This is the second in a series of articles on microcomputers and applications in the minerals industry. The first article (ME, Feb., page 129) discussed microcomputer terms and concepts. This article will discuss software for geology and mining. The third article will cover plant, administrative, and geotechnical software applications. Introduction Geology and exploration are areas where computers have a natural fit. Large volumes of data need to be tabulated, evaluated, and made into maps and reports that allow geologists and management to make a decision on a project or mine. Until recently, the programs that performed these tasks were cumbersome and not user friendly by any stretch of the imagination. Learning time to become an expert in these programs typically would be six months or more. The computers needed to run these programs are expensive mainframes. Several years ago, the use of minicomputers became popular because of their lower cost. Programs were adapted to fit these smaller machines and became friendlier. With the advent of micros, many programs. were rewritten and used the screen capability more effectively, thus providing a real advance in user interface. Programs and Price The definition of micro, mini, and mainframe is becoming blurred. For the purposes of this article, micro refers to either an eight- or 16-bit computer, costing less than $10,000 and, more typically, under $5,000. Mini refers to a 16- or 32-bit computer that typically costs more than $25,000. Mainframe refers to a 32-bit or larger computer that costs more than $250,000. There is a large gray area between micros and minis, and minis and mainframes. Technology and prices are changing so fast that the traditional definitions have become almost meaningless and price has become a better guide. With the arrival of the minicomputer, costs for hardware began to fall, but the programs have tended to remain unfriendly. In some cases, the minicomputer acted as a front end to the mainframe. Cost of both the programs and minicomputers could easily run a minimum of $70,000. A total cost of $200,000 would not have been out of line. The average geologist and company would have a great deal of difficulty justifying such a purchase. The advent of the microcomputer has changed all that. For $3,500 to $5,000, one can buy a 16-bit micro and a printer. Plotters with six pens are available for $2,000 that will produce a 280- x 430-mm (11- x17-in.) map. For several hundred dollars, software is available to act as a word processor, an economic spread sheet, or to perform ground water calculations. In fact, some programs are available for free. Some of these programs are relatively easy to learn. In addition, programs are being developed daily that are easy to use. Fully mechanized longwall mining with large mining heights (LMHs) in shallow-depth thick coal seams has been widely applied in Shenfu coalfield, China. Dynamic loading and rib spalling is serious when the LMH working face experiences periodic weighting in shallow coal seams. The advanced breaking position (fracturing ahead of the face) in the roof affects the strength of the mine pressure (weighting) when the roof is broken. Based on the theory of the “elastic foundation beam,” this paper presents a mechanical model for the advanced breaking of the roof, including a predictive formula. In an attempt to verify the formula, a field program consisting of multiple-point borehole extensometers installed in the roof in advance of the longwall face was performed in the No. 22201 working face of Zhangjiamao coal mine in the Shenfu mining area, China. The field measurement results show that the roof movement of the LMH working face is detected prior to roof pressure increase, and that the roof breaks approximately 5–8 m ahead of the face. This compares with a calculated value of 6.9 m, indicating that the formula developed in this research is reliable and should have application in predicting roof pressure associated with LMH working faces in shallow coal seams.

A study was conducted to examine the potential of diesel emissions control strategies based on retrofitting existing power packages with exhaust aftertreatment devices and repowering with advanced power packages. The retrofit systems, a diesel oxidation catalyst (DOC) and diesel particulate filter (DPF), were evaluated individually using a US EPA tier 2 (ter 2) engine operated under four steady-state conditions and one transient cycle. The DOC effectively curtailed emissions of CO, and to some extent organic carbon (OC), elemental carbon (EC), and aerosol number concentration. The DPF system offered substantially higher reductions in OC and EC mass and aerosol number concentrations. Both, the DOC and DPF achieved reductions in the aforementioned emissions without adversely affecting emissions of NO2 and nano-sized aerosols. The strategy of repowering with an advanced system was examined using a US EPA tier 4 final (tier 4f) engine equipped with a cooled exhaust gas recirculation system and diesel exhaust fluid-based selective catalytic reduction system, but not with a DPF system. The tier 4f engine contributed substantially less than the tier 2 engine to the EC and OC mass, aerosol number, and CO, NO, and NO2 concentrations. The tier 4f engine was very effective in reducing aerosol mass, NO, and NO2 concentrations, but it was not equally effective in reducing aerosol number concentrations. The implementation of viable exhaust after treatment systems and advanced diesel power packages could be instrumental to the underground mining industry to secure a clean, economical, and dependable source of power for mobile equipment.

Weak rock mass and poor flow of material can cause excessive ore loss and dilution in sublevel caving. This paper proposes a method to establish design parameters for an inclined deposit within a weak rock mass and evaluates its effectiveness through a case study. In order to solve the problem of low production capacity and poor safety conditions of sublevel caving mining at the Yingfangzi silver mine in China and to ensure a smooth production from the refractory ore body, it is necessary to select appropriate stope structure parameters. Based on random medium theory of gravity flow and the improved equation of ore discharge in random medium, an end wall drawing experiment is carried out to determine the optimum design and flow parameters. It was observed from the experiment that, due to the influence of the randomness of particle movement, there is a mismatch in the flow parameter measurement. The flow characteristics and distribution of the marker particles are different from that of the tested particles resulting in large drawbody shape distortion. The study finds that the flow parameters obtained by the new method are more practical and account for drawpoint width and recommends that the new method for determining the sublevel stope height is used when the drawbody is a non-standard ellipsoid. The outcomes have shown a significant reduction in the dilution and improvement in the recovery rates, and the safety and efficiency of mining have been greatly improved.

While benchmarking the integrated finite-volume code MULTIFLO against the analytical solution of Philip et al. (1989) for cylindrical underground openings, we found numerical simulation of dripping threshold flux consistently higher than the analytical solution for both rectangular and unstructured grids. The magnitude of error is proportional to the alpha parameter characterizing capillarity. This may bias estimates of repository performance towards non-conservatism.

Unfortunately from 1991 through 1995, 44 miners were fatally injured in the stone industry. Of these 12 occurred at underground mines from a total work force of less than 2,000 miners. Nine of these 12 miners were fatally injured in falls of roof or rib. A safer environment for the miners can be achieved by evaluating the nature of the hazardous ground and by developing more efficient and effective ground control strategies. Roof and rib conditions in the underground stone industry were observed and assessed at 33 mines in Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Maryland, Missouri, Pennsylvania, and West Virginia [(Figure 1)]. Hazard assessment indicated that those ground failures occurring under moderate to substantial overburden (> 30 m [l00 ft]) were caused by stress concentrations and geologic structures. Ground failures near the surface are caused by solution (water) processes. Selection of the mining horizon and mine layout decisions tremendously influence ground stability.

Talc has been the focus of recent civil litigation based on claims that asbestos minerals exist in talc deposits and therefore have caused asbestos-related diseases in those who have regularly used talc products. Such litigation, and ensuing confusion over the petrology and asbestos content of these deposits, challenges the talc mining industry in Montana and elsewhere in the world. The talc deposits in southwest Montana were formed by hydrothermal alteration of dolomitic marbles and are still actively mined. In general, talc formed by hydrothermal alteration of preexisting carbonate rocks is known to be nearly monomineralic and lacking in amphiboles. This paper includes data from analyses of representative ore samples from this mining region in southwest Montana. The results conclude that the presence of asbestos minerals — both amphiboles and chrysotile — is unlikely and that the ores are nearly monomineralic, as expected. Samples were characterized using a suite of analytical methods, namely, powder X-ray diffraction, X-ray fluorescence spectroscopy and electron microprobe analyses, which allowed us to determine the minerals present and the formation process. Our data and interpretations suggest that previous identification of asbestos minerals in these deposits is not accurate.

In underground stopes that require more than minimal support, backfill is almost universally used. The term cut and fill stopingis used in a broad sense in this section, which describes underground mining methods requiring support. Support in stopes can be classified as local or short-term and general or long-term. Local support for the back of a stope, for example, can be accomplished with rock bolts or timber stulls. General support for the walls of the stope is provided by backfill. Local support provides a safe working place for the stope miners. General support, provided by backfill, preserves the access way to the stope and prevents large scale dilution of ore. The telephone rings at 3:20 a.m. An exasperated voice on the other end says, “There has been a mine explosion at Mine No. 5 and we have not heard from three units of men.” Twenty-three minutes later, the phone rings again and another panicked voice says, “There is something wrong at the slurry impoundment, the pool level has just dropped five feet and we are trying to figure out what is wrong” Thirty minutes later, the mobile phone rings. An excited security guard says, “We have reports of thick black water running down the right fork and left fork of Straight Creek and both seem to be rising in the banks.” If this is not enough excitement, the mobile phone rings again. A stressed company official says, “I just heard a report that black slurry is running out of the portals of XYZ Co. No. 2 Mine, which is adjacent to our No. 5 Mine.” Is this all some kind of dream or nightmare? More importantly, though, if this happens, what do you do? Most people think: “It can’t happen to me.” But mine explosions do happen, slurry impoundments can rupture and creeks can flood with black water causing damage to others, including competitors. A mine’s response must be quick, cool-headed, calculated and effective. This article examines the issues, concerns and ramifications of this hypothetical disaster. The authors then present a systematic crisis-management response.

This paper presents analysis of damages and rehabilitation design for three major French rail-way tunnels built in mid-19th century. The La Nerthe tunnel underwent ovalization deformation with excessive displacement at the springline, and pinching and bursting of the liner bricks at the crown due to tectonic residual stresses with very high lateral earth pressure. The Saint-Louis les Aygalades tunnel invert was subjected to undulatory deformation resulting in tracks misalignment, which was caused by non-homogeneity of mechanical and hydraulic properties of the ground. The Roches de Condrieu tunnel required widening to comply with the increase in dynamic envelope of trains due to their larger cross section and higher speed. The applied rehabilitation methods and constraints of work in these busy mainline railway tunnels have been discussed in detail.

What a difference a year makes. One year ago, the iron mining industry and the steelmaking industry in the United States were in trouble. Many companies were in bankruptcy, and talk of plant and mine shutdowns was rampant. At that time, it seemed difficult, if not impossible, to remain competitive with imported steel. In addition, the World Trade Organization declared as illegal the tariffs placed on imported steel. And many questioned the viability of the ironmining and steel industry in the United States. At that time, global economic conditions were the main contributors to the industry’s problems. However, since last year’s meeting, changes in global economics have actually helped the steel industry in the United States. Heavy global demand for steel has caused raw-material shortages worldwide. Much of the increased demand is a result of the economic boom in China. In addition, because of a weak U.S. dollar and higher international freight rates, steel imports into the United States have been reduced to about 50 percent of recent levels. These factors have contributed to a rebirth of the U.S. iron mining and steel industries.

"INTRODUCTION Outer space technology and exploration have reached a tipping point so that mining and mineral processing in outer space is now a certainty and not a dream. Several competing companies, worldwide, are well on the way to building spaceships to land on the Moon and eventually mine the Moon and asteroids for volatiles, rare earth metals and Helium-3. The Google Lunar XPrize offers a $30 million prize1. China has recently landed a spacecraft on the Moon. The European Space Agency, with cooperation from the United States, has landed a spacecraft, Philae, on a comet. And, Mars One is planning a one-way trip to establish a settlement of humans on Mars. How and why are the Moon and asteroids and their resources of interest to private space industry and companies? Why are the Moon and asteroids viewed as a potential business venue? GEOLOGY OF THE MOON AND ASTEROIDS –WHY DO WE WANT TO MINE THERE? Space enterprises are actively working towards establishing and operating lunar and asteroid mining locations for resource extraction, resource processing, conversion to salable products, and distribution of the products and services in space and to Earth and beyond2. Forty-five years ago, the Apollo manned missions to the Moon returned rocks and regolith to Earth, which were studied and analyzed. What they found was that the Moon contains valuable minerals and resources. These minerals are largely due to meteor and asteroid impacts, which have, over eons, created this mineral rich regolith. These impacts have occurred on Earth as well, for billions of years, particularly early on in the history of the solar system. However, on Earth, wind, water, and vegetation have erased most of these impacts. On the Moon, in contrast, the only weathering is caused by subsequent impacts and the solar wind. The Moon regolith contains valuable rare earth minerals, platinum-group minerals (particularly where the Moon has been impacted by asteroids), volatiles (useful for processing and habitation), Helium-3 and titanium. Almost non-existent on earth, Helium-3 is abundant and accessible on the Moon and can be used in nuclear fusion power plants, producing much more energy than fission reactions and with much less radioactive waste. One of the main reasons Helium-3 is sought after as a fusion fuel is because there are no neutrons generated as a reaction product. Governments and private companies focus on mining of Helium-3 on the Moon as a basis for their economic models. Moon Express, one of the private companies who is planning on mining on the Moon, will recover moon rocks to fund its early operations25. Subsequently, it will recover Helium-3, platinum, and rare earth metals, as it engages in surface mining operations."

Environmental and economic costs related to equipment fuel consumption and carbon dioxide (CO2) emission present a substantial challenge to the mining industry. Haul trucks are an integral part of the overall surface mining system and they consume a significant quantity of fuel. Consequently, they produce a significant amount of CO2. The objective of this research is to (i) establish a mathematical relationship among a truck?s fuel consumption, power and engine load factors and (ii) determine the amount of a truck?s CO2 emission and the associated cost that may arise from potential CO2 legislation. In order to achieve these objectives, the authors have considered original equipment manufacturer (OEM) haul trucks, which are commonly used in surface mining operations. The research presented here may be used by mining professionals to help determine the cost and environmental burden of the trucks? application and efficiently manage energy consumption.

A ventilation study using tracer gas was conducted at a western US coal mine. The objective of the study was to evaluate the movement of longwall face air exchanges between the face and worked-out area and to document the presence or absence of face airflow pathways between these locations. The mine operator uses a bleederless longwall ventilation system with a back return and a blowing mine ventilation system. The study was conducted on an active panel and included both underground and surface monitoring sites. The study used sulfur hexafluoride (SF6) released as a slug on the longwall face and in the front of the gob inby the face. The velocity of the tracer gas movement in the gob was 0.019 m/s (3.7 fpm). The rate of movement for the overall tracer gas slug averaged about 0.0091 m/s (1.8 fpm). A separate tracer gas test initiated with the release of SF6 into the legs of the first shield showed the existence of more than one pathway of face air in the general direction from the headgate towards the tailgate corner. Maintaining adequate ventilation air on longwall faces is important for worker safety and for the dilution of methane emitted from the face and caved gob. A more detailed characterization of longwall system air and gas movement allows a mine to better assess its ventilation design for controlling gas on the face and in the gob.

The volume of data produced by operating mines has increased substantially over the last 10 years. However, the volume of data and analytical capability has been negatively correlated to equipment productivity for at least the last seven years. In simple terms, as the volume of data has increased equipment performance has declined. Table (2010) tells us that ?The calamity of the information age is that the toxicity of data increases much faster than its benefits?. More data does not guarantee improving productivity; but more data is also not the cause of declining productivity. Similarly, when equipment performance does start to improve, (it must ? there really is no option if mines want to remain competitive), it will not be the data nor analytics which causes it; it will be the people using the resources at their disposal; including the data. Data and analytics can help if the toxicity of the data can be managed. The simplest form of business improvement using data is benchmarking. The objective of benchmarking is to understand and evaluate the current position of a process in relation to ?best practice? and to identify areas and means of performance improvement. The application of benchmarking involves four key steps: (1) Analyze and understand in detail existing processes; (2) Analyze and understand the processes of others; (3) Compare your own performance with that of the others analyzed; and (4) Design and implement the changes necessary to close the performance gap(s). There are however, many in the mining industries who have shunned equipment benchmarking because they believe that, ?every mine is a pilot?. In other words, the differences between mine operations make comparisons between them of little value. This paper will present a valid approach to benchmarking equipment performance and reliability, accounting for the differences and similarities between operations, producing a result which can be used to add value to mines around the world.

Powered haulage continues to be a large safety concern for the mining industry, accounting for approximately 50%of the mining fatal accidents every year. Among these fatal accidents, haul-truck-related accidents are the most common, with 6 of 28 and 6 of 27 fatal accidents occurring in 2017 and 2018, respectively. To better understand why these accidents continue to occur and what can be done to prevent them, researchers reviewed the 91 haul-truck-related fatal accidents that occurred in the USA from 2005 to 2018 and performed bow-tie analyses using the final reports published by the Mine Safety and Health Administration. The analyses explore the context of the accidents with a focus on the initiating event, event outcome, hazards present, and possible preventative and mitigative controls. Overall, the vast majority of the accidents resulted in a haul truck colliding with the environment, and the majority of these events were initiated by loss of situational awareness or loss of control. The majority of the hazards were related to design and organizational controls. The results of this study suggest a need to investigate operator decision-making and organizational controls and to focus on improving design and operation controls such as mine design and operational procedures.

Recurring movements remotely connected with the Murray fracture zone and the San Andreas fault complex, together with the slow northwestward drift affecting the Baja California peninsula, could progressively have accentuated the tensional situation already connected with the anticlinorium in southern Arizona. From the fragmentary data gathered on the Texas lineament, it appears that a very mild curvature, concave to the northeast, may be present along this belt throughout Arizona. Those localities where the successive changes in direc¬tion of the strands of the lineament belt seem to occur do generally coincide with intersections of both north-northwestern and northeastern breaks. It is along the outward, southern fringe of the belt (at such structural centers like Bisbee, Baboquivari, Ajo) that the greatest impact of regional movements could be expected to have occurred through tangential-torsional stresses. Although it si accepted that the north-northwestern and more particu¬larly the northeastern fractures in Southeast Arizona are propitious to or partially responsible for mineralization, it seems undeniable that the Texas lineament belt must have greatly increased the potentialities for ore throughout the Arizona copper province. While intrusive bodies occur near major intersections, with the Texas lineament belt as a common denominator, it seems, the ore deposits are to be found close to one of the intrusive stocks, varying in distance from contiguity (Bisbee) to one or two miles away (Silver Bell orebodies).

The construction of the La Joya hydropower plant (Costa Rica) was awarded by the Spanish power company, Union Fenosa, to the Italian Joint Venture formed by the companies SELI SpA and Ghella SpA. The project, located in a mountainous region of central Costa Rica, includes a 7.9-km-long head race tunnel having an excavation diameter of 6.18 m. A double-shielded TBM was selected to perform the tunnel excavation, which involved mainly volcanic rocks in variable but generally very weak conditions. The tunnel crossed long and continuous sections in completely weathered rock masses with no residual cohesion and with high water inflows. The paper describes and analyzes: The special methods adopted to overcome these sections with the TBM includ-ing face stabilization by chemical grout and foams as well small by-pass tunnels in the crown combined with TBM advance/support The grouting design and the grouting method that was implemented to meet the waterproof design specifications and restore the original groundwater level in the mountain The additional geological investigations performed to improve the knowledge of the rock mass in front of the TBM and the outcomes of these investigations The performance of the TBM in different ground conditions and on average along the entire tunnel Finally, the author’s comment about the possibility of implementing and improving the technologies experimented with in this project in future similar applications.

Introduction Some people say it is almost impossible to get mining permits in California. Some say the day of the lone mining entrepreneur is past. And some say you cannot make money mining gold where old-timers have already mined it, especially in Tertiary gravels. But a young mining operator and SME member, Tim Callaway, is proving these ideas wrong. Callaway's company, Brush Creek Mining and Development Inc., has the necessary permits for its Gardner's Point gold mine in Sierra County, CA. And, Callaway has secured funds for the 7.7 km'/d (10,000 cypd) Tertiary gravel operation. The company's initial goal is to produce 373 to 466 kg/a (12,000 to 15,000 oz per year) of gold at Gardner's Point mine at a cost of less than $6.43/g ($200 per oz). Feasibility studies are currently being conducted to consider product levels up to the 1555 kg/a (50,000 oz per year) involving additional plants and infrastructure. While exploring for other hard-rock properties, the Brush Creek company already operates the Brush Creek lode gold mine. The mine sits high on a ridge south of Goodyear's Bar, which is located on the North Yuba river. It might be noted that the Brush Creek mine has been the subject of media stories recounting how a mine can operate with sensitivity to the environment. Gardner's Point project In 1983, Callaway negotiated with the Gardners Point Ltd. Partnership for control of the Gardner's Point property. The Partnership had been engaged for three years in securing permits, mapping and drilling, and test mining. The Partnership actually mined about 43.5 dam3 (57,000 cu yd) of gravel, which yielded 25.2 kg (810 oz) of free gold. Later, the Brush Creek company acquired ownership of the property. The company then began its own exploration and development program. As underground development proceeded at the Brush Creek mine, plans matured for a high-volume operation at Gardner's Point. Australian and English investors contacted Callaway. A joint venture was negotiated. The Australian owners became majority participants; the Brush Creek company, a minority participant and the operator. The Australian investors agreed to contribute $3.5 million (60%) to the Brush Creek Joint Ventures. The Brush Creek company will contribute its expertise as well as assets and liabilities valued at $2.3 million (40%). About $2 million has been allocated to the Gardner's Point project. Later, Brush Creek Mining and Development Inc. sold 50.4% of the company's common stock to English investors for $5.4 million. Callaway negotiated this private placement, which permits further exploration of projects being investigated. Geography and history The Gardner's Point mine is located in the northern Sierra Nevada of California, about 9.6 km (6 miles) east of the little town of La Porte in Plumas County. The mine lies high on a ridge above Slate Creek, which divides Plumas and Sierra Counties. La Porte is accessible from the Sacramento area by a winding, paved, two-lane highway. But the mine is reached only by two different unpaved county and Forest Service roads. Both roads include steep grades in and out of the Slate Creek canyon.
