This presentation is about a small company, Industrial Mineral Products, that was formed in 1972 with one product and one customer and by a series of value-added changes avoided disaster and increased sales many times over. The principal of the company stopped by my office in Seattle looking for industrial mineral opportunities in the Northwest. We got together and went through all the minerals in Ladoo's "Industrial Minerals" from Abrasives to Zircon to see if we could find something available on the vast holdings of the Burlington Northern. At that time one of our lessees was operating a silica sand mine near Ravensdale, Washington and indicated that he might be interested in selling out. This sounded interesting to my client and within two weeks the transaction was completed.

A unique machine has been designed for mining narrow veins. The machine, called the NONN, walks on the walls of the stope and carries a boom-mounted hydraulic impact breaker. The concept of walking on the walls allows an existing muck handling system such as LHDs to operate beneath the NOMN. The NOMM has four sets of legs which can be manipulated independently or concurrently to cause the carrier to walk in any direction and to turn sharp corners. The mining rate using the breasting method is targeted to be 25 t/hr.

INTRODUCTION The driving of drifts is a very important aspect of underground mining. It is not unusual for the percent¬age of rock broken during development in a mine using sublevel caving, for example, to be as much as 25% of the total. If one also considers the amount broken for transport, ventilation, and exploration drifts, one can easily understand that the planning and excavation of drifts play a major part in the total economics of the mine (Fig. 1). Increasing mechanization in mining demands larger tunnel areas for transport and mining equipment. With modern machines the hard work involved in using hand¬held pushers is gone, and a better environment is achieved. More rational methods could be used, but much of the experience the working man acquired by working close to the rock face (such as utilizing the natural weak planes in the rock when he placed the drill¬ing holes) has unfortunately been lost. By having sepa¬rate shifts for drilling, loading, and hauling, more atten¬tion has to be placed upon a well-designed drilling pattern. Some reduction in the number of holes required can be achieved with mechanized drilling because of the larger holes that can be produced. On the other hand, it is probably not possible to achieve the same precision as with pneumatic pushers, and it is difficult to utilize the larger holes because these cause more damage to the re¬maining rock. Recently, however, the precision has be¬come very good with the parallel booms and automatic devices for setting the lookout angle (Fig. 2). A larger arch of the drift roof requires a more carefully executed blasting procedure than before in order to prevent rock fall and to insure a sufficiently long stand-up time. In this chapter, empirical relationships that can be used to design an economic and optimal drift blasting design will be presented. The principles of the calcula¬tion method are based upon the earlier work of Langefors and Kihlström (1963) and Gustafsson (1973). COMPARISON OF EXPLOSIVES To provide for the use of various explosives it is necessary to have a basis of comparison. Several meth¬ods have been developed to characterize the strength of an explosive. Some examples are comparison of values given by (1) calculated explosion energies; (2) the ballistic mortar test; (3) the Trauzl lead block test; (4) the brisance test; (5) the weight strength concept; and (6) the underwater test. A review of the evolution of the North American sulfur market's structure serves to dramatize the kinds of changes that the market is undergoing at the present time. In 1970, the U.S. accounted for 23 percent of world sulfur production. This share has not declined dramatically--to 21 percent in 1993--but the U.S. developed into a substantial net importer of sulfur in the past 25 years. U.S. output was based on large deposits of native sulfur in the western part of the Gulf Coast region with production by the Frasch mining process. Producers of Frasch, or on-purpose sulfur, have historically absorbed cyclical fluctuations in sulfur demand. Two major changes in the North American market from that time to now have been the introduction of increasingly large quantities of by-product sulfur from petroleum refining and natural gas processing operations in the U.S. and Canada, and that Canadian producers have become the marginal supply source for U.S. sulfur consumers.

The new regulations for the bituminous coal mining industry, issued by the mining authorities of the Federal Republic of Germany, are aimed at reducing to a feasible minimum any development of the coal workers pneumoconiosis (CWP) by lowering the admissible dust exposure of mine workers. Additional and improved measures of dust suppression and job assignment control *) are required for the purpose In this connection two basically different demands are placed on dust measurements: As far as dust suppression is concerned, the causes of dust development and the effectiveness of methods applied to reduce dust concentrations have to be identified, whereas with regard to the control of job assignment, the dust exposure of mine workers has to be depermined. Demands placed on dust measurements -- specifically for determining dust exposure -- are liable to become more severe since the threshold limit values were considerably reduced in these last years and since any additional dust suppression measures as well as a purposeful job assignment to certain mine workers are dependent on relevant measuring data. Therefore, research work has been carried out with the objective of measuring and evaluating, in terms of their effect (i. e. their incidence on the development of a CWP), size distribution, concentration, and specific noxiousness of any prevailing dust conditions.

The Archaean Yilgam craton has been a major gold province since 1888 with production and reserves of about 4700 tonnes. Production in 1994 was about 135 tonnes. The largest deposit, the famous Kalgoorlie Golden Mile, contains about 2000 tonnes of gold. About 40 deposits containing more than 35 tonnes (1Moz) of gold has been discovered so far in the Yilgarn. Most of the craton has deep weathering profiles inherited from previous tropical climatic conditions, modified by subsequent arid conditions. A mantle of transported material covers much of the variably stripped weathering profiles. Resolving the geology of the volcanic-sedimentary units (greenstones) and the structures that host the gold mineralization relies heavily on aeromagnetics and shallow drilling.

The broken hill proprietary company Ltd., Australia's only steel producer, has come a long way. Since 1885 to reach today's. Capacity of 6.6 million long tons of ingot steel per year.* its Newcastle steel complex in New South Wales, located 100 miles north of Sydney and on-stream since 1915, has likewise shown continued impressive growth (fig. 1). The most recent expansion plans at Newcastle call for sub¬stantially increasing its production, with the help of some added facilities, but principally relying on the increase in efficiency of the furnace operation. Its modern raw materials blending system will playa major role in meeting Newcastle's new targets.

Electrowinning is a key process for copper production contributing roughly twenty percent globally and thirty to forty percent of production in the Americas1. Copper grade is assessed largely on deposit smoothness and on level of impurities in the metal. Smoothing aids are essential to create dense, low porosity deposits and guar has long been the material of choice for this purpose. Guar is, however, poorly stable under the strongly acidic electrowinning conditions, underlying ongoing research to identify an effective, acid-tolerant replacement. Current efficiency is also a critical factor in controlling copper production costs and chemical additives should ideally improve current efficiency as well as improving deposit smoothness.

The Kennecott Ridgeway Mine in South Carolina is scheduled to complete mining and ore processing in the last quarter of 1999. Tailings are disposed in a 300 acre, lined tailings impoundment. To facilitate closure and reclamation, modification of the tailings impoundment operation has been adopted. Mining involved the sequenced development of two open pits. In 1996 mining of the South Pit was completed and backfilling of the pit with waste rock from the North Pit was initiated and will continue until mining ceases. Both pits will be reclaimed as fresh water lakes. This paper presents the physical, geochemical and hydrogeochemical evaluation of the operational and post operational management of the project. Comparison of the operational monitoring data against predicted performance are reviewed.

Results of investigations over approximately the last 10 years by the Bureau of Mines and others on technology for recovering cell-grade alumina from domestic nonbauxitic resources such as clay, anorthosite, alunite, dawsonitic oil shale, coal ash, and coal shale are reviewed. It is concluded that, although many innovative techniques have evolved from this effort and have been shown to be technically feasible, energy and economic considerations will prevent any of the processes from competing with the Bayer process under normal conditions. Based on the Bureau's experience, some variation of clay-HCI leaching, HC1 gas sparging crystallization has the greatest potential as an alternative to the Bayer-bauxite process.

I am deeply honored and grateful to receive the prestigious Gaudin Award. Frankly, I find myself amazed to be included in the company of those outstanding individuals who have previously received this recognition. I am humbly honored to receive this award from an industrial research group. Gaudin was an internationally respected leader of mineral processing. His research contributions widely covered the whole spectrum of mineral processing science and technology, including comminution, size distribution, electrostatics, magnetics, thickening and, especially, the development of flotation theory and application. In his later career, he increased his emphasis on hydrometallurgical technology. In fact, one of his most notable practical contributions was in the development of leaching and ion exchange purification of uranium from low-grade ores. Gaudin catalyzed the trend in mineral processing toward engineering science for a better understanding of process mechanisms and kinetics. He said that those working in academic fields should have an underlying responsibility to the industry they represent. This imposed on him the objective of seeking out research areas that had some relevance to industry's problems. He said, "research without an audience cannot survive." Gaudin performed a most vital service, both in the areas of research in which he was actively involved and through his less-direct influence on current research by his many former students and their students in turn. Interestingly, Gaudin's strength has influenced Newmont Mining Corp. His favorite student was Plato Malozemoff. He had a long and distinguished career with Newmont, beginning as staff engineer in 1945, serving as Newmont's president for more than 30 years and as chairman of the company for 20 years. Newmont's greatest growth occurred during his leadership. Another one of Gaudin's graduate students from Montana School of Mines, Oscar F. Tangel, joined Newmont in 1967. He was a vice president of research and development until 1986. In their efforts, Newmont built a research group, developing the technologies of exploration, geophysics and metallurgy. The Newmont technical facility is named in honor of Malozamoff as "a leader in the development and implementation of new technologies." The mining industry is facing very difficult times, especially in the metals industry. Most metal prices have declined and are still not stable. Most domestic mining companies have largely done away with in-house research and development. Many are reluctant to invest in technology development for which there is not an immediate need. The metal mining industries are focusing on reducing operating costs to survive. Newmont is in the same situation. I appreciate that Newmont's management believes in the importance of research and technology and the impact technology has on the company's value. At Newmont, technology development involves working in the area of applied research. The connections from academic fundamental research to applied research and finally to process development and implementation are very important to develop a new technology. Fundamental research is our foundation, our guidance, giving us direction, providing the principal and mechanism and understanding why it works. Understanding the why will lead to further innovative development. Applied research needs to find the approach to reality, how it works, how to make it better and how to commercialize it. Process development and implementation needs a strong leadership, requires long-term commitment, makes improvements in practical engineering and finally develops an economically favorable process. Implementation is the most important stage in making research a reality. Each stage needs to give feedback to the other stages. Problems need to be understood and solved. The Macassa Mine is a mature mine with a 61 year history of continuous production. The majority of past production has been derived from a zone called the '04 Break (Main Break). Recent underground mine exploration has been successful in locating several neighbouring ninera1ized zones. This paper will characterize the spatial location, geometry and mineralogical properties of these secondary zones. Future plans for underground mine exploration to follow-up on these target zones will be outlined.

Mergers and acquisitions (M&A) within the mining industry are becoming frequent events. Large companies and small companies alike are jumping on the bandwagon of merger mania. The results of these mergers have significant impacts on the employees of the involved companies. Comments, observations, and specific examples of the 'peop1e"aspect of mergers are presented in an attempt to answer the question "will it be business as usual?" My answer is a simple NO. This paper attempts to provide support for my conclusion. The reader should recognize that the comments, observations, and specific examples mentioned in this paper are subjective and reflect the experience and prejudice of the author.

Outlined is a review of the application of new selective chelating reagents as flotation collectors; calculation methods for the selection of chelating structures, limitation of the function of commercial chelating agents as collectors, and the synthesis of two new classes of chelating collectors with mixed aliphatic-aromatic structure for oxidized lead-zinc ores. Given are: examples of substituted mercaptobenzothiazole and aminothiophenol structures, flotation and adsorption study of an alcoxyl-mercaptobenzothiazole on cerussite, comparison of adsorption of conventional and chelating collectors, study of the influence of the aliphatic structure1 component on the collecting power of chelating type reagent and the design of chelating collectors with optimal structure.

Two case studies of methane gas explosions and their effect on the operation of underground coal mines are presented. The studies detail the recovery operations and investigations at each mine site. These include the circumstances prior to the explosions and the effects on the surface and underground ventilation control systems. Various ignition sources such as surface and underground electrical power systems, degasification sites, ventilation shafts, test well casings, and lightning activity were investigated. In each case, a lightning report from the National Lightning Detection Network1 was used in conjunction with the physical evidence and eyewitness accounts to confirm lightning strikes as the ignition source for the explosions.

Commercial lime plants in the United States and Canada are depicted in Figure 1. The sources of lime available to Nevada and bordering states are rather few. Chemstar Lime has plants at Apex, Nevada and Nelsen, Arizona. Continental Lime, Inc. has plants at Tacoma, Washington, Townsend, Montana and Delta, Utah. However, Continental Lime has a new rotary kiln installation underway near Wendover, Nevada. This plant is scheduled to come on stream in the fall of 1989.

"Each January, tunneling and underground professionals gather in New York City for the George A. Fox Conference. The one-day event offers attendees the opportunity to listen to their peers outline what’s new in the underground construction industry, get updates on major projects in North America and have a chance to catch up of old friends.The conference is put on by the Underground Construction Association of SME. This latest conference attracted about 370 specialists in the industry. The theme for this year’s event was “Water Tunnels, Past, Present and Future.”The technical session included talks focused on major tunneling projects, including the massive California Water Fix program and the Massachusetts Water Resources Authority (MWRA) Metropolitan tunnel redundance program in Boston. The conference also included an update on the Gateway Project from Phil Rice from WSP and Mahammed Nasim of Amtrak as well as a Tunnel Industry update.The following is a sample of a few of the presentations. Technical presentationsDEP’s Tunneling Program Evolution. James Mueller is the agency chief engineer of New York City’s Department of Environmental Protection (DEP). Its mission is to plan sustainable infrastructure investments for the future of clean water and the environment in the city and its watersheds, he said. The agency’s goals are to synthesize information across bureaus within DEP to allow data-driven decision-making. It is also to optimize internal agency processes and systems related to the implmenation of engineering programs within a structured assessment process. The agency also prioritizes projects and funding within a structured integrated planning process. And it standardizes project performance and delivery to meet the needs of the agency in alignment with industry standards and market capabilities."

The Northside Storage Tunnel Project in Sydney includes over 20 km of TBM driven tunnels, over three km of declines and major caverns and pump rooms. The paper describes methods used for design on the project. Emphasis is given to the refinement of the use of empirical rock mass classifications, and to the use of discontinuum numerical methods. The use of empirical rock mass classifications in Sydney sandstone has usually led to conservative design because the systems are based on a random orientation of joints in the rockmass. Because the joint sets are usually oriented in a way that is beneficial for tunnelling, limits must be placed on the parameters used in the classifications system. The paper discusses these limits and the derivation of the parameters. The use of numerical methods in Sydney sandstone is discussed. Continuum methods have their uses, but discontinuum methods are preferred. The use of UDEC has been validated against a previous project, the New Southern Railway. Recommendations are given for UDEC models. In Sydney's geology, so advantageous for tunnelling, the challenges of this project have been to make the best use of the good conditions, while maintaining safety for the workforce and the future operators of the project.

Several controlled recirculation systems are in operation wor1dwide. As an unconventional technique of ventilation the implementation of such a system requires particular safety conditions and a well-founded set of feasibility factors and parameters. On the other hand, many mines in Romania are facing problemms in meeting the growing ventilation demands, so that controlled air recirculation could give an answer. The present paper presents the results of the work in this field, based on a detailed theoretical approach. Parameters wich must to be taken into account were identified and analysed, numerical simulation are carried out and an experimental test-scale model is presented.

Defining Productivity Productivity is a principal concern to all organizations - industrial, commercial, government, and academic. As a ratio of output to input, productivity measures the efficiency of an industrial process, much as thermodynamic efficiency measures the useful work obtained from the available energy consumed. However, there is one important difference. Whereas thermodynamic efficiency is a dimensionless a ratio of energies, productivity output and input are usually measured in different physical units. Nevertheless, the resulting ratio is a normalized expression for unit of output per unit of input to the process. In the early days of coal, mining was essentially a hand loading operation. There was little expenditure of alternative forms of energy within the process. Loading required expenditures of human energy on the order of 1.2 MJ/t (1,000 Btu per st). And if we accept the conventional value "you load 16 tons," the output to input ratio is 14.5 t (16 st) per manshift. In energy terms, it is on the order of 116 MJ/t (100,000 Btu per st) produced per labor Btu expended. However, the latter measure of efficiency was not meaningful in economic terms, while the 14.5 t (16 st) per manshift was significant. Since labor was the principal component of cost, it represented a direct relationship to the cost of production: [ ] Furthermore, when workers were paid directly on the basis of tons produced, the labor cost per ton was specified directly by this rate. With the introduction of mechanized loading, significant increases in productivity occurred, when measured on the basis of tons per manshift. Electric power consumed about 11.6-116 MJ/t (10,000-100,000 Btu per st). This makes the 29-GJ/t (25 million Btu per st) coal output/input ratio between 100 and 1,000. That is one or two orders of magnitude lower than hand loading. However, electric energy was quite inexpensive compared to labor, which made the mechanization economically efficient. The accepted productivity measure continued to be tons per manshift. This measure includes some of the effects of mechanization: namely, the additional manpower needed to maintain the machines and support the equipment that uses electrical energy. However, it does not consider the capital and operating costs that relate to mechanized equipment. As a result, the concept of tons per machine-shift has emerged as an accepted measure of shift productivity. The only appropriate measure that encorporates the productivity of men and machines is an economic one. The output is the tonnage per shift and the impact is the cost per shift. [ ] This is simply the inverse of the cost per ton. In addition, much flexibility is available in allo¬cating costs to the three categories. This adds a level of intangibility to the measure. The amount of information needed to obtain all of the required costs is appreciable compared to the simple matter of counting tons and workers. Furthermore, financial information relating to production costs is closely held by mining companies, so historical statistics on economic productivity are not publicly available. To extend the concept further, consider the value of the tonnage produced, to obtain a dimensionless ($/$) measure of economic productivity.
