The effect of vanadium on the susceptibilities of chromium and chromium-nickel steels to reversible temper embritlement was evaluated. The steels investigated were approximately equivalent to steels of as 970 Grade 708A42 and as 970 Grade 817M40, the major difference being that molybdenum had been replaced by vanadium in various concentrations. It was found that the vanadium had a detrimental effect and, in al the concentrations tested, enhanced the susceptibility to reversible temper embritlement of both the chromium and the chromium-nickel steel. The detrimental role played by vanadium in reversible temper embritlement is explained by a consideration of the effect of vanadium carbide, as well as of free vanadium, in solid solution in ferrite.

The control of dust from mine dumps by G. H. GRANGE Pr. Eng., B.Sc. (Min. Eng.) (Rand) (Fellow) This paper gives a resume of the early attempts to control dust from mine dumps, leading up to the research project undertaken by the Chamber of Mines ResearchLaboratories to explore the possibilities of establishing vegetation on dump surfaces. The ultimate success of this work and details of the principles involved are outlined. Also given are a brief history of the event that culminated in the introduction of the Atmospheric Pollution Prevention Act in 1965, details of the control of dust in terms of this Act, and a short summary of the dust-control work.

The analysis of angular atypicality of lineaments as an aid to mineral exploration by J. P. G. PRETORI USc, M.Sc. (Pret.) (Visitor) and T. C. PARTRIDGE, Ph.D. (Natal) (Visitor) In an exploration project, data pertaining to 84000 lineaments in an area of 25 000 km2 were recorded. The total length of lineaments in intervals of one degree was determined. Angular intervals with Iow length densities were regarded as atypical. The proportion (by length) of lineaments with such atypical orientation was calculated for 5 km X 5 km grid squares. This index of angular atypicality was contoured and, used in conjunction with conventional photogeological techniques, contributed in a large measure to the success of the investigation.

An account is given of the production of three types of experimental high-chromium duplex stainless steel. The alloys had chromium contents of 22, 29, and 35 per cent. The partitioning of the main alloying elements between the austenite and ferite phases was determined, and the effect of the alloying elements chromium, nickel, and molybdenum on the mechanical properties and corrosion resistance of the duplex stainless steels is summarized. The phase compositions of the different duplex stainless steels were measured by different techniques, and the values obtained were correlated. The cracking occasionally observed during the thermo mechanical processing of these alloys was studied, and is explained as being the result of known embritlement processes.

High-temperature phase relations and thermodynamics of the condensed phase region of the Pb-S-O system at 1473 K were analysed by use of the available information. The sub-regular solution models on Pb-PbS and PbO-PbSO4 continuous melts were used in conjunction to generate a consistent set of thermodynamic and phase equilibrium conditions for the Pb-S-O system. The directions and distributions of conjugation lines between melts of this system were derived with relevant activity and composition data. The calculations permitted the thermodynamic analysis of direct lead smelting and the construction of isothermal reaction diagrams for the system in terms of oxygen and sulphur partial pressures at 1473 K.

The South African gold and platinum deposits were formed in very different ways and yet both have many similarities. They are flat dipping tabular ore bodies, extremely narrow and located in hard abrasive country rock. The mining methods employed are also similar. Primary access is via shafts or declines; secondary access is via haulages and cross cuts; and tertiary access is from raises. The proposed solution for rapid access described in this paper is focussed on the haulages, cross cuts and raises. The non-explosive rock breaking method has many other applications, however, it is the integration with the Tunnel Digging Machine that results in the first, cost effective, Continuous Tunnelling Machine for hard rock mining.

Tin mining and smelting in the Transvaal during the Iron Age by H. M. FRIEDE*. Ph.D. and R. H. STEEL* (Visitors) This paper reviews the historical, archaeological, and metallurgical evidence on Iron Age tin mining and tin smelting in Southern Africa. The results of the analysis of twenty samples of tin ore, tin slag, and tin ingots found associated with Iron Age materials in the Transvaal (mostly in the Rooiberg area) are reported and discussed. The types of ingots preserved in local collections are described. A small experimental tin-smelting furnace was constructed and worked according to traditional African Iron Age technology. Qualitative and quantitative results of this experiment are reported.

The work described here attempts to underscore the importance of the time lag between the end of a loading phase and the instant a winding drum begins its acceleration phase. Traces generated from a computer-simulation model show that the amplitude of the stress oscillations occurring in mine hoisting cable during the constant velocity-of-ascent phase is a direct result of the temporal sequence employed between the loading and the raising phases. While current and early literature indicates that extensive work has been undertaken on the isolated effects of these two independent sequences, the literature does not appear to contain any documented evidence to suggest an optimal control or interfacing between these two dynamic regimes.

The philosophy behind the design of a rougher cell for the handling of coarse feed and for the maximization of recovery within a given time is presented. The application of this philosophy in cells of 22-litre, 320-litre, and 3 m3 capacity is outlined, and the results of the process testing of these cells are given. In this testing, particular accent was placed on the recovery of water as a guide to the recovery of the finest size of particles, and the rate of recovery of various mineral species. It is concluded that a promising concept has been identified, but that further testing is needed for the firmer establishment of optimal operational parameters in a production environment.

A series of blasting experiments was carried out in an up-dip stope of a gold mine using short-perioddelay electric detonators. The main object of the investigation was to show the interactive effects of short-delay blasting. The delay range over which observations were made was restricted to between 10 and 200 ms. To quantify the blast results, data were collected on fragmentation, throw, position of muckpile, and ground vibration. For comparative purposes, blasting parameters for conventional pyrotechnic sequential firing were also measured. The paper describes the most relevant parts of the study and gives the experimental results. The interactive effects of short-delay blasting are analysed, and some aspects of the breaking mechanism are discussed.

This paper covers in situ stresses in the Earth?s crust prior to any man-made disturbances, such as mining. It introduces the Southern African Stress Database, which contains primitive stress measurements obtained from locations spread all over southern Africa. The measured stress data shows large variability without any visible trends, except a relationship with increasing depth. The stress database is reviewed briefly, establishing means to measure the variability or dispersion in the measurements, and showing that the dispersion is not as much a result of experimental error as it is a feature of primitive stress. The paper demonstrates from the beginning that the state of stress in rock is highly variable, but that there are well-defined maximum and minimum limits to all the stress components in rock. Formal error analysis is introduced to check the consistency of the database and to separate out a database of consistent stress measurements for use in a primitive stress model. The aim is to provide a picture of primitive crustal stress based on objective stress measurements together with interpretations of how the primitive stress can be affected by the five main influences; namely, depth, rock mass properties, tectonism, isostacy, and erosion. Four elementary models for primitive stress are introduced and compared with the measured data. It is quite clear that none of the elementary models is sufficient to describe the data. In the absence of a better model, this paper suggests a generic model based on the Hoek-Brown failure criterion and the consistent stress database, since it incorporates the variability in the stress tensor that is likely to be encountered underground all over southern Africa. "Steepening of slopes provides the means to reduce waste extraction and increase ore recovery in open pit mines; however, it may also adversely affect safety by posing a higher risk of slope failure. The implementation of slope monitoring programmes is recommended to manage this risk inherent in steeper slopes. In this paper, the design and evaluation of monitoring campaigns to measure subsurface deformation and groundwater pore pressure in open pit mines is presented. The monitoring programmes were applied to a theoretical case of an open pit mine designed using DeepMine software (BOAMine SpA, 2015). Mine plans were developed based on the initial base case scenario with monitoring programmes considered for four types of monitoring instrumentation: two established technologies, in-place inclinometers (IPIs) and vibrating wire piezometers (VWPs); one emerging technology, the ShapeAccelArray (SAA); and a novel technology under development, the Enhanced Networked Smart Markers (ENSMs). Technical and economic appraisals of the monitoring programmes and sensitivity analysis of the developed mine plans showed that using ENSMs spaced every 4 m had the lowest cost per unit of data gathered. IntroductionSeveral open pit mines have already exceeded their design life and, as they become deeper and reach depths over 1000 m, they face higher rock stress levels and tensile deformations (Stacey and Xianbin, 2004; Stacey et al., 2003). The more complex the conditions in modern open pit mines, the more difficult it is to achieve long-lasting, stable pit slopes and to meet the mine’s economic needs: maximize financial returns, minimize risks to operational safety, achieve optimal ore recovery, and minimize waste extraction (Stacey, 2009). Steepening of slopes provides the means to reduce waste extraction and increase ore recovery (Stacey, 2009; Calderon and Tapia, 2006; Bye and Bell, 2001; Jefferies, Lorig, and Alvarez, 2008); however, it may adversely affect operational safety, as steeper slopes are less stable than shallow slopes (Steffen et al., 2008; Mphathiwa and Cawood, 2014)."

The development of 3D multi-parametric models facilitate the provision of resource information well in advance of the mining face. Using the model, one can evaluate mining areas not only for grade and tonnage predictions but also for predictions of rock mass quality. Blast design and milling requirements can be derived from the rock mass quality predictions. This information can be used for overall mine planning and evaluation, costing, production optimization and slope design. This allows the full range of mining activities and costs to be interconnected, there by lowering costs and improving efficiencies through the application of the multi-parametric model. Feasibility studies for new projects require an expected budget expenditure estimate to within5% of actual costs. This level of accuracy is expected by mining companies and investors but cannot be achieved without a sound knowledge of the rock mass variability. By developing a 3Dmulti-parametric model as part of the feasibility study and using the same geological model exploration boreholes, a significantly better understanding of the rock mass conditions can be obtained. This rock mass information can be used for equipment selection, economic pit layouts, processing plant design, underground mining layouts and support requirements, to name but a few design parameters that depend on rock mass conditions. The initiative at Anglo Platinums, Potgietersrust Platinum Ltd.?s (PPRust) operation, has delivered significant results showing improvements across the mine to mill value chain. These include increased loading rates, reduced electricity and crushing consumables, as well as higher plant throughput. The ore reserve model has gained international acceptance as an invaluable tool for a mining operation. Certainly most financial organizations will not invest in a mining project that does not have an ore reserve model. There is the potential for multi-parametric models to be recognized as vital tools in the mining process, as is the case with ore reserve models.

Metso Minerals Process Technology Asia-Pacific (MMPT-AP) has been working with many mining companies worldwide performing `Mine to Mill' or Process Integration and Optimisation (PIO) studies. MMPT-AP has developed a proven methodology to improve the efficiency of the mine-mill interface and gain maximum benefit. The PIO methodology involves rock characterisation, mathematical modelling and simulation to generate a list of operational and control changes for both the mine and concentrator. Following the methodology, the list of recommendations is developed relatively easily; the more challenging part depends on the company. Success of a PIO project relies on the ability of an organisation to implement change - both operationally and culturally: the human element. When a PIO project is started, there is initial interest and commitment from the company. But how can this be maintained? How does an operation know if the benefit continues? MMPT AP is now developing long-term relationships with clients to ensure that the increased production and improved efficiency continues. Direct and indirect measurements are used to determine the key factors involved and to understand the cause/effect relationships. Simulation tools also can be used to compare current with recommended practices - so when material properties vary over time, the benefits can still be quantified. PIO is about empowerment: by measuring and understanding what parameters affect concentrator performance, the site personnel now have the knowledge to make a difference. Rather than simply reporting variable or poor concentrator performance, operations can predict when production will be affected and put controls in place to prevent it from happening. This requires support and commitment from the company or `buy in'. Ensuring this buy in continues is the challenge facing every company involved in PIO work - but the benefits are well worth it. This paper will review MMPT-AP's experiences in implementing PIO projects in the long term: from both the consulting and operational viewpoints. MMPT-AP's involvement with a number of companies will be discussed as examples of what works and what does not.

Some of the parameters affecting the elution of gold from freshly loaded activated carbon using pure water as an eluant were studied. The procedure involved pretreatment of the gold-loaded activated carbon with a strong reagent of sodium cyanide and sodium hydroxide, followed by elution of the gold with water. Gold-loaded carbon obtained from three different sources was studied. It was shown that the elution temperature was the most critical parameter, and column operation at I !OCC (gauge pressure of 50 to 100 kPa) is suggested. The effects of variations in the concentration of sodium cyanide required for the pretreatment of loaded carbon and of variations in elution flowrate were also investigated. Both these parameters were found to have only a marginal effect on the efficiency of gold elution. The investigation also indicated that gold-elution rates were affected to a considerable degree by the particle size of the carbon concerned. Higher elution flowrates could be used when carbons of finer particle size were eluted. A modified eluate-collection procedure was also developed during the course of the investigation. Oven-drying of the loaded carbon was shown to have little or no effect on the efficiency of the subsequent gold elution. The calcium and silica contents of the various carbon samples were also determined. It was immediately evident that the calcium content was very considerable in the case of loaded carbons originating from carbon-in-pulp operations. Calcium concentration was particularly high where air agitation had been employed in the carbon-contacting circuit. To some degree, the calcium build-up explains the serious carbon fouling taking place, resulting in a decreased efficiency of gold adsorption. The fouling problem was found to be less severe when mechanical agitation was used. No poisoning by calcium carbonate was observed where the pregnant solution had been acidified before it was contacted with the carbon.

Historically the insurance industry's involvement in any project has been relatively late in the process. Often it was a case of the last item to be ticked off the checklist has been to ensure that the insurance is in place. However, in more recent times insurers have imposed more restrictions on the cover they are prepared to provide, which has in some cases necessitated a change in the contracting structure to accommodate the insurance policy(ies). In addition, changing contractual practices have changed the allocation of risk between the various parties involved. This calls for a more proactive approach to the design and implementation of an insurance program for both the construction and operational phases of any resource project. This paper explores how a risk managed approach to the design and implementation of an insurance program for a resource project can align itself with current management approaches to project development. From the authors' experience, this approach is best adopted early on in the project (often in conjunction with the bankable feasibility study) and follows AZ/NZS4360 to objectively examine and compare a wide range of risk exposures of the project in a time-effective manner across the following areas: ? personnel; ? environment; ? general management; ? compliance - legislation, systems, protocols; ? asset management; ? change management; ? financial impacts to the organisation; ? products/services; ? service delivery; and ? technology. Having identified and then analysed the risk exposures according to common consequence and likelihood ratings the next step is to develop a risk map of all considered exposures. The true value of this approach lies in the development and implementation of a risk treatment plan for identified exposures where the exposure is unacceptable. The plans will lead to the optimal solution to the appropriate risk prevention, risk mitigation and risk transfer options available. This paper also examines other benefits to the project that may arise from adopting a risk managed approach in addition to the ability to design an insurance program which recognises the exposures and the ability of the organisation (and other project parties) to retain risk.

Industrial effluent from various industries contains heavy metals that are a serious threat to humans, flora and fauna in water bodies, and the environment. The heavy metals are dumped after precipitation, which has serious environmental consequences. In this paper, a 2D axi-symmetry CFD model has been developed to study the extraction of chromium ion from industrial effluent, in a hollow fibre membrane, using Alamine 336 as the carrier and kerosene as the diluent. The Navier Stokes equation was used to predict the velocity profile of the aqueous and organic phases, and species transport equation, which considers both convective and diffusive mass transfer, was used to predict the concentration profile of the chromium ion in the computational domain. The distribution coefficient was experimentally determined at a pH 4, which was found to be the optimum pH. Numerical simulations were performed considering 11.11 mol/m3 of initial feed concentration for chromium ions and extractant concentration of 0.2 M. Sustained growth in demand for platinum group metals has resulted in an unfettered increase in new projects undertaken by the platinum producers. These projects are outsourced to various degrees. The argument of this paper is that both the client?s project manager and the consultant?s project manager are essential elements in the successful execution of a project. Their roles are not only different but also complementary, and are defined in the paper. Data gained from considerable experience in the South African corporate mining environment underpins the opinions expressed in the paper. Furthermore, an extensive literary search was undertaken to determine trends in related industries outside the South African context. Throughout the argument it is emphasized that project philosophy emanates from a systems view and must be treated as an overarching whole. The elements of project management become meaningless unless they are connected to one another and integrated into a cohesive unit. Advancing the knowledge field of project management is of critical importance to mining investors. There is no doubt that a key determinant of the sustainability of mining business is closely related to the efficiency of all-inclusive project management. From pre-investment and feasibility studies, implementation and execution, to ramping-up to full production, scientific project management has a critical role to play. Guidelines for the pursuance of this ideal are proposed. The introduction contextualizes the subject matter in an overview of the evolution of mine management in South Africa and abroad. Then, brief insight is given into the philosophy of project management. This exposition is confined to the predispositions, presuppositions and defining characteristics of project management. The core of the paper looks at the roles of the client?s project manager in relation to the consultant?s project manager. This section is underpinned by practical experience gained by the author on numerous mining projects. A view is taken of the future of project management in the mining industry. The conclusion summarizes the argument and aligns project management trends in the mining industry.
