9.1 INTRODUCTION There are approximately 70,000 abandoned coal mines nation¬wide, which is about 35 times the number of underground coal mines presently operating. The US Bureau of Mines estimates that there are over 8 million acres of undermined land due to the extraction of coal, metals, and nonmetals. Subsidence has affected more than 2 million acres, and more than 99% of the subsidence is related to underground coal mining. There is reason to believe that some of the remaining 6 million acres of the undermined land have a high potential to subside. The expansion of housing, highways, commercial structures, and other facilities has required the use of many areas that are underlain by abandoned coal mines, and this growth will continue. Many subsidence problems are derived from the collapse of aban¬doned underground coal mines. There are numerous abandoned mine workings in the anthracite fields of northeastern Pennsylva¬nia, in the Appalachian bituminous fields, the Illinois Basin, the Rock Springs, Wyoming area, and other areas of the United States (Gray et al., 1976). Various room and pillar patterns of mining have been used in the dipping anthracite seams and the nearly flat-lying bituminous seams with considerable variation in the per¬centage of coal extracted. The progressive deterioration of pillars, mine floors, and mine roofs after long exposure to air and water may later result in the collapse of strata over the mine entries, the crushing of the remaining coal pillars, or the bearing failure of the mine floor beneath the coal pillars. Subsidence then results as the collapse reaches the ground surface in the form of differential strains, depressions, cracking of the ground, and sinkhole devel¬opment. Subsidence over active longwall mines, which occurs concurrently with mining or is completed within a short period following coal extraction, has been studied extensively over the past decade. On the other hand, subsidence over abandoned coal mines receives little attention by the researchers, mainly because it is difficult to predict and takes place decades after mining has ceased. The techniques of investigating the subsidence events over abandoned coal mines are similar to those employed for active mines except that at the outset, it is necessary to determine whether or not the subsidence events are mining-related (Chugh et al., 1986; Cummings and Singh, 1986; Peng and Hsiung, 1986). This calls for the identification and confirmation of abandoned mine workings under or near the affected surface structures. Gen¬erally old mine maps, if available, are acquired, the surface bore¬holes are drilled for confirmation of the accuracy of the mine maps and determination of the potential for continued subsidence. Sub¬sidence monuments are established and periodic surveys con¬ducted to determine the amount and trends of surface movement in and around the affected surface structures; surface boreholes are used to investigate the integrity of the underground structures (i.e., roof, coal pillars, and floor) by TV camera. They are also used for monitoring the vertical and horizontal movements of the subsur¬face strata by Sondex (FPBX) and inclinometer (PFBI), respec¬tively, for determining the continuity of the subsidence events. Tape extensometers, crackmeters, etc., are used to monitor the development trends of major cracks in the structures or on the ground. These data are used to identify the causes of the subsidence events. Finally, abatement methods are selected to stabilize the structures. It must be noted that most subsidence events over abandoned coal mines are reported after the fact, and investiga¬tions are begun some time after reporting, that the subsequent measured movements are generally much smaller than that at¬tained in the active mines, and that due to lack of knowledge about the damage conditions and the exact location of the abandoned mine workings with respect to the affected surface structures, the precise causes of surface subsidence or surface structural damages are in most cases very difficult to identify. 9.2 TYPES OF SURFACE SUBSIDENCE According to Gray et al. (1977), after examining 354 incidents of subsidence above abandoned mines in the Pittsburgh metropol¬itan area, the subsidence features have a mean diameter (i.e. the average of long and short dimensions) from less than 1 ft to 1600 ft, with 84% less than or equal to 15 ft; the subsidence features have a depth ranging from less than 1 ft to 48 ft, with 89% less than 25 ft; 66% of the subsidence features are deeper than they are broad. Nearly 59% of the subsidence features occur with overbur¬den less than 50 ft thick and 81% less than 100 ft thick. No subsidence features occur with overburden thicker than 450 ft (Fig. 9.1). Occurrence of subsidence incidents varies from imme¬diately to more than 100 years after mining (Fig. 9.2). In analyzing the characteristics of approximately 3000 chim¬ney subsidence features along the Colorado Front Range, Matheson and Eckert-Clift (1986) examined historical aerial photographs on 4- to 14-year intervals between 1937 and 1967 and found that the majority of observable surface subsidence features occurred within 30 to 40 years after mining. According to Gray et al. (1977), the most prevalent subsi¬dence features over abandoned mined land are sinkholes, with depths of more than 3 ft, and troughs or sags, usually less than 3 ft deep. Sinkholes are steep-sided pits, while troughs are shallow depressions much wider in area than sinkholes. A. SINKHOLE SUBSIDENCE A sinkhole is caused by the collapse of a mine roof that works its way upward. If it is not arrested during the process it will eventually reach the surface and emerge as a sinkhole. The process is governed by the thickness and character of the overburden, the width and height of the mine openings. Sinkholes are usually 3 to 20 ft deep and may be 2 to 40 ft in diameter, although most are fewer than 16 ft across (Gray et al., 1977; DuMontelle and Bauer, 1983). Newly formed sinkholes have steep sides with straight or bell-shaped walls. At times, they appear to be conical in profile with the apex upward. If the topsoil collapses, the top portion will widen to form an hour-glass shape. Sinkhole subsidence usually occurs over abandoned mines less than 165 ft deep (Hunt, 1979). Matheson and Eckert-Clift (1986) found that chimney sink¬holes are likely to occur when the ratio of overburden thickness to mining height (h/m) is less than 4 to 5. When h/m is between 5 and 10 to 11, the potential occurrence of chimney sinkholes decreases rapidly. When h/m is more than 10 to 11, less than 10% of the mine openings that collapse will induce sinkholes on the surface.

The Hurtières Tunnel was built in 1995 with drill and blast method, in metamorphic schist. It is located between Lyon and Torino on the A 43 motorway in the French Alps. During the construction, a geological hazard was encountered, which caused a massive ground collapse. The tunnel was filled up with 3,000 m3of glacial materials. Geological investigations realized after the accident showed that a narrow glacial valley was present at this location the water table was 40 m above the tunnel level. The paper will describe the collapse and the remedial methods which were implemented to proceed through the failure area. These included drainage works,2,000 m3 grouting and 6,200 ml jet grouting columns.

When an economic mineral deposit is first discovered, it is almost immediately defined in terms of tonnage and grade. As exploration and assessment continue, the initial definition is ordinarily qualified by such terms as "proven," "probable" and so on. Even at this stage, the fundamental philosophies of the discoverers may manifest themselves in conservative or optimistic views of the deposit's potential. It is unusual, however, for the philosophies to be expressed in terms of metallurgical performance criteria at such an early stage unless the ore is very unusual in its chemistry or mineralogy. Even before drilling is completed, the first mining plans appear, with or without the benefit of metallurgical test data. This is the point at which management philosophies can have some of their greatest impacts. In ideal cases, where large, uniform ore bodies can be developed and mined according to assay cutoffs, the conventional philosophy of maximizing tonnage while minimizing cost can be followed without much metallurgical difficulty. Blast design methods generally deal with end points or limits of design such as spacing, burden, stemming depth, etc. Even cratering design deals with limits defined as a function of energy decay to a limit. Although this crater method provides a better method than trial and error judgment it does not take into consideration the distribution of energy throughout the material to be blasted. This paper deals with a method of examining this distribution with the aid of a computer and how changes in blast design affect this distribution. First I would like to explain the equation used to develop the energy summations throughout the blast. As shown in Figure I a series of drill holes are drilled to various depths starting by placing the explosive charge on the surface and then at various depths until a sufficient depth of hole is reached to exceed the ability of the explosive energy effect to reach the surface of the ground. All volumes of explosive are the same, all holes contain the same explosive and the drill hole diameter is the same.

Prior to 1903, the world's supply of sulphur was primarily from surface deposits in Sicily. The discovery of the first salt dome sulphur deposit in 1867 and successful development of the Frasch process for recovering the sulphur resulted in a large part of this essential element being supplied from these mines since 1920. Although the basic process is the same today, engineering and technological developments have evolved to allow its application under many adverse conditions. These and other challenges for the industry in today's environment will be discussed in the paper.

These challenges are based on mining’s negative reputation and extensive impact on the environment, nearby communities, and human rights. To ensure the survival of mining in the future and achieve mineral demands, an emerging topic that has initiated the revolution of the traditional sector into a more environment- friendly and transparent industry, is Environmental, Social, and corporate Governance (ESG). ESG has motivated companies to seek growth opportunities and standardize risk accountability and transparency based on its collective framework that creates, modifies, and implements local, national, and international standards. These standards focus on improving environmental, social, and governance issues faced by companies and their projects. ESG has served as a guideline that investors utilize to assess companies and promote sustainability, responsibility, and disclosure to create positive and balanced relationships with stakeholders and the environment. Nonetheless, concerns have been rising which state that ESG is negatively impacting the mining industry by targeting what fuels the industry and world: ore deposits and their resources. Therefore, this research focused on answering the following research questions: what are the impacts of ESG on the copper supply chain and how will stricter ESG standards affect future copper production?

The slag measurement systems in the cast house are very important. In the conventional method, the slag is granulated in a slag granulation system, and the slag flow rate is measured by the associated belt scale. However, in places where a slag granulation system is not available, the alternate approach is to deduce a theoretical calculation and develop the measurement because the commissioning of such slag granulation requires huge capital and has inherent geographical limitation. However, the theoretical approach suffers from several drifts and is far from the reality. In the present paper, we have innovatively engineered a sensor by designing the stellite-coated thermocouple that can measure the temperature of the slurry and placed it in such a way that the abrasive slag granules do not obstruct it, but we could measure the temperature of hot water, and further based on the thermodynamic approach, the slag flow rate is determined that can be compared with the theoretical approach. This approach of slag rate measurement is cost-effective and long-lasting.

Little did I know, in 1977, that when the A. P. Green Refractories Raw Material Manager showed me 5-6 burlap bags with samples of calcined high alumina bauxite in their testing lab that this was the start of China moving to be the number one user and producer of calcined refractory bauxite. According to Ted Dickson in his August 2008 Industrial Minerals article China produced about 4 million tons of calcined bauxite in 2007 using 2 million tons themselves. They imposed an export limitation of 970,000 tons in 2007 and 940,000 tons in 2008. A 10% growth will take up the difference between exports and production in 4 years. Two of these years are gone. It will take only 4 more years to eliminate the export quota in home use. Then they will be importing unless they increase production. Guyana was exporting over a half million tons in 1975 and sold less than 70,000 tons in 2002. Basai Metals Group bought Guyana?s deposits and is rose to 250,000 tons in 2007 and expects to produce 280,000 tons in 2008. PRICES According to the USGS Prices dropped from $172/per ton for Guyana calcines in 1980 just after the start of Chinese production to $122 in 1985. Guyana prices averaged around $120/ton from 1985 to 2005. China?s price dropped as low as $45/ton in 1995 undercutting Guyana and making it virtually impossible for anyone to get into the market. The price suddenly escalated to $550/ton FOB China in the summer of 2008 when China actually cut its exports in half. The price dropped in the fall as orders dropped. This is a four to five fold price increase. Is this a shortage of bauxite or a monopoly? Australia dropped out of the market in 2008 and Surinam, controlled by Alcoa, is not participating right now. Will these two come back in to make up the difference? Will the price hold up so they can make a profit? [ ] The low prices have undoubtedly affected the prices of the 60 and 79% alumina bauxite which can hold down the quantity of 80% plus calcined refractory needed in the world market. China is starting to upgrade lower quality bauxite up to 90% alumina. With high prices kaolin alteration to high alumina comes into play. The calcined bauxite is also used for proponents, Brown fused alumina, and abrasive grades which compete with Refractories. These and the tightness of supplies needed for metallurgical will hold prices up. TONNAGE China is the number one supplier and consumer of high alumina calcined bauxite in the world. Basai Metals Group Guyana (BMGG) is owned and controlled by Basai Minerals Group of China. This appears to be the second largest supplier. Australia has dropped production and Brazil is just starting to expand. It appears China is going to replace some of exports caused by the Export License 940,000 ton maximum in 2008 by raising Guyana?s (BMGG) production of calcined refractory grade bauxite. Companies exceeded restriction in 2007. Fines have been imposed for 2008. In August 2008 they appear on line to meet the 2008 quota. After August prices have dropped off as orders dropped due to the recession. Guyana was the largest producer in 1975 with 769,000 tons which decreased to less than 79,000 tons in 2002. The U. S. is a small part of the world production. I have used the United States charts to represent world imports because I have little data on what other countries import and pay FOB for their bauxite. China started exporting calcined 80% plus refractory bauxite to the United States in 1979 with 24,000 tons. By 1985 they were the number one importer with 169,000 tons. Guyana who had been number one in shipments to the United States gradually decreased to 36,000 tons in 2006. Guyana has been purchased by China BMGG and will increase there production to over 200,000 tons in 2009. Australia shut down production in 2008 and Surinam has elected to not send any Calcined bauxite to the United States. In 1997, Central Contra Costa Sanitary District undertook the design of the Martinez East Side Trunk Sewer Improvements Project. Microtunneling was specified for approximately 1,035 meters (3,400 feet) of 600-mm (24-inch)diameter pipeline to be installed through estuarine soil deposits (San Francisco Bay Mud) and alluvium beneath the congested city streets of downtown Martinez, California. Directional drilling was specified for approximately 275 meters (900feet) of 200-mm (8-inch) diameter pipeline in four separate segments to be drilled through bedrock within narrow utility easements between residential properties. This paper presents a case history for the design and construction of themicrotunneling and directional drilling aspects of the project.

INTRODUCTION The support of openings in weak sandstones can be achieved by spraying on a liquid grout which will soak in and harden to form a shell. In the St. Peter sandstone of the Minneapolis-St. Paul area of Minnesota compressive strength is increased from about 0.7 MPa (100 psi) to over 7 MPa (1000 psi) to depths of 152 mm (6 in.). A shell of this strength and thickness can pro¬vide support much as shotcrete does but at lower cost. If the spray-grouted shell is inadequate for the support needed, it provides a good base for shotcrete application, which is often difficult in weak or friable sand¬stones because the fresh shotcrete peels off along with a thin layer of sandstone. The spray-grouted technique was initially developed at the Civil and Mineral Engineering Dept. of the University of Minnesota using funds provided by RANN Div. of the National Science Foundation. It was used as temporary support in a 3-m (10-ft) wide, 3700-m (12,000-ft) long storm water drain tunnel by the Minneapolis Sewer Construction Dept. Much of the field development at this construction project was carried out with the cooperation of the personnel of the city of Minneapolis. It also was used for temporary support in a 3.3-m (11-ft) wide, 1800-m (6000-ft) long storm water tunnel built in 1978-1980 for the Minnesota Dept. of Transportation in Minneapolis. In 1975, 2000 m (6500 ft) of 1.5-m (5-ft) wide utility tunnels were spray-grouted for final lining. A 50-m (150-ft) long, 1.2-m (4-ft) wide test tunnel built at the university in 1974 was sprayed for half its length and is being observed for long-term behavior which to date (1981) is good. GROUT MATERIALS The requirements for the liquid grout are more severe than those for injection grouting. Besides being able to penetrate the rock and develop sufficient strength, it must have the following properties: (1) be nontoxic, noncombustible, and have a low odor for spraying under¬ground; (2) have controllable viscosity and setting time for adjusting to the permeability of the sandstone and the required depth of penetration; and (3) must "wet" the sandstone and develop capillary "draw" to penetrate to the required depth. A sodium silicate-based grout with the proper setting agent meets these requirements in the local St. Peter sandstone which has a uniform grain size dis¬tribution curve with D,,, = 0.1 mm, permeability of about 10 to 20 darcys, a porosity of about 25%, and less than 5% of silt size or smaller. It is 97 to 99% pure SiO2. The grout mix consists of Philadelphia Quartz Co. Type N sodium silicate and Celtite 55 Terraset Spray Grade (SG) distributed by Celtite Inc., Cleveland, OH. A volume mix ratio of 100:9:125 for sodium silicate to setting agent to water produces a grout with two to four centipoise viscosity, and initial set at 20°C of 20 min. Setting time is temperature dependent, being longer at lower temperatures, but can be adjusted by varying the setting agent concentration a few percentage points. APPLICATION The application is simple. Spray the grout on the surface until the desired penetration is achieved. Penetration rates of about 5 mm (0.2 in.) per min. are realized in the St. Peter sandstone for up to 152 mm (6 in.) of penetration (30 min. of spraying). The set time must be longer than the spraying time. The spray nozzle should be moved back and forth at a rate that minimizes runoff due to surface buildup. Both a single large hand-propelled nozzle and multiple small machine propelled nozzles have been used successfully. The pumping and mixing equipment used consisted of: (1) a hand-held, hand-pumped, 11-L (3-gal) gar¬den sprayer for test patches (mix by shaking); (2) 76-L (20 gal) batch mixing in barrels with small electric pumps for spraying and mixing; (3) two component pumps consisting of Hypro Model 5300 piston pumps (Hypro Pump Co., St. Paul, MN) on a common shaft driven by an electric motor. The sodium silicate is premixed with a portion of the water and the setting agent is mixed with the rest of the water. The two components are combined and mixed just before the nozzle; and (4) a proportioner metering the setting agent just before the nozzle with the water and sodium silicate premixed and pumped from the surface. The proportioner permits the bulk of the grout to be pumped through a single pipe or hose with only the setting agent stored underground. This is efficient and low in cost. COST The grout mix costs about $0.20/L ($0.75 per gal) in 1978 dollars. Filling all the voids 100 mm (4 in.) deep (25% initial porosity) would have a materials cost of about $5.40/m2 ($0.50 per sq ft). The labor cost of application is usually less than the material cost for normal tunnel jobs. A pump and proportioner cost less than $1000. Sodium silicate storage tanks and pip¬ing costs would depend on the particular site conditions. REFERENCES AND BIBLIOGRAPHY Nelson, C. INTRODUCTION This chapter will discuss, both from fundamental and practical points of view, the flotation of non-sulfide min- eral s. The flotation characteristics of silicates, salt-type minerals, oxides and coal will be reviewed. Dup- lication of the thorough and excellent presentations by many authors is not intended and a comprehensive list of references is included. GENERAL PRINCIPLES Collectors for Non-Sulfide Minerals : All minerals, with only a few exceptions are readily wetted by water, that is, they are said to be hydrophilic. The purpose of a collector is to coat the mineral surface and render it hydrophobic, preferring an environment of air over an environment of water. Relative to sulphide minerals, the non- sulfides are more naturally hydrophilic and therefore, require a collector with a greater chain length. This is accomplished by using a collector which has a proportionally longer hydrocarbon chain. Both anionic and cationic flotation collectors are used in non- sulfide flotation. Anionic Collectors. These are collectors which ionize in solution to give a negatively charged radical. They have the general structure R-A, where R is a hydrocarbon having 8 or more carbon atoms and A is a hydrogen or an alkali metal. The most common collectors in this group are fatty acids which could have saturated or unsaturated hydrocarbon chains. Such chains may be straight or branched. The configuration of the chains affects their solubility in water and their adsorption characteristics. In general, as the chain length increases the adsorption and the collecting power increases. However, it should be noted that the solubility decreases. The solubility of unsaturated chains is greater than that of saturated fatty acids because double or triple bonds are polar and thus attract water molecules. Solubility data for collector metal salts, even though important for a proper understanding of flotation are not available for all collector systems. Solubilities and structures of different fatty acids are reported by Fuerstenau (1982). Values for the solubility products of fatty acid salts selected from a paper by Du Rietz (1958) are given in Table 1.

The paper points up the hesitance of private capital to pursue development of offshore mineral mining endeavors due to the deterrent effect of the clouded legal status of such endeavors. Some states have no laws or regulations to protect the potential exploiter. Others have regulations which give no proprietary rights of exploration to mineral discoveries. The above factors and others are discussed and analyzed in some detail, covering, in turn, summations of the federal regulations and of each of the coastal states. Some comparative analyses are provided, and some recommendations for encouragement to capital investors are made.

Introduction Mining and minerals transportation spans the distance from the pit face and mine wall to the consumer. This transportation can be as simple as coal transfer from the mine and preparation plant by conveyor to a mine mouth electric generating plant. Or it can be as complex as copper ore transportation: concentrated, smelted, refined; drawn into wire and insulated; and cut into reels and transported to local industrial supply houses. The route of aluminum from the bauxite pits to the supermarket shelf in the form of household food wrap is another example of the potential complexity of minerals transportation. For perspective, however, mine to market minerals transportation can be split into three components: materials handling, transportation, and distribution. It should also be recognized that each mineral, market, producer, and consumer has unique transportation characteristics regarding costs, transportation mode, and alternatives in the transportation scheme. Some obvious considerations are the number of producers and consumers, the number of markets and customers the mineral serves. Concerning the latter, are you selling a million tons to one customer or a ton each to a million customers? Transportation volume About the only generalization that can be made about minerals transportation concerns the large volume of materials involved. No other industry compares to the mining and minerals industry in its huge movement of product in the crude, semi-processed, processed, fabricated, and converted states, as shown by the accompanying table of US mineral production. Whether it is crushed stone or sand and gravel moving by truck to a local market from local producers, or coal moving by 9.07 kt (10,000 st) unit trains from a mine to a power plant, or iron ore moving by lake vessel from the upper lake ports to the lower lake steel mills, mineral transportation volumes are huge. The nature of production and consumption affects the transportation mode. More than 60% of the coal moves by rail. The majority of iron ore moves by lake vessel. Ninety per cent of the sand and gravel and more than 80% of crushed stone moves by truck. Factors Affecting Minerals Transportation Some would define minerals transportation as the cost and route to move a mineral product from the first point of sale to the first point of consumption. Conveyor equipment beyond its prime chronically suffers from a lack of understanding in today's plant environment regularly delivers more material than original designers ever expected. A case in point is a belt conveyor in a major hard rock mine/milling operation asking to bring the unit up to current standards while eliminating spillage and reducing airborne dust. The challenge was to keep the system going by revamping the system while keeping the same footprint and allowing for higher production rate. Thirty years of daily maintenance and dust collection costs have virtually disappeared by the end of this challenging upgrade.

The interface between precious metal miners and gold refiners has been an uneasy interface over the years. The reasons for this interface and its apparent uneasiness and lack of trust include technical factors, economies of scale, and cultural differences. Technical factors take two forms. First, concentrates, precipitates and sponge produced at the mine site are notoriously difficult to sample and a non-representative sample can be the cause of misunderstanding and distrust. Dore, however, is homogeneous and can be correctly sampled and analyzed. Second, the technology and chemistry of fine gold and silver production is complex and quite different from that of dore production. Most mining companies are content not to be involved with additional processing steps.

This paper examines new copper production from waste-grade ore using Blue Planet Strategies’ DEMET™ (Dynamic Electrode Mining Effluent Treatment) technology, which aims to bridge the practical weak pregnant leach solution (PLS) processing gap in heap leach-solvent extraction/electrowinning (SX/EW) operations by electrochemically removing metals from weak streams and generating product streams strengthened in target metals in a functional analog to SX. Weak PLS treatment was studied and used to estimate the economic and production impacts for a representative hypothetical brownfield copper heap leaching and DEMET-augmented SX/ EW operation to utilize "waste ore." Copper removal at 86% plating efficiency to below 0.1 g/L copper with power consumption of 0.55 kWh/lb copper and product strengths of over 10 g/L copper are presented. Modeling yielded approximately $2/lb total copper production and = $1/lb treatment costs with an immediate operation gross margin increase of 12% for the augmented brownfield. Potential mine life extension with an average 38% gross margin on "waste ore" augmented production at copper values of $3.25/lb was also indicated.

On June 25, 1876 Lt. Colonel George Armstrong Custer led the Seventh U.S. Cavalry Regiment., comprising 31 officers and 637 enlisted men, into the valley of the Little Big Horn River in southern Montana. His assigned mission was a reconnaissance-in- force to locate the Indians reported to be assemblying in that area. Custer was extremely successful in locating the Indians. Unfortunately he located more than 3000 Cheyenne and Sioux under the leadership of the great war chiefs Crazy Horse and Gall. Custer's entire battalion of more than 200 men was annihilated; there were no survivors. While I don't seriously suggest that things will be all that bad in the uranium industry, I do suggest that some very fundamental changes have occurred in the uranium market. Conventional thinking based on past truths will no longer suffice. Geology, economics, politics, nuclear growth pat terns, technology, and utility attitudes have all changed. New thinking is in order. It is at this point that I would offer my usual disclaimer. My views regarding the future are simply that--my personal views. My belief that certain events will come to pass does not mean I view those events as appropriate, wise, good, equitable, or economic.

Estimation of local recovered tonnage and its grade above a cutoff is of paramount importance during the exploration and development stages of any mineral deposit. The spatial dis- tribution of grades as well as the cumulative distribution must be defined. In this paper, Probability Kriging, an estimator based upon rank order statistics and the estimation of the distribution of point grades within a panel, is applied to the Manhattan gold deposit. Mapping the conditional probabilities that estimated panel grades exceed a cutoff is useful to the understanding of the distribution of mineralization in a structurally controlled gold deposit.

This paper describes an experimental setup for multiple fan ventilation systems at the ventilation laboratory of the West Virginia University Department of Mining Engineering. Housed in a 30-ft x 70 -ft room, the experimental setup consists of three 18-in., variable-speed, axial flow fans; an 18-in. -diam, fiberglass tubing; associated fittings for arranging networks; and a picot-tube measuring and data-acquisition system. The fiberglass tubing and fans can be organized into non-planar networks of two or three fans. The setup is mainly designed for studying the characteristic curves, operating points and fan stall for multiple fan ventilation systems.
