Martin County Coal Corporation's operations are located on Wolf Creek in Martin County in the eastern part of Kentucky. The mining complex was started in 1971 and has grown to a 2.273 Mt/a steam coal operation. All of the production goes to Duke Power Company's Belews Creek electric generating station in North Carolina. Production comes from four seams that are mined by deep and surface mining methods. Surface mining accounts for 55% of the production and the remainder comes from 2 underground mines. Continuous miners are used exclusively underground. The preparation plant was originally designed to take coal at the rate of 907 Mt/h but that has gradually been increased to 1134 Mt/h. Other cleaning equipment includes Daniels DMS vessels, Model 77 Deister tables, 355.4-mm R. & S. Hydro- cyclones, Krebs 254-m classifying cyclones, Daniels froth cells and in 1980, 3 Krebs 508-mm heavy media cyclones were added to recover some lost and misplaced material. CMI centrifugaldryers and a Hey1 & Patterson size 100 thermal dryer are also part of the coal preparation equipment.

The effective employment of a pretensioned bolt within support structures requires an appropriate installation tension as a result of sufficient bolt head/nut preload. In this paper, a load indicator washer (LIW) able to withstand an assigned static loading as well as provide an appropriate pretension is presented. The different LIW breadths are numerically analyzed with ABAQUS finite-element code to estimate deformation when a designated 60 kN preload is applied. The numerical simulation employs the bilinear isotropic hardening constitutive law governed by the von Mises yield criterion. The simulation also considers the nominal temperature of the nut-LIW-rock bolt connection. Therefore, long-term relaxation effect on bolt pretension as a result of stress relaxation is neglected. The compressive force required to achieve the LIW predetermined deformation is the bolt pretension. It is drawn from the simulation results that LIWs with thicknesses of 1.5, 2.0, 3.0, 3.5 and 4.0 mm are completely flattened when subjected to 28, 42.5, 65, 76 and 88 kN preloads, respectively.

The olfactory system (sense of smell) is crucial to the ability of fish to avoid predators, recognize kin, and synchronize reproduction (Baldwin et al. 2003). Copper (Cu) has been shown to impair olfaction in juvenile freshwater life stages of salmonids (including Pacific salmon and trout) in some laboratory experiments; and in the United States, public concerns have been expressed that current regulatory criteria for Cu in fresh water are not adequately protective of olfactory function in salmonids (e.g., OSU 2007; Pearson 2007). These concerns have largely been raised because some Cu concentrations that have caused olfactory impairment in salmonids in the laboratory are less than Cu concentrations that have been shown to reduce salmonid survival, growth, or reproduction (the effects endpoints that are typically considered in deriving ambient water quality criteria). However, two important and interrelated points that must be considered: (1) freshwater Cu criteria are "driven" by the sensitivities of several invertebrate species that are more sensitive than the olfactory impairment threshold in salmonids when (2) the influence of water chemistry on Cu bioavailability is properly considered in deriving Cu criteria. Bioavailability refers to the ability of various chemical forms of Cu to interact with receptors on the surface(s) of organisms and thus directly cause toxicity or uptake by the organisms. The toxicity of Cu and other metals to aquatic organisms is a function of water chemistry. For example, acute Cu toxicity in fresh water generally decreases as pH, water hardness (Ca2+ and Mg2+), alkalinity, and dissolved organic carbon (DOC) concentrations increase (Meyer et al. 2007). The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) has recommended hardness-based freshwater aquatic life criteria for Cu and other metals since the 1980s (e.g., USEPA 1985); and hardness-based metals criteria decrease (i.e., become more restrictive) as water hardness decreases. More recently, the USEPA has recommended freshwater aquatic life criteria for Cu based on the biotic ligand model (BLM; USEPA 2007), which accounts for the influence of multiple water chemistry parameters, including DOC, pH, alkalinity, Ca2+, Mg2+, and several other cations and anions. The BLM-based Cu criteria generally decrease as DOC concentration, pH, alkalinity, and water hardness decrease. Because DOC has a stronger influence on Cu bioavailability than water hardness, hardness-based and BLM-based Cu criteria can differ considerably. For example, in water that has low DOC and high hardness, the hardness-based Cu criterion would be relatively high (because it is driven by the high hardness) but the BLM-based Cu criterion would be relatively low (because it is driven by the low DOC). Thus, any evaluation of the protectiveness of Cu criteria against a given effect, such as olfactory impairment, must properly account for the chemistry of the exposure water. Meyer et al. (2013) compiled data on Cu-induced olfactory impairment and olfactory-induced behavioral effects from tests in which BLM parameters were measured. They demonstrated that the USEPA's BLM-based freshwater life criteria for Cu are protective against olfactory impairment, because it adequately accounts for water chemistry (whereas the USEPA's hardness-based Cu criteria are not consistently protective). Olfactory impairment by Cu is now receiving increased attention in Canada and Europe (e.g., Wall 2013; Stang 2013). Accordingly, in this paper we have expanded the analysis of Meyer et al. (2013) to consider copper guidelines from various other countries and whether these guidelines are protective against olfactory impairment.

The reliability of a set of flotation results is key to minimizing project risk, either at the commissioning of a concentrator or at the point of implementing an improvement to an existing concentrator operation. High-confidence flotation testing (HCFT) was developed for this purpose and is part of the list of technologies at various scales used by Xstrata Process Support (XPS) in addressing these projects. The methodology is based on two principles: one, to ensure that the ore sample is representative and has been well-blended and subsampled; two, to perform the flotation tests in sufficient numbers of replicates with appropriate quality controls, so as to improve the reproducibility of the test data. Across ten years of research on this methodology at Xstrata Process Support, Sudbury, several improvements to the HCFT method and complementary connections between sampling and quantitative mineralogy have been developed. Two case studies are reviewed. These show the capability of this system in both optimizing an existing concentrator operation and in serving a new mine scenario. My topic today is our Nation's interest in the minerals beneath the oceans. I will state what I think should be our objectives, the means available to attain these objectives, and the obstacles to their accomplishment. It is possible that as early as this year of 1969 our country must make policy decisions on this subject, and that these, once made, will be almost irreversible. Two factors are hastening an. early decision. First, the 1958 Convention on the Continental Shelf becomes eligible for amendment after June 10, 1969, if the Assembly of the United Nations so decides. Second, the United Nations has created a permanent committee of 42 nations, which was preceded by an ad hoc committee of 35 nations, to study the question of the peaceful uses of the seabed "beyond the limits of national jurisdiction. While these measures purport to deal with the creation of a regime to govern mineral development on the deep sea floor beyond the limits of the jurisdiction of the coastal nations, it has become clear that the urgent issue is the extent to which this future regime shall acquire jurisdiction over the mineral resources of the continental margin, and receive royalties therefrom. This brings the proposal into potential collision with the interests of the coastal nations under the 1958 Convention on the Continental Shelf, including, of course, the United States.

The Meikle Mine is located in the northeastern part of Nevada in the gold-rich Carlin Trend. First discovered in 1989, Meikle is being developed into a 2.2-kt/d (2,500-stpd) underground mine that will open during the second half of 1996. Work has already been completed on the mine’s cooling plant, a necessary item due to the high rock temperature and the hot ground water. In North American mines, there has been little need for refrigerated cooling. Therefore, Barrick needed to draw on experience from elsewhere in the world — particularly South Africa — to meet these requirements. The history of cooling mines using mechanical refrigeration dates back to the 1920s at Morro Velho in Brazil and 1936 at Ooregum in India (Dobson,1940 and Biccard, 1946). From 1940 to 1960, several cooling plants were installed on the deep level gold mines on the Witwatersrand in South Africa. These were followed by similar installations on the mines in the Klerksdorp, Welkom, Evander, Rustenburg and Thabazimbi areas. The first mine cooling plant in Germany was built during 1976.

"More than 800 million tons of material will be excavated during large underground projects such as tunnels, undergrounds and power plants by 2030 in Europe only. The raw material excavated is often classified as waste, which involves environmental impact and transport issues: landfill areas, CO2 emissions and noise. But how can such massive amounts of material be transported, processed and deposited? Using the example of the AlpTransit Ceneri Base Tunnel (15.4 km), we show that suitable excavated materials can be used sustainably as a primary resource for tunnel concrete. This requires careful planning of the installations and storage areas by the client, timely building of the processing plants and other handling facilities outside the tunnel and a continuous evaluation of the raw material quality. 1. INTRODUCTION Spoil management is a central element of large construction projects. The systematic reuse of suitable excavated material not only saves natural resources, reduces transport distances and landfill volume, but can also decrease overall construction costs. Ideally, all of the concrete needed for tunnel lining can be produced with this on-site material. Such a natural resource management concept was applied for the construction of the new Gotthard Base Tunnel (L = 57 km). Spoil management concepts are, how-ever, difficult to implement and call for innovative techniques, sophisticated logistics and organization. In the context of large projects, environmentally friendly transport, processing and storage of millions of tons of excavated loose material represent another logistics challenge (Simmen & Lieb, 2010). This paper shows key factors that led to the successful completion of spoil management at the Ceneri Base Tunnel, which constitutes a part of the AlpTransit Gotthard Project (Figure 1)."

The Fort Cady in situ borate-mining project involves recovering boron from a deposit more than 400 m (1,300 ft) below the surface. The resource recovery method is a new in situ mining technology that uses weak acid solution injected directly into the ore body. As the acid contacts the calcium-based ore (primarily natural colemanite), the contained borate values are digested as boric acid. This boric acid solution is then pumped to the surface by submersible pumps. A series of chemical reactions and precipitations are performed that result in the production of calcium borate. The borate values are then recovered as a finely divided solid white powder. The refined product is sold under the trade name Cadycal 100. The Fort Cady in situ borate-mining project is located about halfway between Los Angeles, CA and Las Vegas, NV in the Mohave Desert.

In this work, the selective reduction of lateritic nickel ore was carried out using sodium sulfate, sodium carbonate, and sodium chloride as additives. The 5 wt% of anthracite coal, which contains 60.35% of fixed carbon and 1.9% of sulfur, was used as a reductant. All raw materials were mixed homogenously prior to the pelletization process into 10–15 mm of diameter. The reduction process was carried out to 50 g of pellets at 950 °C, 1050 °C, and 1150 °C for 60 min in a muffle furnace at atmospheric pressure. It continued with a wet magnetic separation process to separate ferronickel (concentrates) and impurities (tailings). Iron and nickel grade analysis was performed using XRF, while phase transformation and microstructure were analyzed with XRD and SEM–EDS. The results showed that the sodium sulfate was superior, resulting in the highest nickel grade in concentrate, i.e., 15.06%. The sulfidation mechanism, which could inhibit the metallization of iron, effectively increased the nickel grade in concentrate than decomposition of carbonate and chloridization process. The sulfur content in the reductant also influenced the selective reduction process. It promotes more sulfidation of iron, thus increasing the nickel grade in concentrate.

The prime movers of the Centralia Project, the surface coal mine and the power plant, private utilities are very aware of public attitudes. They have established and maintain the reputation for leadership in public service and are genuinely concerned that this project initiate the pro-grams and design the hardware to answer the question :What will be the impact of the mine and the plant on the physical environment, i.e., the air, soil and the water." So in the beginning almost as soon as the decision had been made to go ahead with the project, officials of the two private utilities, Washington Water Power and Pacific Power & Light went on record and publicly stated time and again that the overall approach of the Operators would be to do all that was reasonably possible to safeguard the environment. This attitude became part of the thinking of the project planners, part of the design of the power plant and part of the plan for the surface mine. The coal to be mined is from the Skookumchuck formation. The formation is Late Eocene and is made up of poorly consolidated marine and non-marine deposits. The major overburden removal equipment is a bucket-wheel excavator -conveyor system and a 56 yard dragline. Mining of the coal will be done with truck and shovel. The coal is processed, washed and crushed to 1 ¼ " for delivery to the power plant. The muddy water created by the washing process is chemically treated and the solids removed by a thickener-vacuum filter system.

The traditional approach to safety clearance monitoring and proper PPE usage in underground mines is time-consuming, costly, and susceptible to negligence. However, automated real-time monitoring can be implemented using computer vision-based approaches. This study aims to develop a system that provides timely information based on the automatic detection of proper PPE use and safety clearance in underground mines. Deep learning and a decentralized computing structure between the cloud and sensing devices (fog technology) are used. We hypothesize that a camera-based system can provide near real-time assessment of proper PPE use and verified clearance to access restricted areas in underground mines.

The natural tendency for each party to consider only its legitimate self interests can lead to delays or deadlocks. The paper presents several viewpoints aimed at opening each party's mind to the ideas of others in the hope that negotiations might be more reasonable and rapid for the benefit of all concerned.

This paper will review several projects completed during the period from 1976 through 1984 which have been carried out utilizing big hole drilling concepts. The projects discussed will be from various industries to demonstrate the extent that big hole drilling methods are being used along with the current state of development. There will be a discussion of projects planned for the future where big hole drilling methods are the only technology being considered. Also included in the discussions will be an overview of the most recently completed heavy oil recovery project. During the next decade, big hole drilling methods will be used more and more in all industries where underground access is required. The safety, speed and economics associated with shaft sinking using drilling methods are becoming more and more recognized and the technology is rapidly becoming an accepted shaft sinking method.

After almost 60 years of application in this country froth flotation is still by far the most important process for concentrating metallic ores as well as a number of nonmetallic ores including fluorspar, phosphate rock, and potash. Its use on iron ores and coal is increasing. In the metals groups the largest plants and the greatest progress are found in copper and molybdenum mills, and the section of this paper that deals with applications will be found most pertinent to that field. During its long reign the flotation process has passed through several phases of evolution and has achieved progress in economy, efficiency, and simplicity of operation. Much of today's success in the flotation of low-grade ores can be attributed to that progress. Even more important to us than our ability to cope with today's conditions are tomorrow's problems, which we can contemplate with some prescience and confidence. Our annual production of copper, lead, zinc, and molybdenum--to mention only the most important metals occurring in the U.S. as sulphides--must be held at a high level in the face of a declining grade of ore. It is probable that the tonnage of such ores mined and processed will double in this country before the turn of the century. Not only will many of the existing flotation mills be enlarged again and again, but larger mills will be built here and abroad to meet our needs. At this moment, in fact, there are at least three proposed new foreign mills or expansions that envision 100,000 tons daily milling rate on copper ores. Table I (1) shows the trend in copper ore grades in U.S. in recent years:

First of all, I want to thank John Dunlap for asking me to this AIME meeting in Denver. I was first introduced to Denver and The Rocky Mountains more than ten years ago and immediately decided it was one of the most attractive spots in the world. I've come back many times since and still welcome any opportunity to return, even if it means I have to prepare and give a paper on potash. When John Dunlap gave me this assignment, he told me that the program would include papers on the geology of potash, papers on new discovered potash deposits and new mines and asked me to discuss potash from the commercial point of view. He also asked me to include a supply/demand outlook for potash. However, one thing he did not mention was "how far into the future he wanted me to look" and it seems to me the time element is a crucial factor to you who are both geologists and miners as well as to me. In your case, you have to look far enough into the future to give you time to explore, find, evaluate, develop, and bring into production a commercial deposit. My mining associates and friends don't agree on how long that takes but it's probably somewhere in the range of eight to fifteen years. But, they all agree on one thing and that is that the time required is continually getting longer. Now my time problem is just the opposite. It is "relatively" easy, and I stress relatively, to identify and evaluate the importance of the various factors that impact on both the supply of and demand for a commodity such as potash if the time period is today. It gets a little tough if one has to project into tomorrow or next week or next month. And when we start talking in terms of a year, five years or ten or fifteen years, things really get sticky and the old crystal ball becomes mighty cloudy. But we economists and forecasters are not known for our temerity so let me get on with the job at hand and take a look at the world potash supply/demand outlook.

An 18.5 km (12 mile) long tunnel is being driven by four Earth Pressure Balance Tunnel Boring Machines (EPB-TBMs) of 4.7 m (15.5 ft.) diameter through alluvial sand, gravel, silt and clay above and below the groundwater table in Los Angeles beneath buildings, railroads, freeways and the L.A. River. Continuous automatic data recording of TBM operation and field inspectors' records, accompanied by monitoring of 5,000 surface reference points and 268 borehole extensometers were used to obtain information. The paper explains the reason for selecting the method of EPB-tunneling to ensure stability of the tunnel and meeting of environmental requirements, and presents data collected to monitor and demonstrate the performance of the TBM sin the different ground conditions encountered.

The emerging importance of pneumatic conveying systems for bulk materials is becoming recognized by more persons responsible for materials management as consultants, at the corporate level and at the plant level. They have learned that the economic advantages of a pneumatic system are frequently decisive when compared to alternate methods. Included in these advantages are relative simplicity, ease of installation, flexibility, ease of maintenance, cleanliness, safety and ease of automation to the degree desired. In general, installed costs favor a pneumatic system when compared to competing mechanical systems if the transporting distances are long or to and from many points. In addition, supplemental use such as cooling, heating, or drying may supply the incremental value required to justify its selection. (1). The main disadvantages of a pneumatic system is the greater horsepower required per unit weight of material conveyed and material limits in abrasiveness and density. In addition, there is a tendency to increase material breakage at changes of direction and at any obstruction such as the imperfect butting of one, piece of pipe to another in the conveying line. Classification of the material at the discharge may also cause problems in dusting and segregation. Materials weighing less than 4 pounds per cubic foot tend to cause feeding and collecting problems although they can be conveyed easily. Material between 4 and 20 pounds per cubic foot can be handled with less problems but flow rate is hard to predict. The 20 to 60 pounds per cubic foot range offers best results; whereas, over 60 pounds per cubic foot, materials tend to drop out of the air stream and settle in the pipe line unless careful provisions are made to prevent it. The Cable belt Company has been building single flight conveyors for a number of years. The simple design concepts of this type conveyor, introduced over thirty years ago, when distances of one to two miles were considered major advances in technology, remain relatively unchanged. Conveyors that are 6 to 20 miles (9.0 to 32 kilometers) long are being built and are presently in operation through- out the free world. The Cable Belt conveyor is not conventional in its construction. Cable welt differs from conventional troughed idler conveyors in that the driving medium and carrying medium are separated. Motion is provided by two endless steel cables running the length of the conveyor. The cables are driven by a single drive unit incorporating a differential gear which insures identical cable linear speeds and equal tension in both cables at all times. The belting is located and supported by "V" shaped shoeforms moulded to the belt which form a wedging action. The friction between the belting and rope is sufficient to prevent slippage (See figure 01).

Cortez Gold Mine (C.G.M.) is located in Lander County, Nevada, approximately 80 miles southwest of Elko, Nevada. It is accessed via Nevada State Highway 306 south from Interstate 80. This operation is a joint venture between Placer Dome U. S. Inc. (60% operator) and Kennecott Corporation (40%). The claims which supply oxide and refractory ore feed to the Cortez milling facility are located in both Lander and Eureka Counties. These include the Cortez and Horse Canyon deposits all operated by C.G.M. Joint Venture. Other deposits outside the C.G.M. claim area include; Fire Creek, Buckhorn, Gold Bar and Tonkin Springs. These deposits all occur along the Battle Mountain/Eureka Trend.

Startup of a new plant is a very interesting time. It generally is also a very demanding and often frustrating period. Startup problems can become serious ii they impede the early achievement of full plant production. Raw materials are wasted, manpower is unproductive, field modifications can be extremely expensive and market commitments may not be met. This paper outlines a well proven and highly successful approach to eliminating many of the problems and frustrations often experienced in plant startup. The procedures and methods summarized in the following paragraphs have been developed over a period of 25 years during which some 90 plants were started up.
