Since the early 1970's, the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) has carried out exploration geophysical research on non-basemetal strategic mineral commodities, including uranium, lithium, gold, potash, and chromite. The chromite study (largely completed) and the potash study (still going on) carried out during the past 4 years have not been aimed at the discovery of new ore reserves, but instead were designed to complement exploration by private mining companies. The USGS has carried out research not normally conducted by these companies, but which can be used by them in their efforts to increase production of strategic minerals. Results of the chromite and potash studies highlight the importance of: 1) a laboratory-research phase (petrophysical and petrographic studies) at the beginning of work on any new commodity; 2) an operative or functional ore-deposition model to serve as a conceptual framework, and the necessity to continually test, refine, and modify it during the study; 3) indirect geologic/geochemical indicators, secondary associations, and the use of multiple physical properties; and 4) the use of a systematic inverse-cost sequential-exploration (i.e. lowest resolution and lowest cost first) strategy to keen the exploration economically reasonable. The keystone to the success of the study is frequent and substantive dialogue among geologists, geophysicists, and geochemists.

(1) A great deal of experimentation has been carried out by the Wet Process Cement Manufacturers in connection with additives which make possible the production of a pumpable slurry at reduced moisture contents. We ourselves have made dozens of tests both at Laramie, Wyoming and Monolith, California. (2) The viscosity or pumpability of a slurry at a definite moisture content and fineness seems to depend on two basic phenomena. One is the physical structure of the raw material itself, which on fine grinding may or may not be excessively hydrophilic (water adsorptive). Usually crystaline or glassy raw materials are non- hydrophilic. The fine grained amorphous raw materials such as shales and clayey limestones very frequently are, however. (3) The second basic phenomenon affecting the hydrophilic tendencies of the raw material is the presence of certain soluble salts, especially gypsum and small amounts of alkalin carbonates or oxides. (4) Various soaps, and phosphates can be used to produce a pumpable slurry of low moisture content when using hydrophilic raw materials as well as can other proprietary materials such as certain long chain carbon compounds. Too frequently however, the price of such additives in conjunction with the amount required prohibits their use in the cement industry.

Introduction In this technical note, pilot-scale tests with two types of gravity concentrators, the Knelson separator (Anon., 1983; Forssberg and Johansson, 1984) and the Mark VIIA Reichert spiral concentrator (Balderson, 1982; Forssberg and Johansson, 1984), are described. The experimental work was concentrated on the relatively untried Knelson separator. The materials tested have different concentration characteristics: one was an artificial ore with excellent liberation characteristics and with a wide difference in density between valuable and gangue minerals; the others include a spiral concentrate containing gold from the gravity circuit of Boliden, Sweden, an old scheelite tailing from Yxsjöberg, Sweden, and an auriferous ore, containing gold, that had not been crushed to full liberation. The latter three materials contained other heavy minerals, e.g. pyrite, that can interfere with concentration. Knelson separator The Knelson separator is a compact centrifugal separator with an active fluidized bed to capture heavy minerals. A centrifugal force equal to or exceeding 50 times the force of gravity acts on the particles. The strong centrifugal force traps the heavier particles in a series of rings located in the concentrator while gangue particles are flushed out (Fig. 1). The particular separator used in the tests has a 15-cm (6-in.) diam bowl and can process between ~70 and ~250 kg/h.

The hydrochemical method, which is based on the separation of aluminium oxide and silicon oxide by the hydrothermal decomposition of aluminosilicates by alkaline solutions in the presence of calcium oxide, can be effectively used for the complex processing of high-silicon aluminium ores. In this case, the silica is bound to a slightly soluble compound: Na20.2Ca0.2Si02•H20 (under the conditions: [&k]= 9, CaO/SiO2 = 1.05, alkali concentration in the solution: over 300 g/l Na20, T = 240...300 °C). If alkaline solutions of 100...150 g/l Na20 concentration are used, Ca0•SiO2•H20 or 2Ca0•Si02.0.5H20 compounds, depending on calcium oxide dosage, are formed at 280...320 °C. New methods for the crystallization of Na20.Al203.2.5H2O from concentrated alkaline solutions rand low-concentration solutions are proposed to isolate aluminium from solutions. The hydrochemical method, which involves no sintering process allows one to decrease the expenditure of heat by a factor of two, to reduce the investment and to exclude the pollution of the ambient air by dust-laden gases. The Advisory Conference on Tunnelling of the OECD, held in Washington, D.C. in June 1970, has established the following definition: "Tunnelling refers to the construction by any method of a covered cavity of predesigned geometry whose final location and use are under the surface, whose cross-sectional area is greater than 2 square metres". (1) The definition makes clear that the term includes all types of underground construction, be it in hard rock, soft ground, under mixed conditions, underwater, etc. Small-sized tunnels in rock therefore constitute but one part of the tunnelling scene. With an ever-growing urbanisation taking place in industrialized as well as developing countries, the demand for small-sized tunnels is, however, rapidly increasing and requires a far-reaching mechanization of excavation and support functions. This trend is accentuated by the fact that small-sized tunnels are far more labor-intensive than large ones, and, with wages raising at a much faster rate than costs for plant and equipment, this will accelerate the introduction of new tunnelling systems. Cut-off grade is one of the most critical parameters affecting project cash flow. Its sensitivity is due to the number of other parameters that are correlated with any change in its value. Changes in cut-off grade, average grade and ore tonnage vary and they in turn can affect such parameters as capital and replacement costs, recovery, life of the project and operating costs. Perhaps one of the best definitions of cut-off grade is that of Taylor (1), "... any grade that, for any specific reason, is used to separate two courses of action, e.g. to mine or to leave, to mill or to dump ... . Obviously the most likely specific reason is one governed by economics, involving the return of investment and sufficient profit to motivate development and mining of the deposit. In this paper the cut-off grade is defined as that mining limit which will maximise the economic return for a projected mining venture. The following brief literature survey indicates that when computing the optimum cut-off grade there is a need to be able to directly compute the Discounted Cash Flow Rate of Return (DCFRR) or Net Present Value (NPV), as economically as possible, while allowing for parameter dependencies and variation in project structure.

INTRODUCTION For the past 25 years, tunnel support requirements have frequently been determined, at least in North American practice, by classifying the rock according to the system proposed by Terzaghi (1), using one or more of the 8 Rock Conditions which he defined, the rock load then being selected within the range given for each Condition. However, there is a lack of published data comparing Terzaghi loads with actual measured rock loads, and it would appear that the degree of conservatism, or otherwise, of the Terzaghi approach is very often unknown. Excavation of 4 large diameter tunnels at the Tarbela Dam Project in Pakistan afforded an opportunity to compare Terzaghi and measured loads, through instrumentation of the steel ribs installed for temporary support, and by classification of the geology exposed during the tunnelling operations. In addition, the deformation of the rock surrounding the tunnels was monitored during excavation by means of borehole extensometers installed prior to the start of tunnelling. This paper describes the tunnel instrumentation and the results obtained therefrom, and relates these results to the Terzaghi load coefficients. The influence of passageway fires on ventilation flows was investigated in three horizontal fire tunnel s: 1. a laboratory-scale fire tunnel network, 2. a small-scale fire-plume tunnel, and 3. a large- scale simulated mine gallery. Wood was used in the first and third tunnel and gas-burners were used in the second one to generate passageway fires. Experimental measurements included gas mass flow rate, velocity, temperature and pressure in the passageways and exhaust fans. The overall and local effects of the fires were investigated by comparing these measurements obtained before and during the fires. Results show that a passageway fire essentially increases the flow resistances of the passageways of a tunnel flow network by virtue of volatile fuel mass injection and high combustion temperatures. The ventilation air flow rate is consequently throttled to lower values than that before the fire. At severe throttling, reverse flow occurs. Conditions for reverse flow are characterized by two Froude numbers based on gas velocity and density upstream of the fire, and height of the passageway. The Froude numbers and the characteristics of the passageway fire are necessary to analyze mine ventilation/fire interaction and to predict mine ventilation patterns during fires.

Fifteen samples of chert from seven localities in Ohio were tested for potential durability and reactivity in concrete. The tests determined are porosity, pore-size distribution, relative degree crystallinity, specific surface area, and degree of dissolution according to the ASTM C289-71, Potential Reactivity of Aggregates, Chemical Methods. The results of these tests were compared with petrographic, electron optical, physical-chemical, and engineering properties of the chert samples. Based on these tests, the important properties that affect the durability and reactivity of chert in concrete were observed to be: (1) porosity, (2) pore-size distribution or pore spectra, (3) relative degree of crystallinity, (4) grain size, (5) specific surface area, (6) impurities, and (7) amount and species of quartz present-all of which are functions of original composition, time (geologic age), depth of burial, tectonics, and diagenesis. Preliminary results of this study indicated that the geologic history and physical-chemical properties of chert vary from one sample to another, and any one or combination of these parameters affect the performance of the chert in concrete. These complex interrelationships are difficult to ascertain; if the performance of the chert in concrete is to be predicted, it is necessary to study in detail this enigmatic material.

The effects of artificial weathering on the mechanical properties of the Loyalhanna sandstone have been investigated. Weathering was simulated in the laboratory by subjecting cylin- drical specimens of rock to alternate cycles of wetting and drying (in distilled water at 2O0C 2 5OC and in an electric oven at 105OC t 1°C, respectively). The total number of cycles was 100 and the geomechanical characteristics of the altered material were determined through uniaxial compressive and indirect tensile ("Brazilian") tests, with the determination of axial and trans- verse strains and monitoring of acoustic emission activity (rate and total event count). Moisture content and weight loss data were collected after each cycle and the mechanical parameters (unconfined strength, indirect tensile strength, young's modulus, Poisson's ratio, permanent set and AE/MS activity) were determined for unweathered specimens and after 10, 20, 50 and 100 cycles of wetting and drying. Hypotheses for the effect of weathering on the geomechanical properties of the Loyalhanna sandstone are proposed as reinforced by petrographic analyses carried out for the different stages of artificial weathering. A methodology for assessing the degree of physical weathering of rocks is proposed based on the number of wetting and drying cycles.

The basic transportation planning process consists of: 1. Inventories and analyses of existing conditions. 2. Estimates of future growth. 3. Determination of future travel demand. 4. Testing alternative systems to satisfy future travel demand. The many modeling techniques used in the transportation planning process are well known, commonly accepted, and thoroughly described in readily available literature. This paper will concentrate on the fourth step of the planning process, specifically the development of alternative systems for testing, and will discuss some of the factors which should be considered during the development of alternative systems. There are many factors which require consideration and which have a bearing on the configuration of alternative test systems. These comments will be limited to the influence of geographic, demographic, geologic, and economic factors. Although addressed separately, the four are to a great extent related and have a significant effect on each other. The objective of examining these factors during the early phases of system planning is to assure that more detailed corridor studies will not be stymied by considerations which could have been anticipated and accommodated at an earlier time. Most oxidized manganiferous silver ores contain manganese associated with silver and are not amenable to conventional silver extraction methods, including direct standard cyanidation techniques. However, it is known that dissolution of the manganese might yield a suitable material from which silver can be recovered by conventional methods. In the segregation process, which involves heating the ore with a small quantity of salt and with a source of reducing agent to 680°C - 800°C, the silver is volatilized, migrates and is reduced to metallic silver particles. Conventional cyanide leaching is applied to the resulting calcine. Laboratory investigations have been conducted on a manganiferous silver ore analyzing 0.02 % Cu, 0.09 % Pb, 0.33 % Zn, 12.55 % Mn and 187 g/ton Ag to study the influence of roasting temperature and time, quantity of salt and quantity of coke on silver extraction by the application of segregation roasting followed by cyanidation. Cyanide leaching tests were carried out at room temperature on the segregated calcines produced by using an alkaline cyanide solution containing 2.0 lb/ton of NaCN at pH 11 for 72 hours. The results indicated that 97.8 % of silver extraction can be attained at 850°C, with 2.0 % salt, 1.0 % Coke and 30 minutes of roasting time.

In order to continue the advancements made during the past two decades in the reduction of the severity of accidents and injuries in underground coal mining, closer attention will have to be paid to the increasing number of accidents resulting in disabling injuries and lost time. With the increased emphasis on safety training reflected in the Federal Mine Safety and Health Amendments Act of 1977 (Public Law 96-1641, and on MSHA's current focus on the application of Job Safety Analysis, it appears that the acquisition, evaluation, and application of accident and incident data will take on an even greater importance. To manage this large amount of information will require a significant commitment of time and attention on the part of mine training departments. A USBM-sponsored research project is currently being completed at Penn State which focuser on the development of a model training program for mining. The program is based on five distinct steps which represent the coupling of a needs assessment with the program implementation. The five steps are: 1) database analysis, 2) workplace observations, 3) identification of trainable problem areas, 4) a library of training resources, and 6) the implementation of the program. In each of these areas, the microcomputer has proven to be a valuable tool for collecting, analyzing, and presenting accident and incident information. This paper will detail the manner in which microcomputers have been fully integrated into the model training program. Examples of applications at existing mines will also be discussed.

This paper is intended to deal with the material handling aspects of fine coal cleaning as applied to a recently built plaint in: southern West Virginia. This plant is processing 160 tons per hour of 1/4" x.0 coal on a two shift basis. Past experience with this very friable low volatile metallurgical coal indicated that its plastometer readings, varied directly with the size and length of time elapsing between mining' and ultimate consumption. Due to the mines location with, respect to its consumers, little could be done to decrease the time element. Studies indicated that the plastometer readings are considerably less in the minus 60 mesh range than that experienced in the plus 60 mesh sizes. Therefore, handling the coal in such a manner as to have the least amount of degradation became extremely important.

A computer program has been developed for use by the mining engineer for analyzing drum-type hoists prior to the modification of an existing system or the designing of a new one. Its use permits the preliminary evaluation of a system before seeking the technical assistance of mine hoist designers and manufacturers. Compatible with an IBM-PC, the user-friendly program accepts a variety of data and can analyze hoisting systems for any balance state. The extensive program can be used to: (1) calculate skip capacity to yield a desired production rate; (2) solve for required drum face width; (3) select a permissible wire rope from a menu of 50 available rope types: (4) estimate total horsepower of the hoist plant; and (5) estimate power cost. An example of the model's use in evaluating a hoisting system will conclude the paper.

Direct Production Costs for Solar Sa 1t approximate the trucking cost for 160 Km. Operations near markets appear unusually attractive at first look. However, many desert operations have been plagued by dust storms yielding salt too high in insolubles for most uses. This paper relates the history of a successful operation in a dust storm area. Saturated brine from the solution mining of LPG storage caverns is evaporated in solar ponds yielding 99.95% sodium chloride (dry basis). Purchased energy is one-eighth that of vacuum pan operations. Production scale tests have proved it works at another desert location using a more complex brine. A new approach for refining soluble salts at ambient temperatures is demonstrated by bench scale and pilot work. Again, savings in purchased energy exceed 80%, even when temperatures are raised to reduce refining time.

The primary reason pigments are used in plastics is to impart a desired color to the plastic. Color is one of the more important assign considerations associated with today's market oriented society. Secondary reasons for adding pigments to plastics include: 1. Improved UV stability 2. Enhancement to selected physical properties 3. Changes in optical properties Pigments may be used at loadings as high as 20% or as low as .001%. Generally the loading levels are between 0.2% and 2.0%. Pigments may be added to the plastic either by the manufacturer of the plastic, or by the user of the plastic. If the customer buys material that is already colored, it is referred to as "pre-colored". If the customer buys uncolored plastic and adds colorants, the process is referred to as "in-house" coloring.

The Paupers Dream Property is located in the northern Boulder Mountains, southwestern Montana, 30 km southwest of Helena. The property is situated in the central portion of the Butte-Helena gold belt, a NE trending lineament marking a zone of recurrent, late-Cretaceous to mid-Tertiary volcanic activity. Geology consists of a plutonic basement of late-Cretaceous quartz monzonite overlain by a pre-volcanic basal conglomerate and a complex sequence of Oligocene rhyolitic volcanics. Gold mineralization occurs in fracture-controlled quartz veins, silicified stockwork, and brecciated shear zones as auriferous pyrite, arsenopyrite, and disseminated free gold. An estimated 60,000 tonnes averaging 2.5 g/t was produced from the Porphyry Dike, Venus, and Paupers Dream Mines on the property. Current drill indicated reserves (May, 19861 are placed at 6,946,000 tonnes averaging 1.45 g/t gold.

Gold mineralization at the Colosseum Mine is submicroscopic and associated with pyrite. Pyrite occurs in breccia clasts, replacing dolomite, in crackle breccia veinlets with traces of quartz, and as disseminations in two small, interconnected intrusive pipe complexes of rhyolitic felsite and breccias of felsite and wall/country rock. Breccia types grade from felsite plus wall rock of Pre-cambrian gneiss to cross-cutting breccias "of felsite, gneiss, and Paleozoic sedimentary rocks that are in contact with the Precambrian gneiss terrane one-quarter mile (40Om) southwest of the Colosseum pipes. Mineable reserves are estimated to be 8 million short tons (7.3 million metric tons) at 0.074 troy ounces of gold per short ton (2.3 g/metric ton) at a cutoff of 0.03 troy ounces of gold per short ton (1.0 g/metric ton).

Laser-induced luminescence and breakdown spectroscopy methods appear to be a good tool for real-time evaluation of dolomite content on moving belt. The distinctive feature for time- resolved luminescence is Dy3+ emission in apatite, which is excited by 251 nm laser light and detected with delay time of 5 ms and gate width of 1 ms. The distinctive features for breakdown spectroscopy are 604 nm line of F and P in apatite and 518 nm line of Mg in dolomite. The representative sampling of more than 200 pebbles has been studied by both methods. By luminescence method 100% of dolomite will be identified, while approximately 15-20% of apatite with extremely week Dy3+ luminescence may be mistakenly counted as dolomite. By breakdown spectroscopy the identification is 100% correct both for dolomite and for apatite.
