Compania Minera Disputada de las Condes S.A. (Disputada) is proactively implementing closure and reclamation planning activities at its mining and beneficiation facilities (mining facilities) in Chile where regulations governing mine reclamation are not yet fully in place. These activities are being implemented to improve currently employed measures to protect human health and the environment and to enhance reclamation and facilitate future closure with regard to these areas when mining is completed. As part of this process, Disputada, with the assistance of Shepherd Miller, Inc., developed recommendations and guidelines for future closure and reclamation of the Disputada sites. These recommendations and guidance incorporate planning and operational and post-operational design considerations and practices, and standards used by the mining industry and regulatory agencies around the world. The criteria presented in the guidance are based on achieving conditions that will be suitable for the anticipated post-mining land use. This paper discusses the process and approach taken, and the results.

Deep well disposal is a much used and abused term which is the panacea for wastewater disposal in some minds and creates near hysteria in others. It can be the answer to a difficult waste disposal problem, or if improperly employed, can create more problems than it solves. My purpose in this presentation is to focus on the value and limitations of deep well disposal as expressed by New York State's experience and policies. To he sure, I feel a place for such practices docs exist if adequate safeguards are utilized. I shall give a broad brush approach to New York's legislative, geologic and operational concerns and speak briefly on some case histories. I shall not delve deeply into the technological details since I am not an expert in mining exploration or well drilling.

REAM is a unique and promising method of rock breaking using high energy, inert projectiles to impart mechanical energy to the rock. This paper describes a demonstration of the application of this new technology to two specific problems in open pit mining: secondary breakage and the scaling of loose material from pit walls. Under previous government contracts, Physics International Company developed the projectile impact method for a large variety of commercial and military rock excavation tasks. A 4 meter (13 foot) diameter by 16.8 meters (55 foot) long tunnel was driven at the Hope Valley Mine in the Sierra Nevada mountains of California in 1972 and 1973. An average of 1100 kg (1 ¼ tons) of a 172 MN/m2 (25,000-psi) granodiorite formation was broken by each of 590 shots used to drive the tunnel.l Based on these results it is estimated that REAM can drive over 60 meters (200 feet) of tunnel per day at about 88 percent of the cost of drilling and blasting. In addition, repeated axial impact by high energy projectiles was used to drill a 0.4 meter (16 inch) diameter horizontal hole in the same granodiorite formation. Each shot advanced the hole an average of 0.2 meter (8 inches).

Effective mine operation demands that the right people have the right information at the right time. Caterpillar's Mining and Earthmoving Technology System (METS) meets this demand by providing "real-time" information transfer between the mine offices and machines equipped with the Caterpillar Computer Aided Earthmoving System (CAES). Transfers of mine plans from the mine planning software to CAES-equipped machines give operators access to current mine plans within minutes of their creation. Additionally, office personnel have access to a current digital terrain model (DTM) of the mine site as it is updated in "real-time" by CAES-equipped machines. METS provides mine personnel in operations, planning, and management the information they need when they need it.

The occurrence of rock bursts in some deep mines throughout the world constitutes a severe operational hazard. In addition to endangering the safety of the miners, the rock-burst problem is a major factor in mining economically in deep mines because of the loss of production and expense owing to cleanup and repairs following a burst. Developing means of controlling or eliminating rock bursts has been the subject of intensive research for over 50 years. While much has been learned about the effects of rock bursts, little is known about their basic causes; hence, control measures have been at best only partially effective--attested to by the number and severity of bursts that continue to occur throughout the world each year. In the Coeur d'Alene mining district of north Idaho, the rock-burst problem continues as the silver and lead veins persist at depth. These veins are presently being mined at greater than 7,000 feet below the surface and will be mined to some 10,000 feet in the future. The majority of rock bursts in this district occur in pillars. While pillar bursting has been essentially eliminated in some deep-mining districts by longwall techniques, modification or application of this technique to the thin, irregular, and near vertically dipping veins of the Coeur d'Alene district has not been found to be practical. The creation of pillars is a consequence of the horizontal cut and fill mining method used. Figure 1 shows a vertical longitudinal projection of the silver vein at the Galena mine, illustrating the mining method. Stoping progresses between raises and is carried upward between levels. A horizontal pillar is created as a stope approaches a mined-out level. Recent broad-band micro seismic monitoring of rock-burst-prone stopes by the Bureau of Mines has shown that potential burst zones could be delineated weeks in advance of a burst and that a definite sequence of events took place prior to the occurrence of a pillar burst (1). Hence, time was available for control measures to be effected when a stope pillar reached a critical burst geometry.

The Refugio Project is located in the Andes mountains of northern Chile, in the Maricunga Hineral Belt. The Verde, Pancho and Guanaco Au ore bodies have been recognized and are Early Miocene in age. Mineralization consists of fine-grained disseminated gold hosted by dacitic to dioritic subvolcanic porphyries. Alteration comprises massive to veinlet-controlled silicification overprinted on earlier potassic and propylitic alteration and surrounded by later argillic alteration. Geologic relationships suggest that the Refugio ore bodies occur within an Early Tertiary volcano overlying Paleozoic and Mesozoic basement rocks. Geologic reserves at Refugio are approximately 300 million grams (9.7 million ounces) of gold. The Verde deposit contains 185 million tonnes of mineable and leachable ore with an average grade of 0.90 glt Au and is currently in the pre-construction stage after a positive feasibility study. Proven and probable mining reserves at Verde deposit are 101 million tonnes at an average grade of 1.02 glt gold. Additional potential exists at to other deposits within the Refugio property (Pancho and Guanaco) but no reserves have yet been defined due to the limited drilling to date.

"Paste Technology has some advantages comparing to other surface disposal methods. With this method, it is possible to pump high concentrated solid materials to very long distances without segregation problem. However, it is known from Literature that pumpability of materials is completely related to rheological properties of the materials. For this reason, in this study, the rheological parameters (e.g. yield stress and viscosity values) of the paste material prepared from Pb-Zn tailings at various solid ratios (60-85%) were obtained in order to determine the pumpability of the paste material. Additionally, slump tests, which are usually used in mining industry, was carried out. Finally, regression analysis was made between the slump values and rheological parameters of the paste material to find a correlation between two independent parameters. The results showed that there is a great correlation between the slump values and the yield stress of the material. On the other hand, there was no correlation with viscosity: ty=430.28-16.877Sv (R2= 0,94; ty: Yield Stress (Pa), Sv: Slump Value (cm)). Based on the results obtained from this study, it can be clearly concluded that the slump values obtained from a simple test can be used to predict yield stress values of paste materials. INTRODUCTION Recently, surface disposal of mining tailings has become one of the biggest problems in mining industry in terms of environmental issues. Therefore, several researches have been focused on this subject in order to find a best solution or method for this problem. These studies showed that paste technology has some advantages compared to other conventional methods. Tailings thickened to the extent show no segregation of particles during transportation, and relatively small amount of settling occur post-deposition which are often called “paste” (Cincilla et al. 1997). Paste tailing technology has two applications in the industrial area as underground paste fill and surface paste disposal. Paste tailing technology was first started to be used in Grund mine, Germany in the late 1970s (Grice, 1998). Process tailing material, water and - if needed - cement materials, which are the components of the paste, must be blended to obtain a homogenous mixture suitable for pumpability. Consistency behavior of the paste material is determined using a conventional sedimentation cone concrete test (slump). Meanwhile, the slump value of the paste must be between 200 and 250 mm for surface applications (Newman et al., 2001). Additionally, in the case of underground paste system, the optimum slump value must be between 150 and 200 mm. On the other hand, the water content and density of paste at certain slump value change depending on the amount of fine particles in the tailing sample. While moisture of the material will be high, its density will be low because of surface area of particles which increases with decrease in particle size (Meggyes and Debreczeni, 2006). For pumpability of the paste to long distances, slump value of the paste must be good enough to be accepted for use of surface paste disposal. Paste material has a yield stress because they show non-Newtonian behavior and generally is classified as a Bingham plastic fluid. (Cooke, 2008; Theriault, 2003). In addition, the appropriate viscosity value of the paste along with the yield stress must be between 100 and 250 Pa (Bascetin et al., 2013; Bascetin et al., 2014; Bascetin et al., 2015)."

Mining is most vital to our civilization. The current model of extraction technologies was designed without an expiration date and therefore generates environmental effects that are severe. Mining results-effects have been traditionally accepted and promoted around the world since Agricola described mining. Mining’s extractive technology is outmoded and standardized and inflicts negative results-effects on nature. Those results are liabilities dimensioned in legacy and type of nature able to provide to the next generation. In order to design, build, and transform mining effectively we must ask: What is the vision of mining? Mining has exhausted its antiquated mindset of over 200 years. Now it merely pilots us into crisis. The challenge today is to resolve the socio-environmental conflicts globally with a radical transformation of the mining business at its core. This paper illustrates that old mindsets must be radically updated or the concept of mining will continue to be trapped. Changing the mindset will enable discourse toward a new destiny. These changes will change mining for the better. We are able to evolve and get different results than in the past by pursuing a new legacy to live in harmony with nature for many more years. INTRODUCTION Minerals are supported by the law of conservation of mass. They have the unique characteristics of being finite, exhaustible, unsustainable, and have an unlimited recycling. Minerals are also hard to find because we have explored and virtually exhausted the whole crust of this planet. Orebodies that used to be considered world class are almost exhausted. In the short-term, it would be almost impossible to find new world class orebodies unless they could be extracted from the ocean, the moon or other planets like Mars. Mining is designed to extract minerals for profit and to keep civilizations functioning. Subsequently, mining has a social issue that is an economic issue. Thus, mining must be seen as a real and urgent subject matter that must be protected in thought and in fact. The actual mining extractive technologies produce disequilibrium in nature that has unknowable effects in the course of time. History is filled with the negative consequences to nature due to the model of mining. The evidence of these effects from mining’s model is apparent in repetitive liabilities around the world. The effects negatively impact nature without any consideration to how these impacts will manifest themselves in the future. This model of mining is widespread and extolled in every corner of the planet because it is old and familiar and although wasteful and outdated, we do not want to expend financial resources from profit or elsewhere to explore newer ideas, methods, or technologies that would help us keep a sustainable harmony between extraction and nature. We need a new vision for mining today and to explore in what way academia can and must play a social role in the teaching of mining methods. We need to question why we continue to support the old model of mining and to ask ourselves what prevents us from updating and modernizing the method of mining to meet the current needs not just of civilization but the urgent needs to undo some of the damage to the earth. This paper hopes to develop a method to change our minds about how we conduct the business of mining in order to control the destiny of it.

The Bureau of Mines conducts studies of the economic impacts of regulations on federal lands. These studies are part of the Bureau Potential Supply Analysis (PSA) program. To meet the needs of these studies, a methodology was developed to estimate operating and capital costs for a mineral deposit given its tonnage, grade, and depth. The format for the cost models in this study was developed at the Bureau's Western Field Operations Center (WFOC), Spokane, W. A., for studies of known and undiscovered resources on Federal lands. These cost models are described in a Bureau publication by Camm (1991).

The Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection in 1998 reviewed its permitting process to determine how effective its program has been in preventing pollution and to identify here it could be improved. Of the 1,699 bituminous mine permits issued from 1987 to 1 996, 50 were identified to have current or past postmining discharges with water quality problems. The remaining 1,649 sites had no known current or past postmining discharges problems. The 50 sites were selected for further review. On closer examination, 33 of these permits no longer had water quality problems or the problem had not actually resulted from the permitted mining activity. Only 17 permits, or one percent of the total permits issued, were found to have caused long-term postmining discharges serious enough to require treatment and prevent bond release. Analysis of these 17 sites using current knowledge of mine drainage prediction, revealed that the most common cause of error was inadequate information in the permit application. Errors in interpretation of the application data and in implementing the permit were less common. A very small percentage of all permits issued resulted in postmining discharges for no clearly identifiable reason. Trends over the 10-year study period indicated a decreasing incidence of permits resulting in postmining discharges. Further, with the exception of the first few years of data, most of the postmining discharges were of mildly acidic or alkaline quality and amenable to passive treatment.

An investigation of several trace elements distributed among sulfide minerals from deposits located in the southeastern United States was conducted. The deposits investigated are distributed within both the Blue Ridge Province and the Piedmont Province, which are contiguous geographic provinces. Twenty five deposits were examined;' eleven in the Blue Ridge Province and fourteen in the Piedmont Province. Figure 1 shows the locations of deposits investigated. In the deposits investigated, the mineral phases examined were pyrite, pyrrhotite, chalcopyrite, and sphalerite. These phases were chosen because of their relatively widespread occurrence, although no pyrrhotite was seen in the Piedmont Province. A total of 116 polished surfaces of ores were prepared, and mineral phases were collected from these surfaces for analysis. Samples were analyzed for cobalt, nickel, manganese, lead, tin, chromium, molybdenum, and gold. A total of 372 analyses were made. Trace elements were determined by atomic absorption spectrophotometry following standard procedures. In this study, trace elements are defined as those elements which are present in the mineral but which do not affect the chemical formula for that mineral. Lead is considered as a trace element only in ores where little or no lead sulfide could be identified as a distinct mineral phase.

Introduction Traditional aggregate sources - riverbeds and alluvial fans - located close to developing urban centers are being foreclosed to mining. As sand and gravel reserves are depleted, nearby production plants cannot secure additional, adjacent reserves and are being forced to close down. The sand and gravel industry, in many respects, is its own worst enemy. It promotes development, street paving, home building, and industrial and commercial centers. Economics make us favor developments close to our operations. Thus, we encourage development by our neighbors, who soon become our detractors. Current Aggregate Mining Problems Urban development is not compatible with sand and gravel mining. Neighbors dislike the view of pits and quarries, and they complain about dust, noise, and trucking. In general, the neighbors are not happy being close to an aggregate source. This is reflected in land use or zoning laws. In most localities, mining requires a special-use permit. Public hearings are required before a legislative body. If a large group of opponents show up, legislators will often deny the land use. Urban areas are seeing traditional close-in sand and gravel sites becoming no longer available for industry. A parallel situation is also developing in most urban areas. That is, the not-in-my-backyard attitude toward landfills. As urban areas mature; a significant amount of change takes place in the physical makeup of a city. Streets and parking lots deteriorate and need repaving. Curbs and gutters need to be relocated. This necessitates a place to dispose of excess, or old, paving and structural material. Since landfills have become at least as difficult to permit as sand and gravel sites, they are becoming remote from urban areas. A significant portion of the structural material that needs to be disposed of is concrete and asphalt. This material is heavier than other materials. Thus, the cost of moving a large volume of very heavy material to a landfill becomes very expensive. In California, dump truck transportation is regulated by the State Public Utilities Commission through minimum rate tariffs. A rule of thumb for estimating the cost of such transportation is once the material is loaded, the extra kilometer (mile) costs $0.09/t ($0.08 per st). Thus, to haul an 18-t (20-st) road an extra 32 km (20 miles) will cost about $32. Because of its remote location, the cost of hauling aggregates to the point of use in an urban area becomes excessive - about the same as hauling the material to a landfill. Here is a classic example for synergism. If we could save the transportation cost of heavy demolition material by disposing it relatively close to the central city (its source), and at the same time provide an aggregate source close to the central city (its point of use), two difficult economic situations can be solved. Thus, the develop¬ment of recycling concrete and asphalt. Mining Concrete and Asphalt There are two methods of mining concrete and asphalt. The first is to pick up the old pavement in pieces. Thin, cracked pavement can usually be lifted from the grade with a front-end loader. It will break up into manageable-sized pieces. With heavier pavement, it is sometimes necessary to intentionally break it up with a stomper or heavy ripper. The pieces are loaded into heavy dump trucks and shipped to the crushing site. "Steel members of the ground support systems in underground mines are routinely exposed to corrosive environment that may range from acidic to alkaline. Corrosion of steel bolts leads to metal loss and thereby, reduction in strength and useful life. Protective coatings are commonly applied to the steel bolts to combat corrosion. However, coatings are expensive and often cumbersome in practical applications. Instead, Minova has developed an innovative technology based on sacrificial anodes. The anodes were designed from non-ferritic alloys that are inferior to steel on the Galvanic Series. This paper will present data from field testing to show significant benefit of the technology. Potential applications in current products will be discussed. INTRODUCTION Corrosion is a physical alteration of a steel material from electrochemical reaction with its environment that often results in reduction of the mechanical and physical properties of that material. Mine roof bolts, the subject of this investigation, are particularly susceptible to corrosion as they can be exposed in their working environment to ground water and air with high humidity. As other researchers have determined, corrosion increases markedly in sulfide ore bodies due to acid runoff. There are several types of corrosion that a rock bolt is likely to undergo when used for ground reinforcement in underground mines (Aziz et al., 2013). Of all the types of corrosion, pitting is particularly dangerous as it can remove capacity for the bolt to deform with subsequent strata movements. Sudden failure of a bolt is likely to occur when severe pitting corrosion is experienced. The type and nature of corrosion depend on the nature of the ground condition and bolt encapsulation. Generally, the type of corrosion and severity of the corrosion varies along the axis of bolt. Almost all of the mine roof bolts used in mines, with the exception of fiber reinforced polymers, are made from steel. In underground mine production units that employ discrete-vehicle face haulage, feeders are used in the belt network so that vehicles can unload rapidly without transmitting to the conveyor network the high material flow rates that result from rapid unloading. They prevent production bottlenecks at the face, while reducing capacity requirements for downstream materials handling equipment. Similarly, surge bins may be installed at intermediate locations in the network to smooth flows from a number of upstream sources, thereby reducing downstream belt capacity requirements. This paper introduces new stochastic process models to temporally describe loading patterns from unit operations and techniques for computing the probability of various fill levels for the feeder or surge bin. These results may be used to analyze the effect of alternative bin or feeder capacities and discharge rates on the performance and costs of the materials handling system.

The flocculation and dispersion behaviors of microsize wolframite and quartz are systematically studied in this paper. For synthetic mixtures, the floc separatory method on gravity units--electromagnetic vibration table (EVT) and lifting column (LC), have been approached. Satisfactory results can be obtained with a weak shearing. A better metallurgical performance can also be achieved for natural ore slimes through the combined technique. The efficiency is better than that of single gravity separation. Finally, the mechanism has been investigated.

In 1984 a high temperature heat recuperation system was installed in the pellet plant of the National Steel Pellet Company located in Keewatin, Minnesota. The system is similar to those of Cleveland Cliffs Empire and U.S. Steel's Minntac operations. It recovers hot process air from the cooler by induced flow, and directs it to an intermediate zone between the drying and preheat zones on the grate machine. This system recently underwent further modifications in April 1985, following initial operation in 1984. The M. A. Hanna Company, which manages the property, developed the design criteria and made the subsequent recommendations for modification through its research facility in Nashwauk, Minnesota.

Use of geostatistics to solve mining problems is gaining importance as the cost of developing new mines is increasing and there is a need to mine more marginal deposits. But, until recently, coal companies have shown little or no interest in geostatistics. However, the stringent quality controls on coal burning has led to a surge in interest in improved methods for estimating clean coal characteristics. Until now, most of the geostatistical applications have centered on the problems of estimating in-situ coal characteristics (Sabourin, 1975; Wood, 1976, 1979; Fang and Stark, 1976; Pauncz and Nixon, 1979; and Knudsen et al., 1980). Little work has been done in applying geostatistics to coal washability, except that by Armstrong (1980). Applying geostatistics to coal washability basically means the estimation of cleaned coal characteristics, with the aid of geostatistics. Cleaned coal estimation plays a very important role in overall emission control strategy, as can be seen by the general flow diagram of such a strategy shown in Figure 1. The scope of this paper is limited to one aspect of the overall emission control strategy shown in Figure 1; namely, the prediction of cleaned coal characteristics using geostatistics.

Selective flocculation is used for the purification of clay minerals. Here we present data from a surface spectroscopic investigation into the polyacrylamides mediated selective flocculation of kaolin from an impure matrix. Use of X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) was shown to offer a useful approach for investigating the observed selective separations. In particular, a new small area XPS technique was used to characterize, in situ, the differential competitive, f1occulant adsorption onto mixed kaolin/gangue systems.

"Philosophy" addresses the definition and assigning of importance to the marketing of by-products. Two examples, one in metals and the other in industrial minerals, explore prime product to by-product relationships. Relative revenues from all products illustrate the importance of by-products to economic feasibility. "Mechanics" takes a broad view of the types of marketing organizations that are applicable to individual circumstances in the marketplace. In-house marketing as well as agents, merchants and trading companies are outlined and discussed. Philosophy Definition Of Terms Philosophy Definition Of Terms The definition of terns for a paper such as this is generally a necessary but not-very-interesting exercise. However, in simply trying to clearly define the term "by-product" some interesting relationships between products arise and the line of demarcation between "product" and "by-product" often becomes obscure. The search for that distinction represents the philosophy portion of the title. A couple of definitions of philosophy can even help to set the tone for what follows. According to Webster, philosophy is : 1 Pursuit of wisdom. 2. A search for a general understanding of values and reality.
