The Bureau of Mines conducted laboratory batch and continuous flotation processing tests on waste granite fines from South Carolina to determine the possibility of recovering high-quality feldspar and glass sand. Three flotation systems were used for removal of the iron-bearing biotite: Two employed an alkaline anionic-cationic circuit and the third employed an acid cationic circuit. Commercial-grade products were obtained when the remaining biotite was magnetically removed from the feldspar and quartz concentrates. Continuous flotation processing yielded a feldspar concentrate containing, in percent, 3.60 Na20, 5.60 K20, and 2.25 Ca0, with recoveries of 75.3, 66.6, and 72.6 percent, respectively. The feldspar tailing was high quality glass sand containing 98.0 percent Si02 and 0.025 percent Fe203; about 60 percent of the quartz was recovered.

Equilibrium partial pressures of gaseous HCl and H2O over aqueous binary and ternary solutions of HCl and AICls were calculated or estimated in the range of 20° to 110° C, and up to saturation with AlC13?6H2O. The results were extended to solutions containing less than 10 wt-pct FeCl3 by assuming that FeCl3 and AIC13 are equivalent on the molar basis, since both salts have trivalent cations with a cammon anion. The ionic activity coefficient of HCl and the equilibrium constant for dissolution of gaseous HCl were also computed. This research is part of the effort by the Bureau of Mines, U.S. Department of the Interior, to provide thermodynamic data to expand the technology base relevant to the extraction of alumina from nonbauxitic domestic raw materials.

Important contributions can be made to conservation of natural resources by recovering mineral values from primary and secondary metallurgical slimes and flue dusts. This applies particularly to ultrafine mineral particles that escape recovery by conventional mineral dressing. In the interest of economy and conservation the Bureau of Mines is investigating fundamental properties of ultrafine mineral values in slimes as a means of developing new or improved methods of mineral recovery. The work described in this progress report was carried on in the Bureau's laboratories at Rolla, Mo., from 1951 to 1953. The mineral material used as a subject for study was tin-ore slimes. DESCRIPTION OF TIN SLIMES The tin slimes consist principally of quartz, with appreciable quantities of tourmaline and sericite mica and small amounts of cassiterite, pyrite, hematite, and arsenopyrite. The tin content is approximately 0.5 percent.

Many different types of mobile equipment used in surface coal mining utilize enclosed cabs to protect equipment operators. The overburden removal process is extremely dusty and can cause excessive exposure to respirable dust, especially crystalline silica. After equipment is used for years, many components of the enclosure deteriorate and its effectiveness is greatly reduced. This report discusses a cooperative research study performed on an Ingersoll Rand DM45E surface drill, retrofitted with a new Sigma pressurization and filtration system. Respirable dust concentrations were substantially reduced from 0.64 mg/m3 during pre-testing to 0.05 mg/m3 during post-testing with the new system, representing a 92% reduction in dust levels in the drill cab. This new system appears to be a very well-built and sturdy device, well-suited for the mining industry.

This paper presents a general overview of the Bureau of Mines' programs in the areas of operational and post-disaster communications. These programs encompass both hardware developments and system evaluations. Topics discussed include a new visual paging system compatible with existing pager phone lines, a means of modifying commercially avail able pager phones to permit selective paging and message leaving, a multiplexed telephone system that uses twisted shielded pair and requires no central control, medium frequency hardware developments, and a manual for mine communications. Research has continued in the area of post-disaster location and communications. This research is based on seismic and electro- magnetic techniques. Each has been extensively studied and field tested to better understand its ability to perform effectively. A brief description is given of the post-disaster program. Results are promising and provide insight into future areas of research.

The recent occurrence of fatal accidents in copper mines, presumably due to premature ignition of loaded holes by the heat from reacting ammonium nitrate-fuel oil (AN-FO) and pyrite-bearing ores, has led to an examination of this reaction. The reactivity of prilled AN-FO mixtures with pyrite-bearing ores and the effects of water, dilute sulfuric acid, and potential inhibitors on reactivity of the mixtures were evaluated. Initiation of an exothermic reaction was observed as low as 150° F with acid in the absence of inhibitors. Low concentrations of urea, calcium carbonate, zinc oxide, and magnesium oxide were effective in inhibiting the reactivity of the mixtures. The temperatures produced during the reaction of mixtures of AN-FO and pyrite-bearing ores, in the absence of inhibitors, always exceeded the temperature at which electric blasting caps are thermally initiated.

Provide a strategy for calculating optimum distribution of selected sensors for detecting underground mine fires. Approach The Bureau of Mines performed research to determine adequate distribution of product-of-combustion (POC) fire sensors within mine entries. This placement strategy would improve the miner's chances for escape by locating sensors where they would most effectively, quickly, and efficiently detect fires resulting from coal or wood combustion. Spacing of Sensors Placement strategy guidelines were based on the performance of 160 F heat sensors with ideal operating characteristics which were placed at intervals of ten feet in underground mine entries. Data obtained from full-scale mine fires were used to estimate fire sizes and alarm activation times for the heat sensors. Various equations were then developed to determine spacing requirements for any fire detection system installed in entries of varying heights, widths, and ventilation rates.

Provide a low-maintenance, reliable means of generating bubbles and controlling bubble size for column flotation. Approach Commercial sparger systems used in flotation columns to process minerals provide only limited means of controlling the size of bubbles generated and the rate of air injection. Generally, these limitations are a detriment to flotation performance, particularly in recovering coarse or fine mineral particles. In addition, conventional bubble generation systems require frequent maintenance, often requiring shut-down of the column itself for repairs. To permit greater control of the bubble size generated in the flotation column and to eliminate the counter-productive problems associated with the operation of current air sparger systems, the Bureau of Mines investigated alternative methods for generating bubbles. Based on the investigation, an external bubble generation system was designed, developed, and laboratory and commercially tested.

This report presents statistical data on individual plants in the fuel- briquet and packaged-fuel industries circularized by the Bureau of Mines, United States Department of the Interior, in its 1957 annual survey. This survey revealed that 17 briquet and 23 packaged-fuel plants were active part or throughout the year. The annual production capacity of the fuel-briquet industry was 3,088,000 net tons, a decrease of 17 percent from 1956. The decline in capacity was caused in part by the permanent retirement of 4 plants and also by the reduction in capacities of 4 other plants. The rate of production of briquet plants also decreased as the industry operated at 35.8 percent of capacity compared with 40.9 percent in 1956. Every operating plant in 1957 had an annual capacity exceeding 25,000 tons.

The sections of this chapter and the area chapters in volume III contain further details on production. A summary table comparing world and U.S. mineral production also is included. Mineral production may be measured at any of several stages of extraction and processing. The stage of measurement used in the chapter is normally what is termed "mine output." It usually refers to minerals in the form in which they are first extracted from the ground, but customarily includes for some minerals the product of auxiliary processing operations at or near mines.

The Federal Bureau of Mines investigated, on a laboratory scale, a technique for recovery of silver from pregnant solutions generated in the hydro-metallurgical treatment of complex base-metal sulfide concentrates with oxidizing chloride media. This technique provides a means for recovery and simplified reduction of accessory silver to metal from chloride solutions. The method consists of adding NaI or KI to the solution to precipitate AgI, which is then contacted with Na2S to produce Ag2S and to regenerate the iodide salt solution. Silver recoveries range from 99 pct with 20 pct excess iodide precipitant, to 92 pct when the theoretical stoichiometric amount of precipitant is employed. The Ag2S product can be reduced to silver metal by contact with aluminum chips in NaOH solution followed by purification with conventional fire refining techniques.

Eliminate the occurrence of false fire detection alarms caused by the operation of diesel-powered vehicles in underground coal mines. Approach Fire detection systems used in underground mines are based on measurements of airborne combustion products such as carbon monoxide or smoke particles. The effectiveness and credibility of these systems can be reduced by the occurrence of false alarms that result from the operation of diesel-powered equipment, which produces the same combustion products. False alarms end up being very costly to the mine operation in terms of downtime and labor needed for verification. To improve upon current fire detection systems used in the presence of internal combustion engine products, the U.S. Bureau of Mines developed a fire detector that can discriminate between the occurrence of real mine fires and the presence of engine smoke.

Develop a full-length-anchored roof bolt that is economical, nontoxic, nonflammable, and non-allergenic. Approach Grout roof bolts with a storable mixture of ultra-fast setting inorganic cement and water. How It Works A loose mixture of dry cement powder, and pinhead-size water droplets encased in waxy globules, are pack-aged in sausage shaped cartridges for storage and use. After the cartridge is inserted Into a drilled hole, the roof bolt is thrust In and rotated to mix the cement and water. The cement hardens in seconds, providing usuable anchoring strengths in minutes. Prior to filling of the sausage shaped cartridges, the microcapsules of water are Intimately mixed with the dry cement. The currently used grouting consists of a mixture of one part water (minimum) with three parts alpha-type gypsum cement and a minor amount of accelerator.

Surface mine blasting was recently investigated as a potential source of high concentrations of stray gases found in nearby residences of western Pennsylvania. In one incident carbon monoxide was detected in a home and in the other, high concentrations of carbon dioxide were found in a home. Both carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide are by-products of blasting. However, other potential sources of these gases may also exist in a residential setting. In each case, gas chromatography (GC) and carbon isotopic analyses were used to define atmospheric concentrations inside the homes, and to determine the source of a stray gas. Molecular and isotopic analyses provide geochemical evidence as to the origin and source of the stray gas. This paper discusses elements of a stray gas investigation and the analyses necessary to identify the source of a stray gas.

To permit better cap lamp positioning for users of dust helmets. Approach The present design of the dust helmet prevents use of the miner's cap lamp when the front shield is raised, When the shield is raised I the cap lamp is directed at the mine roof or back, making the lamp useless in the event the miner needs to wear his self-rescuer. A flip bracket was designed by the Bureau of Mines to correct this situation. How It Works The safety hat is modified by the addition of lamp clips, a bracket and a hinge on the cap lamp and face shield. Two clips hold the lamp cord firmly to the helmet. A review of all upper extremity cumulative trauma disorder (UECTD) injuries was conducted by the U.S. Bureau of Mines for 1985 through 1989. This review was performed by analyzing each injury, as reported by law and maintained on the U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration's accident data base. This analysis found that incidence rates in mining were lower than in private sector industry, although the number of reported UECTD injuries increased sevenfold and their percentage of all mining injuries increased fivefold from 1985 through 1989. Metal-nonmetal mines accounted for 80 pct of UECTD injuries, while coal mines accounted for 20 pct. Nearly 63 pct of UECTD injuries were accounted for by only four occupations-mechanics, laborers, boney (crusher) operators, and miners not elsewhere classified (NEC)-with an incidence rate well above the private sector industry rate.

The settlers of a new country necessarily suffer at first from the lack of accumulated stocks of metals - in-use that are possessed in older countries . Our American colonists were at first compelled to import their metals in manufactured forms , and it must have proved difficult to produce an exportable surplus of commodities with which to pay for them . These circumstances stimulated a search for domestic ore deposits . Various discoveries resulted , so that as early as 1628 , we find the colonists importing two craftsmen from England to establish iron -works in Massachusetts to beneficiate local ores . In 1648 , an iron -works at Lynn was producing metal at an annual rate of 400 tons . Later on , the colonial iron industries became of importance , some metal being actually exported to England . The people of this country thus early became convinced of the necessity for domestic mineral production . It is now little realized how persistent were their efforts to - make mineral discoveries , before the gold- rush to California ; the extraordinary success of our subsequent mineral explorations has overshadowed the earlier record . Precise and complete accounting of our mineral production , having the character of national bookkeeping , is available only for the series of years beginning with 1880 , when commences the official record that is provided by the Government publication called Mineral Resources of the United States . In the period of 52 years , from 1880 through 1932 , the value of mineral production of the United States amounted to more than 122 billion dollars . Only 12 billions of this total were produced in the 21 years , 1880-1900 , while nearly 110 billions were produced in the first 31 years of the present century . Of this 110 billions , over 53 billions were produced in the most recent decade , 1921- 1930 , the production of the previous decade , 1911-1920 , having been only 37 billions , though it included the war period ; that of the decade 1901-1910 was 16 billions . In 1931 , the total value of mineral products of the United States was $ 3,180,000,000 , compared with an average annual value of $ 5,556,000,000 during the previous five - year period , 1926-1930 . The decline in 1931 from that average was therefore 43 per cent . As to the three great groups of mineral commodities , metals fared worst , with a decline of 55 per cent in the value of their production , while the value of fuels declined 39 per cent , as did that of the nonmetals group .

Instrumented cable bolts developed at the Spokane Research Laboratory of the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health were used in conjunction with existing ground control to monitor rock mass loads at various field sites (T.G. Soda Ash, Getchell, Meikle, SSX, K-2, and Stillwater). Axial and shear loads were determined by strain gages to levels of instrument accuracy of ±5 N or ±5 microstrain as these loads were transferred to the instrumented cable bolts. These gages were 12.5 mm long and embedded into a remanufactured king wire that replaced the conventional king wire. Cable bolt performance, quality of grout, and installation techniques were also assessed. By using instrumented cables, a mine operator can determine axial load along the cable at predefined gage locations. By monitoring load on and displacement of the rock mass, more effective ground support can be selected and installed, which will lead to safer working conditions for miners.

During the nine years that have elapsed since the Bureau of Mines was established in 1910, the work of the bureau has included many investigations that have proved of high value to the Nation. Eleven mining experiment stations established by act of Congress have greatly increased the bureau's usefulness; being situated in the mining fields, these stations are closely in touch with industrial needs, and the results of their research and educational work are more directly available to those engaged in the mining, metallurgical, and mineral industries. In the United States mining is second in importance to agriculture only. The Federal Government annually appropriates large sums in the interest of agriculture, whereas the appropriations for mining are relatively small. But the nation-wide popularity of Government assistance to agriculture should not overshadow the need of Federal assistance to the mineral industry. With scientific management farms can be made to produce indefinitely without any depletion of the potential resources of the soil, but the mineral wealth of a country is a fixed quantity, and every year's production brings nearer its ulti- mate exhaustion. As the deposits of the richer or more readily available ores, espe- cially those in the West, have been depleted, development of methods for mining and treating the leaner or more inaccessible ores has lagged, so that meeting the increasing demands for certain metals is becoming more and more difficult. In some branches of mining the small inde- pendent operator is greatly handicapped. He has to rely on custom mills and smelters for the profit or loss of his product, and because of relatively inefficient methods of milling or smelting he may receive no return for much of the ore he mines. Even though the small operator thinks he knows of improved methods of obtaining the metals from the ores, he can not afford to install the necessary machinery or to carry on experiments that may or may not prove successful. In view of the increasing need of metals and the impossibility of renewing the ore supplies, efforts should be directed toward developing the most economical and efficient methods in mining and metal- lurgy. The great mining companies carry on independent research work, some of them on a large scale; but as such work is usually undertaken for gainful purposes, these companies do not feel under any obligation to give the results of their investigations to the world. Clearly the solution of the difficulty is to place in the mining districts trained mining and metallurgical engineers who will investigate and solve the problems for the benefit of the whole industry. It is with this purpose in view that experiment stations of the Bureau of Mines have been established to investigate economy, efficiency, and safety in mining, and to make public the results of the investigations. The Federal Government can be of most help in developing the mineral resources of the country when its forces are brought in direct contact with these resources. Mining is as old as civilization, but only within a generation has this country busied itself with any other problem of mining than the amount of mineral products that could be put upon the market. Little concern was felt if much of the metal in an ore was wasted, if the miner lived in unsanitary surround- ings and died of preventable disease, or if accidents occurred fre- quently and from causes that could easily be controlled. Now we realize that the waste of any resource is inexcusable. The mineral wealth of the country can be mined but once. The task before the Nation is to recover as much metal as possible from the ore in the ground, and to do this in the most economical way without waste of human life. This task is of such magnitude as to warrant aid from the Government through experiment stations. In its efforts to make the work of these stations of most benefit to the mineral industry the Bureau of Mines seeks the cooperation of State authorities, of mine operators, of miners' organizations, and of every person interested. These experiment stations also serve an educational purpose. Gen- erally speaking, mining is not a preferred occupation. The miner should have reason to take greater interest in his work; he should feel that the experiments the Government is making affect him vitally by enabling him to increase his production and by making his work safer. The mine operator should realize that the Government stands ready to aid him, and he should know that he can bring his own problems to a Government organization that is trained and equipped to solve them. The surest method of accomplishing these results is to carry the work of the Bureau of Mines into the mining regions through the establishment of experiment stations easily accessible both to the mine operator and to the miner. Many miners in this country do not read English, but they can understand motion pictures of mining methods; they can learn how lives can be saved in case of accident; and they can appreciate the larger results gained by modern methods and equipment. "An investigation has been made of the applicability to a variety of coals, other than those from Illinois, of the Powell and Parr method of analysis for the forms of sulphur in coal.A complete study was made of the sulphur in the following coals:- Upper Freeport, Pa.; Pittsburgh seam, Pa.; Pocahontas No. 3, W, Va..; Letcher Co., Ky.; Morgan Co., Tenn.; and Cherokee Co., Kan.The method of analysis gave excellent results when applied to these coals. In the determination of pyrite, the iron-sulphur ratio checked in every case with the theoretical. After the extraction of the pyrite and sulphates, the remaining sulphur was proved to be organic in nature.This work indicated that sulphur exists in coal in three typical forms: - pyrite or marcasite, sulphates, and organic sulphur. A study of the changes which these forms undergo during coking has been made on a variety of coals, and the following five classes of reactions established.First. Complete decomposition of the pyrite and marcasite to ferrous sulphide, pyrrhotite, and hydrogen sulphide. This reaction begins at 300°C., is complete at 600 °C., and generally reaches its maximum between 400 and 500°C."
