The US Bureau of Mines investigated the fundamental aspects of shear-flocculation using a rapid, in-situ particle size analyzer. Silica was stirred in the presence of an aliphatic amine to determine the effects of collector coverage, stirring speed and solids concentration on the kinetics of shear-flocculation. The results showed that shear flocculation is a two-stage process. In the first stage, which occurs during the first 1-2 min. of the reaction, the mean particle size increases rapidly, and in the second stage, an equilibrium is set up between the rates of floc growth and floc decay. Collector dosage affected the position of the equilibrium by altering the number of surface sites for particle-particle attachment. A minimum stirring speed was necessary for shear flocculation, which was dependent on solids concentration and collector dosage. This stirring speed was the minimum necessary for particles to overcome the electrostatic energy barrier, and that results in keeping the conditioned particles dispersed. Larger particles flocculated more rapidly. At very high stirring speeds, large flocs became unstable, resulting in a narrowed particle size distribution in the slurry.

This paper is concerned with studying the dewatering behavior of three samples of iron ore products. The objective is to improve the industrial filtration performance by taking into account the laboratory results. Mineral samples came from the Iron Ore Quadrangle in the state of Minas Gerais, Brazil. These samples represent products from the industrial processing of hematitic ores. The samples have almost the same chemical and mineralogical compositions, but they have different size distributions and different specific surface areas. The filtration tests were performed using a modified Büchner funnel apparatus. The results indicate that size distribution and specific surface area have significant influences on dewatering behavior. For Sample 1, the addition of flocculant and/or surfactant was not essential to improving filtration performance. For Sample 3, the cake porosity and the cake thickness were influenced by the addition of the flocculant. On the other hand, the simultaneous addition of flocculant/surfactant decreased the cake formation time and reduced the cake moisture. For Samples 2 and 3, it was also observed that the industrial operation could be improved by taking into account these laboratory results. The Akjoujt Project is operated by MORAK SA, a company incorporated in the Islamic Republic of Mauritania. MORAK is jointly owned by General Gold International SA (A wholly owned subsidiary of General Gold Resources NL.), SAMIN, and the International Finance Corporation. The project was devel­oped to treat approximately 2.1 million tonnes of TORCO (Treatment of Refractory Copper Ores) tailings containing an average 3.2gAu/t, and 0.75%Cu/t. The process involves the use of ammoniacal cyanidation for gold extraction, and conventional carbon adsorption, and eventual desorption, of gold values. This is believed to be only the second commercial application of this leach chemistry in the world. The other being a small vat leach operation on the Paris Mine Dumps. (This operation was described by Mr M Ruane in a paper to a previous Randol Forum.) Initial work on the process, and the Akjoujt process design assumed that the reaction involved was anaerobic. This paper describes the operating experience, plant trial, and eventual installation which has lead MORAK to the conclusion that the process is not anaerobic, but requires oxygen, or an oxidant to proceed.

Like Russia and Ukraine, Kazakhstan is one of a few former Soviet republics well-endowed in mineral and energy resources (Fig. 1). Kazakhstan is the second largest newly independent Commonwealth state. It possesses major fuel and power centers, including 20 electric power facilities that operate on the more than 300 kt (330,000 st) of coal extracted daily. These power stations supply Central Asia, the Urals and Western Siberia with much needed electricity. Kazakhstan plays a critical role in Central Asia as it serves as both the regions' economic and political hubs. While Kazakhstan already contains a robust and diversified minerals industry, the government is actively pursuing foreign investment to boost production capacity and improve efficiencies in operations. A primary objective of the Kazak government is the expansion of metal processing facilities to improve the country's long-term export potential. Since 1991, international mining companies have found the investment climate of Kazakhstan relatively favorable. This is due to tremendous efforts by government officials to create sufficient investment legislation and a national minerals policy, while eliminating bureaucratic bottlenecks common to most other former Soviet republics.

Following the last Cholera Epidemic in 1872, resulting in approximately 400 deaths, the City Council of Munich decided to re¬place the former water supply system within the city limits by tapping new water supply areas outside of the city. Since 1883 Munich has been obtaining its water from the Mangfall River catchment located some 35 km to the south. Its most distinguishing characte¬ristics are as follows: 1) the water is free-flowing, i.e., a pumping system is not required as the catchment area is 100 m higher than the city; 2) the water does not normally have to be treated, meaning "spring fresh" tap water. On a daily basis, 300,000 m3 of water flow through the more than 100 year old pipes, accounting for 70% of the city's daily need. There was originally no requirement of a water tight system as strategically installed drain pipes prevented the build-up of exter¬nal water pressure on the lining. As the qua¬lity of today's water has become significant¬ly worse, the tunnels are now in dire need of restoration or replacement.

INTRODUCTION Use of air-cooling or refrigeration equipment in underground mines is needed when conventional ventila¬tion techniques do not maintain acceptable environ¬mental temperatures in working areas. Because refrig¬eration can be very expensive, it should be implemented only after all possible and practical steps have been taken to eliminate or reduce heat sources in the mine. As an example, to prevent the main ventilation fans from contributing heat to mine air, they should be located in the air return and not in the air intake. It is particularly important to prevent any direct contact between hot water and ventilation air, especially in mines which encounter large flows of hot fissure water. Any water hotter than the prevailing wet-bulb temperature of the ambient air must be removed by pipes located as close as possible to the water source. This hot water must not be allowed free contact with the incoming ventilation air at any time during the water's passage out of the mine. Although insulation of the pipes carrying the hot water is seldom necessary, direct contact between the air and the water must be prevented so the warm water cannot evaporate. REVIEW OF COOLING PRACTICES Spot Coolers vs. Centralized Refrigeration To eliminate a few specific hot places in an otherwise cool mine, it is possible to use devices known as "spot coolers." A typical spot cooler that uses chilled water is shown in Fig. 1. These devices consist of self-contained refrigeration units that are often mounted on rail cars for haulage to hot spots. The cooling capacities of such spot coolers usually are limited to about 100 kW or 30 "refrigeration tons." A refrigeration ton represents a cooling rate that produces 1.0 st of ice in 24 hr; that is a cooling rate of 3.517 kW (200 Btu per min). Typically, the electric-power consumption to drive the compressor motor of the refrigeration plant in mines is 1.0 kW per refrigeration ton, corresponding to a coefficient of per¬formance of about 3.5. The principal difference between spot coolers and centralized refrigeration plants is the method of re¬jecting heat from the refrigeration system. Centralized refrigeration plants always discharge heat into the reject or return airflow of the mine; often that is the primary influence in selecting the location for the underground refrigeration plant. Heat from spot coolers usually is rejected into drain water or into air that is not flowing to the location requiring the cooling. As a result, spot coolers remove heat from troublesome hot spots in the mine, injecting that heat-plus the electrical energy used by the cooling unit itself-into other working areas where the ambient conditions are cooler. In effect, this is "robbing Peter to pay Paul." In deep, extensive mines, spot coolers usually pro¬vide only temporary and, over the long term, expensive solutions to localized cooling problems. Centralized re¬frigeration plants are preferred for such mines, with cooling distributed throughout the mine as required. Fig. 2 illustrates a typical underground centralized re¬frigeration plant. Centralized plants lend themselves to improved maintenance at reduced costs while offering the economy of size. Refrigeration plants of larger unit sizes have considerably lower initial costs than smaller unit sizes. The remainder of this chapter is devoted to large refrigeration plants, with no further consideration of spot coolers. Cost of Refrigeration Total Cost: The total cost of refrigeration amounts to about $200/kW of cooling per year (1981 US $). This total cost breaks down into approximately three equal parts: 1) Financial charges, which include the interest and amortization on the capital cost of the initial installation, and the cost of necessary underground excavations. 2) Operating and maintenance costs which include the cost of the electric power to drive the refrigeration plant's compressors. 3) Distribution costs which include costs for pump¬ing, insulated piping, and air-to-water heat exchangers. The local cost of electric power, the number of operating months per year, and the method of refrigera¬tion distribution all contribute to the actual costs in¬curred in a given application. However, the variations usually are limited to no more than ±30% of the $200/ kW per year total cost figure. Cost Per Ton: Refrigeration cost per ton of mineral production can be calculated if the annual production tonnage from the refrigerated section of the mine is known. In most cases, this cost will be less than $1 .00/t. However, in deep mines with high rock temperatures, such as those found in South Africa, the total cost of refrigeration can increase to several dollars per ton of broken rock. Introduction Brine reservoirs along the Texas and Louisiana Gulf coasts are currently under study to investigate the technical and economic viability of production wells designed to extract methane gas in solution. The effect of well pressure drawdown on reservoir rock and associated overburden material is important to well performance predictions and the analysis of potential subsidence problems. Consequently a series of compaction tests have been conducted on sandstone and shale cored from a test well drilled near Hitchcock, Texas, in order to determine the variation of mechanical properties to be expected over the producing life of the formation. Previous Work The referenced tests are part of an extended study of geopressured-geothermal reservoir behavior, including compaction (Jogi, Gray, Ashman, and Thompson, 1981 and Jogi, Kalra, Gray, and Thompson, 1981) and creep (Thompson, Jogi, Gray, and Richardson, 1981) tests of reservoir rock and related reservoir performance studies (Rago, Okhuma, Seperhnoori, and Thompson, 1985). Recent work has considered the nonlinear constitutive behavior of sandstone (Fahrenthold and Gray, 1985 and 19861, while additional experimental work is reported here. Geological structure and composition of the Hitchcock field from which the core samples were obtained is discussed by Light (1985). Experimental Procedure Compaction tests were conducted on cylindrical cores, nominally 2.75 inches in length and 2 inches in diameter, with independent control of the axial, confining, and pore pressures. Axial and radial deformation of the samples were measured in tests over a range of effective stress states expected to develop over the reservoir lifetime. The term effective stress as used here refers to the algebraic difference of the total stress and pore pressure, with compression taken as positive. Three types of compaction tests were conducted on the sandstone. In the uniaxial tests, axial total stress and radial strain were held constant as the pore pressure was reduced, similating one dimensional compaction which may occur during reservoir depletion. In the triaxial tests, radial total stress and pore pressure were held constant as the axial total stress was increased, duplicating conventional rock compaction test procedures. In the pore pressure drawdown tests, axial and radial total stresses were held constant while the pore pressure was reduced, in order to investigate differences in sample response to mechanical and pore pressure loading. Compaction tests were also conducted on shale material obtained from the reservoir overburden. The field coring process provided few consolidated shale sections sufficiently large to allow preparation of samples with the dimensions described above. With additional attrition during sample preparation of this brittle material, ultimate yield of the coring effort was limited. The few available samples were tested in uniaxial and triaxial tests similar to those described above. The use of displacement transducers to measure sample deformation avoided the difficulty of strain gauge installation on this material. Test Results The sandstone and shale both demonstrated nonlinear stress-strain behavior, with hysteresis and residual strain present upon unloading. Polynomial interpolation of the stress-strain curves was used in the calculation of incremental values for the loading and unloading moduli. Figures 1 and 2 show example axial effective stress-axial strain curves for triaxial tests conducted on sandstone and shale samples. The figures plot incremental stress and strain variables, defined as deviations from the state of prestress to which the sample was subjected. The state of prestress was varied between tests in order to investigate material behavior over the entire stress and strain space of interest. Very little information is available concerning the magnetic properties of minerals and only recently has there been any attempt to correlate magnetic susceptibility with varying chemical composition1. The work described here covers a study of the relationship and chemical composition of both the rutile and sphene types of titanium minerals. The relationship between the magnetic susceptibility of three selected mineral specimens and the applied field strength is also presented. Experimental: The equipment and procedures used in this in- vestigation for crushing and cleaning the mineral specimens and for determining the magnetic susceptibilities were the same as that employed by Spokes and Mitchell1. The particle size of-the measured specimens was limited to 270/325 mesh.

Arizona is a sun-belt growth-region where 13 tons of industrial (nonmetallic) minerals is being produced annually per capita. In 19B5, non-fuel mineral production reached $1.532 billion and consisted of metallic ($1.277 billion-84%) and nonmetallic ($253.5 million-16%) earth materials. Sand-and-gravel value was second only to copper. over 90% of the value of nonmetallics is represented by combined sand, gravel, cement, and lime. The remaining less than 10% ($25 million) was attributed mainly to stone, specific volcanic products (cinder, perlite, pumice), gypsum, clays, salt, zeolite, and others. Current interest in industrial-mineral development in Arizona is high, especially in the geologically complex Basin and Range region.

The mineral estate of Arizona's State Trust lands, which are administered by the State Land Department for the benefit of the common schools and 14 other beneficiaries, totals more than 10.5 million acres, or almost 15 percent of the State's entire area. Trust lands exist in all 15 of the State's counties, with the most and least acreage found in Yavapai and Gila Counties, respectively. Revenues derived from the Trust mineral estate include royalties, rentals, and fees. In Fiscal Year 1983-84, these revenues amounted to $4.2 million, or 13.5 percent of all income received by the Trust during this period. Industrial minerals, led by sand and gravel, contributed $1.1 million from 82 active properties.

An exploration program which covered an area of about 17 000 km2(6564 sq miles), was carried out between 1966 and 1969 by the United Nations project named "Mineral Survey of the Azuero Area." The target became Cerro Petaquilla, Province of Colon, Panama. See Fig. 1. Regional exploration led to discoveries of many geochemical anomalies and minor mineralization, but it was only toward the end of the project that a promising target was indicated by a large zone of comer and molybdenum anomalies in stream sediments in a remote 1, area between the Cordillera and the Caribbean coast. Follow-up surveys established the presence of porphyry-type copper mineralization in the area now known as Cerro Petaquilla.

Located in Central Nevada, The Round Mountain Gold deposit has been continuously mined since 1977. Present proven and probable reserves are 226 Mt (250 million short tons) at 1.1 g/t (.032 oz per short ton). The current open pit mining rate of 118 Kt (130,000 short tons) per day is producing 41 Kt (45,000 short tons) per day of ore to be processed by heap leach methods. At this rate, the current reserves provide a 16 year mine life. The high mining rate and strict ore delivery requirements mandate comprehensive and realistic mine planning. The mine planning process is described in three general steps: Deposit Modeling; Mine Design; and, Production Coordination and Support.

Previous XRD work by us (McKee, Renault, Barker; 199Oa, 1990b) showed that by using pressed powder briquettes and a peak deconvolution technique, quartz in perlite can be routinely determined at <0.1 wt. %. In the present report, we discuss two additional methods of standardization: 1) chemical determination of quartz in silicate standards and 2) addition of a large amount of quartz to an unknown mixture. The first method applies the concept of mass balance and is sensitive to the analysis of silica and a monitor element. The second minimizes mixing errors; its equation is non-linear and is derived from the two component case with unequal mass absorption coefficients treated by Klug and Alexander (1974).

The main thrust of this paper covers the design, installation techniques and experience associated with the installation of eleven 1.5 m (4&apos;-11") and three 2.87 m (9&apos;-5") diameter shafts in 15 to 23 meters (50 to 75 ft) of water over 1.6 Km (a mile) out in the Atlantic Ocean. The approach implemented, permits the use of pre-fabricated shaft linings and incorporates a safe dry-tap method for connecting the offshore shafts to tunnels driven blind from deep land shafts over 4.8 Km (3 miles) away. This tunnel-shaft system is a unique venture employed at the Seabrook Nuclear Power Station to meet plant cooling water requirements.

The effluent from the bio-oxidation of arsenopyrite contains high concentrations of iron(III) and arsenic(V), the pH being in the range 1.0-1.3. The use of lime to increase the pH causes the precipitation of calcium sulfate, calcium arsenate and a mixture of solids containing calcium, iron and arsenic. The presence of calcium is due to slaked lime encapsulated by the iron arsenate precipitates. These iron arsenate solids are related to known minerals. The use of sodium hydroxide to effect the precipitation of iron and arsenic produces solids which are more stable than those produce by using slaked lime. The use of limewater produces an initial precipitate of calcium arsenate.

1- Importance of Shafts for the Exploration and Extraction of Coal Deposits Coal mining in the Federal Republic of Germany is carried out in a depth between 800 and 1200 m below sea level (Fig. 1). The shortest connections underground in a mine and up to the surface are vertical shafts. Such shafts assume, with ventilation, manriding and the winding of material, the most important functions for the maintenance of mining operations. In the German coal mining industry, a difference is made between the main shafts providing a direct access from the surface to the deposits, and the so-called "blindshafts" which serve as a connection between two or several haulage levels underground. In 1990, the United States became only the second country (after China) to produce more than 900 Mt (1 billion st) of coal in a single year. US production of bituminous and subbituminous coal, lignite and anthracite totaled 933.5 Mt (1.029 billion st) in 1990, 5% more than in 1989. The production gains were largely due to the rebuilding of depleted coal stockpiles by electric utilities and a surge in US coal exports. Domestic coal consumption essentially remained at its 1989 level. A slight increase in electric utility coal consumption was partly offset by a decline in metallurgical coal use. The use of coal in other industries and in the residential-commercial sector remained virtually flat.

The computer program "Spike" is an "expert-rule based system" designed to fulfill two requirements. 1) acquaint unfamiliar personnel with big hole drilling techniques and 2) to stimulate the "old hands" in solving drilling problems. "Spike" will not make anyone a drilling expert The best way to understand a computer program is by example, but first some explanation of an? "expert-rule based system", As the name implies, the program tries to imitate a human expert. Unlike a normal computer program which uses a list of instructions to follow in a set order, a rule-base program has a collection of independent rules without an explicit list of things to do, one after the other. This type of program was mandatory to accommodate the ever changing situations and corrective actions that more accurately duplicate actual drilling operations and the advise of an experienced drilling expert.

The scope of this experimental work was to study the yttrium extraction and stripping behaviour in a solvent extraction system with mono(2-ethylhexyl)2-ethylhexylphosphonic acid (IONQUEST 801) in a chloride system The study was performed for only one contact between organic and aqueous phases The experiments were carried out according to a factorial design. Due to the statistical analysis and its experimental proof, the optimum conditions for maximum yttrium loading into the organic phase of the extraction stage were 16 minutes for time of contact between phases, 980 rpm of stirring intensity and pH=2.3 for the aqueous phase of the sovent extraction system. The optimized experimental conditions by the statistical approach for the stripping stage were: time of contact between phases equal to 20 minutes, 1050 rpm of stirring intensity and 1.75 M HCI into the stripping aqueous solution.

The Detroit River Outfall No. 2. is an effluent water conveyance system linking the Detroit Metropolitan Wastewater Treatment Plant to the Detroit River. The 6.4m (21ft) finished diameter tunnel extends 1,890m (6,200ft) east from the bottom of a 91m(300ft) deep, 9.2m (30ft) diameter drop shaft. At the eastern terminus of the tunnel, six Riser Shafts connect the tunnel to diffuser heads on the riverbed. The tunnel runs through a highly fractured Limestone formation capable of producing high levels of groundwater in?ows and Hydrogen Sul?de gas. Control of this water and gas was a theme which ran through the entire Project’s design and construction. This paper will provide an overview of each portion of the Project’s construction, including the Entrance Shaft, Precast Concrete Segments, TBM Tunnel, Pre-Excavation Grouting Methods, and the Riser Shafts.
