The modulus of elasticity of rock material (Ei) is an important rock property that is used as an input parameter in the design stage of engineering projects such as dam and tunnel constructions, mining excavations, and so forth. However, determination of the modulus of elasticity is sometimes difficult to obtain by laboratory tests because high-quality cores are required. For this reason, empirical methods for predicting the modulus of elasticity of rock material have been popular research topics in recently published literature. In this study, the relationships between the uniaxial compressive strength (UCS), unit weight (?) and modulus of elasticity for different types of rocks were analysed by using 177 data obtained from laboratory tests carried out on cores obtained from drill holes within the area of the Kadiköy-Kartal Metro line (Istanbul, Turkey). World HCFeCr production is 6.0 million tonnes. Correspondingly 1.1-1.6 t slag / t FeCr is produced depending on the raw material basis. Essentially all FeCr is produced in submerged arc furnaces, while the role of competitive technologies like DC is limited. In all furnaces fluxes are used to optimize the slag composition. Vital characteristics are smelting point, electric conductivity and viscosity. The main components of FeCr slag are SiO2, Al2O3 and MgO. Additionally it consists of Cr-, Fe-oxides and CaO. Granulated slag and/or classified slag products are produced depending on the production process. The slag products are mainly marketed in road and civil construction purposes but also in producing refractories. Normally crushed and screened slags are produced simultaneously when recovering alloy. The leachate of slag products is low and performance results are excellent. Slag products successfully replace natural sand and macadam. Generation of waste is essentially reduced. Producing and using slag products are described as BAT-technology and it is an essential environmental aspect. Outokumpu Tornio Works produces 320 000 t FeCr-slag/a. This paper deals with formation of slag in smelting process, its chemical composition, physical and structural characteristics, utilization and product specifications as well as environmental aspects. The slag products are standardized and CE marked. Additionally the role of slag in smelting and alloy recovery is reviewed in this paper.

"A well-maintained tap-hole channel is important in order to achieve good and stable furnace operation over time. A worn or short tap-hole channel can lead to more violent flow, significantly increasing the fume emissions during tapping and leading to more metal being mixed with and lost to the slag. Over time, a worn tapping channel might cause side channels and damage to the lining around the tap-hole area. This can result in a burn-through which is a considerable safety risk and will cause significant production losses. At Eramet Norway Porsgrunn, tap-hole maintenance has been done regularly with electrode paste for over three decades with good results. This article summarizes some of the experiences obtained from this practice on a 33 MW SiMn furnace, as well as a change to a coal tar pitch-free binder. IntroductionA well-maintained tap-hole channel is important in order to achieve good and stable furnace operation over time. Metal and slag are regularly tapped from the furnace and may cause a lot of wear on the tapping channel, increasing the risk of lining damage and ultimately leading to a burn-through. On furnace 10 at Eramet Norway Porsgrunn, the tap-hole area is the part of the lining that has been by far the most prone to burn-through since the startup of the furnace.Experience shows that almost all lining problems have started with burn-through in the tap-hole area or in close proximity to the tap-hole. During tap-hole repairs, side channels with metal and slag have also been observed emanating from the main tapping channel. In addition, a shorter tapping channel will cause more violent flow. This can lead to more metal droplets being entrained in the slag, and increase the risk of the furnace not being closed properly at the end of the tap.As a burn-through is a considerable safety risk, and also causes significant production losses, systematic work has been performed over the years to maintain the tapping channel in order to prevent burn-through."

Automation of the conventional grinding circuits of Palabora Mining Company (PMC) required that adequate instrumentation and a control system had to be put in place, after which extensive testing had to be done to evaluate different grinding control strategies. The objective was either to optimize the particle size from the grinding circuit, or to increase milling circuit throughput while maintaining particle size at existing levels. Prior to automation of the process as described below the circuits were controlled manually. No on-line information on cyclone feed densities, cyclone feed flow or cyclone overflow particle size was available. This type of control relied heavily on interpretation of the process parameters by the operator and on his ability to make informed decisions on what the set points should be. An integral component of the automation process was the installation of a SCADA package (SysCad SDX) for implementing the on-line control strategy. A self-correcting model for prediction of cyclone particle size was developed and implemented on the SDX. The model is calibrated using values from the particle size analysers while they are operational. If the particle size analysers choke or fail for any reason, the model continues to provide a good estimate of the particle size. This technique ensures that a continuous particle size indication is available compared to the intermittent reading from the instrument. The continuous signal allows particle size to be used as a process variable for control purposes. A strategy was developed and implemented which allows for the production of a controlled grind size from the conventional milling circuit to the flotation circuit. The grinding control strategy allows for the control of particle size from the individual cyclone overflows. This strategy allows the operator of the process to increase or decrease production rate by specifying a coarser or finer grind size required for flotation.

In light of the apparent productivity benefits provided by mechanised stoping, Impala Platinum Limited commissioned a study to investigate its possible implementation for mining reserves located 1200 – 1700 m below surface. This paper records the methodology employed for designing a support system for such mechanised mining, as well as initial conclusions of the work done. Preliminary results show the concept to be technically feasible; work was however stopped due to financial non-viability. En considération des bénéfices de production apparents que donne l’exploitation par gradins mécanisée, Impala Platinum Limited a commissionné une étude visant à examiner sa mise en œuvre possible pour des réserves minières situées à 1200 – 1700 m sous la surface. L’étude présente rapporte la méthodologie employée pour créer un système de support pour ce genre d’exploitation mécanisée, ainsi que les conclusions initiales de ce projet. Les résultats préliminaires montrent que le concept est techniquement faisable ; cependant le travail fut arrêté à cause de difficultés de rentabilité. Dieses Elaborat dokumentiert sowohl die Methode die für das Design eines Unterstützungssystems für eine derartige mechanisierte Abbauweise angewendet wird als auch die anfänglichen Konklusionen der geleisteten Arbeit. Anfängliche Resultate zeigen daß das Konzept technisch durchführbar ist; die Arbeit wurde jedoch wegen der finanziellen Nichtrealisierarkeit gestoppt.

The effect of grinding media performance on milling and operational behaviour was demonstrated under different selected conditions of calcium carbonate slurry milling. A variety of grinding media materials and bead sizes, along with two different stirrer tip speeds, were used in the grinding process to generate a particle size reduction of the calcium carbonate (CaCO3). To determine the optimum milling parameters the collected test data were used to calculate and evaluate specific energy as well as stress intensity under different milling conditions. The results of over 900 coal strength tests done during the period 1993?1994 for the SIMRAC project COL021A were re-analysed with a view to find a method to delineate areas or seams that can be grouped together for analyses of coal strength and strength decay characteristics. It was confirmed that the strength of a coal specimen increases linearly with increasing diameter-to-length ratio and decreases exponentially with increasing size of specimen. However, by extrapolation of the data, it was shown that beyond a diameter of approximately 2 m, the size effect is insignificant. For larger specimens, the diameter-to-length ratio (referred to as the width-to-height ratio for full scale mine pillars) alone continues to influence the strength. The slope of the linear strength vs. diameter-to-length ratio relationship is independent of the size of the specimen and is not unique for coals from different mines. However, the intercept of that relationship is unique and is a function of specimen size. This offers a previously unknown method to distinguish between the coals from different mining areas and coal seams. Current mine production planning, scheduling, and allocation of resources are based on mathematical programming models. In practice, the optimized solution cannot be attained without examining all possible combinations and permutations of the extraction sequence. Operations research methods have limited applications in large-scale surface mining operations because the number of variables becomes too large. The primary objective of this study is to develop and implement a hybrid simulation framework for the open pit scheduling problem. The paper investigates the dynamics of open pit geometry and the subsequent material movement as a continuous system described by time-dependent differential equations. The continuous open pit simulator (COPS) implemented in MATLAB, based on modified elliptical frustum is used to model the evolution of open pit geometry in time and space. Discrete open pit simulator (DOPS) mimics the periodic expansion of the open pit layouts. Function approximation of the discrete simulated push-backs provides the means to convert the set of partial differential equations (PDEs), capturing the dynamics of open pit layouts, to a system of ordinary differential equations (ODEs). Numerical integration with the Runge-Kutta scheme yields the trajectory of the pit geometry over time with the respective volume of materials and the net present value (NPV) of the mining operation. A case study of an iron ore mine with 114 000 blocks was carried out to verify and validate the model. The optimized pit limit was designed using Lerchs-Grossman?s algorithm. The best-case annual schedule, generated by the shells node in Whittle Four-X yielded an NPV of $449 million over a 21-year mine life at a discount rate of 10% per annum. DOPS best scenario out of 2 500 simulation iterations resulted in an NPV of $443 million and COPS yielded an NPV of $440 million over the same time span. The hybrid simulation model is the basis for future research using reinforcement learning based on goal-directed intelligent agents.

ABSTRACT: The paper describes the characterisation studies of Tectonised Clay Shales at laboratory and in situ scale. The interest relates to tunnelling under squeezing and swelling conditions, in Italy, along the Apennines. The results of monitoring during full face excavation are presented in conjunction with numerical modelling. RESUME: Cet article présente la caractérisation, à l'échelle du laboratoire et in situ, des Argiles Chaotiques. L'attention est portée sur le creusement, dans ces milieux gonflants, des tunnels, dans les zones montagneuses des Appennini, en Italie. Enfin, on présentera les résultats de la modélisation numérique et la comparaison de ces derniers avec les mesures effectuées in situ. KURZFASSUNG: Die Arbeit beschreibt die Charakterisierungsstudien von tektonisierten Schiefertonen, sowohl im Labor als auch vor Ort. Das Interesse gilt dem Tunnelbau unter Quetsch- und Schwellbedingungen in Italien entlang der Apenninen. Die Überwachungsergebnisse des ganzflächigen Ausbruchs werden mit numerischen Modellen präsentiert.

Paper written on project work carried out in partial fulfilment of Bachelor of Engineering-Mining Venetia Mine, an open-pit diamond mining operation in the Limpopo Province of South Africa, currently has a mixed haul truck fleet consisting of Caterpillar 785B and C; 789C; modified 793D and 793D. Even in an ideal situation these trucks have different cycle times, which causes queuing at the loading area and their different speeds cause bunching on the ramps, leading to higher overall cycle times and lower productivity. This problem was identified but the root causes of the problem were not investigated and quantified. A time and motion study on the haul trucks was thus undertaken to measure actual cycle times and compare them to ideal cycle times as well as to observe any reasons for deviations. Ideal cycle times are partly evaluated on the basis of simulation and partly from production optimization expert input. Several areas that affect production were identified and these include: haul road conditions, the control room, dispatching programme and dispatching data management, as well as truck-shovel matching. The investigation was important in establishing control parameters for haul fleet operation since time spent queuing is production time lost, which defers waste tonnes to later in the life of mine, thus decreasing the tempo at which kimberlite is exposed.

Recent developments in circulating fluidized bed (CFB) once-through supercritical technology (OTSC) have enabled this technology to be offered as a utility-scale alternative competing head-to-head with pulverized fuel (PF) OTSC offerings. One clear example is the CFB supercritical unit at the Lagisza Power Plant in Poland, owned by PoludniowyKoncernEnergetyczny SA (PKE). This unit has now been in commercial operation for three full years, exhibiting very good performance, and has validated Foster Wheeler's performance model at this utility scale as well as for units in the 600 MWe and 800 MWe size ranges offering net efficiency of -43 per cent (LHV basis). This operating unit has also proven the use of the world's first FW/BENSONTM vertical-tube OTSC low mass flux technology. Since the Lagisza original international tender specified OTSC PF technology, it is important to note that the alternative selection of CFB OTSC technology over conventional PF technology is of historic significance, not only for the validation of the CFB supercritical platform as a viable alternative to conventional PF technology, but it also positions the CFB OTSC with fuel flexibility for offering of sizes up to and including 800 MWe units. This paper explores the differences between CFB OTSC technology and standard PF OTSC in utility power generation. Selection criteria, fuel burning range in both technologies, and other selection drivers are discussed. Economic analysis of both technologies, based on existing cases, is also provided. Also discussed are the technical advantages and uses of each technology. Foster Wheeler has recently been awarded a contract for four units of CFB OTSC technology, which utilizes a 2 on 1 configuration of two 550 MWe CFB OTSC boilers on two single 1000 MWe turbines. Essentially this provides a fuel-flexible low-emissions alternative to a 2 x 1000 MWe solid fuel power block.

[ ] South Africa, by a wide margin, is blessed with the largest known world reserves of platinum. The optimal use of these resources for the benefit of all South Africa?s peoples is a goal shared by industry, government and all South Africans. The challenge is to grow the industry in accordance with demand growth and thus to manage a long-term stable growth pattern for PGM usage world-wide. Amplats and the South African producers are well able to meet this challenge [ ] South Africa plays a critical role in the provision of Platinum Group Metals for world markets. In fact no other country has the productive capacity nor the geological reserves to supply the world?s platinum needs. The world required some 5 million ounces of Platinum in 1997 and South Africa supplied a full 74% thereof. The second major supplier, Russia provided a further 18% of world demand, primarily as a by-product of nickel production. Amplats satisfied about 37% of total world demand followed by Impala 20% and Lonhro at 12%.

Changes in reductant and energy inputs which are required to adjust the slag composition in an ilmenite smelter to a higher or lower FeO content are calculated. The calculated changes are based on the assumption that solidification equilibrium with the freeze lining constrains the slag composition to follow a eutectic groove in the TiO2-FeO-TiO1.5phase diagram. Calculated equilibrium conditions along the eutectic groove are presented, and form the basis of the calculations. The inputs of energy and carbon need to deviate strongly from the steady-state values to adjust the slag composition. The inputs required at any given time depend on the desired rate of change of the slag composition, and the current slag composition. The steady-state relationship of a change in energy input of 5 kWh corresponding to a 1 kg change in carbon input also holds for the changed inputs during transient changes in FeO content. ?Longhole blast hole drilling? techniques are not new to the mining industry. Appropriate mechanization and improvement of the techniques and application has evolved from the industry requirements. Today safety and economics play a larger role in the excavation of ore passes, ventilation passes, and relatively small inclined excavations in the conventional gold and platinum industry. The application of dropraise drilling from the top or from the bottom is discussed investigating the current techniques available, DTH application, advantages and disadvantages, limiting factors, typical layouts and proposals, the drop raising technique and future applications. Similarly, the application of longhole blast hole drilling in tabular and massive orebodies is discussed with emphasis on the DTH application, advantages and disadvantages, limiting factors, typical layouts, the long hole stoping techniques and future applications.

Many factors affect the overall performance of a gravity circuit beyond that of the primary gravity recovery device. It is critical to examine the gravity circuit in its entirety in order to determine the dominant operating variables that affect overall performance. Knelson has developed a mathematical model which has been used to assist in the design of gravity circuits, and in particular, in making accurate predictions of plant scale gravity recovery. More recently, inclusion of recovery by particle size class and additional data from various mine sites and research studies has made the model more robust. The model is now able to predict GRG (gravity-recoverable-gold) recoveries using various devices such as centrifugal concentrators, shaking tables, jigs and flash-flotation within the grinding circuit. The benefits derived by these recent advancements in modeling capability are two-fold; the first is as a tool to assist in circuit design and correct equipment selection and the second is as an analytical tool to help to evaluate and enhance the performance of existing gravity circuits.

High-pressure waterjet technology is proposed as an alternative tool for selective underground mining of high-grade ore sections in stratiform orebodies showing a preferred ?bottom? or ?top? enrichment such as the Witwatersrand reefs and the Bushveld Complex platiniferous reefs. This technique, utilizing known mining technology together with more advanced machinery and additives as used in industrial and cleaning applications, may lead to an increased life-of-mine (LOM) for mining operations. A series of experiments was successfully carried out in a laboratory on Witwatersrand quartzite material, indicating acceptable cutting performance. Mining volumes by selectively cutting of reef portions are considered to be comparable to traditional drilling and blasting. Economic advantages of waterjet mining include energy savings due to the lower quantity of gangue rock to be hoisted to surface, as well as savings by a decrease in the usage of blasting materials. Capital expenditure of waterjet cutting, if applied on a broad scale, could be lower in the long term than that of conventional drilling and blasting methods. Mining by the application of high-pressure waterjet technology could become a competitive ?green technology? improving the economics and safety of labour-intensive mining operations. This paper suggests that waterjet cutting at an industrial scale can become a routine hard-rock mining technique in the future. Merensky Reef is mined extensively within the Bushveld Complex. In previously mined-out areas on the Merensky Reef horizon there are pillars, potholes and remnants that have not been mined. These unmined blocks of ground on the Merensky Reef horizon can influence the mining of the underlying UG2 Reef. The extent of the influence will depend on the size of unmined ground and the middling between the two reef horizons. This paper quantifies the influence of partially extracted Merensky Reef on mining of the UG2 Reef, and aims to provide recommendations for mining strategies, as well as regional and local support to achieve efficient and safe extraction of the UG2 Reef, for various middlings beneath the Merensky Reef horizon. In some cases it was found that relatively shallow UG2 Reef mining could encounter conditions similar to those experienced in deep and ultra-deep mining environments.

This paper deals with the selection of alternative accesses to a podiform chromite orebody in Turkey. The most important alternatives studied in a related project have been stated as a new vertical shaft and a ramp system. The comparison of these alternatives have been carried out on the basis of total investment costs, ore transport unit cost and net present value (NPV) of overall project for various depth. The results show that up to the depth of 700 m, the total investment cost and NPV favours the ramp access while unit ore transport cost make the shaft access preferable.

Personnel management has undergone a remarkable change over the course of the past ten years. Personnel departments have played an increasingly important role, which today requires highly trained people and cannot be adequately served by the lesser qualified officials of yesteryear. Changes in the mining industry that stem from the demand for skilled labour to keep pace with technological developments and the mechanization of mines today demand that emphasis should be placed on the maximum utilization of manpower. Maximum utilization of manpower calls for more scientific and effective methods of recruiting, selecting, training, and placing workers so as to offer them the best opportunities for development and promotion, which naturally ensure a minimum labour turnover and eliminate labour unrest. This can be achieved only if well-qualified and properly trained personnel administrators are prepared to accept the challenge and apply themselves purposefully by assisting line mangement with the attainment of the company's corporate objectives.
