Reconciliation of long-term, block-model reserves and mine production frequently shows significant discrepancies. This reconciliation can be done comparing the long-term, block-model reserves against a grade control model (a model based on blast holes or production data). In this article, this is called an Fl factor for tonnages, grade and ounces. This reconciliation should also be done by comparing the grade control model to the mill feed (or loaded to heaps) tonnages, grades and ounces (F2 factor). The long-term model usually contains blocks with dimensions larger than the size of the selective mining unit (SMU) of the operation. The smoothing effect of an estimator, such as kriging, will generally result in a grade-tonnage curve that does not match the grade-tonnage curve of the SMUs to be recovered. This problem is partly to blame for the reconciliation discrepancies found. In addition, in-pit perfect selection is impossible. Therefore, the grade-tonnage predictions based on blastholes also need to be assessed - considering unplanned dilution and the errors of estimation of the grade control model. This article focuses on using conditional simulations to assess the uncertainty of the predicted grade-tonnage curve in terms of minable reserves and in the framework of long-term mine planning. Quantifying the uncertainty in no uncertain terms is done in conjunction with a popular pit optimizer. It yields several possible minable reserves and several possible minable tonnages and grades, per pit shell or scheduled phase. This is a step further from the usual sensitivity analyses that are performed for deposit evaluation or development planning. Specifically, this approach takes into account the volume-variance relationship, the selectivity of the mining operation and the planned and unplanned dilution. It also carries the local uncertainty implicit in grade estimation into the mine design and mine planning phases. The estimation of recoverable reserves revolves around estimating the block distribution of metal grades from the drill hole information available, typically composites of a fixed length. Ideally, this estimation should accurately predict the ore sent to the processing facilities of an operation. Here are some definitions used in this article: ? Recoverable reserves are those where an attempt has been made to estimate the actual distribution of grades (usually by a block model) that would be found in the ground at the time of mining, relative to the mine equipment size and other operational characteristics of the mine SMU. In particular, it incorporates the effect of internal dilution for each block how the grade distribution changes in variability when comparing a composite grade distribution to the "mining unit" grade distribution. In geostatistical jargon, this is known as "change of support effect," or volume-variance effect. ? Minable reserves are those recoverable reserves defined by a mine plan. In an open-pit scenario, they would incorporate pit optimization in addition to the sequencing and scheduling of production through mine life. ? All other block model estimates from drill hole data that do not explicitly attempt to estimate or measure the volume-variance effect are called in situ. It can be argued that these models may be inappropriate tools for predicting the grade-tonnage curve of the material to be sent for processing (minable reserves). The purpose of estimating recoverable reserves can be thought of as estimating the appropriate amount of dilution that should be incorporated into the model so that it adequately predicts (long-term and on average) the grade-tonnage curve of the ore sent to the processing facilities (mean grades and ton-

With high expectations and promises, computers were introduced to the mining industry in the late 1950s and 1960s. Applications spread in the 1970s when capabilities began to catch up to early promises, and people within the industry began to see the benefits of using computers in business and engineering. The 1980s have seen a wide acceptance of computers, both large and small, and the use of computers is accelerating throughout the industry. Computers have changed dramatically over the last 25 years. The power of some microcomputers matches the capabilities of main frame computers from less than 10 years ago. The variety of software on these micros exceeds what is available on many larger computers today. Changes over the next 10 years are likely to be greater than those of the last 10 years. Making use of available computer technology while trying to cope with the rapid changes in this industry will take much effort within mining. To take advantage of existing computers, consider and evaluate: project needs and applications; professional, administrative, and support personnel; computer software and technology; and computer and related hardware. Note that this list is in the order of decreasing importance. These categories are also presented in the order for which organization and solutions should be provided to get the most out of computers. To start with a computer and go up the list has cost many mining companies needless expenditures, wear and tear on personnel, and frustration. It is assumed for this article that the need for computer tools is self evident. You can do without a computer by using the appropriate techniques (manual methods) with any required shortcuts plus a lot of personnel time. Indeed, several companies are doing that as a "solution" to what to do with their excess engineering personnel in these lean times. However, the future may be better served if some of these people could be prepared to handle the applications and technology presently available. People and Problems To present the factors related to turning the computer into a productivity aide, it may be enlightening to examine some common people problems that reduce productivity. The most valuable resource any mining company has is its mining professionals. And, particularly with computers, people either make the successes or create the barriers, not the machines. The following list of people problems (syndromes and complexes) has been amply observed during some 23 years of the author's experience with computers and their applications in mining. Home Grown Syndrome - "Nobody else can really understand my problem or provide `exactly' what I need to solve it." While there may be some truth to this syndrome, it would be an unusual project that cannot be handled with existing solutions for at least 75-80% of the needs. Having a base to build on will also speed the development of any remaining needs. It does not seem justified to start all over for a new application, even if "our problem is unique." The Coteau Properties Company's Freedom Mine is a surface lignite mining operation located near Beulah, North Dakota. As part of the mining process, Coteau removes and replaces thin layers of suitable plant growth material (SPGM) generally ranging in thickness between one and five feet. Historically, tractor-scrapers completed this work; however, rising tractor-scraper costs and increasing haulage distances sent Coteau in search of a lower cost method resulting in the acquisition of a backhoe/truck fleet in 1995.

Recently, a new theory of the subsidence of rock masses has been advanced by Litwiniszyn and coworkers, which is based on the notion that the individual rock particles perform random walks. It is shown in the present paper that the final equations of the random walk theory can be justified from general principles of statistical mechanics in which no specific theoretical model of particle behavior has to be made. The theory appears to account appropriately for subsidence phenomena.

The Bureau of Mines, U.S. Department of the Interior, has investigated the use of rheology to provide insight into the mechanism of flocculation. A technique developed by Tattersall has been modified and used to explain the flocculation of calcium montmorillonite with polyethylene oxide. The results indicated that there are two types of bond systems operating during the flocculation sequence. Also, flocculation results are highly dependent on the shear rate and the amount of polymer added.

American Aggregates Corporation is one of the leading producers of mineral aggregates in the nation. Production is from deposits of glacial sand and gravel and limestone and dolomite bedrock. Annual production from 33 plants is 25,000,000 tons. Land consumption is at the rate of 300 to 400 acres annually. This annual rate of consumption presents a continuing challenge to the exploration and mining personnel to meet the requirements of reserve replacement, mining and land rehabilitation.

The electrochemical nature of mineral-grinding media interaction in the wet grinding of one and two sulfide mineral ores was investigated with regard to the flotation behaviors of the minerals. Two iron sulfides (pyrite and pyrrhotite) and mild steel were used to represent the sulfide minerals and the grinding media, respectively. Galvanic currents in two-and three-electrode combinations under abrasive and non-abrasive conditions were correlated with the floatabilities of these minerals under corresponding conditions.

This paper describes the research, development, procurement, engineering and construction of the Asamera Minerals cannon Mine concentrator. This fast track project was accomplished in 20 months. Special attention is paid to the risks encountered and the steps taken to ameliorate them.

The dimensions and shape of both airborne and bulk amphibole-asbestos fibers are different from those of cleavage fragments of the amphiboles. These differences are related to the mineralogical properties unique to the habit of asbestos. These properties include the fibrillar structure, small fibrill widths and distinctive crystallographic faces of fibrills. Criteria for distinguishing amphibole cleavage fragments from amphibole-asbestos include mineralogical proper-ties observable in bulk samples and the dimensions of particles collected on air filters.

The Bureau of Mines conducted research to determine the effect of fine bubbles on the flotation of fine-sized particles (minus 20-um size). Turbulent flow collision models for fine particles and fine bubbles were reviewed. Velocity distributions within the flotation cell along with measured bubble and particle size distributions were considered in the models to predict the flotation response. The models were corroborated with laboratory fine-bubble flotation tests to verify the expected increase in flotation efficiency.

The Montana Talc ore body was discovered in the summer of 1983, in the Gravelly Range, approximately 25 miles south of Ennis, Montana. Initial drilling indicated a plus-million-ton ore body of high-purity talc. Preliminary analyses were performed on the ore cuttings, .including chemical analysis, brightness measurements, and microscopic evaluations of the structure of the talc. The results indicated the talc was similar to that currently being marketed from Montana and probably would have good commercial value.

Charles Morris Minerals engineers have a new opportunity to shape their industry's future. They can help secondary school teachers in their own communities improve their scientific knowledge and thus be better prepared to teach their students. Local sections of AIME and other groups are being asked to sponsor expense-aid scholarships for teachers who complete the summer field course A Total Concept of the Mining Industry. Now in its 18th year, the six-week summer course is presented by the Colorado Mining Association Education Foundation Inc., in cooperation with the Colorado School of Mines Office of Special Programs Continuing Education. The course will be held June 9 through July 18. "In the past, we have been successful in soliciting support for teacher-scholars from many organizations, corporations, and individuals within the industry," said John Robertson, Jr., Foundation chairman. "Now we hope to enlist the help of engineers at the grass roots level in identifying qualified local teachers and giving them what it takes to participate in this continuing education program." Robertson said the course provides secondary school teachers, counselors, and administrators with a working knowledge of the mining and metallurgical industries. It also helps teachers recognize career opportunities for their students. "With the industry facing a challenging new era, we must have teachers who can relate the excitement of this challenge to their students. They will inspire future generations of resource finders, developers, and managers," he said. More than 670 teachers in 27 states, including 45 graduates of the "class of '85" have completed the course and gained six semester hours of graduate credit. The Foundation's Planning and Curriculum Committee meets regularly to develop the course outline and recruit the faculty. Lecturers are selected on their ability to communicate with people not familiar with the industry. Last year, 67 faculty members came at their own time and expense to discuss their specialties, ranging from exploration to marketing. Normally, teachers receive scholarship aid in the form of tuition and fees, and transportation and meals while on field trips. Expense-aid scholarships cover room and board on campus for those beyond the Denver-Metro area, and travel to and from Golden. "We hope to broaden the appeal and the geographical range of the program," Robertson said. Inspiration for the field summer program for teachers came in 1967 from a mining engineer, the late C.L. (Lindy) Barker, a 1931 graduate of the Colorado School of Mines. Barker and a group of concerned individuals convinced the Colorado Mining Association to accept sponsorship of the course in 1968. The Colorado School of Mines and its Office of Special Programs and Continuing Education agreed to be a co-sponsor to give it accreditation and provide physical facilities and coordination. The first course was held in 1969. Operating funds were solicited from industry to pay tuition, course material, the cost of a course coordinator, field trips, and overhead. Through the years, personal contact by an industry representative has been the most effective teacher recruiting tool. Through expense-aid scholarships provided by local sections of professional organizations, such as AIME, as well as CSM alumni and other friends, there will now be a greater incentive for more teachers to get to know the minerals industry and pass that knowledge on in the classroom.

Bechtel Civil and Minerals, Inc., one of the Bechtel group of companies, is a large engineering and construction firm that services the mining industry, among others. The firm's head, S. D. Bechtel Jr., comments on how his E&C company is dealing with the recessionary economy. First, he offered a historical perspective. About a half century ago-in the middle of the Great Depression-W. A. Bechtel and several business partners drew up a fixed price bid to build the Hoover Dam. At that moment in history, the W. A. Bechtel Co. was a modest success, but the times were troubled and uncertain. Money was scarce and a lot of contractors across the country were one project ahead of bankruptcy. The bid for Hoover was a make-or-break proposition for Bechtel, and it turned out successfully. The Hoover Dam was a no-frills operation in an isolated and harsh environment. There was plenty of hard work, long hours, and not many amenities. Controlling costs was critical. Everyone knew what had to be done, and why and what the consequences were. Today's Challenge Bechtel is now a bigger, more complex organization whose management views the current economic recession as a challenge to be met in much the same way W. A. Bechtel met the challenge of the Hoover Dam: by pulling together with a sense of purpose and direction. In many respects, Bechtel's situation today has a number of parallels to that which faced my grandfather. The company is eminently successful, but times are tough and there are plenty of signs that they could get tougher. My grandfather bet on the Hoover Dam to insure the future health of his company and I think we can work together again in that same tradition, make some tough decisions together, and the company's future can be just as promising. The first and most important requirement is to make certain that everyone understands the situation. The Bechtel group of companies are in an excellent financial position now. Its workload hit an alltime high in 1982 and it is well positioned in its principal markets. But the next two years may be critical for the company. Traditionally, Bechtel's work load lags behind general developments in the economy. Although many of its clients continue to suffer serious business difficulties, Bechtel is only beginning to feel the impact. The worldwide market for basic metals remains soft; relatively low prices and abundant supplies of oil and gas have flattened the petroleum market and made once promising synfuels projects economically unattractive; utility clients are still caught in the vise between overregulation and escalating costs. And persistently high, long-term interest rates have made capital investments expensive and difficult to justify. The company maintained a healthy workload through 1982. In some areas it has had little new work and consequently has been forced to lay off some staff as projects have been canceled or concluded. In other areas new work has tided the company over and more people have been hired. But new work bookings have fallen off, creating some uncertainty for the near future. 1983 requirements are clear, although seemingly contradictory. Belt tightening and cost reduction are necessary for Bechtel to remain healthy and competitive, enabling it to handle a possible further downturn with a minimum of turmoil and dislocation. At the same time, we need to allocate resources and funds in areas that will keep us positioned for the turn-around marketplace.

Semiautogenous milling was the subject of 18 papers presented at the SME Fall Meeting in Albuquerque, NM. The process design and scale-up of SAG mills was discussed in several papers. These included a review of testing methods for the sizing of SAG mills by Barrett and Allan. Austin et al. presented an improved simulation model for SAG mill grinding, with model validity demonstrated against pilot plant SAG mill test results. Rogovin et al. presented some pilot plant results relating to the charge motion, hold-up, and particle size segregation in SAG mills. A number of papers described improvements achieved in operating SAG mill circuits. These included presentations by Dailey concerning mills at the National Steel Pellet Co., by Brown and Pipke concerning the Island Copper grinding circuit, by Lovering of Afton Mines Ltd., and by Bartrum et al. of Kidston Gold Mines Ltd. Bush and Hegerle of Amax also discussed SAG mill operations at the company's Henderson mill. They addressed the topics of SAG mill grinding economics. Other papers addressed the topics of SAG mill control (Vanderbeek et al. and Pennington), grinding media (Meulendyke et al.), liners (Kjos), and fabrication (Carr and Utley). The 1985 AIME Annual Meeting in New York featured four technical sessions concerning size reduction technology and practice. Papers involving fundamentals included one by Hinde describing simulation model usage for quantifying the classification and concentration of heavy minerals in grinding circuits. Another, by Rogers et al., discussed simulation models that were used as a design aid in evaluating screens versus hydrocyclones for fine grinding circuits. Arbiter discussed dimensional considerations in grinding mill design, and Schwechten and Schonert proposed the use of a high pressure roll mill as a means for reducing energy requirements in fine grinding. Internal classification in tumbling mills was the subject of a paper by Hogg and Rogovin. The mechanism of internal classification were identified and their effects illustrated. Simulation for the process design of ball mills was exemplified in a paper by Rogers, Austin, and Brame concerning phosphate grinding in laboratory to large diameter mills. The incorporation of liberation into size reduction models was the subject of papers by Austin et al., Herbst et al., and Choi et al. Gupta used simulations models to further investigate zero order fines production in ball and rod mills. Of the published literature, many articles on size reduction were published in various publications in 1985. Articles concerning ball mill grinding included an analysis of interstitial gas effects in dry grinding by Cottaar et al., an analysis of mill grinding noise by Watson, studies of factors affecting breakage rates in dry milling by Gupta et al., and in wet milling by Tangsathitkuchai and Austin. Austin and Klimpel presented two papers concerning ball wear and ball size distribution effects. Koka et al., and Gotsis et al., described recent developments concerning the Szego mill. A model for hammer milling circuits was described in papers by Gotsis et al. and Gotsis and Austin. Heim et al. reported on wet grinding in Perl mills, and Kuga et al. presented findings concerning pulverizing in a screen mill. Studies of grinding effects on particle surfaces were published by Meloy and Hofmann et al., and Scieszka proposed a technique to investigate pulverizing properties of coals. Austin and Rogers discussed factors of powder technology of significance in industrial size reduction in mills and crushers. (Space limitations preclude listing of references. The features of the teeter bed separator and its application in the coarse slime separation of Chengjiao coal preparation plant were discussed. The relationship between the coarse slime separation efficiency by TBS and the particle size were studied, and the influence of using TBS on dense medium consumption and oil consumption were investigated, it increased the clean coal yield and the comprehensive recovery of the whole plant, and brought huge economic benefits to Chengjiao coal preparation plant.

The dispersion of oily collector has significant effect on the flotation recovery of ultrafine coal. Generally, reagent dispersion is accomplished by mechanical mixing and/or ultrasonic agitation, followed by direct addition of dispersed collector into the flotation cell. However, such dispersion and reagent addition techniques are invariably inadequate and non-selective. A new collector utilization technique involving gas phase transport of atomized collector has shown improved results when compared to conventional reagent addition techniques. This new technique involves atomization of the collector into the gas stream. Under these circumstances an aerosol is introduced into the flotation cell. Initially, the oil is dispersed within the gas phase (continuous with respect to oil) and the gas phase is dispersed within the pulp (continuous with respect to aerosol). In the flotation cell, the atomized oil droplets coalesce on the bubble's surface and create a de-facto oil-encapsulated bubble. This approach provides excellent dispersion, increases selectivity, and most significantly increases the flotation rate of ultrafine coal. Furthermore, atomization of collector/frother combinations yielded improved flotation yields and maintained near uniform froth levels which is a desirable feature in coal flotation. In addition to flotation experiments, microscopic examinations of the attachment of oil-coated bubbles at a coal surface were conducted by attachment-time and contact-angle measurements. The oil coated bubbles attach at significantly faster rates and with a higher contact angle than do oil free bubbles.
