The dielectric properties and flotability of different ranks of Argonne Premium Coal samples are presented. The flotability of different ranks of coal are correlated with the dielectric properties and intrinsic moisture (or bound water) content. Measured dielectric properties of as-received coals and other constituents are incorporated into a mixture equation to calculate the dielectric properties of bound water present in the different ranks of coal. The nature of bound water present in low-rank hydrophilic coals is significantly different from that present in high-rank hydrophobic coals. The water molecules present in low-rank lignite have an oriented dipole-dipole interaction and are tightly bound to the surface. For high-rank coals, the water molecules are not bound to the surface and have a randomly distributed clathrate ice-like structure. Controlled thermal treatment can modify the structural nature of bound water present in low-rank hydrophilic coals and increase their flotability.

Estimating productivity of a walking dragline is of paramount concern to mining engineers and mine planners. Risk based evaluation of the dragline productivity is a valuable tool to estimate the dragline’s long-term availability, to develop preventive maintenance plans and to make future projections about the dragline’s performance. This paper aims to provide mining professionals with an overview of risk assessment methodology for productivity of two walking draglines, Page 736 and Marion 7820, which have been operating in the Tunçbilek openpit coal mine of Turkish Coal Enterprises (TKI) in Turkey. The study encompasses three main stages: (i) acquiring of monthly maintenance records, operating hours, mechanical and electrical failure hours between 1998 and 2009; (ii) reliability modeling using mean time between failure data and (iii) determining hazard rate and consequences to compute risk associated with dragline productivity. The results showed that that Page 736 (15.29 m3) seemed to be more reliable and less likely to fail when compared with Marion 7820 (30.58 m3). The operating hours without failure range from 41 to 51 hours with 50% reliability.

INTRODUCTION Run-of-mine (ROM) coal generally falls into two major groups: that from underground mining (continuous mining machines) and that from strip mining. Continuous miners produce a finer product and strip mining a coarser product that is crushed to produce the desired size. Further size reduction depends on the proposed use or uses for the coal. For example, for pulverized coal power plants as a rough general rule, the coal is ground or pulverized to 80% less than 200 mesh (0.075 mm) before it is blown into the boiler furnace as a coal-air suspension. For solvent-refined coal processes, the desired size is about <30 mesh (< 0.60 mm); in fluidized bed uses, the coal is typically < 8, in. (< 1.6 mm); for Lurgi pressure gasifiers, the desired size is 1 to 2% in. (25 to 63 mm). Coal preparation plants typically work with a coarse size fraction of 6X 1/14 in. (150X32 mm). The past decades has shown a steady increase in the tonnage of coal cleaned, 1 but it seems probable that the next decades will produce much wider applica- tion of deep coal cleaning before use and that the stages of crushing and pulverization from ROM coal to end use will be integrated with coal cleaning processes. Since different cleaning processes work better with different ranges of coal size and the degree of cleaning possible is intimately connected with the size of coal, a systems design engineer will need as much information as possible concerning the size distributions produced by different types of machines and how these can be modified by different ways of operating the machines. In general, the following questions will be of concern: 1.What type of crusher or grinder is best, or most satisfactory, for reducing a given feed size and type of coal to a desired product size? Frequently, the desired product is smaller than some nominal size, but with as few fines as possible, or the fraction in some size range has to be as high as possible. 2. How big does the machine have to be for a given throughput rate? 3. How much electrical energy (or its equivalent) is required per ton of product? 4. How does the size distribution vary with change in throughput rate, and is a control scheme necessary or desirable? 5. Can the size distribution be readily varied if desired? 6. What is the optimum way to operate a machine in a given system? This section will emphasize certain general principles which guide us in answering these questions. 7.1-STABILITY OF SLOPES IN SOIL AND ROCK ROBERT H. MERRILL 7.1.1-DESIGN ANALYSIS APPROACHES The analyses of slopes in soil or rock can be made through application of soil- or rock-mechanics principles. In most cases, the material in the slope wall can easily be identified as either a soil or a rock. However, there will be instances where, because of unique characteristics, the soil may behave as a rock structure, or vice versa. By necessity, these unique cases must be identified through experience or critical observation by the engineer, because there are no definitive rules clearly establishing the differences. The most important step in a solution to a slope problem is to define it. Normally, once the problem is identified, a solution usually can be found or a reasonable estimate obtained. The design analysis of a slope wall implies an evaluation of the stresses or forces in the wall, and of the ability of the material in the wall to withstand them. Therefore, the factors influencing a design analysis can be divided into two categories: those which influence stresses, and those which influence the ability of the wall to withstand stress. For simplification, the latter is termed the strength of the soil or rock. Perhaps the basic difference between analyses for soils and those for rock is in the identification of the failure surface. Soils generally do not have an identifiable failure plane. However, some soil layers in a slope wall may have different strengths. A soil slope wall may consist of a thin layer of topsoil overlying a thick, uniform clay, or a topsoil over a gravel or other materials. Therefore, the soil generally does not have a potential plane of weakness that can be identified through observation. On the other hand, rocks normally contain planes of weakness in the form of fractures, faults, joints, bedding planes or other discontinuities weaker than the intact rock, which can be found through observation and/or tests upon rock samples. If the failure surface cannot be identified, the principles of soil mechanics should apply because, in soil mechanics, the failure surface usually is assumed. If it can be identified, then the principles of rock mechanics should apply. 7.1.2-ANALYSES OF STRESSES OR FORCES IN SLOPES All existing methods of soil-slope analysis are based upon interpetations of the Coulomb and Coulomb-Navier failure criteria, commonly termed the total-stress 2nd the effective-stress criteria (Sec. 6.1). Commercially mined calcium carbonate is normally found near the surface in the United States. It is nun& either by open pit or underground methods, depending upon its geologic setting. Processing ranges from simple crushing to the more sophisticated ultrafine processes. Intermediate steps are pulverizing, screening, beneficiation, classification, fine and ultrafine grinding, and surface treating. The effect of sample storage in argon and in air on kinetics of oxidation of pyrite from a coal source was studied using accelerated weathering test in laboratory columns. Prior to the weathering tests the samples were crushed, ground, and stored for various time periods in argon and air. The results showed a dramatic difference in the rate of oxidation of the aged samples. The differences were interpreted based on the hypothesis that the aging of pyrite led to the formation of surface coatings which changed with time. The significance of these results in pyrite/reagent interactions in flotation and in evaluating the acid mine drainage potential of pyritic waste materials is discussed.

Two aromatic-type chelating agents, 1,10 phenanthroline (phen) and 8-quinolinol (quin), were tested as specific depressants for magnetite in the cationic silica flotation of magnetic taconite concentrates. Micro and batch flotation tests, along with zeta potential and adsorption measurements were used. In the presence of a cationic collector, dodecylammonium chloride (DAC), the Fe/phen surface chelate electro-statically repelled DAC, and magnetite was depressed. The negatively charged Fe(quin)2(OH)2-on the magnetite surface attracted the cationic collector and made magnetite floatable.

Many coal combustion products (CCPs) have historically been unsuitable for placement as mine backfill because of their physical and geochemical properties and/or regulatory status. However, innovations in paste production and transport of CCPs utilizing the high, fine particle contents of these fine-grained waste materials and their water retention colloidal properties produce a non-segregating, self-cementing material that may be environmentally suitable for placement as mine backfill. Both industry and the regulatory agencies are enthused by the possible cost reductions, both in design and construction of disposal sites, and the reduced environmental impacts of CCP realized by implementation of this new use/disposal technology.

To minimize SO2 emission and the particulate problem during combustion of high sulfur coal fines is to agglomerate these fines in the presence of limestone. At subsequent combustion process, the sulfur in coal is oxidized and reacts with calcined limestone to form calcium sulfate in ash, while the base carbon is converted to clean energy. Seventy percent of sulfur retention can be achieved at Ca/S mole ratio of 3 at a temperature range of 500-400°C. The sulfur fixation in agglomerates involves the complex mass transfer and multiple successive reactions. The rate expressions have been developed to describe the progress of sulfur fixation in the agglomerates during combustion.

"The solvent extraction of cerium(III) and samarium(III) from mixed solutions of all rare earth elements (REEs) except promethium using PC88A (2-ethyl hexyl phosphonic acid mono-2-ethyl hexyl ester), an acidic extractant, was investigated. The effects of aqueous equilibrium pH, various acids (sulfuric acid (H2 SO4 ), hydrochloric acid (HCl) and nitric acid (HNO3 )), initial metal ion concentration and extractant concentration on the solvent extraction of Ce(III) and Sm(III) were systematically studied. From the experimental results, HNO3 and HCl were found to be the preferred aqueous media for the solvent extraction of both Sm(III) and Ce(III). The most promising experimental conditions of pH, PC88A concentration and metal ion concentration were identified for the extraction of Ce(III) and Sm(III). Separation results showed that H2 SO4 at pH 2 provided the best separation between Sm(III) and Ce(III). IntroductionIn recent years, demand for rare earth elements (REEs) has increased significantly because of their many commercial applications. REEs have especially important high-tech applications owing to their unique physical and chemical properties, and they are used in a wide range of areas such as catalysts, ceramics, magnets, lasers, glass, neutron absorption and alloys. As REEs have very similar physicochemical properties, their separation and purification from each other is challenging and gaining significant interest. Samarium (Sm) and cerium (Ce) are found in different REE minerals, including bastnäsite ((Ce,La,Nd(CO3)F), xenotime (YPO4) and monazite ((Ce,La,Nd,Th)PO4) at major production sites in the United States and China, as listed in Table 1 (Bleiwas and Gambogi, 2013). The most common acidic organophosphorous extractants used for REEs extraction and separation are DEHPA (di-(2-ethylhexyl)phosphoric acid), PC88A (2-ethyl hexyl phosphonic acid mono-2-ethyl hexyl ester), Cyanex 272 (bis-2,4,4-trimethylpentyl phosphinic acid) and Cyanex 301 (bis(2,4,4-trimethylpentyl)dithiophosphinic acid) (Sarangi, Reddy and Das, 1999; Surampally et al., 2012; Tian, Jia and Liao, 2013). Out of these extractants, PC88A is known for providing higher separation factors (Acharya, Mishra and Misra, 2015). El-Hefny et al. (2010) investigated the kinetics of the solvent extraction of Sm from chloride media using sodium salt of Cyanex 272 and reported the extracted species to be Sm(OH)A2•2HA. Lee et al. (2005) investigated the solvent extraction of Sm(III) with PC88A and saponified PC88A from chloride solutions and found the stoichiometry of the extraction reactions to be 1.5 with PC88A and 3 with saponified PC88A."

This paper addresses considerations for the use of artificial support of pit walls in surface mines, a new project of the Bureau of Mines. Results to date indicate that a polymer-coated cable with embedded grit could provide good anchorage for stabilizing benches and highwalls, and an electronic method of recording discontinuities in the field is being reviewed and developed for application to mining. The objectives of the work in progress are to define the engineering parameters and evaluate the concepts for artificial supports in order to provide safe working environments when pit slopes are steepened to increase ore recovery and reduce overburden handling.

This paper focuses on the -1/2 mm cleaning at Elk Run Coal. The original circuitry incorporated desliming cyclones. Problems with slimes entrainment in the cyclone underflow (froth cell feed) resulted in poor froth cell selectivity. Laboratory test work led to the installation of high frequency desliming screens. Consequently, great improvement in cell performance was brought about by enhanced desliming with the ability to use split flotation. The modifications resulted in significant improvement in total plant performance and overall yield while maintaining clean coal quality.

Bacterial oxidation of a pyrite/ arsenopyritic gold-ore concentrate was carried out with continuous flow operation in 14 liter (1.4x10-2 m3) mechanically agitated reactors. 02 and C02 uptakes were determined at varying residence times. Bacterial concentrations were measured using a protein assay. A sharp optimum in biooxidation rates was observed with increasing steady-state residence times. Growth of the bacteria and biooxidation of the mineral were both shown to be strongly dependent on dissolved 02 levels in the liquor.

AVAILABLE MACHINES Machines discussed in this section include only rubber tire mounted kerf cutting machines of a self¬propelled electrically powered design. Such machines handle bars up to 4.6 m (15 ft) in length, cutting kerfs of from 115 to 191 mm (4.5 to 7.5 in.). The basic design concept of all machines currently in production is very similar. The chassis features dual driving wheels on the cutter-bar end, fixed directly to the main frame. The steering wheels on the outby end of the frame are articulated in some manner to keep all four wheels on the floor over uneven bottom. Machine power for tramming, and all other functions except powering the cutting chain, is furnished from a pump motor that drives the specific pump or pumps required by a given machine. The cutter chain is driven through a mechanical drive train from a separate electric motor having no duty other than driving the chain. The general arrangement of a cutting machine is shown in Fig. 1; two types of machines, with their specifications are shown in Figs. 2 through 5. A hydraulically powered cable normally is included to eliminate the need for manual cable handling and make this a one-man machine. A bug duster, though optional, is needed for most applications. The bug duster is an hydraulically driven scroll conveyor located directly behind the cutter chain drive sprocket. Its function is to move the cuttings away from the sprocket to prevent them from packing up in this area and consuming a lot of machine power to further pulverize them. Available machines vary from models 610 mm (24 in.) high that can cut horizontally only from 203 mm (8 in.) below ground line to 229 mm (9 in.) above, to machines 1143 mm (45 in.) high that can cut in any plane from 178 mm (7 in.) below the ground line to 3.7 m (12 ft) above it. Most currently manufactured machines fall in the 17 200 to 20 400 kg (38,000 to 45,000 lb) weight range, but can be dis¬assembled for underground installation where weight and size are a problem. Maximum teardown results in all pieces having a weight of 5400 kg (12,000 lb) or less and a size allowing passage through a 1.2 x 2.1-m (4x7-ft) opening. Further reduction in either size or weight of the parts becomes a serious problem. Machines currently being manufactured are avail¬able for use with power supplies of 250 v dc; 500 v dc; 440, 550, or 950 v ac (60 Hz). Also available are machines for use on 415, 500, and 950 v 50 Hz. De¬signs to allow operation on other voltages of either 50 or 60 Hz can be made available without any serious problems. As of September 1977, a typical medium-seam ma¬chine without the extra options needed for unusual conditions, but fully equipped to operate, was selling for about $185,000. With the recent technological advances; Tunnel Boring Machines (TBM) have become a viable economic alternative to drill and blast in hard rock excavation. These machines are finding increasing use in underground mine development due to the potential benefits they offer. The successful application of TBM technology to mining depends on the selection of the most suitable equipment and cutting tools for the rock and ground conditions to be encountered. In addition to required testing and geotechnical investigations, cutterhead design optimization is an integral part of the machine selection to assure a successful application of the machines in a specific project. This paper presents and discusses the back-ground of TBM application in a mining environment and the lessons learned, the process of conducting site investigation and the necessary laboratory testing together with machine selection and performance estimation for TBM use III mine development.

The future phosphate rock deposits in South Florida contain a significant fraction of dolomite. The high MgO content of the rock is undesirable in the production of phosphoric acid. Several flotation schemes have been attempted to separate dolomite from phosphate rock. Alternately, Selective Flocculation process has been suggested to separate dolomite from apatite. A high MgO content rock was simulated by a 30:10:60 synthetic mixture of apatite, dolomite and silica. Single mineral selectivity was observed in the mixed mineral systems apatite-silica and dolomite-silica with Polyacrylic acid (PM) and Poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) flocculants respectively but not realized in apatite-dolomite system with PEO flocculant. Heteroflocculation, suspected to be the major reason for loss in selectivity, was minimized by addition of a Site Blocking Agent (lower molecular weight fraction of PEO). Process parameters such as size reduction schemes, flocculant/SBA dosage, and pH were investigated to achieve the desired separation. The selectivity obtained in binary mixed mineral tests was translated into the ternary mixed mineral system, viz. apatite-dolomite-silica. In this presentation surface chemical characterization of the samples and their flocculation behavior will be discussed.

In situ solution mining of uranium has environ- mental advantages over conventional mining. The leaching of uranium, however, alters the groundwater quality in the aquifer where the mining occurs. Currently, regulations require that the groundwater be restored to approximately its original condition. This paper, a summary of a study funded by the Bureau of Mines, reviews the state of the art in restoring groundwater quality after in situ uranium leaching. Current restoration practices discussed include disposal of liquid wastes in deep disposal wells and evaporation ponds, producing from all wells during restoration, and recirculating water purified in surface plants. Methods for predicting the effectiveness and cost of current techniques are presented. Possible alternative techniques are also described. Two restoration operations are discussed.
