Careful monitoring of the position of the cave front is essential for well-managed block cave mining. Seismic monitoring systems yield 3-D information about the location of fracturing ahead of the cave. However, because the a seismic gap between cave surface and seismogenic zone is of unknown extent, the cluster of micro-seismicity can only yield an upper bound for the cave height. The large velocity contrast between the fractured rock in the aseismic gap and the broken loose material within the cave can be used by an inversion procedure to find a few simple geometric parameters (such as height of the top of the cave) if a simple 3-D shape?for example a paraboloid?is assumed for the cave. Ray-tracing must be used as the large velocity contrasts cause seismic waves to bend around the cave, but the inversion takes the form of a minimization problem in only a few dimensions and so the computational time is feasible. This technique has been successfully tested on realistic synthetic data.

Electrowinning is one of the nickel recovery processes from solutions obtained from the leaching of nickel sources. Every year significant amounts of nickel products are used in various industrial processes and daily life, such as catalysts or batteries, which are a valuable source of nickel for recovery. Nickel purity is also very important in the electrowinning process, because the amount of impurities in nickel such as sulphur, if greater than 100 ppm, make it unsuitable for use in catalysts and plating. Because sulfur is intrinsic to the sulphate electrowinning system, we needed to investigate parameters that can affect the quality and purity of nickel. In this regard, experiments were performed in static and circulating electrowinning processes. A monitoring and circulation system was designed and built to measure voltage, current and temperature as well as to circulate the solution in the system at a specified rate. It was then observed that nickel ion concentration, pH, using the circulation system and additives, were factors affecting the purity and quality of nickel, and in the best case the amount of sulphur in nickel was below 100 ppm. "Digital simulation can be used as an analytical tool to optimize the design of crushing plants without need for large-scale experimental programs.General mathematical description of a crushing operation permits the simulation of a crushing plant flowsheet under various operating conditions. The process model encompasses multistage open- and closed-circuit crushing of hard and soft rock. Crushing balances are analyzed in the light of crusher and screen performance and a comparison of different closed-circuit arrangements is made in terms of process and layout criteria.The simulation model allows comparison of process alternatives to be made in terms of equipment selection and capital and operating cost estimation. It thus provides the pertinent practical information to maximize plant efficiency, and to minimize expenditures in such items as equipment, structures, power consumption, and so on."

Dry deep screening is an important method of classifying moist fine mineral. The rigid-flexible coupled elastic screening technology can simultaneously solve the problem of traditional screen surface plugging and the low service life of a screen surface in the process of deep screening. In this paper, two kinds of rigid-flexible coupled elastic screen surfaces were introduced. The structural characteristics of a screen surface were studied. The mechanism of a rigid flexible coupled elastic screen surface to overcome hole blockage was revealed. Finally, 3 mm and 6 mm screening experiments were carried out. When the external moisture content was below 12.79% for the 6 mm dry screening experiment of elastic rod screen surface, the screening efficiency was above 81%. When the external moisture content was below 11.31% for the 3 mm dry screening experiment of elastic screen surface based on ball hitting, the screening efficiency was above 83%. Globally, the demand for mineral products is ever increasing. Extraction of these mineral resources results in the continuous production of a huge volume of waste material, including tailing dumps. The mass of tailings usually exceeds the actual resource and often contains hazardous contaminants. This study investigated the effects of tailings disposal on soil, water, and air quality in the Nampundwe area. Water, soil, and dust samples were collected from different locations in the surrounding communities. The constituents analysed in the samples included copper, cobalt, iron, sulfate, and silica. According to the results obtained, some seepages occurred from the tailings impoundment to the shallow aquifer in the area. However, the general water quality meets the Zambia Environmental Management Agency (ZEMA) statutory limits. Recorded concentrations of sulfate (1500 mg/l), copper (1.5 mg/l), cobalt (1.0 mg/l), iron (2.0 mg/l), and silica were between 0.003 mg/l and 705 mg/l, which is far below ZEMA’s statutory limit. Silica concentration was also evident in the air. The highest concentration recorded was 260 ppcc (particle per cubic centimeter) recorded in July 2019 from the northern direction of the tailings dam. The concentration was below the statutory limit of 350 ppcc. The topsoil from the northern part of the tailings recorded a silica dust concentration of 39.9 ppcc. Iron was evident in the underground soil with a concentration of 8.01 ppcc, cobalt 0.005 ppcc, copper 0.051 ppcc, while sulfate was recorded as 0.41 ppcc.

The mining industry, both here and internationally, is continually developing increasingly sophisticated software to compute mineral resource estimates, but these processes cannot compensate for a flawed geological interpretation of the geology of the economic commodity(s) concentrations. Quality assurance and quality control (QA/QC) is becoming increasingly common in association with the sampling and assaying practices within the industry. However, it is rare in the case of a geological interpretation associated with mineral resource estimation. Why? In the context of this paper, QA/QC relates to the use of statistical and graphical tools to show that the geological economic commodity concentrations have been appropriately domained. Domaining is essential to improve the chance of getting a mineral resource estimate right. Commodity value and acceptable concentration variation within a mineral resource can be ingredients that make mineral resource estimation difficult to get right. But it is possible to get it right a very high proportion of the time. It is more likely to occur when inappropriate data consolidation is minimised. In any case, inappropriate data consolidation is significantly reduced when the geological interpretation is strongly consistent with the data and it is demonstrable. To achieve quality global estimates of geological domain concentrations, it is essential that the geology of the prospect is understood sufficiently that the deposit is appropriately domained. Appropriate domaining occurs when sample populations are separated in such a way that only data in harmony with each other within the population contributes to the domain's concentration estimate. The paper will use four brief case studies to illustrate how QA/QC can be used to display data and validate the underpinning geological interpretation through its associated domaining to get it right when it comes to a mineral resource estimation.

Approximately 20% of current world copper cathode output is produced using a hydrometallurgical process route, generally referred to as the leach–solvent extraction–electrowinning flowsheet. Since its commercialization in the late 1960s, steady improvements in the performance and efficiency of the solvent-extraction reagents and equipment, combined with significant developments in leaching and electrowinning, have made an ever-widening range of ore types amenable to this technology. Following successful implementation on all major continents, a large proportion of growth in recent years derives from the re-emergence of copper solvent extraction in the Central African Copperbelt. This review provides a brief history of the development and evolution of copper solvent extractants and mixer-settler contactors, and the significance of the Copperbelt region in achieving commercialization and acceptance of the technology. The opportunities and challenges presented by the abundant high-grade oxide ores of the Copperbelt are contrasted with the processing of solutions derived from the low-grade mixed oxide–sulfide ore bodies that are prevalent in other geological regions. The current status of hydrometallurgical copper production in the African Copperbelt, within a global context, and a medium-term outlook for the technology are discussed.

India is devoid of coking coal resources, which is a vital raw material for coke making. As a result it has to import about 80% coking coal for steel making. Indian National Steel Policy, 2017 has envisaged crude steel production around 300 million tonnes Mt) by the year 2030-31 and forecasts coking coal demand of 161 Mtpa (million tonnes per annum). One way of improving the indigenous resources is to study the performance of existing washeries and to improve the clean coal recovery by adopting suitable technology. A study was carried out, mainly to focus on the fine coal circuit of an existing coking coal washery, to generate the desired quality of clean coal. The operating coking coal washery being studied is presently feeding coal from nine different sources with varying feed ash contents. The coal fines varied in ash content ranging from 19.5% - 43.6%. For treating the coal fines, the washery has operated a spiral for the past few years. Performance studies were carried out, and it was found that the spiral is not efficient in recovering the cleans. Detailed investigations were carried out on the coal fines using flotation techniques, and it was found that to achieve a low ash clean coal, the froth flotation is a much better beneficiation option than a spiral, The studies showed that the recovery of clean coal through a spiral is 67.7% at ash content of 27.0%, while flotation tests showed a recovery of 68.1% at 16.5% ash content. Zincor uses O2 enrichment (up to 26% O2 in the fluidizing air) to increase the processing rate of zinc concentrates in the fluidized bed roasters. The aim of this study is to determine whether O2 enrichment can be reduced by introducing micro-pelletized concentrate into the feed blend, while maintaining current roaster feed rates and calcine quality. It was found that, with a load of 20% micro-pellets introduced into the feed blend, that O2 enrichment could be reduced by 60%. It was determined that entrained particles spend on average between 0.46 hour and 2.44 hour in the roaster, compared to particles remaining between 3.93 hour and 4.00 hour in the bed overflow. This compares well with a radioactive tracer test performed by Spira. The required reaction time for micro-pellets was found to be less than the residence time inside a Zincor roaster. The result achieved indicated that the average particle residence time inside the roaster was increased successfully in order to compensate for the longer reaction time required to roast micro-pellets at lower levels of O2 in the fluidizing air.

This study investigated the effect of surface roughness on Schmidt rebound hardness (RL). Four different test surfaces of rock samples were studied: natural, ground, cut surfaces, and core samples. There was significant variability of standard deviation based on the RL on the natural surface, which indicated high roughness of the rock surface, whereas surface polishing caused a significant decrease in standard deviation. ISRM and ASTM methods were compared to estimate unconfined compressive strength (UCS) for different testing surfaces. RL obtained from the cut surface was found to be more reliable than those obtained from other testing surfaces for the prediction of UCS; however, regression and ANOVA analyses revealed that the ISRM method gave a more accurate UCS estimation of rocks with highly rough surfaces. It was also shown that RL values obtained from a cut surface were significantly higher than those obtained from core samples. Therefore, a comparison between RL values obtained from core samples and cut surfaces was made based on previous studies. This study statistically showed that estimated UCS values are not statistically significant if Schmidt rebound tests are not performed on similar surfaces. In addition, the mineral grain sizes of the studied rocks, different testing surfaces compared with those in literature, and standard deviation from RL are evaluated and discussed. The Schmidt hammer technique is a rapid, inexpensive, and straightforward method for estimating UCS for preliminary assessment; however, roughness of the surface should be eliminated if variations are shown in the surface rebound hardness.

This work evaluates the deformation behaviour, at warm working temperatures, of green particle-reinforced aluminium composites produced by powder blending in a high-energy ball mill. The work focuses on metal matrix composites (MMCs) based on the 2124-Al alloy, reinforced with 10 or 15 vol.% SiC and metal matrix nanocomposites (MMNCs) based on the 2124-Al alloy, reinforced with 5 or 10 vol.% Al2O3. Three batches for each powder were blended and powder properties such as particle size distribution (PSD) and shape were consistent after blending. It was observed that a more uniform distribution of the reinforcement phase in the aluminium alloy matrix was achieved in 2124-Al/Al2O3 than in 2124- Al/SiC composites. The powders (unreinforced 2124-Al and blended) were initially over-aged at 350°C for 2 hours to reverse any natural ageing that may have occurred prior to use. The over-ageing was incorporated to improve compressibility of the powders with the aim of achieving green compacts with higher integrity. Uniaxial compression tests performed at ambient temperature on a Gleeble® 3500 thermomechanical simulator were unsuccessful as the green compacts fragmented. Engineering stress-strain curves showed that green compacts of unreinforced 2124-Al, 10%SiC MMC and 5%Al2O3 MMNC deformed in a similar manner at ambient temperature and had the same compressive fracture stress of approximately 170 MPa. When the deformation temperature was increased from ambient to warm working temperatures (170–280°C) it was observed that electrical resistance heating (the heating mode of the Gleeble®) of unreinforced Al alloy, MMC and MMNC green compacts did not occur. This was attributed to the high electrical conductivity of aluminium, which resulted in poor heat generation due to the low electrical resistance in the samples. It was presumed that the small sample size (d=8 mm, h=12 mm) also caused rapid heat loss. After further experimentation, the green compacts were heated successfully by insulating the samples to retain heat. It was found that at 280°C, increasing the soaking time from 6 to 20 minutes decreased flow stress and improved plastic flow in the 2124-Al/10%SiC green compact.

The economic upheaval of COVID-19 forced companies to invest in emerging technologies to aid recovery. One such technology is extended reality, which is becoming a mature and innovative tool. Early adopters are seeing significant benefits in learning, training, immersive data visualization, and remote assistance. In South Africa, the mining industry is increasingly interested in using extended reality to optimize and innovate operations. The Minerals Council of South Africa's July 2021 report highlighted the potential of extended reality's to achieve zero-harm production and modernize the industry. However, the extent of extended reality adoption in mining remains unclear due to limited information on its usage. This study addressed this gap by distributing an online survey to assess awareness, knowledge, and current uses of extended reality in South Africa’s mining sector. The results indicated that virtual and augmented reality had the highest levels of awareness and usage, primarily for learning and training. Mixed reality, however, had the lowest awareness and knowledge levels. In terms of applications, visualization and remote assistance had the least use cases. These findings highlight that the South African mining industry is deficient in its understanding and use of extended reality technologies. Without better awareness and application, the South African industry risks missing out on the full benefits of extended reality. The study underlines the need for the South African mining industry to improve its outlook on extended reality technologies to fully leverage their potential applications and benefits.

Manganese ores are the major source of manganese for the production of manganese ferroalloys. There is a gap in the knowledge of the decrepitation behaviour of manganese ores, which presents a problem in the operation of smelters. Decrepitation, which is the breakage of the ore particles upon heating, is an important quality parameter for these ores. The purpose of this investigation was to determine the extent to which South African manganese ores decrepitate during preheating in a rotary kiln. The effects of temperature, rotational speed, and particle size decrepitation were investigated. Manganese ores were heated in a laboratory-scale rotary kiln at temperatures of 600, 800, and 1000°C, and rotational speeds of 3, 6, and 12 r/min. The size ranges were +6-20, +20-40, and +40-75 mm and the residence time was constant at 30 minutes. The decrepitation index (DI) is quantified as the ratio of the mass of <6 mm particles after pre-heating to the total mass of the sample. It was found that the DIs for all ores used were proportional to the temperature and the rotational speed and inversely proportional to the particle size range with temperature being the most important parameter. Ore A was the most susceptible to decrepitation followed by ore C and ore B; this was mainly to the decomposition of kutnohorite, the content of which was the highest in ore A and the lowest in ore B.

Several longwall faces in India have collapsed due to adverse geological conditions and/or inadequate capacity of powered supports. Thus it is imperative to access the capacity of a powered support and its interaction at longwall faces of varying geomining conditions in advance with lots of confidence. To achieve this, an index has been developed to ascertain the front leg pressure (FLP) of chock-shield support and roof-to-floor convergence (RFC) at longwall faces. The index called ?Longwall Face Stability Index? (LFSI) has been developed using statistics and Finite Element Modelling (FEM). The front leg pressure (FLP) and roof-to-floor convergence (RFC) predicted from the LFSI are validated with the field monitored data from two longwall panels. In this study, an attempt is also made to incorporate various geomining conditions into the finite element models typical of longwall mining practice. The index has taken into account the wide variations of geomining parameters like thickness, young?s modulus and friction angle of main roof (small, large), coal type (soft, hard), powered support capacity, and depth of coal seam. Thus, LFSI can be thought of as an index representing combined effect of roof type, geomining conditions and powered support capacity.

When evaluating mining investment opportunities, one should consider the risks associated with mineral exploration and development. These are commonly classified as technical, economic, and political risks, and are accounted for in the investment decision by changing the discount rate. Thus, a company may use different discount rates associated with varying risks in order to compensate for the variability of success. The discount rate has a tremendous effect on the economic evaluation of mineral projects. Even when all other factors used as inputs for calculating the NPV (net present value) are equal, the project under consideration may be accepted or rejected depending upon the discount rate. Determining a realistic discount rate for a given project is therefore the most difficult and important aspect of cash flow analysis. It should be determined with the consideration of proper technical, economic, and political conditions surrounding the specific project undergoing economic evaluation. One key problem for determining the appropriate discount rate is that it typically depends more on subjective perception of the degree of risk or other experience factors than on a systematic approach. Thus, this study aims to identify, analyse, and document the type, role, and impact of risk factors influencing the determination of discount rates, and then to determine discount rate by using the aforementioned factors.

The process of initiating opencast blasts through long cables is onerous. An obvious alternative is to replace these with radio controlled firing apparatus. Such devices appear from time to time and with the advance of telecommunications, more are likely to appear. However, there are two crucial and seemingly intractable obstacles to overcome: firstly, the problem of malfunction of the system, which can either fire prematurely or go into a state of suspense in which it is unknown whether firing might unexpectedly occur, and secondly, the problem of terrorism, as such a system could provide the capability for an off the shelf remote bomb. The issues of accessibility and electronic reliability when linked to explosives in a mining environment have to be demonstrated to be adequately covered before serious consideration should be given to these systems, up to now largely confined to military applications.
