Kaolin is one of the most important ingredients in porcelain manufacturing. Its main phase is clay mineral containing aluminum hydrosilicate, namely kaolinite. Beside kaolinite it also contains quartz, illite and feldspars, which impair its applicability. Kaolin is a non-reactive material, but metakaolin can be produced by heat treatment (calcination) of kaolin, which is also used by the cement and concrete industry due to its latent hydraulic (pozzolanic) properties. Beside thermal activation, reactive materials can also be produced by mechanochemical activation in general. This paper deals with the mechanochemical activation of kaolin. The raw material was classified into various size fractions, then ground in a batch stirred media mill under varying circumstances (residence time, circumferential velocity). After grinding, the structural changes of the products were investigated by X-ray diffractometry (XRD) and Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR). In addition, the particle size distribution of the ground material was determined by laser scattering. As a result of the grinding experiments and analytical measurements of the products, it can be clearly seen that reactivity of kaolin can be improved significantly by mechanical activation in a stirred media mill, but due to its high energy density the circumstances were optimised carefully to avoid aggregation. A sampling campaign carried out on the lead flotation circuit at Lakan lead-zinc processing plant demonstrated that the Pb recovery was only about 68-69%. Characterization of the Pb flotation tailing showed that 61.4% of the Pb is in the –37 μm size fraction, which is difficult to recover by flotation. Batch flotation experiments were carried out on a plant sample of the lead flotation feed and high-intensity conditioning (HIC) was used to improve flotation recovery. The results showed that increasing the collector conditioning time from 1 to 3 minutes significantly increases the Pb recovery from 42.5% to 57.3%. Further increases in conditioning time to 5 to 7 minutes decreased the Pb recovery. With a collector conditioning time of more than 3 minutes, due to the surface cleaning effect, increasing collector and frother dosage improved the flotation selectivity and recovery, even at higher collector dosages. The Pb recovery increased from 69.1% to 79.8% with increasing impeller speed from 600 to 1250 r/min. HIC increases the flotation kinetics and greatly improves the flotation recovery and concentrate grade.

To optimize the flotation of Ca-minerals, their separation contrasts were investigated by coupling experimental and theoretical techniques. We showed that they mainly rely on structural properties such as the Ca-Ca distance on their exposed surfaces but also on the ability to control the intermolecular interactions. An optimized composition of the carboxylic collector by calculating the collector-mineral and the intermolecular interactions was developed. Blending the saturated acids and non-ionic molecules with a fatty acid collector significantly increases the flotation selectivity between scheelite (CaWO4) and fluorite (CaF2). The theoretical results were validated by experimentally improving the separation contrast between Ca-minerals. After the tests of several depressants and collectors, the best depression of gangue Ca-minerals (fluorite, apatite and vezuvianite) was found by combining sodium silicate and sodium carbonate. The statistical methods described in the previous chapter permit the estimation of the average value p of a deposit, and the calculation of confidence limits for this value. They are based on the assumption of independence of sample values. As soon as a reasonable number of samples has been obtained from a deposit, local valuation, or estimation of blocks of ore within the mineral deposit, becomes necessary. The assumption of independence of values must then be rejected. Local valuation is possible only if there is a relationship between the value of a sample and the value of the surrounding ore, provided this relationship is a function of the position of the sample with respect to the blocks of ore to be valued. Whichever method is used for the valuation of a block of ore, the following assumptions are always made: ? The values of samples located near or inside the block are related to the value of the block. ? The values of the samples located closest to the block are most closely related to the value of the block. These assumptions will hold true only if the following assumption can also be made: ? There exists a relationship between sample values which is a function of the distance between samples. We are saying that the value x (z) of a sample centred at a point z has properties which are functions of this point. A certain spatial structure exists in the sample distribution. We are therefore dealing with a regionalized phenomenon, and we must treat x (z) as a regionalized variable. This can be done statistically by means of a model chosen to represent the spatial structure of the phenomenon. We shall see that the relationship between block values and sample values can be deduced from the relationship between sample values, and all local valuation problems can be solved using the statistical model obtained from the analysis of the sample values. It is important to realize that this statistical model is obtained by analysing the properties of known sample values, and will be used for the estimation of unknown block values. Such a statistical inference is valid only if the model developed represents the properties of both the sampled section of the ore body and the section to be valued: some stationarity conditions must be satisfied, and the model with the least restrictive conditions is preferred. In the following chapters, the most important models used in spatial geostatistics are presented. The models which can be used when there is no significant drift (trends) in values are described in Chapters 3-1 1. These models can also be used to solve some specific valuation problems when a linear drift is present. A general study of the more difficult problem of analysis of an ore body whose values present a drift is described in Chapter 12. Note that the area considered for local valuation of a block of ore is often small enough for any drift which might be present to be ignored.

In research various desorbents were used to desorb the following rare-earth metals from Purosorb 140 cation exchanger, i.e. ammonium chloride; ammonium sulfate; a mixture of nitric acid and ammonium nitrate; a mixture of hydrochloric acid and ammonium chloride; a mixture of sulfuric acid and ammonium sulfate. It was established that a solution containing 30 g/dm3 of H2SO4 + 300 g/dm3 of (NH4) 2SO4 is the most optimal desorbing solution to desorb REMs from macroporous Purosorb 140 cation exchanger impregnated with rare-earth metals from industrial dihydrate wet-process phosphoric acid. It was established that the residual REM content in the cation exchanger decreased from 0.89 to 0.10 wt. % with an increase in the ammonium sulfate concentration from 10 to 400 g/dm3. Technological desorption regimes for rare-earth metals from cation exchanger were developed. The optimal conditions were determined to desorb rare-earth metals from the Purosorb 140 cation exchanger, particularly temperature 25°C; L:S ratio = (0.8 ÷ 1.1):1; duration = 1.0-1.5 hours. "SynopsisThis study proposes a methodology for evaluating the risk of coal bumps in multiple-seam longwall mining. Both the stress field and the total energy release (TER) during retreat were evaluated in the specified case involving multiple-seam mining using the LaModel program. The results of numerical simulations indicated that both the peak vertical stresses on the panel edges and the peak TERs in the outby longwalls increased significantly as the horizontal offsets were reduced from 60 m to zero. With the comprehensive consideration of the stress field and TERs, a conservative offset of 60 m was ultimately adopted when developing the gateroads of the lower panel in the field. The field measurements indicated that coal bumps were avoided completely by employing the proposed design, and the maximum roof-to-floor and rib-to-rib convergences of the tailgate during retreat were only 360 mm and 576 mm, respectively.IntroductionCoal bumps – sudden, violent bursts of coal – pose a serious threat to the safe excavation of coal. Their occurrence depends on the properties of the surrounding rocks, stress field, and dynamic disturbance. The complexity of the mechanism of coal bumps is further enhanced in multiple-seam mining due to seam interaction. Multiple-seam mining is most frequently found in the coalfields in eastern China, such as Xuzhou, Xinwen, Zaozhuang, and Huainan. In the past, due to issues of availability, economics, and ignorance of the potential risk in multipleseam mining, coal seams in such conditions were mined without proper planning to account for seam interaction. Fortunately, studies published over the past three decades have raised awareness of the problems associated with multiple-seam mining, and indicated that the ground control issues induced by multiple-seam mining can be avoided and/or minimized with proper planning.A number of technical studies pertaining to the design of multiple-seam mines have been published. These studies can be divided into two groups based on their methodologies of design: empirical (Chekan and Listak, 1993; Haycocks and Zhou, 1990, Matetic et al.; 1987a, 1987b) and numerical approaches (Li et al., 2000; Maleki, 2007; Mark, 2007; Peng, 2007; Zipf, 2005). The majority of the extant studies on the interaction mechanisms in multiple-seam mining have focused on the load transfer during operation, resulting in the proposal of the pressure bulb theory (Forrest et al., 1987; Haycocks and Karmis, 1983; Peng, 2008; Peng and Chandra, 1980) and pressure arch theory (Holland, 1973; Oram and Ponder, 1997) to guide multiple-seam mine design. However, neither, of these theories can be used to evaluate the potential for coal bumps."

De Beers' Finsch Mine is situated in the Northern Cape province, 170 km northwest of Kimberley. The concentrator facility, designed and constructed by Bateman Engineering, was commissioned in 1967 and upgraded in 1979 using diamond liberation and extraction technology available at the time of design. Since then significant advances in diamond processing and technology have been made and these -have been incorporated into the new main treatment plant and recovery plant flowsheets, making diamond liberation and recovery from the Pre-1979 dumps a viable economic option at Finsch."

This research paper introduces a novel passive method for ocean mining using an electricpowered robotic subsea dredging crawler designed to operate in various subsea conditions, including unstructured and rough terrain. The electric-powered robotic subsea dredging crawler is equipped with two driving tracks and features a complex assembly of tank tread chain link, tank tread idler wheels, tank tread sprockets, bronze bushings, motor hub, motor mount, and a 12-volt direct current motor. To evaluate the performance of the electric-powered robotic subsea dredging crawler, it was compared with existing ocean hydraulic exploration crawlers, such as MK3 ROST, in terms of drive performance on an inclined ramp with five angles of inclination (0°, 15°, 20°, 25°, 30°). The experiment aimed to determine the maximum velocity, torque, and efficiency of the crawler at different angles of inclination. The collected data were analysed and plotted using Python, and the effect of the electric-powered robotic subsea dredging crawler’s weight on its driving performance was also considered. The results of this study demonstrate a quadratic relationship between driving performance and inclination angle, which can be used to optimise the electric-powered robotic subsea dredging crawler’s performance for future ocean mining robot drive applications.

We propose a layout design for the UG2 Reef where weak geological alteration layers are present. The collapse of the Everest platinum mine in South Africa indicated that these layers substantially weaken the pillars. The popular Hedley and Grant pillar strength formula cannot be used where these alteration layers are present. Underground investigations at Everest mine and numerical modelling of the layout were conducted using the TEXAN code and a limit equilibrium model. Simulations of a collapsed area and an intact area allowed for a preliminary calibration of the model. This was subsequently used to explore modified layouts for these ground conditions. An alternative is to compartmentalize the blocks of ore using barrier pillars. The numerical modelling predicted that the barrier pillars appear to remain stable even in the case of large-scale collapses, provided their width exceeds 25 m. Main access routes into the mine can be protected by a double row of pillars at least 15 m wide to provide a safe travelling way. As a cautionary note, these conclusions are based on the model calibration and this needs to be refined in future. Calibration of the limit equilibrium model remains a challenge owing to the large number of parameters involved.

"The model described is a design and economic planning tool for analyzing surface mineral deposits. Mineralization, topography, costs and significant geologic features are input to the model. The results are:(i) final pit limits yielding the maximum total profit,(ii) annual cut-off grades and plant sizing yielding the maximum present value, and(iii) annual maps of the pit and annual production statistics for the mine, concentrator and smelter.Additionally, summaries are printed of the block mining sequence and cash flow. A special feature is an option to include dump-leaching operations. Stockpiling of material can also be simulated by the model. The model is built around theories of dynamic cut-off grades and a pit design algorithm. The dynamic cut-off grades maximize present value by examination of all economic and physical constraints for the optimum combination. The pit design algorithm is a set of rules formulated to find the maximum value from a special graph. The graph is different from graphs of analytical geometry, being made up of points and arrows connecting some of the points. These graph elements describe the relationship between any point in the deposit and the material which must be mined to get at that point. The model was designed to bring together the interdependent theories of economics, pit design and production scheduling."

Despite the four-decade study on ultrasound’s (US) impact on mineral’s floatabilities, there is still not clarity regarding its role in mineral surface wettability. For this purpose, the present investigation endeavours ……the hydrophobicity and floatability characteristics of a chalcopyrite-pyrite-quartz (Cp- Py-Qtz) system in the presence and absence of an ultrasonic pre-treatment. The ultrasonic process was carried out by a sonopuls at a constant frequency of 20 kHz with an adjustable power level from 30 to 200 W. Initially, the impact of sonication time (15, 30, 45, 60 and 90 s as well as 10, 20 and 30 min) and power magnitude (30, 60, 90, 120 and 180 W) were evaluated while the dissolved oxygen, temperature, conductivity and pH were also monitored. Collector-less micro-flotation tests were carried out on the non-pre-treated and the US pre-treated samples at 60 W and 15 s. The samples’ hydrophobicities were determined by the drop shape analysis approach. The dissolved-oxygen level was varied using a mini bench pressurised water reactor to study the effect of O2(aq) concentration on the chalcopyrite and pyrite wettability characteristics. The results showed that the minerals’ hydrophilicities were relatively more sensitive to the sonication’s time than its power that resulted in reducing all three minerals’ hydrophobicities. In addition, it was found that the dissolved-oxygen content and creation of sub-micron sized bubbles led to an improvement on chalcopyrite and pyrite hydrophobicities. Finally, we proved that the Cp’s floatability increased and Qtz’s recovery reduced while being subjected to the ultrasonic irradiation (15 s at 60 W); however, Py’s recovery remained constant. This conclusion confirmed the possibility of a selective separation in ultrasound-assisted copper ore flotation. We recommend that further advanced investigations be conducted, using an X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and atomic force microscopy (AFM) to thoroughly understand the surface modifications induced by the ultrasonication

"Lump coals are currently employed to replace part of coke in the COREX melter-gasifier for ironmaking. In order to optimize the process, the pyrolysis kinetics of Datong coal used in the COREX process was studied. A sectioning method is proposed to overcome certain shortcomings of traditional methods for studying the pyrolysis of coal. Based on the sectioning method and the characteristics of the coal pyrolysis process, the temperature range was divided into three intervals. In the first, the adsorbed gas and water of crystallization were removed; in the second, the coal was transformed into semi-coke; and finally, the semi-coke was further coked. Three models of reaction were then established to study the different stages of the pyrolysis process: an interfacial chemical reaction model, a random pore model, and internal diffusion with shrinking volume. The results showed that the experimental data fitted the models well, with all correlation coefficients (r2) exceeding 0.97. Finally, the mechanisms of reaction and kinetic parameters for each temperature range were derived, which laid a necessary foundation for optimizing the usage of non-coking coal in the COREX process. IntroductionIn view of environmental concerns and the shortage of good-quality coking coal, the COREX process was designed as a new ironmaking technology, attracting wide attention (Fang et al., 2005). In this process, lump coal and a small quantity of coke are directly charged into the melter-gasifier, where a high-quality reducing gas is generated for the reduction of the iron ore (Kumar et al., 2009). In contrast to the conventional blast furnace (BF) process, non-coking lump coal is used as the reducing agent and as the energy source, and the iron charge consists of lump ore and/or pellets, which results in the elimination of the coke oven and sintering plant as well as a decrease in investment (Kumar et al., 2009; Liu et al., 2012).Although the COREX process has made great progress, in current production practice the energy consumption greatly exceeds that of the BF, and it requires a certain amount of coke to maintain permeability of the semi-coke bed (Wang et al., 2008). In addition, the process consumes a lot of good-quality lump ore and lump coal. The pyrolysis of coal is the first step in most coal conversion processes, such as carbonization, gasification, and combustion (Aboyade et al., 2013). The reaction behaviour of lump coals in the COREX melter-gasifier is crucial, as it determines energy utilization and gas composition, as well as the metallurgical properties and particle size of the semi-coke produced (Prachethan et al., 2011; Zhang et al., 2014). In order to optimize the process and improve its competitiveness, the pyrolysis kinetics of Datong coal used in Baosteel’s COREX C-3000 facility was studied."

The selection of an underground mining method stems from a multivariate analysis that considers geomechanical, geological, economic, and operational parameters. Even after identifying the most compatible method, there is no assurance that the mining company will achieve the best performance. The geological complexity of some deposits requires adaptations of methods described in the literature to obtain more selectivity and reduce mining waste. There are some studies on geometry of underground structures, but a methodology that describes an adaptation of a room-and-pillar mining method for ore bodies with down-dip varying from 20° to 25° is novel. The present work aimed to reduce dilution by adapting the traditional room-and-pillar mining method (TRP) to inclined ore bodies. This new method is entitled short-hole room-and-pillar (SHRP). The equations that measure the dilution are defined according to the geometry of stopes and openings. The results comprise comparative analyses of the operational and planned dilutions to measure the performance of the SHRP method. The average operating dilution of the SHRP method was more than five times lower than the planned dilution according to the TRP method. Low operational dilution indicates high selectivity of the method and its potential to reduce underground mining tailings.

Sowry for his successful steering of the Branch during its period of inauguration. The West Wits Line first began yielding gold in the mid-1930s and is among South Africa's leading gold-producing areas. Gold mining operations are carried out amidst the occurrence of seismic events which cause both damage to underground excavations and injury and loss of life to production personnel. The feasibility of establishing a system to minotor the seismicity on all the Gold Fields mines was investigated during the early 1980s. This led to the establishment of a centralized seismic network in 1981. The system was structured around three major objectives. It uses Perkin Elmer (now Concurrent Computer Corporation) 16 and 32 bit mini-computers. The hardware in use at both the central and remote sites is outlined, giving a good insight into the role of computers in the system. The system software reveals the fast flow of data through the network; it can be divided into three categories: (1) data logging and transmission - remote sites, (2) data capture and communications - central site, (3) applications and research - central site. Several examples are given which show how the system is measuring up to its objectives. These case studies also indicate how the computers are effective in representing the seismic data collected. It is concluded that the use of computers enables the pin-pointing of seismic events on the West Wits Line within about 3 -4 minutes of their occurrence. The choice of hardware is largely dependent on the objectives of system, and the Gold Fields Network has chosen mini-computers because of the speed of communication and the large amount of data and storage required for research applications.

Petrographic analyses of coal rank and maceral-group composition are widely used in the characterization of coal. This paper describes the use of an image analyser (IBAS Kontron) for fuly automated measurements of the rank and maceral groups of seam coals. The rank is then derived from reflectance histograms, or 'fingerprints', of coal reflectance distributions (being expressed as the mean random reflectance of vitrinite). The volume proportions of the maceral groups are calculated from the histograms. The results obtained with the IBAS were generally in agreement with those obtained by conventional methods of reflectance measurement and point-count analysis. However, the results were inconsistent for coals with a bimodal character or a wide V-class distribution. The rank of the analysed coals ranged from 0,50 to 1,10 per cent mean random reflectance. The lowest reflectance that can be analysed with the IBAS is 0,4 per cent. The speed, objectiveness, and repeatability of this technique make it exceptionally suitable for use in the quality control of large numbers of samples.

Nanotechnology can provide solutions to many of the world?s socio-economic challenges. The application of nanomaterials for water treatment and analysis, point-of-care diagnostics and targeted drug delivery systems or devices could improve the quality of life for people in developing countries. Gold colloids have a long history (dating back to the 4th century AD) and are particularly well known for their aesthetic appeal and their therapeutic properties. Since Faraday published a report on the synthesis and properties of colloidal gold in 1857, a reasonable insight into the nature of gold sols (nucleation, growth and kinetics of coagulation) has been developed. Considerable attention has been drawn during the past few decades to the development and optimization of methods for the preparation of gold nanoparticles. In nanoscience and nanotechnology today, gold nanomaterials appear to be the most widely used material by both academics and industrialists. This is due to the extraordinary properties of gold nanoparticles (e.g. optical, catalytic, and magnetic?they are also known to act as strong Raman enhancers and may also amplify fluorescence under certain circumstances). Mintek, through Project AuTEK and the DST/Mintek Nanotechnology Innovation Centre (NIC), has been at the forefront of the development of new industrial uses for gold. Mintek?s gold nanotechnology programme focuses on the development of gold-based nanostructured materials and their applications in health, water and other related areas. While few projects use gold nanoparticles for water treatment and analysis, Mintek?s gold nanoparticles are widely used in the health sector. For example, gold nanoparticles are engineered and produced in large quantities as systems for targeted drug delivery. They are also used as tools for advanced rapid diagnostic tests. Both optical and electrochemical rapid diagnostic methods are developed for the human and animal health sectors for point-of-care testing. This paper gives a brief introduction and overview of gold nanotechnology, and desrcibes the development of some of Mintek?s gold nanoparticle targeted drug delivery systems and lateral flow point of care prototype devices.

The above paper gives a fair amount of information and is a useful addition to the literature on a subject of growing importance. I believe that more experimental results could have been given, together with more details of the modifications made to the plant that enabled it to operate with the success mentioned in the paper. One important omission is a definition of the word fines. As pointed out elsewhere!, this word is used very loosely.
