For traditional underhand cut-and-fill mining operations, it can be challenging to design a suitable cemented paste backfill (CPB) mix that can meet the necessary strength requirements and yet maintain its ductility. In deep underground metal mines, the CPB must achieve a high enough strength to be competent under high stress conditions while also remaining ductile enough to withstand high strain from squeezing ground as underhand mining continues under backfilled stopes. To eliminate ground falls that result in injuries and fatalities, researchers from the Spokane Mining Research Division (SMRD) of the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) have partnered with Aerix Industries, a producer of concrete additives, to study the effects of foaming agents on the strength and ductility of CPB. This laboratory study examines the impact of various amounts of foam additive on the strength and ductility of CPB mix designs, using binder and tailings provided by Hecla Limited from the Lucky Friday Mine

Introduction My first contact with industrial milling was during the time I worked in the electricity generating industry in the United Kingdom. In visits to power stations to investigate either deposits in the boiler furnaces or polluting deposits settling around the stacks. I had to check the performance of the vertical coal pulverizers, since poor pulverization aggravated both problems. Naturally, then, when I came to the USA in 1957 to take a PhD in fuel technology at Penn State, I was put to work to review the science of coal pulverization. After this reviewing, I was completely confused. On one hand, there was a well-developed understanding of stress-strain equations, and a rap- idly developing knowledge of how stressed, brittle solids fractured, based on the Griffith crack theory. On the other hand, reading in the grinding literature gave me: • Kick's Law, which was clearly not correct in the light of modern fracture theory; • Rittinger's Law, which was also clearly not correct; • Bond's Third Law of Comminution, which was claimed to have something to do with the Griffith crack theory, but where the connection between the two was made by intuitive pseudo- scientific reasoning I could not accept; • the choice of mill motor power for the most common type of coal mill, the Raymond pulverizer, was calculated from the fan power required to move air through the mill. Although I could accept the empirical connection between the two, it made no sense from the point of view of fracture energy. Even today, most books or review chapters on size reduction start from these laws. incorrect statements abound in the literature, such as “the Hardgrove Index is based on Rittinger's Law," which it is not, "The Bond theory states that work input is proportional to new crack tip length produced in particle breakage," which is not true, etc. My own test work showed that these "laws" did not fit the data for grinding of coal. At about this time, Epstein (1 948) and Broadbent and Callcott (1 956), following the original work by R.L. Brown (1941) at the British Coal Utilization Research Association, proposed describing breakage as a series of fracture stages. I took their concepts and developed the basic differential equation for a batch grinding process continuous in time, analogous to a batch chemical reactor. Robin Gardner then joined the project and did his PhD on treating batch grinding in the same way as a batch chemical reactor. He found that the basic equation had already been partially derived by Sedlatschek and Bass (1 953) in Germany. We confirmed experimentally the validity of the equations for describing batch grinding (1 962) and formulated the equation describing steady-state continuous grinding in a fully-mixed mill. At about the time this work was published, Gaudin and Meloy (1962) and Filippov (1961) independently published essentially the same equations, but without experimental proof of the validity of the concepts. I will give a brief overview of what these beginnings had led to in the design of mills for size and power, and show some of the results of this more detailed understanding of grinding processes. Concepts of Fracture Mills such as tumbling ball, rod, pebble and autogenous mills and vertical mills such as the Raymond, and E-type apply compressive stress to lumps or particles relatively slowly. Compressive stress applied to a particle of an elastic brittle solid imparts overall strain energy to the solid and produces local regions of tensile stress, (Fig. 1) (Berenbaum and Brodie, 1959). Irwin (1949) showed from solution of the stress-strain solutions that a small hole in a region of tensile stress reduces stress concentration at the hole, that is, the tensile stress at the tip of a crack or flaw in a solid is much higher than the general tensile stress in the region. The longer the crack, the higher the stress concentration. Griffith (1920) hypothesized that when the regional tensile stress is large enough, then the chemical bonds at a preexisting crack tip are stretched to breaking point, as illustrated in Fig. 2. When the bonds break, the crack becomes longer, the tensile stress concentration increases, the situation is unstable and a crack opens up (propagates) a surface of tensile stress, creating its own tensile stress at the leading edge. Stored strain energy is converted to the kinetic energy of the moving stress field, which is analogous to sound propagation through the solid, so the crack tip accelerates to velocities approaching those of sound. The moving crack will pass through regions that were previously under regional compressive stress. A laboratory investigation was carried out to study the influence of asphalt, bentonite and corn starch binders on the pelletization kinetics of coal fines and on the quality of the resulting pellets. Pellet quality was evaluated in terns of the compression strength, impact resistance (drop test), abrasion resistance and resistance to severe weather conditions. The amount of binder addition did not significantly influence the pellet growth kinetics. However, the pellet quality varied markedly depending upon the type and the amount of binder used. Experimental results are explained on the basis of the mechanism of interaction between the coal particles and the binders. Of the three binders tested, corn starch proved to be the best in all respects but for the resistance to water penetration. Finally, a combination of corn starch (imparting strength) and asphalt emulsion (imparting resistance to water penetration) was found to yield the best quality coal pellets.

The criteria used to design, operate and control flotation columns are significantly different from those used for conventional flotation machines. Therefore, a computer-aided design (CAD) package for column flotation has been developed. The simulator has been set up using guidelines developed at Virginia Tech and information published in literature during the past few years. The simulator is useful for determining the proper design and appropriate operating conditions for a column cell to fit a specific set of conditions. In addition, the simulator can be used for training in column operation and for trouble-shooting operational problems. Simulation results have been found to be in good agreement with experimental data obtained using laboratory columns.

Preliminary figures from the US Mine Safety and Health Administration show 801 underground metal mines and 490 surface metal mines, at the end of 1981, up from 663 and 383, respectively, in 1980. Preliminary MASH figures also show 207 underground nonmetal mines and 1070 surface nonmetal mines at the end of 1981, compared with 167 and 1092, respectively, last year. In addition, preliminary MASH figures show there were 14,676 mineral extraction operations on the surface and 3845 underground at the end of 1981, versus 14,951 and 3675, respectively, for last year. The number of mines, then, in three of four categories increased significantly, while having a lower net total of just 2% in the other category. And the number of underground extraction operations increased nearly 5% for the year, while surface operations were down less than 2%. But despite operations totals that mostly held their own or showed significant increases, it was a tough year for the nation's mining industry. The nonferrous segment of the industry had a bad year and 1982 may be no better, according to Business Week (Jan. 11, 1982), which adds that a turnaround is impossible unless the general economy recovers. Even then, with diminishing markets and overcapacity plaguing its products, the mining industry's condition "will be far from robust," the magazine says. The basic problem is that nonferrous metals-aluminum, copper, lead, molybdenum, nickel, and zinc-are tied to the most troubled sectors of the US economy. As recently as 1979, for example, more than 40% of all aluminum shipments went to the construction and transportation industries. Last year, these markets were down to 35% of aluminum shipments. And molybdenum sales to steel producers dropped by nearly 15% last year. Moreover, nonferrous products ended 1981 at disastrously low prices. Molybdenum oxide sold at $8.77/kg ($3.98/lb), half its $17.63/kg ($8/lb) price earlier in 1981 and aluminum was listed at $1.08/kg ($0.49/lb), compared with $1.54/kg ($0.70/lb) a year earlier. The Comex price of copper was $1.54/ kg ($0.70/lb), down from $3.11/kg ($1.41/lb) in early 1980, in real terms the worst copper price in 30 years. Lower prices led operators to cut their output and increase layoffs, shut down mines, and defer capital spending projects. In December, Duval Corp., a Pennzoil Co. subsidiary, shut all four of its US copper mines until March. Aluminum Co. of America had laid off 7.3% of its work force, shut nine of its 38 smelting lines, and entered 1982 operating at only 68% of capacity. Inco Ltd., the Free World's largest nickel producer, lost money in 1981, an estimated $11 million, for the first time since 1932. And, like Falconbridge Nickel Mines and other major nickel producers, had cut back on nickel production and was operating at only 63% of capacity (Forbes, Feb. 15, 1982). Amax, the country's largest molybdenum producer, had cut production by 20%. And Hanna Mining Co. sold lead for $5.07/kg ($2.30/lb), about $1.54/kg ($0.70/lb) below what it cost to produce. Another problem is that copper companies in the next few years must come to terms with problems of aging smelters. Some companies are simply closing them. In 1980, Anaconda closed its 75-year-old Butte, MT, smelter and is shipping concentrates to Japan, rather than modifying the smelter to meet environmental requirements. And oth Phelps Dodge Corp. and Asarco Inc. have antiquated smelters on which they will have to make decisions. The most troubled metal in 1982, Business Week said, will be molybdenum, with no real recovery in sight until the mid-1980s. High molybdenum prices in the late 1970s, caused in part by shortages, triggered overexpansion that will take years for the US market to soak up. On a more upbeat note, 1981 mergers might help stabilize the industry by providing funds for mining companies. Standard Oil Co. (Ohio) said it plans to spend $7 billion on Kennecott during the next 10 years for modernization and expansion. And Atlantic Richfield Co. said it will spend $500 million on Anaconda Copper Co. during the next five years. Another positive note was sounded by T. H. Adams of the United Banks of Colorado Inc. He said he expects the mining industry to experience moderate growth in 1982, led by "interest rate sensitive" demand from energy, electronics, and defense markets. And mining will be helped by "weak, but improved" construction and auto markets. The mining industry will be operating in an economy stronger than 1981, but still relatively sluggish by postwar standards, Adams predicted. Iron Ore Estimated US iron ore production in 1981 was 75.2 Mt (74 million long tons), up 6% from 70.7 Mt (69.6 million long tons) in 1980, though down from the 87.1 Mt (85.7 million long tons) produced in 1979. The mine value of usable iron produced from domestic mines was estimated at $3 billion. US iron ore was produced by 28 companies operating 35 mines, 26 concentration plants, and 16 pelletizing plants. The mines included 34 open pits and one underground mine. Byproduct ore recovered from copper- and titanium-mining operations accounted for less than 1% of total iron ore production. Fifteen mines operated by nine companies accounted for 94% of total

In situ mining is now considered an alternative mining method for some ore bodies. The in situ operation consists of a well field designed from reservoir properties and geological information; the wells for such a field are then drilled, cased, and cemented, using good designs and practices to eliminate future problems. Injection and production (recovery) systems are required to be corrosion resistant. Hand in hand with the mining operation is the metal extraction plant, the entire operation offering an environmentally acceptable method for metal recovery. Great opportunity exists in this field for mineral engineers; presently, they must borrow knowledge from other fields, since the schools have not yet addressed this specialty.

It is the intent of this paper to discuss the autogenous grinding circuit at Hibbing Taconite. The scope of the presentation includes; a brief history, the process flowsheet and the steps taken to improve mill productivity, availability and metallurgical performance. Hibbing Taconite is located near the center of the Mesabi Range in Northern Minnesota 100 miles from the Canadian border and 80 miles north of the Lake Superior Port Cities of Duluth and Superior. A 105 mile railroad connects us with the port of Superior, Wisconsin, where our pellets are loaded into lake carriers for lower lake destinations. It is worthy to mention the Mesabi Range's most famous landmark which is immediately to the south of our mine area. This is the Hull Rust Mahoning Mine which operated until the mid-1970's producing more than 700 million tons of red ore between 1893 and 1973.

Intensely altered rock has had a large effect on slope stability as slopes increase in height at Island Copper mine. Traditionally used, fracture-controlled rock slope stability design techniques have been supplemented with analyses of failure modes which include failure along curved surfaces typical of soil materials. A rock mass rating (Pa) system has been developed that addresses the lower end of rock mass strengths. Rock masses are rated in terms of fabric integrity, alteration, fracturing intensity and gouge strength. Rock mass classes have been defined using statistical frequency distributions of rock mass rating values. Strength values have been assigned to the various classes from shear testing, back analyses of failures and engineering judgment.

Monterey Coal Company has begun a geologic monitoring program in order to better understand our in-mine geologic conditions and to apply the knowledge gained to our mining operations. Two methods are used to collect information. The first is a monthly examination of conditions throughout the mine using a rapid mapping technique. The second is the detailed mapping of specific events encountered during mining such as faults and roof falls. The data gathered from both methods is correlated with operational statistics to create a geologic/production database. From the database, a monthly evaluation of mining conditions is made. Also, the database has proved useful in such areas as forecasting roof conditions and examining how faulting has affected mining operations.

Recent fatal injuries occurring during pillar retreat coal mining call for better identification of the hazards and recognition of risks. Ground control hazards associated with room-and-pillar retreat mining tend to intensify with depth, requiring extra precautions in the form of additional controls. In many locations these activities are further complicated by local complexities often associated with unique or novel circumstances, such as over-mining or under-mining. One technique recently studied by NIOSH, Major Hazard Risk Assessment (MHRA), may help mine operators to mitigate the risks associated with pillar recovery operations. The approach was trialed at two underground coal mines in southern West Virginia that are currently practicing pillar recovery. The first step in the MHRA process involved reviewing the segments or parts of the pillar extraction mining system and identifying associated hazards and threats to the operation. Some of the high risk hazards at these two sites included: ? Rock fall during pillar extraction covers equipment and injury occurs during recovery operations, ? Rock fall above the roof bolt horizon, potentially injuring ? workers and/or requiring recovery action, ? Rib fall under deep cover, potentially injuring workers, and; ? Strata instabilities associated with subsidence of the interburden due to simultaneously mining two seams in close vertical proximity to one another. The mines? risk assessment teams then considered each threat individually in order to systematically identify potential unwanted events. The top unwanted events were examined individually using structured risk analysis tools. The output from the process includes a list of priority existing controls for monitoring and auditing, and a second list of potential new controls. These controls consisted of: Examples of best practices, ? Enhanced communication, ? Implementing standard operating procedures (SOP), ? Protocols for emergency response actions, ? Effective layouts, ? Efficient monitoring, and; ? Successful audits. This paper documents the process as it unfolded at the two mines, and analyzes the strengths and weaknesses of the MHRA technique as it applies to pillar recovery operations. This work was part of a larger NIOSH research project. NIOSH was responsible for: 1) facilitating the risk assessment process known as Major Hazard Risk Assessment (MHRA), 2) documenting the risk assessment process, and 3) providing mine management with a written draft summary of the risk assessment process. The results of the risk assessment represent the thoughts and opinions of the individual risk assessment teams and should in no way be construed as an endorsement of the risk assessment output by NIOSH or the University of Pittsburgh.

Andalusite is a member of the sillimanite group of minerals consisting of andalusite, kyanite, and sillimanite. These minerals are the structural polymorphs of Al,Si05 (the anhydrous silicate of aluminium) and although chemically similar, they differ in physical properties due to their different crystal structures. For further information on the sillimanite group, see the chapter on Kyanite and Related Minerals that follows. The minerals are generally the products of the metamorphism of alumina-rich sediments and are found in schists, gneisses, or hornfelses, which have undergone either regional or thermal metamorphism from their original form. Sedimentary deposits may also form since the minerals are chemically and physically resistant to breakdown. When heated to a sufficiently high temperature the sillimanite group minerals convert to mullite with a resultant volume expansion and the liberation of silica. Due to the stability of the mullite formed, its high hot strength and resistance to chemical and physical erosion, they are widely used in the manufacture of refractories and special ceramics (Table 1). The reaction can be represented as follows: [ ] The worldwide use of these minerals depends to a large degree on their availability (Fig. 1). Andalusite, with its lower conversion temperature and the lowest volume expansion on being heated is the natural choice as a raw material to produce energy-saving refractories without prior calcination. The Republic of South Africa holds by far the largest minable andalusite deposits of the world, estimated at some 70 Mt of known in situ reserves. The only other large commercial production of andalusite comes from France, with known reserves of about 5 Mt. Potential new deposits are known from China, Ireland, Australia, and South America. World consumption of andalusite in special performance refractories has risen from less than 10 ktpy in 1960 to nearly 300 ktpy in 1990, which is due to cost effectiveness in many industrial applications compared to other conventional refractory products. Andalusite-based refractories have traditionally been used in Europe, South Africa, and the Far East; usage in America was limited in the past due to relatively high delivery costs and availability of other local refractory minerals. However, there is a significant trend towards greater use of andalusite in North America, thus opening new markets and replacing other traditional refractory raw materials. GEOLOGY Andalusite occurs in metamorphosed rocks of clay-like com- position, as in the andalusite-hornfelses in thermal aureoles (contact metamorphism), formed under conditions of high temperatures and low stress, and in regional metamorphic rocks, such as the andalusite-schists. These schists are mostly unconnected with definite igneous intrusions but were presumably also formed at high temperatures and under low stress. Andalusite can also appear in alluvial deposits associated with the primary deposits. At depths of 10 to 20 km, temperatures of up to 450°C might be expected. Another result of increasing depth is an increase of pressure due to the load of the rock cover. The load stresses involved in metamorphism is generally believed to lie in the range 0 to 10 000 bars. During contact metamorphism the increase in temperature is brought about by the injection of magma. The temperature reached in the country rock at some distance from the igneous body will always be less than the initial temperature of the intrusion, which is presumably less than 1 200°C, and will vary with time and distance from the contact. A simple metamorphic reaction involving dehydration of an aluminous sediment can be: [ ] At higher temperatures sillimanite would form at the expense of andalusite, while kyanite would be the mineral formed at higher pressures, as can be seen in the phase diagram of A12Si05 (Fig. 2).

"During his presentation at the 2016 George A. Fox Conference about the history of public-private-partnerships (PPP) in the tunneling and underground construction industries in New York, Vincent Tirolo, Jr., told a story about how, as a young engineer in the late 1960s, he and others pooled money to purchase a calculator for $75 that had the ability to perform sine and cosine functions. That was a big deal in those days and would make their job much easier. Oh how far things have come. Tunnel and underground construction engineers can now virtually map out and plan entire projects before the first shovel ever breaks ground. And the machines that are used to build the tunnels have advanced in ways that could not have been imagined 50 years ago.The calculator is just one example of innovation in the industry and on Jan. 26, more than 400 industry professionals attended the George A. Fox Conference at the Graduate Center of New York (CUNY) to learn more about the next innovations, new tunneling technologies and what the future might hold for the industry. The conference included sessions on contracting models, rescue and fire life safety and new technological developments as well as an international project spotlight presentation from Nasri Munfah about the Eurasia Tunnel, connecting the European and Asian sides of Istanbul, Turkey.The project, also known as the Istanbul Strait Road Tube Crossing project, was named the 2015 Major Tunneling Project of the Year by the International Tunneling and Underground Space Association.The tunnel boring work for the 3,344-m (11,000 ft) long tunnel under the Istanbul Bosphorus Strait was completed in August, heralding a new era in tunneling.Tunnel boring work was launched in April 2014 with a ceremony with then Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan in attendance. The work was completed on Aug. 22, 2015 with Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoglu participating in the ceremony."

The purpose of this paper is to present a discussion of the various approaches that can be utilized in the study of mine subsidence phenomena. Attention is focused upon the rational selection and use of laboratory models. Broadly interpreted, mine subsidence is the deformation of the rock mass enclosing the mine. Depending upon a number of factors, the movement of the subsiding rock mass may be such as to disrupt gas and water lines or other buried utilities, to damage surface structures such as buildings and bridges, to dislocate streams, roads, and rail lines, to aggravate acid mine drainage and fire problems, and to generally mar the landscape. It is clearly a problem that no mine manager can safely ignore. It is also a problem that will grow with the general population increase. In the following, a summary review of past and present approaches to subsidence studies is given. The possibilities of duplicating subsidence phenomena in laboratory models are examined, and an analysis of a particular type of model is presented. Some preliminary results obtained from a model of the particular type analyzed are then discussed.

Ladies and Gentlemen, There have been no less than ten major coal project financings in the last eighteen months. Each of these has been in the order of $100 million to $1 billion for the development of a coal property and its associated infrastructure. It is appropriate at this time to review the nature of these past financings. Why has there been so much activity? There are primarily two reasons. The first is due to the large number of contracts which were signed as a result of OPEC oil shocks. High projections were made for increased coal consumption particularly in world trade. This is distinct from domestic coal mine/power plant projects which often tap a government source of funds. Second is the high cost of coal development in the 1980's compared with a typical company's corporate borrowing capacity.

Four native copper ores, two conglomerate and two amygdaloidal, were tested to determine their amenability to sorting. One of them, a conglomerate ore from the Kingston mine, showed a high sortability as evidenced by an 80 pct recovery of copper in the minus 6-, plus 1/2-inch size range. Using the Kingston as a case example, the cost of mining and concentrating was estimated for a standard case and five optional cases involving varying degrees of sorting. This analysis indi¬cates that the production cost per pound of copper can be reduced on the order of 1 to 1-1/2 cents per pound along with a significant decrease in capital investment.

Current regulations for fire suppression systems in underground coal mines to protect conveyor belt installations have been in place since the Coal Mine Health and Safety Act of 1969 was enacted. Over time, the coal conveyer equipment being used and ventilation conditions underground have changed significantly, particularly the width of the conveyor belts and the use of belt air at the face. The effect of these new conditions on the effectiveness of suppression systems during a fire is not known. The National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) conducted a study to evaluate the effect of air velocity, water sprinkler activation temperature and a limited water application time on the effectiveness of water sprinkler fire suppression systems to extinguish large-scale conveyor belt fires. The fire tests were conducted using both new and used 1.8-m-wide, fire-resistant rubber belt that met the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) flame-resistant requirement specified in Title 30, Code of Federal Regulations, part 18, section 18.65 (also known as the 2G test). Tests were conducted using standard response sprinklers with activation temperatures of 68° C and 141° C at air velocities of 0.5 and 5.1 m/s. Two tests were conducted at both air velocities for each sprinkler activation temperature, one using a new belt and one with a used belt. The results showed that the suppression system was able to suppress the fires in ten minutes to the point that a miner could extinguish it with a fire hose. However, in several of the tests, the fire reestablished itself a few minutes after the sprinkler water supply was cut off and quickly grew out of control. This report discusses the large-scale experimental configuration, the installation specifications of the fire suppression system and the results and conclusions regarding the effect of air velocity, sprinkler activation temperature and limited water application on the suppression system performance.

Introduction The US has the largest total (364 Gt, or 401 billion st) and recoverable (182 Gt, or 201 billion st) coal reserves in the world (Steam/Its Generation and Use, 1978). However, progressive coal use in this country has been hampered by environmental constraints, such as restrictions on sulfur dioxide, nitrogen oxides, and particulate emissions. Since the promulgation of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) New Source Performance Standards (NSPS), it has become apparent that all US coals will require sulfur removal to comply with the new sulfur dioxide emission levels. If more stringent emission standards are imposed, through pending acid rain legislation or amendments to the Clean Air Act, it is likely that the coal industry, and the industrial and utility sectors will look increasingly toward the development of new and advanced coal cleaning technologies to continue and promote the use of coal. Table 1 summarizes the EPA NSPS for sulfur dioxide emissions. Fortunately, the basis for determining sulfur dioxide removal is the Btu and total sulfur content of the run-of-mine coal. Thus, credit is given for any sulfur removed before combustion, e.g., through physical coal cleaning. Unfortunately, physical coal cleaning alone may be unable to produce a compliance coal with respect to the EPA NSPS. Therefore, all industrial and utility coal-fired boilers will require post combustion gas cleanup, e.g., flue gas desulfurization (FGD), to comply with the new regulations. Of these, chemical coal cleaning offers the advantages of providing (1) high quality fuel for combustion (low sulfur and ash, high Btu, and attenuated product variability); (2) a solid fuel product for use in retrofitted gas and oil boilers; and (3) a solid fuel product with multiple end uses, e.g., internal combustion engines, carbon electrodes, coke, or chemical feedstock. Gravimelt process In the Gravimelt process, 1.4 mm x 0 (14 mesh x 0), physically beneficiated coal of about 5% moisture is fed into a 3401 to 3901 C (644 ° to 734 ° F) molten bath of sodium hydroxide and potassium hydroxide. Organic and pyritic sulfur and most of the mineral matter in coal react with and are dissolved in a molten mixture of potassium hydroxide and sodium hydroxide. The reacted coal sulfur is converted to alkali sulfides and polysulfides, whereas the mineral matter is apparently converted to alkali-aluminum silicates and other byproducts that are water and acid soluble. Coal residence time is 60 to 240 minutes. The sodium hydroxide to potassium hydroxide ratio is about 9:1. The total hydroxide-to-coal ratio is no less than 10:1. The specific gravity of the caustic melt is about 1.8 g/cm3 . Thus, coal is buoyant in the bath, and insoluble mineral matter with density greater than 1.8 g/cm3 would sink. Reacted coal is first water-washed with an equal weight volume of water in a countercurrent mode of operation. The coal is filtered and the filtrate sent for regeneration. The coal is then acid-washed in 10% sulfuric acid. The acid-water/coal mixture is filtered to recover the final coal product, and the filtrate treated with lime to precipitate dissolved mineral matter. The precipitate is filtered from the mixture and discarded. The water is recycled to the plant. Filtrate from water-washing is treated to remove sodium sulfide. The sodium sulfide is chemically treated to produce hydrogen sulfide, calcium car¬bonate, sodium hydroxide, and other products. The hydrogen sulfide is treated to produce sulfuric acid for the acid-washing step. The calcium carbonate is treated further or discarded, and the sodium hydroxide is concentrated by evaporation and recycled to the reactor. The Gravimelt process is currently at the bench-scale stage of development. A 0.9-kg (2-lb) continuous reactor is in operation with a continuous water- and acid-washing section adjacent. The regeneration section is not developed to a meaningful extent, although key reactions have been tested in the laboratory. Process conditions, product recovery efficiencies, etc., however, have not been determined adequately and continuous regeneration operation has not been attempted. Work is now in progress to develop each section to a continuous bench-scale operation in processing coal at 9.1 kg/h (20 lb per hr). Microwave process The carbon and hydrogen in coal are relatively transparent to microwave radiation. However, water, caustic, pyrite, and other mineral matter components are strong conductors of microwave radiation energy at the proper frequency. As a result, selective heating of the noncarbonaceous materials occurs that enables the chemical reaction of sulfur and ash with caustic. Although very high temperatures may result from

An orebody is a mining company's greatest asset; without it there can be no mine. Yet, by the very nature of the industry, orebodies are wasting assets whose progressive depletion must be balanced by continued discovery of new ore to enable both the industry to survive and the raw material demands of society to be satisfied. Although mineral exploration may be viewed as any activity which leads to the creation of investment opportunities in the mineral industry, ultimately new ore can only be generated through discovery. The process leading to discovery may involve a long chain of independent and interdependent events. It will almost always be repetitious and require the examination of many prospects or trials before the goal, a commercially successful discovery, is satisfied. Long term survival of a mining company through regular discovery of new ore, requires a continued commitment of funds and effort to mineral exploration.

[Full-scale laboratory experiments were performed to evaluate the effect of ventilation and water spray pressure on the potential dust capture efficiency of a ventilation system comprised of blowing ventilation and an underboon scrubber. The tests were performed for a 1.52-m (5-ft) roof height and 2.36 m-3/s (5000 cfm) blowing ventilation volume, and a 2.44-m (8-ft) roof height and 4.72 m3/s (10.000 cfm) blowing ventilation volume at three face positions of the miner. The scrubber suction rate was varied for the tests to study the effect of scrubber flow rate on capture efficiency. The airflow patterns and scrubber efficiency were determined by performing tracer gas tests. Tracer gas was released through a manifold placed in front of the rotating miner drum. The gas was sampled in a grid fashion using a real-time multi-point gas sampling system. The capture efficiency of the scrubber was evaluated based an the peak gas concentration of the gas laden air drawn through the scrubber and the amount of gas passing, through the scrubber as a fraction of the gas released at the face. The data were analyzed to yield scrubber peak concentrations, potential exposures at various operator locations and the gas removal percentage (GRP). The underboom scrubber appears to work best in the end sump position, relative to the start sump and start slab positions. The capture efficiency scrubber was higher for 2.44-m (8-ft) roof heights compared to 1.52-m (5-ft) roof heights. The data also showed that the scrubber air discharged behind the mining machine may be drawn into the face area by the action of the blowing ventilation system, resulting in recirculation.]

Homestake Mining Company?s biological wastewater treatment plant has been in full scale operation for over 2 years at the Homestake Mine in Lead, South Dakota.
