Mechanical cleaning of bituminous coal in the United States was begun about 1875, with plants in western Pennsylvania and Illinois. The United States Geological Survey began to record the quantity of washed bituminous coal in 1906; and the series was carried forward to 1923, except that no data were collected, for 1922. This statistical work was transferred to the Bureau of Mines in 1925, and the collection of data on mechanical cleaning was resumed in 1927. Data collected before 1927 include only the coal that was washed at the mines and do not include that cleaned by pneumatic methods at the mines and that cleaned at central washeries operated by consumers.2/ The total bituminous coal washed in 1906 was less than 10 million net tons. In 1927, the first year for which complete figures are available for all types of mechanical cleaning, 28 million net tons of bituminous coal were cleaned in the United States.

Develop quieted, hand-held pneumatic percussion drills that can replace standard hand-held drills in many underground mining applications. The Problem Percussion drills are the noisiest machines used in underground mines; noise levels of 115 to 120 dBA are common, requiring the use of hearing protectors and limiting the time a miner is permit-ted to operate the drill during an 8-hour shift. Hand-held pneumatic percussion drills pose a particularly difficult problem because the operator cannot be isolated from the noise source (e.g., an acoustical cab), and alternative technologies for drilling roof bolt holes and blastholes in tight quarters are not readily available.

Recognizing the dynamic nature and possible range of toxic concentrations in the impending fume cloud prior to undertaking explosive blasting can reduce potential hazards and mitigate related incidents. The scaled cloud model was formulated to predict the relevant (major) toxic components in fume clouds released by nonideal mining explosives used for surface blasting. Natural turbulence unceasingly disperses the toxic molecules, widening (inflating) the fume cloud while diluting the concentrations, ultimately rendering nonhazardous conditions. The threshold cloud size depends upon the type and quantity of total explosives used and the cloud's thermodynamic condition. Though the scaled theory works for fume clouds with irregular (odd) shape, an equivalent upright cylindrical form is useful for rendering simple riskhazard scenarios. The cylinder's projection downward on the underlying terrain yields a circular 'shadow' marking the region threatened, thereby permitting a rough estimation of the potential hazards, were the cloud to settle down there. Wind causes the cloud to drift while it expands, so the shadow travels while it grows, until the risk hazard process is truncated at the nonhazardous threshold. The overall relative fume toxicity (RFT) is taken from the traditional Russian RFT rule, which utilizes only the two fume components that tend to dominate the resultant toxicity: carbon monoxide (CO) and total nitrogen oxides (NOx). Tabulated constants that characterize the fume spectrum in the cloud model were resolved for ammonium nitrate (94%) with fuel oil (6%), ANFO-94/6, using a refined thermodynamic work-principle. Comparable results were found with the reduction factor technique, when test results from the underground fume chamber were readjusted to reflect nominal field shooting conditions.

In the course of the work currently conducted by the Bureau of Mines in cooperation with the American Petroleum Institute Research Project 48 on identifying sulfur compounds in petroleum, a micromethod was developed (12)5 for catalytically removing the sulfur atom from sulfur compounds. The product is the residual portion of the molecule; the structure otherwise was unaltered except for hydrogenation of any unsaturated bonds that were present in the original compound. Positive identification of sulfur compounds isolated from crude oils is a difficult problem. Direct comparison of properties of the unknown with those of reference compounds is often impossible because of the limited number of reference sulfur compounds available. However, a relatively large number of pure hydrocarbons is available, and the conversion of the sulfur compound to a hydrocarbon enhances the possibility of identification. The technique also can be used to prepare microquantities of scarce hydrocarbons by hydrogenating compounds that are readily available.

Gold placer deposits along the upper Yukon River, in the region between the river villages of Circle and Eagle, were investigated by the Bureau of Mines. The investigation was conducted intermittently between 1976 and 1985 as part of an evaluation of mineral resources on lands proposed for inclusion in the National Park System. At least 230,000 troy ounces (tr oz) of gold has been produced in the region, principally from Woodchopper, Goal, and Fourth of July Greeks. The placers are underlain by, or occur downstream of, early Tertiary sediments that have been deposited in the Eagle Trough. Strike-slip displacement along the Tintina Fault is responsible for creation of the trough and may have been a factor in the formation of the present placers. Placers were found to have a close spatial correlation to certain altered fault lineaments of the Tintina Fault trench. Placer concentrates contain several different textural forms of gold, suggesting multiple origins. Geological studies and a survey of 162 panned concentrates throughout the region indicated previously unreported sites of placer gold, and potential exists for the discovery of additional placer and lode gold. Because of nearly continuous soil and vegetation cover, further evaluation of the region will require subsurface sampling.

We have tested the ability of ground penetrating radar (GPR) to resolve adjacent mine workings. The work was conducted at two National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health locations – an underground coal mine and an underground limestone mine. The objective of our work was to determine if GPR signals could be received from distant mine workings. The GPR system was calibrated on underground mine pillars of known dimensions using a variety of antennas. The system was then tested at several underground locations in an effort to detect an adjacent drift entry; and an adjacent abandoned coal mine. As a means of verification, an in-seam horizontal hole was drilled from the active coal mine to the abandoned mine to confirm the presence and location of the abandoned mine workings. Our results show that in the case of the limestone mine the maximum depth of penetration where the mine workings could be resolved was 85 ft; and in the case of the coal mine the abandoned mine workings could be resolved at a depth of 205 ft. We conclude that it may be possible to utilize GPR for initial underground mine studies followed by directional drilling to accurately delineate the extent and position of adjacent abandoned mine workings.

Water pollution has been an integral part of most mining operations in the past. Most mine planners had designed their mining operations with little or no regard for prevention of water pollution. The main planning element was always the economics of mineral recovery. Quite often the cheapest means of mineral recovery resulted in the largest water pollution problems. Recent water pollution laws have introduced a new economic element - water pollution control costs - to be considered in mine planning. Water pollution control costs can be extremely high. Foresighted planning can minimize these costs and provide better water pollution control. Effective pollution control preplanning can eliminate pollution from active mines and minimize pollution that may occur after completion of mining. Presently available technology can practically eliminate water pollution by treatment of the mine water. Use of water treatment during mining has no effect on the levels of water pollution after treatment ceases and the mine is abandoned. Therefore, this section of the report deals with preplanning to reduce water pollution, both present and future, by using at-source control techniques. Proper planning of mining and pollution control techniques should follow the concept of a complete, comprehensive reclamation plan. This plan should have control measures designed for all phases of mining from initiation through completion. Preplanning involves acquiring complete information concerning the future mine site, defining the reasons why mining could cause pollution from the site, and determination of available techniques to prevent or minimize formation or transportation of pollutants. Location of haulage and access roads and other mine related facilities should be included in preplanning for water pollution control. The Bureau of Mines conducted in-mine tests to determine correction factors applicable to low-velocity airflows (below 150 fpm) measured by the smoke cloud, vane anemometer, and oil of wintergreen tracer gas techniques 0 The average correction factors found for these methods of measurement were lower than those reported in the literature for use with higher velocity measurements. All tests measured airflows with controlled average velocities ranging from 50 to 100 fpm. Correction factors averaged about 0.75 for readings taken by the centerline smoke cloud method, remotely controlled and stickheld center" line anemometer, and split traverse stick-held anemometer. For hand-held centerline anemometer and oil of wintergreen tracer gas readings, correction factors averaged about 0.67. Since special anemometers are needed to measure airflows in this low-velocity range, and since proper calibration of these anemometers is difficult and expensive, the use of anemometers for low-velocity measurement is imprac-tical. On the other hand, smoke and oil of wintergreen give results as con-sistent as those obtained with specially calibrated, low-velocity anemometers. Furthermore, they are easy to use and inexpensive.

Operating variables affecting the efficiency of the basic oxygen furnace (BOF) and the level of contaminating elements in the steel product were investigated by the Bureau of Mines. Steel was made in a 400-lb-capacity BOF designed to rotate on its vertical axis to increase the area of hot metal surface subject to oxygen attack. Hot metal for the BOF was made by melting pig iron and scrap in an 18-inch (ID) cupola. The variables were BOF speed of rotation, rate of oxygen flow, number of jets and angle at which they were machined into the oxygen-lance tip, temperature of hot metal, reactivity of lime, and temperature of scrap for the BOF charge. Experiments were arranged according to a two-level fractional-factorial design. The effects of the seven variables were evaluated for 13 responses. The greatest ingot yield occurred while using the larger angle lance tip and jets. The most carbon burned per unit volume of oxygen resulted from rotating the BOF and using the smaller angle lance tip. The largest sulfur transfer to the slag occurred at the higher hot metal temperature levels and higher rate of oxygen flow.

An instrumentation and numeric modeling study was conducted by the Bureau of Mines at the Magmont Mine in Bixby, MO. An isolated section of this room-and-pillar mine was monitored with borehole and closure extensometers during a pillar recovery program to determine stress redistribution. In situ stress measurements were taken in the rib before pillar extraction began. Sample cores from the boreholes were taken for analysis of the properties of the host rock in the laboratory. The extensometers recorded no measurable displacements during most of the operation. Two-dimensional, finite-element; three-dimensional, finite-element; and three-dimensional displace-ment discontinuity codes were used to model the area of study. The finite-element models were run with two initial stress conditions, i.e., stress due to gravity only and stress obtained by in situ measurements. Horizontal stresses in the models reduced the calculated factor-of-safety in the mine back by up to a factor of 10, but did not have a significant effect on calculated pillar stability.

The 1963 performance of the United States economy was impressive. The year was one of continued growth unmarred by a recession. By the end of 1963 the economy's expansion had already lasted almost as long as the 1954-57 upswing, and the net gain in output since the trough in activity in early 1961 compared favorably with most earlier postwar cyclical advances. There was no indication of any slow- down at yearend. Both gross national product (GNP) and national income in 1963 were 5 percent higher than in the previous year. GNP totaled $584 billion, a gain of $28 billion over 1962. Real output of goods and services rose 3.4 percent over the year. Price increases continued to be moderate. Production, employment, personal income, and corporate profits all registered new but unemployment continued high at 5.5 percent and the prospects for improvement remained poor. The economy again failed to use its full potential. Current value of mineral production kept pace with the economy. The constant dollar value of mineral production gained more than real GNP because of the relatively stable price of minerals. Mining production achieved a new high in 1963. Steel production totaled 110 million tons, 12 million tons above 1962, making 1963 the first 100- million-ton year since 1957 and lifting the steel-associated minerals group upward. The gain in ferrous metals mining was insufficient to compensate for the decline of nonferrous metals mining resulting in an insignificant decline in the metal mining total as a whole. Social and political movements that had been gathering momentum over several years continued in 1993 to dramatically affect and inspire uncertainty on the global mineral industry. Privatization of government-controlled mineral industries continued throughout the world, especially in Africa, Asia, Central Eurasia, Eastern Europe, Latin America, and Western Europe. The reasons for privatization varied among regions and countries, but the trend was universal and was not expected to end soon. Regional trade blocks were being developed and expanded. The European Union (EU), the North American Free Trade Area (NAFTA), the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) , the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) , and the Latin American Southern Cone Common Market (MERCOSUR) were expected to contribute to reduced internal tariffs and increased minerals trade. Minerals consumption within the politically unstable former Soviet Union (FSU) decreased significantly without a simultaneous cutback in production, while its exports flooded the world's mineral markets. These exports into Western Europe and Japan, still in economic recession, depressed minerals and metals prices worldwide, especially for aluminum, magnesium, nickel, and potash. Increasingly restrictive environmental laws and land-access limitations in Australia, Canada, Western Europe, and the United States tended to discourage mineral resource development. However, the number of undeveloped countries in Latin America and Asia that encouraged exploration and development by revising mining and tax laws and regulations increased, thereby increasing investment opportunities for foreigners.

The study of oil production methods with reference to the amount of oil originally pressent in the oil-bearing, formations has developed the fact that-ordinary methods-of production remove only a part of the oil actually present. In fact, it is generally realized that when a field is abandoned more oil remains in the sand than has ever been removed. As a consequence of this realization, the petroleum engineer has devoted considerable tine in recent years in devising methods for increasing the percentage of recovery. His studies have indicated that in most cases the total production of a field is dependent upon the available gas rather than upon the available oil. Mien the gas in the sand is exhausted, oil production ceases even though there may be enormous quantities of oil remaining unrecovered. Consequently, any method of conserving the gas or increasing the supply of gas will increase the ultimate recovery from a field. The practice of producing oil under vacuum increases the effectiveness of the gas remaining in the sand, as well as furnishing more gas by evaporating the light fractions of the crude. Pumping ' compressed gas or air down selected wells of a lease has been found to increase the production of oil from the surrounding wells. Studies of oil and gas ratios have indicated that much of the available gas has been wasted as far as its effectiveness on oil production is concerned. his has led to the development of "stop cocking"3 and the practice of producing under back pressure3, which methods aim, to obtain more effective work from the gas with reference to the amount of oil delivered to the well.

IN 1944 the Congress passed the Synthetic Liquid Fuels Act that authorized the Secretary of the Interior, acting through the Federal Bureau of Mines, to conduct basic research and construct and operate demonstration plants to produce synthetic liquid fuels from coal, oil shale, and other substances. As a basis for the oil shale investigations to be undertaken in this country, the progress of foreign countries in developing and using oil shale as a source of liquid fuels was studied by the technical missions of the Federal Bureau of Mines. Oil shale mines, retorting plants, and refineries were visited; geological information on the nature and occurrence of the foreign oil shales was obtained; and samples of the oil shales were collected where possible. Samples collected by these missions or acquired by other means came from Australia, Brazil, Canada, France, Manchuria (China) , New Zealand, Scot-land, Spain, Sweden, Thailand, and Union of South Africa. These countries represent a large part of the locations where oil shale developments have taken place. The major omissions are the Estonian, German, and Russian developments.

Tables 16 through 19 continue the series of providing the world merchant fleet distribution by type of vessel and the ranking of the major fleets by country of registry. Table 20 this year provides a summary of the world's liquid gas carrier fleet. These vessels are included in the totals given for the world's tanker fleet, but gives a breakdown demonstrating the growth of the importance of natural gas in the world's energy commodity consumption. Panama and Suez Canals Tables 21 and 22 provide the latest available information on the transit of mineral commodities through the Panama Canal, by number of vessels, direction, and the commodities transported. Although the number of vessels transiting the Panama Canal dropped slightly (0.5%) between 1989 and 1990, the total amount of cargo moved rose by 3.6% and the amount of mineral commodities moved rose by 7.2%.

The Bureau of Mines is engaged in a continuing research effort toward the recovery of alumina from kaolinitic clay and other nonbauxitic domestic minerals. Hydrochloric acid extraction of calcined clay is among the acid processes under consideration. Although aluminum is easily leached from calcined clay, the presence of fines and slimes in the leached residue has hindered the application of this and other acid leaching processes. A clay feed preparation method was therefore developed that eliminated the slimy nature and the separation problems normally associated with leached clay residues. The preparation process consists of crushing the raw clay to minus 20 mesh, dampening the crushed clay with a fine water mist while tumbling on a rotating disk, and calcining the misted clay at 750° C. The misting process increases residue settling rates threefold to 9 cm/min (18 ft/hr) and filtration rates by two orders of magnitude. Leaching-kinetics were determined for misted clay feeds in a batch, stirred-tank reactor. Rapid leaching occurred during the first 85 to 90 pct of the extraction. The linear relationship of extraction to time during this initial phase corresponded to a zero order reaction with a rate constant of around 10 pct/min.

This chapter summarizes data on crude mineral production for the United States, its island possessions, and the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico. Included also are tables that show the principal mineral commodities exported from and imported into the United States and that compare world and U.S. mineral production. The detailed data from which these tables were derived are contained in the individual commodity chapters of volume I and in the State chapters of volume n of this edition of the Minerals Yearbook. Although crude mineral production may be measured at any of several stages of extraction and processing, the stage of measurement used in this chapter is what is normally termed "mine output!' It usually refers to minerals or ores in the form in which they are first extracted from the ground, but customarily includes the production of auxiliary processing at or near the mines.

The Beckley mine is one of five new mines in a heretofore unmined portion of the Beckley coalbed. The remoteness of these new mines from prior mining and their greater overburden preclude applying methane emission experience obtained in the old mines. Four sections of the Beckley mine were monitored. The data gathered show that variations in methane emission cannot be explained by variations in coal production. Although overburdens varied by as much as 30 pct, no correlation with methane emissions could be determined. The rib emissions increase with increased length of rib from a section advancing into virgin coal and do not decline over a prolonged idle period (32 days) whereas some decline has been measured for a section not mining into virgin coal. The indication is that degasification prior to mining will reduce the hazard of methane emissions in this area of the Beckley coalbed.

Aid mine workers in detecting hazardous roof conditions in underground mines by developing a method of roof sounding which supplements or replaces the traditional roof sounding technique where the miner relies on experience to determine whether or not the rock is sound. Approach The Bureau of Mines developed an electronic roof sounding de-vice that acoustically determines the integrity of mine roof rock by "listening" to the variation in frequency vibrations within the rock. How It Works n previous research, the Bureau of Mines found that loose rock in a mine, when impacted, vibrates at a much lower frequency and for a lower time period than does a solid slab. By quantifying the enhancement of low frequency vibrations in loose rock over solid rock, a repeatable, objective measure of the rock's soundness can be obtained. This approach was used in developing the rock stability tester.
