When multiple mines operate in an area there are social, economic and environmental impacts which cumulate over space and time. These impacts require special attention. A collective approach is required to identify, assess and manage them. No assessment of sustainability of mining can be considered complete without accounting for cumulative impacts. This paper proposes a framework and typology to deal with cumulative impacts and tests this in a coal mining area in NSW Australia.

INTRODUCTION In open-pit mining of high grade ores, operators of mining equipment in a pressurized cab are protected from inhaling radioactive aerosols by the use of filtered air through a pre-impactor and a HEPA (high efficiency particulate air) filter. At present, a limited amount of scientific information is available on the worker exposure to airborne alpha emitters in the mining of high-grade ores. (Miller, 1977, Nielson, et al, 1979). Factors affecting the worker exposure to alpha radiation are: the grade of uranium containing ores, the environmental conditions inside the mine pit, the protection factor of the cab filter system, the workers' attitude towards the hazards of radioactivity and the adopted contamination control in the cabs. Four series of field samplings were conducted during the fall of 1980 and the summer of 1981 at a mining site in northern Saskatchewan to investigate the extent of protection an equipment operator has against cab internal exposure to airborne alpha emitters with short and long half-life radionuclides. The variation in the breathing zone concentrationnof aerosols as a result of resuspension is discussed, however no attempt was made to isolate and investigate the factors and the associated parameters of the aerosol resuspension phenomenon. AEROSOL RESUSPENSION IN A CAB Mechanisms of Resuspension [Sources]: The presence of radioactive aerosols inside a cab and in the breathing zone of an operator may be due to initial concentration inside [(CO)], concentration in the filtered (HEPA) air (CC, at the flow rate [QC]), the concentration of the aerosol through resuspension ([CR]), the aerosol concentration in the air outside the cab ([CE]) and the concentration of the aerosol in the leaking air [(CL)], at the flow rate of [(QL)]. [Volumetric Equilibrium]: Assuming a uniform concentration of the aerosol in the cab, the aerosol concentration in the breathing zone[ (CBZ)] may be expressed as, [CBZ+CO+CC+CR-CL] If [QC] remains greater than [QL], there is pressurization in the cab. There is particle loss as a result of the leaking air from the tight cab, however the condition of adequate pressurization ensures that [CL ~ CC]. Also for dust particles filtered through HEPA [CC – 0] thus [CBZ + CO + CR] For the radioactive gases, [CBZ - CO + CC] Over long periods,[ CBZ – CE] but if [CBZ] exceeds the value of CE then the aerosol build-up in the cab has, occurred. [Resuspension]: Turbulent bursts are generated within the core region of a cab confinement, such that the down sweeps and the up sweeps of the air bursts cause resuspension of dust from the surfaces. Particles initiate resuspension by four major modes: namely, sliding, rocking, rolling, bouncing or sudden ejection or by combinations of these. Nevertheless the adhesion force between the particles and the surface must be overcome by ejection forces before ejection takes place (Kline et al, 1967, Corino and Bradkey 1969, Kim et al 1971). The phenomenon of particle resuspension from a surface may be expressed in a generalized form as: CR =f (Uz . R . D . H) where CR = Rate of particle resuspension UZ = Surface shear velocity R = Surface roughness parameter D = Aerodynamic diameter of particle H = Frequency of surface airburst A detailed discussion of the individual parameters was attempted for the case of farm tractor cabs by Atiemo (1981), such a treatment is out of the scope of this study. Only the effects of the properties of surface roughness will be discussed. Effect of Surface Properties The roughness of the surface from which dust particles are ejected plays a significant role in the deposition and resuspension of the dust. The roughness or the amount of protrusions greatly influence the intensity of air turbulence in the immediate vicinity of the surface (Schmel 1976). For most roughened surfaces therefore, larger particles may be dislodged in greater quantities than smaller particles. The deposition and the resuspension of dust particles from different surface materials of glass, cloth, metal and rubber have been studied in a wind tunnel (Atiemo, 1981). This paper presents the main environmental assessment techniques and indicators that can be used a) for the establishment of a sustainable development framework and b) for the evaluation of the environmental performance within the mining sector. Reference is made to techniques as environmental risk and impact assessment, life cycle assessment, cost benefit analysis and best practical environmental option assessment that can be used as tools to assess environmental impacts of processes, activities and products in the mining sector. In addition, the issue of environmental indicators, covering operational, management and environmental areas, that provide valuable information regarding both the environmental performance of a mining company and its efforts to influence this performance towards sustainability is discussed.

This paper describes the Boroo Gold Company (BGC) ore processing plant which is the first CIL/CIP plant in Mongolia. BGC is the first foreign investment in Mongolia since 1990 and follows the highest safety and environmental standards. Commissioning of the plant commenced in October 2003 and commercial production began in March 2004. Gold recovery is by gravity and conventional leaching and carbon adsorption. Detoxification of the leach tails is by the SO2/Air method before discharging the tails to the tailings pond. Ore types treated at Boroo are predominantly oxide with some transition ore as mining reaches the lower sulphide zone. There are several interesting technological issues and projects ongoing at Boroo which will also be discussed.

The appearance of very large shielded softground TBM's, of 14 m (46 ft) O.D. and more, as needed for two-lane highway tunnels, calls for a thorough search of overall stability and new solutions for front support during maintenance operations in the cutting chamber. The paper deals with the development of a shield for the planned 4 th tunnel crossing under the river Elbe in Hamburg. Specific problems arise from the high water head, the shallow overburden of loose soil and the stone-bearing mixed ground. The choice of the tunneling method and the different features provided to overcome the problems are discussed.

Today's mine development requires the safe, expedient and economical construction of vertical shafts for both ventilation and access. This construction must be accomplished within diverse ground conditions. Advancements in large-diameter shaft drilling have led to many exceptional mechanical refinements in shaft-drilling technology. The paper makes a systematic analysis of interaction between backfill and pillar in coal mining. It compares the difference of pillar strength with backfill and without backfill. It is proved that there are the obvious improvements in pillar strength and the decrease in subsidence. It discusses the subsidence effects of different extraction ratio, different backfill ratio, and different elastic modulus ratio in details. The paper analyses the sensitivity by orthogonal test method. At last, author proposes some suggestion to increase pillar strength, to reduce subsidence, and to guide engineering practices.

The prevention of frictional ignition with a ripper-type continuous mining machine using conical bits was investigated in the laboratory using cutter-drum-mounted water sprays. Results indicated that frictional ignition during dry cutting of sandstone with conical bits was readily obtained even at low drum rpm, while wet cutting with a carefully-designed water spray nozzle located behind the bit substantially reduced the likelihood of frictional ignition. However, the orientation and operation of the spray nozzle is critical and involves almost no margin for error. A Lee-Norse 265 ripper drum has been modified to include durable water seals and is presently being field tested underground.

Ground Freezing was used for excavation support and groundwater control of a 12.8m (42-foot) diameter, 61m (200-foot) deep drop shaft for the South Bay Ocean Outfall Tunnel in San Diego, California. Approximately half way through the excavation, excessive groundwater inflows from the base of the shaft resulted in suspension of excavation and evaluation of the frozen earth wall. This paper discusses the forensic methods used to identify the zone where groundwater intrusion occurred and the methods associated with evaluating zones of high groundwater velocity. The use of remedial grouting and localized liquid nitrogen injection are discussed and evaluated. Concepts of frozen shaft design are discussed, including a new method for permitting the launch of the Tunnel Boring Machine through the frozen earth wall and associated freeze pipes.

Open pit limit analysis techniques of various types have been utilized for many years to design ultimate pit surfaces. In the last 15 years there have been many advances in the development of sophisticated computer methods to aid this process. The extensive capability of the computer has led to multiple alternative approaches to problem solving. Computerized open pit limit analysis methods can be applied to a broad scope of long-range and intermediate-range mine planning and design questions. A single computer run develops a pit design from a set of data. A set of nonsequential runs is used to evaluate changes in pit slopes, property restraints, and mineral model variables. Ore reserve economic sensitivity and intermediate-range mining plans can be developed using sequential computer runs. Present value methods are incorporated by using iterative sequential techniques. Multiple ore processes, dump leaching credits, and the trade-off between open pit and underground mining can also be handled. Many of the applications described are representative of current practice. The remainder are suggested extensions.

This paper provides a new approach to deal with control of ore-rock excavation by means of the optimal control theory-an important branch in cybernetics. In the optimal control theory, the elementary functions are state-transition function and objective function. According to the characteristics of mining planning and production, a set of formulation are established to cope with ore- rock excavation. The formulations include basic formula, anti-disturbance formula as well as other special formula. The new approach has been successfully used in several mines of China.

The large population base, complex geology of the large land mass, and notable commercial activity have accelerated the development of underground construction market in China. The projected lengths of underground openings per year in the various sectors are: hydro-tunnels, 180 km; coal mine entries, 40 km; transport-tunnels, 300+ km. An example of the mega projects (being planned by the Government) is the water supply scheme for connecting Yangtze river to Yellow river involving 131 km of water tunnels with a diameter of 8-10m. Several large projects are highlighted in the paper with reference to the schemes for generating hydro-power, mining of coal and minerals, and constructing transportation networks. The related problems of construction and geomechanics are outlined.

While the process of magnetic separation is understood, the principles affecting the separation, the specific application and the optimization of RERs and REDs are less well known. "Environmental audit" is a phrase that can raise the blood pressure of otherwise cool and calm corporate personnel. There is widespread concern that any organized effort to find environmental problems will do so and may result in the imposition of substantial liability against the business that engages in such activities. The P/B collision and attachment interactions in fine particle flotation have been quantitatively analyzed. New models for attachment probability and kinetics of ‘true flotation’ have been developed. The results are given for both a single bubble and a bubble swarm. The mechanism of the attachment event is also examined. It is shown that (i) impact collision mechanism and rolling mechanism can be ignored in actual fine particle flotation and sliding mechanism is of importance for attachment of particle onto the bubble surface (ii) the attachment probability of fine particles is independent of bubble size and determined by the kinetic measure induction time of hydrophobicity. The theoretical predictions are also compared with the experimental data.

A fundamental study of the mechanisms involved in the conditioning of coarse Florida phosphate has led to some interesting discoveries. Studies by the US Bureau of Mines have shown that conditioning time and mixing intensity greatly affect the grades and recoveries of the phosphate minerals and quartz in the rougher concentrate. In particular, as the conditioning time or mixing intensity increased, the phosphate recovery remained constant while the amount of quartz floated decreased. This phenomenon is contrary to conventional wisdom and could lead to a more efficient coarse flotation circuit.

Hecla Mining Company and Master Builders Inc. conducted a study to evaluate the use of admixtures in reducing backfill binder concentrations. Additionally, admixtures were evaluated to help mitigate the occurrence of cold joints in the fill. Initial results demonstrated a 20% reduction of cement was possible while maintaining critical strength and flowability criteria. Admixtures also helped to control the formation of cold joints in backfilled areas.

In many mining operations, particularly northern open-pit mines, large seasonal variations in grinding slurry temperature can occur. It is shown in this paper that this temperature shift can cause a winter-time loss in autogenous grinding efficiency of as much as 20% if it is not controlled. Laboratory experimentation indicates that much of this effect is due to increases in slurry viscosity as the temperature is decreased. An additional effect may result from changes in rock strength upon freezing, for which possible mechanisms are discussed. However, no effect clearly resulting from rock strength changes has been definitely confirmed.
