"SynopsisScattered mining was practised on Kusasalethu Mine (previously Elandsrand Gold Mine) prior to 1998, but at deeper mining levels it was no longer feasible, since it would have resulted in unacceptably high stress levels and energy release rates. Longwall mining was not adopted at these depths as the mine required a more flexible mining method owing to the highly variable grade and the presence of geological structures. A mining method was developed that consisted of dip stabilizing pillars for regional support, as well as bracket pillars to clamp geological structures. A strict sequence of extraction was followed and this, together with the particular layout, was called the ‘sequential grid mining method’. This method addressed two key problems, namely negotiating adverse geology and the erratic grade of the Ventersdorp Contact Reef (VCR) orebody. However, a significant drop in production rates resulted in the need for alternatives and improvements to the original mine design. Modifications to the design were proposed in order to increase production rates, and an investigation to consider the rock engineering implications of these modifications was conducted. The study indicated that the modified method, called the ‘multi-raise mining method’, appears to be feasible and might address some of the production problems that were experienced with the original sequential grid design. An analysis of actual seismic data showed no significant differences between the original sequential grid mining and the implemented multi-raise mining. The numerical modelling of the mining layouts showed slightly higher interim energy release rates (ERRs) and average pillar stress (APS) levels during the extraction process. The final values are nevertheless identical to that of the original sequence. The study also investigated the use of a modelled moment method to analyse future seismic trends. The study illustrated that the expected seismic trends will be very similar for the multi-raise method compared to the original sequential grid mining method. This study is nevertheless considered of a preliminary nature and ongoing monitoring and analysis of seismic data at the mine is required to verify the response of the rock mass to the modified sequence and increased extraction rate. In particular, future work needs to investigate the effect of mining rate (advance rates in individual panels as well as volume of mining in particular raise lines) on the level of seismicity."

By implementing a converter downstream of the reduction furnace it is possible to broaden the product range significantly. The converter can also successfully be used to strip furnace slag from chromium oxide. Some process alternatives and their economical, practical and environmental implications are studied using process models developed based on UHT?s long experience in stainless steelmaking, stainless steel process control and charge chrome refining. Keywords: Stellenbosch, university, teaching, research The pyrometallurgical activities at Stellenbosch University are reviewed in this paper. The history of the activities, both in teaching and research, is outlined, as well as some of the perceived research opportunities that the University of Stellenbosch is currently focusing on. The course content, as well as its relationship to other courses in the curriculum, is discussed and the interfaces between the courses are explained to present a holistic picture of the education an engineering graduate receives in process pyrometallurgy.

The distinction between real estate ownership and that of interests in the property is fundamental to the appraisal of mineral properties. This distinction affects the nature and understanding of security of tenure and, consequently, the perception of what constitutes fair value. Legal matters are a particular concern because of their influence on security of tenure, ownership definition and use restrictions. The dynamics of the market and the complex interrelationships between the factors of production define value at a specific point in time for the bundle of rights, interests and assets that constitute a mineral property. Because each mineral property is unique, physically immobile and of a wasting nature, its usefulness to its owner and society must be optimized. The US Appraisal Institute (2001) classified the forces that affect land use as the cultural, political and economic attitudes of society. These forces culminate in laws that often dictate the purposes for doing appraisals. Once the legal definition of the asset is understood, valuers can decide on the valuation process that will support the final valuation approach.

Application of magnetic separation was investigated for the enrichment of colemanite ores by removing the magnetic gangue fraction. The detailed XRD analysis of the ore has indicated that the gangue fraction is composed predominantly of the iron-bearing silicates such as smectite and, to a lesser extent, illite. Magnetic susceptibility measurements of the colemanite and gangue samples have proved that colemanite is diamagnetic in character whereas gangue fraction is weakly paramagnetic to allow the removal of this fraction by magnetic separation. Magnetic separation of the crushed and sized ore samples (-5 mm +75 µm) was performed using a high intensity permanent magnetic separator. Under the test conditions a colemanite concentrate (41.29 wt.% B2O3) was found to be produced from the crushed ore (30.76 wt.% B2O3) at a recovery of 96.76%. These findings suggest that magnetic separation has great potential as an alternative process for the production of a concentrate of commercially sufficient grade.

The mining industry is facing a serious skills resource shortage, growing commodity demand and cyclical prices. This makes focus and allocation of resources in the early stages of project development very important. To assist with these six key elements in the project prioritization process is proposed, namely: 1) Define the project vision, objectives and business case, 2) Determine the potential show stoppers, 3) Determine the key value drivers, 4) Track changes and provide regular feedback, 5) Evaluate the alternatives and, 6) Ensure proper gate management governance at the decision point. Incorporating these elements in the project development process will assist in resource allocation and focus on the high value aspects of projects and alternatives during the early stages of the project development lifecycle. The transmission of excessive vibration to the human body can cause physical stress that may result in crippling pain or permanent disability. Rock drills are known to transmit high levels of vibration that are difficult to attenuate through conventional approaches to vibration isolation. However, it can be shown that once the ISO frequency weighting has been applied, most of the vibratory effect of the rock drill?s motion is concentrated at the drill?s operating frequency. This observation opens the way for utilizing a concept known as vibration absorption, aimed at attenuating the rock drill?s vibration. In essence this entails using the inertia of a secondary vibratory system to counteract the motion of the handle. This article documents an investigation into the use of such an absorber for attenuating rock drill vibration and demonstrates the feasibility of such an approach. A mathematical model of such an absorbing handle was developed and used for design studies. Based on these investigations an experimental prototype model was manufactured and tested. A significant reduction in vibration levels could be achieved.

The Imhoflot G-Cell, a new development in the pneumatic flotation technology (which incorporates centrifugal forces in the separating vessel) is a recent innovation in the mineral processing world. The G-Cell was invented by Dr Rainer Imhof and commercialised by Maelgwyn Mineral Services Ltd. In a short time span a number of plants and units have been successfully commissioned in the mineral processing industry. In addition, a number of industrial G-Cell flotation plants are in the process of construction for the purpose of coal preparation and environmental remediation. In this paper two industrial installations have been highlighted together with a pilot plant test programme investigating ultra fine flotation recovery for a base metal operation.

An underground wet shotcrete trial was completed last year to determine the effectiveness of wet shotcrete as an alternative support mechanism to dry shotcrete in the kimberlite environment. The wet shotcrete was manufactured at the underground batch plants, transported to site using an agiecar and transferred to the shotcrete pump. The wet shotcrete is pumped to the nozzle where compressed air at 7 bar and an accelerator, Meyco SA 160, is added and enables the shotcrete to be placed successfully onto the tunnel wall. No tunnel guard was previously placed on the sidewall and hangingwall. Geotechnical testing indicates that the Grace fibre performed extremely well with the energy absorption tests at 7 kg/m3and 8kg/m3where both achieved over the mine requirement of 750joules. The Grace fibre and wet shotcrete mix also achieved a compressive strength in excess of 55 MPa, well above the 45 MPa requirement for Premier Mine. In South Africa there are two suitable wet shotcrete machines available for the mining industry, the Spreymec, manufactured by Tamrock and the Fermel/Meyco wet shotcrete machine. The Spreymec is a fully imported machine. The Fermel component is manufactured in South Africa and the Meyco shotcrete components are imported and supported by MBT (Master Builder Technologists) in South Africa. The Fermel/Meyco machine is assembled in South Africa. Premier Mine has allocated some R2, 100,000 towards the implementation of the wet shotcrete system. If implementation is successful there should be an internal rate of return gain of 76% with regard to this project.

Mineralogical applications are described from pyrometallurgical operations. Examples are given of studies and investigations involving mineralogy in chemical-looping combustion, feed monitoring to platinum-smelting furnaces, and losses to slag in base metal and platinum smelting.

The paper provides a brief review of a multivariate uniform conditioning and a localized multivariate uniform conditioning (LMUC) technique, and presents a production reconciliation case study based on a porphyry copper-gold deposit in Peru. The reconciliation study compares the longterm LMUC mineral resources model (typical of new mining projects, which are invariably based on drilling data on a relatively large grid) to the corresponding production blast-hole grade control model, as well as the final plant production.

The ability of an explosive to break rock is influenced considerably by the extent of confinement in the blasthole. It is believed that confinement is improved by the use of adequate stemming. The aim of this paper is to present the results of the first and second stages of developing a stemming performance testing rig for small diameter boreholes. The rig was used to compare and contrast the performance of different designs of products. The results showed that different stemming products have differences in terms of their functionality, which can have a major impact on the efficiency of rock breaking. Two test procedures were used, one through the exclusive use of compressed air and the second using a purpose-built high pressure test rig with small quantities of explosives. Both tests were used to identify and evaluate the ability of various stemming products to resist the escape of explosive gas through the collar of a blasthole. An investigation was done to determine the types of stemming products most commonly used in South African underground hard rock mines, and these products were used during the tests. The first stage of tests using compressed air only did not prove adequate to predict with certainty the pressure behaviour in the borehole of a particular product under high pressure conditions. The purpose-built high pressure test rig also did not prove to be a very effective tool to test stemming products under high pressure conditions. The test rig incorporated only the effect of gas pressure on the stemming product, and excluded the effect of the shock wave. This study therefore proved that to take into account only the gas pressure generated in the blasthole is not sufficient to effectively test stemming product performance.

The purpose of this paper is to establish a qualitative method to estimate the risk level (e.g. rating and ranking) resulting from mining activity. Risk is the product of two factors: probability of failure and cost of consequences. A resultant assessment scale matrix is then used to assign a risk index value which is directly proportional to the potential for excavation instability. A case study, the No. 1 Shear East orebody at Vale?s Garson Mine in Sudbury, Ontario will be examined. A three-dimensional, elastoplastic, finite difference model (FLAC 3D) is presented for a mine development intersection situated 1.5 km below ground surface. The developed assessment scale matrix is used to estimate risk index for intersection (2981) located on 5000 level. The results are presented and categorized with respect to risk-index value, probability of instability, cost of consequence, and mining stage.

When slope angles are designed during open pit optimization, there is a risk factor applied in steepening the slopes. The steepening of slope angles has implications for the safety and economics of the mining operation. The steeper the slope angles, the greater the probability of slope failure. Although a slope failure will result in added costs, the challenge is to compile an accurate cost-benefit exercise optimizing the economic benefits of the project without exposing mine workers and equipment to unacceptable risk of rockfalls. A balance between the safety of the operation and the economics of the investment is therefore required. The ideal situation is to have a slope monitoring system that will predict slope failure by detecting any ground movement before the actual failure occurs. This early warning will allow the risk factor to be applied with a high degree of confidence, knowing that the risk will be adequately mitigated. The objective of this paper is to provide guidelines on how to design an optimal survey slope monitoring system. It is the authors? view that for a survey monitoring system to yield desirable results, it should adhere to survey principles such as working from the whole to part and consistently cross-checking. The case study used is Jwaneng Mine, and the design strategy outlined can be used as a guideline for developing a new slope monitoring system or to optimize an existing one.

"Gold bearing deposits of the Witwatersrand basin are generally less than 2m thick and require conventional narrow-reef mining methods for extraction and employ explosives as a means of rock breaking. Optimal utilization of explosives is dependent on the overall design of the blast. The under-utilization of explosives arises when shot-holes are drilled inconsistently, overcharged, and when tamping is absent. This can be rectified by emphasizing the importance of good drilling practices as part of induction programmes and refresher courses. The project was aimed at determining whether or not explosives are being optimally utilized at project site. This was investigated through a study of the properties of explosives, mine standards, and recommendations for usage. Underground observations were made to determine whether or not mine standards were being adhered to. Historic data was obtained to establish the historic relationship existing between the quantity of explosives used (kg) and the production output (m2). This was then compared to the quantity of explosives the mine expects to use per unit of production. The results obtained were analysed to determine the presence and extent of over- or under-utilization. It was found that explosives are being under-utilized at the mine. More explosives are ordered than expected per unit of production. The explosives’ properties are not thoroughly exploited during blasting, thereby requiring the use of more explosives than prescribed. On 16 July 2004, at 07:10 a collapse of about 1.8 million m3 (about 4 ½ million tonnes) took place on the north wall on Nchanga Open Pit This collapse was the result of a developing instability that was first identified when the benches in this area were exposed during September 2002. The NOP Geotechnical and Survey Departments closely monitored the development of the failure. Control measures were implemented to reduce risk to men and equipment. These measures were continually improved and adjusted in reaction to observations and changing conditions. The purpose of this paper is to describe in detail the monitoring results that were obtained both by traditional methods and the novel Slope Stability Radar System (SSR). Difficulties encountered in establishing critical deformation levels and deformation rates that can be used to predict the onset of collapse are described. Details of the monitoring and control measures, which led to the successful completion of mining in the area, are also described in this paper.

The use of Molecular Recognition Technology (MRT), a highly selective separation technology using specifically designed ligands (such as macrocycles), has been demonstrated to be an effective treatment process for removal of several ions that are commonly found in many hydrometallurgical circuits as well as in environ-mental treatment operations. Ions removed by MRT include base, heavy and transition metals, precious metals, halides, and alkali/alkaline earths. A MRT pilot plant run was conducted at Zincor to demonstrate the cobalt/nickel purification of zinc electrolyte, and to recover saleable pure cobalt/nickel sulphate solution. The MRT process holds various advantages, which include the elimination of a catalyst such as arsenic trioxide, conventionally used in cobalt and nickel cementation. SuperLig® 138 can be used to remove cobalt and nickel from120?170 g/l Zn-solutions at pH 1?2. The Zincor MRT application demonstrated its capability of concentrating large volumes o copper barren impure solution at low cobalt and nickel concentration levels in the feed, to small solution volumes at high cobalt and nickel concentrations. Around 99.5% of the cobalt was removed from solution with cobalt impurity levels in feed varying between 10 mg/l and 26 mg/l.

In any process or organization inefficiencies are costly. In times of abundance this reality often does not receive much attention. During such times the focus is rather on increasing capacity to increase production. However, there is a growing awareness in the world of tougher economic, social as well as environmental conditions, and enterprises find themselves facing greater demands for accountability towards shareholders, the environment and the public, as well as growing competition for market share and limited global resources. This reality is no different in ensuring a sustainable mineral sands operation. In order to achieve this, any operation needs to be stripped of all process as well as operational inefficiencies. In this context it has become essential for any Mineral Separation Plant (MSP) to have the necessary process monitoring and control systems in place to continually monitor and optimize the production of on-spec products and maximize operational efficiency and consistency. The MSP Grade Control Solution developed by Crusader Systems and running on top of the CSense platform contributes towards these goals by improving the consistent production of on-grade product. This allows the process to operate closer to the maximum allowable product grade constraint, which in turn maximizes production.

"SynopsisThe global resources and commodities market has become highly competitive. While southern Africa’s abundance of minerals resources is still unrivalled, it has lost considerable dominance in terms of production output. The sustainability of southern Africa’s mining industry is increasingly becoming dependent on its ability to manage the performance of its operations well. A valuable tool for monitoring and managing performance is the use of key performance areas (KPAs) – which are those areas of performance that are reflected explicitly or implicitly in the vision and strategies of an organization and reflect the critical success factors of the organization. This paper is a review of key performance areas in the southern African mining delivery environment. The KPAs discussed in this paper have been identified by comparing KPAs of the several mining houses engaged in surface mining operations in southern Africa and then extracting those KPAs that are common to most of them. Although the authors support the view that each organization should develop KPAs to specifically fit its needs, the study reveals that five KPAs – safety and health, costs, product quality, fleet management, and delivery should form a default list that covers the key areas that any organization should consider when choosing KPAs. KPIs are those subsets of KPAs that we measure in order to manage KPAs.IntroductionThe global resources and commodities market has become highly competitive.
