A new coal interface detection (CID) method is under investigation by the U.S. Bureau of Mines. This novel concept is based on utilizing a passive infrared system (FIR) to measure temperature changes associated with the cutting of coal and adjacent strata. For this method to work successfully, a definite mechanical/hardness contrast must exist between coal and rock. Advantages include that FIR responds instantaneously at the coal-rock interface and it is minimally affected by dust and/or water sprays. Based on preliminary tests, results indicate that the PIR method can be applied successfully in mines having a hard immediate roof.

Stemming plugs are used as an accessory in drilling and blasting industry. They supplement conventional stemming material (i.e. drill cutting) with retention of gases in the drill hole that result in better fragmentation of rock and improved explosive utilization. Better fragmentation and explosive utilization along with economic benefits enhance efficacy of the project. Incorporation of stemming plugs in drilling and blasting industry is in exercise for about thirty years. The efficiency of stemming plugs is a key factor in their rising induction in mining industry. Different studies have been conducted on the economic viability of these plugs. The focus of this paper is the selection of stemming plugs for a bench blasting operation and the examination of blasting operation efficiency based on ergonomics and human factors. Three types of stemming plugs were evaluated during multiple blasts at a limestone quarry. Their performance was evaluated using split desktop software. Based on the human factors plastic molded stemming plug (stemming plug-1) was found to be the best among all selected plugs. INTRODUCTION Surface mines and quarrying operations heavily depend on bench blasting to achieve high volumetric targets and production demands. Use of explosives is the most economic method adopted for rock breakage and movement. Extensive research had been performed to enhance explosives energy utilization. This include changing the drilling pattern, application of air decks, stemming plugs, and use of other supportive devices. Optimization of explosive energy has been a major concern in those mines that rely on drilling and blasting operation to carry out main production. Due to continually increasing cost, efficient mining demands, and associated hazards of using explosives, it is necessary to utilize explosives at their best. Efficiency of a blasting operation is generally evaluated by the fragmentation size. From post blast conditions at blasting site to efficiency of processing plant, anything can be affected due to improper blast resulting in bad fragmentation. Better fragmentation is necessity for better operation of the system along with consideration of the safety of operation, environmental issues and related costs. For developing a blast design, an engineer should always attempt to minimize the cost of operation without compromising with acceptable technical and safety necessities [1]. Blast performance is dependent on many different factors associated with the process. These factors have been gauged as blast geometry, explosive specification, and rock mass properties [2]. Similarly, in 2013 Mohammad et al. concluded that fragmentation dynamics depends on blast hole diameter, primer, spacing, stemming, burden, and delay timing for blasting operation [1]. At the work site where this study was performed, blast holes were filled by drill cuttings and muds to help in confining gases. In a blast hole, gas confinement helps in better rock fragmentation along with reduced flyrocks. This practice is most common in many countries including Pakistan. Due to lack of homogenized particle size, the effectiveness of confinement is variable and majorly based on the size of stemming. Extremely small sized drill cuttings often result in hole blow out along with flyrocks from the collar. This improper blast energy will result in poor blast, bad impacts on environment, and reduced operational efficiency. In addition to the stemming material, the length of stemming is also a prime consideration. The decrease in stemming length will increase the quantity of explosive in the blast hole and an increase in stemming material generally improves stemming performance.

"The Central Subway is Phase 2 of the San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency’s (SFMTA) Third Street Light Rail project and will extend the existing Phase 1 initial operating segment from its current connection to the Embarcadero line at Fourth and King streets along Fourth Street to Market Street, under the Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) and Muni Metro tunnels and then north beneath Stockton Street to Chinatown (Fig. 1).Total new track to be constructed as part of the Phase 2 work consists of approximately 734 m (2,410 ft) of surface track and 2,636 m (8,650 ft) of tunnels. The tunnels were constructed as twin, singletrack bores by two tunnel boring machines (TBMs) (Johnson, 2014) moving north from the southern end of the launch box under the I 80 freeway between Bryant and Harrison streets. North of Chinatown Station the TBMs continued another approximately 683 m (2,240 ft) to a retrieval shaft near Columbus Ave. at Washington Square. The project also includes five cross passages to connect the two tunnels, and three underground stations (the Yerba Buena/ Moscone Station, Union Square/Market Street Station and Chinatown Station.)Excavation of the twin tunnels was performed with two TBMs, with both TBMs driving northward from the launch box. TBM excavation was performed such that the location of the machines was staggered to separate the active excavation faces by a minimum of 91 m (300 ft) between headings. This minimum separation was maintained until the first TBM arrived at the retrieval shaft plug, at which time the separation requirement was relaxed.Excavation began with the “southbound” (SB) tunnel which will ultimately accommodate the southbound TBM light rail trains followed by the second TBM in the “northbound” (NB) tunnel. With the completion of the drives in June 2014, cross passage excavation then began and was completed in April 2015. Overall, construction of the Central Subway tunnels was a success considering the nature and complexity of the project. Additional details of the completion of the Central Subway tunnels are presented in another paper from the RETC 2015 conference (Leong et al., 2015)."

Good afternoon gentlemen. It is always a pleasure to talk about a subject dear to our hearts--the high speed transfer of bull; materials. Specifically, today we will be reviewing the engineering approach to an age old problem of ship loading and unloading. You may be puzzled by the title of this paper and we will attempt to explain this for you--particularly the use of the words "New Era", since high speed automated facilities are nothing new to the material handling engineer. The new era in material handling designs refers to an all out concerted effort to provide custom engineering tailored to specific operations and economic requirements of the client. It shuns hardware type of engineering wherein existing machines and devices are dusted off and reapplied. It provides automation when automation can be justified and it exemplifies the application of systems engineering to solve specific problems.

The logic and importance of marketing in the industrial minerals industry is generally recognized by those of us intimately involved in this industry. The illogical instances where marketing is ignored in evaluating projects or poorly implemented in operations are also well known. The interplay between these two extremes is interesting territory and is explored commencing with a logical progression of a metal mine that became an industrial minerals mine and ending with the most illogical and failure-prone decision common to the minerals industry today. This paper will demonstrate how: 1. A logical progression of marketing expertise can result in previously unseen benefits to a minerals venture. 2. Logic can turn to illogic due to market conditions and price fluctuations. 3. How operations can turn marketing logic into illogical results. 4. Short term "logic" is often illogical.

The number of extended cut mining systems has increased significantly in coal mines over the last decade, and there is a constant push to extend the face ventilation systems to even greater setback distances. The need to maintain airflow at setback distances of12.2 m (40 ft) and beyond requires that methods for delivering intake air to the face be improved, or alternative ventilation techniques be implemented. The emphasis of this research effort was to examine various techniques to improve the distribution of available air at the mining face in order to reduce face methane levels. A study was conducted comparing the performance of a jet fan, used in conjunction with a machine mounted scrubber, with blowing curtain ventilation in a 27.5 m (90 ft) heading. In addition, a second study was performed on blowing curtain systems examining how scrubber flow, intake air velocity, and curtain setback influence face methane concentrations. Results showed that when the heading advances to a depth of 27.5 m (90 ft) blowing curtain systems were more efficient at diluting face methane levels when compared to a jet fan. Also, increases in scrubber flows and curtain velocity resulted in lower face methane concentrations for blowing curtain systems at 9.2 and 15.2 m (30 and 50 ft) setbacks.

During the past 50 years, significant research has been performed in the ecology and physiology of plants that colonize soils containing elevated concentrations of heavy metals. Similar work has also been performed on plants that are able to survive acidic and saline environments. Efforts have focused on the ecological analysis of plant communities that occur over a range of metalliferous mining wastes. Investigations have been performed on the mechanisms that allow selected varieties of plant species to survive in normally phytotoxic environments and on the potential applications of metal-tolerant varieties of plant species. The purpose is the remediation and reclamation of mining wastes and soils that contain unusually high concentrations of so-called heavy metals. Characteristics of some mineral wastes Metalliferous mining wastes present special environmental restoration problems because of their toxicity. Potential toxicities are mostly caused by residual metals derived from weathering of low-grade ore or the waste products of mineral processing. In cases where pyrite forms a part of the mining waste, acid generation by oxidation may exacerbate the toxicity problem by promoting heavy-metal mobilization in aqueous solution.

In 1963, a major expansion program at Kennecott's Bingham Canyon mine converted rail operation in the upper portion of the pit to truck haulage. Since that time truck-haulage capacity has increased to about 272 000 Mg (300,000 tons) per day. The majority of this production is waste material which is deposited in monolithic dumps located on the eastern slopes of the Oquirrh Mountains. The largest of these dumps, referred to as Copper Notch and Keystone, measures approximately 1830 m (6000 ft) in length, from 180 to 300 m (600 to 1000 ft) in height, and contains some 430 Tg (470 mil lion tons) of waste. The height, structure, rapid rate of growth, and anticipated leaching suggested the possibility of dump failure. In order to evaluate this possibility, an outside consulting firm was retained in 1966 to investigate the stability of the growing dumps. Their investigation indicated that, other than superficial movement, the waste dumps would be stable under static loading, and that soil distribution was not continuous enough to sustain massive foundation failure. Since this investigation, however, several failure processes have been observed. Crest settlement occurs frequently in response to compaction and over-steepening in the upper portion of the dump surface. Over-steepening results from accumulation of fines near the crest caused by natural segregation. Normally, coarse material, near the base of the dump, exhibits an angle of repose near 0.65 rad (37"). The fine material, however, stands as steep as 0.75 rad (40"). Periodic equilibrium adjustments cause stepwise settlement (Figure 1) of the dump surface and occasional sloughing of the protective berm. Routine surface preparation by dozers and graders and frequent inspections by supervisory personnel have proven adequate in preventing problems associated with this form of crest instability.

Tunnel boring machine (TBM) has been in focus for the last few decades and is currently the most preferred excavation method for metro, hydro and irrigation tunnels. Tunnelling in hard and abrasive rock conditions, in particular, is adversely affected by a very low advance rate coupled with increased TBM disc cutter failures and cutterhead jamming, seeking an in-depth understanding of the design and operational processes of the boring components of the TBM. The cutterhead and disc cutter are the critical boring components of the machine, influencing the boring process significantly. These components directly interact with the rock and hugely influence the machine’s efficiency. This paper encapsulates a review of prior studies related to disc cutter design and the cutterhead design for hard rock TBM tunnelling. A design methodology for designing and selecting a disc cutter and a cutterhead is suggested. The design methodology has been applied for a hard rock tunnelling case, and suitable design specifications for the boring components were arrived at. The disc cutter and cutterhead specifications designed based on the suggested methodology closely match with that of deployed TBM specifications. It may be observed that except for the case of high-strength and high-abrasive rock (greyish quartzite), for the rest of the rocks, the suggested design can meet the desired advance rates.

Flotation columns are widely used in mineral processing and coal preparation industry today. Mathematical modeling of flotation columns has conventionally been done using axial dispersion or tank-in-series models. However, for design and scale up purposes these models are not adequate enough because they do not provide detailed information of the flow fields within the column. This paper presents a Two-Dimensional, Two-Phase. Fluid-dynamic Model and its numerical solutions for some cases encountered in column flotation. The MAC (Marker and Cell) method was employed to obtain the numerical solutions, and based on this method a computer code COLUMNFLOW was developed. The simulated flow field reveals the presence of a circulation flow structure in flotation columns, which could be one of the main reasons for mixing in column flotation. The effects of some parameters such as superficial gas and liquid velocities on the characteristics of the flow structure in flotation columns were also tested with the numerical model.

During the past three years, coal samples covering a range of coal rank, ash content, size consist, grindability, and moisture content have been tested for their flow properties using a triaxial shear tester that measures the unconfined yield strength in a compressed sample of coal. The ratio of this unconfined yield strength to the sample bulk density is part of the equation used by handling system manufacturers to calculate the critical arching or critical ratholing diameter needed to ensure that coal will flow from bunkers or bins. This ratio also serves as an index to compare the flow tested. To test the applicability of the index to predicting problems with coal flow, a series of tests were conducted at CO Inc.'s Coal Quality Development Center (CQDC) in Homer City, Pennsylvania. Tests covering ranges in size consist, moisture content, and ash content were conducted by first filling a small two-ton bin with coal and then emptying the bin at a pre-set discharge rate. The actual discharge rate from the bin under the various conditions tested was measured. Samples of the coal discharging from the bin were collected. One sample was analyzed for ash, moisture, and size consist; another sample was sent to the Iowa state University for trivial shear tests (supplying an index measurement). Actual flowability results from the bin were then compared to the measured index to determine the applicability of the handleability index in actually predicting coal flow problems. This paper describes the correlation between handleability index and bin flow and explains the next stages of the project.

"What is your history and how did you get involved in mining?Like many SME members, I came from a mining community with a family history in mining, in my case Walkerville, MT. Both of my grandfathers were underground miners. My father was a miner for a short time. He later sold drinks to the miners. Unfathomable by today’s standards, my dad would pick up the miners’ checks at the pay office and have them cashed and waiting with a shot and beer for the miners when their shift ended. My mother was a nurse, who from time to time, would patch up an unfortunate miner. I remember walking past multiple picket lines on the way to and from grade school, watching homes being boarded-up. I grew up with a deep respect for the critical relationship between labor and management.I had no intention of going into mining and initially set out to pursue a career in chemical engineering. But I attended my first two years of engineering at Montana Tech, due to the proximity and affordability. This is where I met Dr. Tom Finch, a mining professor who taught statics to the engineering students. After a coaching session in a hallway, half way through my sophomore year, I switched to mineral processing engineering. In his colorful way, Professor Finch advised me that, “You do not want to make #@*!! erasers and #@*!! Jell-O the rest of your life go talk to the guys in mineral processing.” He was very persuasive and here I am today.How about your involvement with SME?I encountered SME out of school and a little later in my career. Terry Maio and Jim Arnold invited me to local section meetings in the Missouri Lead Belt. That was my first exposure to the technical programming and relationship building that was possible at the local level. After Ozark Lead shut down and I relocated to Nevada, Rich Johnson, Scott Barr and Dave Collins encouraged me to attend my first annual meeting in Salt Lake City, UT. I joined SME at that time and was fortunate to be engaged by members like Art Schweizer and Jim Arnold, and I soon began the leadership progression for the Mineral & Metallurgical Processing Division. Since then, I have supported SME at the national and the local level serving in multiple roles and capacities."

In efforts to improve ingress/egress from the existing subway platforms in PATH’s Exchange Place Station, a new 18-foot horseshoe cross-passage tunnel was constructed by Walsh Construction who retained Kilduff Underground Engineering for design of the initial support system and to install and maintain geotechnical instrumentation. The project presented some unique challenges as a result of the proximity to pedestrians on the platform. PATH service remained uninterrupted, limiting the Contractor to mechanical means of excavation to advance the heading. The logistics proved very challenging for the approximate 100-foot-long tunnel excavated in soft Manhattan Schist. This paper will present the design and construction challenges for the project.

The Candelaria copper-gold deposit is located in Region m of Chile, 805 kilometers north of the capital, Santiago. Candelaria was discovered in 1987, following a six month exploration program. In late 1986, induced polarization (IP) surveys outlined an anomalously high response within the area of interest. The first test hole bad three intersections totaling 49 meters, with an average grade of 1.97% copper. Drilling eventually outlined approximately 390 million tonnes, grading 1.09010 copper and 0.26 grams/tonne gold. Production began in early 1995 and is estimated at 120,000 tonnes copper and 80,000 ounces gold annually.

Rock damage around underground excavations has been an important hazard in mines and tunnels. Rock dilation generates buckling that needs to be contained before it causes damage to equipment or safety concerns to mine workers. In seismically active mines, rockburst occurrence has been widely recognized as one of the most important hazards in deep mines and tunnels. While there is a wide range of cases where rockburst hazard can be mitigated through dedicated excavation sequences, reentry procedures or exclusion zones, there are still many situations where large unexpected rockbursting may occur, relying only on rock support as the last mitigation measure to prevent production and safety losses. Considering the previous situations, surface support as mesh, plays a major role containing the failed/ejected rock and providing a safe working environment to the underground operations. While there have been considerable achievements in improving mesh resistance, with more than 26Kj/m2 of energy dissipation capacity, there is still a lack of research in the overlapping mechanism and load transfer between contiguous mesh elements. This paper presents the state of the art in static and dynamic analysis of welded and rolled mesh overlaps, based on experimentation carried on by Geobrugg in their Research Center, leaving clearly established that the difference in meshes is not only in levels of energy absorption, but also concluding that in the case of high resistance rolled meshes overlapping is not necessary and the transmission of stresses can be fully guaranteed by using suitable connecting elements. All these characteristics, supported by operational advantages as light weight and mechanized mesh installation, provides a considerable improvement in safety and productivity, improving the economic value of the project

Locus Mining is working side-by-side with a prestigious iron ore company to evaluate the addition of Locus ESG-friendly green flotation reagents with the primary goal of improving recovery and grade. In this paper, we will focus on the cationic reverse flotation application. The most “established industry” reagents for cationic reverse flotation are amine as the collector, starch as the depressant, and in some cases frothers are also used (among them MIBC, pine oil, others). Here, we evaluate the synergies of different classes of eco-friendly biosurfactants and industry-standard reagents during the cationic reverse flotation method. Exploratory research was done first with an analog sample under different pHs, eight different biosurfactants with starch and no-starch, and a customized DOE was used to perform 145 microflotation tests. The results show Separation Efficiency from 20% (baseline) to 50% (biosurfactant), and Selectivity from 3.27 (baseline) to 5.67 (biosurfactant). Optimized result conditions were then applied to the iron ore samples received from our client to perform flotation tests on a Denver Lab cell. Similar results were obtained by improving Separation Efficiency and Selectivity, which corroborate with the previous work.

GENERAL DESCRIPTION The undercut-and-fill method of mining was devel¬oped by Inco Ltd. in the Sudbury district of Ontario, Canada, to deal with abnormal ground conditions en¬countered in pillar recovery. Although it is now some¬times utilized as a primary stoping method, the main application continues to be in pillar recovery. In any mining method in which fill is employed, pillar systems tend to fail gradually as stoping pro¬gresses. As a result, most pillars are completely destressed and broken by the time pillar recovery com¬mences. Control of the back in such ground becomes a major problem and is contingent on local conditions as they exist in the workplace. In most mining methods, operations such as drilling, blasting, slushing, and tim¬bering can be readily assessed and the mining cycle pre¬dicted. However, in the mining of pillars with overhand methods, the time and effort required to maintain a safe back varies to a quite unpredictable extent. For years the square-set method was the most effective means available for pillar recovery. However, in areas where bad ground was encountered, square setting was a costly and sometimes hazardous method. As the tonnage mined from pillars increased, it was apparent that a safer and less expensive approach was required. Past experience indicated that the best way to deal with broken ground was to mine from the top down. Top slicing systems were examined but were rejected due to the major sub¬sidence which resulted. However, ideas generated from studying top slicing finally developed into the present method of undercut-and-fill. This method, which has almost completely replaced square-set mining, exhibits reduced costs, has improved safety and efficiency, elimi¬nates the factor of bad ground overhead, and allows a closer prediction of the actual mining cycle. The result is more accurate scheduling of pillar production. This factor is of increasing importance as the tonnage from pillar recovery increases in relation to total mine pro¬duction. Undercut-and-fill is a method of extracting a block of ore by mining successive cuts, working from the top down. After a cut of ore is completely mined out, lami¬nated timber stringers are constructed along the sides for the full length of the cut. Round logs covered by a wire screen are laid across the stringers to form a mat. The cut is then tightly filled with hydraulically placed cemented sand fill. Mining is then resumed on the cut immediately below the mat. As the cut advances, the timber stringers are supported by round timber posts seated on the solid bottom of the cut. Drilling, blasting, muck removal, and timbering operations are repeated until all the ore in the cut has been removed. At this time, another log mat is laid and the cut is filled. This sequence is continued until the block has been mined from level to level. The basic principles of undercut-and-fill can be adapted to a variety of mining situations. It can be applied transversely or longitudinally in ore bodies of varying width, that dip from vertical to flat lying. The method can be applied using conventional equipment or it can be mechanized through the introduction of small diesel or air-powered units for muck removal. Undercut¬and-fill is a selective method, ore recovery is high, and dilution can be controlled to an acceptable level. How¬ever, it is a high-cost, labor-intensive method and as such its use is restricted to areas where the less costly meth¬ods of ground support are not successful or where bulk mining methods are not adaptable. One basic require¬ment for undercut-and-fill is an adequate source of hydraulically placed cemented sand fill and a dependable sand plant and distribution system. The success of the undercut method is to a large degree dependent on the competence of the fill placed in each of the successive cuts. In theory, the weight of the fill on each cut is supported in part by the cemented sand itself as it binds to the rough sides of the mined¬out areas next to the pillar walls, and in part by the tim¬ber support. As mining progresses beneath the mat, a downward pressure is exerted within the cemented fill and a voussoir arch develops above the mat, across the full width of the cut. This supports the major portion of the load. The log mat and posts have a double func¬tion in that they carry the remaining weight not sup¬ported by the voussoir arch and in addition prevent any pronounced settling of the fill mass. Excessive settling breaks the bond between the cemented fill and the pillar walls, eliminating the arch effect and transferring the entire load to the mat and posts. The theory of a voussoir arch forming within the cemented sand fill mass is substantiated in practice by the fact that pillars have been mined from level to level with no more significant weight on the bottom cuts than was experienced on the top cuts. In effect, as mining progresses downward, there is no additional transfer of weight from previous cuts to the cut being mined. APPLICATION OF UNDERCUT-AND-FILL Because of their size, the Sudbury ore bodies are, for the most part, mined transversely and, to a considerable extent, by filling methods. Transverse stoping blocks are designed with 9-m (30-ft) crown pillars established be¬low each level and with stopes separated by vertical rib pillars. In past years, floor pillars were left above the level as well, but present practice favors the silling of primary stopes at the base of the rail. Rib pillars are designed to meet the ground control requirements of the primary stoping methods. Local conditions and past experience generally dictate their size. Historically, since the square-set method was to be used for recovery, rib pillars were designed to accommo¬date standard 1.7-m (5'h-ft) sets. A typical rib pillar is four sets wide [6.7 m (22 ft)] when located between two square-set or cut-and-fill stopes having a width of 8.4 m (27.5 ft). The numbers tell the story of this one. More than 50,000 people and 1,890 exhibitors took over the Las Vegas Convention Center Sept. 24-26 for the largest mining trade show in the world ? MINExpo. Inside the convention center, some of the largest machines used in mining were on display. Caterpillar, Liebherr, Komatsu and Hitachi displayed ultraclass offroad mining trucks and shovels. Atlas Copco and Schramm were among companies that rolled in mining drills and Bridgestone, Goodyear and Michelin were among the companies showing off the massive tires used by the trucks. Throughout the three halls and an outdoor display area, just about every kind of product, gadget or service used in the mining industry could be found on display somewhere.
