of Time Domain Ref 1 ectometry (TDR) to monitor rock mass movements. Prior to discussing the recommendations, mining applications are illustrated with examples and the operating principle of TDR is discussed briefly. Items that affect the result of the monitoring system performance include the coaxial cable selected, the grouting material used, and the installation procedure.
