The mining industry’s commitment to innovation reflects a history of adopting technological advancements to enhance workplace safety, environmental sustainability and vocational training. The objective of this research was to develop an augmented- reality (AR) system for heavy-equipment operators (HEOs) in surface mining. The developed system has the potential to enhance mine safety, training and data-driven decision- making, which presents a significant step toward a more sustainable, effective and technologically driven mining training, contributing to the industry’s evolution and growth. The AR training system leverages Microsoft’s Power Platform and HoloLens 2 capacities to provide operators with detailed and immersive training guides for three mining equipment, including bulldozers, motor graders and haul trucks. AR guides combine speech controls, 3D objects, informative images and explicative videos in the real working conditions to enhance the operator’s learning process. The system has the potential to modify the training structure based on user performance and provides an efficient approach to data collection during training. This project was developed and applied through a case study in a surface mine in the Southern United States.

The following is a summary of the Robert E. Murray Innovation Lecture on “Sustainable Copper Mining Flowsheets and the MissionZero Mine” presented as part of the keynote session on Feb. 23, 2026 during the MINEXCHANGE 2026 SME Annual Conference & Expo in Salt Lake City, UT. As the world accelerates its transition to renewable energy, the appetite for critical minerals such as copper, lithium, nickel, rare earths and graphite has never been greater. Forecasts suggest that global mineral demand will double by 2050, driven by the proliferation of electric vehicles, renewable power infrastructure and digital technologies. This surge presents not only an immense opportunity but also an unprecedented challenge. In a world where every ton of ore processed and every liter of water used is scrutinized, how can mining deliver more with less, while meeting tightening environmental and social expectations? Traditional mining methods, developed for an era of abundant, high-grade ore and looser regulations, are struggling to meet today’s demands. Declining ore grades, volatile markets and the imperative to shrink environmental footprints have rendered traditional mineral processing practices unsustainable. The sector thus finds itself at a decisive juncture, caught between the need to fuel the green economy, defense and artificial intelligence (AI) infrastructure, without compromising the planet’s future. Balancing these competing demands requires a paradigm shift in technologies and processes. FLS has responded to this challenge with MissionZero: an ambitious, holistic initiative to develop flowsheets for the future of mineral processing. This systemic approach aligns operational excellence with environmental responsibility. Integrating innovative technologies, digital intelligence and commodityspecific process designs, it offers mining professionals a roadmap to meet both production targets and sustainability goals. At the center of this approach is the belief that a more sustainable mining requires more than incremental improvement; it demands a fundamental shift in how we extract, process and manage resources. By developing tailored flowsheets for copper, gold, lithium and tailings reprocessing, FLS aims to set a new standard for efficiency, circularity and environmental stewardship. The message is clear. We must achieve more with less: less energy, less water, less waste.

INTRODUCTION The mining, extraction and refining of metals into useful materials is an honorable profession with an ancient and productive history. Civilizations have long depended upon metals for their implements, structures and machinery necessary for survival, growth, and development. Today, as in the future, metals and minerals are essential to the progress of mankind as we approach the 21st century with technologies and concepts that will require new concepts and production from the metal mining and processing industries. Today is the tomorrow we talked about yesterday and the implementation of new ideas is essential if we are to achieve "Frontier Technology in Mineral Processing". Unfortunately, the state-of-the-art mining, processing, smelting and refining methods historically employed were less than desirable environmentally, which has caused todays public to view the metal mining and processing industry with concern. Presently the ancient rock and chat tips connected with old Roman lead-zinc mines which were worked in Wales are causing stream contamination problems that must be corrected at considerable expense to the local governmental agencies (Firth, J.N.M., et al., 1981). However, improved progress has been made and the environmental control and clean-up procedures utilized by modern lead-zinc operations in the "Viburnum Trend" or "New Lead Belt" of South East Missouri may serve as a model to illustrate how alternative technologies, environmental concerns and cooperative efforts contribute to efficient mineral production within the confines of a U.S. National Forest region without significant environmental impacts. This area received international attention when it was opened within the boundaries of the Clark National Forest in the mid 1960's. By 1970 it ranked first in the world by producing 432,576 short tons of lead ore and has since continued in this position producing 451,153 short tons of lead ore in 1983 representing 91% of the total United States lead production (U.S. Bureau of idines, 1983). This production comes from a mining area approximately 40 miles long by 10 miles wide extending in a north-south direction. Geologically the lead is disseminated throughout the Cambrain age Bonneterre Formation, mostly a dolomite, at depths ranging from 700 to 1200 ft. (213.4 to 365.8 m). Galena (lead) is the principal ore mined with lesser quantities of sphalerite (zinc), chaleopyrite (copper) and silver being recovered as economic co-products. This new mining development in one of Missouri is most scenic areas could have led to a classic confrontation between industries and environmentalists. Instead, through the cooperation of industries, governmental agencies and university researchers, the Ozark environment has been protected, and may serve as a model for future coexistence of the mineral industry with the environment. Cooperative Program Development As early as 1965 five new mines and two lead smelters were being prepared for production and environmental concern was an essential part of that planning. All the mining companies became acquainted with representatives of the various federal and state agencies and scientists from the University of Missouri-Rolla (UMR). During the next six years, St. Joe Minerals Corporation, American Metal Climax, Inc., Cominco American Incorporated, Ozark Lead Company (Kennecott) and American Smelting and Refining Company participated in cooperative research efforts. The companies also participated in information exchange meetings, the development of improved analytical methods and the utilization of research findings in the modification or construction of pollution-abatement facilities. Early on research was carried out to determine background values and to establish natural baselines of trace metals in the surrounding environment. The unusual topography and drainage pattern of the mining area were helpful since it was possible to establish control sites and test sites below individual mine-mill operations to study waste-water effects on the receiving streams. In-mine Continuous Wave (CH) Radio Imaging method (RIM) instrumentation has the capability of measuring EM wave propagation constants in layered formations. The RIM method is based upon the fact that seams of coal, trona, potash, quartzite, gilsonite and oil bearing sands form natural waveguides for low loss transmission of electromagnetic (EM) waves. The waveguide forms whenever the seam is bounded by more conducting claystone, mudstone, shale or in the case of oil/gas traps, by a floor of saline water. Disturbances caused by faults, shear zones, paleochannels, sills and dikes significantly alter the propagation constant. The analytical values of the EM wave propagation constants depend on the physical and electrical parameters of the seam. The values are presented in this paper in a graphical form to assist in the interpretation of RIM tomographic images. This paper compares in-mine geologic mapping obtained during mining to tomographic images of the geologic disturbance zones in a Central Utah coal mine.

As a general rule for gold treatment the presence of reasonable amounts of 'coarse' free gold will dictate the use of a gravity circuit. The actual particle size of gold that constitutes the por­tion of' coarse' free gold can vary widely. The larger its size the more troublesome it is, mainly because of the tendency for this gold to quickly settle out from slurries in regions of relatively low velocities. There are a multitude of places where 'coarse' gold can find a resting place, namely, in chutes, between and behind lines, in pump hoppers and in pumps themselves. Fortunately, the problems associated with recovering very 'coarse' free gold, say greater than Imm, is rare on most gold mines that have grinding and cyanide leaching circuits. For these operations it is common practice to have a gravity circuit situated within the milling circuit to recover 'coarse' free gold. Should the 'coarse' free gold constitute 15% to 20% of the total gold in a deposit then its recovery by gravity separation is seri­ously considered. As a gold mine 'matures' the availability of soft oxide ore decreases and the likelihood that harder ore having sulphide gold association increases. To maintain gold production rates in this situation either the gold grade of the treated ore must increase or more ore needs to be treated. In the latter case this is achieved by installing more grinding capacity, an expensive option, or coarsing the grind, with the downside of loss in gold recovery. In general the less expensive capital options is fol­lowed. There is, however, some upside to improve recovery when reasonable quantities of sulphide containing gold are pre­sented that can be recovered by flotation or gravity separation. Concentrates produced from these unit operations can be finely ground and reintroduced to the cyanide leach circuit to improve gold recovery. This scenario is a much less costly option than one where all the ore is ground finer. In this paper the experiences of recovering gravity gold from the Telfer Gold Mine, and gold associated pyrite from the New Celebration Mine will be discussed.

Ore reserves are often less than 30% of geologic resource estimates that are initially prepared by exploration geologists. Differences of this magnitude between resources and reserves can lead to serious . problems in the early valuation of properties when the geologic resource estimates are interpreted to represent ore reserves and are later found to be misleading and gross overstatements of ore reserves. The geologist can avoid such difficulties by considering the implications of mining, metallurgical recovery, and economics early in the project and by using appropriate qualifiers in the resource statement Examples using typical deposit characteristics are used to demonstrate how cutoff grade, stripping ratio, dilution, mining extraction and metallurgical recovery affect ore reserve estimations.

Formally, a mathematical model could be defined as: A set of equations whose solution will approximate the response of a physical process or system to a set of stimuli which appear as parameters in the equations. The purpose of a mathematical model is to permit the rationalization of experience to proceed by simulation rather than by physical experimentation. In the application of digital computer control to an industrial process, the mathematical model of the process (subsequently called the process model) is needed to calculate the present process performance from the measured variables and to predict the response of the process to a control change. Functionally, the cardinal element in process model development is a concise set of control objectives. These, besides implicitly defining the boundaries of the system to be modeled, will determine the accuracy demanded of the model its nature: dynamic or steady-state, and so forth, The objectives should explicitly define what process efficiencies, production rates, qualities are to lie within the scope of the computer control project, thereby providing a basis for simplifying assumptions in the development of the model. This requirement, a limited set of control objectives, is so often disregarded in formulating industrial control problems that its repetition can scarcely be avoided.

Because of the nature of the breakage in the Barmac vertical spindle impactor, the 80% reduction ratio is very small, so that when the energy efficiency is calculated by Bond's method, it appears to be very low. However, the product size distribution contains a high proportion of fines. It is argued that the production of these fines accounts for the high energy consumption, and Bond's method is modified to account for this, by considering the crusher to be, effectively, a number of smaller crushers in parallel, each having a different reduction ratio.

The Bureau of Mines has developed an equation which describes the dewatering of clay slurries with polyethylene oxide. This dewatering equation is An _ kC + b where n, k. and b are empirical constants and C is the concentration of polymer solution used for dewatering. The minimum amount of polymer required for dewatering. A is determined by titration of the clay slurry with a polymer solution. In this report, the dewatering equation is applied to data obtained for a polyacrylamide dewatering sequence. Fundamental similarities between the dewatering properties of clays and the viscosity of polymer solutions were observed. These similarities were explained by correlating an equation describing polymer configuration in solution with the dewatering equation. This correlation showed that amount of polymer required for dewatering and polymer solution viscosity are both consequences of the frictional interaction of entangled polymer coils.

Offshore oil and gas production operations have moved from water depths of about 50 feet in 1948 to the present record depth of 340 feet. Although mobile drilling rigs are widely used for exploratory drilling, most development drilling and production operations have been conducted above water from the decks of fixed, bottom-founded platforms. Increasing water depths have caused problems associated with design and construction of these platforms and with laying of pipelines, but not so much with other activities. After a platform is installed, drilling, production, and maintenance operations are similar to those onshore and are relatively unaffected by water depth. Events of 1968 indicate that offshore production may soon extend into much deeper water. These events include leasing of Santa Barbara Channel acreage in water depths over 1500 feet, and the successful drilling of a wildcat well in 1300 feet. Designs have been developed for platforms suitable for installation in water over 600 feet deep, and studies suggest they may be used in some areas to water depths of 800 to 1000 feet. Buoyant towers can probably support above-surface platforms in water 1000 feet and deeper. Although the cost of either of these platforms will be high, once installed they will permit relatively low-cost development drilling and production operations compared with estimates for subsea production systems. In some cases, savings in development drilling costs alone could pay out the platform investment.

This paper describes the geology and geotechnics associated with construction of the Thames Tunnel, part of the UK’s Channel Tunnel Rail Link (CTRL). The 2.5km long twin tunnels run beneath the river Thames at depths of up to 40m and are currently under construction. They pass through varying geology comprising alluvium, terrace gravels and chalk with flints and are currently being bored using Herrenknecht mixshield slurry tunnel boring machines (TBM’s). This paper outlines the lithology and engineering properties of each geological formation and describes the geotechnical processes, potential hazards and difficulties experienced in the works. A summary is given into the extent of the investigative work in terms of route selection, tunnel design, TBM optimisation and further details are provided on the geotechnical aspects associated with the construction of the tunnel approach structures and the tunnels.

Studies in eastern Ohio, northern West Virginia, and southwestern Pennsylvania determined whether subsidence caused by longwall mining influences soil moisture and tree growth. Soil moisture was measured both over new longwall panels and over an unmined control area throughout the growing seasons of 1990, a wet year when the panels were excavated, and 1991, a dry year. No significant effects of mining could be detected. Tree growth was studied in two pairs of woodlots. In each pair, one woodlot was located over a longwall panel excavated about 1980 and the other over an unmined area. Differences in tree growth between mined and unmined areas were neither significant (for most species) nor consistent in direction. The above results imply that if mining does have impacts they are likely to be highly site-specific and localized such as by disruptions of springs or soil slippage.

The influence of mining on the hydro-geo-mechanical environment can be greatly modified by alternating mining geometries. The limiting magnitudes of surface subsidence and groundwater flow over the mining area, as a result of mine geometric changes, can be reasonably predicted through the coupled finite-element model introduced in this paper. The model has been verified using real and conceptual case studies which reveal that changes in strata conductivities are strongly related to the strata deformation induced by mining. The greatest modification of hydraulic conductivities occurs within the caving or severely fractured zones. The study indicates that narrowing the panel face width will substantially reduce both the intensity and extent of mining damage to the overlying strata, limit surface subsidence and constrain the change in hydraulic conductivity to a reduced scale and smaller extent, particularly as mining depth increases.

Under conditions of high methane content in the seams and the descending of exploitation to greater depths, methane hazard control is becoming more and more difficult. This is due both to the amount of methane released and to the technical possibilities of diluting and capturing it. The removal of excess methane from mine workings only by means of the ventilating current has become a problem. Therefore many countries designate large sums of money for research work in the field of controlling dangerous methane accumulations and for introducing this control into mining practice. In Poland the Central Mining Institute is leading in this field. Its Safety-in-Mines Institute, Barbara Experimental Mine in cooperation with collieries has recently carried out interesting investigations on the distribution of methane concentrations in gobs behind the front of longwalls mined with caving.

The search for a more effective means of coping with methane liberation has resulted in the expanded use of seam degasification. Its advantages are measured not only in reducing the hazards due to methane, but also in producing a marketable commodity, the gas itself. However, the success of a methane drainage system is the culmination of many complex factors, the most important being the coal seam permeability. The two most popular drainage techniques used in mining today are the vertically stimulated borehole method and the in-seam horizontal borehole method. The objective of this paper is to determine the permeability range in which the selection of the degasification technique is based primarily on equipment and economic analysis. A discussion of the equipment involved will be incorporated into examples evaluated by the Pennsylvania State University coal methane simulation model.

This paper reviews the fundamental concepts involved in the development, application and validation of ground movement predic¬tion methods developed by Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University (VPI&SU) over the past 12 years. Prediction techniques have included empirical or semi-empirical methods, such as the profile function, influence function and zone area methods, as well as numerical methods, based on a finite element formulation which utilizes field subsidence data. The former techniques have been integrated in the Surface Deformation Prediction System (SDPS) software package for personal computers, which allows for the calculation of any component of ground movement in any direction. Comparisons between measured and predicted subsidence and strain values are presented for a selection of case studies, which demonstrate the applicability, accuracy and regional validity of these methods for predicting surface deformations due to underground mining.

As the importance of particle shape in mineral processing is increasingly recognized as an major variable in predicting the behavior of both individual particles and particle systems, whether it be in dense media, froth flotation, comminution or the flow of particles, new method of shape characterization are being developed, particularly for use on image analyzers. These shape characterization methods may be broadly classified into the analytical, empirical and physical formation methods. Discussed are approaches and the strengths and weakness of each of these methods. Moreover old and new shape measuring techniques are reviewed, particularly the new image analysis methods techniques such as Fourier, Haar, Fractal, Walsh and Delta as well as a variety of other techniques such as tabling, the Cascadograph, settling and L/D ratios. Also discussed are the problems of doing shape research, current progress and the future of the field.

With the increase of new mine development in the past several years, many coal mines have decided to self- perform the design and construction for their slope development projects. The development process of determining the proper configuration is challenging, and a major economical consideration. Greenbrier Smokeless Minerals engineering staff and consultants, along with DSI/American Commercial, developed a support configuration that was best suited for their slope. The developmental process took into consideration the length of slope, depth of slope at the high-wall transition, economics of a single or multiple entries, waterproofing, stresses on the steel supports and lagging during the backfilling operation. This paper describes the developmental concept of using a single entry, side by side configuration, using steel ?Banjo String? supports with steel plank lagging, to develop a long term permanent installation in a cut and cover application.
