Introduction Gravity concentration may be defined as that process where particles of mixed sizes, shapes, and specific gravities are separated from each other by the force of gravity or by centrifugal force. The nature of the process is such that size and shape classification are an inherent part of the process in addition to separation on the basis of specific gravity from whence the process got its name. Mother nature has long practiced this form of mineral concentration by concentrating such heavy and relatively indestructible minerals as gold, platinum, cassiterite, ilmenite, zircon, and diamonds in placer or beach sand deposits. Once freed of their host granitic or other rock through natural weathering processes, these minerals are then subjected to stream or wave action producing a natural classification and concentration of the heavy minerals. Gravity concentration dates back to antiquity and was certainly the first ore concentration process used when selective mining and hand sorting would no longer suffice to produce the quality of concentrate desired. Forerunners of the present day sluice box and panning techniques were undoubtedly used by the ancient Egyptians on the upper Nile to separate gold from stream gravel. By the second century BC the extraction of gold from veins in quartz was well detailed by Agatharchides, but there is evidence that gold was brought into Egypt from the south as early as the XI1 Dynasty (~1900 BC).1 Most assuredly gravity concentration devices were used during the later Bronze Age to separate the heavier tin and copper minerals from their lighter gangue minerals. The Athenians used an elementary form of Rowing film concentration at their lead-silver mines at Laurium,2 and elementary jigging using wicker baskets was also probably developed at this time. Agricola's famous treatise De Re Metallica3 demonstrates that by the 16th century gravity concentration technology was well advanced and a large number of devices had been developed. Chinese

To improve coal flotation Bethlehem Steel Corporation's Research Department has been working on a number of related problems based on both physical and chemical factors. The ideal is of course full understanding of the interrelated effects of both sets of factors. However, detailed studies5 of each physical factor have produced immediately usable results in commercial coal flotation and are providing the bas is for our current work on the effect of chemical factors. Since these detailed studies provided the basis for the present investigation of froth sprinkling, their key results are highlighted here. For example, for a highly floatable bituminous coal, particle floatability was shown to be directly related to the percentage of coal surface available for bubble attachment and inversely related to particle mass. The data also underscored that in a given size range the addition of mineral matter to a particle makes flotation more difficult both by adding to the mass of the particle and by decreasing the amount of coal surface available for bubble attachment. Size also affects particle floatability in that as the size of particles of a given specific gravity increases, mass increases and the ratio between coal surface area and mass of the particle decreases. Flotation tests showed that any recovery of the coarsest particles in a coal feed is accompanied by progressively higher recovery of finer and finer particles. Consequently, fine high-specific-gravity particles are recovered with the coarse good coal. As a result, when the entire 14M x 0 size range is processed by froth flotation, the good coarse coal is contaminated with high-specific-gravity fines. It is the small quantities of these fines that must be rejected from the froth product if flotation efficiency is to be increased above its present level.

Gold is commonly associated with copper minerals, particu­larly in the more geologically recent rocks of Northern Australia, Chile and the Pacific Rim. Traditionally, oxidised copper-gold ores are selectively mined and processed for gold by cyanidation, ensuring that levels of reactive copper in the ore are kept low to minimise cyanide consumption; whilst sulphide copper-gold ores are floated and gold is ultimately recovered as the by-product from copper smelting and refining (La Brooy, 1992). Very few process­ing options exist for treating copper ores which cannot be selec­tively mined or floated, and for treating floation tailings which often contain significant gold (Muir et.al.,1989). The ammonia-cyanide leach system stands out as a unique method of selectively extracting gold without copper using economic levels of cyanide (1-2 kg/t NaCN) and ammonia (1-5 kg/t). Although first patented in 1904, it proved difficult to control and predict per formance with different ores. However, recent research and development in Western Australia by Ruane (1991), Hayes and Corrans (1992), La Brooy et.al.(1991), Muir et.al.(1993), Muir and La Brooy (1993), has led to an under­standing of the mechanism, and the commercialisation of the process at the Paris Dump (W.A.), Akjoujt (Mauritania), and in the Eastern Transvaal (Laxen,1994). Efforts are now underway to pilot and develop a tailings treatment plant at Telfer following successful laboratory trials. To date, process optimisation has relied on trial and error and large numbers of tests covering a range of conditions. Thus the results are specific to the ore. At Murdoch University, process optimisation is now focused on measuring and control­ ling Eh, pH, NH3 [Cu(II)], and Cu-CN species at the optimum levels identified from the recent mechanistic studies. In this way, the optimum composition required to process any ore should be readily established and maintained.

Bacterial degasification of methane and conventional methane drainage for generation of power have become accepted practice. Comparative economies of both the techniques have been described. Authors have discussed an alternative technique, involving complete methane biocycle. The first stage of the entire process involves gasification of coal using a consortia of bacteria to generate methane. The generated methane has been proposed to be pumped,as in conventional methane drainage. Technique described is basically similar to underground coal gasification, with the difference that in place of coal combustion, degradation of coal to lower molecular weight compounds by one set of bacteria and then methanogenesis by methanogens, producing methane have been described. Brief account of communities of bacteria that may be employed have been dealt with. Three arguments in favour of proposed technology as an alternative to conventional coal mining are: 1.Total elimination of hazardous operation. 2.Availability of power plants based on methane drainage, assuring comparative economies. 3.Possibility of utilisation of fuel cell technology for power generation giving higher efficiency. All the three phases of complete blocycle viz (1) methane generation from coal (ii) conversion of methane to hydrogen and oxygen (iii) conversion of products so obtained to methane, thereby completing the cycle have been discussed. INTRODUCTION Drainage of methane by conventional pumping process (Boxho,et.al.,1980) not only is helpful in maintaining safe extraction of coal, but with utilisation of extracted gas for power generation, also helps in over all economy of coal mining. This is gradually becoming standard practice for mining of coal in highly gassy mines. An alternative technique (Thakur et. al., 1991) of bacterial degasification of coal seams is also gradually gaining ground. The bye products of this process that is carbondioxide and water, do not contribute towards economy of coal extraction process. However the technique has its own advantage particularly in goaf area for avoiding fire hazard and drainage of methane from coal seams prior to initiation of mining operation. Either of these techniques could be applied in specific situations with success.

This paper describes the development of a trim blast design to improve the stability of a final pit wall. Description is given of the effects of rock characteristics, rock type, and pit plans on the blast design. Currently, six benches have been mined with trim blasting. A more stable final wall has resulted and the successful program has reduced mining costs over an extended time period. Low cost blast monitoring and field observation were used to determine peak particle velocity and blast damage. Using criteria developed from this relationship, trim blasts were designed and evaluated.

A laboratory study of dense-medium cycloning with Redstone seam coal has been conducted. The investigation was performed using a 203 mm (8 inch) Heyl-Patterson dense-medium cyclone. Two underflow orifices of 31.8 mm (1.25 inch) and 44.5 mm (1.75 inch) in diam were used. The effects of feed pressure and particle size were determined on the cycloning performance. In addition, the cyclone performances with coal-rich and refuse-rich samples were also investigated. The results of the experiments were analyzed using basic hydrodynamic principles. The increase in the feed pressure increases the specific gravity of separation (defined as the specific gravity of a particle which has an equal chance of reporting to either the overflow or underfow) for both underfow orifices. The specific gravity of separation increases as the particle size decreases with the smaller underflow orifice. However, an opposite relationship has been observed with the larger under flow orifice. The separation becomes sharper with the smaller under flow orifice than with the larger underflow orifice especially for fine material. Also, the separation becomes sharper with an increased feed pressure for a coal-rich sample. However, this effect is less significant for a refuse-rich sample. This means that a high feed pressure is required for a coal-rich sample to maintain a good separation. It also means that applying a high feed pressure provides a good separation regardless of the type of feed coal in terms of ash content in the solid.

Current approaches to reclaiming acid generating tailings include permanent water cover or encapsulation with various synthetic liners and/or clay. Although these methods can be effective, some ongoing maintenance will be required in perpetuity to ensure that water levels are adequately maintained or that the integrity of any capping system is protected. The successful creation of wetlands in tailings basins offers the possibility of creating a stable environment for the tailings with minimal maintenance. Acid-generating tailings from a massive zinc sulfide deposit in Winston Lake, Ontario, were placed in small cylindrical tanks to examine the feasibility and effectiveness of creating wetlands and mitigating acid and metal release. Two uncovered controls were established in addition to the five treatments, which were done in duplicate. Each wetland tank was 117 cm in diameter and contained 6 1 cm of tailings. Treatments included 61 cm cover of wetland soil, 61 cm of glacial till, 61 cm of tailings, and two tanks with 71 cm of water. One of the water covers included the aquatic macrophytes: Elodea canadensis, Potamegeton sp., and Ceratophyllum demersum. Cattails (Typha latifolia) were planted in the plots with substrate cover, and the initial water level was set at ten centimeters. The pH within the tailings in the treated tanks generally ranged between 6.0 and 6.5 and zinc concentration ranged from 0.02 to 0.1 mg/L. The drainage from the controls had an average pH of 3.3, and 7,700 mg/L of zinc.

INTRODUCTION The Laurens Street section of the Northwest Line of the Baltimore Region Rapid Transit System, located along Pennsylvania Avenue between Pitcher Street and North Avenue is situated in material which cannot be definitely categorized as soil or rock. However, in the area of residual soils in which these tunnels were constructed, considerable attention was required to determine the character of the ground so that the designers and the constructors could properly evaluate the behavior of the ground and plan their respective efforts accordingly. The Laurens Street sections structures consist of twin rock tunnels, station structure, traction power substation, vent shafts at both ends of the station, the midline vent shaft, and the twin mixed-face tunnels. This paper concentrates on the mixed-face tunnels which extend from Station 99+67.03 (O.B.) to Station 102+49.00 (O.B.) at the southern end of the section. Since the completion of the design of this project, the Laurens Street section has been renamed the Upton Station. (See Figures 1 and 2). SUBSURFACE INVESTIGATIONS At early stages, three preliminary studies were performed by the General Soils Consultant (Ref. 1, 2, & 3). The purpose of the first study was to ascertain the generalized geological and subsurface conditions which might be encountered in the region. No borings were performed for this study. The extensive use of heavy-duty diesel engines in underground mines has raised concerns about the potential adverse health effects to miners exposed to diesel particulate matter (DPM) which contains mutagenic and carcinogenic organic compounds. The purpose of this study was to compare the levels of DPM, biological activity, and polynuclear aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) attributable to diesel engines in underground coal mines and similar data collected in engine laboratory facilities to assess whether laboratory data could be used to predict in-mine levels of diesel emissions. Mean in-mine DPM and SOF concentrations varied from 0.90 to 1.9 mg/m3 and 0.08 to 0.40 mg/m3, respectively. DPM-associated mutagenicity (mean) levels at two of the mines varied from 400 to 970 revertants/m3. Concentations of three PAH differed by up to four-fold between two of the mines, largely reflecting differences in DPM and SOF levels. The laboratory raw exhaust data were divided by 100 to obtain expected or predicted values for in-mine concentrations. The predicted DPM, SOF, mutagenicity, and PAH values based on laboratory samples were not significantly different from many of the in-mine values. Using a potential in-mine dilution ratio range of 20 to 200:1, virtually all in-mine data fell within the predicted range. Therefore, an estimate of in-mine concentrations can be determined by evaluating laboratory data. This will allow for extrapolations from laboratory tests with particulate emission control devices to assess potential health-related benefits due to their in-mine use.

Lingering effects of the 1990 oil shock that included overbuilding and corporate and individual financial distress caused the Gross Domestic Product to fall slightly to $5.67 billion (US billion = l09). With 254 million people - 697,000 in mining and petroleum - the US has more than 100 million dwelling units and 190 million licensed motor vehicles. New private housing starts fell 15% to one million units. New car production fell 11 % to 5.4 million units. Truck and bus production fell 8% to 3.4 million units. The inflation rate was 3%, while the prime rate of interest was 8.5%. The Producer Price Index (1982 = 100) changed as follows: -fuels and related products and power down 1% to 8l, • metals and metal products down 2% to 120, • chemicals and allied products up 2% to 126, and • non-metallic mineral products up to 2% to 117. Energy Imports of crude and refined petroleum, costing $50 billion, fell 5% to 2.8 billion bbl. Domestic petroleum production rose 1% to 3.6 billion bbl. Petroleum supplied about 39% of US energy, natural gas 24% and coal 22%. The National Energy Strategy was announced in February 1991. Its purpose is to encourage domestic production of fossil fuels and nuclear and renewable energy and to stimulate efficiencies in use. Congress continued to debate the strategy and took no action. Coal production fell 3% to 902 Mt (994 million st). About 60% of that came from surface operations. Seventy-eight percent of the total was used to generate electricity and 3% was coked.

Tunnels are defined as underground passages made without removing the overlying materials. From time immemorial men have driven tunnels for mining purposes. Even today tunnels are the building blocks for underground mines. The total length of such a network of tunnels in a mine may add up to 10-100 miles! In addition to this, rapid development of vehicular traffic, needs for air raid protection and metropolitan traffic problems have given a great impetus to underground tunnel construction. But for the successful drivage of any tunnel an adequate air environment has always been and remains an essential prerequisite. This is particularly true for tunnels in mines which are driven in gas bearing strata often at a substantial depth from the surface. An adequate air environment is designed to promote the health, safety and comfort of workers which results in greater productivity and efficiency. Its legal definition varies from country to country but, in general, it means the provision of sufficient circulating air, often at specified velocities, to maintain: (i) at least 19% oxygen in the working areas (ii) Concentration of pollutants, e.g., methane, carbon monoxide, respirable dust, etc. below specified limits. Table 1 shows the maximum allowable concentrations for some of these pollutants.1 (iii) Temperature and relative humidity below specified limits. Ventilation of tunnels in mines assumes ever. greater importance today because of increased mechanization and concentration of output which leads to higher rate of production of inflammable gases and respirable dust. Fine coal flotation using gaseous carbon dioxide has demonstrated the potential for producing superclean coal. The success of this new flotation .procedure is attributed to the coal's high adsorption potential for CO2. To understand the nature of gas-phase CO2 adsorption at the coal surface, in-situ FTIR spectroscopy in a controlled-environment chamber with an ultravacuum sys-tem has been used and the results are discussed in view of other experimental results from differential scanning calorimetry. It has been found that specifically adsorbed CO2 molecules at the coal surface are polarized and have a characteristic doublet at 2336 and 2361 cm-1. Two adsorption states have been proposed to account for the doublet observed from in-situ FTIR spectroscopy measurements. It is believed that the band at 2336 cm-1 originates from the activated site adsorption of CO2 and that the band at 2361 cm-1 arises due to the molecular aggregation of CO2 within the coal pores.

Over the past 12 years, Exxon Coal U.S.A., Inc. has shipped over 150 million tons of coal from two mines, Rawhide and Caballo, located in the Gillette, Wyoming, area. These mines are operated by The Carter Mining Company, a division of Exxon Coal. Shipments have moved to more than 25 electric utility plants in the west, midwest, southwest, and south. The customer plants have represented a wide variety of configurations, sizes. design criteria, emission standards, and operations in different parts of the country. We have learned a great deal about the performance of Gillette area coals in utility power plants during this period. This paper covers some of the highlights of Exxon's experience with these coals in customer plants. I will focus specifically on things mining engineers may be able to do to make the product better for the customer's use.

Distribution coefficients of gold and silver between matte and slag during the pyrometallurgical treatment of nickel-copper sulfide concentrates were evaluated as a function of matte and slag compositions in the temperature range of 1,250oC to 1,300oC. It was observed that the composition of the matte phase, including matte grade and copper content in the matte, significantly affected the distribution behavior of gold and silver in the matte-slag system. Both gold and silver preferentially concentrated in the matte phase as the matte grade increased With increasing temperature and copper content in the matte, the distribution coefficients of silver increased, while the gold distribution coefficients decreased. It was also, found that slag additives such as CaO, MgO, and A12O3 caused a significant decrease in the solubility of both gold and silver in silica-saturated iron silicate slag. An activity coefficient of gold in matte was derived from the experimenta1 results.

The Yarnell gold deposit is located 1.5 km (1 mile) south of Yarnell in the Weaver mining district of Yavapai County, AZ (Fig. 1). Elevations within the area of the deposit range from 1400 to 1560 m (4590 to 5120 ft). Historic production, principally from quartz veins localized along the Yarnell fault, was about 200 kt (220,000 st) at an average grade of 6.9 to 10.3 g/t (0.2 to 0.3 oz/st) gold. The federal government closed the mine in 1942 due to World War II. Norgold Resources Inc. leased the property in 1988 and joint ventured it with Asarco the same year. Asarco drilled 7822 m (25,660 ft) in 96 reverse circulation and four diamond drill holes and identified 8 t (260,000 oz) gold reserve. IBema Gold Inc. acquired Norgold in 1991 and is currently permitting the project. Production is expected to begin within the next two years

The annual consumption of fluorspar in the United States, in the last 10 years has doubled. In 1971, when 1,344,742 tons were consumed, almost 45 percent of this amount was used in the production of steel and nearly 50 percent was consumed in the manufacture of hydrofluoric acid. Of the hydrofluoric acid produced, about one-third was used in the manufacture of aluminum electrolytes for production of primary aluminum metal and the balance was consumed in the manufacture of a variety of fluorocarbons and other chemicals. A small amount of fluorspar, constituting less than five percent of total consumption, was used in the foundry industry, and in the manufacture of glass, enamel, cement and other products. It is apparent that a continuing supply of fluorspar will be required to meet the demands for these vital metals and chemicals in our expanding industrial society. Domestic fluorspar production meets only approximately 20 percent of our needs. Hence, it is essential that the United States maintain a healthy domestic fluorspar industry in order to have adequate domestic reserves available at times of emergency and to protect this country from becoming solely dependent on foreign sources for this strategic commodity.

The Inco process can be retrofitted into a typical heap operation with minimum capital. Capital cost for a mid to large size heap would be less than 1 cent/ton. Operating costs are typically in the order of 8 cents/ton. Ammonium bisulphite is the preferred reagent. This article deals with the extensive geotechnical soil and bedrock mapping system maintained in the Geotechnical Office of the City of Helsinki since 1955.Soil maps have been prepared to scales of 1:500,1:2000 and 1:10 000, and most recently in 1978 a new type of bedrock map was printed to a scale of 1:10 000, which covers the whole city area and particularly serves rock tunnel construction. A map showing the types of foundation building in the central city area, which will also serve underground construction activities, is currently being prepared. Since the geotechnical mapping system has been well received in Helsinki and the drawing of similar maps has also been undertaken in other Finnish towns, this mapping method is believed to be of interest to foundation engineers and tunnel constructors elsewhere too. THE GEOTECHNICAL CONDITIONS IN HELSINKI The geological structure of Helsinki, and of all Finland, presents two types clearly differing in character and age; bedrock and soil. The solid bedrock is Precambrian, while the soil dates from the Pleistocene Age and has mainly been deposited during and after the Ice Age. Thus the history of Helsinki only displays very old and very young formations, but nothing in between. The ground level in Helsinki is +62 at its highest and the sea bottom close to shore is -15 at its deepest. The deepest rockhead has been found to lie at the -70 level.

This report concerns a seismic geophysical exploration program which was conducted 3 miles southeast of the Carlin Mine, in Lander County, about 18 miles north of Carlin, Nevada. A twelve-fold reflection seismic line was executed over a one-mile traverse in section 32, Township 35 North, Range 51 East. This study is part of an exploration pro- gram directed toward finding Carlin-type gold deposits which are concealed under younger alluvium and volcanics. The exploration objectives of this program are as follows: 1) measure the thickness of the younger, sedimentary and volcanic deposits which overlie the "productive rock sequence", 2) delineate the Roberts Mountains thrust fault, 3) investigate the origin of the geochemical anomalies present in the western portion of section 32.

The Copper Creek area, part of the Bunker Hill District, Pinal County, Arizona, lies within the southwest porphyry copper province of North America at the intersection of a northwest trend and an east-northeast trend of Laramide porphyry copper deposits. The Copper Creek area has been mined and explored for copper and molybdenum since the early 1900?s. The majority of this work focused on the more than 400 surface exposed breccia bodies. In the 1960 to 1970?s deeper drilling discovered a deep porphyry copper-like setting. Redhawk Copper currently has NI 43-101 compliant resources of about 0.652 billion pounds of measured and indicated and 2.745 billion pounds of inferred copper equivalent in breccia hosted and porphyry style deposits. See Figure 1.
